Ghostwriter (2019) s03e02 Episode Script

Ghost of Oz, Part 2

So Oliver Ramos died last week,
and the first thing he decided to do
when he became a ghost
was introduce the three of us
to fictional characters?
That's what it seems like.
What do we tell the others?
- The truth.
- Which part?
That they're from a book?
That there isn't a wizard?
That a ghost released them
into the real world
where nobody else can see them but us?
When you put it that way,
maybe we should just let them
keep thinking we're off to see
The wizard. The wizard!
Behold the Eloquent Peasant,
or as I like to call it, the EP.
This ancient Egyptian story
is one of the oldest ever to be found
Is that the wizard?
He doesn't look very wizard-y.
I don't know.
and it's right here
at our very own university library.
Lion, Scarecrow,
can I talk to you out in the hall?
intricate morality tale.
The EP underscores
the importance of storytelling
I know that guy.
So do I.
Me too.
But ultimately, the Eloquent Peasant
comes down to one word
justice.
Our peasant spoke the truth,
courageously and eloquently,
in the face of this unfairness.
I can't believe it.
We used to sit next to each other
at Village Books.
He drank iced mochas with extra ice
and he used to hog the plug for hours.
He always knew
I was working on my magic tricks,
and one day he was nice enough to
- Pick a card.
- Okay, sure.
Hmm, eight of spades?
Yes! Wow. Smart.
I remember I was eating a
yogurt parfait when Oliver dropped his.
- Oh, I love those.
- So did Oliver.
Here, have mine.
You're giving me your yogurt?
It's okay, really.
I-I live upstairs,
and I can get another snack.
Wow. Okay, thanks.
You know, you've got a big heart.
I met Oliver at a dinner party my
mom threw for the
archaeology department.
It was really boring, so I went
into the other room to play a game.
You hate these dinners too?
Maybe a little.
Oh, man, I used to
play this all the time.
Whoa. Gutsy move.
Nia. There you are.
- I wanna introduce you to a few people.
- Sure.
Go for it.
Thanks.
He was a nice guy,
but he was actually a terrible player.
He used all my lives.
It's so odd.
We knew Oliver, but barely.
Why did he choose us?
Doesn't make any sense.
Well, i it kind of does.
Oliver told me I have heart.
He told Charli she was smart,
like a brain.
And he called Nia gutsy, which is
the same as saying she has courage.
Like The Wizard of Oz.
I'm telling you, I don't trust them.
Why not? They're totally chill.
Charli made me pancakes.
I'll tell you why.
For starters,
this building with the yellow floor
is nothing like the road we were on.
Good point.
Maybe Emerald City hasn't gotten around
to upgrading this part of the road yet.
You're too gullible, Lion.
Where's Dorothy?
And please, there's no way
the guy in the video is the wizard.
Um, if I may, I think you're being
too suspicious, Tin Girl.
Fine. But I better see
some real wizard stuff and soon.
That wizard enough for ya?
It's a start.
It's a map of the university.
It's pointing at the library.
Now it's on the security office.
Sports center.
I think maybe we're supposed to go
to those places.
There's three of us who need to talk to
the wizard and three
locations. Let's go.
Do you think I'll find my courage
at one of these places?
'Cause, uh, I really need some.
This mystery stuff is suddenly
making me very nervous.
Let's stop discussing everything.
We don't have time.
The witch is somewhere out there
with her winged monkeys.
Where is my brain?
Well, Oliver was here all the time.
I mean, he practically lived
in the archive room.
It's so sad.
Why you asking me about him?
Oh, uh, I'm writing an article on him
- for my school paper.
- Oh.
Do you remember the
last time you saw him?
A few days before he died, I guess.
He wanted me to put a book
on hold for him.
- Book?
- Mm-hmm.
Would you happen to have it?
Yeah. Actually, it's still here.
I'll just take a quick pic.
"The World's Smartest
Criminal Masterminds."
Maybe I'll read it one day.
Charli.
Charli!
- I told you, don't touch anything.
- Who are you talking to?
Oh, uh, imaginary friend.
Come on. Let's go.
Yeah, I knew Oliver.
He worked late, and, well, he was
always losing his swipe card. Why?
Oh, I'm just doing an interview
about him for my school paper.
And as a security guard,
I thought you might know him.
I liked the guy. He was a little
paranoid about security though.
He used to come around a lot.
I didn't mind,
he always brought a treat for Cowboy.
Hurry up. There's no heart here.
Those flying monkeys could be anywhere.
What do you mean he was paranoid?
He was always asking questions about
the security cameras around campus.
I drew the line at showing him
the old security footage though.
This is a waste of time.
Come on.
You okay?
Yes. Fine. Thank you.
I liked Oliver a lot.
I saw him all the time.
I was actually training him for a
big climb he was planning in Egypt,
some kind of family trip.
Right here, actually.
He was making great strides too,
until he suddenly just stopped coming.
Really?
I was surprised.
He was obsessed with getting in shape.
He came in five days a week.
Of course, if I had known
about his heart condition,
I wouldn't have let
him work out so hard.
Do you know why he stopped coming?
He said things had gotten crazy
and he didn't have time.
Then he told me when he was done
with whatever he was working on,
it would be so huge that the university
would have to name a building after him.
- Excuse me.
- Thank you.
Let's go.
Uh, if we're done solving
the mystery by 8:30,
I'd love to swing by
and take a yoga class.
My specialty is lion's pose.
Why would a Egyptologist read a book
on criminal masterminds?
Or be so interested in campus security?
Sounds to me
like he was solving some sort of crime.
You gotta watch this!
The wizard is
The wizard is such an amazing speaker.
I have no idea what he's saying,
but I like it.
Well, whatever it is, it must be big.
He told the trainer that the
university would be so impressed,
they'd have to name
a building after him.
Ooh! Yes! Extra coins.
I got extra coins.
What does any of this have to do with
The Wizard of Oz or these characters?
Beats me.
And what about the video?
It was something
about the Eloquent Peasant.
My mom mentioned that to me
the other night.
It's some sort of ancient document
she's giving back to a museum in Egypt.
It must be connected.
Hey, Samir. Where is the Tin Girl?
She was right here.
What are you doing?
I found it in the kitchen.
Yes, it's it's for pots and pans.
Look at the mess you made.
What? You took a shower.
I can't get clean too?
Samir?
Please, just move.
I was thinking since Idris's nightmares
have stopped thanks to you,
maybe the two of you
could do something special tomorrow.
Sure. I can take him to the park.
Play some soccer.
Perfect. You're a good big brother.
End of story, right?
Wrong.
Khun-Anup doesn't stay quiet.
He declares
the landowner's actions unfair,
and for the next ten days
What is he trying to tell us?
There must be some hidden meaning
in this video.
Do you think it's something bad,
like "don't help the lion"?
Because I've dealt with that before.
Growing up, one of the cubs
in the den was very mean to me.
Relax, it's not about you.
Hey, just checking in.
You barely touched your dinner.
Oh. Yeah, my stomach's a little off.
But don't worry. I'll be fine.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah, I just have a lot of homework.
Okay then. Don't stay up too late.
You know, she's right.
You were acting strange at dinner.
Maybe it's because
an invisible lion was sitting beside me.
I don't think so.
Is it because
that woman accused you of stealing?
All right, time's up.
My turn.
Our peasant spoke the truth,
courageously and eloquently,
in the face of this unfairness.
How many times are you gonna watch that?
He's the wizard. He's a smart guy,
and maybe if I keep listening to him,
I'll grow a brain.
Plus, I like the way he says "eloquent."
Very classy.
"Eloquent."
Really, Charli? I know you're jealous
I got the bigger room, but grow up!
What are you talking about?
My clothes. I found them outside.
You threw them out the window.
What? I did not.
If you didn't, then who did?
Now you have more space
for your magic stuff. You're welcome.
Hello?
You're right, Syd. It was stupid, uh
I'm sorry.
Feel free to wash my clothes.
I know you were only trying to help,
but that wasn't the smartest idea.
Which isn't your fault,
since you don't have a brain and all.
Hey, look.
I'm not interested.
Just turn that off already.
But I see something.
The little guy next to the pointy thing.
You mean the chess pieces?
I saw one just like it in the library.
Huh.
Three locations, three chess pieces.
And if that one is
in the library then
Scarecrow!
I take back what I
said. You're brilliant.
I am?
Chess pieces?
What does that have to do with my heart?
The wizard works in mysterious ways.
All right. Let's go!
Can't go tonight. Tomorrow.
Actually, wait. I can't go tomorrow.
You heard my dad.
I have to babysit my brother.
So bring him along.
Kids love hanging out with their older,
much cooler brother.
- True, but I don't know.
- It won't be long.
And you could go to the park after.
Come on. It's a win-win.
I guess it wouldn't hurt.
You distract the librarian,
and I'll grab the chess piece.
What?
You distract the librarian,
and I'll grab the chess piece.
You're not the one
who needs to be quiet.
Oh, right. Just confirming
that you distract the librarian,
and I grab the chess piece?
Yes.
Last time I was here,
I think I left my scarf.
Would it be possible
for me to check the lost and found?
Feel free to have a look.
No chess piece?
Well, it has to be
somewhere in this room.
Is that dog looking at me?
I thought no one but you
and your friends could see me.
- Samir!
- Cowboy!
It's okay. It's okay.
Dog's not gonna hurt you. It's okay.
Let's have a seat. It's okay.
You okay, Idris? It's okay. It's okay.
It's okay.
We looked everywhere.
Where would you hide
a chess piece in a gym?
Mmm, I wouldn't.
There! The trainer said that Oliver
had been using the rock-climbing wall.
Maybe he hid it at the top.
Well, uh, good luck.
Wait! Where are you going?
Oh, I Just gonna
do a little stretching.
Don't look too hard.
Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!
I need you to climb up there
and take a look.
Why me?
Because you're a giant lion
nobody can see.
It'll take you three seconds to get up.
Uh no. I am terrified of heights.
Good afternoon.
Not sure if you remember me.
I do.
Right. Well, uh, hi again.
Anyways, I was wondering
if you could look up a book for me?
- Name?
- Uh
It's called
The Girl in the Big Red Glasses.
Oh, I'm
not familiar with that title, but
Charli, look. I got it.
Come on. Let's go.
Excuse me?
Sorry. Take your time.
Thank you.
Oh, uh
I just realized I have that book
at home. Uh Sorry about that.
The dog was going to bite me.
No, it was going to bite me.
I know that was scary.
Maybe the dog was scared too,
and that's why he barked.
Come on, Idris. Let's go to the park.
Samir, you can't just leave.
We need to find the chess piece.
I'm really sorry about Cowboy.
He never barks.
Would you like to give him a treat?
No, thank you.
I'll show you how sweet he really is.
See? He's not so bad.
Samir, look. It was in the dog's bed.
Of course. He said,
"Oliver always brought the dog treats."
Here. Sit.
What are you doing?
Checkmate.
- Thank you.
- I'm really sorry!
I really don't know
what's gotten into him!
Oh, oh!
Nia, I am so sorry.
I should've climbed the wall for you.
It's her.
Huh? Who?
The woman who accused me of stealing.
Nia, that's not her.
We did it!
This is exciting.
Um, isn't it exciting?
- You okay, Nia?
- Fine.
Okay. Um
Samir?
Actually I feel awful.
My brother's been having
terrible nightmares
and just when he was getting better
I made him come along on this
This mystery.
Now he's terrified of a dog.
He needs to get over that!
No offense, but you need to stop
treating him with kid gloves.
He's a kid!
Never should've listened to you.
I really need to go.
Now? We're finally getting somewhere.
I'm sorry. My brother comes first.
- Good luck.
- Samir, come on.
Let him go.
He's worried about his brother.
Well, not to sound heartless,
but now that we found the chess pieces,
shouldn't we be taking
them to the wizard?
Maybe now he'll finally reveal himself.
And grant our wishes. Come on!
This would be a lot easier
if Oliver were alive.
Yeah.
Now what?
Oh, great and powerful wizard,
we, uh, have your chess pieces.
Please tell us what to do.
"Get justice."
What does it mean?
This reminds me of Sector 371.
It's my favorite RPG.
Role-playing game?
Okay.
Well, you do these missions,
and you get plot items like this.
And then you use these to open
hidden doors or reveal secret rooms
and get to the next level.
But this isn't a game.
It kind of is.
There! The scales of justice.
But they're uneven.
Oh, no. They're broken. Oh.
See, that's why you
don't let your guard down.
Maybe they're supposed to be uneven.
In order to get justice,
we need to balance them.
Whoa, Nia, genius.
Cool.
- What is it?
- It's a USB drive.
Of course.
And, um, what exactly does it do?
I mean I know, but for Scarecrow.
It's for a computer. It contains files.
Interesting.
But where's the wizard?
You know, Scarecrow, that's
the smartest thing you've ever said.
- Uh, what are you doing?
- Give it back.
No. You've been lying to us,
and I want to know the truth.
This Oliver guy, whose office this is
He's dead.
- And they've been keeping that from us.
- No! The wizard's dead?
Wait, can wizards even die?
He's not the wizard.
That's just a story they made up.
I don't believe it. You betrayed us?
How could you?
You don't understand.
Please, just give us the USB drive,
and we'll explain everything.
You're not getting it.
You're making a huge mistake.
You're the ones who made the mistake.
