NARRATOR: Previously on Third Watch: LOMBARDO: Everybody knows Linda? JIMMY: You coming to Walsh's for the--? What's wrong with you? What's wrong with me? Why don't you tell everybody what you did? You stay away from me, Jimmy.
- Linda's pregnant.
- I can't believe this is happening.
Jimmy, it's not yours.
The baby's mine.
When she told me I was gonna be a father first thing I wanted to do: tell my best friend.
JIMMY: In the movie Jerry Maguire Tom Cruise woke up in a cold sweat and decided to make a mission statement.
He felt that his life was out of control.
And in order to get it back on track, he needed a plan.
Think that's what I need too: a mission statement.
A plan.
And my plan includes doing everything I can to make up for the way I've hurt the people I love the most.
Hey.
Sorry I'm late.
- Did I keep you waiting long? - Yeah, a bit.
Good.
- You look good.
WAITRESS: Can I get you some coffee? - Oh, no, thanks.
I'm not staying.
- Okay.
What do you want, Jimmy? - I thought we should talk.
- About what? - I love you.
- Oh.
Don't even say it.
- But I do.
- Just shut up, Jimmy.
God.
[CRYING.]
Damn it.
Brooke.
Hey, I want us to-- - I want us to be together.
- No.
- Look, I made a mistake.
I know that.
- Look, I, um.
- I called a lawyer.
- No.
- No.
Hey, listen to me, I'm sorry.
- He said that because we weren't together for very long - it should be no big deal.
- I promise you, Brooke.
- I promise you.
- I don't want anything from you.
Okay? I don't expect anything.
No alimony or anyth-- Just.
The apartment was mine before we got together.
- So I wanna keep it.
- This won't happen again.
Okay? I'm gonna, um.
I'm gonna have him send you the papers.
It's just, uh.
Just sign them, Jimmy.
Please, just sign them.
LOMBARDO: Go out.
Yeah, go out.
It's on the money.
The gun is working today.
- Yeah, but the game's tomorrow.
- Ah, don't worry about me.
- Hey, guys.
Doc says dinner's almost up.
LOMBARDO: Few minutes, Ma.
Oh, great.
Look who came up out of the sewer.
- Hey, ladies.
- You lost, Knowlins? I know the streets get very confusing With all the big numbers and stuff.
- We're on our way back from fighting a fire.
- Get away from our house.
We're trying to be nice.
We brought some things for after the game: Some Ben-Gay for those broken, old bodies little box of tissue for the tears, and a telescope so you can see us down the field as we get further and further away.
Whoa, you can't give us your telescope.
How are you gonna find your johnson When you're taking a leak? How do you think I learned to wrestle a hose? Thought you learned how to wrestle trying to keep your wife home.
WALSH: we'll see you tomorrow.
- Yes, you will.
Beat it.
I hate that jerk.
- Can't wait to get a shot at that guy.
- Yeah, me first.
- Ooh, Alex.
- You think, after that - I'm not gonna play? - Can you rush the quarterback? - No problem.
- You do know what that means? You want me to knock you on your ass right now and show you? - Whoo.
Keep that chip on your shoulder.
- Would you marry me? D.
K.
: we can get kind of rough out there.
ALEX: Yeah, yeah.
I have four brothers.
D.
K.
: Oh, yeah? LINDA: Hey.
Joe's inside.
I wanna talk to you first.
ALEX: Jimmy.
Come on, let's go.
- Dinner's ready.
- Yeah.
I'll be up in a sec.
- Why? - I had an ultrasound.
I'm actually four months pregnant.
That makes conception right around the time of your engagement party.
Look, I love Joe.
He's a great guy.
But just in case he bails on me because this kid winds up With black hair and dimples I want you to know.
I am not gonna be stuck raising it alone.
We do a fake end-around with-- - Jimmy's here.
D.
K.
's here.
- So I'm a ziti noodle? Well, at least you're not a piece of garlic bread.
This is not you.
This is garlic bread.
- Right.
where am I? D.
K.
: You're nowhere.
What, Taylor's playing, and I'm not? It's fire against fire.
I don't get to play either.
Oh, come on, guys.
I-- You know, I can play.
We could use some cheerleaders.
[CHUCKLING.]
All right, I drop back, Jimmy comes off the line I flip it back to him, I run out to the flank, bingo.
Come on.
That razzle-dazzle crap never works.
- That's why we lost the last four games.
- You got something better? Yeah.
why don't we overload to one side and send Jimmy on a fly? Oh, my future wife speaks.
Honey, take the noodle and show the chumps how to play.
LOMBARDO: Jimmy.
- We're working on a game plan.
- Yeah, I'm gonna grab a shower first.
You guys work out What we're gonna wear tomorrow and when I get back, We'll plan some strategy.
- Done with your strategy session? - Oh.
Look, it's really none of my business but you might wanna rethink being alone with Linda.
You're right.
It's none of your business.
Jimmy.
You're gonna need a towel if you're gonna take a shower with me.
Why do I even bother? All right.
You wanna know? Linda came to tell me that the baby might be mine.
She just wanted to give me a heads-up.
- What are you gonna do? - I'm sure as hell not gonna tell him.
You don't think she will? She says she loves him.
I don't think she's gonna try to mess that up.
- You better tell him first.
- No.
I almost lost my best friend.
I am not taking that chance again.
[ALARM SOUNDS.]
So much for a shower.
Wow.
I gotta tell you, man, firetrucks are cool.
- You should try washing one sometime.
- Okay.
- Must be cool being a fireman.
- It has its moments.
I hear there's a guy at this station they say is one of the best in the city.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
His name's Jimmy something.
- Doherty.
- Yeah.
- Jimmy Doherty.
- Yeah, that's it.
Is he around? I'd like to meet him.
You just did.
- What's this? - Divorce papers.
You're served.
It is a really cool truck.
LOMBARDO: How long you been down here? Oh.
You scared the hell out of me.
You been up long? Yeah, a while.
Can I ask you a question? It's important.
Yeah.
- Do I snore? - What? Ever since I moved in, Linda's been saying I snore, but I think it's a load of crap.
- D.
K.
just kicked me.
Said I woke him up.
- Ha.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah, you snore.
- Come on.
- Do I really? - Like a foghorn.
What are you talking about? Ask anyone in the squad.
- The whole squad knows? - I'm sure the whole neighborhood knows.
Oh, man.
Now I'm gonna have to tell her she was right.
Again.
I guess I should just get used to it, right? Did I tell you, um, I'm building a firetruck bed? Yeah, the front of the bed is gonna be the engine and the body of the truck, the bed.
Don't let the guys know you two are sleeping in a firetruck bed.
It's for the baby.
Something on your mind? Yeah.
How's that arm? You just worry about getting your tired ass open.
That ball's gonna be there.
I'm gonna hit the rack again.
- Daddy.
JIMMY: Hey, champ.
KIM: Hey.
- What's going on? He got tired of sitting at home.
He asked to come and watch.
Is that okay? I mean, is, uh, Brooke gonna be here? - Doubt it.
- Can I go play, Mom? Yeah.
Just stay close.
- Turn around.
Oh, good catch.
- Nice.
Everything all right? - Fine.
LOMBARDO: Yo, come on, Jimmy.
Let's go.
Let's go.
- Well, gotta get out there.
- Okay.
[SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY.]
[CHEERING.]
- Almost had you there, pretty boy.
- Not even close.
KNOWLINS: All right, ready? Break.
- Let's go.
What do we have, the cheerleader's playing football? - It's okay.
She's playing with the girls.
- Just snap the damn ball.
MAN: Red three.
Red three.
Hut, hut.
Go, girl.
She thinks she's one of the boys.
I hear she is, you know? MAN: Blue two.
Blue two.
Hut, hut.
Yeah! What was that? Not bad.
- Oh, way to go, baby.
- Only the beginning.
It's all right.
Come on.
WOMAN: Go, baby.
Now, that's a return, pretty boy.
MAN: You go.
Let's go.
LOMBARDO: Hey, hey.
Hut, hut.
[GROANING AND YELLING.]
Hey.
- That's what I'm talking about.
- Are we hitting now? - Hey, I was just going for the ball.
- Going for the ball, my ass.
- Someone needs to teach you manners.
- I'm standing here.
All right, knock it off.
Knock it off.
- All right, Knowlins.
This flag crap's over.
- It's about time.
No more flags, fellas.
They're gonna kill each other.
I'd say you're about half right.
MAN: Hut, hut.
- All right, huddle up.
You okay? - Yeah.
- All right.
How much time's left? - We end at 2:30 regardless of the score.
- It's gotta be the last play.
- You wanna sit on it and go for the tie? Don't tell me I got my ass kicked for a tie.
All right.
In honor of Alex, let's just go for the win.
Alex, you go in motion.
I'll flip it to you.
Paddy, everybody, go long.
- Ready? Let's go.
- Break.
Break.
MAN 1: Let's go.
MAN 2: Let's go.
LOMBARDO: Forty-two.
Hut, hut.
ALEX: You all right? Can we discuss this next Tuesday When I can breathe again? Come on.
Is there any aspirin left? I would never let a guy point his finger in my face like that.
CARLOS: Somebody better get that girl boxing gloves.
Why is everything in here an extension of the first grade? JIMMY: What's going on? - Lombardo's getting chewed out.
At least it's got nothing to do With you this time, huh? LINDA: Calm down.
Calm down.
WALSH: Yeah, well.
CARLOS: Yeah.
Yeah, I was gonna.
If I knew you were all interested in my domestic squabbles I'd have tried to sell tickets.
[ALARM SOUNDS.]
MAN [OVER SPEAKER.]
: Squad 55, there is a report of smoke coming from a warehouse corner of 186th Street and Wadsworth.
See you.
JIMMY: You're all right, right? LOMBARDO: Yeah, yeah, I'm fine.
Arguing with Linda about the kid.
She bought this book.
She wants to name him something unique, like Hunter or Oliver.
Oliver? That's a cool name.
You could call him Ollie for short.
Get out of here.
That's no firefighter's name.
Hey, Ollie, go get the 6-foot hook.
- I already decided.
It's gonna be Joe.
- That's creative.
My grandpa's Joe.
My father's Joe.
I'm Joe.
My kid's gonna be Joe.
So "Joe," that's a firefighter's name? Yeah.
Don't make fun.
You're ragging on Jimmy's kid too.
- What? - Yeah.
"Joey.
" - You named your kid Joe too.
- So, what if it's a girl? Aha.
Another Lombardo tradition.
- First kid's always a boy.
- And if it isn't? Then I hope she can play football like Taylor here.
[CHUCKLING.]
LOMBARDO: I don't even see any smoke.
- They didn't need to call a second engine in.
- Probably a rubbish fire.
- Let's check it out.
- At least we beat them here, huh? You sure you don't wanna wait and let us make sure it's safe? JIMMY: We'll take care of it.
Have your guys hook up to the hydrant.
We'll make a search.
- All right.
JOHNSON: Yo, over here.
Taylor, Doherty, D.
K.

Cam 55 to Squad 55, We've got nothing yet.
We're gonna miss the Knicks game for a bogus call.
JIMMY: You know, my uncle used to work on one of these piers.
I can't remember which factory, but on the 4th of July We'd all get on the roof and watch the fireworks.
ALEX: I was always stuck eating bad waldorf salad at my crazy aunt's in New Jersey.
JIMMY: You guys smell smoke? D.
K.
: I smell a little something.
ALEX: There we go.
D.
K.
: I'll check this side.

- Carlos! Where's the damn line? We got fire on the third floor.
There's still another kid in there.
I called three times for a hose line.

JIMMY: We've got squatters in there.
There's about three or four.

KNOWLINS: No, Doherty.
We got this.
Doherty, up on that ledge.
Put some up on that ledge.
Watch the support beam.
It's about ready to go.
JOHNSON: Check the water side, all right? LIEUTENANT: Roof is open.
- Stand by, guys.
You got roof ventilation.
Chief, command post is over there.
We made that Exposure 1.
- Fire was nothing, now it's an inferno.
- Accelerant? Looks like it.
KNOWLINS: Line's getting tight.
JIMMY: We're running out of line.
- No.
I need more pressure.
KNOWLINS: we lost our hose.
It won't turn.
JIMMY: Something's wrong with this fire.
It's burning Way too fast.
We need more pressure.

MAN [ON TV.]
: This is Captain Don in Skycopter 3 with a breaking story.
The New York Fire Department is battling a tremendous blaze in a long-abandoned factory on the East River.
The building has become an inferno, burning out of control.
Battalion commanders on-scene have just radioed for a fourth and fifth alarm.
According to F.
D.
N.
Y.
sources a family of squatters was found trapped in the blaze by the initial fire teams on the scene and the father of that family has been pronounced dead.
CHIEF: why don't you get somebody to look at that leg, lieutenant? I haven't seen anything this bad since the Saint George Hotel.
Lieutenant 60 said the building could have old cork insulation.
- That's why that smoke's so thick.
- Yeah, we got 32 firefighters in there.
Anybody comes out of a window, a door, or a ladder, I want them accounted for.
You got it.
Hey, Search.
LOMBARDO: Jimmy? Jimmy? DOC: Get some saline.
Here we go.
Here we go.
Hold on.
[DEVICE BEEPING RAPIDLY.]
Jimmy? JIMMY: We're almost there.
[COUGHING.]

Turn him around.
JIMMY: A beam fell across him.
He couldn't move his legs.
MAN: He's not breathing.
DOC: He's not breathing.
Alex, give me a hand over here.
CARLOS: All right, all right.
Let's get him to the bus.
LOMBARDO: Jimmy? Jimmy? Jimmy? [SCREAMS.]
LIEUTENANT: Hey, chief.
Chief.
It's impossible.
We couldn't get up the stairs.
They're gone.
Floors are dropping.
There's fire throughout the building.
The whole damn thing's coming down.
That's it.
We're backing out.
DOC: Come on, Knowlins.
Come on.
Damn it.
Let's move him.
Carlos, I'm gonna help them load Knowlins into that rig.
- You stay with Jimmy.
- Okay.
- Deep breaths.
ALEX: We're going to get Lombardo.
- What? Joe's in there? ALEX: He went in after you.
CARLOS: Wait, Jimmy, you need more oxygen.
ALEX: He was with three guys.
- They came out.
JIMMY: what floor is he on? ALEX: I don't know.
JOHNSON: Hold up.
Hold up, guys.
- No one else goes back inside.
- What? - Like hell.
- That's an order.
The whole building's falling in on itself.
I can't risk losing any more men.
- Joe's in there.
- I know.
I'm sorry.
CHIEF: Battalion 24 to all units.
Urgent.
Back out.
We are commencing an exterior operation.

It's done.
MAN: Help! Guys, help me! Come back! Please! MAN: It's Lombardo! ALEX: Get a stretcher! Partial-thickness burns to chest and extremities times four.
JIMMY: Hang on, Joe.
DOC: Maybe 30 percent.
Full-thickness burns to left arm, about 8 percent.

Singed nasal hairs.
Two liters saline in.
BP, 100 over 50.

NURSE: More saline.
We got him out soon enough.
He's gonna make it, right? I gotta get back to the fire.
- Knowlins? - I don't know.
How's he doing? Mask got cut.
Couldn't get any air.

Brass are telling his wife right now.
Mrs.
Knowlins, We're very sorry for your loss.
Thank you for getting my husband out.
I'm sorry.
[SOBBING.]
Hey, doc, he's gonna be all right, isn't he? The burns and the fractures aren't life-threatening.
It's the smoke inhalation I'm Worried about.
He's asking for Linda.
He said you'd have the number.
It's a bit premature, but he wants the chaplain as well.
Hey.
Thanks for coming after me.
That's what we do.
Yeah.
Listen, Joe.
Come on, you're gonna be okay.
There's no need for a priest, all right? I want the baby to have my name.
My benefits.
- What? - I'm gonna marry Linda.
Joe.
- You don't have to-- - Don't say it, Jimmy.
- The baby, Joe-- - Shut up.
I wanna marry her.
It's all I got.
CHAPLAIN: "I take you with all your.
" JIMMY: Life's not about hanging on to someone because you care about them.
Excuse me, you got a pen? Sometimes if you care about someone, you have to let them go.
Thanks.
Three firefighters died that night.
Some of them I knew, some of them I had never met.
Some went back into an inferno to try and find me, and never came out.
They didn't ask if I was a good guy before going in.
I think my mission statement starts with living every day of the rest of my life like I deserve what those men did for me.

I'm not staying.
- Okay.
What do you want, Jimmy? - I thought we should talk.
- About what? - I love you.
- Oh.
Don't even say it.
- But I do.
- Just shut up, Jimmy.
God.
[CRYING.]
Damn it.
Brooke.
Hey, I want us to-- - I want us to be together.
- No.
- Look, I made a mistake.
I know that.

K.
, take the other end continue to the third floor and up.

JOHNSON: Let's do a clean sweep.
Cam 55, Squad 55, we need a line on the third-floor rear.
We got-- [STATIC CRACKLES OVER RADIO.]

JIMMY: I need EMS! - Kerosene stove blew up.
- Carlos! Where's the damn line? We got fire on the third floor.
There's still another kid in there.

Taylor to Squad.
I found the boy, but I'm not sure where I am.
Hold tight, Taylor.
We're coming back in to get you.
You're gonna be okay.
Come here.
You're okay.
JIMMY: We've got squatters in there.
There's about three or four.
Lombardo, get Taylor and the kid.

Go up to the third floor.
Take 86's if you have to.
D.
K.
and Walsh, get our hose.

JIMMY: Over there in the corner.
Left.
Left.
To the left.
- Knowlins, we're gonna need another line.
Urgent! We lost our hose.

We need another rescue team.
Squad 55 to Battalion.

[COUGHING.]
Hold on, man.
Hold on, man.
We're gonna get you out.
Hold on, Knowlins.
[GRUNTS.]
JIMMY: Help! Help! Get the ladder! - That's Doherty.
JIMMY: Come on.

Hurry up.
Come on.
Hurry up.

Turn him around.
JIMMY: A beam fell across him.
He couldn't move his legs.
MAN: He's not breathing.
DOC: He's not breathing.
Alex, give me a hand over here.
CARLOS: All right, all right.
Let's get him to the bus.
LOMBARDO: Jimmy? Jimmy? Jimmy? [SCREAMS.]
LIEUTENANT: Hey, chief.
Chief.
It's impossible.
We couldn't get up the stairs.
They're gone.
Floors are dropping.
There's fire throughout the building.
The whole damn thing's coming down.
That's it.
We're backing out.
DOC: Come on, Knowlins.
Come on.
Damn it.
Let's move him.
Carlos, I'm gonna help them load Knowlins into that rig.
- You stay with Jimmy.
- Okay.
- Deep breaths.
ALEX: We're going to get Lombardo.
- What? Joe's in there? ALEX: He went in after you.
CARLOS: Wait, Jimmy, you need more oxygen.
ALEX: He was with three guys.
- They came out.
JIMMY: what floor is he on? ALEX: I don't know.
JOHNSON: Hold up.
Hold up, guys.
- No one else goes back inside.
- What? - Like hell.
- That's an order.
The whole building's falling in on itself.
I can't risk losing any more men.
- Joe's in there.
- I know.
I'm sorry.
CHIEF: Battalion 24 to all units.
Urgent.
Back out.
We are commencing an exterior operation.
All right.

No.
- It's over.
It's done.
Oxygenation improved with 15 liters via nonrebreather.
Singed nasal hairs.
Two liters saline in.

NURSE: More saline.
We got him out soon enough.
He's gonna make it, right? I gotta get back to the fire.
- Knowlins? - I don't know.
How's he doing? Mask got cut.
Couldn't get any air.
Took a lot of smoke.
- He's tough.
- Yeah.
How are the other guys? Knowlins didn't make it.
Died in the ambulance.
They couldn't get him back.
