Walker (2021) s02e12 Episode Script
Common Ground
Yesterday, as families watched
Jojo's comet pass above Austin skies,
tragedy loomed just below.
Local rancher, Marv Davidson, appears to have burned alive in his own barn late last night.
While authorities have not yet identified the cause of the blaze, we were able to speak with Mrs.
Davidson to recount the details of the gruesome scene.
It figures that he would, uh, he would run into a-a burning building, you know, to protect those kids.
He was He was always sacrificing.
The weight of the accident on your daughter must've been Oh, it it was, uh, - it was no accident.
- I'm I'm sorry? Um I shouldn't have said anything.
If someone is at fault here, I think people have a right to know.
I believe it it was, it was the kid next door who started this fire.
I mean, his family's always been after mine.
He's responsible.
Cordell Walker murdered my husband.
Cordell Walker What are you doing? I had never seen that.
Mom and Dad asked me to never watch it, and I guess part of me never wanted to watch it.
- Yeah, for good reason.
- Yeah.
Why would you even go looking for that? I couldn't sleep.
You know, I got to thinking about the last time Davidsons had to move.
It's not your fault.
Yeah, yeah, no, I I, uh Okay.
I got to get a ride in.
Daddy's waiting.
He's gonna be really happy.
Listen, I want to cut a deal with the Davidsons after the race.
I need you to take a look at the proposal.
Please.
You know what's crazy about this whole thing? I went to law school, I worked at the best firm in Manhattan, I was almost district attorney, and all of this will be decided - by a horse race.
- Okay.
All right, hot shot.
You'll be fine, okay? It's me racing.
You know I'm gonna win.
Our land's at stake.
I just think that we should try and cut a deal - before the race, not after.
- No.
I don't want the Davidsons thinking we're scared of a challenge.
We are going to race tomorrow.
We have to, but we don't have to start a war.
Please.
All right.
Okay, I think I think it's over.
Oh, thank you.
You bought the wrong cleaner at the store.
I bought cleaner that doesn't clean? Yeah.
Do you have any idea how much you embarrassed me yesterday? Drunk in front of the new Ranger.
I'm sorry.
I know I said it a million times, but I'm sorry.
Yeah, and it's completely lost its meaning.
We cannot keep doing this, Dan.
We cannot.
I am so sick of being the monster and just repeating myself all the time.
It is not fair.
It's not fair to me.
It's not fair to Cole.
You got to go.
You got to just go before I get home from work.
Just stop dragging this out.
Denise, I got nowhere else to go.
Well, you always seem to figure something out.
Cleaner? Seriously? Please, Mom, you and Dad invented that fight, okay? Honey, he knows about the race.
How? We can't lose him, okay? - He's our best shot at winning tomorrow.
- Why? Because of some summer job he had - working for a jockey? - Okay, but - Come on.
- He worked with that jockey for five summers.
Do you want the first time back on a horse since college to be racing for this family? If it comes down to it.
Fine.
But, you know what? This race isn't gonna happen if I have anything to do with it.
Now, I got to get to work.
Whoa, whoa.
Right now with everything going on? Mom, I reopened the investigation into Dad's death, and I need solid evidence against the Walkers before this feud makes headlines because you know they're just gonna accuse me of abusing county resources.
What What're you saying? You could lose your job? I would never be able to be D.
A.
again.
Uh, here you go.
Hey.
Do you remember the lantern Cordell brought into our barn, right, the night of the fire? Yeah, we always had lanterns in there.
I'm talking about the one that he brought.
The one that he left when you two were in the hayloft together.
What are you trying to say? - What, he tampered with it? - I Come on.
That's a stretch, Mom.
I mean, he was just a kid, - and they never found that lantern.
- Until a few weeks ago, when the Walkers found it and kept it secret.
Tell me everything you know.
Hey.
Morning.
Sorry, uh Well, there he is.
You having nightmares again? You look God awful.
Oh, that's very sweet.
Thanks, uh Coach.
Uh, I'm here.
I'm ready.
What-what's the play? - All right, well, let me see.
- Let's get to work.
How about if we, um Chopper? I mean, he he's fast as hell, but has he ever raced before? - I mean - Well, not as such, but I'm telling you, it's the best horse I've ever bred.
This rookie'll get you to the finish line first.
Okay, okay.
Great.
Then, uh, I guess Whoa, okay, okay.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
What's what's going on? Just the Okay.
All right, all right.
- Shh - He's protecting himself.
Looks like I'm not the only one who senses something off about you.
Is there something you're not telling me? Okay.
I've been thinking, Dad, maybe we should I think we should cut a deal with the Davidsons tomorrow, after we win.
Cordell, I-I don't want to hear it.
- I've put together a list of terms and conditions.
- Oh They-they-they can at least keep living on their ranch.
Hear me out.
If we extend an olive branch, we can end this stupid family feud once and for all without any more casualties.
Shots have been fired.
Lines have been drawn.
And somehow, the Davidsons are always right there when you turn around.
Now, you've tried to be a peacekeeper for way too damn long now.
Everything is on the line now.
Our land.
- Our legacy.
- I get it.
You focus on that.
I, uh I had a dream about you last night.
Um We were on top of the water tower, the one downtown.
But when I looked out all I could see was fire.
You were screaming, and I was frozen.
Bon and I aren't really talking.
It's the secrets, I guess.
We keep them, for what? For who? And, somehow, there's always something we lose.
All right, you got your back straight, now get your head forward.
Focus where you're going.
- I know how to ride a horse.
- Well, it doesn't look like it.
- Well, he's not going.
- Oh, my Lord.
Whoa.
Easy.
Yippee Ki-yay, cowboy.
Got your horse nip you requested.
Oh, this is my new ranch hand.
- Coach.
- What? Just consider me your new assistant for the day.
- Whatever you need, I'm here.
- Mm.
- Go on! - And if he does anything wrong, I hold him, you slap him.
Well, I'll keep that in mind.
Oh, don't answer.
Don't even think about answering it.
- Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- The hell you thinking, boy? Whoa.
Whoa.
No! Chopper.
It was Denise.
- Could've been about the race.
- Oh, my Lord.
- Great.
- Yeah, right.
It's not me, it's Chopper.
Why don't I just ride a different horse? It has nothing to do with the horse.
I'll show you.
Take one of those sugar cubes, - give it to Chopper.
- Yes, sir.
- Come here, come here.
- Watch her.
Oh, yeah.
Good boy.
Yeah, I think your dad's right.
This horse is pretty much making out with my hand right now.
Really? Y you really took the morning off work for this? Yes, and it was totally worth it.
Okay.
All right.
Fine.
It's not Chopper, it's me.
- I'm in my head.
- Well And my riding is off.
Okay.
You know what? Why don't you go on back to the house.
You're done here.
- What? - Well, you said it yourself.
You can't race.
So, I will.
August.
Hey.
Hey, Mrs.
Davidson.
Um yeah, Colton isn't here right now.
Oh, no, um I've been trying to reach your dad all morning.
Is he here? I haven't heard from him all day.
Well, in that case, would you mind if I asked you a couple questions? Sure.
I mean, do I need a lawyer or something? Like A lantern was stolen off my property a couple weeks ago, and you have been named as a person involved in the incident, so would you have any idea where it could be? Okay, you're really gonna confront a kid like this? I have been trying to find your father.
And catching Augie on his own is pretty low.
We're not the bad guys here.
August, I just need you to answer that one question.
What's going on here? You know what? This doesn't involve you, so just Well, when you're in my place of business, talking to kids who are practically my blood, I would say yeah, mm-hmm, it does concern me.
Okay.
Why don't we find some neutral ground then? How's Ranger HQ? - I don't think that's gonna be necessary.
- Yeah, no, that-that-that's fine.
Let's just, um get this over with.
Great.
Great.
- Augie.
- It's fine.
Okay, I'll go with you.
You know what? You are not his legal guardian, but don't worry, he'll be in good hands.
Let's go.
Augie.
Dad's not picking up.
It's going straight to voice mail.
I told him to come earlier, so maybe he's on his way.
Okay, you stay here in case he does.
- You hold down the fort.
- Wait, where are you going? I'm gonna go find that damn lantern.
This is ridiculous.
He always, he always does this.
He has to, he has to do everything alone.
My God.
The snacks in this house are unreasonably good.
I mean, your mom has, like, three different types of homemade trail mix.
- All right.
- I mean, I am so invested in this race now.
I mean, yes, obviously, I was before Hey.
What? I mean, obviously, I was before, but - now it's personal.
- Oh, what I was saying - Daddy.
- Mm-hmm.
He's being irrational.
Am I right? He doesn't need to agree with me.
I'm not saying that, but he won't even hear me out about cutting a deal with the Davidsons.
I mean, look, he has a point.
The horse thinks you're a fool.
And why would you offer to cut a deal with the Davidsons when they're just trying to take everything from you? - Hey, sorry.
- Hey, Ger.
Why aren't you answering your phone? - My phone, uh, well - Denise just ambushed Augie at the bar.
She took him to Ranger HQ for questioning.
What? For questioning about what? - About the lantern.
- The The lantern? What what lantern? I Denise said that Augie might've taken a lantern from the Davidsons' old barn.
Okay, hold on.
Augie told me he-he went to the barn.
He-he said he hurt his shoulder climbing around.
He he didn't say he he took anything.
What what's what's going on here? Did did you know about this? Okay.
Where is this lantern? Buried it.
That damn thing has caused this family nothing but grief.
It's better off six feet under.
That wasn't your decision to make alone.
Can't you see that all these damn secrets end up hurting us more than anything the Davidsons could ever do to us? I have to ask you this, and I need you to shoot me straight.
Where did you bury that lantern? - Stel.
- Have you heard from Augie? No, your father has it handled.
He never should've taken that stupid thing.
I told him not to, but he just had to show off, and then I know Colton got involved somehow.
Okay, okay, let's-let's get you home.
- Okay? - Mm-hmm.
- Stella.
Don't.
- Hey.
I know our friendship doesn't mean anything to you anymore, but you really didn't have to sell out my brother to your mom.
I'm-I'm sorry, what? And what the hell did we do to make you hate us so much? You're a Walker.
Okay, I'm a Davidson.
I guess this just wasn't meant to be.
You don't mean that.
You, of all people, wouldn't believe that.
But, hey, I guess you weren't really who I thought you were.
How do you want to fight this, kid? - Stella.
- You know, the only thing I wanted when we moved here was a home.
They're taking our ranch tomorrow, and I know, I know you and Mom aren't happy.
There's nothing left to fight for anyways, Dad.
Stel.
Dan.
You came to me when you needed help.
Now, I'm gonna ask the same of you.
Let's cut a deal, okay? 20 acres of the Walkers' land and we call off this race.
- 20 acres? - Yeah.
Let's find some common ground.
Augie, hey, come here.
Come here.
Hey, it's okay.
Hey, why don't you, uh, wait outside for me, okay? - Okay.
- Yeah.
Okay, before you fly off the handle I know things escalated between our families, Denise but you shouldn't have involved my son.
He involved himself the second he trespassed onto my property.
He's 15 years old.
He's a kid.
You remember when we were kids? Like-like, at all? Did you tell your children the significance of this lantern? I'm not answering that question.
Just curious, why would they keep it after they found it? What else is your family hiding? What else is my You know what? Despite everything, Denise, I tried to help you, to help your family, but you involved my child.
You started a war, and there ain't no going back from that.
Then I will see you on the field tomorrow.
So be it.
Oh, uh I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be here, hon.
Liam offered us a portion of land to call off the race.
20 acres.
What did you say? My son doesn't deserve 20 acres.
He deserves the whole damn plot.
You want to race tomorrow.
I want to show Colton that there is still something worth fighting for.
Well, Denise was against this, but she said she'd ride if it came down to it.
No, no, no.
You got to tell her the race got pushed back.
I have to ride.
You know I'm the only one that can win against Walker.
Hmm And how are you so sure? Because, when I do, you're gonna give me the farmhouse, and I'm gonna be right next door to my son.
And knowing that's on the line, I won't lose.
Ah! God.
Idiot.
Well, ain't that nice.
- Abby? - No.
Oh, hey.
What can I do for you, New York? You know, I just, uh just wanted to say goodbye.
Wait, are you bleeding? - Oh, no, no, no, no.
- No, let me see that.
I'm fine, I'm fine.
Okay.
I see where your son gets his stubbornness from.
Right, but as your assistant coach Yeah, well I don't think I called you that.
It's all good.
It was a vibe I got.
Oh.
You don't have to be so hard on yourself for protecting your family.
I would do the same for mine.
Sounds like there's a story there.
Full transparency, I, uh I mean, my old partner's family.
Strong families always have a stray or two.
Yeah, well I'm sorry to pry, but, uh, the biggest land dispute I've ever dealt with was in a game of Monopoly.
So how long has this feud with the Davidsons been building? It was peaceful when Marv and I were younger, but that was a long time ago.
We all mourned him.
It was hard on Abby, given her history, but, hell, when When he died I felt relieved.
I thought the land dispute was gonna be buried with him, but here I am, dealing with it again.
I guess that's why I'm so hell-bent that I know what's best.
Maybe you do.
But don't let complications with another family affect what you have with your own.
Let them in.
- Hey.
- Hey.
Stella blue.
I, uh Mwah.
Brought chili.
Where's your brother? In his room, being emo.
Well, get him down here.
- I'll make some chili dogs.
- Your dumpster dogs, Dad? I don't really think that's gonna help.
Ow.
Can you just sit for a minute? Maybe lose a little blackjack with me? Yeah.
All right, well Challenge accepted.
How long do you think we have before Denise comes after us again? I don't know.
We just have to be careful.
You know, we're-we're not dealing with an ally anymore.
But they think we're the bad guys? Right? No.
There are no bad guys here, Stel, not-not in this situation.
W we're all just trying to do whatever we think is best for our family.
Mm-hmm.
You ready to race tomorrow? Yeah.
Of course I'm ready.
I mean, you know, there's a little-little hiccup but I'm ready.
Chopper hates me.
A horse hates you? Okay, maybe maybe not hates, okay? I wasn't focused, but now I am ready.
And I am ready for you - to hit me.
- Okay.
Oh.
Oh! Look at that.
How? You never win.
I won today.
What can I say? Hi.
I'm gonna go check on Augie.
Okay.
Dad.
You got this.
I'm-I'm not here to ask for your forgiveness.
I I don't even need you to say anything.
I let the Davidsons have more power over me than I care to admit.
But the truth is, back then, I I thought there had to be some different way, a better way.
So, I kept putting it off.
But Marv was He was hell-bent.
He needed that win.
For some damn reason I'll never understand.
So, we set it.
Signed on the dotted line.
And then that fire.
And I couldn't help but feel like I had got what I wanted.
And I don't know how I will ever forgive myself for it.
You've been through hell, Daddy.
More times than once, I know that.
But I don't know, I don't know why you always insist on being so damn stubborn.
I mean, you raised me to walk alongside you, this whole family.
When it comes down to it, you never really let us.
That's why I'm here.
I'm ready to listen to whatever you have to say about this deal.
Deal's off.
Deals are off the table.
All I want now is those damn Davidsons to never come near us again.
Well, in that case Walk alongside me, Cordell.
I'm gonna finish what you started.
Abby.
That's funny, isn't it? The girl you loved and the girl you married.
I just wanted to tell you that history is not gonna repeat itself today.
I'm gonna take back what's ours.
Denise isn't even here.
Dad could've totally let Augie come.
Ah, she'll be here in time.
Yeah, you just wait for the Western showdown music to start.
You know, my dad always dreamed of owning a piece of land like this, and, thanks to you, I kind of got to grow up on one.
I think I should be thanking you.
The reason I know this land more than anybody is because all the time you and I spent trying to hide from your dad.
- Oh, Frank.
- Ah, Frank.
Yeah He always did catch us.
- He always did.
Yeah.
- Always did.
And I never wanted to leave.
You'll never have to.
You two okay? No.
Um, I-I don't need it to be.
It's fine.
Ready to go? Yes, ma'am.
Hey, did you, uh, you talk to Denise? Yeah, I called her earlier.
Told her we were starting late, but - if she finds out we were lying - Well, she will find out.
But it's okay 'cause we're gonna win.
- She can yell at me from the Walker jacuzzi.
- Oh.
Wait, is this 'cause of what I said yesterday, Dad? Like, 'cause that was just a heat of the moment thing.
I don't actually want to steal their home.
What you said was truth, Colt.
Right? Heat of the moment or not.
You know, the way we left things, it wasn't fair to you.
It's just those Davidsons, they makes me so damn angry.
Please, we've all had our fair share of anger.
You seem better now.
Calm.
As the only person here not of Walker or Davidson blood, I will read the rules.
The race will start right here at Walker ranch.
The riders will make their way to the barn in between the two properties and circle back to the starting position to finish the race.
Whoever wins, will have legal claim to both the Walker and Davidson land.
The losing family will need to vacate the premises in the most immediate manner possible.
All right, listen up.
I know we've had some interesting times at the ranch, but it's ours, always has been.
Whether that's eating supper at the dining room table, or playing cards till the fireflies come out.
I love this house.
I love this land.
I always have.
But I never realized how much it was home until yesterday.
It's a part of me.
It's a part of all of us.
So, right now, I'm gonna go out there, and I'm gonna protect our own.
We're not going anywhere.
- Okay.
- Okay.
Now, you know Gale's gonna play dirty.
Just be careful out there.
Yeah, of course.
- Son.
- Dad? Listen, when you get to the fork in the road, you go right.
Okay? Left is quicker, but the trees are overgrown.
Yes, sir.
Cordell.
Um Yeah? You go out there, and you kick his ass.
Dad? Attaboy, Chop.
So much wasted land.
I mean, does anyone really need a treehouse these days? I do think I'm gonna keep your mom's garden.
Looks like she worked real hard on that.
Okay.
Everyone ready? On your marks! Get set! Go! - Come on, Cordi! - Go, Dad! Go, go, go! Come on, boy.
Hyah! Come on.
Come on.
You hurt? I'm fine.
Can you ride? Can you ride? Yeah, yes, I can ride.
All right, then get up.
You didn't have to come back, you know.
Well, I save people for a living, Dan.
It's who I am.
Thank you.
Besides, I want you there to watch me cross the finish line in front of you.
Get on your horse.
Let's finish this.
We go on three.
Three.
- Two.
- One.
Come on, come on, come on! Come on, Chop.
Come on, Chop.
Come on! Come on, Chop! Bonham, Denise is on her way.
I came to warn you.
Looks like y'all started on time after all.
Oh, honey.
I-I-I thought you were against all this.
I'm not here for the race.
We examined that lantern.
Forensics found Daddy's blood all over it.
That lantern didn't just start the fire.
It was a murder weapon.
Dad's death wasn't an accident.
You were right.
Bonham Walker.
You're under arrest for the murder of Marv Davidson.
No cuffs.
He can walk.
I You have the right to remain silent.
Hyah! Hyah! Hyah! Hyah!

Hyah! Hyah! Hyah! Hyah!
