Came from Marge Atkins.

Heaven knows why they employ her.
I'm sure she's got her good points.
Can't think what.
Anyhow
..cause of death
is confirmed as drowning.
Toxicology report shows
his PEth test looks quite high,
maybe two or three times

Water in lungs showing traces
of legionella and
..well, lots of things
I can't pronounce.
Not surprising, with what they
dump in the rivers these days.
Mostly bacterioplankton, I suspect.
Well, that's easy for you to say.
Erm, tiny waterborne organisms.
So if the lab confirmed he was drunk
and he did drown in the river,
that pretty much confirms
it was an accident, doesn't it?
Yes. So, are we done?
Almost.
There's still a couple of questions
I'd like to know the answers to.
Such as?
Such as why would a man
described as being very
particular about his clothes,
who even argued with his partner
about how his clothes were placed,
be found wearing odd socks? Hmm?
And if the fitness tracker was right
and showed his heart
stopped beating at 1:06am,
how could he be driving his car
towards Mousetone
almost 20 minutes later?
And thirdly,
why would a man
who we know to be outspoken
in his condemnation of drink-driving
get behind the wheel of a car,
knowing himself to be drunk?
But none of that changes the fact
that he was definitely drunk,
definitely driving the car
and definitely crashed
in the river and drowned.
Esther? Er, do you think you might
be able to help me?
I seem to have handcuffed

You're the one that handcuffed yourself.
Yes, I know, but I haven't used
handcuffs since police training.
Oh, ma'am! Er, I was just going to, er,
go see a stolen sheep, ma'am.
Well, not see it, because it's stolen.
With some friends.
Other sheep.
That's why they called us.
Not the sheep.
Er, Mr Mr O'Brien, the farmer man.
Well, don't let me hold you up.
Don't worry.
No, I'm not taking my time.
I'm actually trying to get it off you.
If you could just stay with me
Afternoon, ma'am. Inspector.
Ah, ma'am!
I've just had a conversation
with Councillor Donalan.
Oh?
To say he was furious would be
somewhat of an understatement.
What exactly did you say to him?
We simply asked him
a few pertinent questions.
He said he felt like he was being held
personally responsible
for his partner's death.
Well, erm, we asked him
for his account of the events
leading to Niall Palmer
leaving his house, that's all.
He said your manner
was offhand, accusatory
and at times downright rude.
Well, I'm sorry to hear that.
It wasn't intended.
Oh, we're, erm, having
a bit of a move around.
Er, different lighting.
Yeah!
Do you have the slightest shred
of evidence that Mr Palmer
is anything but a victim
of a tragic accident?
No, ma'am.
Toxicology report?
Yes, er, shows he was almost three
times over the drink-driving limit.
And the car he was known to be driving
was pulled out of the river with him
in it?
Yes, it was. Cause of death
confirmed as drowning?
Yes. And do you have
anything whatsoever to suggest
that Councillor Donalan
is in any way responsible
for his partner's death?
Erm, no, ma'am.
Inspector Tremayne is happy
that this was an accident?
It would appear so, yes.
So, despite all the evidence
pointing to an RTC,
tragic though it is,
you have managed
to rub everyone on the Cornish

that he is threatening

So, I went on Niall Palmer's
social media,
and one of his good friends
on there seems to be
someone called Paul Cresswell.
I've just spoken to him,
and it turns out he's not
a fan of Arthur Donalan.
Oh. He said he was
controlling, manipulative
and that his relationship
with Niall is toxic.
He said he thought that the age
difference was a factor,
that Donalan bullied Niall.
More telling is the fact
that he believes
Niall had finally had enough,
that he was going to tell
Donalan he wanted a break.
Do you think that's what
they argued about?
Well, I believe that
more than the clothes thing.
Is that him?
Er, yeah. It's a birthday party
Paul threw for Niall in November.

Archie? He's been away travelling,

So you said you'd help out.
Are you mad?

No, because you're kind and of

What do you want?
Well, erm evidence, really.
Access to any evidence

Mr Palmer's partner, Arthur Donalan,
saw him leave in his car, presumably?
We've already spoken to Mr Donalan.
Well, we'd like to speak to him again.
What for?
To, erm, ask him some questions.
What sort of questions?
Well, I won't really know
till I get there.
Hi. Scones, two white coffees, a latte

So let's get down to it,

Who's in charge?
I don't mind. I mean, I'm very
happy for you to be in charge,
if that's what you'd like.
What's the catch?
No catch.
And if you find anything,
you'll report back to me?
Absolutely.
OK.
No, no, no, no, no.
Finish your, er your milk,
and I'll look forward to your report.
Did you really just put him in charge?
Yes.
Annoying as he may be, Sergeant,
hopefully, he'll be busy
buffing his buttons
and we can find out what really
happened to Niall Palmer.
I want to know where they go,
who they're talking to.
Well, aren't they going
to report to us anyway?
Ah, he's a bit weird. I don't trust him.

Yes?
Mr Donalan, my name is
Detective Inspector Goodman.
This is Detective Sergeant Williams.
We'd like to talk to you about
what happened last night.
Well, I already spoke to DI Tremayne.
We're from Shipton Abbott.
Well what do you want?
As I said, a few more questions.
And if I haven't got time?
Oh, we could come back.
I've got things to do.
It'll have to be quick.
Well?
Well, we'd just like you
to run through the events
of last night, if you can.
You mean, you want me to repeat
everything I've already
told your colleagues?
If it's no trouble.
Niall and I had dinner here last night.
And we understand
you were both drinking.
A rather nice Grenache.
And after dinner?
I opened up a bottle of champagne
and we moved outside.
It was a warm night.
Seemed a shame to waste it.
I see you like your detectives.
Some.
Who's your favourite?
Holmes, of course.
Maigret. I have a particular
weakness for Philip Marlowe.
An eclectic mix.
Are we talking about Niall
or my taste in books?
I'm sorry.
So you, erm
..you were, er you were
in the garden?
Yes. Er, what time was this?
No idea.
After midnight.
And, erm, at some point,
you had a disagreement?
Can I ask what about?
I can't recall exactly.
You can't recall what
you and your partner
were arguing about the night he died?
He stays occasionally,
so he leaves some clothes here,
and I'd moved them.
It escalated from there,
all got a bit personal,
and he stormed off.
I tried to stop him,
but he wouldn't listen.
You saw him get into the car?
Yes. Time?
Does it matter? Yes.
I don't know exactly.
If it helps, the call you made to
the emergency services was 1:25am.
Fine. Well, it was just
before that, then, wasn't it?
He sped off down the drive,
and that was the last I saw of him.
And you called the emergency
services the moment he left?
As I explained to your colleagues,
he had been drinking heavily,
and I was worried he might
kill himself or someone else.
Were you aware of Mr Palmer's
views on drink-driving?
Well, I knew he
disapproved of it, yes.
But he was off his face.
It hardly seemed like
the time to remind him.
No? I'd have thought
it was the perfect time.
Shipton Abbott.
So your chief super would be
..Charlie Woods.
Yes.
Perhaps I should call her and find
out why I'm being interrogated.
Well, it's hardly
an interrogation, Mr Donalan.
We're simply trying
to establish Niall's movements.
And we have done that.
Shall I repeat it for you?
We had dinner, argued, and he left.
Or am I missing something?
He's a bundle of fun.
And a detective aficionado, to boot.
You think he's lying?
Yes, I do.
But he can't be involved.
He was the one who made
the call to the emergency
services after Niall left,
and we saw Niall in the car alone.
As alibis go, it's watertight.
All true. Then why was
he wearing odd socks?
And why did his fitness tracker say
his heart stopped at 1:06?
You know, I've only read one
Philip Marlowe novel,
while I was at uni.
Any good?
It was about a series of murders,
each one made to look like an accident.

Oh, we hardly see each other as it is.
Well, that is what happens

No, I'm serious.
I worry that we don't spend

Pretty much sorted.
Oh, I've had Inspector Tremayne

We've had stuff back from
the lab while you were out.
Came from Marge Atkins.
She's office support
at Polmarron Station.
Mad as a bag of fruit bats.
Heaven knows why they employ her.
I'm sure she's got her good points.
Can't think what.
Anyhow
..cause of death
is confirmed as drowning.
Toxicology report shows
his PEth test looks quite high,
maybe two or three times
over the alcohol driving limit.
Water in lungs showing traces
of legionella and
..well, lots of things
I can't pronounce.
Not surprising, with what they
dump in the rivers these days.
Mostly bacterioplankton, I suspect.
Well, that's easy for you to say.
Erm, tiny waterborne organisms.
So if the lab confirmed he was drunk
and he did drown in the river,
that pretty much confirms
it was an accident, doesn't it?
Yes. So, are we done?
Almost.
There's still a couple of questions
I'd like to know the answers to.
Such as?
Such as why would a man
described as being very
particular about his clothes,
who even argued with his partner
about how his clothes were placed,
be found wearing odd socks? Hmm?
And if the fitness tracker was right
and showed his heart
stopped beating at 1:06am,
how could he be driving his car
towards Mousetone
almost 20 minutes later?
And thirdly,
why would a man
who we know to be outspoken
in his condemnation of drink-driving
get behind the wheel of a car,
knowing himself to be drunk?
But none of that changes the fact
that he was definitely drunk,
definitely driving the car
and definitely crashed
in the river and drowned.
Esther? Er, do you think you might
be able to help me?
I seem to have handcuffed
myself to a desk lamp.
I didn't realise these things
locked automatically.
It's been a while since
I've arrested anybody!
I might have a key
..I might not.
Oh, ow! I'm looking
Won't be long.
If you could just
Don't tighten them.
If you tighten them
Right, I'll be off, then.
You're the one that handcuffed yourself.
Yes, I know, but I haven't used
handcuffs since police training.
Oh, ma'am! Er, I was just going to, er,
go see a stolen sheep, ma'am.
Well, not see it, because it's stolen.
With some friends.
Other sheep.
That's why they called us.
Not the sheep.
Er, Mr Mr O'Brien, the farmer man.
Well, don't let me hold you up.
Don't worry.
No, I'm not taking my time.
I'm actually trying to get it off you.
If you could just stay with me
Afternoon, ma'am. Inspector.
Ah, ma'am!
I've just had a conversation
with Councillor Donalan.
Oh?
To say he was furious would be
somewhat of an understatement.
What exactly did you say to him?
We simply asked him
a few pertinent questions.
He said he felt like he was being held
personally responsible
for his partner's death.
Well, erm, we asked him
for his account of the events
leading to Niall Palmer
leaving his house, that's all.
He said your manner
was offhand, accusatory
and at times downright rude.
Well, I'm sorry to hear that.
It wasn't intended.
Oh, we're, erm, having
a bit of a move around.
Er, different lighting.
Yeah!
Do you have the slightest shred
of evidence that Mr Palmer
is anything but a victim
of a tragic accident?
No, ma'am.
Toxicology report?
Yes, er, shows he was almost three
times over the drink-driving limit.
And the car he was known to be driving
was pulled out of the river with him
in it?
Yes, it was. Cause of death
confirmed as drowning?
Yes. And do you have
anything whatsoever to suggest
that Councillor Donalan
is in any way responsible
for his partner's death?
Erm, no, ma'am.
Inspector Tremayne is happy
that this was an accident?
It would appear so, yes.
So, despite all the evidence
pointing to an RTC,
tragic though it is,
you have managed
to rub everyone on the Cornish
police team up the wrong way
and upset Councillor Donalan
to the point
that he is threatening
to report us to the IOPC.
Can you give me one credible reason
why you think this wasn't an accident?
We
No, ma'am.
Then I suggest you wrap this up
and you do something
more deserving of your time
..and mine!
Is that understood?
Yes, ma'am. Good.
If I could just have until
the end of the day? Please?
A few loose ends.
Close of play today.
Do I make myself clear?
Absolutely.

I'll be in touch.

So, I went on Niall Palmer's
social media,
and one of his good friends
on there seems to be
someone called Paul Cresswell.
I've just spoken to him,
and it turns out he's not
a fan of Arthur Donalan.
Oh. He said he was
controlling, manipulative
and that his relationship
with Niall is toxic.
He said he thought that the age
difference was a factor,
that Donalan bullied Niall.
More telling is the fact
that he believes
Niall had finally had enough,
that he was going to tell
Donalan he wanted a break.
Do you think that's what
they argued about?
Well, I believe that
more than the clothes thing.
Is that him?
Er, yeah. It's a birthday party
Paul threw for Niall in November.
RAUCOUS SHOUTING

Archie? He's been away travelling,
and now he's back to launch a new wine,
and his caterers have just let him down.
So you said you'd help out.
Are you mad?
No. Yes.
Which?
No, because you're kind and of
course you said you'd help out
if you could. And, yes, because
I was looking forward to our date.
Can we reschedule?
Yes, we could.

I didn't think anything of it!
But, as you quite rightly said,
Esther, who knows
what's being pumped into
our rivers these days? But
But it's also the type of thing you
would expect to find
in standing water,
in a tank or a pond
..or a hot tub.
90 CFU per millilitre.
Is that bad?
Too high for a river.
But not for a hot tub?
No, the concentration
would be much higher.
So he inhaled some of the water
from the hot tub.
But how does that help us?
Because if that's the water
that was in his lungs,
could that be the water that killed him?
No, wait. But how? How? How?
We saw him driving away.

Why would a man particular

Because he didn't dress himself.
Arthur Donalan said
they began arguing.

And what if it then turned to violence?
His heart raced
as he fought for his life
..and then stopped.
1:06?
Whether he meant
to take his life is unclear.
Only he knows that.
But it's the only possible
thing that makes sense.
His heart stopped at 1:06,
just as his fitness tracker said.
What threw us off the scent
was that his body was found
in the river, so we simply accepted
that's where he must have drowned.
Margo, get a unit to take a sample
of the water in Arthur Donalan's hot tub
and get it cross-checked with the sample
found in Niall Palmer's lungs.
But if he was already dead,
then how did he drive his car
past the speed camera?
Because, Kelby, like
everything else in this case,
nothing is what it seems.
No doubt Donalan was distraught
by what he'd done,
but he had to think quickly.
He knew he needed to dress him
and get him away from the house.
