Forever Knight (1992) s02e24 Episode Script

Baby Baby

MAN: What have we got here today? The sandwiches fresh? [INDISTINCT CONVERSATION.]
And you know what he said to me? How's it going? He said [MAN SCREAMING.]
[THUMP.]
Hey, wait, wait, wait! What's going on? Did you see anything? Oh, my God! Look at that! [POLICE RADIO CHATTER.]
SCHANKE: Welcome to the wonderful world of hard hats.
You know the true meaning of "hat hair" when you take one of these things off.
Dispatch said it was a jumper.
Stan Erickson, steelworker.
Quitting whistle blew, he thought he'd take a shortcut.
Then why are we here? The guys who got to him first think they heard him say he was pushed.
They think or know? Well, they couldn't make it out because of the gurgling sound.
It was his dying breath.
Are they working around the clock here? Well, the plant's off-line while they get it up to standard or something.
Man, oh, man, this is the last way I'd want to go.
Three seconds seems like three hours, your whole life story plays out in full color.
Every mistake, every regret.
There's not a damn thing you could do about it.
Guess he discovered religion before he jumped.
KNIGHT: Chain's broken.
Any witnesses? Well, they heard him yell, that's all.
The word is, Erickson had a personality conflict with a coworker, a guy named Calvin Trilling, over there.
Now, Trilling says he was with his girlfriend.
She's around here somewhere.
[WHOOSH.]
She's a real looker, Nick.
I mean, this [WHOOSH.]
this woman has an ooh-la-la accent that just doesn't quit.
Nick? Why does he keep on doing this to me? Serena.
I thought it was you.
Why did you run? Because I knew it was you.
[.]
NARRATOR: He was brought across in 1228.
Preyed on humans for their blood.
Now, he wants to be mortal again To repay society for his sins To emerge from his world of darkness From his endless forever night.
[GROWLS.]
KNIGHT: Yours? Yeah, that's mine.
What was it doing in his hand? Best I figure, it was falling with him.
Look, I lost it last week on the job.
The Clyde probably found it and never told me.
He was a jerk.
You didn't get along? [SCOFFS.]
Anyone will tell you that.
Guy had an attitude.
So you killed him? I was with my girlfriend.
Serena.
We just came on shift.
SCHANKE: So, what sort of relationship do you have with Trilling? I work the night shift, he works the night shift.
We meet.
To do? Certain intimate, consensual things.
Would you like me to elaborate? No, no, no.
That's, uhokay.
And were you doing those consensual things when the victim fell? I assume we were.
You assume? Well, I was preoccupied, wasn't I? She's smart.
Trilling give you anything? Not really.
He's in Holding now.
What did you find? Multiple contusions, fractures, abrasions and a broken neck.
It was a bad fall, but that's it.
I can't give you anything to support homicide, not yet.
You sampled Trilling? Scary guy.
We're running a DNA PCR on what I got under the victim's fingernails.
Maybe we'll get a match.
Hi.
So, uh, what is it you do? I'm a welder, detective.
A welder? That surprise you? No, it's just that you're so Intelligent.
I didn't say that.
Feminine? Well, the work, it's kind of Pays 25 an hour.
Wow.
Twenty-five-- Really? Pays that much? I'm very good at my job.
I'll bet she is.
[.]
You know her.
I did.
How long ago? Come on, Nick, who is she? A mistake.
She's a mistake.
[COOL, LANGUID JAZZ PLAYING.]
[WOMAN SPEAKS FRENCH.]
[MAN SPEAKS FRENCH.]
Touch it.
Don't be afraid.
Isn't it fabulous, Serena? Can you feel it kicking? It's a miracle.
It's nature, Serena.
All you have to do is find a husband.
[CHUCKLES.]
Not dressed like that, she won't.
[LAUGHS.]
Did it ever occur to you, Armand, that that might be the idea? [LAUGHS.]
[LAUGHS.]
I need another drink.
Oui? [SIGHS.]
Oui, merci, Emile.
Already taken care of.
Oh.
Why would that gentleman? Look againmy friend.
My baby and me Just me and my baby KNIGHT: She's a strong-willed woman.
What's wrong with that? Who will do almost anything to achieve her goal.
Which is? I have no idea.
Trilling's your basic creep.
Assault, assault and battery, armed robbery, did time for that.
But with her as an alibi What about the cross? Trilling's story about losing it could be true.
There is a ton of bad blood between him and Erickson.
Hearsay.
It looks like a fall? It looks like a fall.
Then we send him home with a thank you and wait for the PCRs to come back.
Keep digging.
What could she possibly see in a man like that? Serena.
I thought he had a thing for her.
"Old friends.
" Yeah, right, Nick.
Serena, wait.
I told your partner everything I know.
Except the truth.
He seemed satisfied.
Can we go somewhere and talk? No, Nicolas.
My life works better without you.
NATALIE: For an old friend, she doesn't seem all that happy to see him.
Yeah, sometimes women are like that.
You have a right to be angry.
We don't want to get into that again, do we? Let me go! Hey! Back off! [SERENA SCOFFS.]
Don't you ever touch me again.
LACROIX: I'm thinking about pain tonight, about what hurts us the most.
Perhaps a gunshot wound.
A severed limb.
Or maybe emotional pain holds the deepest suffering of all.
Pride shattered.
[OVER RADIO.]
: Broken dream.
The lost love.
Oh, yes.
The most painful things in the world are those mistakes of the heart.
Those mistakes we all make in the name of love.
SERENA [SINGING WITH RECORD.]
: Through eternity Just me and my baby You have a beautiful voice for a man.
Does it bother you? [SNAPS LIGHTER.]
The way I dress? It just begs the question, why? Because if I dress like a woman, they'll treat me like one: a cloistered little flower who's supposed to laugh at their jokes and cook them dinner.
Besides, I like things in life That are not what they appear to be.
See the darkness clearly For instance, you.
You look like a conventional gentleman.
Yes.
But then, you're not.
You know that? I have investigated you.
Have you? You are a man of the night.
A free spirit.
A traveler.
More? They say marriage is not a possibility for you.
True.
Or the burden of a family.
Which is not to say I wouldn't like one.
But you can't.
You won't.
I have other concerns.
Je sais.
You are my perfect man, Nicolas.
I have been looking all over Paris just for you.
Through eternity Just me and my baby My baby and me [WILD ROCK MUSIC PLAYING.]
She knew what she was getting into.
Never.
I don't believe that.
What happened was my fault.
Nicolas, you can take the blame for everything if you like, but I'll tell you, she's no innocent.
She never was, not even before you.
She was a victim.
So was I.
So were you.
So is every vampire in the beginning.
Seduced by one thing or another, ignorant of the consequences.
But this is more than guilt, isn't it? She's with mortals.
Nicolas, we are surrounded by them.
You, of all people, should know that.
At your work and your friends.
I do it for a reason.
Maybe she does too.
Maybe she is also looking for answers.
You said that she shared your soul.
Why not your quest? I want eternity, Nicolas.
You can give it to me.
KNIGHT: That has nothing to do with it.
Are you certain? You're very quick to answer.
These mortals, would it be, perhaps, ah "amortal"? You're jealous.
There's a reason she's with him, Janette.
Yes, and assuming that he's still alive, it isn't sex.
Are you certain? About as certain as one can be.
What is it that you haven't told me about her? I have to see someone who knows, Janette.
I have to see Lacroix.
So did he tell you where he was going? Come on.
Since when does Nick ever tell me where he's going? And I was not about to ask.
You know, this is a classic Julie Dershowitz if I ever saw one.
A who? Julie Dershowitz.
I had a gigantic crush on her in sixth grade.
I used to write her notes, you know, and slip them into her locker through the ventilation slots.
[LAUGHS.]
I wrote some really embarrassing stuff.
Like? Poems, you know? You wrote poems to a girl? Natalie, I was in the sixth grade, for crying out loud.
Well, what did they say? I can't remember.
Oh, you remember, and you will tell me.
Let's see, "Roses are red" Better, better.
Prove it.
"No facet holds the light, "no fire burns quite as bright, "as the love I have for my jewel.
" That's sweet.
[SNORTS.]
That's embarrassing.
She found out it was me, she told the principal, he read every poem over the PA system during lunchtime in the cafeteria.
Talk about sheer humiliation.
I was in bed for a week.
I couldn't face anybody at school.
Believe me, I know exactly what Nick is going through.
Exactamundo.
Huh.
Do you think he loved her? Oh and they say women are sensitive.
Come on, it was like a neon sign emblazoned across his forehead.
Of course he loved her.
Probably still does.
[COMPUTER BEEPS.]
Hey, hey, hey.
What? Looks like we caught a break here.
Captain? Trilling was part of a medical study in prison.
They were looking for chromosomal aberrations in repeat offenders.
Oh, that's nice.
He's XYY.
He carries an extra Y chromosome.
Wait a minute, isn't that the sex chromosome? Yeah.
An extra Y is rare.
One in a million.
There are conflicting theories about what that results in, but there are some studies that indicate increased violent behavior is linked to the extra Y.
We can't arrest him for that.
No, but a chromosome workup is a hell of a lot faster than a DNA PCR.
You're saying? I'm saying that I could have him checked against the sample in 24 hours.
COHEN: Okay, do it.
[MACHINERY WHIRRING.]
Serena.
I'm getting tired of waiting.
I'm frustrated.
So you killed a man? TRILLING: Yeah, well, he doesn't matter.
[SERENA SIGHS.]
Oh, yes, he does.
He can keep us apart.
You'd better control yourself.
I want you.
[KISSING, BREATHING HEAVILY.]
[GASPS.]
I want your entirety, eternity.
You can give it to me.
I can't be responsible.
SERENA: I know.
Just a little less than 24 hours.
No, now.
There will be no blame, no guilt.
This is my choice.
[MOANING.]
I know exactly what I want, what I've always wanted.
[GROWLING.]
No.
I have to go.
[PANTING.]
Serena.
[GROWLING.]
[.]
My, but she does have you preoccupied.
This is perfectly dreadful.
Thank you for coming.
What did you ever see in her? The cut of her suit? Her mustache wax? The way she combs her hair? Her fire.
Her independence.
But isn't that exactly how she's behaving now? She's with a mortal man.
So Janette tells me.
Are you jealous? He's a criminal.
She's using him for something.
And you think I may know what that is? I think you have a good idea.
Could it be that you're finally beginning to appreciate my wisdom? Your knowledge.
Your age.
Lacroix, I am asking for your help.
And I'm enjoying it.
I really am.
Is it possible for her to mate with a mortal? That all depends upon what she's after.
Serena.
Nicolas.
I've given you what you wanted.
Yes.
Immortality.
It's our Eternity.
Our baby.
I dreamt the most horrible dream.
Your teeth.
Your eyes.
[GASPS.]
Serena, you knew.
It can't be.
You said you wanted eternity.
No LACROIX: As I recall, what Serena wanted then was a baby.
She said she wanted to be immortal.
[LAUGHS.]
Tripped by metaphor once again.
Poetry can be so deceiving.
The answer, Lacroix.
I'll answer you with another question.
Is that what she wants now? A baby? Is it possible? Apparently, baby-lust doesn't die with the mortal spirit.
In fact there are legends Tell me.
of special mortal men whose seed can make a female vampire conceive.
It has to be done at the peak of the full moon on the 31st of the month, or some such nonsense.
This is the 31st.
And a full moon.
Then you believe? Of course not.
The baby? Mortal.
And the man? Well, he dies, of course.
It goes without saying.
NATALIE: Well, my automatic response is that obviously mortals don't hold a monopoly on old wives' tales.
On the other hand, from a genetic point of view, the XYY gene would make Trilling special.
What are the traits? Well, the studies are inconclusive.
Some say that XYYs are violent.
Others say the opposite.
Whatever the case, they're a special breed, and there are a large number of them in prison.
However, they don't grow fur and bay at the moon.
I want to know if it is possible.
What? That he could make her pregnant? I don't know.
I mean I mean, what do you want to hear? That the XYY gene can make anything possible? You loved her.
Ah, it doesn't matter.
In her eyes, I betrayed her.
[TELEPHONE RINGING.]
Lambert.
SCHANKE: Ah, there you are.
I understand you being a little bit embarrassed to show your face in the squad room, but I'd appreciate it if you let me know where you'll be once in a while.
Ah-ah-- Okay, can you get the paperwork over here by tomorrow? Thanks.
It was the blood lab.
We have an XYY match.
Trilling's your guy.
Mr.
Calvin Trilling? We have a warrant for your arrest.
Schanke! I'm okay.
Go! Go! [WHOOSHING.]
[GRUNTS.]
Do you know who I am? [GRUNTS.]
Do you know what I am? Answer me.
No.
I am your savior.
I'm the one who's going to save your miserable soul.
[POLICE RADIO CHATTER.]
[.]
Serena.
I was about to take the elevator, but I thought this was so much more Dramatic? Appropriate.
Like a good way to remind you that I have powers of my own.
Well, I don't need reminding.
Then perhaps I should come in? Sorry to take you away from your precious cops and robbers, but we must talk.
Did you really drag this around with you? There are memories.
Some I'd rather forget.
Yes.
Why dredge up the past? I can't undo it, Serena.
I cannot give you back what I took from you.
Then please don't try and take any more.
I'm not.
You had no business arresting Trilling.
We do that fairly often: arrest suspects for murder.
No, you arrested him because you're jealous.
His chromosomes matched those we found on the victim.
XYY.
They're very rare.
Does that mean anything to you? You stay the hell out of my business.
You'll kill him.
That's sweet.
You murder me, then you lecture me on ethics.
You can't sacrifice his life because you want a child.
Do you think this is all about having a baby? What for, Nick? The stretch marks or the early mornings? Or to make up for the ones I didn't have with you? The baby is the bonus, Nicolas.
If I can get pregnant, I will also become mortal.
You didn't know? It is part of the legend.
When you think about it, there's no other way for the seed to grow.
But that could be all it is, a legend.
To have a child and live a life in the sun, to grow old and die like I'm supposed to, isn't that worth taking the chance that maybe it is true? Is it worth a life? He's a murderer, a violent scum.
The world won't lose anything.
That's not for you to decide.
Are you telling me you wouldn't sacrifice another human to regain your own mortality? I know you better than that.
We have laws, Serena.
Thanks to you.
They aren't mine.
You stay out of this, Nicolas.
For you, of all people, have no right to stop me.
No right at all.
You guys got nothing on me! Nothing, you hear me? Trap! Trap, do you hear me? Trap! Hey, look, you do that one more time, I'm gonna take away your shoes.
Oh, yeah, you're really scaring me, fat man.
Uh, excuse me, ma'am, but, uh these holding cells are off limits for anybody except-- I need to see your prisoner.
I'm sorry, I'm afraid you can't do that, so why don't you just turn around? [HEART BEATING.]
Who the hell are you? I am the chief of police.
[HEART BEATING.]
You're the chief of police? Yes, I am.
[HEART BEATING.]
What brings you down here, sir? [HEART BEATING.]
I came to take your prisoner.
[HEART BEATING.]
Oh.
Of course.
What the hell did you do to him? Come on, sweetheart.
It's a full moon tonight.
LACROIX: The air is fragrant.
The night is soft.
The moonis full on such a night as this.
Tonight is a night for romance, mes amis.
Ce soir c'est pour l'amour.
Look, just check, will you? I don't need to check.
I checked when I got in.
He's in lockup.
No one's gone in, no one's come out.
The guy is not gonna disappear, Nick.
It would make me feel better, all right? It'll make me feel like an idiot.
But you're going to do it for me.
[SIGHS.]
But I'm gonna do it for you.
How soon do you get in? Soon.
All right.
[TIRES SQUEALING.]
Hey, Mandrake.
I know this is going to sound like overkill, but Nick wants me to-- What the hell are you doing in there? Hey, where's Trilling? Well, he was kicking at the cell bars, you know, and I I told him to knock it off or I was gonna make him take off his shoes, and And then he gave me some lip, and then I I can't remember a damn thing.
Maybe you were hit over the head? I don't know.
I I don't think so.
Where there any visitors? Yeah, uh, Schanke came in to check at the start of his watch.
And then there was there was just the chief.
The chief? Which chief? Wellthe police chief.
The chief of police? Yes, ma'am.
Is this your idea of a joke, Mandrake? Oh, no, ma'am, no.
You're telling me that the chief of police showed up in Holding? Yeah.
What did he do there? Well I don't know.
I don't have any idea.
The next thing I remember, I'm in the cell and Trilling is gone.
That'll be all, sergeant.
Yes, ma'am.
[COHEN SIGHS.]
Any theories, gentlemen? I don't know, maybe Trilling hypnotized him or something.
MAN: Trilling's not in the building, Captain.
Thanks, Lipinski.
How the hell did he get out? Hey, Nick, you had a feeling he might be gone.
If you know something, share it.
Just that he's got to be with Serena.
[SIGHS.]
Police are gonna be all over us, babe.
Where are we going? Higher than high, at the peak of the fire, under the light of a perfectly full moon.
KNIGHT: Do you have her address? Yeah, basement apartment near Peter and King.
Yeah, well, she won't be there.
Then why am I going? To see if there's anything that'll tell us where she is.
But where are you gonna be? Yeah.
Well, what's that in Eastern daylight time? MAN: Full moon at 11:35 p.
m.
Thank you.
Who was that? The Royal Observatory.
We've got 45 minutes to find them.
Forty-five minutes to what? Knight! LACROIX: In 31 minutes, the moon will be perfectly full.
The night will be at its absolute brightest, as close to day as it ever becomes.
How do you feel about the moon? About how it translates the light of the sun? [DOOR OPENS.]
Do you believe in magic? [SWITCH CLICKS.]
You knew, didn't you? I was simply protecting you, Nicholas.
I mean, it drips with irony, doesn't it? That your mistake, your victim, can achieve the mortality that you have sought for so long, and in a way that you have no hope of repeating? [LAUGHS.]
I mean, nature's so unkind.
Sosexist.
Where are they? I don't know, and it shouldn't concern you.
She's going to kill him.
Of course she is.
And possibly regain the mortality that you took from her.
Your mistake will be rectified.
Your silly guilt will be relieved.
She's doing you a favor, and in 30 minutes, it'll all be over.
Give her what she wants.
KNIGHT: A child.
Serena, I thought you wanted-- What you have? An endless life of darkness? Why would I want that? I wanted my freedom.
My independence.
Why would I want to adopt your life any more than any other man's? Why would I want to adopt this death? I thought you knew.
No.
I knew you You were a man who loved the night.
I love the day.
I knew you were a man who preferred to be alone, who would have let me raise our child in peace, but this Oh, God.
Please Take it back.
Undo what you did.
Please.
I need to know the legend, Lacroix.
[CHUCKLES.]
I do believe you enjoy torturing yourself.
I'm asking for your help.
And it's becoming a bad habit.
Please.
[SIGHS.]
It's one of those Celtic monstrosities, abad poem.
I don't remember all of it.
It starts something about a man with "power beyond control," blah, blah, blah, "union of the mortal soul.
" Where? Legends don't give zip codes.
It has to happen "Higher than high, "at the peak of the fire, by the light of a perfectly full moon.
" Which is in 28 minutes.
That's all I can recall, Nicholas.
End of story.
"Higher than high, "at the peak of the fire, under the light of a perfectly full moon.
" [DOOR OPENS.]
[CHUCKLES.]
Not even a thank you.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
[.]
I have waited so long.
[BREATHING HEAVILY.]
So we're gonna do it here? Close.
Don't be nervous.
I want this to be very, very good.
Very, very hot.
So, what have you got up your sleeve now, huh? TRILLING: Oh, hell.
You are a kinky one.
[MOANS.]
Absolutely zip.
Although I will tell you, this woman does not subscribe to House & Garden.
This place feels like a crypt.
Anything there? KNIGHT: Well, it's just that the foreman's angry she didn't show up for her shift.
We've got about 10 minutes.
Ah, she chills her red wine.
Good French stuff too.
I thought this was it, "higher than high.
" What was that? "Higher than high.
" Does that mean anything to you? Sounds like an old Hendrix lyric.
Is there anything there that that might describe? Maybe a couple of junkies I saw outside.
Nick, how would the world's tallest freestanding tower do? LACROIX: Just five minutes left.
Serena, look, we can't go up there.
It's closed.
Just hold me.
Hold me tight.
Kiss me and don't let go.
Five minutes until the peak.
You're getting warm.
[HEAVY BREATHING.]
How did we get here? It doesn't matter.
It's been so long.
Yes.
Hurry.
Your eyes Are for you, lover.
Just for you.
Serena! [BREATHING HEAVILY.]
Let him go.
What is it that makes his life more important than mine? He-- He's a murderer.
And aren't you? I'm only here because of you.
Locked in this darkness because of you.
Driven to this pathetic desperation, this thing I abhor, because of you.
How? How can you deny me, Nicolas? How can you deny me my mortality again? Have you completely lost your humanity? It's almost time.
Please find it in your heart to give me my life back.
This is my only chance.
It must be now.
Undo what you did.
Please Please.
[GROWLS.]
Come on, come on, come on, come on! We gotta get inside, huh? Can't get the lock open? What's wrong with you? And you wonder why you're not a detective.
All right, get a security guard.
Gotta get an elevator working.
Keep a look out for Knight.
[.]
[MOANING.]
[MOANING.]
Serena? Serena, are you all right? Look at me.
[SOBS.]
What have I done? LACROIX: They say a full moon distorts our perceptions.
Clouds our judgment.
Makes fools of us all.
Was that the way it was with you too, my lovers? Did the moonbeams blind you to the truth? It's not your fault.
It was only a legend.
Sometimes in our desperation we'll believe anything.
We'll do anything.
I'm sorry.
No.
It's not your fault, Serena.
It's mine.
[SIRENS WAILING.]
You must go now.
I'll take care of it.
No.
I don't want your help.
I don't want anything from you ever again.
[SIRENS WAILING.]
[WHOOSHING.]
[CLEARS THROAT.]
Any security guard? No, huh? Great.
Now we'll never get up there.
Nick? Nick? W-were you up there? [GRUNTING.]
Anybody else? Did you find anything? Only what an easily led fool I can be.
If they were ever up there, Schank they've gone now.
SCHANKE: Well, they were there.
We know they were there, because we found her car parked near the tower.
Their prints were all over it.
Okay, so we assume by some sort of magic, she was able to get him out of here, drive him to the CN Tower, and then they just disappeared? Well, we're thinking train.
The station's right there.
That doesn't explain what happened, Schanke.
I am in search of an overall explanation.
I know, captain.
I couldmake something up.
What does your partner think? Well, my partner and I really haven't discussed it.
Is this gonna go on all night? I ask, you don't quite answer? [LAUGHS.]
You're doing it again.
Doing what, captain? [SIGHS.]
Get some sleep, detective.
I think you need it.
Just me and my baby My baby and me [GLASSES CLINKING.]
Just me and baby Baby and me [.]
