Macgyver s02e22 Episode Script

For Love or Money

Anton! Anton! Anton Dubcek.
Viera! Anton! Anton! That's Anton Dubcek.
This is his wife, Viera.
Were these taken in Czechoslovakia? Right.
He heads a group there called Humanity.
He organized it and led it, fighting for human rights, until he was arrested four days ago.
- By these two beauties.
- Yeah.
Yevgeny Zorkin and Emil Baranov, GRU agents.
Soviet military intelligence.
They took Dubcek, but let his wife, Viera, go.
Did his wife get you the pictures? No, they came to us from the person who actually shot them and smuggled them out of the country.
Well, they're not bad.
I'd like to meet him.
Well, you got it.
- Hello, MacGyver.
- Diana.
- Long time.
- Not long enough.
MacGyver.
MacGyver, wait.
MacGyver, just listen to the deal, as a favour to me.
What, one of her deals? That's not a favour, that's a human sacrifice.
Do you have any idea what I went through on that embassy deal with her? That was three years ago, MacGyver.
History.
Besides, the Pentagon was very happy about getting those documents.
- What about the money you took? - The Pentagon has enough money.
Now, let's talk about this project, shall we? Private investors have put up one-half million dollars to see Anton Dubcek safely in the United States.
We split it fifty-fifty.
Not interested.
MacGyver, this isn't about documents or money.
It's about a human life.
Dubcek is being held in the psychiatric ward of a state hospital in Czechoslovakia.
This is a rogue operation.
Soviet hardliners and the GRU.
They wanna discredit him and then maybe even kill him.
Shouldn't somebody be talking to the Soviet government about all this? They won't admit they've got people out of control in their top military intelligence.
And by the time they straighten it out, Dubcek could be dead.
This operation has got to be unofficial and fast.
You've got a professional mercenary here.
What do you need me for? Because you know the hospital where he's being held.
You broke a man out of there last year.
You're the only expert around.
Without you, the deal won't fly.
All right, you don't like me.
I did pull a fast one on you once.
But I promise, scout's honour, we're partners this time.
No games.
Well, which would you rather save, MacGyver? Your pride or a man's life? How do we get in? By airplane to Vienna, and then car into Czechoslovakia.
You'll be travelling as a honeymoon couple.
- MacGyver.
- What is it, Diana? You gonna carry me over the threshold when we get to the hotel? Forget it.
We don't have to start the honeymoon stuff till we get to the Czech border.
So first things first.
Where do we meet this contact of yours? You mean Krug.
He's waiting for us at the honeymoon suite.
So tell me, why are you going into Czechoslovakia? I never miss the Prague Flower Festival.
Now, put a cork in it.
I'm paying you to get us across the border, not ask questions.
Diana, have I ever failed you? I have the papers.
I've made the arrangements.
I'm simply filling the empty moments.
Prepare yourselves.
Be ready.
We are coming to the border.
We're ready.
You do your job, we'll do ours, Krug.
I'm sure you will, Diana.
Okay, here we are.
Time for the honeymoon, ja? - Lucky fellow.
- Oh, can it, Krug.
Welcome to Czechoslovakia.
- Your auto is there.
- Where? Behind the trees, out of sight, with gasoline.
And the papers and a picnic lunch.
The best.
First.
You get the rest here at 5:00 when you meet us.
- What if you are not here? - Send flowers.
So the bridegroom does have a voice.
- And he speaks English.
- Once in a while.
- We'll see you at 5, huh? - Good.
Nice guy.
You trust him? You know me better than that, MacGyver.
I don't trust anybody.
That's what you ordered? I wanted something that wouldn't attract attention.
Even when they see us pushing it down a highway? Don't be negative, MacGyver.
Now, look, I've worked with Krug before.
He's a thief, he's a liar, but when you give him money, he comes through.
All right, the battery's dead.
Or a fuse blew.
Or it shorted.
Do something.
What? You're the one who picked the embassy lock with the light-bulb filament and ground-up pencil lead.
You're also the one who shorted an alarm system with a chewing-gum wrapper and a half a lemon.
Come on.
All right.
I suppose there's something I could try.
MacGyver, what are you doing? Worked.
For a minute, I thought you were putting the moves on me.
Don't flatter yourself.
You always were a smooth talker.
It's a public hospital, so there's traffic that moves in and out.
Yeah, but there's tight internal security.
Four gates, and they all got guards.
Yeah, but once we get inside, we can move freely around all the buildings.
And that's when we head over here to the psychiatric wing.
- That's where Dubcek is.
- Right.
Psychiatric ward, cell eight.
Now, we can cut through the fence over here.
Where'd you learn how to speak Czech? Correspondence school.
Like "Czech is in the mail"? Now, look.
We cut through the fence here.
And set off the perimeter alarms? Why don't we just drive right in, head for the psychiatric ward.
They've got a medical lab there with about everything we need to cook up a little diversion.
"Cook up"? I have arranged a very detailed plan here.
Yeah, and every one of those details is just another thing that can go wrong.
- What's that for? - I like to go in with an open mind.
Kind of loose.
Use what they've got against them.
Well, it sounds fine if you talk fast, but how will you get through this gate? Who could refuse a dying man? We're Americans, but my husband's been hurt.
Okay, how much time do I give you? It's 1 1 :45.
Give me 1 5 minutes exactly.
Twelve noon on the button.
Outside Dubcek's cell.
Don't come early, and don't be late.
If I'm not there, just take off.
Whatever it is you've got planned, do it right.
Stay alive.
Well, thanks.
I didn't think you cared.
Oh, I do.
I do.
My payoff depends on you not fouling up.
Thanks.
One thing I had going for me was I'd been here before.
Nothing had changed.
They still had an armed guard and locked doors.
The problem was how to get in.
But the food cart gave me an idea.
Now all I had to do was whip up something special for them to serve along with this hospital food.
Good.
Schedule hasn't changed.
As I remember, the hospital staff breaks for lunch before they serve the patients.
So I figure I had about six minutes to put together some kind of diversion.
Carbon black.
Scatter it in the air and I'd have a nice cloud of dirty smoke.
I just needed some way to deliver it.
Good.
Now for a container.
It's kind of interesting how you can put one thing with another and cook up the right formula for staying out of trouble.
My old high school physics and chemistry classes come in real handy sometimes.
Not to mention the fact that when you're in a squeeze, necessity always seems to come through as the true mother of invention.
I needed a diversion.
And a smoke bomb seemed like the right thing to use under the circumstances.
The idea I was playing with was to use the lid on these potatoes as the primary trigger.
The problem was getting somebody else to pull it.
Well, I had a way in to the psychiatric ward.
I just needed a way out.
Nitro tablets.
For jump-starting a bad heart.
They'll do just fine.
Each tablet contains a measurable amount of nitro-glycerine.
The best way I had of getting to it was by crushing the tablets into powder.
Add a little alcohol, and I'll jump Anton Dubcek right through his cell window.
Explosive nitro-glycerine paste.
Very unstable.
A hard sneeze could set it off.
All right.
I had a nitro bomb and a smoke bomb.
Anybody bumped into me too hard well, it'd be memorable.
Now all I needed was the right kind of delivery uniform.
Mr.
Dubcek.
Mr.
Dubcek.
I'm gonna get you out of here.
Dubcek.
Go! We did it.
- Welcome aboard, Mr.
Dubcek.
- What? What is it? What it is is freedom.
We just broke you out.
- You are Americans? - That's right.
My name's MacGyver.
This is Diana Rogers.
- Hi.
- You-- - You broke me out of the hospital.
- Free and clear.
Now we're gonna get you out of the country.
No, dear God.
You have to take me back at once.
- It is my wife.
- Your wife? Viera.
They arrested her.
They told me if I try to defect, they execute her.
Kill her.
I beg you, take me back.
Please.
- You feeling better? - A little.
But when is MacGyver returning? We have to get back before my wife-- Here you go, Anton.
I got you something to wear.
- Now we can both be fashion plates.
- Thank you.
What did you do with the ambulance? - Ran it off the road.
- Is this the best you could do? - Well, it's all I could afford.
- You bought this junk heap? You could've stolen something with more muscle.
I don't work that way.
Anton, what do you say we go get your wife? Thank you, MacGyver.
Anton, why don't you just get into your clothes.
We'll give you some privacy.
Are you nuts or just simple-minded? Well, the expert opinion is still out on that.
- She is in a GRU lockup.
- She happens to be his wife.
- She's not part of the deal.
- Let me put it this way: He won't go without her.
And haven't you ever loved anyone that much? - Not in my right mind.
- Then you don't have to come along.
I've got no choice.
Delivering that man is worth one-half million dollars.
Anton, do you know where they're keeping your wife? Of course.
The Soviets are invaders of my country.
Very visible.
Good.
Let's go rescue her.
- Thank you, Diana.
- Anytime.
That is it.
Yep, that's Zorkin's GRU car.
How can we ever get Viera out of there? Oh, maybe Zorkin and Baranov are gonna do it for us.
You wanna let us all in on your little secret? Well, that's a holding prison, not an interrogation centre.
My guess is they'll take her out for interrogation now that you're on the missing list.
Boy, you sure called that one right.
They're going to kill her unless I give myself up.
No.
Do you have any idea where they might be taking her? Yes, to Red Army regional headquarters at Caslav.
You know any shortcuts? So we might be able to intercept them.
To rescue Viera? Yes, of course.
- How? - We'll just let the GRU rescue us.
Slow down.
Look.
Someone had an accident.
- Looks like they're hurt.
- Stop the car, quick.
Go see if they're alive.
Don't even breathe.
Anton! Right over here.
Easy.
All right, this ought to keep you out of trouble for a while.
- Duct tape? - Never leave home without it.
Who are you? Like everybody else, part of humanity.
Humanity is an illegal organization.
If you do not release me at once, my superiors-- Nothing personal.
All right, here we go.
Nice and easy.
Come on, save it for the car.
- What's that for? - Baling wire.
- Can fix just about anything.
- What's to fix? We're home free.
Not until we cross the border.
Remember me? I like to stay loose.
Keep an open mind.
Whatever makes you happy.
Hello, Diana.
I've been waiting for you.
And I see you have acquired more luxurious transportation.
- Did you get your flowers? - Yeah, they're in the back seat.
So I see.
And the honeymoon? It was all that you expected? Short, but exhausting.
And definitely over, ja? - What are you doing? - Selling you, dear lady.
Sorry, but business is business.
Don't move! Don't be foolish! - My friends here are superb shots.
- You're right.
He can't be trusted.
Do you think that baling-wire gag of yours will really work? Yeah, it should.
The ignition coil delivers about 20,000 volts.
MacGyver, that'll charge the whole car.
What happens to us? We have the rubber tires to insulate us.
They'll get a pretty good jolt.
No real damage.
Now, if you will please step out of the car, we can place an official end to the honeymoon.
Well, now, see, that poses a real problem for us.
See, if we put our hands down, these two fine young gentlemen might shoot.
They might misunderstand what we're doing.
You see our dilemma.
Now.
Hold it, Krug! It was amazing.
Just as you said.
Well, let's just say that precaution paid off.
You boys kind of came prepared for a little trouble, didn't you? Because there is an alert for you.
All of you.
The border is shut down.
Every post for 50 kilometres.
And you are not wanted dead or alive, my friends.
Only dead.
Are you sure this is a good idea? I think it's the only chance we've got.
You two better get down.
Krug.
Where is Krug? He's all tied up, but he told me to give you this.
Go.
Please stop.
MacGyver, that is wonderful.
To trick them instead of killing them.
Well, it's kind of hard for a grenade to work when you take the explosive out.
Come on, we better hurry.
We got a plane to catch.
On behalf of the captain and crew, we would like to welcome you to the Los Angeles area.
The time now is 2:09, and the temperature is 78 degrees.
Thank you for flying with us.
MacGyver, it is beautiful! Well, thanks, Viera.
I don't think anyone's ever said that before.
- I like it.
You are very gracious.
- And thoughtful.
Well, it's the least we could do.
There'll be a new home ready for you sometime tomorrow, but in the meantime, it's yours.
You can have a second honeymoon.
Actually, we never had a first one.
You remember? I had to go off on an organizing trip.
I remember.
And it is nothing to make jokes.
Honeymoon? We've had no life together.
I'm sorry.
- I am very tired.
- No.
I am sorry.
And thoughtless.
But now we are free, - we are together, to make a new life.
- Absolutely.
But first in the new life, new clothes, no? Yes, guaranteed.
I'll even take you shopping.
- It's included in the fee.
- You're on.
Anton, you and I have a few miles of red tape to untangle.
No problem, but it'll take an hour.
Diana, if you'll wait here, I'll arrange for your money.
You said the magic word.
All right, thank you.
Well, the money is on its way over.
- Wanna count it when it gets here? - No, thanks.
- Diana can handle that for both of us.
- Guaranteed.
Eight-to-five she counts it twice.
What are you gonna do with your share? Oh, I don't know.
Maybe get a new roll of duct tape.
- Well, are you all set? - It was wonderful.
So quick, and your lawyer says we can stay in U.
S.
A.
without problems.
I am lucky beyond luck.
But not to forget my friends, my people back home.
To help them.
You realize you can be heard almost anywhere in the world from here.
And perhaps move the world, only a little.
That is why we call our group Humanity.
No guns.
Only people.
And some dangerous ideas.
I'll show you where everything is, then get out of your way.
MacGyver, you are like a very discreet matchmaker.
Well, somebody did say something about a second honeymoon.
Viera.
MacGyver.
- Are you all right? What happened? - Viera is gone.
Anton, I'm so sorry.
I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything.
She was in the bath and I was reading.
The door wasn't forced.
They picked the lock or came in through a window.
The GRU are professional.
Yeah, we don't know who did it.
I know.
Yes? May I speak with Anton Dubcek, please? - Who's asking? - A dear old friend.
- Zorkin.
- Anton.
Good to hear your voice.
Now, listen.
Anton, please.
They say they will kill me unless you give yourself up to them.
Please.
Please, I am frightened.
On the other hand, we will release her safely, to go where she wishes, stay where she likes, in exchange for your cooperation.
Be at the city zoo in one hour.
We will find you.
Let me talk to her.
Well, there's no way you can go along with them.
Of course.
You are correct.
And of course I have no choice.
Anton looks like he's wound up so tight he's about to snap.
Well, wouldn't you be if the woman you loved were under the gun? Yeah, I guess so.
I don't know why I blew up like that.
Keep an eye on him.
I'm gonna check our agency backup.
Look at him.
Three tons and a bad temper.
Now, that's the way to handle the world.
Pretty tough, aren't you? Realistic.
You would be too, if you'd let yourself.
You risk your life, you deserve payment.
- We earned our money, MacGyver.
- "Our money"? I'm very flattered.
You're the second man I've ever trusted.
- What happened to the first? - David.
Sweet David.
I met him in Europe, right after that embassy job with you.
You know, I felt really badly about that.
- Well, you never told me.
- It's because I was embarrassed.
The problem was I liked you, MacGyver.
And I used you, and I guess I just didn't feel very good about myself.
Maybe that's why I was so vulnerable.
- For this David? - I left myself open.
- What happened? - His name wasn't David.
It was Pyotro.
And he wasn't my lover, he was KGB.
Trying to get those papers back.
I found out and he tried to kill me.
I was faster.
And I killed him.
No, I'm okay.
It's over with.
And right now we have something much more important to worry about.
- Just look at that poor man.
- Yeah, I know.
Well, there's no sign of contact yet.
Maybe the GRU got nervous and backed off.
Well, that's not very likely.
Perimeter security is all set.
Anything? Nothing yet.
Nobody's even come near him.
Anton.
No, look ahead.
Listen, they can see us.
The GRU.
They have a gun aimed at me.
- Where? Tell me.
I will protect you.
- No, please.
We must do what they say.
Exactly as they say.
I'll show you.
MacGyver, Pete, look.
- That's Viera.
- I think you're right.
They're gone.
Come on.
Thornton here.
Lock up the southwest corridor.
Hurry! This is the place.
- They are watching now? - Of course.
Listen.
MacGyver, Pete and Diane are here.
They have agency people with them.
So when I say, "Drop to the ground," I will protect you.
No.
There is no escape, Anton.
- We are in America.
- Yes.
That is why we have decided to end it here and now.
Viera.
You are my wife.
It was an assignment.
- You are too dangerous, Anton.
- Because I wanted freedom? Because you would begin a second revolution.
One death is preferable to thousands.
No! Viera, no! - You all right? - Yes.
Stay with him.
What happened? She looked at me.
My wife looked at me and shot.
She's GRU.
If you hadn't given me the bullet-proof vest, I would be dead.
Look, you just stay here.
Okay? It's done.
They saw me.
Come on.
Come on, let's get out of here.
Freeze! - Take him, Pete.
- And I'm supposed to look, huh? Watch out! He's got a knife! My, my.
Well, you said you wanted your half of the money in cash.
- There it is.
- Sure is.
Over 200,000 thou apiece after expenses.
- Where's your half? - lnvested.
See, the Phoenix Foundation takes care of all my expenses, so anything extra is extra.
What did you invest in? MacGyver, Pete, Diana, my good friends.
- Have you heard? Is it not wonderful? - What? I am able to work with other refugees to bring them to America.
Someone has given $200,000 for this.
To give so much money, a person must be very rich.
But I cannot learn the name.
Well, it's an anonymous donor.
Yeah, some hopeless do-gooder.
And the money will do good.
When Viera betrayed me, I felt I could have faith in no one.
But now comes this money from a stranger to help others gain their freedom.
My faith returns again, because I know there are good people still in this world.
Yeah, well, say hello to another hopeless do-gooder.
- I'll contribute.
- Two hundred thousand dollars? Not that hopeless.
Here's $20,000.
- Diana.
- Please, just take it.
Before I realize what I'm doing.
Thank you.
You are very generous.
That's something no one's ever said to me before.
Feels pretty good, doesn't it?
