Ransom (2017) s02e11 Episode Script

The Client

1 GIRL: Oh, my God.
I can't even with Heather anymore.
GIRL 2: I know, right? She's so thirsty.
I mean, look at this picture she just posted.
#NoFilter, my ass.
- Where the hell are all your pores? - Yeah, I bet she walks around - in chromogenic lighting all day, too.
- (BOTH LAUGH) - Can I use your phone to check my notifs? - (SCOFFS) You need to get your own phone.
- I have my own phone.
See? - (SPEAKS FRENCH) - Yeah, tell that to my - (PHONE RINGS) parents.
Hello? WOMAN: Hey, sweetie.
Can you stop by the pharmacy and pick up some Bingeman daytime cough medicine? We're out.
What? No.
Ang and I are hanging out.
You said we could.
This was planned.
I know, sweetie, but Nolan woke up sick.
I have work to do and (CHUCKLES) Nolan won't let Dad leave him alone.
Hey, don't tell her that.
Yeah.
Okay, sure.
I'll see you tomorrow, I guess.
Yeah.
(SHOUTING IN FRENCH) Home.
Mom? Dad? Mom! Dad! Nolan? (LINE RINGING) Come on.
Come on, Aunt Sylvia, come on.
(PHONE RINGING) SYLVIA (RECORDED): You've reached Sylvia.
Please leave a message.
(LINE BEEPS) WOMAN: Crisis Resolution.
I need your help.
I just want to make sure I understand.
Your parents said not to call the police? No.
They said never call them.
Doesn't sound like strong parental advice.
Yeah? You got kids? My parents aren't big on-on the Man.
You know? My-my dad said that he's always watching us and that extends to the cops, too.
Said something bad could happen if we called them.
OLIVER: Being scared that “something ba”" will happen if you call the police, you don't find that strange? Look, my-my parents are just overprotective.
And they said that if anything bad ever happened, just forget about the cops and grab this bag, call Aunt Sylvia and do whatever she told us to do.
But Aunt Sylvia never answered? Do you know your Aunt Sylvia well? I met her once when I was, like, five, maybe.
ZARA: I can't find any signs of forced entry, but there was definitely a struggle here.
The parents and brother didn't go willingly.
Hmm.
A ton of Web blockers on this.
ZARA: Really? Yeah, they obviously didn't want their kids looking at the wrong stuff.
Hmm.
I'm sure the teenage daughter loves that.
Mm-hmm.
And this $30,000 is all that was in the bag? Are you sure about that? You sure about that scarf? (COUGHING NEARBY) TAYLOR: Nolan? (COUGHING CONTINUES) Nolan? Thank God.
What happened? Come on, buddy.
Say something.
Nolan, why won't you say anything? You guys feel like a drink? Coffee, perhaps? - Aah! - Stop! We told you where to find it.
Boss.
It's where they said it was.
In a boathouse, half hour east.
WOMAN: Is it all there? What's this? 50 grand.
Where's the rest? It's been ten years.
It's gone.
- (GRUNTS) - No! No! (COUGHS) You can torture us all you want.
We can't give you what we don't have.
I'm not gonna torture you, honey.
You'll never find our kids.
Oh.
Aunt Sylvia's not in any position to look after them now.
ERIC: Nolan, the people who were here, did you see them? I don't know what's wrong with him.
Usually he won't shut up.
Come on, buddy.
- You have to say something.
- OLIVER: He can't.
He's in shock.
Going through what's called reactive mutism.
It's what happens when someone witnesses or experiences something Witnesses or experiences something what? Bad? Traumatic? There's blood on the blankets.
My brother was hiding and my-my parents are missing.
I don't think there's a point in censoring yourselves anymore.
ZARA: We've tried your Aunt Sylvia several times.
There's still no answer.
Eric, we should just call the police.
TAYLOR: No.
- No cops.
- CYNTHIA: Sweetie, our job isn't to find people; it's to get them back.
- Then get them back.
- ERIC: Nolan, why don't you go show Zara and Cynthia your room? Sure they'd be interested to take a quick look around.
And Taylor, um, let's go make you guys a snack.
I'm sure you're starving.
I bet you're a PB & J type of guy, huh? Come on.
Lead the way.
OLIVER: What are, what are your folks like? I don't know.
Fine, I guess.
I mean, I love them, but they're boring.
You know, they never let us do anything.
Always have to be home after school.
No extracurricular activities, no social media.
They're just Oppressive? Well, they're not North Korea, but yeah, I guess.
Is there something you're not telling us, Taylor? You seem a little tense.
Dude, my parents are missing.
I'm sorry if I'm not chill, but I hired you, remember? Why would I hide anything from you? I don't know, dude, but I'm a profiler.
It's my job the one that you hired me to do, as you so kindly pointed out and your micro-expressions tell me that you're holding something back.
(SCOFFS) We really need to implement a minimum age requirement for clients.
This was also in the bag.
It's from my last birthday.
Where was this taken? Uh, our favorite ice cream shop.
Turn it over.
ERIC: “Get Nolan his favorite ice cream, “tell Aunt Sylvia, remember your locket and watch your back.
” This is so confusing.
What does it mean? - Is it a riddle? - Could be.
My parents are nerds.
They love games, puzzles, brain teasers.
They say that they prepare you for real-life problems.
CYNTHIA: What are you doing here, skiing? Wow.
Okay.
Is that your sister? Instructing the kids never to talk to the police, leaving them with a bag filled with money suggests that they The parents were expecting this to happen one day.
And made a plan for when it did.
(PHONE RINGS) - I got it, I got it.
- No, no, no.
Taylor, wait, wait, wait a second.
Put it on speaker, watch me for cues and say as little as possible.
Okay? Hello? WOMAN: Taylor, dear, it's Sylvia.
Oh, Aunt Sylvia, thank God.
I couldn't Are you and your brother okay? Yeah, we're fine.
Scared, but Are you and your brother at home? Um, yeah.
But where are Mom and Dad? What-what do we do? Oh, nothing, sweetie.
You just sit tight and I'll send a car to pick you up.
Anybody else there? Uh, no.
No, it's just us.
Oh, good.
Now, don't worry.
Everything's fine.
See you soon, dear.
ERIC: That wasn't - Aunt Sylvia.
- I used software on my laptop to trace the call; you said your Aunt Sylvia's from New York, but that call came from a Boston area cell phone.
And the measured way which she spoke didn't indicate sincerity at all.
She was sussing out the situation.
So, whoever it was, they're on their way over here, looking for you two.
ERIC: Yeah.
Yeah, that's what it seems like.
Whoever abducted your parents wants something from them.
Perhaps your mom and dad aren't willing to give it to them, and they think that threatening you is going to change their minds.
What do they want from my parents? The 30 grand? Advice on beige pants? Well, we we don't know that yet.
Whatever it is, I'm guessing it's related to the message on the back of this photo, which means it's something other than the money in the garage.
You guys are gonna crack the code in order to help us find it.
We'll start with the ice cream shop.
And make sure to pack a few things.
There's no telling how long we'll be.
(GRUNTS) CYNTHIA: Taylor.
Uh, coming! CYNTHIA: You ready? Uh, yep.
- Hey, you okay? - Mm-hmm.
(DOOR CHIMES) Okay, Nolan, what'll it be? Oh, his favorite is strawberry mint with sprinkles, and waffle cone, right? Sounds good, I guess.
Taylor, what are you gonna have? Oh, man, I can't eat right now.
(CLERK SPEAKS FRENCH) Hi, I'd like a strawberry mint ice cream with sprinkles in a waffle cone, s'il vous plaît.
OLIVER: Your parents wanted to make sure, no matter what happened, you'd be safe.
I guess they were wrong.
Hey.
You're still safe.
What is it? “Get Nolan his favorite ice cream, “tell Aunt Sylvia, remember your locket and watch your back.
” “Lock et clé” means “lock and key,” but look.
Leave out the “clé,” and it says “locket.
” TAYLOR: The manager said unit 1051.
OLIVER: It's right over here.
Fifty one.
Any ideas? No, the answer's got to be in this photo.
“Remember your locket and watch your back.
” (CYNTHIA CLEARS THROAT) “Watch your” You see how prominently your watch is displayed in this photo? It's almost like it was staged.
CYNTHIA: Huh.
It wasn't.
CYNTHIA: Well, as far as you knew.
It's my birthday.
- 11-23-4.
- It's our way in.
A hockey bag.
Have you guys seen this before? No.
(EXHALES) ZARA: Okay, this doesn't make any sense.
- What's that? - I've run background on the Thomases, and I still can't find any record of them going back further than 11 or 12 years.
No passports, employment histories, driver's licenses.
Nothing from Hartford, huh? No, it's like They never existed.
ERIC: Heads up.
Here we go.
Blue van.
Doesn't look like someone who's calling the shots.
No.
Most likely working for whoever is.
(CAR DOOR OPENS) ZARA: Careful.
(PHONE RINGING) Oliver, what'd you find? Eh, just two and a half mill stashed in a storage locker.
- Interesting.
- You? A date with someone who's looking for it.
Probably isn't gonna be very happy to see me.
(PHONE RINGING) Hello? - MAN: Who is this? - Who's this? I'm guessing it isn't “Aunt Sylvia”.
Sylvia's taken some time off.
- Who are you? - My name is Zara Hallam.
And you are? Why did you call this number today? Who am I speaking with? (PHONE BEEPS) Eric.
I just got a call from Aunt Sylvia's phone.
I know a cop when I hear one.
The Thomases aren't victims of a home invasion.
They're in the Witness Protection Program.
- Eric? - (GUN CLICKS) Eric? Who are you? My name is Eric Beaumont, I'm a private negotiator.
What I'd like to know is who are you? Doesn't matter who I am, bro.
Where are the kids? They're safe.
- Where's the money? - If you're willing to prove to me that Lucas and Anita Thomas are safe, I will give it to you.
We don't make deals.
Maybe your boss does.
If you kill me, she will never get what she wants.
That's gonna fall on you, and I'm guessing she's not the type of person that you want to let down.
(ENGINE STARTS) FRANCES: Got it.
Our guys say the FBI found the dead marshal's body.
We're tracking their movements.
(KNOCKING ON DOOR) This is gonna sound dumb, but you shouldn't be near the window.
TAYLOR: Witness Protection? My parents? - Who are they? - Well, we don't know who did this yet, but No, who are my parents? Are they bad people? And w-why didn't they tell us this, because they thought this was a better plan? Listen, I know you think adults don't get teenagers, and that may be especially true in the case of your parents, but you really didn't get them, either.
You thought they were boring and oppressive, when really, all they were trying to do was protect you.
Tell me what's going on.
It may help us find your parents.
Um my-my mom and dad don't let Nolan or I use smartphones or social media.
But I used my friend's phone to, um, set up an account.
I just wanted to do what every kid was doing, you know? Hashtag I get it.
(SCOFFS) You're a dork.
I, uh scrolling through, and I saw a photo of a four-year-old girl I somehow recognized.
The caption read, “Looking for my friend, Taylor, “from kindergarten.
Share and help me find her.
” I kept staring at this photo until it dawned on me why I recognized her.
She was me.
You didn't know that right away? No.
I've never seen a picture of me that young before.
They all burned.
Yeah, but, um, I messaged the girl who posted the photo.
You told her where you lived now.
Is that how they found us? I don't know that, but this isn't your fault, Taylor.
- You didn't know.
- Yeah, you're right.
I didn't know.
I didn't know anything, and I still don't know anything.
Hey, guys.
OLIVER: Hey.
I managed to convince someone to draw a picture for you.
Oh, well, hand it over.
'Cause I do love art.
Hey, you're like a regular Michelangelo.
Nolan, what is this woman saying? (CAR ALARM CHIRPS) (CLEARS THROAT, CHUCKLES) My name is Eric Beaumont.
I'm a private negotiator working for Taylor and Nolan Thomas.
I understand you have their parents.
Frances.
The Thomases have my money.
ERIC: The Thomases did have your money.
Now my team has.
Unlike the Thomases, however, I'm willing to give it to you.
- That's smart of you.
- Before I do, though, I need to know that Lucas and Anita are alive.
Hmm.
Knock yourself out.
They're in the back.
ZARA: I ran her through NCIC.
Frances Sullivan, owner of Sullivan Construction Company.
The business is a front for the Sullivan crime organization - of South Boston.
- (GASPS) Please, get us out of here.
ZARA: Police say Frances has put more bodies in the ground than her husband.
Big fan of death by car bomb.
And she just finished a ten-year stint after someone turned her in for tax evasion.
Okay, so, how do you want to do this? Simple.
You give me five million, I give you them.
The Thomases took five million from you? And if you knew me, you'd know what a poor decision that was.
U.
S.
Marshals don't put people into Witness Protection for stealing from crime bosses.
Lucas and Anita are the ones who put you in jail, aren't they? My accountants.
(SCOFFS) Oh, they were fine helping me to evade the taxes, but then suddenly, they decided they wanted out.
And to get out, they turned you in and grabbed some of your cash to start their lives over, huh? Well, now I'm back, and I want my money.
And I'm gonna give it to you.
But only two and a half million.
That's all that's left.
FRANCES: People don't seem to understand, I didn't get this far by rolling out and not getting what I wanted.
They stole five million from me, and I want five million back! It's impossible to give you something - that no longer exists.
- Then I'll kill 'em.
And their children and you.
You just spent a decade in prison.
Is it worth going back for murders over money that's no longer there? Cops never know how to find the bodies I bury.
But they will find you.
You think I came here alone? Look, you want to add a body to your list of murders, or do you want your money? (INHALES DEEPLY) 4:00 under St.
Martin's Bridge.
Two and a half million, and not a penny less.
Deal.
I'll bring the money to the rendezvous point myself.
No.
Let your team bring the money.
When I have it, you can go.
Oh, and whoever you got outside, tell 'em to leave.
Go ahead, Zara.
(COMM CLANGS) OLIVER: So, we have no communication with Eric? ZARA: No.
But everything is set up.
As long as there aren't any hiccups, the kids will get their parents back.
OLIVER: Okay, uh, - just get here and we'll figure it out.
- Okay.
Okay, I'm coming to you now.
Okay, good news, they've agreed to release - your parents for the money.
- Really? Oh, my gosh, that's so good.
- Nolan, did you hear that? - (CRYING) Nolan.
What's wrong, little man? Hey, Nolan.
Buddy, listen, this is a good thing.
We've done thousands of negotiations.
Everyone always comes home safe.
(SNIFFLING) Nolan, do you do you know something? Nolan, if you do, please tell us.
It would really help.
Here.
Nolan this woman, she's saying something, yelling something, right? Okay, there's a step.
Now, is now, is she saying she's gonna hurt someone? Ah, there's a nod.
Now we're talking.
You see what I did there? That was a little joke.
Okay, here's the hard part, actually talking.
(WHIMPERS) You know what I used to do when I was your age and I was scared? I'd close my eyes and I'd say aloud exactly what the thing was that I feared.
Naming it made me feel like it didn't have control over me.
Like I wasn't scared, even if I was.
She told the man to get the money (SNIFFLES) then to kill everyone.
She said Mom and Dad had betrayed her, and that nobody who betrays her lives.
(SOBBING) It's okay.
Good boy.
(NOLAN SOBBING) ERIC: Why didn't you tell your kids? Because we didn't think they were ready.
We just wanted them to grow up - normally.
- Yeah.
I'm not sure Taylor thinks you've been terribly successful in that endeavor.
ANITA: Yeah, I know.
I mean, we're not perfect.
That's evident in the fact we worked for Frances once.
Well, when the kids came, we just wanted out.
LUCAS: When you put away someone like Frances, we knew if we were gonna start over and have any semblance of a decent life, we needed that cash.
- You keep weapons in the house? - What? No.
Really? Because I saw a box of ammo on your bedroom floor.
It had remnants of duct tape on it, like it had been hidden somewhere.
You told me you got rid of it.
LUCAS: How could I? Knowing this might happen one day? Well, where was it then, when they were beating us? The kids don't know I have it.
Well, Mr.
Thomas, I think that I think that Taylor might.
(GASPS) TAYLOR: Frances is going to kill them, even if we pay.
So, what are we gonna do? We can't just hand over the money.
Taylor, I know this is a setback, but we've dealt with setbacks before.
If we could get in touch with Eric (KNOCK AT DOOR) Get in the other room with Nolan.
CYNTHIA: What the hell is going on? Tony Rankin, U.
S.
Marshal.
TONY: I became alerted to the Thomases' situation this morning after Sylvia Winwood, the U.
S.
Marshal in charge of the family, was found murdered.
- Aunt Sylvia.
- I grabbed her phone and found Ms.
Hallam's number.
He tracked me using my cell's GPS.
TONY: A couple of days ago, Taylor's parents alerted Sylvia of a photo posted online of their daughter.
Turns out Frances's organization posted it themselves to smoke out the family.
- It worked.
- TONY: It did.
We figure before Sylvia could even check into the post, Frances's men showed up at Sylvia's apartment in New York.
- Now she's dead.
- She has Taylor and Nolan's parents, along with our boss.
Ms.
Hallam told me.
The most important thing now, though, is the safety of the children.
Under the direction of Canadian law enforcement, I've been given permission to take them into custody until everything is settled.
We're going to a Sûreté du Québec safe house.
OLIVER: Yeah.
Okay.
That makes sense.
Could you step outside and let us break it to them, though? They've, uh had a rough time.
So what's in the bag? Were you planning on telling me about this? OLIVER: We can explain.
TONY: I'm sure you can.
But considering the Thomases' connection to organized crime, it's my duty to seize this.
OLIVER: Yeah, you can't do that.
We're meeting Frances in an hour.
You have a meeting scheduled with a woman who murdered a U.
S.
Marshal? Yes, and you can't take that money because CYNTHIA: Maybe he can.
Nolan told us that Frances isn't planning on keeping up her end of the bargain.
Since she isn't acting in good faith - We need to switch up our plan.
- TONY: What, exactly, are you getting at, Ms.
Walker? A sting.
We go to the meet with the money, you contact your liaison at the Sûreté du Québec and have them standing by.
We make the exchange, and when the parents are safe, the Sûreté steps in.
U.
S.
Marshal Service already failed them once.
This is your chance to make it better.
(SIGHS) I'll get in touch with the Sûreté du Québec to get a team sorted, and then I'll take the kids to a safe house outside of the city.
Thank you.
OLIVER: I know you guys are nervous, but this is the best thing.
Frances will be arrested, sent back to prison, and everything will be back to normal.
Normal? What's that? Money's loaded in the SUV.
Marshal's waiting for you guys in the car.
Okay, give it up.
- When you have your money - You'll have them.
And you'll leave them alone so they can move on with their lives? They stole from me, Beaumont.
But they won't die by my hand.
TIG: Boss.
What? They've split up.
The Marshal's not headed to the exchange.
FRANCES: Let's stick to the plan, but I'll get the Marshal.
You want to call it off? FRANCES: No.
One of them's got my money.
Okay.
- Money.
- Hang on.
- Move.
- (WHIMPERS) - Aah.
- Okay, easy.
Get out.
Yeah.
Get them.
Thank you.
- Where are our kids? - OLIVER: They're okay.
The U.
S.
Marshal took them to a safe house.
As soon as the police see that you're fine, - they'll take you there.
- Whoa, Marshal? - Yeah.
- No, no.
That must be who she's gone after.
(OFFICERS SHOUTING IN FRENCH) - Oliver, Frances knows.
- What? One of her guys was alerted to something at the last minute.
I saw them, they were tracking something.
ZARA: Must've been the Marshal.
She thinks he has her money.
The kids.
No.
No.
- Okay.
Anita - Wait! Wait! Lucas, take it easy.
It's under control.
Everything's gonna be fine.
ZARA: I know the location.
I think Taylor's got a gun.
Yeah.
TONY: Not much further now.
You guys doing okay? Good.
What the hell? (BOTH SCREAMING) Uh, hey, kids.
I'm sorry, but your driver might just have a little something that belongs to me.
(LINE RINGING) ZARA: That was three times.
Something's wrong.
Try again.
(LINE RINGS, CLICKS) - Marshal, this is - FRANCES: Mr.
Beaumont.
We had a deal.
Where are the kids, Frances? They're safe.
Unfortunately, the Marshal isn't.
(SIGHS) All right, um, l-let's talk, okay? Talk? Now? After you set me up? Hey.
Out.
OLIVER: You had no plans - to let that family live.
- Now you listen to me.
Come on.
Out.
The Marshal didn't have the money, but he did have these kids, so you tell Mr.
and Mrs.
Thomas unless I get that $2.
5 million they owe me, I'm keeping them.
I don't like kids.
They annoy me.
So, when I get annoyed (GUNSHOT) Frances? Nolan, run.
- Stupid girl.
- Run, Nolan! - TAYLOR: Drop it.
Drop your gun.
- FRANCES: I can see how hard you're trying to be tough.
I could just walk right over there and take that gun out of your hand.
(GUNSHOT) Know what I do to people who threaten me? I'm not threatening you.
I'm gonna kill you.
Even if you get your money and leave, it won't matter.
Your parents took what was mine, you know.
They're not good people, Taylor.
Shut up.
Shut up! As long as you're alive, my family will always have to look over their shoulder.
And if I kill you right now, we won't have to do that anymore.
(VEHICLE APPROACHING) (SIRENS WAILING) Taylor! I got it.
Taylor, put the gun down.
- No.
- OLIVER: We're here.
The police are here.
Frances will go to jail for kidnapping, for murder.
- She'll never get out.
- Taylor! TAYLOR: It doesn't matter.
Locking her back up won't do anything.
She still has her men.
What if she escapes, or-or gets let out? She needs to die.
OLIVER: Okay, Taylor, if you believe putting a bullet in her head is gonna make you and your family free, you're mistaken.
Taking a human life will stay with you forever.
Good.
I hope it does 'cause each time I remember, I'll think of what it gave us, a normal life.
OLIVER: Yeah, but your life won't be normal.
There are people, really strong people, who have killed others for the right reasons, self-defense or to save a loved one, and their lives still turned out to be the opposite of normal, the opposite of free.
Taylor, it shatters them.
(CRYING): I don't want to live like this anymore.
You don't have to.
Okay, Taylor.
Look at me.
Taylor, put down the gun, please.
Just put it down.
It's okay.
It's okay.
It's okay, it's over.
Taylor! Taylor! Mom! CYNTHIA: Eric.
Is everything okay? LUCAS: Hey, guys.
Who's ready for ice cream? - I am.
- Let's go then.
And afterwards, we thought maybe we'd stop by the mall, pick up a couple of things.
Like what? I don't know, like some new clothes, or a smartphone? - Seriously? - Totally.
- ANITA: Thank you so much.
- No, no, we had to.
There was no way Frances would ever leave you guys alone.
And nice job playing along and sneaking out the back.
You know, at first I wasn't sure about this whole strawberry, minty, sprinkly thing, but I think you might be on to something.
So guys, how does it feel? To finally, actually be free, to relocate and move on with your lives? No more looking over your shoulder.
And no more seeing you.
Yeah, that's true, but, uh, you know, we'll always have this place.
(CHUCKLES): Aw.
TAYLOR: Um, you know, I'm really sorry for everything.
Everything I-I said.
For the gun Taylor, stop.
You don't have to.
Just promise me one thing.
Wherever you do end up, you won't change.
Okay.
Good.
And, for the record - No.
Mm-mm.
- Yes.
This scarf - is fire.
- No.
- Yeah.
- (LAUGHS) Yeah, you want to try it on? It's fire.
You want to, you want to (OVERLAPPING CHATTER) Only human Get a little impaired sometimes We're just people We're gonna be all right.
- Don't look at me like that.
- (LAUGHS)
