Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman s02e12 Episode Script

The Eyes Have It

After him, you idiot! Somebody, help! What are you doing? Sorry, miss, but I don't have time to explain.
No, no, no! No need to be alarmed, I'm a doctor.
It's okay, Harry, he's a doctor.
- Munch? - Over here, doctor.
- Do you have the device? - He hasn't got it.
- I don't know what he did with it.
- Ask him where it is and don't take no for an answer.
Well, I don't think that's gonna be possible, doc.
Police! Open this door.
- That way.
- No, that way.
Go.
Go.
You find them? I have no idea what happened.
The last thing I remember is him pushing me back into the apartment, saying: "I'm sorry, miss.
" Who is he? And you found her in some kind of trance? Yeah.
I shook her, and I yelled at her, and it didn't seem to have any effect.
After a few minutes, she came out of it by herself.
Lois, the coroner's here.
He's a doctor.
- Want him to look you over? - No, thanks.
I prefer doctors with live patients.
Who's the dead guy? Neighbors say that two other men came into this apartment.
Yes, you told me.
And I told you I didn't see anyone.
He didn't see anybody either.
Don't the police investigate and then send you the information? You're an assistant D.
A.
, not a cop.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but my lips are moving.
Is there any sound coming out? Can you tell me who the dead guy is? - I'm sure Mayson was - I heard the call on my scanner.
I came by just to make sure you're okay.
Bulgaria adopted the gold standard in 1897.
The deceased is Neal Faraday.
Does that name mean anything to you? No.
But it will.
I plan to learn everything there is to know about Neal Faraday.
According to this, there are only eight people on the planet who can understand Dr.
Faraday's theories.
And I can tell you this right now, Lois.
I am not one of them.
If he's famous enough to be in that magazine how come we've never heard of him? Because there are eight people on the planet Who can understand his theories.
Okay, I get it.
All right, listen to this.
"The nonlinear amplifier multiplies the input signal with obvious trigonomic results.
" - Obvious to whom? - The result would be amplified waves with frequencies equal to the sum and difference of the original frequencies.
What? - What did I just say? - I have absolutely no idea.
Did I just explain what you were talking about? I don't know.
How could I do that? Well, there's no record of Dr.
Faraday's whereabouts for the last three years.
A brilliant scientist leaves his teaching post cuts off his relationships with family and friends, and disappears.
Why would he do that? What was he working on? I don't know, Lois.
Thank you.
Listen, C.
K.
, when a girl gives you her phone number - Why did you just throw that away? - It doesn't work.
Maybe it just needs a refill.
No, it's probably disposable, everything is.
You know, that is one of the big problems with this world.
Disposable products, disposable relationships disposable lives.
If everything is so expendable, what happens to friendship to truth, to loyalty? It's a pen, Clark.
But if you feel so strongly about it, be my guest.
It's yours.
Thank you.
We must recover that device.
It's the prototype.
The only one in existence.
Without it, the project is doomed.
Faraday has obviously used it on this reporter babe.
The information's in her brain.
You gotta get her too.
Well, the information is safer now.
We're the only ones who know how to retrieve it.
Yeah, it leaks.
What leaks? The information leaks right out of her brain.
- Really? - Yeah.
Well, then we need the device, and we need the girl.
We must find a way to neutralize Superman.
Yeah.
Don't look at me.
I just work here.
You're a doctor.
You're smart.
You come up with something.
- I'm an eye doctor.
- Okay, do something to his eyes.
And that was the last article he submitted to your magazine? I'm sorry, your journal.
Could you tell me what that article was about? Do you know anybody who might have some idea of Dr.
Faraday's whereabouts after he stopped teaching at the university? Could you put that in layman's terms? I guess not.
No wonder it wouldn't work, Lois.
It's not a pen, it's a flashlight.
Hi, Mayson.
Do you have more questions for me? No.
Okay, thank you.
Light.
What? Light.
Apparently, Dr.
Faraday understood the properties of light better than anyone who's ever lived.
Those properties can only be explained to people who already understand them.
- Hi, Mayson.
- Hi, Clark.
- Can I talk to you for a minute? - Sure.
Oh, well, if you'll excuse me, I have something to do.
Over there.
I know you're a really nice guy, Clark and I don't mean to be forward but I really like you.
- I like you too, Mayson.
Good, that makes this easier.
I have a cabin in the mountains.
I was gonna go up for the weekend, leaving tomorrow after work and I was wondering if you would like to join me? Don't answer me now, just hear me out.
- Lois Lane.
- It's cold this time of year but there's a fireplace.
Who is this? Never mind who I am.
If you wanna know about Dr.
Faraday come to Metropolitan Park, east of the pond.
Come now, and come alone.
If you bring anybody with you, you will learn nothing.
Something important? No.
No.
No, nothing as important as whatever you and Mayson are talking about.
How about it? I'll pick you up tomorrow after work? - That sounds great, Mayson - Hey, Mayson.
How you doing? How's the investigation going? Police are having trouble tracing Dr.
Faraday's whereabouts for the last few years.
- Well, so are some of my reporters.
I mean, you've come up with Well, what, Clark? - Not much, Perry, but - See? Excuses.
Sometimes I think my name's "Perry But.
" "Oh, I tried, Perry, but" "I'm sorry, Perry, but" "I wish Perry, but" That reminds me of the time I first became an editor.
Well, there was this young reporter I don't think he'd been with the Planet more than a couple weeks.
Mater of fact, he reminded me of you, a little bit, you know.
Gosh, you all could've been brothers.
Hello? Hello.
I'm Lois Lane.
We know who you are, Miss Lane.
Where's the device? - Excuse me? - Dr.
Faraday's device? - Where is it? - I don't know what you're talking about.
- Who are you? - Where is Superman? I don't know.
You said you were gonna tell me about Dr.
Faraday.
Come on, do I really have to shoot her? No, Munch.
We're just going to lure Superman.
Tell me, Miss Lane, does Superman always appear when you find yourself in mortal danger? I don't think that's a question I wanna hear when I'm standing out here with a light shining in my face talking to someone I don't know, that I can't see.
Well, would you be kind enough to answer it anyway? Well, yes, he does.
At least, he has so far but I'm not sure that's a theory I wanna test right this instant.
Go.
Go! Get her! Superman, help! - Think it worked? - I don't know.
Oh, you don't know.
- Thanks, Superman.
- You're welcome, Lois.
I don't want you to think I'm complaining, I'm just curious.
Why are you flying so slow? Well, because I can't see.
I can't see anything at all.
Okay, a little to the left.
Now, down, just a few feet.
No, you've gone too far.
Up, up.
A little more.
Now.
Now.
Now.
Now you've gone a little bit past it, so come to your right.
To your right a little bit, and then come straight in.
- Or to the left.
- Sorry.
No, no, it's my fault.
I Can I get you anything? I just don't know what to do.
I'm so sorry.
Here.
Here, sit down.
Is there anybody that I can call? Just tell me what to do to help you.
You could let me sleep on your couch tonight.
- You sleep? - Yes, I sleep.
I mean, it's not like I thought you were, you know, a bat that flies around all night.
I just I never really thought of you sleeping, I guess.
- Are you hungry? - No.
I'm not hungry.
Thank you.
And I'll try not to impose on you past tonight.
It's probably temporary.
And I'm sure everything will be fine by tomorrow.
Yeah, I'm sure you're absolutely right.
And you're not imposing.
Why don't I just sit at the table.
- Lois? - Yes? I know this is newsworthy, the fact that I'm blind.
But if the criminal element finds out that I'm harmless to them they'll have a field day.
- I understand.
I won't print a thing.
- I won't tell anyone.
- Thank you.
- What about Clark? - What about him? - Should I tell him, or should I not tell him? - Lf you see Clark you can tell him.
Of course I'll see him.
Why wouldn't I see him? Is it any better? Can you see anything at all? No.
Lois, I was wondering if STAR Labs had anyone on staff who might be able to help me.
Well, yeah, I'm sure they would.
That's a good idea.
They open at 9.
I'll give them a call.
Lois, when I said I liked my bacon crisp, I didn't mean Alternating current is deadlier than direct current.
I have some Pop-Tarts.
Lois, have you seen Clark? I need to talk to him.
- You could talk to me.
- It's kind of a guy thing.
That means it's about prostate trouble or about women.
You're too young for prostate trouble.
That means you wanna talk to Clark about women.
I say, if you wanna know something, go to the source.
All right.
I guess you're right.
Here it is.
If a girl gives you her number You don't ask for it, she just gives it to you and tells you to call her sometime.
So you do, and she doesn't call you back how long are you supposed to wait before you call her again? Jimmy, I'm going to give you the secret to success about women.
- You are? - Yes.
The Pacific box jellyfish is the most dangerous animal in the ocean.
Matt.
Hi, it's Lois Lane.
Oh, this is an emergency.
I need you to help me with I don't mean to be rude.
- It's sort of private.
- No, no, I just You were gonna tell me the secret to success with women.
Right.
It's It'll come back to me, probably.
Matt, you can't tell anyone about this.
Secret of the universe, yanked out from underneath me like a cheap rug.
Dr.
Bannergy? You sure he's the best? Okay, thanks, Matt.
I appreciate your help and your discretion.
Dr.
Bannergy will be very happy to see your friend Superman, Miss Lane.
Not a good idea.
- Excuse me, sir.
Could you? - Get a job, you bum.
Excuse me, sir.
I'm sorry.
Could you tell me where the nearest pay phone is, please? - Right.
Sir? Could? Yes, I'd like to make a collect call, please.
Clark Kent.
Hi, Mom.
- Come here! Give me your money.
- Help me.
No, Mom, I'm staying at Lois', but I'm staying there as Superman.
So if you come, bring your stuff by my place and - Help me! - Get over here! What's happening? What's going on? - Are you all right? - I'm fine.
Your voice, it sounds very familiar.
Who are you? - I'm Superman.
- Do you see my cane? I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were blind.
- Here you go.
- Thank you.
- Thank you for saving me.
- You're welcome.
I'm a little bit turned around.
I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of West 57th Street.
I think it's that way.
Superman? His name is Bannergy.
He's on his way.
I'll be there as soon as I can.
- Lois, where's Clark? - I don't know.
Well, you're his partner, aren't you? Yes, I'm his partner, not his keeper.
- You two fighting again? - Clark and I don't fight.
We disagree sometimes.
Well, it's just not like Clark to be late without calling in.
Maybe he left early on his weekend date.
If I had a babe like that Mayson Drake after me, I'd leave early.
Well, you probably would, Jimmy.
But it's not Clark's style to go chasing after some babe.
"Babe.
" Would you two use some other word besides babe? I don't think she is such a babe, anyway.
You think you could find him for me, please? I have something else to do, Perry.
Besides, Jimmy's probably right.
Men just seem to get all feeble-minded when a kind-of-attractive woman bats their eyes at them, even Clark.
If a spin wheel's geared internally with a pinion the wheels rotate in the same direction.
Dr.
Bannergy, I presume.
Coming.
Hello, Mr.
Superman.
I am Dr.
Bannergy, from STAR Labs.
And this is my assistant, Mr.
Gomez.
Miss Lane has summoned us.
How may we serve you? - So you're completely without sight? - Yes.
- No shapes, no colors? - No.
You cannot perceive the light I'm shining in your eyes at this very moment? No.
Dr.
Bannergy, what is Mr.
Gomez doing? He is merely looking for the facilities, Mr.
Superman.
Like you, he is visually challenged.
But I am sure he will be much more careful in the future.
Won't you, Mr.
Gomez? So tell me, Mr.
Superman, how did this great tragedy occur? Someone shined a light into my eyes, a purplish light.
I do not know what happened, of course.
How could I? But it is the case, when ultraviolet light is shined on certain substances it can turn them opaque.
Substances that are otherwise transparent, like clear glass for example.
Perhaps it is the same with the Kryptonian eye.
An interesting theory, yes? Though the loss of sight is quite tragic the man who came up with this method of blinding you is clearly a genius.
- I'd like to meet him.
- So would I.
But of course, your eyes are so much more important than this.
I apologize to you for wandering down this path of theoretical science when you are most disturbed - Superman, it's the men from the park the men who blinded you.
Lois? Lois, are you okay? Come on! Come on.
Lois? Yeah, Superman, I'm okay.
No, I'm not.
I'm mad.
I'm furious.
It's always the same thing.
Where is Clark Kent when anybody needs him? Lois, I'm sure he He's supposed to be your friend, but is he here for you? For me? I'm sure there's a rational explanation His two best friends need his help right now, and where is he? - Lf he could be here - He's in the mountains with Mayson Drake.
I understand why he didn't want us to go to Lois' place with our suitcases in our hands, saying, "Where's our boy?" But why couldn't we have left the suitcases in a locker at the airport? A child of 4 can pick those locks.
Maybe we should have that child here with us now.
I'm not doing very well.
You wanna try? I have absolutely no idea how to pick a lock.
You just have to align the tumblers to the shear point.
That would be fine, if I had a clue what "shear point" means.
Where the tumblers open up to the top of the cylinder but understanding that and doing that are two different things.
- You want me to give it a go? - Oh, please.
Thanks.
So you guys are spending the weekend with Clark? - He's expecting you, right? - Yeah.
Sure.
Well, he called and said he needed some help with something.
And ordinarily we'd just stay here until he came home but it's cold and Martha's been reading a book about locks, so - You knocked, right? - Oh, yeah, sure.
You know, I think maybe you guys should prepare yourself for Well, I don't think Clark's gonna be here this weekend.
Perry wanted me to look for him, but it's a waste of time.
- What are you saying, Jimmy? - Well, Clark's gone off with a date.
Maybe I shouldn't say anything.
I just think knowing is better than sitting around all weekend not knowing, right? Thanks.
I guess it would help if I knew what to look for.
Must be small, or he wouldn't have been looking underneath that chair.
Think back two nights ago, back when Dr.
Faraday was here.
Was he holding anything in his hand? I don't know.
I tried to remember, I just don't.
Well, I guess that's it.
No place else to look.
- I wish I could help.
- Oh, you did help.
You lifted the furniture.
Really heavy furniture that No, I wish I could really help.
If I could see, I could search this place in seconds.
I don't know what to do when I see you feeling for the furniture or the wall.
I don't know if I should help you, or if I should let you figure it out yourself.
- I mean, I don't wanna make you feel - Helpless? Dependent? Clumsy? Thanks for keeping it light.
I don't like this.
I do feel helpless and dependent and clumsy.
But you have to play the hand that you've been dealt.
If this blindness turns out to be permanent well, then I'll have to figure out how to be the best blind person I can.
Because I really do believe that we're all put here on this earth or whatever planet we're put on, to do better than we think we can to be kind, helpful generous and forgiving.
You know I'll be here for you, no matter what.
I care about you a lot, Superman.
Thank you, Lois.
I care about you too.
Now, remember, Martha, he's not Clark.
- He's not our son.
He's Superman.
- Okay.
It's the Kents.
The Kents? Clark's parents? How do you know? Of course.
- Hi, Lois.
- Martha.
Jonathan.
Come in.
Superman, how are you? We're sorry, we should've called.
But Clark wasn't home, and so we thought - I guess we didn't think.
- No.
No, please.
I know Lois is always happy to see you, and so am I.
- Lois? - Over here.
Do you have any oolong tea? - Oolong? - Oolong.
- No.
Do you want some? - Lf it wouldn't be too much trouble.
Oolong sounds wonderful.
Lois, let's you and me go get these tea-drinkers some oolong.
- Superman - Everything's fine, Lois.
I just want some oolong, really.
Mom, when I called you, I told you you didn't have to come.
Oh, Clark, honey, of course we're here.
Your dad and I love you more than anything on this earth.
- I told you he left town early.
- Jimmy, listen, McClain called in sick.
- Can you process this film for me? - Sure, chief.
Listen, Clark's not home, right? And he's so keen on this trip to the mountains he completely forgot that his parents were coming to visit this weekend.
C.
K.
Is so cool.
And that Mayson Drake, I mean, she is gorgeous! - Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy.
- Hi, is Clark around? - We thought he was with you.
- No, he's not around, Mayson.
Maybe I misunderstood when I was supposed to pick him up.
Do you know when he'll be back? No, I don't think I do.
No, Mayson, I don't know when he'll be back.
You're trying to be nice, aren't you? You're trying not to have to tell me that I've been stood up.
- I don't believe it.
- I know what you mean, Jimmy.
- I thought Clark was bigger than that.
- She came on to him.
All he had to do was show up.
Why would he give that up? Cold feet, Jimmy.
Cold feet.
When you let a woman do the chasing next thing you know, you're buying a tux and you're walking down the aisle.
Now, you remember that.
Don't forget it.
All right.
I can't believe it, they had real scones.
Martha loves real scones.
Superman likes them too, as I recall.
Do you have butter? Lois, Superman is a strong young man, inside, where it counts.
He knows you're here for him.
We're all here for him.
I don't understand how Clark could go away for the weekend with a woman he hardly knows, and now of all times.
You know, he and Superman are friends, and Superman needs him.
- Does Clark know that? - No.
I guess not.
I'm sorry, Jonathan.
I know Clark's a good person and a good friend.
- I'm just upset about Superman.
- I understand, Lois.
It's just, I think that the person Hey, what are you doing? Hey, you! Honey, please, sit down.
I can't, Mom.
I never felt so helpless in my entire life.
- Where is she? - You just called her 10 minutes ago, son.
Finally.
Easy.
Easy.
Mayson? - Yes? - Thank you for coming.
I'm Jonathan Kent.
This is my wife, Martha.
- Kent? - I think you know our son.
Clark? What's going on here? And if Lois has been kidnapped, why aren't you out looking for her? Please, Miss Drake, come sit down.
We'll try and explain it.
Sit down, Miss Lane.
If you do not sit down, I will turn Munch loose on you which I prefer not to do.
Munch does not entirely enjoy hurting people but it is part of his job description, and he is quite good at it.
Thank you.
Now, tell me, where is the device, Miss Lane? Don't you think I would tell you if I knew? Superman is more important to me than this stupid thingamajig that I never saw and don't even know what it is.
Pretty good point.
Okay, I will tell you what it is what it means, what it's capable of doing and then you will tell me where it is.
We've learned a lot in two days.
The dead man, Dr.
Faraday, was a genius.
His experiments were funded by a wealthy eye doctor named Harold P.
Leit.
What were they working on? Dr.
Faraday developed a device which can carry knowledge on a beam of light through the eye, directly to the brain.
Oh, my.
- A terrible thing in the wrong hands.
- Yes.
And we can assume that Dr.
Leit's hands are definitely the wrong hands.
And so you see, Miss Lane, why this device is so very important to me.
Pretty much allow you to control the world, wouldn't it? - Yeah, pretty much.
- No, no, no.
My motives are purely altruistic, I assure you.
It gives everyone equal access to knowledge.
And as we all know, knowledge is power.
He used it on me, didn't he? Dr.
Faraday, before he died.
There are things in my brain that I don't know how they got there.
I don't have access to them, really.
They just sort of seem to leak out from time to time.
Well, it's a two-step process.
You see, the information is implanted in your brain.
But then it needs to be switched on, so to speak.
Now, tell me, where is the device? What does it look like? - I really don't know.
- All right, I will humor you.
It looks like a ballpoint pen.
A gleaming silver ballpoint pen.
I can see in your eyes that you do know where it is.
And I can see that Dr.
Faraday had a good reason for you not to have it.
Oh, let's don't be rude, okay, Miss Lane? Munch You're forgetting that we do have a bargaining chip.
Tell me where the device is, and I'll give you the antidote for Superman's blindness.
There's an antidote? How do I know you're telling the truth? Well, either I am or I'm not.
All right.
- Well? - You first.
- Oh, I don't think so.
- Then we have a problem because I don't trust you to keep your side of the bargain.
You don't seem to grasp that you're in a life-or-death situation, Miss Lane and you're outnumbered.
Well, you can kill me anytime.
I'd rather you didn't, but there doesn't seem to be much I can do about it.
Or you can trust me.
You tell me what I wanna know, and I will tell you what you wanna know.
You're right.
I can kill you anytime, Miss Lane.
Actually, it was brilliantly simple.
I used ultraviolet light to blind Superman.
Ultraviolet light is invisible to the naked eye.
Well, I merely added some visible light from the cold end of the spectrum to help me guide the light into Superman's eyes.
- The antidote is infrared light.
- Very good, Miss Lane.
Tell me, is that Dr.
Faraday's knowledge or yours? Now, tell me, where is Faraday's device? It's at the Daily Planet.
- What did you say? - It looks like a silver ballpoint pen.
- You know where it is, don't you? - Yes.
- Good, let's call the police.
- No.
- Why not? - Lois probably told them where it is.
- So? - So if the police go charging in there Lois will be in even more danger.
I'll handle this myself.
- Is this the good window? - Yes, but it's - You're incapacitated.
- Wait! Looks like he misjudged the distance to the ground.
- Is he okay? - Yes, dear, I imagine so.
He is Superman.
How is he gonna get there if he can't see where he's going? Daily Planet, please.
- Where is it? - It's over there.
You lied to me.
No, I didn't.
It was here.
Enough! No more Mr.
Nice Guy.
I will extract it from you painfully.
Oh, you will wish you had not lied to me, Miss Lane.
Munch.
- She's gone.
- Yes, doctor.
- You have a flashlight? - No, doctor.
- Find her! - Okay, doctor.
You go that way.
I'll go this way.
Oh, Miss Lane.
Come out, come out, wherever you are.
I found her, doctor.
Come here.
I know you're here, Superman.
You're right.
I am here, Dr.
Leit, and I have the device.
Lois, can you get to where I am? - No! - Lois, are you all right? She's fine for now, Superman.
And she'll stay fine if you'll simply roll the device toward the sound of my voice.
Okay, doctor, catch.
Nice try, Superman.
Munch, retrieve the device, please.
Sure.
Superman, look this way.
- Drop the device.
- No, no.
Munch! - Munch, give it to me.
- What? Give it to me.
Thank you, Superman.
No, thank you, Lois.
- Munch? - What? - Can you see? - See what? - I'm blind! - Yeah.
Yeah, I think I am too.
Maybe it's a good thing the device was destroyed.
Technology and human nature sometimes are a volatile mix, aren't they? Like Frankenstein.
In bodies of uniform density, the center of gravity depends only on the shape of the body.
There she goes again.
- Well, maybe we'll get used to it, huh? - I don't know.
- Hi.
- Hi.
Clark I understand how you feel, son.
But I want you to remember that women are people too.
They deserve fair treatment.
- Hi.
- I want you to know I was really humiliated when you stood me up.
I still think it was a rotten thing for you to do.
But I've met your parents, and they're such wonderful people that I'm willing to assume any son of theirs wouldn't do what you did and that this weekend was a misunderstanding.
I don't want an explanation, and I won't ask you out again.
But if you wanna ask me, I probably won't say no.
They just spent a weekend together.
A three-day weekend.
I can't believe she has to see him again so soon.
They didn't go.
- What? - He stood her up.
What? Clark, if you weren't with Mayson, where have you been the last three days?
