Shades of Blue (2016) s02e13 Episode Script

Broken Dolls

1 Previously on Shades of Blue.
I'll do anything for Julia Tom Vecro, internal affairs.
Keep up to good work.
- I saw the feds at the dock.
- Feds.
I gona make sure they dont get you.
Sorry Dad.
Don't find yourself at Wozniak house tonight.
You better not miss.
Say something nice at his funeral.
.
The assassination attempt, it was staged.
She knew it was gonna happen and the shooting at my house.
it puts my son in a hospital.
I killed Miguel He threatened me, to frame Christina.
and I snaped his neck.
Stahl was carry on pimpering Miguel.
I brought some more.
My best friend was killed because of me.
If you though I was watching you before, you are not going to believe how close I'm going to get now.
Robert, your badge.
Sick cause is poison you.
It's soon going to heal you.
This is handled, I have your back.
Where did you put his body? where we used to take Christina That place is too good for Miguel.
[laughs.]
[panting.]
[flies buzzing.]
[panting.]
[tapping.]
[flies buzzing.]
[clang.]
[clattering.]
[flies buzzing.]
[retching.]
[flies buzzing.]
[line trilling.]
911, what's your emergency? Yeah, uh, I'd like to report something strange on the old abandoned Greenbelt campsite.
Is it an emergency? I think it's a dead body.
I was hiking, my my dog started barking next to this metal container.
May I ask what is your name, sir? [beep.]
[flies buzzing.]
Do you think Wozniak will get the nod if Ayres becomes Mayor? Nod for what? Police commissioner.
I don't think he has political ambitions.
Mom.
I'll be up in a second.
What's wrong, Cristina? Why aren't you in school? He's dead.
Who's dead? My dad.
You can't know that.
No, Grandma Lorena, um, had to go to the morgue.
But that just means they don't know it's him.
He's a missing person and they found a John Doe that fits - his general description.
- No, no, he, um He had to get surgery when he broke his leg, and there were screws with serial numbers.
When did they find him? When we started this campaign, no one thought we stood a chance.
To those who said Yeah, she always did have a way with words.
Yeah, not the ones you can say on television.
Putting taxpayers' money to good use? Having friends in high places should come with some perks.
She hasn't won yet.
Don't jinx it.
We've had too many distractions lately.
I don't care what happens at City Hall.
The real work gets done by us on the street.
And I am here to say that every vote counts.
So get out and vote.
Hmm.
Your wife, your parents, neighbors, friends [knocking.]
[door slams.]
They found Miguel.
An anonymous hiker early this morning.
What How did they ID him so fast? He had an orthopedic screw.
Must've broke his leg when he was in prison.
[ominous music.]
I wish we burned Miguel in Raul's oven before they turned off the gas.
You dumped him at an abandoned campsite.
It should've been fine.
So they found him or, part of him.
So what? It just means he's dead.
It's not gonna come anywhere near you.
It's away from Saperstein.
Stahl knows.
Stahl suspects.
The lye dissolved any evidence linking you to the body.
Someone else could put it together.
Miguel's mother knew that I threatened him.
Do you think he told her that I paid him off? Listen to me.
You are not on the list of suspects.
Miguel just got out of prison.
He's a career criminal.
Just stay focused, all right? This is not gonna come back to us.
[beeping.]
Hi, I need a team to execute a warrant search.
It's an open homicide involving a police officer.
I should've never entangled you in this mess.
I entangled myself ten years ago.
And I don't regret a single day of it.
- [knocking.]
- I would do Go away! Hey.
Detective Santos, can I please have a conversation with you in the interrogation room? We're in the middle of something.
It was politely phrased, but it wasn't a request.
It never is with you.
You can come with me voluntarily and answer a few questions, or you can both hand over your badges right now.
Refusing an Internal Affairs interview is cause for immediate suspension.
You know that, Lieutenant.
You know what they say about gamblers? It's not the winning they're addicted to.
It's the losing.
I have a few questions for you as well, Lieutenant.
I believe you're both intimately acquainted with the recently deceased Miguel Zepeda.
I know it's been a rough few days for you, but certain evidence has come to my attention that I can't ignore.
Has this man ever assaulted you? Does punching my face in count? In most states.
At what point did Miguel's habit of punching your face in abate? When his habit of boosting cars relocated him.
Right, six-year stretch on a grand theft auto, right back in for a homicide a month after he was released.
- Sad story.
- Yeah.
And a common one.
Lieutenant Wozniak was the investigating officer on that homicide about the time you joined up with the squad.
He's good at what he does.
What's that? Sending the wrong guy up? I'm not confident he did.
When Miguel's conviction was vacated, you and Wozniak - had a big problem.
- How so? Guy spent almost a decade in a cage.
You don't think he comes out with a major axe to grind? That man took a part of me that I will never get back.
Dwelling on it won't accomplish anything, so I decided a long time ago to never let him steal another moment of my life.
You never spoke in person after his exoneration? I had no reason to.
You had one.
[knocking.]
Yeah? We found something.
In the garage? Along with a bag of lye.
Back in a blink.
If you have someplace to be, I can call, and I can cancel for you.
This could take a while.
Well, I was thinking of exercising my civic duty.
While they still let you vote.
- You know, felons.
- I get it.
You do much yard work, Lieutenant? Enough to know when someone's beating around the bush.
[chuckles.]
'Cause we found some tools in your garage so clean you'd think they'd never touched a speck of dirt.
As much as I'd love to sit around here all day and trade We found strands of hair in the drain on your garage floor.
Long, black hair.
Unless it's been down there a real long time, I think it's a safe bet they're not yours.
My dog has a great head of hair.
Oh, right, right, well, I guess we'll know soon enough.
I mean, it's being analyzed right now.
Quick search warrant.
Good for you.
Eh, just exercising my civic duty.
The other night, when Bianchi had gunmen hose down Wozniak's house, you heroically drove his son to the hospital, yes? I mean, I slammed my foot on the pedal and made a few sharp turns.
I don't know how heroic that is.
Officers at the hospital discovered a shovel and a tarp in your trunk.
Like I told them, I chip in at the Brooklyn Community Garden.
One of three things are gonna happen right now: You go down, Wozniak goes down, or you both go down.
It's in your hands.
You forgot option four.
You keep running laps between us, and we give you nothing.
All your years grinding suspects into confessions How many times did option four happen? [door slams.]
Detective Loman.
What's all this? Verco and his goons are sweating Woz and Harlee about something.
Something we need to worry about? I don't know, but Linda called.
Said IA just ransacked their garage.
Thanks, see you tomorrow.
Field awareness 101, not paying attention to your surroundings can lead to trouble.
Not as much as violating the conditions of your suspension.
I'm just doing a little shopping.
How's my Julia Ayres investigation coming along? It's not your investigation anymore, Robert.
You know that.
Taking down the next Mayor-Elect of New York City, a big bust like that can put a woman on the short list for Assistant Director.
You were the one who stalked Harlee's teenage daughter.
You can't come back from that.
Unless it became clear that my actions were about exposing Harlee for who she truly is, and that she manipulated this whole situation to stop me from doing it.
I gotta go.
A woman's capable of murder, she's capable of just about anything, wouldn't you say? It turns out Harlee is a pretty scary ex-girlfriend.
I know everything, Harlee.
I know Miguel came to you angry, making demands.
You knew he wouldn't leave you alone, or your daughter.
We'd do anything for our kids.
Sure Like cook dinner.
So if you don't have any more questions All I have our questions.
Questions seem to follow you everywhere you go, Detective.
I have questions about Bianchi's abrupt ending.
I left them unanswered.
He took a shot at cops, after all.
And tried to kill an ADA.
Self-defense.
From one human being to another, I think you could claim the same thing too.
Self-defense, justifiable homicide, but know that I have iron-clad forensics linking Wozniak to that body.
If I don't hear the truth straight from your mouth, he's facing an obstruction charge.
Well You're free to go.
As soon as you confirm Harlee's story.
I have four detectives who can testify that I've cooperated with you for three hours.
I'm going home.
If you wanna waste more of my time, schedule a circle jerk with my union rep.
Give me a minute, Lieutenant.
Miguel came at Harlee.
She defended herself.
Should've called 911.
Instead, she panicked and hid the body.
When she thought it was safe, she moved the remains and used lye to accelerate nature.
You wanted to help after the fact.
She refused.
I'm not exactly buying the last part, but, you know, I'll take it with the rest.
Swing and a miss.
Nice playing with you.
If you confirm that Harlee borrowed your tools, I will speak to the DA about mitigating circumstances.
Manslaughter at worst, she's looking at maybe a dime, less with good behavior.
The offer ends the moment you step out of that door, Lieutenant.
Of course it does.
'Cause that's the moment your bluff collapses.
That campsite where they found what's left of Miguel.
Harlee said you used to take Cristina there when she was little to look at the stars.
What can I tell you? The lady finally cracked.
The pressure of the last few days.
Can you blame her? Do yourself a favor.
When I crack, run.
Hey.
You cleaned the tools you used at your house? Cleaning out the drain must've slipped my mind once my son was shot.
Verco said you cracked.
[chuckles.]
What a coincidence.
He told me you did.
You didn't say anything to him? Zero.
- [exhales.]
- What? He knew the spot that I dumped Miguel was where we went camping with Cristina.
I In my apartment Stahl.
He must have ears in my house.
He's our anonymous hiker and sent the care package to Verco.
Pasty-ass son of a bitch.
He's gotta go down.
I still need to weigh in on this election.
Have you talked to Julia at all since Hey, just focus on Stahl.
You'll have to draw him in close.
We're gonna get through this.
I promise.
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine I keep my eyes wide open all the time I keep the ends out For the tie that binds Because you're mine I walk the line This is Robert Stahl.
Leave a message.
[beep.]
I'm ready to give you what you want.
I really don't know where this road leads, but I can promise you one thing.
[chuckling.]
I will never forget the people who were with me from the beginning.
You're the reason that I'm here, and I am I am truly grateful.
So enjoy yourselves tonight, but not too much because, hopefully, we're gonna have a lot of work to do starting tomorrow morning.
[applause.]
[The 1975's "The Sound" playing.]
Hey.
I'm glad you're here.
I was afraid this party would be boring.
We need to talk alone.
Julia, WMBC and the "Post" want five minutes.
- Can it wait? - No.
Oh, baby, won't you come again? You know, I got into this race to bring up the issues all the stuff we used to talk about during those endless stakeouts.
And now Here we are.
No thanks.
Wow, that's gotta be a first.
[faint sirens.]
You know, there are several hundred people out there throwing a party for me, so what are we doing in here? Bianchi said that there's more to the story behind the shooting.
He died.
I didn't get a chance to hear it.
God, he was just messing with your head.
There's nothing that I'm missing? Bianchi got what he deserved.
Now come on, let's go out and eat those canapés I paid way too much for.
[beep.]
Wozniak lives by a code.
If you violate his home, his family, he'll come after you.
- Are you saying - I am saying you better not miss.
Tell me what I'm missing, Julia? That isn't what it sounds like.
- Don't.
- Listen, I had to appease Bianchi, I had to.
It was only meant to scare you off.
Nobody was supposed to - get hurt, nobody.
- You lie again, it's gonna be the last thing that you say to me.
I had to protect myself.
You were gonna let the Feds take me down.
You did this.
You, not me.
You should've come to me in the beginning.
We could've found a way out together.
I was doing everything I could.
I was risking everything.
But you couldn't save both of us, could you? Harlee wouldn't let it go.
I mean, come on, Matt.
I always knew it was gonna come down to her or me.
She didn't make you do this.
And somehow I knew it would end up being her.
I would rather die than betray you.
I trusted you.
I loved you.
You still do.
You still do.
Even if you don't know why.
This can stay between us.
It's the best for everyone.
For you, for Nate.
We have all made mistakes.
You know mine.
I know yours.
But we can all walk away from this.
It's tempting.
It really is.
It's the best way to go, Matt.
It's the easy way.
Late-breaking story on this election night.
Recordings have surfaced between mayoral candidate Julia Ayres and the recently deceased mafia boss Michael Bianchi.
"New York Ledger" reporter Nate Wozniak broke the story.
It alleges Julia Ayres worked with Bianchi to stage her own assassination attempt and to plan the attempted murder of NYPD officers.
I guess Nate didn't trust you not to lose your nerve.
No, I didn't trust myself.
I gave Nate the nod.
Between the two of us, he's much braver than I.
Why? Why didn't you just kill me? Why? - I don't know.
- Yes, you do.
[groans.]
[faint sirens.]
Julia, don't! I didn't I didn't know.
I didn't know that Nate - was gonna be there.
- There's other ways, stop! If I had known any of it You can make a deal - with the Feds, okay? - Oh, no, I can't live - in a cage, Matt.
- Yes, you can, you can survive.
No, I've survived too much already.
I'm so tired of surviving.
I'm so tired.
[knocking.]
Councilwoman? Don't make me face them.
Please, don't make me face them.
[knocking.]
- Julia, we have a problem.
- Please, Matt.
Please.
Please, forgive me.
[knocking.]
Please, Matt.
- [knocking.]
- Councilwoman? Please.
[knocking.]
- Julia? - [knocking.]
The votes have been cast and counted.
Julia Ayres has been elected mayor.
I'm the Mayor of New York.
[gunshot.]
[thud.]
[solemn music.]
[camera shutter clicks.]
[camera shutter clicking.]
[muffled voices.]
Lieutenant? Matt? I tried to stop her.
She was too far away.
They waited to pronounce at the hospital.
The chief is headed there now to release the news officially.
Julia's dead.
After hearing that tape, I suppose there was only one real likely outcome.
Teardrop on the fire Of a confession Fearless on my breath [knocking.]
I wasn't sure you were going to come.
Well, you and a cryptic invitation.
Tough combination to resist.
Oh, I thought I was pretty clear.
"Give me what I want.
" Longer list than you might imagine.
You and I both know what's at the top.
Oh, you must be in a bad way to make that offer.
Well, you should know.
You seem to have ears everywhere.
How did you hack into my Wi-Fi? Cristina? I know that you have to be vigilant with home networks these days.
There's all kinds of malware out there.
Well, server's down now.
No keepsake recordings tonight.
I sent an email to myself, Harlee.
It said that I was meeting you here time, date, and location, just in case you were planning on solving this problem the same way you solved Miguel.
This isn't about payback, okay? No gun.
This is about me asking you to make it go away.
This is what you wanted.
If it isn't, why hold onto the silver bullet? You must have a recording of everything Wozniak and I said here last night.
That's enough to put me away for a very long time.
But you didn't use it, 'cause you don't want me to go away.
You want me right here in front of you, needing you.
If you want something from me, Harlee, then say what you mean.
I'm gonna go to prison for killing Miguel, but we both know you can stop that from happening.
How exactly would I do that? Help me put the body on someone else.
[thud.]
[faint sirens.]
And it's just that easy for you, huh? Frame someone else for murder.
Ruin another life.
His life is already ruined, like mine, so none of it matters.
"His"? So you've already got - someone in mind then? - Caddie.
I don't know if you shot him up intentionally, or you gave him the drugs to do it himself, but you and I both know that his death is on you.
That's how you found Saperstein's grave.
Caddie's death falls at the feet of his own addiction.
Well, that's not a denial.
[faint sirens.]
Just walking through the door gave me the creeps.
Yeah, be careful not to touch any surfaces, especially if there's a picture of Harlee nearby.
This laptop is full of 'em.
This FBI guy has a real stalker vibe.
Framing a man for murder requires evidence.
I've got that covered.
After I found Caddie's body, I searched his place.
For any dirt that might come back on you.
You're always looking out for number one, aren't you? Says the guy who killed Caddie to gain control over me.
He still had the boots that he wore to the cemetery.
The chisel that made dental identification impossible.
Caddie was there for me, and if he could help me right now, he would.
So where's this evidence? I assume you want me to place it somewhere it can be found, transfer any suspicion away from you.
That's exactly what needs to happen.
Video file deleted.
Let's get out of here, man.
I get? Whatever you want.
I know that you hate me just as much as you want me.
That's why you dimed me out to Verco.
So I would need you to save me.
[sighs.]
Maybe I just decided it was finally time you paid for all the things you've done, Harlee.
It's a long list of desperate acts.
If it keeps our little secret between us, I'm willing to add to it.
Once you go down this road, Harlee, there's no stopping.
Be sure.
I've made my choice.
This is surrender.
[grunting.]
You forget how well I know you, Harlee.
[exclaims.]
[yells.]
[grunting.]
[clack.]
I accept your surrender.
The NYPD has confirmed that Mayor-Elect Ayres was declared dead at New York Presbyterian Hospital with what's been reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Earlier tonight, the "New York Ledger" broke the news of a secret recording between Ayres and the recently deceased head of the Bianchi crime family.
Oh, my God, Woz, what happened? Did Julia really kill herself? Were you there? I just drove past her block.
Harlee's light is still on.
Yeah, she hasn't contacted us.
Well, how long does it take to make a guy pass out? She's not answering her phone.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, we can't just storm in.
Look, if Stahl makes us, this whole thing's a bust.
That's why we parked out of sight.
Who said anything about storming in? [thud.]
Harlee? Harlee? She didn't get his fingerprints on it.
We don't have anything to plant at the crime scene.
Nothing for the campsite.
This is the only scene I'm concerned about.
Clothes are missing.
I was wondering when you were gonna come out of it.
You okay? You feel sick? I'll get you some water.
What did you do to me? Your clothes got a little dirty when I moved you.
I would never take advantage like that.
And you've always looked great in black.
They're gonna come looking for me.
Come on.
Harlee, take it.
Drugs dehydrate you.
Harlee, you were the one with the loaded syringe.
Not me.
I just followed your lead.
Now come on, you gotta drink.
There we go.
Good girl.
- [clears throat.]
- Good.
- [coughs.]
- Good girl.
Where are we? It's nice, right? The owner bought this as an investment property.
Mostly vacation rentals now.
I'll tell you, when the season's over, this place is so quiet and solitary.
Wozniak knew I was meeting you.
Harlee, you had a lot of heat coming down on you from Internal Affairs.
Pending DNA results, it was just a matter of time.
I think Wozniak will understand why you ran.
And left my daughter behind? I know, I know that was hard, but it's better that she's abandoned than living some life on the run.
Right now, she has a chance at a good life, and I think that's noble, Harlee.
That's a noble sacrifice.
I admire that.
That's the kind of loving mother I always knew you were.
Espada's back at the precinct scanning through traffic cam footage.
He'll let us know when he's got a hit.
There's a city-wide APB out on her car.
State Police and Highway Patrol are on the lookout as well.
It's been hours.
They could be anywhere.
- Packed her clothes, car's gone - But Woz, she would never run.
- She would never do that.
- He's trying to make it look like she did.
I mean, he needs a place that's remote.
So he's thinking on the fly, so he's probably gonna want something that's familiar to him.
So we'll pull his financials, and we'll see if he has any real estate nearby.
What makes you so sure he he took her somewhere? 'Cause I don't think he wants to kill her.
He wants her all for himself first.
Hey, everybody, did I miss roll call? You know, if you're planning to escape, Lieutenant, I suggest losing the entourage.
Harlee is missing.
Probably figured the DNA results would be conclusive and decided to run, but we will find her.
For now, I'm gonna have to detain you, Lieutenant.
He's not going anywhere.
Finally drank the Kool-Aid, I see.
You guys are hell-bent on sharing a cell block, huh? You a quick draw, Detective? Maybe I was wrong about the entourage.
If you wanna solve Miguel Zepeda's murder, look into Robert Stahl.
He's a former FBI agent.
He's obsessed with Harlee.
He killed Zepeda, and now he has her.
I bet he washed his tools in your garage.
He needed me out of the way.
He knows I'd do anything to get Harlee.
So I should just take your word for it.
After all, you've been so stand-up with me, right? If you did five minutes of actual detective work, you wouldn't have to take anyone's word for it.
You get in the way of us finding Harlee, one of your Internal Affairs cronies is finally gonna get the chance to arrest me for what I do to you.
Hard to eat with no hands.
The last time your hands were free, you tried to jab a needle in me.
[chair squeaks.]
Seriously? Remember your scenario training, Harlee.
Survival first.
- Open.
- No.
Fine, suit yourself, you'll get hungry eventually.
Woz and Linda are Cristina's guardians if something happens to me.
If Miguel's murder gets put on him I know that Cristina is the most important thing in your life, Harlee.
I'll always look out for her.
I promise.
I guess that means we're not going far, then.
How does this end? Robert? Well, if you are not gonna eat, you should rest.
Close your eyes for a while.
Wait, I think I am a little hungry.
Now that's my girl.
Here we go.
Open.
[chuckles.]
Oh, sorry.
Whoops, I'm new at this.
Now let's try that again.
[overlapping voices.]
[radio transmissions.]
[sirens blaring.]
Found this under his bed.
And a pair of muddy boots in the closet.
Have CSU dust for fingerprints and check for our victim's DNA.
[sirens blaring.]
Tony, put out a BOLO on FBI Agent Robert Stahl.
He's to be considered armed, dangerous, and likely holding a hostage.
[thwack.]
Any luck with the real estate? No dice, Stahl doesn't own any property outside of the city.
Woz, Woz, you got any idea what the hell Gail Baker's doing in your office? How sure are you that Stahl has her? You don't have time to cover your ass, Gail.
I heard Harlee was a person of interest in a homicide, Matt.
From who? Stahl? Harlee wouldn't go anywhere without Cristina.
You know that.
[sighs.]
I can assign an HRT team to assist in the search.
You run deep background checks on your employees, correct? Does Stahl have any property? Not that I'm aware of.
What about his dead partner? Do you want me to run every property owned by agents in New York, Matt? Gail, you're too good at your job not to know that Stahl was screwing his partner's wife - while he was undercover.
- If I had known that, he would've been gone a long time ago.
You've been doing damage control for him since you picked me up! I'd check your sources on that, Matt.
And you've been feeding information to Internal Affairs so one of us gets pinched so Stahl's investigation blows up, and you can cut him loose! I'm not gonna let you do the same thing to Harlee.
Where was Stahl screwing his mistress? They met somewhere upstate.
It was her place.
That's all I know.
Do you have an address? I can get it.
You wore a wire.
You gave me enough evidence to convince the highers up this wasn't a colossal waste of time.
That terminates your obligation to the bureau, Matt.
I wish I could say "congratulations.
" [grinding.]
[sighs.]
Oh, God, I love this time of year.
The smell of cedar.
My father taught me the trick to starting a good fire is you gotta split the wood first.
The cracks expose it to the heat.
[creaking.]
Have you ever watched a moth circle around a flame, Harlee? It's pure instinct.
It's a desire that's so consuming you just cannot fight it with logic or reason.
Why would you want to? It's a beautiful thing, just kind of dancing on the edges of survival.
The danger, the pain, none of that matters.
It doesn't mean anything.
And once you get close enough, actually feel the heat, the burning, and you realize it's been your entire purpose, and that's why you don't let go.
That's why you push yourself further into the flame, giving up all resistance, consumed entirely.
Never more alive.
You have got goosebumps.
We're both getting warmer.
Oh, Harlee, all I ever wanted to do was help you.
You said you were gonna heal me.
I tried.
You weren't ready.
I am now.
Prove it.
If you really love me Save me.
[yells.]
God [gasping.]
Damn it, Harlee! [gasping.]
Why would you do this to yourself? Help me.
I can't I can't stop it.
Help me.
I need you.
Help me! [gasping.]
That's better.
[gasping.]
If you thought I was gonna let you go that easily, Harlee And if you thought I would ever let you touch me you're crazier than you seem.
- [grunts.]
- [yells.]
[exclaims.]
[grunting.]
[gun clicks.]
We've got our location.
Let's go get our girl.
- Where is she? - It's a drive.
[grunting.]
[exclaims.]
[grunting.]
[yells.]
[grunting.]
Lieutenant, I need to talk to you.
Adrian, I can't talk right now.
I have an emergency.
Quince took my mom.
You were supposed to keep her safe.
[grunting.]
[thud.]
[gasping.]
[grunting.]
[gasping.]
[panting.]
- [grunts.]
- Oh! [grunting.]
All right, look, look, go upstairs, talk to anybody in a uniform, okay? They'll help you.
Come on, Woz, we gotta go! We'll get your mom back, I promise.
I'm sorry.
[gunshot.]
Woz! [dramatic music.]
Somebody! [gasping.]
We need medics here! Hold on, boss, hold on! Oh, my God, don't talk.
Don't try to talk, okay? Stay with us! [laughter.]
Come on, boss, stay awake!
