Heritage

1 Previously on "Queen Sugar" I just wanted to give Darla a nice wedding.
I think she think I just can't afford it, so she worried.
You breathed new life into something most people had long since forgotten.
This community is fed, and I'm not talking about its belly.
I'm talking about its spirit.
I know I messed up.
Can we fix this? I think you're a very good man.
But you're no good for me.
You want to do good for that woman, sometimes a man takes sacrifice.

Dreams never die Take flight as the world turns Keep the colors in the lines Take flight as the world turns Keep the colors in the lines Take flight Dreams never die keep the colors in the lines Keep the colors in the lines Take flight I want to point your attention to one analysis, in particular.
This is the anti-nuclear antibody test, and, as you can see, you tested positive.
The a.
N.
A.
Test has a 97% correlation rate with lupus.
Considering your symptoms, I think we can safely diagnose you.
Lupus? You've been experiencing what we call "flares.
" Basically, your body thinks there's an illness, and it's defending itself.
But there is no illness, so it's attacking its own healthy organs and tissues.
That's where your joint pain and other challenges are coming from.
This is a chronic illness.
But for many, including you, it can be managed.
Violet? Violet I'm here for you through this.
Okay? [DOOR OPENS.]
Well, you done good, ma'am, real good.
Folks are saying they had so much fun at the festival, we should do it every year.
As long as you help me again.
Oh, of course.
We make a pretty good team.
I was thinking, if you don't have plans, we should celebrate and do dinner out.
Or we can stay in.
And, possibly, dessert afterwards.
- Dessert? - mm-hmm.
Really? What'd you have in mind? Don't know yet.
But I'm getting there, slowly but surely.
I'm glad.
And I-I understand.
It's just been a minute.
Not since shauna.
So I just needed to wrap my head around it.
I respect that.
But you are who I want.
Know that.

That was the problem.
Mm! I was the one that wasn't clear.
I started losing myself, you know.
Mm, yeah.
I know how that is, girl.
Doing things, saying things Wearing things that weren't me.
It was the me he wanted me to be.
Well you woke up before most people do, before you were consumed.
And for that, give yourself some credit, okay? I've been told a few truths before for one, I was never fair to you you okay? Never fair, no but now you will and I wanna tell you "I love you" whatever you chose to do but every now and then I want to run back to yo-o-u every now and then I just might lose my mind [SOFTLY.]

[SIGHS.]
Nice job, Ralph.
Thanks.
This mean you can quit the seafood plant? [SIGHING.]

I still want that pay stub for parole.
But With this extra money, we could have our wedding, a nice one.
What you think about that, huh? Come on.
Oh, you laughing at pops? [SHOUTING INDISTINCTLY.]
Laughing at pops.
What you laughing at? All right.

You got some moves on you now.
I don't think you gonna need that, buddy.
But I want them to like me.
How come they've never come before? They got they reasons.
Don't worry.
Nobody gonna not like you.
What do I call them? I've never had a grandma before.
But I had a papa.
That's still papa's name Even though he's in heaven.
How about granddad? Gramps? Papa? G-dad? Mnm.
I got it.
What about g-dawg? - [CHUCKLES.]
- g-whiz? - I'll just round 'em off.
- [LAUGHS.]
Won't let me catch a break.
How about Grandpa? That sound like a classic to me.
[GROANS.]
I knew that was coming.
[ENGINE TURNS OFF.]
[SIGHS.]
[CAR DOOR CLOSES.]
Hi, dad.
Hi, Darla.
Mom, dad, this is my fiance, Ralph Angel Bordelon.
Very nice to meet you, Mr.
and Mrs.
Sutton.
- Pleased to meet you.
- Pleasure is mine.
Please call us Darlene and Quincy.
- Yes, ma'am.
- And this This is Blue.
I know you've never met me, but may I have a big hug? Sure.
aww.
Come on inside.
Watch your step.
Thank you, Lord, for this food brought before us, our family growing around us and all the love in between us.
In Jesus' name, amen.
ALL: amen.
All right.
WOMAN: this part of Louisiana is so beautiful.
[LIGHT LAUGHTER.]
I admit, the times I've been here, I haven't gotten past Riverfront, the French Quarter, or the University when we brought you down here.
It's pretty country.
Potty time.
Excuse me.
[ALL CHUCKLE.]
Hey, don't take too long, blue.
So I saw you on "the Larkin Gray show," and I must say, you were quite impressive.
You really should have your own show.
That's very kind.
I can't see that path for myself.
That's a shame because you really are very impressive on the air, and you, running a top-notch sports management firm and then segueing into being the only black woman to own a sugar mill in the United States of America.
You two, both of you young ladies, very impressive.
We're so, so very proud of you.
Thank you.
I really couldn't do it without Darla's help.
She has been Invaluable.
Yes.
I'm sure that Darla can learn a lot from both of you.
Well, Darla could teach a lot, too.
She damn near rebuilt her whole life from the ground up.
Of course she has.
And I look forward to hearing all about it.
I'd love that.
Blue can spend the night at my house tonight so you don't have to rush in the morning.
Thank you.
There you go, Quincy.
Thank you, baby.
I want my rock pajamas, please.
And for school tomorrow? Shark shirt.
How about dinosaur? Okay.
Really just wanted something with teeth.
[CHUCKLES.]
okay.
Go get your toothbrush.
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
He's so precious.
An angel, really.
Do you think the things that happened have taken a toll on him? Darla Is a good mother now.
She loves him to the moon.
He loves her to the stars.
Of course, [INHALES DEEPLY.]
There are things that happened that we both won't forget.
But All I can tell you is that he's a happy child, and he grew up with a lot of love.
[SIGHS.]
I'm so relieved to hear that.
Thank you For all you've done for blue.
Baby, I was blessed by it.
And your monthly checks, they helped.
It was all I could do for him All I could muster.
Well, it meant something.
I'm so sorry For all I missed, all the time I missed With both of them.
But we here now.
We are.
We're all here.
[SIGHS.]
- [SIGHS.]
- [KNOCKS ON DOOR.]
Hey.
Hey.
Wanted to see if you could talk.
Mama tried to tell me tell me you're no good for me yeah but I was fixed on you I was fixed on you I was focused yeah [SIGHS.]
I thought I was okay.
I was moving on.
Then I saw you.
Hard feelings stick.
For what it's worth, I know I haven't [VOICE BREAKING.]
Moved on.
I tried.
In lot of ways, I shouldn't have.
And I'm just realizing I've been at war with myself.
Me, too.
But why why are we fighting This, ourselves, each other? What do we have to do to find the peace together? Whatever it is, say it And I'll do it.
Whatever you say, I'll do.
[KNOCKS ON DOOR.]
[DOOR CLOSES.]
Say it in the dark - say it - Damn.
Call me yours take it all take it all, ooh in the dark you're so beautiful.
I could look at you forever.
I believe in forever.
And I want you in mine.
In the dark you okay? I realized that we haven't Really talked about things.
Should we? I'm not sure that we're on the same page.
I was just telling you how I feel.
You said "forever.
" Is that, um Is that literal? I guess I was just thinking out loud.
Oh, good.
Oh, okay.
Uh so, like, like, pillow talk.
Okay.
sorry.
- Good.
- No.
Wow.
You seem a little too relieved.
I guess I am a A little.
You don't see a future for us? I just want to be with you Wait.
Would you marry again? Uh [CHUCKLES.]
I'm barely out of my last marriage.
I think it's a little premature to be thinking about another.
It's it's just not on my mind.
How 'bout a family? You mean a family as in children, like having children? Yeah, like having children.
I think about it a lot.
I've always wanted kids.
Life got in the way of that.
I hadn't thought about having another child.
Say it it's too hard call me yours take it or leave it is it something you could think about? Remy I'm not sure I want to.
I promised myself, if I ever had another chance, I wouldn't let you go, not until you knew how I felt about you.
I know.
I don't think you do.
I felt like a fraud my whole life.
I didn't care much about sports, but I played because my Daddy wanted me to.
Didn't want to join the force, but I did because my family expected me to.
I didn't want to get married But I did Because everyone thought I should.
I didn't want kids, but she did, so we had kids.
I did, my whole life, what everybody else wanted me to do until you.
Being with you, it was the first time I was able to be me.
You are my choice.
[INHALES DEEPLY.]
You're so free.
You are so You're so brave.
And just being around you made me want to be brave, too.
I love you.
I love you so much, more than anything or anyone.
I love you, too.
Hear me.
[SIGHS.]
no.
For you, I'm freedom.
For me you're prison.
What happened at that bar was horrible.
It was beyond horrible.
I took care of him.
I made him pay for what he did.
I did everything I could.
You know that.
I don't care about that night.
I'm talking everything.
What is everything? I'm a prison? How can you look at me and say that? I can't be all of myself when I'm with you.
I can't.
I can't fight for my people every day and come home And have to explain it.
I can't cry over a brother slayed by cops in the streets and no one ever pays And then come home to a cop.
Come on.
This is crazy.
I was going crazy.
I can't want to share everything with you knowing there are parts of me you really don't want to know the part of me that loves my people more than anything that will make me set that aside.
I never asked you to set it aside.
You never asked about it at all.
And just because you wish something is meant to be doesn't mean it is.
Once in a while there's something that wakes me up abrades me in my skin every now and again I tangle up instead every now and again and the black and gray is fading out in front of me it seems you've really taken to this community, made it your home.
Right now, I need what's here Stability And family.
You say that as if we aren't still your family.
I don't know where I stand with everyone.
Well, until last week, we didn't know where we stood with you.
Respectfully, mom I have written to you for years.
I have called, no response.
I've been very clear with where I've stood.
No, Darla.
If you had clarity, you would know that just because you say the words doesn't make it true.
You've said, "I'm clean," or, "please help me," or, "I love you," before, but then you haven't been clean, or you haven't accepted our help, or you haven't respected our love.
So don't act as if we done you wrong, please.
You're right.
I'm not trying to scold you, but don't act as though we've shunned you.
I can only imagine what you've told them.
But if it's anything to that effect, I'd be very disappointed.
It's how it felt.
Do you know how it felt for us? Our daughter calling us, high, and asking for money? Or high, screaming in pain? Or high, threatening to harm herself, and we are all the way across the country, scared out of our minds? And we come for you, but you're not there.
And you say you're coming home, but you don't come.
You tell us to leave you alone and then you call, and you demand money.
You almost broke us.
Eventually, we had to create some distance for our own sanity, for our own health.
And your father [SIGHS HEAVILY.]
What about dad? Let's just say he had a very Very hard time [VOICE BREAKING.]
Very hard.
[SIGHS.]
I want to take responsibility for what I've done for what I've put you through.
[VOICE BREAKING.]
I know I broke your heart.
And now that I'm a mother, [SIGHS.]
I can feel your heart break.
Please let me make amends.
I am sorry.
Please believe me.
Please forgive me.
I'm clean.
I forgive you.
And I believe you.
[SNIFFLES.]
okay? When you make amends to everyone you've touched, you can truly be free.
I want you to feel free.
We're gonna be all right.
I missed you.
I missed you, too.
I'm so happy you're here.
I know you are.
You ever think about Karma? Enough to try avoiding the bad kind.
I don't know what kind of Karma I have.
Or what kind of future you'll have if you're with me.
I'm okay not knowing I think.
Plus, we have enough time to figure it out.
There's no rush.
To us.
I'm moving forward now.
That's The way that I can make amends to you.
And I'm working my steps Every day.
I'm a good person.
And a good mother.
[SIGHS.]
I'm gonna be a good wife.
I know that you will be.
Start your marriage on solid ground Trust, honesty.
I think that Ralph angel would understand if you tell him the truth.
You need to make amends to him, don't you? [VEHICLE APPROACHING.]
Ralph Angel.
My God, I love you so much.
Please don't hate me.
I hate myself enough already for this.
Darla Please.
Darla, you're scaring me.
[SIGHS.]
[WHISPERS.]
God, please help me.
Darla [SIGHS.]
When we First got together, I went back to D.
C.
one time.
And I got high with my friends worse than I ever have before.
Harder stuff.
And I slept with someone.
Didn't know who.
[EXHALES SHAKILY.]
It was a party with my girlfriends from high school.
Blue [SIGHS.]
[SOFTLY.]
nah.
[VOICE BREAKING.]
He might Not be yours.
Ralph Angel, I'm sorry.
Blue Strangers in shade each blowing away haunting reflections truth where is your pain will my soul ever be found show me a sign point me in the way before I sink gone with the waves the sun was so bright it covered my face and now all I see is ashes and Grace
