Previously on "Quantum Leap"
- Do you like being a mom?
- I love it.
All that matters is
keeping Jeffrey safe.
- I'm scared.
- What do I always say?
Courage is a choice.
Josh dies in 18 months.
It's a ruptured aortic aneurysm.
"Dear Hannah, tell Josh
to check his heart immediately.
All my love, Ben."
Your employee, Ian Wright,
stole my quantum chip.
I trust you'll, uh, sort this out.
If they fire me,
then they will not have the
code to bring Ben back home.
My hands are tied.
Somebody has to take the fall
for what happened.
Gideon Red wants a head on a platter,
so I'm giving him mine.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
The Pentagon can't do this to you.
They can't force you to resign.
No one is forcing me.
I did what I had to do,
what's best for the project.
What's best for Quantum Leap
is that you're a part of it.
We have to fight this.
Well, what's done is done.
I don't accept that.
Well, you're gonna need to.
Listen, this project
is about to be under siege.
Ian, Addison, and Ben
are gonna need you to focus
on things you can control.
Me leaving isn't one of those things.
No.
I can't imagine this place without you.
Please stay.
We should get a lock on Ben any second.
Stay for one last leap?
Not this time.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

I'm a firefighter. Cool.
Don't just stand there! Put it out!
Ahh! Ahh!
Right.
What about him? Is he
Yeah. He's, uh
He's okay.
What happened?
We were testing my new circuit board
when all of the sudden,
it started sparking and exploding.
And then he got electrocuted
and passed out.
You made this?
It's pretty advanced.
How would you know?
What's the situation up there, Burton?
Under control.
We need medical assistance on
- 28.
- 28.
Copy that. Stand by.
Don't worry, your dad's gonna be okay.
He's not my dad. That's my neighbor.
Oh.
My dad died a couple years back.
Back when we were living in New Jersey.
I'm sorry to hear that.
What about your mother? Where is she?
Oh, thank God.
Jeffrey, how many times have I told you
not to plug anything into the wall
without triple-checking the breaker?
- I did, I swear.
- Jeffrey?
[GENTLE MUSIC]

Hannah.

Uh, thank you for saving my son.

Just doing my job, ma'am.
Professor Priestly teaches
computer science at the university.
When he learned that Jeffrey
was building one of his own,
he offered to help and to look after him
whenever I get held up in D.C.
You work in D.C. now?
Yep, still in physics, but
things have been a little tough.
You know, if times are tight,
investing in some sure things
like Bristol-Myers Squibb
right now or in the future,
when you hear about it,
Apple or Facebook.
No, Ben, I'm not gonna do that.
It's gotta be against the rules.
I heard about Josh.
I'm so sorry.
It's not your fault.
You tried, and I love you for that.
I gotta go check on Jeffrey.
Ben.
Addison? You okay? What's wrong?
Magic just resigned
as the head of Quantum Leap.
- What? Why? Is he okay?
- He's fine.
When you went missing
and the program was shut down,
Ian cut a secret deal
- to continue the search.
- With who?
A Silicon Valley billionaire
named Gideon Rydge.
Now the Pentagon's found out,
and they almost pulled the entire team.
So Magic fell on the sword.
No good deed goes unpunished.
Hannah's here?
Yeah, so if you or Ziggy or the universe
has any more bad news, I'll pass.
Okay, Ziggy says
this leap isn't about Hannah.
- They never are, not directly.
- Fair point.
Okay, you are Captain Otis
Burton, a husband, father,
and a 20-year veteran of the
Baltimore Fire Department,
which you're about to
retire from in about a month.
I've seen enough movies
to know that never ends well.
And it says you were here
to save someone else.
That's it? That's all Ziggy's got?
It says there's a 74% chance
that the fire
was an isolated incident and you're here
for some other reason entirely.
[SIGHS]
And I will go figure out
what that reason is.
- Please.
- Yeah.
As soon as he exits the building,
I've been ordered
to deactivate Magic's key cards
and erase his access codes.
Like he was never even here.
Those asses in Washington have no idea
what this team has been through
for the past three years.
I mean, the sacrifices that we've made.
And this is how they repay us?
[SOMBER MUSIC]

Well
I guess this is it.
This isn't right.
I mean, I'm the one
who brought Gideon Rydge in.
It's my fault.
You should have let them fire me.
No. This project needs you.
Ben needs you.
Now, use the time I bought you
and finish that DARPA equation.
You mean the one that's already proven
to be impossible to crack.
You'll find a way.
Bring him home.
Yes, sir.

Addison.
Magic, I
Until the Pentagon picks my replacement,
I have suggested an interim head
to handle the day-to-day.
Okay, who? I'll get him up to speed.
You, Jenn.
Say what now?
You're the head of security.
You know this place inside out.
Who better to keep things
locked down tight?
You really think they're
gonna trust the operations
of a top secret multi-billion dollar
military science project to an ex-con?
For now they are.
Trust in yourself, Jenn, like I do.
And know that I am deeply proud.

Hey, come on, hmm?

I'm proud of all of you.
The future of Quantum Leap
is in your hands now.
- It's so good to see you.
- I can't believe you're here.
[CHUCKLES]
You go.
It's been three leaps.
I was beginning to think
I might never see you again.
Well, when you said next leap
maybe it should be the two
of us sitting by a fire,
this wasn't exactly
the fireplace I had in mind.
[LAUGHS]
Good news is, we think the
fire is an isolated incident,
so you're safe here with me.
I'm always safe with you.
[SOFT MUSIC]

Do I look old?

Hannah, you look the same
every time I see you.
Beautiful.

But you do seem distant.

Well, things have been
challenging since Josh died.
Is that why?
Are you mad at me?
Ben, no.
Hannah.
Because of you, I've started to dabble
in theoretical physics.
Our meetings are fixed points
in space-time,
which can be used as the basis
for all sorts of extrapolations.
That sounds like a good thing.
Potentially.
But so far,
no matter how many different ways
I look at your path,
there's only one constant.
This is the last time we cross, Ben.
And we're never gonna see each
other again.
[LOUD EXPLOSION]

So much for an isolated incident.

[SIREN WAILING]
[TENSE MUSIC]
- Was that an explosion?
- It sure felt like it.
Where?
20th floor. A transformer blew.
Eight floors below us.
Stay here. I'll be right back.
Okay, the Excelsior was supposed to be
the crown jewel of the Baltimore
skyscraper boom in the '70s.
But in reality, it was a disaster.
The developers cut corners
to save money and increase profits.
Let me guess, they used cheap
aluminum wiring instead of copper?
Throughout the top half of the building,
violating all sorts of building codes,
which they skirted
by bribing city inspectors.
Negligence on that scale
would leave this building
- prone to electrical fires.
- Yeah.
Firefighters call that a Class C,
which, in the original history,
is what killed Captain Burton
and four construction workers
on the 21st floor.
That's why you're here.
You have to get yourself
and them out fast.
- Got it.
- Who are you talking to?
Uh, I-I-I'm just talking to my chief.
All responding units,
this is Chief Garcia.

All right, we got
a potential IDLH up on 20.
Set your radios to fireground.
Keep your ears open.
We'll start evac of tenants
from the upper floors
before this thing spreads.
Okay, everyone,
we need to move as calmly
and as quickly as possible.
Right this way.
The blown transformer
triggers a series of explosions
on the top ten floors
on the east side of the building.
So tell the firefighters
to use the west stairwell
for their operations.
Chief, we have a Class C up on 20.
The east side of the building
is gonna be a no-go
once things start heating up.
- Aren't you still on 28?
- Yeah.
So how do you know
what's happening on 20?
20 years of experience?
Can't argue with that.
Sending a team up now
for a direct attack
before this gets out of hand.
Hope you don't mind
flying solo on evac now.
Already on it.
You two have to go now.
- What about you?
I have to evacuate some other people,
but I can't until I know you're safe.
We better do as the captain says.
Come on.
Wait.
We can't leave yet.
What about Dad's stuff?
Ben, it's not safe.
Hannah, it's not safe.
Sweetie, it'll be fine.
No, I'm not gonna leave without
- Jeffrey, we have to go.
- Why?
So you can let it burn
and forget about Dad?
As soon as I can, I'll get
your dad's stuff, okay?
Fine.
Follow me.
How do you know my mom's name?
You've said it before. Twice, actually.
I, uh
Well, this isn't our first visit
from the fire department.
Remember when Mrs. Solomon
left her oven on?
Called it, Cap.
Definitely a Class C fire.
Garcia's got half the battalion
checking other floors
to make sure it hasn't spread.
How come the sprinklers didn't come on?
They're tied to the electrical panel.
Whatever triggered the explosion
must have overloaded the breakers.
Probably those construction
workers up on 21.
You know about them?
Well, the whole building
knows about them.
They keep blowing the power.
I bet that's what fried my board.
Whoever built this place
did a real crappy job.
Ben, you need to get to that crew
before the next explosion.
I need to do a quick sweep upstairs.
- Can you get them out?
- Yes, sir.
If you folks will stay with me.
You know, we've called for backup,
but we're just spread so thin tonight.
But it's going to be okay.
Ben. Ben, wait.
I know where the workers are.
I can take you to them.
No, no, you should be running
from the danger, not to it.
Besides, you're not a firefighter.
Neither are you.
Ben, every time our paths have crossed,
it's because you needed my help.
What makes this leap any different?
She has a point, Ben.
Addison agrees with me, doesn't she?
Look, Jeffrey's safe,
and all my instincts
are telling me I'm supposed to be here.
Please trust me.

Don't leave my side.

So, um, let's say it's on my authority.
Because from now on,
I'm in charge of Quantum Leap.
[TENSE MUSIC]

Hey, just FYI, there's this
movie about a burning building
that's coming out later this year
that might be a little triggering.
[CHUCKLES] I prefer rom-coms anyway.
But I must admit, that was
one hell of a last hurrah.
Really went out
in a blaze of glory, huh?
Too soon.
Yeah.
[GENTLE MUSIC]
I know what you two went through today
must have been hellish.
But maybe it's the start
of a healing process.
I hope so.
Any idea what you'll do next?
Start over.
I have a job offer out in California.
I think I'm gonna take that.
Before, you said you understood
why the accelerator brought
us together here and now.
In our brief time together,
you have changed my whole world.
The doors you opened,
the adventures we shared,
impossible experiences
I never would have had
if you hadn't walked into that diner
all those years ago.
It was the greatest gift.
And I wanted to give you
something in return.
Today I realized how
to make that a reality.
Make what a reality?
I've been working
on a quantum code for DARPA,
a code that will get you home, Ben

Where you belong.
Ben?
Who's Ben?
[GROANS]
How did I get here?
Easy, Captain, you've hit your head
and lost consciousness.
Let's get you some help.
As you've all probably heard,
Quantum Leap is undergoing
significant restructuring.
Gideon Rydge is your
new project director.
You can call the Pentagon,
and they'll fill you in
on all the details,
but first I'm gonna need you
to turn over your access badges
and exit the premises.
Your positions have been terminated.
- You can't do that.
- [LAUGHS]
If I had a nickel for every
time I'd heard that phrase,
- I'd be a billionaire again.
- Gideon, please.
Look, I know that you're angry,
but we finally have
a swap code that can bring Ben back,
so if you just give me
a moment to activate it
You're fired, Ian.
You should have played ball sooner.
[TENSE MUSIC]

Addison.
Ben is still out there,
and I am not going to leave him behind.
Impressive, but I have my own team,
and we will take good care of Dr. Song.
But for your own safety, you
need to turn over your badge
and walk away.
Or what?
You gonna shoot us?
Addison, come on.

I wish you all the very best.
