My biscuits aren't burnin'.
Aaah! My biscuits are burning! - Biscuits.
- Grrr! Clean up this mess! Sea slug! Conga line! Egg nog! Huh? Whaa! Whoa! This question's tougher than a bodybuilding bear! Yaah! Are you ready to get pumped up? Never mind! Just get me an answer team! Sorry, Mr.
Grumpy-man! Hmm? Aaah! What on earth is this What is this stuff? It's, like, concrete, dude.
Yeah! We're paving our driveway! Driveway? What do you need a driveway for? We got work to d - Whoops.
- Boop! Boop! Hmm! Hey, I can't move! Um, well, let's see here.
Maybe if I pull Bo, and Bo pulls me, and then Bang pulls me too, and Bing and Boop pull us We don't have time for this! Huh? Answer team 341-B reporting for duty, sir! Good! Hwaaa! Errg! Hi, StoryBots! My name is Mia.
- Hi, Mia! - Hey, how's it goin'? How are you? I have a question for you.
Oh! Is it about bears? No I bet it's about grizzly bears! No.
Ever hear of polar bears? - Yes.
- Is it about polar bears? - No.
- Panda bears? - Koala bears? - Sloth bears? - Sun bears? - Polar bears? - We already did that one! - Oh, right.
Gummy bears? Goldilocks and the Three Bears? - Bodybuilding bears! - Bear hugs? - Owl bears? - Guys! Guys! I think Mia wants to ask us about something other than bears.
- Right, Mia? - Yes.
Oops! Ha ha! Sorry, Mia! What's your question? How do eyes see? Huh.
How do eyes see? That's a good question.
Hey! I got it! I know where we can find the answer! StoryBots, prepare for transport! Let's find out how eyes see! Outer world, here we come! Uh-oh! - Uh, could we get some help, please? Hub and Bub.]
Uhhh Urgh! Bring me that jackhammer! Did somebody say "jackhammer"? Aaaah! Uhhh! Eeee! Aaaah! Booooop! Every time! This place is really creepy! Yeah, man.
It's, like, totally givin' me the heebie-jeebies and stuff.
- Bing, why are we in the woods? - To see the bats, of course.
Bats? And how are bats supposed to help us understand how eyes see? Bats fly around in the dark, so they must be able to see really, really, really, really well! Right? My eyes ain't bad, StoryBots, but I can't see in the dark any better than you can.
I just generate ultrasonic frequencies and analyze the resulting patterns of reflection to echo-locate.
Bye! Oh.
Well, he wasn't very helpful.
Uh, guys, now what are we gonna do? Um, do you guys want to get out of the woods? Run! Oh, thank goodness! I do not like the dark! Guys! We can see again! Yeah, Beep, we're under this lamp post.
And we couldn't see when we were in the woods.
Oh! We should put some lights up in the woods! Good idea! Big spotlights! No, no, you're missing my point! OK, you guys can see me now, right? Uh, yeah, of course, Beep.
But what about now? - Whoa! - Beep vanished! I didn't vanish.
I'm right here.
You can only see me when I'm in the light.
I think eyes must need light to see! - Aaah! - I want to be in the light! I want to be in the light! - We've got to take cover! - Yeah, man! What about that spooky castle over there? Come on, guys, let's go! Come on, let's get out of here! What a creepy castle! I hope they have warm towels! Oh hello? The StoryBots? Oh, don't be frightened.
I'm Dr.
Henrietta Han Snizzle Snozzle Alavaski Baski Guggenheimer Capillary Sama Kabuki Wow Willie Wah Whoa! But my friends call me Pat.
- Hi, Dr.
Pat.
- Nice to meet you, Dr.
Pat.
Oh, it's very nice to meet you as well, but I'm very, very, very, very busy.
The storm of the century is upon us! And, you know the moment is here.
- Oh.
We're sorry to interrupt.
- Yeah.
We were just trying to learn how eyes see for a girl named Mia.
What? That's the exact field I've been studying for my invention! Look! It's all right here! You see, StoryBots, light is made out of waves of energy that originate from a light source.
Like a light bulb.
- Or a candle! - Or the sun! Or lightning! Precisely! The light waves travel from the light source until they bump into something.
When they do, some of the light waves get absorbed and some of them bounce back towards the eye! Well, what happens when the light gets inside the eye? Oh, that's simple! I apologize, StoryBots, but I must be going.
I need to finish my work before the storm passes! Well, maybe we can help you out! Oh, that would be stupendous.
But I must warn you, Beep, this is some really, really, really, really, really science-y stuff we're talkin' about here.
Oh, we love science-y stuff, don't we? We love science.
Yay, science! Magnificent! To the Invention Room! Ah-ha.
Huh? Invention.
You know that Edison made The electric light The brothers named Wright Put planes in flight But things like sneakers And crayons and glue All must have had inventors too The beanbag chair, The music box Interlocking plastic blocks The bouncy house, The playground swing Somebody had to invent that thing The bike that zips from there to here It didn't just suddenly appear It took brains to design Each spoke and spring Somebody had to invent that thing Somebody had to figure out How to make a doorknob I'll call it a "doorknob"! A bendy straw And a screw lid for a jar Hmm! Peanut butter! And the tiny little door Where a dog can enter All of those things Had to have an inventor A Bell or a Tesla, A Da Vinci or a Hedy Lamarr - Hedy Lamarr! - Yes! The hula hoop, the foot-long frank The flusher on the toilet tank The big rubber mask For snorkeling Somebody had to invent that thing Umbrellas and scissors And yo-yo strings Somebody had to invent All of those things This way, StoryBots! Hurry! There's not much time! Whoa! Behold my creation! Aaah! It's a robot! Yes! It's a robot, and it's nearly complete! Go ahead.
Climb inside the pupil and I'll show you how it works! Pupil? What's the pupil? It's the hole in the center of the eye.
We must hurry.
The storm is growing stronger.
- Whee! - Whoa! - Aah! - Boop! - We're in, Dr.
Pat.
- Good.
The pupil is surrounded by this green circular mechanism called the iris.
It also comes in blue and brown, but my favorite color is green.
Unhhh! What doesn't the iris do, Dr.
Pat? The iris opens and closes the pupil.
When it's dark, it opens the pupil to let in more light, but when there's too much light, it closes the pupil.
Let me demonstrate.
Uh, guys? Aaaah! The iris! It's closing the pupil! Hurry, Bo! - Come on! You gotta go! - Hurry! Guys, I don't think I'm gonna make it! Oh! S-Sorry, Bo.
- Hey, Bo.
- Ohhh Next we must attach the cornea.
This protects my little beauty from dust and harmful UV rays as light enters the eye.
But what happens to the light after it passes through the pupil? It must be focused, of course.
This requires a blob-like mechanism called the lens.
That must be this thing! - Hee hee! - Whoa! Bing! - Wow! The lens is changing shape! - Yes, it is! The cornea on the outside and the lens on the inside focus the light that comes in through the pupil.
This helps the eye see objects clearly, whether they are far away, close up, or in between.
Whoa! The light is being projected onto this big screen.
Heh heh! Quack! Quack! Heh heh heh.
Like a duck, man.
What happens when the light hits the screen, Dr.
Pat? Aaah! Sorry, but the time is here! Why don't we let the robot show you the rest? Yes! StoryBots? Are you OK? - I think so.
- I'm OK, man.
- Yeah.
- I'm OK.
Hello? What is your bidding, creator? StoryBots, we did it! It's alive! It's alive! This calls for a celebration! I'll get some milk and cookies.
Mwaaaaaa! Directive confirmed.
Must get milk and cookies.
No.
Not you.
I'll get the milk and cookies.
Get milk and cookies.
Get milk and cookies No.
Wait.
I'll get the milk and cookies! Stop! No, wait! Wait! Stop! Get milk and cookies.
Dr.
Pat! Get milk and cookies.
- Whoa! - Get milk and cookies.
Get milk and cookies.
Get milk Wait! No! At least take an umbrella! Ahh! Huh? Arggh.
Aaah! Ohh Aaaah! Rain.
Rain, rain, go away Come again some other day Wanna go outside and play Come again some other day Rain, rain, go away Come again some other day Wanna go outside and play Come again some other day Scooby-doo-buh-bom, Dooby-dooby-doo-buh-dom bom Dooby-dooby-doo Dooby-doo-bop, buh-doo-bop, Buh doo-wop, doo-wop Bop-bop-bah-dooby-dooby-doo Rain, rain, go away Come again some other day Wanna go outside and play Come again some other day We wanna go outside and play Get milk and cookies.
Get milk and cookies.
Get milk and cookies.
This robot is, like, totally out of control, man! What are we gonna do? - StoryBots! - Huh? StoryBots, my calculations have deduced that the robot cannot see where it's going.
There must be a problem with the eye.
How do we fix it? Check the retina.
It's like a big screen at the back of the eye.
Look closely.
The retina is covered with light-sensitive cells called rods and cones.
Rods and cones.
Hoo hoo! The rods sense light and dark, and the cones sense color.
Are they activated? - They look good to me, man.
- OK, good.
Rods and cones convert light into electrical signals that are sent along the optic nerve.
You just have to connect it! What was that? Uh, come again? Uh, over? Follow the optic nerve to the br What? Optic nerve? Follow it where? You're breaking up! Dr.
Pat? Dr.
Pat! Oh, I think we lost her! It's OK.
It's OK, guys.
We just gotta find the optic nerve.
Hey, guys! I found some wires behind the retina! Check it out! - Whoa-ho-ho! - Great work, Bing! Let's see where they go! Huh? Well, that doesn't look good.
- Whoa! - Careful! This must be the optic nerve, man! Well, if this is the optic nerve, I think I found our problem! I bet the signals aren't getting to that big robot brain thingy! Come on, guys, we gotta reconnect that cable! Whoa! This is, like, super-slippery, man! And really, really high up! Boop buh-buh-bum buh-bom-bom-bom-bom-bah! Aaah! And the robot is headed for that really, really, really high cliff! Mr.
Robot, ya gotta stop! Ya just gotta stop! Negative.
Must get milk and cookies.
What are we gonna do? What are we gonna do! Never fear! Super-mega-awesome-ultra-Bing is here! Bing, wait! Uhhh aaah! Uh-oh.
Aaaah! I'm comin' for ya, Bing! Yahh! Gotcha! - Oh.
Hey, Bing.
- Hey, little buddy.
- Hey, Bing! - Hi! - Booop! - Hold on! Waaa Oh, yeah! Yeah! Got it! Unhh! Huh? Aaaah! Hurry, Bing! You have to connect the optic nerve! Oh.
Right.
Processing visual data.
Danger! Danger! Danger! zero percent.
Adjusting trajectory.
Oh, phew! That was a close one.
StoryBots.
Come in! Can you hear me? Dr.
Pat! We did it! Yeah! We reconnected the optic nerve! Oh, thank goodness.
Now the electrical signals can flow from the eye to the brain.
What happens when the signals get to the brain, Dr.
Pat? The brain organizes those signals into a picture in your mind.
Wow! The stars look beautiful tonight.
They sure do, robot man they sure do.
Thank you, StoryBots.
Thank you so, so much.
Well, it looks like we got our answer, guys.
Thanks, Dr.
Pat.
- Bye! - Good luck with your next invention! See you soon.
Ha ha ha ha.
StoryBot fun fact number 2,793,461.
Did you know that the Ankylosaurus, a dinosaur that lived 65 million years ago, had a powerful clubbed tail that it used for self-defense? - Begin.
- Hi-ya! Train more.
- Hi-ya! - Train more! Hi-ya! You train too much! Ahh-ahh-aaaaah! Yo, let me be frank, I'm built like a tank - 'Cause I'm an Ankylosaurus - Like the walls of a bank I'm built like a tank, 'Cause I'm an Ankylosaurus I weigh four tons, So you know I don't run But I still react quick, Covered in plates My armor's so great, And my skin's real thick I'm down on all fours, Real low to the ground So you can't push me around, Four horns on my head And when I fight, never fail, Because check out my tail My tail is big, it's bony nub I swing it around And around like a club I may be short, but I pack a punch I eat plants for breakfast, Eat plants for lunch I lived about 65 million years ago Stayed inland, Can't find me on the coast Look, I'm one of the last To ever go extinct 'Cause I'm way stronger Than you even think Yo, let me be frank, I'm built like a tank 'Cause I'm an Ankylosaurus, Like the walls of a bank I'm built like a tank, 'Cause I'm an Ankylosaurus 'Cause I'm an Ankylosaurus, 'Cause I'm an Ankylosaurus Uh, uh, 'Cause I'm an Ankylosaurus 'Cause I'm an Ankylosaurus Unhh! Cranium! Femur! Spleen! Huh? Whoa.
Hap's upside-down, dudes! Whoa! Get up! I told you StoryBots to find an answer, not dilly-dally! We got the answer, boss! We know how eyes see! Yeah! It all starts when light bounces off something and hits the cornea on the outside of your eye.
The cornea's like a curved window that protects the eye and focuses light before it enters the pupil.
The pupil is a tiny hole in the eye that's surrounded by a colorful structure called the iris.
The iris controls how much light enters the eye.
When it's bright out, it makes the pupil smaller to let in less light.
And when it's dark out, it makes the pupil bigger to let in more light.
Once light enters the eye, it passes through a clear, blobby thing called the lens.
The lens changes shape to better focus light onto the retina.
That's like a giant movie screen at the back of your eye.
The retina has millions of cells called rods and cones.
They give off electrical signals which travel along the optic nerve to the brain.
And when the brain organizes all those signals to create pictures in your mind that's how eyes see! Just Just give me that tape! Aah! It's got my mustache! Ohh! Good-for-nothin' frizn-frass The story of sight begins with light Bouncing off an object Entering the eye And makin' its way on through First it's focused, Then rearranged Into electrical signals That reach the brain Then, voila, sit it back And enjoy the view When light from an object Meets your eye The first layer that it's greeted by Is the cornea Which protects the eye And focuses the light Then it passes through the pupil All surrounded by this ring of color Called the iris It controls the pupil size So the right amount of light Goes in the eyes And then hits the lens Which is sorta like a window, Except it bends And exactly how it bends depends, Are you lookin' near or far? Then the light shines on the retina Which is lined with Zones of special cells Called rods and cones And when the light hits those, It gets transformed into signals That go climb aboard Your little optic nerve Which sends 'em toward the brain - Which does the rest - Yeah, yeah The story of sight begins with light Bouncing off an object Entering the eye And makin' its way on through First it's focused, Then rearranged Into electrical signals That reach the brain Then, voila, sit it back And enjoy the view Huh.
I can't believe my eyes.
That was pretty good.
Hey, look, everyone! It's Mia! - Hi, Mia! - Hi, Mia! How ya been? So, Mia, what do you think? Well, StoryBots, I had no idea that my eyes connected to my brain.
Yeah! Pretty cool, huh? StoryBots, you guys are the best! - Aww.
- Really? You mean it? - It's so nice of you to say.
- Thank you, Mia.
OK, cut the flattery! Admire each other on your own time! By givin' a handwritten note of appreciation! Or just tell someone that you love 'em! Little things can go a long way, ya know? But right now, we got work to do! Let's move! Go! Go! Now! Bye, boss.
