Mission: Impossible (1988) s02e13 Episode Script

The Assassin

We go straight from the Palace of Nations to lunch with Chancellor Bruk, Minister, followed by a press conference at the embassy, and then a reception at the Goethe-Institut.
Good.
I am expected back in Bonn by noon tomorrow.
REPORTER: Minister, will the EEC clarify their position during the talks? The discussions will be informal, but we believe they will be the first step towards a revised agreement that can greatly strengthen the EEC's position trading-wise in the world.
The outlook for the entire community depends entirely upon all member states setting aside their differences respectively on this issue [ musical tune playing .]
[ .]
The program I have designed should answer most of the objections that have held up progress to this date.
[ people screaming .]
[ crowd clamoring .]
[ excited clamoring .]
POLICEMAN: Halt! Stop! Put down your weapon! - Drop it! - Drop that weapon! [ theme music plays .]
They say there's nothing simpler than shooting a sitting duck.
It's not as easy as it looks.
Knock down any four and win a real trophy.
I'm aiming for a prize of a different kind.
Why don't you try that ride over there? MALE VOICE: Good morning, Jim.
During the past year, there has been a succession of high-level assassinations around the world.
In each case, the assassin has been someone placed close to the victim: Adviser, private secretary, government official.
Not one of these assassins has been interrogated The similarities between these events lead us to believe that one sinister force may be behind them all.
If this is so, then the world is now at the mercy of a killing technique with the power to bypass even the tightest security measures now protecting heads of state.
Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to uncover this deadly operation and put an end to it.
As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.
This disc will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
[ rapid beeping .]
[ hissing .]
[ seagulls cawing .]
Do we have the whole ship to ourselves? Yes, for the next three days while it's closed to the public.
PHELPS: Grant's research into the lives of the assassins has come up with this one factor they had in common.
Each of them, at one time or another, has been a patient in this establishment.
It's a private and an exclusive stress clinic.
Also, one of the most popular, with the rich and famous.
Some of the assassinations have happened in front of television news cameras.
I've analyzed all the tapes.
Check this out.
There.
Look at that face in the crowd.
PHELPS: Dr.
Phillip Westerly, owner and operator of the Westerly Stress Clinic.
Why would he go to Geneva to witness a crime? Well, look again.
Here he is at the scene of that killing in Brussels.
And I've got two more.
And I don't believe in coincidence.
No, I don't either.
But before we do anything, we have to be absolutely certain.
And we also have to act fast before another killing takes place.
WESTERLY: Gentlemen.
Welcome to my auction.
Each of you has briefed me individually and in conditions of the utmost security.
None of you knows the others, and I'm sure you prefer it to remain so.
I'll refer to you by number.
And all you need to communicate to me are numbers.
Numbers of dollars.
And, of course, the highest bidder wins my services.
Oh, I do remind you, gentlemen, this is your last opportunity for many months.
Frankly, I'm ready for a well-earned rest.
So let us begin.
Who will make the opening bid? $200,000.
Now, no need, gentlemen, to mention the thousands.
That is understood.
$300.
$350.
$400.
$450.
$550.
Oh, come on, gentlemen, this is not encouraging.
$650.
My last contract was for $1.
2 million.
This is outrageous! Well, so is your particular assignment, number five.
Are you dropping out? $800.
A bargain, and you know it.
One million.
Now we are doing business.
Jim, we're on line now.
PHELPS: Good work.
WESTERLY [ through speaker .]
: Thank you, gentlemen.
Number one has purchased my services for the sum of $1.
5 million.
That will be all for this year.
Grant, I think we've caught Westerly making a contract for his next assassination.
All right.
Do we know who the target is? No, not a clue.
So that means we have to get inside the clinic to find out who the victim is, as well as the assassin.
We know Westerly loves to play the horses.
Max and Shannon are in position at the racetrack.
Nicholas is nearly ready to go in as a reporter for Global Review magazine.
Well, I think I've found another way in here.
Looks like this utility tunnel's connected to the clinic's original sewer system.
Another entrance to the clinic.
That could be useful once we know what we're up against.
Okay.
PHELPS: Westerly's a clever man.
Academic records give him the IQ of a genius.
He won't be easy to fool.
No.
That means that Mr.
Brian Carmody will have to be on his toes.
[ announcer speaks indistinctly over speakers .]
[ crowd shouting, cheering .]
Shannon, Westerly's headed your way.
Right, Jim.
[ announcer speaks indistinctly over speakers .]
Sheik Faroud, good afternoon.
Dr.
Westerly, you have had some good fortune with that filly I sold you last season.
Yeah, but much more by betting on her brother.
Ah, now him you can never buy.
I'm relying on his speed tomorrow.
His last race in America.
And then he follows me home.
Well, the bookmakers will be pleased.
Dr.
Westerly? Patricia Barwing.
Oh, yes.
How do you do, Mrs.
Barwing? Patricia, please.
[ shouting .]
: Come on! Take him wide! Use your whip! [ sighs .]
: That's my husband over there.
Come on! Move it! Come on! That nag was fixed.
John John, this is the doctor that I told you about.
- Phillip Westerly.
- Yeah.
Look, Pat, I need some more money.
Your wife tells me you were almost in the running for the Olympics.
A crack pistol shot, horseman.
Excuse me.
I have a bet to place.
Gambling is just one of his obsessions.
Sometimes I think I should just get rid of him.
I want to see the doctor.
[ shouting .]
: I want to see the doctor! Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- Ah! Get your hands off of me! - Whoa.
Hey! Relax pal.
Take it easy.
This place ought to help people like me.
Yeah, well, that's no answer to your problems, sir.
Give me that! Gi-Give me that! [ shouting .]
: Westerly! Westerly! Westerly! I want to see Westerly! Now, hold him.
I'll phone the Doc.
I want to see Westerly! ORDERLY: He says he's a journalist with Global Review magazine.
He needs treatment pretty bad.
WESTERLY: It could be interesting.
Look after him.
I'll be there shortly.
Mrs.
Barwing, I'm afraid I'll have to skip lunch with your husband today.
Can you stay for a few days? Both of you? Well I don't know if I can persuade him, Doctor.
He owes it to you, Mrs.
Barwing.
I'm an international journalist, and I've been sidelined to Boston.
With a drinking problem.
This new desk editor, Jack Skrinsky, he's impossible to work with.
It's you, Mr.
Carmody.
If I don't straighten out I'm going to be doing celebrity interviews in Boston.
There's nothing wrong with that, Mr.
Carmody.
All kinds of important people come to Boston.
Please please get me back to the International Division where I belong.
Please, you've got to help me.
Everything is going to be all right, Mr.
Carmody.
You're gonna leave here a new man.
You mean that? I promise you.
No, no, please.
No drugs.
No, we don't use drugs here, Mr.
Carmody.
But you're badly debilitated.
Just a course of vitamins.
[ beeping .]
We can get the number from the dial tones.
[ phone line ringing .]
MAN: Hello? Number one.
I have the perfect candidate.
So the lion will roar? On the 22nd, I guarantee it.
Westerly's chosen his assassin.
And he kills tomorrow.
Well, the phone number he dialed was South African.
A mobile phone reported stolen two days ago.
There's just no way to trace that.
- He's making another call.
- [ beeping .]
WOMAN: Global Review magazine.
Editorial Department, please.
- Who are you calling? - Skrinsky.
One moment, please.
Jack Skrinsky.
Yeah, I'd like confirmation that a journalist of yours, Brian Carmody, is now assigned to Boston.
Yeah, what's your interest? Well, he contacted me for an interview, and I haven't heard from him since then.
[ laughs .]
That makes two of us, pal.
I haven't heard from him either and he's three days overdue for his deadline.
Good-bye, Mr.
Skrinsky.
So far so good.
We can't risk contacting Nicholas from the outside anymore.
You and Max better check into the clinic today.
We're on our way, Jim.
[ phone buzzing .]
Yes.
MAN: Doctor, some new patients have arrived, but admitting doesn't have any information on them.
I'll be right down.
I was expecting you, Mrs.
Barwing, but not until tomorrow.
I'm desperate, Doctor.
I talked John into driving over today.
MAX: Hey, come on.
Come on.
Before he lost several thousand more.
Hey, buddy, where's the nearest bar around here? John You'll have to excuse me a private treatment session.
A gifted journalist, but stressed out and having a problem with alcohol.
It goes with the territory, I'm afraid.
Ronald, take the Barwings up to the residential wing.
Thank you, Doctor.
We'll meet later.
RONALD: Follow me, please.
- He was talking about Nicholas.
- Uh-huh.
[ door opens, closes .]
[ Iow humming .]
Mr.
Carmody? Mr.
Carmody! The principle technique behind much of our treatment here, Mr.
Carmody, apart from diet and relaxation is hypnotherapy.
[ Iow humming continues .]
[ pulsing tones play .]
You must see and you must hear.
You must journey down through your mind, beneath your memory, down into your subconscious.
Down into catalepsy, where nothing is feared.
[ Iow static hissing .]
[ rhythmic drums play, lion growling .]
[ snarling .]
[ snarling .]
[ rhythmic drums playing, lion growling .]
Max, someone's coming.
[ rhythmic drums play, lion growling .]
[ snarling roar .]
And the master's word is absolute.
[ pulsing tones play .]
[ tones stop .]
[ gentle jazz melody playing .]
This song will become your entrance to a new self, Mr.
Carmody.
A new dimension of existence.
A very special wristwatch, Mr.
Carmody.
It'll feel like your most valued possession.
You'll guard it with your life.
How are you feeling, Mr.
Carmody? My treatment leaves you wonderfully relaxed, doesn't it? Yes.
Yes, it leaves me wonderfully relaxed.
Oh, you'll sleep deeply tonight.
I'll see that you're not disturbed.
[ sighs .]
- [ beep .]
- Jim, do you read me? Yes, Shannon.
Westerly kept Nicholas isolated during the night.
He's having another private treatment session this morning.
Yes, and I think I know why.
Stick with him.
Right, Jim.
Brian Carmody.
Ah, Patricia Barwing.
How do you do? What's going on up there, Nicholas? Where? In the office.
I don't know what you mean, Shannon.
You don't remember anything? Animal noises? Vaguely.
Well, there was nothing vague about it.
I mean, it sounded like a jungle in there.
Look, all I know is I haven't felt this good in a long time.
Nicholas, where's your watch? Here.
It's new.
Where did you get it? I've had this watch for a long time.
- Well, let me have a look at it.
- No! Look, would you just leave me alone.
NICHOLAS: I'm sorry.
I'll see you later.
Nicholas? Nicholas! Now, look what's going on? What happened in that room? Look we're getting you out of this place.
You're losing it, buddy.
We didn't bargain on this.
Did Westerly give you that watch? Did he? You can tell me, what's going on? Hey.
Come on, what's wrong? Look, we're friends, you and I are friends, and you can tell me whatever is bothering you.
Just talk to me about it, Nicholas, please.
You can tell me what's going on.
I mean, if something's bothering you, - I want to know about it.
- [ lion roaring .]
What's wrong, Nicholas? I know there's something going on in your mind.
Tell me about it.
What is it? [ Max continues indistinctly .]
- Nicholas! - [ both yell .]
[ gasping .]
MAX: Nicholas! SHANNON: Nicholas! Nicholas, whatever he's put in your head, fight against it! MAX: Snap yourself out of it.
Come on.
- Leave me alone! - RONALD: Hey! Hey! Excuse us! Stay clear of our patient, Mr.
Barwing.
Thank you.
Oh SHANNON: Jim.
Yes, Shannon? Whatever Westerly's doing to Nicholas is powerful stuff.
He's behaving like he's been brainwashed.
Nicholas is the chosen assassin, all right.
But, in one day? How is that possible? Simple hypnosis could never do that.
It's gotta be something else.
We're gonna have to get into Westerly's office ourselves.
Shannon We've got company.
After today's incident, I've decided that my treatment is not suitable for Mr.
Barwing.
Now, hold on just a minute.
I can't have sensitive patients upset to the point where they lose control like Mr.
Carmody did.
Now, I'm very sorry, but I must ask you to pack and leave.
Immediately.
So much for your health treatment garbage, Patricia.
I trust that you won't have the nerve to charge me anything.
You save the money for your bookmakers.
See to it that they leave without delay.
RONALD: Sure.
I'll be working with Mr.
Carmody.
Those people you know, Mr.
Carmody, the Barwings, whomever they are, you mustn't let them stand in your way.
I'm certainly not going to let them stand in mine.
I won't let them stand in my way.
Nor anyone else.
Nor anyone else.
[ pulsing tones play .]
[ rhythmic drums play, lion snarling .]
[ snarling .]
SHANNON: Jim, Westerly's taking no chances by having us around.
SHANNON: We've been forced out.
PHELPS: Watch the clinic.
If Nicholas tries to leave there, don't lose him.
We're on the way.
[ gentle jazz melody playing .]
This is your day of destiny, Mr.
Carmody.
We're leaving here now.
You must practice what I've been preaching.
Wake up, Mr.
Carmody.
PHELPS: There's no guarantee that Nicholas is the only assassin Westerly has available.
GRANT: You mean, he might have - a backup killer waiting? - Could be.
Now, tracking Nicholas is the only way we have of reaching the target ourselves in time to stop the killing.
Tools of the trade, Mr.
Carmody.
Jim, he's coming your way.
We'll follow.
This is it.
ANNOUNCER: It's two minutes until post time, folks.
Two minutes to post time.
ANNOUNCER: Your attention, please.
All windows are closed for betting.
Hold on to your tickets, folks.
You have an interested audience.
Why are we here? To meet Sheik Faroud, Mr.
Carmody.
You've been granted the only interview before he flies back home.
You are very fortunate.
ANNOUNCER: Here we go! ANNOUNCER: They're off to a thundering start.
Down the stretch Red Lady, Yellow Angel Let's go.
[ announcer speaks indistinctly over speakers .]
You two look down here.
Shannon, let's try upstairs.
[ crowd shouts excitedly .]
MAN: Nice going, Sheik! Shannon, isn't that Sheik Abdul Faroud? Yes, it is; he's the OPEC leader involved in the Mid-East peace talks.
There's been a couple of attempts on his life.
I'd say there's a long list of people who'd like to see him dead.
And he's the one they call "The Lion of the Desert.
" Max, Grant.
The Arab Sheik near the winner's circle.
He could be the target.
I've got him.
Jim, there's Nicholas.
Behind you.
WOMAN: Hey! - MAN: Hey, watch it.
- WOMAN: Oh! Never could hold his liquor.
ANNOUNCER: Tear up your tickets or cash them in.
[ announcer speaks indistinctly over speakers .]
GRANT: He wasn't wearing a weapon of any kind.
You know, that whole thing could have been a diversion.
There may be someone else.
I'll watch the Sheik.
Max, you keep an eye on Westerly.
You better get him back to the ship.
Right.
ANNOUNCER: Windows are open.
Place your bets, please.
ANNOUNCER: Folks, your attention, please.
The horses are on the paddock.
Post time is in ten minutes.
Post time to the next race - ten minutes - Jim, I've found him.
Keep him in sight.
Grant? Yeah, Jim.
Westerly's still here.
Now may be a good time to get into his treatment room.
Yeah, I got you.
[ announcer speaks indistinctly over speakers .]
[ blower stops .]
Grant? Yeah, Max.
I've lost track of Westerly.
He could be heading your way.
Yeah, thanks.
[ gentle jazz melody playing .]
Nicholas.
Nicholas, stop! Oh, Nicholas don't! No Nicholas! [ grunts .]
PHELPS: Shannon? Nicholas.
PHELPS: What happened? He's still programmed.
Can you stand? He hit me.
He's taken a gun.
[ rhythmic drums play, lion growling .]
Jim? Grant, we've got trouble.
Nicholas overpowered Shannon.
He's gone; armed and dangerous.
The Sheik? No, he's safely on a plane.
I still think he was a decoy.
Well, I found some pretty interesting stuff here, including a tape of a lion killing its prey.
Well, that could account for the jungle noises, but there's got to be more to it than that.
Get back here, fast! Right.
[ rhythmic drums play, lion growling .]
GRANT: This is the secret to Westerly's method.
He implants those in the people he wants to control.
It's some sort of thought-triggering device.
And it can turn an otherwise normal person into a killer.
They seem to be made of living tissue.
Now, computer analysis suggests they're probably fueled by the body's own adrenaline.
You're saying when the job is done, it simply melts into the system? That's right.
Now, I believe that the implants work in conjunction with this, the program that lays all the groundwork.
The hypnotic tape that Westerly's been using on our friend, Nicholas.
Well, they should be able to tell us something.
Well, nothing that I can see with the naked eye.
But there are other ways.
[ rhythmic drums play, lion growling .]
GRANT: The lion and the gazelle.
Hunter and the hunted.
Let's look at that again.
That's it.
Killer and victim.
Subliminal messages.
I'd say he's Nicholas' target.
So, the Sheik was a red herring.
Westerly sent Nicholas after him so that we'd follow and he'd find out who we are.
Now, Nicholas is chasing the real target, this man.
Who is he? SHANNON: Chief Leopold Kombutu, President of the Republic of West Africa, Chairman of the Commission Against Apartheid, the most wanted man on the hit list of South African extremists.
He must be here in Boston.
"Chief Leopold Kombutu "of The Republic of West Africa public ceremony at Boston Zoo, When the lion roars.
We've got a half an hour to stop Nicholas.
CHAUFFEUR: Your Highness.
REPORTER: There he is.
Welcome to Boston Zoo, Chief Kombutu.
Thank you, sir.
REPORTER: One more picture, please.
[ grunts .]
Hey! Citizens of Boston, I give you the President of the Republic of West Africa, Chief Leopold Kombutu! [ applause .]
Mr.
Mayor, citizens of Boston.
I am indeed honored to be here this afternoon.
Here in this historic city where a flame was set alight, inspiring all the colonial people of the world to strive for our own independence, the right to self-determination.
It is fitting that I should be honoring the citizens of Boston, for it was the citizens of Boston who more than 200 years ago, struck the first blow that secured this great nation's independence from England.
My own country won its independence barely 30 years ago.
Now, we find our freedom threatened by racist and aggressive extremists.
Jim.
GRANT: I found the mask making unit.
Nicholas has changed his identity.
He could look like anyone.
KOMBUTU: People of the Republic of West Africa [ muffled shouting .]
KOMBUTU: know only too well that the security and lasting freedom can never be easy for us.
But we will not give way, even as you did not give way.
There will be suffering.
There are sacrifices to be made, but our democracy will emerge victorious.
And, so, from the freedom loving people of the Republic of West Africa, I ask you to accept the gift of this beautiful animal.
A symbol of our everlasting friendship.
Jim! The keeper, there it's Nicholas.
Nicholas.
Nicholas.
Nicholas, put the gun down.
Put the gun down, Nicholas.
[ rhythmic drums play, lion growling .]
[ lion snarling .]
[ snarling .]
[ grunting .]
Grant, get Westerly! Look out, he's got a gun! [ screams, panicked shouts .]
POLICEMAN: Get these people out of here.
Boston Police! Stop! POLICEMAN: Keep your heads down.
Stop! Put down your weapon! POLICEMAN 2: Drop your weapon! [ Westerly yells .]
[ people scream .]
[ lion roars .]
[ grunting .]
No! [ Westerly yelling .]
[ lions roaring, Westerly yells .]
WESTERLY: No, get him off! [ rhythmic drums play, Westerly screams .]
- [ snarling .]
- Stop them! [ Westerly screaming .]
[ screams .]
: No! No! [ Westerly screams .]
[ drums fade .]
[ sighs .]
[ sighs .]
: It's all over.
Nicholas? Have I missed something? Welcome home, Nicholas.
[ theme music playing .]
