Mission Impossible (1966) s03e04 Episode Script

The Mercenaries

Good afternoon, Mr.
Phelps.
You're looking at Colonel Hans Krim, the leader of a mercenary army currently ravaging Equatorial Africa.
Ostensibly, Krim fights for the cause of emerging nations, but in reality, he is nothing but a military gangster who plunders ally and enemy alike.
Krim and his mercenaries have converted their loot into gold bars which are kept within the enclave used as headquarters.
Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to destroy Krim and return the gold.
As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.
This tape will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
A little misdirection, it'll work.
Two blanks, Rollin.
For the third shot, you're on your own.
This is the enclave.
It's completely surrounded by mountains.
This is a road.
It's the only way in or out.
What about the lake? It's hardly more than a pond, really.
It just trickles away to nothing.
What about the tunnel? The tunnel's an old escape route out of the compound, runs a few hundred yards into the jungle.
There's been some settling but it is passable, Barney.
Rollin, how long do you think you can hold out? About six hours at the most.
Will this unit of yours get the job done in that time, Barney? - We'll make it, Jim.
- Right.
Jim, Krim knows about the missing gold.
Gold is his business.
He already has over a million dollars of it in his vault.
You can be sure that he knows.
It's been an open secret in that part of the world for the past 15 years.
This is the ad you'll be answering, Rollin.
Runs every day in the Tangiers paper.
This is how they get their recruits, huh? Right.
Recruits like you.
Insubordination.
Thief.
Rapist.
Embezzler.
Deserter.
That's a lie.
Lt.
Alex Moreland, 20th Colonial, deserted September 18th, 1959.
Released, Toulon Penitentiary, June of this year.
All of you, I expose your secrets so that you will all know they mean nothing here.
Only the present is important and the future.
Obey orders and you will all leave Africa rich men.
I guarantee it.
Sorry, road's closed beyond this point.
We're missionaries.
We don't mean any harm.
No one goes through this checkpoint.
Those are orders.
We're here to treat the sick and bring comfort to the dying.
Surely you can't object to that.
And we have Bibles for the men as well.
Nothing, just Bibles.
Let them through.
There've been four men before you from the old 20th Colonials.
They all seemed preoccupied.
As if they were searching for something.
Really, colonel? Something valuable, I always imagined.
Tell me, lieutenant, did the 20th leave something valuable here? Only our honour, colonel.
I've heard reports that the 20th was forced to leave behind a great deal of gold bullion, yes? - No? - No, colonel.
The one thing we didn't leave behind was gold.
Good day.
Keep an eye on him.
You're wasting your time here, Reverend.
Get Colonel Krim.
How much? Sixty dollars.
- Too much.
- Not with the risks I'm taking.
I like the setup.
It's ingenious.
And I like the product.
How many can you deliver and how fast? Depends on how much you pay and how fast.
- Don't worry about the payment.
- I worry about the payment.
I'd worry a lot less if I saw the colour of your money.
Here it is.
At ease, men.
Nothing yet.
Satisfied? - I get paid in advance.
- On delivery.
No deal.
Get out, Reverend.
That the way you want it, colonel? You don't understand, gunrunner.
This isn't the colonel's gold.
It belongs to every man in this command.
Now, if he makes a bad deal, he has to answer for it.
Am I dealing with him or with you? Gruner, I'll handle it.
Native governments are getting stronger, Krim.
You need what I'm selling.
- Ten percent down.
- Fifteen or no deal.
It's a deal.
I've got it.
"Ten mortars, six light machine guns, six cases of automatic rifles.
" Six cases? Come in.
What did you change for? We're leaving in a little while.
Do we have to drive back tonight? You're welcome to spend the night here.
Thank you, colonel.
Six hundred degrees.
Seven hundred.
Two thousand.
Twenty-one hundred.
Twenty-two hundred.
The man was following me, that's why I hit him.
What's this all about, anyway? Where did you get this? It's a good luck charm.
I've carried it for years.
You found the gold the 20th Brigade left behind.
Now, where is it? Hang him up.
If my men knew you'd found this gold and didn't share it with them, they'd tear you apart.
Tell me where it is, I'll help you get it out of the enclave.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Well, when he starts talking, let me know.
Now, let me tell you something.
I like the fighting.
And the killing.
And any professional soldier who tells you different is a liar.
Now, we're all butchers because the killing makes everything better.
Food tastes, booze hits.
And even a woman.
And now I'm making it pay.
I've soldiered all over the world and this is the best because I'm gonna be a rich man.
A very rich man.
I admire your frankness, colonel, it's refreshing.
Well, you, my dear, are refreshing.
- Catherine, we're going to bed.
- Jim, I was just beginning to I know what you were trying to do.
Come on.
Sorry, Krim.
She's not part of the deal.
We'd better get out of here in an hour and a half or Rollin's had it.
May I come in, colonel? Of course.
Jim.
Give me one good reason why I shouldn't kill you.
Please, Jim, if you shoot him, they'll kill you and it'll be for nothing.
Get up! Come on.
Cut me down.
- You ready to talk? - Yes.
Yes, just cut me down.
Now you have something to tell us, lieutenant? There is.
There is some gold.
Where? - Will you share it with me? - Of course.
Where is it? - You'll kill me if I tell you.
- Do you want some more of this? No.
No.
I'll take you there.
Let's go.
It's in there.
- See? There's enough for all of us.
- Yes.
Yes, there is.
All we have to do is get it out of the enclave.
- There must be a ton.
- More.
We'll need help to get it back to the vault.
Karl, this doesn't go to the vault.
Colonel? I made this army rich.
I'll make it richer.
But this is mine.
And yours.
You like that? - What if the men find out? - They won't.
This will be on its way to Tangiers in a couple of hours, and no one the wiser.
How can you get it past the roadblock sentry? You'll see.
I figure you can get it out of the enclave.
If you clear my truck past the checkpoint, I can get it all the way to Tangiers.
- What's in it for me? - Twenty-five thousand dollars.
- You gotta be out of your mind.
- Fifty.
For the risks I'll be taking? No chance.
Fifty thousand.
Take it or leave it.
It's a good deal.
All right, you hired yourself a truck.
- That's all of it, colonel.
- Better make sure.
A precaution.
Let's go.
- She stays.
- What is this? You didn't think I'd just trust you? When you get back from Tangiers with the deposit receipt, she can leave.
But if anything goes wrong - Good morning, major.
- Good morning, ma'am.
- Stohlman.
- A truck will be arriving shortly.
Pass it through at once.
Don't waste time searching it.
That's what I said, Stohlman.
No search.
Very good, colonel.
How much of an advance did you have to give him? None.
He decided to trust us.
Mrs.
Wilson will be staying with us till her husband gets back.
- Major Gruner.
- Gruner, this is Colonel Krim.
I forgot to mention, Verte and Wolsk want out.
I gave my approval.
Draw up the papers immediately.
They wanna be out of camp by tonight.
- But, colonel - That's all, major.
I don't wanna be disturbed for the remainder of the day.
Sorry, road's closed beyond this point.
Sorry, road's closed beyond this point.
We're missionaries.
We don't mean any harm.
No one gets past this point.
Those are my orders.
No one goes past this checkpoint.
Those are my orders.
Major Gruner here.
Yes, Stohlman? The missionary truck, the rear springs were flat as if it carried a heavy load, so we searched it.
We found a false bottom filled with gold.
Hold that truck, Stohlman! - What is this? - An emergency, colonel.
Contrary to your orders, Stohlman searched the missionary truck.
He found it filled with gold.
- That's impossible.
- That's a fact, colonel.
How did your husband come by so much gold? Don't ask me.
How would I know? You had better know That would be far too convenient, colonel.
Gruner, I'll hang you for this.
We're waiting, Mrs.
Wilson.
Look, I'm not Mrs.
Wilson.
I'm a business friend of Jim's.
I come along to keep the customers happy.
What about the gold? I don't know about any gold.
I do know that your colonel and Jim were off somewhere most of the night.
- To the vault, perhaps, colonel? - She's lying.
I'll take you to the vault.
I'll show you the gold's still there.
I don't know why you lied.
But I'll have your heart for this.
I had nothing to do with it.
Last time I was here, you were with me.
Wolsk, Verte, tell him.
They're in this with you.
That's why you had their discharge papers drawn.
There isn't a scratch on that safe.
It wasn't broken into.
And only you have the combination, Krim.
Major Gruner wants her in the vault.
Let's go.
