Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990) s02e23 Episode Script

Cardio Funk

There's one more small box in the back seat of the car, Brandon.
I'll get it.
- I got a good feeling about this, Nat.
- Oh, you think so? Yeah, did you read the brochure my client sent? Yeah, it was pretty impressive.
This is the perfect place for one of these.
You have a well-established clientele, this'll bring in new traffic.
Believe me, that cash register's gonna ring.
Oh, I hope you're right.
Make sure the whole crew is here tomorrow night when we crank this baby up, because we are gonna rock 'n' roll.
Okay, move those arms.
Feel the beat.
Good.
From the beginning.
Go on, laugh all you want.
They hired me for comic relief.
You're doing great.
- Better than my friend here.
- Oh, thank you.
- You must be a ringer.
- Actually, it's my first time.
Oh, God, now I'm really humiliated.
Okay, move our hips.
Isolate, isolate.
Who does he think I am, a Fly Girl? - Tim, can we focus here? - I'm focusing.
I'm focusing.
- He's cute.
- Kelly, we're not here to meet guys.
Suit yourself.
Hi, my name is Sarah.
And I'm an alcoholic.
Hi, Sarah.
I've been sober 50 days now.
Unfortunately, they've been spread out over the last four years.
I wasn't that comfortable with myself so drinking helped me fit in.
- I know this girl.
- You sure? - I think she's a first-timer.
- I was drunk at school a lot.
One time, I even tossed my cookies in the principal's office.
I'm 18 now.
And about a year ago, I thought I hit rock bottom.
I got really wasted one time I went surfing and nearly drowned.
Some kids fished me out and took me to the hospital just in time.
My friends were the ones who fished her out of the ocean.
Then I met this guy.
And we moved in together.
And we drank together.
About a couple weeks ago, he beat me up pretty bad.
And that's how I got here.
I've been sober for about a week now.
And I guess that's a start.
Up slowly.
Okay, good night, everybody.
- Hi, I'm Tim Matthews.
- Brenda Walsh.
Let me guess.
Actress? Dancer.
Star Search spokesmodel? - No, I go to West Beverly.
- No kidding.
I went to Beverly.
I'm at UCLA now.
Premed.
Well, it's nice meeting you.
This is my friend Kelly.
- Hello, friend Kelly.
- Hi.
So listen, just about the last thing I wanna do right now is go back to the dorm and study organic chemistry.
So I was wondering, maybe you'd like to go get a bite to eat or something.
Brenda.
Sorry, but Kelly's my ride.
I have to go.
Well, I could take you home.
I don't think so.
Okay.
Well, maybe I can call you sometime.
- Well - Come on.
- You do have a phone.
- Yes.
So? So I also have a boyfriend.
Oh, gee, and I only have a two-seater.
He's gonna have to stay home.
Brenda.
We really have to go.
Well, I'll see you back here Sunday night.
Sunday night? Sure, see you then.
Brenda, I thought we were only coming to this class on Fridays, when Dylan's at his AA meeting in Malibu.
Well, I was thinking I might need a little bit more exercise.
- Oh, I see.
- What's the matter? - I can't believe you.
- What? - You were totally coming on to him.
- I was not.
I was being sociable.
I don't think that Tim was able to make that subtle distinction.
Look, Kelly, it's not like I gave him my phone number or anything.
And besides, I told him that I had a boyfriend.
Only because I was standing there.
Kelly, I'm here to exercise.
Nothing more.
- Sarah.
- I know you.
- Dylan.
- I know.
- How you doing? - I'm okay.
How you doing? Well, better than the last time you saw me.
Yeah, you were pretty wasted.
Yeah, I'm pretty good at that.
So you ever see that guy Brandon? Yeah, yeah, all the time, you know, at school and then some.
How's he doing? Oh, he's good.
Never really got into surfing, though.
I mean, you can take the boy out of Minnesota, but you can't take the Minnesota out of the boy.
He saved my life.
Him and his sister Brenda.
Yeah, Brenda.
They should have just let me drown.
It's not their style.
- So are you still surfing? - Oh, all the time.
Yeah, I was actually thinking about getting back into it.
Maybe the salt water will help me get this mush out of my brain.
The waves are up.
And I'm going out tomorrow morning, if you wanna meet me.
- Yeah, yeah.
Maybe I will.
- Be good for you.
Are you sure this is a good idea? You don't see the bills, Brandon.
Since the remodelling and this recession thing, yeah, we got the lunch traffic, all right, but our night business isn't what it used to be.
Who's that? If he's got a gun and a mask, tell him we're closed.
Hey, man, what are you doing here? I came to bring you greetings from an old friend.
Really? Who's that? You remember surf betty, Sarah? How could I forget? I jump-started her lungs.
Yeah, well, she remembers you too.
Well, that's because I give great mouth-to-mouth.
So how's she doing? I saw her at an AA meeting.
Of what I remember, she could use it.
Hey, what, am I doing this alone or what? Don't ask.
- Dylan.
- Hi.
- It's not too late, is it? - No, of course not.
- How was your class? - Oh, you know.
A lot of lonely, sweaty people without a date on a Friday night.
- How was your meeting? - Oh, it was fine.
- I got something to show you.
- What? Ninety days sobriety, Bren.
Dylan, I had no idea.
I'm so proud of you.
I didn't even know about it.
Maybe you should come to a meeting with me sometime.
I would love to.
How about Sunday? - Sunday night? - Yeah.
I don't know, I might have something.
But I'll just cancel.
It's okay.
Thanks.
So do you wanna come in for a while? No, it's getting late and I gotta get up early in the morning because the waves are happening and the shape will probably blow out in a couple of days.
- Good night, Bren.
- Good night.
I'm glad you made it.
I didn't think you'd show.
It feels great.
I haven't been here in so long.
Well, we'll go around the point there.
Prettiest swells that you've ever seen.
Thanks, Dylan.
Thanks for getting me out here.
This is what it used to be like before I had to get drunk to have a good time.
Man, I used to love to get high and ride those waves.
Me too.
I started drinking at the beach.
It's crazy, but it seemed so natural at the time.
That's what other people don't get, do they? No, I guess they don't.
So are you still in school, or did you graduate? Neither, I dropped out.
My boyfriend and I- Ex-boyfriend, that is.
- were sharing a dump on Calvert Street up in Van Nuys.
And I got a job shampooing hair in a hair salon.
- That's great.
- No, it isn't.
But I did sign up for beauty school.
And I'm gonna get my licence to cut hair.
Yeah? You wanna cut my hair? Now, that'd be a challenge.
Good morning, good morning.
Everyone looking forward to tonight? Yeah, haven't lived till you've karaoked, right? I've talked to the guys at the office, everyone's coming.
Oh, our friends too.
Kelly, Steve, Donna, David, even Andrea.
Well, it sounds like the Pit's gonna be packed.
Great.
My clients tell me that the bigger the crowd, the better.
Get people to try karaoke once and they're hooked.
You're not gonna stand up there and sing, are you? Yes, I am.
Don't worry, Mom.
You'll only be humiliated in front of 150 of our closest friends.
Hello.
Yes, she's right here.
Who's calling, please? Tim Matthews.
- Tell him I'm not home.
- Too late for that.
Tim, hi.
Sure, it's okay.
No, no, you did not make a fool out of yourself last night.
Who's Tim Matthews? I don't know.
Oh, I can't, I have other plans.
Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you.
Sounds like she likes him.
All right, well, thanks for calling.
You're very sweet.
Bye.
What are you staring at? - Nothing.
- Nothing at all.
Thanks again, Dylan, for getting me out here.
It was fun.
Oh, anytime.
Listen, I was wondering, you feel like going to the movies tonight or something? I can't, I made plans already.
Oh, no sweat, I'll find something to do.
It's just not that easy being by myself these days, you know? Yeah.
You can always go to a meeting, you know.
Two days in a row? Hey, whatever gets you through the night.
All right, everyone.
Please, I'd like to welcome you to the debut of karaoke at the Peach Pit.
All right.
And I would like to invite Jim Walsh the honour of first at mike.
- Go get them, big guy.
- After all, it was his idea.
Thank you, Nat.
Welcome, everybody.
It's great to see you all, thanks for coming out.
For my first number, I'm gonna do one of my old favourites.
His first number? How many of these things is he gonna do? Take it away, Nat.
There she was Just a-walkin' down the street Singin', "Do wah diddy-" - I do not know that man.
- Come on, Mrs.
Walsh, he's great.
Snappin' her fingers And shufflin' her feet, singin'- So, what do you think? He looked good - She looked fine - Looked fine She looked so fine, I blew my mind Walkin' next to me, singin'- "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" Holdin' my hand Just as natural as can be, singin'- "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy-" Hello.
- We walked on - To my door - We walked on to my door - To my door - Then we kissed a little more - Then we kissed a little more I can't believe even you got up there.
Yeah, I've never seen so many sober people acting stupid in my whole life.
Listen, I'm hungry.
You want a sandwich or something? - Boy, times sure have changed.
- What? Used to be, we'd walk in here and the first thing on your mind was definitely not food.
Oh, well, that is definitely not out of the question.
Come here.
Wait a minute, incoming.
Can't be that important, I just saw everybody in the world that I know.
Hi, it's me, Sarah.
I hope it's not too late.
But I'm not doing so hot tonight.
In fact, I need a drink pretty bad.
Call me, please.
Bye.
Someone from the programme.
I figured.
It's supposed to be confidential.
I'm sorry.
Why don't you drive me home? That way, you can call her and do what you have to do.
- Are you sure? - Yeah, it's okay.
- I'm so glad to see you.
- Hey, calm down.
Thanks for coming.
I didn't know who else to call.
- Not a pretty sight, is it? - He won't leave.
If he stays, I know I'm gonna take that bottle out of his hand, drink it myself.
Hey, buddy, time to go home.
Come on.
Who the hell are you? I'm a friend of Sarah's, and I think she asked you to leave, right? Oh, so this is him? This is why you wanted to break up so bad.
It wasn't the booze.
You got another guy.
- That's not true.
- You little slut.
Hey.
I'm real scared of you, tough guy.
Doug, please.
Come on, man, why don't you just take the bottle? Go somewhere else.
She's made it real clear, she doesn't wanna see you anymore.
Oh, I get it.
You're the sobriety patrol.
I didn't know you guys made house calls.
Or is it just for the blonds? - Come on.
- Hey, I'm going, I'm going.
You can have her.
Oh, God.
- It's all right.
- Please, please, don't leave.
- Please stay with me.
- All right.
He's gonna come back.
- No, he's not.
- I'm scared, he's gonna come back.
He's not gonna come back, all right? Not as long as I'm here.
Forget about it, Bren.
Outreach calls are a part of Dylan's programme.
I know, it was just weird hearing her voice.
"Hi, Dylan.
It's me, Sarah.
I need you.
" It's not just like it's any girl, I know her.
How? Remember that girl last year who was surfing drunk? Yeah, the blond.
I thought her name was Betty.
That's just what they call her, because she's a surf betty.
Oh, a bimbo.
You know, Dylan didn't even tell me it was her.
He told Brandon he ran into her.
Not me.
Bren, that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I called him before I went to sleep last night.
- It was real late.
- And? He wasn't home, Kel.
And he wasn't there first thing this morning either.
Brenda, I'm sure there's a simple explanation.
You should just ask him.
I just don't wanna push it, you know? Besides, I wanna see if he'll tell me himself.
Yeah, I guess.
I mean, it's not like you've told him about Tim or anything.
- What does that mean? - Brenda, you were flirting with him.
Kelly, he's just some guy who said hello to me in exercise class.
There's nothing to tell.
Okay.
There she was Just a-walkin' down the street Singin', "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" Jim, please.
Give it a rest.
Yeah, Jim.
You guys just don't have an ear for talent.
Ladies, ladies, ladies, what is all this? Exercise class and jogging? What are you getting in shape for? That's a good question, Brenda.
What are we getting in shape for? For ourselves.
Did Dylan happen to call while we were out? - No, but Tim called.
- He did? He's calling you now? Oh, and there's nothing to tell.
- Kelly.
- I'm sure you'll tell Dylan all about it, won't you? He left a number.
Just who is this Tim character, anyway? Just some guy that I met in exercise class.
- A guy who makes you blush.
- Brandon.
Fear not, young sibling.
My lips are sealed.
What's that? Breakfast in bed.
Eggs, toast, I couldn't find any coffee, but I think this soda has caffeine in it.
That's great, thanks.
No, thank you.
I don't think I could have slept a wink if I had to be here by myself.
You look cute in the morning.
Thanks.
Dylan - This isn't a good idea.
- But why not? Look, you know about the 12 steps, right? Sure, "AA's 12 steps are a group of principles, which, if practised as a way of life, can expel the obsession to drink.
" - Yadda, yadda- - But there's a 13th step, and that's when people in the programme start fooling around.
What's wrong with that? At least you know you're fooling around with someone who doesn't drink.
No, no- Look, I know that it's hard for you right now.
I know that, but you just can't go getting involved with every guy that's nice to you.
I'm not talking about every guy.
I'm talking about you.
I need you, Dylan.
You're in the programme, you can help me stay sober.
You don't even know me.
You surf and you're sober.
What else do I need to know? God, I want a drink so bad.
Just forget about one day at a time, okay? Try one hour.
Call a sponsor, go to a meeting.
Or take a walk, anything.
Why can't I just have you? I have a girlfriend.
I should have told you sooner.
I'm sorry.
Dylan, I can't do this by myself.
I'm scared.
I'm so scared.
I'm scared I'm- I'm just gonna- I'm gonna slide away.
I'm not gonna let that happen.
I promise.
Go to the meeting tonight, okay? I'll be there.
Friend Kelly, right? Hi, Tim.
Brenda's not here.
I know.
She told me she wasn't gonna be here.
She said she had other plans.
With her boyfriend.
So? They're not engaged, are they? - No.
- Well, then, fair game.
- You don't give up, do you? - I'm relentless.
It's part of my charm.
Next week, Dylan, you're bringing the coffee.
And, Phil, you're leading.
Great.
All right, see you all then.
And, remember, what do we say? Keep coming back.
It works if you work it.
Great, thanks.
- So, what do you think? - Well, it's different than I expected.
I mean, I thought it would be depressing or boring or something.
But it wasn't.
It was kind of intense and fun at the same time.
Yeah, well, nobody would come if it was a total drag.
People get really personal, though.
I mean, they talk about everything.
Sex, money.
I thought they would just talk about drinking.
People need to share their secrets.
It's a big relief.
You get it off your chest, you know, it makes it less painful, and, well, if you're in less pain, you might not drink.
You didn't have much to say tonight.
Don't you have any secrets? So I finally get to meet the much-exalted Brenda Walsh.
- Yup, finally got her to come.
- You mean you finally asked.
I'm Ben.
- My sponsor.
- I know who Ben is.
Dylan's told me a lot about you.
Not as much as he's told me about you.
I was afraid of that.
Oh, don't worry.
Your secrets are safe with me.
And a roomful of alcoholics.
- Ben, have you seen Sarah? - No.
- I'm worried about her, man.
- Listen, you work your programme and let Sarah work hers.
Your cheatin' heart Will make you weep You'll cry and cry - This is, like, too hip, huh? - Come on, she's got real talent.
Yeah, yeah.
Someone put her out of her misery, please.
She's making me nostalgic for Mr.
Walsh.
- Hello, hello.
- Hey, Nat.
So, what did I tell you? Is this great or what? I got to admit it.
They are here and they are buying.
- Thank you, pal.
- My pleasure.
I don't know how to tell you this, honey, but I feel a song coming on.
Oh, no, honey, not again.
Be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby Be-bop-a-lula Hang in there, Mom.
Only three more hours till closing.
Be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby Be-bop-a-lula, I don't mean maybe Be-bop-a-lula, she's my baby - Hey, guys.
- Hi.
- This is Tim.
- Hi.
- Hi.
- How you doing? - Hi.
- Good to meet you.
Hey, Kel, what'll it be? This is Brandon, Brenda's brother.
This is Tim Matthews.
Oh, hi, Brandon.
- You got a real cute sister.
- Thanks.
- You must be exercise-class Tim.
- I guess I am.
But don't let this incredible physique fool you, I'm really lousy at it.
Now I know why you're suddenly so into aerobics.
Not even.
He doesn't even know I exist.
- Yeah, so why is he here? - He's looking for Brenda.
Brenda? What about Dylan? I don't know.
I tried to tell him, but it's just not sinking in.
All right.
Well, don't look now.
Things are about to get interesting.
Yeah Hoo, boy Who knew accountants could be so groovy? Hey, guys.
Bren, a friend of yours just showed up.
Who? Do the laptop, where? Great.
Brenda.
Who's that? Just some guy I met in exercise class.
Excuse me, will you, a minute? Sure.
Hi.
Kelly told me you might be here.
Oh, she did? I'll be sure to thank her.
Tim Matthews, this is Dylan McKay.
- Hi.
- How you doing? So you guys met at, what, an aerobics class? Cardio Funk, actually.
- Really gets the heart rate going.
- Yeah.
Take my pulse, please.
- He's premed.
- Yeah.
I gotta make a phone call.
- Now? - Yeah, I wanna try Sarah and see if she's come in yet.
Okay.
I'll be right back.
Hi, honey.
Hi.
Tim, this is my mother.
Oh, hi.
Nice to meet you.
And that up there is my father.
Wow, the whole family's here tonight, huh? Yes, and unfortunately your father just can't say no to karaoke.
Well, I know how to take care of that.
Come on, Brenda.
Let's show them how it's done.
- Wild thing - Wild thing You make my heart sing See? - You make everything.
- You make everything Groovy - Wild thing - Wild thing I love this part.
- Wild thing, I think I love you - Wild thing, I think I love you But I wanna know for sure - Come on and hold me tight - Oh, baby I love you I'm sorry, he dragged me up there.
Forget about it.
Listen, I just tried to get ahold of Sarah.
She was really on the edge last night, Bren.
I'm worried about her.
I think I should go and see what's going on.
Isn't there anyone else who can help her? She's counting on me, Bren.
I can't let her down.
Fine, go.
I'd rather be here with you.
Look, just do what you have to do.
- Bren- - Dylan, just go, all right? I understand.
Where do you think he's going? I don't know, but it must be pretty important, he's just leaving her there.
Listen, if you need a ride, I can take you home.
Who the hell is that? Open the door.
Hi, Dylan.
Who the hell is that? That's my friend Dylan.
So, Dylan, feel like a beer? We're just having a couple ourselves.
Yeah, I can see that.
I can't believe you gave her a drink.
I didn't give her nothing.
She was drunk when I got here.
Is that true? Is it? Hey, if it's anybody's fault I'm drunk, it's yours.
I told you I couldn't do it alone, but you turned your back on me.
What was I supposed to do? I told you what to do.
You didn't listen to me.
No, you didn't listen to me.
I think you better go now.
Yeah, Mr.
Clean, time to go home.
Come with me, Sarah.
I'll help you.
She's not going anywhere.
I think that's up to her, isn't it? I don't think so.
No! Come on.
Get out.
Get out! I don't know how Sinatra does it.
Seventy-five and he still gets up there.
They're still outside, Jim.
So what? He's a nice guy.
Well, what do you think it means? Honey, they're just talking.
I know, but what about Dylan? They're just talking.
Thanks for taking me home.
I'd take you home any night of the week.
- Tim.
- What? I know.
You have a boyfriend.
I tell you what.
If you want, I'll get in my car, I'll drive away and I'll never look back.
Just say the word.
Well? I don't want you to do that.
I shouldn't be doing this.
Yes, you should.
Look, I'm sorry, I can't.
I don't mean to lead you on.
You're not.
Well Good night, then.
Do me a favour and think about it, will you, Brenda? I will.
- Promise? - I promise.
I like you, Brenda Walsh.
Hey, you coming to school? No.
Okay.
See you.
- Brandon, wait.
- What? I don't know, I'm depressed or confused I just don't feel like getting up out of bed.
What's wrong, Bren? - I kissed him.
- Tim? He drove me home and we were outside talking and it happened.
Well, it was just a kiss, Brenda.
No, it wasn't.
It was an awesome kiss.
Still, it was just a kiss.
Then why do I feel so guilty? You know, Bren, I think we're supposed to kiss a few different people before we settle down with one person for the rest of our lives.
I know.
I was just so sure that Dylan and I were meant for each other.
Maybe you are and maybe you aren't.
It's just, why did I do it? What's wrong with me? I liked it.
I liked him.
Bren, I think that's called being a human being.
To all the girls I've loved before Who travelled in and out my door I'm glad they came along So who's gonna tell him? Steve, you tell him.
He'll listen to you.
Oh, somebody's got to, this is getting painful.
So, ladies and gentlemen, what will it be? We gotta talk.
- Sounds serious.
- It is.
- What's up? - Would you listen to that? I owe a lot, I know It's pretty rank.
I can't take it anymore.
Wait a minute, wait a minute, I thought everybody liked karaoke.
Oh, yeah, we do.
Once is fine, but all day long? It's kind of like it's not ours anymore, you know? I know.
You gotta tell Nat, it's either karaoke or it's us.
The winds of change Continue blowing I'll talk to him.
And they just carry me away - Nat, we got a little problem.
- What is it? It's the karaoke.
I mean, it's fun and everything, but the Pit just isn't the same.
The people aren't the same.
You're telling me? I'm glad they came along My friends are saying they're gonna boycott unless we do something.
Well, they're right, Brandon.
Karaoke's great, but the Peach Pit, it's a juke joint.
Always was, always will be.
What about the money? You kids are the lifeblood of this place.
I know what side my bread's buttered.
- Well, I'm glad to hear you say that.
- But you have to do me a favour.
Anything, as long as you can get Julio to shut up.
Break the news to your dad.
Of all the girls I've loved before Good, and raise it up.
And down.
All right.
So, what are you guys doing tonight? Kelly, can you give me a minute? I need to talk to Tim.
Okay, lay it on me.
I'm sorry, but I don't think that we should be seeing each other.
Why not? Brenda, you're in high school, you should be going out with lots of guys.
I don't want to.
I wanna go out with Dylan.
But the guy just left you standing there last night.
That's not true.
Dylan wouldn't do that to me.
Someone was in trouble and they were counting on him.
Dylan's not the type of guy who would turn his back on someone he made a promise to.
I'm sorry.
I jumped to conclusions.
It's okay.
I guess I just really wanted to believe that Dylan was no good for you.
I just hope he appreciates what he's got.
Thanks.
Kelly, can you give me a second? I forgot something in my locker.
- Bye.
- Bye.
She dumped me.
Sorry, I tried to warn you.
What does she see in that guy, anyway? I mean, he's not that hot.
Trust me, they're meant for each other.
So do you have a boyfriend? No.
Hi, I'm Tim Matthews.
Kelly Taylor.
Nice to meet you.
I know the last few days have been hard on you, Bren.
But that girl Sarah, she needed me.
Dylan, I know who she is.
Brandon told me.
So you understand? Kind of.
Although I'm not quite sure why you didn't tell me who she was.
I mean, why did I have to hear it from Brandon? I don't know.
Maybe you should think about that.
Well, what about you and that Cardio Funk guy? - Dylan- - No, maybe you should think about that, Bren.
At least I was trying to help someone.
Look, AA is a big part of your life, but you heard what Ben said.
There is such a thing as getting too involved.
Yeah, well Didn't really look like Sarah wanted my help.
Not the last time I saw her.
She was curled up with her boyfriend and a bottle.
I'm sorry.
It's strange.
You know? I mean, I know the drill.
You can't save someone who doesn't wanna be saved.
Hell, Bren, for a long time, I was that person.
But when they're right there in front of you, drowning- It can break your heart.
I know.
Listen, I'm sorry I disappeared on you last night.
It's okay, I did a little drifting myself.
Do I need to worry about this guy? No, not anymore.
Dylan, I kissed him.
I'm sorry.
I feel terrible.
I mean, maybe I'm telling you so I'll feel better, I don't know.

Did it happen to you? Yeah.

We're gonna be okay.
Yeah, we are.

You make everything groovy I guess he'll go down singing.
