Once and Again (1999) s03e06 Episode Script

Jake and the Women

~ bufgelfly ~
Let me tell you about
the women in my life.
I'm beset by them.
I'm undone by them.
I'm in awe of them.
I'm in love with them.
Maybe it's time I have a boy.
Wouldn't that be nice?
Dad! Alley-oop.
My man!
That'd be nice.
Remember, coaches,
you want to be aware of what she wants.
If she wants to be massaged.
Maybe she likes
to have her feet rubbed.
Relax,
and exhale, let it all go.
Let the shoulders drop.
Arms open and relaxed, no clenching.
Good, everyone.
Nice.
When Grace was a baby,
she used to whisper things in my ear.
Like she was telling me secrets.
So, how is the play going?
It's OK.
OK? You're the star.
How can it be just OK?
I don't know, it just is.
- Who's that boy I saw you with--
- Just a friend. Dad.
I really want to hear this song, OK?
daughters have a way of
putting you under their spell.
The way they reach up and
scratch your whiskers
when you haven't shaved.
Or the way they offer you up
their little foot to tie their shoes.
You chew funny.
How do I chew?
You chew too fast.
Like a dog that doesn't chew
before he swallows.
Yes, you do.
Open your mouth.
What do you think you're doing?
Dad won't open his mouth.
- Tickle him under his arms.
- Hey!Don't start with me.
Let me try his feet!
Stop oh, no!
Help! Ah!
They're completely and utterly
bewitching.
Zoe, you think
you could help at all?
Sorry, this book is so funny.
Can I have it?
Who's that?
The new coffee person.
- Judy?
- What? Oh, yes, you can have it.
Are you gonna have a grand opening?
I don't know, grand opening
makes me think of supermarkets.
I think I'll just open.
But it'd be great if you mentioned it
on the air, if you're so inclined.
Oh, yeah, that's a possibility.
Hey, guys!
This purse is so heavy
and there's nothing in it.
Hi, Tiffany!
- How's the baby?
- He's good!
So it's a "he"?
- I'm gonna have a brother?
- Yeah. I don't know.
I just say "him"
because I don't like to say "it".
But you don't know.
I feel like I know,
kind of, in my heart.
- You wanna feel?
- I knew Grace was gonna be a girl.
- You did?
- Yeah, I just knew.
That's how I feel.
Are you having a baby shower?
Not unless you have one for me.
- I'll have one for you.
- Zoe!
I was just kidding.
But yo have to have a baby shower.
That's how you get presents.
Plus, I wanna go.
OK, you know what?
If I have a baby shower,
I will make sure you are invited.
Tiffany, are any of your friends
planning to give you one?
My friend Nona was going to,
and she flaked because
her boyfriend disappeared.
I see.
You know what?
If you want, Tiffany,
we could give you a little shower.
- Something small.
- Not that small!
That's really sweet,
but you don't have to do that.
We want to. Right, Judy?
Yeah, I love showers.
I always give the same thing:
a receiving blanket.
I buy them ten at a time.
Just think about it and let us now.
I will. God, you're so nice
to be so nice to me!
I have to pee!
Vic!
Vic, you seen these transitions?
Someone could trip over these.
You think you can fix it?
About the time we open next week?
Thanks, Vic.
Do you still have time
to do that hospital tour with me?
- What time is that again?
- It's at eight.
Yeah, I'll pick you up at 7:30.
Could you do 7:15?
I just don't want to be late.
That's fine. Excuse me one second,
I have to check
Jake, somebody could trip over here.
- Maybe we should get it fixed?
- Hey, that's a good idea.
Like I said: I'm beset.
Excuse me, I'm gonna check
You know,
I took a course in feng shui,
if you need any help
with that kind of thing.
Really? Great, maybe.
- I'm gonna sit down.
- I'm sorry.
No, no, no. Thanks.
Are you OK? Can I get you anything?
No, I'm fine, I'm just
feeling a little large, you know.
Well, you look absolutely great.
You have that glow thing.
Really?
Thanks.
What?
I just had a flash or something.
- Of what?
- Of you with a baby.
- What do you mean?
- I just had a vision,
of you holding a baby.
- You did?
- Just now.
Whose baby was it?
Your baby.
Definitely your baby.
How do you know?
It's just clear to me.
Well, I can't see
how that would happen!
You know anytime soon.
It's what I saw.
Anyway, I should take a nap before--
- The hospital. Let me help you.
- No, I'm fine.
- You sure?
- Yeah.
At my friend Sarah Salinger's
mom's baby shower,
they had, like, this ceremony.
What kind?
With candles and chanting.
I don't remember exactly, but
it had something to do
with women being goddesses.
- I'm not going to this.
- Grace, guess what. You have to go.
I don't understand
this baby culture thing.
- What are you talking about?
- Yeah, what?
It just seems like everywhere you go,
there are people with strollers.
- So?
- So, I don't get it.
You will one day.
I might not.
Just I don't like
the smell of hospitals.
Everything seems so sterile.
It's a hospital.
But I think I'd feel better
having the baby at home.
We should look into a midwife.
You know,
insurance won't pay for that.
I know, I'm just--
I'm not comfortable.
Did I tell you that Zoe wants
to have a baby shower for me?
- No, I'd have remembered that.
- Isn't that sweet?
Yes, that's very sweet.
How did this happen?
What do you mean?
I just wonder how it came to be.
It was Zoe's idea,
and Lily's too, I guess.
You don't have to be involved,
if that's what worries you.
Here's what concerns me.
What?
I don't want Grace and Zoe
getting the wrong impression.
- And what impression would that be?
- You know, that we're--
Come on
I don't want them having any expectation
about our relationship. Especially Zoe.
Whatever our relationship is, Jake,
this is still Zoe's sibling
that's in my stomach.
And she's gonna have
expectations about that.
No, I know that. I'm just saying--
Kids see things more intensely.
You let her throw you a baby shower,
they'll think we're getting married.
I don't think that's a good idea,
you know?
If you want a baby shower,
have your girlfriends throw you one.
Fine, I'll tell them no.
I mean, if you're gonna have one,
they can go.
I'm not against it.
I just think it's better this way.
I got it.
Zoe, it's Tiffany.
I just read about this great game
we could do at your shower.
Except it's kind of gross,
cause you have to taste baby food.
It does sound pretty gross.
Listen, Zoe, is your mom around?
I need to talk to her for a second.
Yeah, sure, hold on a second.
Mom, phone!
Hey, Lily, it's Tiffany.
I'm just calling to let you know
that I'm really sorry,
but I don't think
I can do the baby shower.
Why not?
I just-- I might
be going out of town.
Is everything OK?
Oh, yeah, everything's fine.
Where are you going?
I think I'm gonna go back home,
to Madison.
For how long?
I'm not sure.
Are you thinking of
having the baby there?
I don't know, I might.
I might stay.
So, anyway
I just wanted to thank you,
it was a really sweet gesture.
And it meant a lot to me.
So thank you, Lily,
and thank Zoe for me, OK?
I didn't expect you.
Where is the
Where's the crib?
I can do that after the stroller here.
I don't think
that's such a good idea.
It's OK, I don't mind.
No, it's just that
I might be going home
to Madison to have the baby.
- I see.
- So I wouldn't want you to do--
I don't think you should do that.
- You don't?
- No.
Why not? Because
I'd think you'd be thrilled,
you know?
You're off the hook.
If you're doing it because
you think it's the right thing,
that's fine,
but if you do it because of me,
then I
I think it's a bad idea.
- You do?
- Yeah.
OK, see, now, I don't understand.
You confuse me, because
here you are
I wanna be there for the baby,
that's not gonna change.
But what does it mean in terms of
What? In terms of what?
In terms of sometimes you come
over here and we sleep together.
Babe, can you hear me?
Babe, can you hear me?
Yeah, I don't
I don't know exactly.
Well, can you see how I'm confused?
Probably Judy.
Then, you should probably go.
I'll be back.
Look, if you mean it
I won't leave.
Because I'd rather stay.
I think you should.
Stay.
But it's your decision.
Baby will enjoy
this gentle rocking in the womb.
Now come back to the center.
Open your ribcage,
push your chest forward.
I brought you something.
May I come in?
- Come in.
- Thank you.
Is that a loom?
I couldn't let you
go to Wisconsin without
a baby snowsuit.
Thank you! It's so cute!
Would you like some sage tea?
I was about to have some.
It strengthens the uterus.
Sure, I'll have some.
So, when are you
thinking about leaving?
I have to be honest,
I don't really know what I'm doing.
Then you might be staying?
I might.
That's good, isn't it?
I think so, I mean
I don't know.
I'm so indecisive right now.
What does Jake think?
I don't even know,
I mean, it's not clear to me, it's
One minute he's really
sweet and generous,
and then the next minute,
he completely checks out.
Does that make sense?
Gee, I wouldn't know.
But I do want to stay.
I want the baby to know him.
And the baby should know
Grace and Zoe.
It's true.
If you decide to stay,
I want you to know
that if you need anything, we're here.
You have a family.
The baby has a family.
Thank you, Lily!
So, you'll let us
have a shower for you?
Yes, I'd love that.
Good.
Terrific. Bye bye.
That's the 3rd singles party we booked
and we're not even opened yet!
That's great.
Where do you want this thing?
Let me give you a hand.
Put it against the wall over there.
You guys made this?
I did, and it actually took
a very long time.
His partner did all the real work.
It looks incredible.
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
So, we should get back
to the Dreiser.
Yeah, let me talk with Vic first.
I won't be a minute.
Good, you got two minutes.
I have to get
Oh, it's in the office
How's that going
over there, the Dreiser?
It's good. We have to
shamelessly sell our souls
to some investors right now
It's good.
So, you were married to Lily?
Oh, you said it.
How about you, you married?
Separated.
- Kids?
- One.
Boy. He's eleven.
I'm having another one.
Imminently.
Permanently.
Why didn't you just
get yourself a dog?
We should go.
- Let me straighten your-- OK.
- See you, Jake.
- Good luck.
- You too.
- Listen, Jake.
- Yes, Judy?
I wanted to talk to you
about that barista you hired.
What about her?
She doesn't seem super swift.
She's got a lot of experience
and great references.
She does. I swear!
Give her a chance.
I have to be comfortable
with people who work for me.
I've been doing this for years.
I know how to hire the right people.
I understand that but--
Hi. Judy Brooks?
Hi, I'm Kate Sleigh.
From the Trib'.
Oh, yeah, I completely forgot
you were coming.
Do you still have time for
a quick interview and a few pictures?
Absolutely,
I need all the publicity we can get.
Great. Is there a place we could go,
away from these workmen?
Sure, right back here
Jake, do you hear what I'm saying?
Are you listening?
- Babe, can you hear me?
- Jake, are you listening?
Could you not rub your disgusting feet
into my pillows?
Grace, is this you or me?
That's you.
I was so cute!
Do you want the baby
to be a boy or a girl?
I think a boy would be much better.
Yeah, Dad would have
someone to play baseball with.
I don't know how much time Dad is
gonna want to spend with Tiffany's baby.
What do you mean?
It's his baby, too.
I'm just saying, he clearly
doesn't want to marry Tiffany, so
But you're right, he'll probably be
thrilled to finally have a boy.
You know what'd be a great
decoration for the shower?
All our old baby pictures.
- We could make a collage.
- Exactly.
Look at your big ears.
They're massive.
I got to get out of here.
Morning!
I think the girls
are still upstairs.
- Have a great day.
- See ya.
Take care.
- They'll be down in a minute.
- Right, great.
Listen, Lil, I--
I've been meaning to ask anyway.
You want me to start waiting in the car?
I can honk.
Whatever is more
comfortable for you is fine.
I don't know if Tiffany told you,
we're gonna have a baby shower for her.
I just wanted to let you know
it was fine if you decided to come.
Yeah, she mentioned
something about that.
But I didn't know that it was
actually happening.
Why wouldn't it happen?
I just don't think it's a very good idea
for Grace and Zoe.
Baby's gonna be
their brother or sister.
- I wish you had checked with me first.
- Why?
Because I might have
an opinion about it.
I don't understand why
you're so upset about a shower.
And I don't understand why you have
to be so involved with Tiffany.
I wanted to do something for her.
That is so
nice and saintly of you,
- but you really didn't have to.
- You want me to call it off?
- Yes. Actually, yeah.
- You're being ridiculous.
And you just can't seem
to stay out of my business,
can you?
Jake, are you confused by
the words coming out of my mouth?
Hey, Dad.
Daddy, are you coming
to the baby shower?
The father has to be there
for the Earth Mother Guardian circle.
The what?
I wanted a cake from Chico's. Can you
get them to do something special?
And I really need your help with
the food. Could you please help us?
Please?
Of course, I can do that.
I'm not happy with these tomatoes.
It seems to happen ev--
Jake, hi.
If you're calling to remind me about
the food, it's being taken care of.
Oh, great. I was calling to see if you
would take Zoe to get a present tonight.
I have Lamaze class.
Could you go first thing
in the morning before the shower?
You have to pick up
the cake anyway, right?
So, you'll do it?
- Yes, sir, ma'am.
- Thank you.
Why are we getting a produce delivery
when we don't open til next week?
Isn't this gonna go bad?
I agreed to do the food
for the baby shower.
Who's gonna pay for that?
I guess I am.
Maybe we can work
something out. Hey.
I gotta get some
- Don't forget--
- I know, Lamaze class.
How are you?
I'm OK, thanks.
Actually, I've got an appointment.
Is everything OK between you guys?
Because I sense a little tension.
It will work itself out.
You know, I think that you guys have
a strong karmic ribbon between you two.
Like you were in a past life
together.
You do?
It's so funny.
The more pregnant I get,
the more clearly I can see
all these connections.
You know, Tiffany, not everything
has a cosmic significance.
Sometimes, people just
don't get along.
I don't see how that can be true.
So, any problems with your
birth control pills? Any headaches?
- No.
- Do you need a refill?
Yeah, I guess so.
So, I guess I will see you next year,
unless you have anything else?
Well, I did want to ask you
Since I'm here about me
About the possibility
that I might someday want to
have a baby.
- Someday.
- What's your question?
Since I'm not with anyone exactly,
I want to know how much time I have
and if I should start thinking about,
you know doing it by myself.
In vitro fertilization.
I see. What are you, thirty-five?
Thirty-six.
Approaching thirty-seven.
Approaching nursing home.
Well, Judy, in most women,
eggs quality does begin to decline
as they approach forty.
Now, that is not to say
that you don't have superb egg quality,
and you could continue to have that.
So, what is it exactly
that you're saying?
I mean, how much time
do you think I have before
We could screen you,
see how your eggs are doing.
How's it going?
Still looking. Give me a minute.
Let me think about that.
It's great. Thanks.
No problem. Bye bye.
Look at this!
This is exquisite!
Zoe, it's a little expensive,
sweetie.
- But it's so beautiful.
- I'm not sure if it's practical.
Let's keep looking for now.
Hi, can I help you find anything?
Yes, we're looking for a gift,
for a baby shower.
- Do you know if it's a boy or a girl?
- Nope. No, we don't.
Let me go pull some things.
I'll be right back.
Great. That'd be great. Thank you.
Dad, look at this.
Isn't this soft?
Zoe, you have an uncanny ability
to pick the most expensive things
in the store.
- But it's perfect.
- Sweetie, it's too much money.
Now, we can get her something
very nice that I can afford.
- Like what?
- I have no idea.
Here. Perfect. A mobile.
What about the shoes
you saw on the way in?
I have money at home
and I can get some from Grace.
Don't be silly.
I want to get something special.
Don't you want the baby
to have nice things?
Of course I--
But Zoe, it's just a token.
It doesn't have to be
an enormous gift.
What do you mean? It's your baby!
How can you say that?
Honey, it's not like
it was with you and Grace.
Why not?
So, these sets are good
for either boy or girl.
Look at these! These are cute
Aren't these cute?
I don't want those.
Come on, now, be reasonable.
- I don't want anything. I wanna go.
- You've got to get something.
No, I don't. It's your baby.
I'm leaving.
Sorry, I'll be excuse me.
So, I'm thinking about
in vitro fertilization.
You are?
- Yeah, I'm looking into it.
- Why?
You still have time.
- I may not.
- Judy, you're so young.
The reality is, I may not find somebody.
And you know I want children.
Well, wouldn't you need
somebody's
Seed? Yes, I would need a donor.
Judy, you would have
a baby by yourself?"
I might. I don't know.
Well, I think that's
What? Stupid? Tragic? Brave?
One of those.
Hey, you're here kind of early.
Look at this place
with all the decorations!
It's so exciting!
Can I get you something to drink?
Just water.
- Milk.
- OK. I'll be right back.
- Grace, wait.
- What?
Come here.
Feel, the baby's kicking!
Oh, my God!
It's so wild.
My half-sister Brandi's coming to the
shower today, I think you'll like her.
She used to be a roadie
for Aerosmith.
So, do you really think it's a boy?
So do I.
- I'll go get your milk.
- Thanks.
Hey, little one.
- Ew. What is that?
- Olive tapenade.
- I thought anchovies.
- Well, it's not.
- Good.
- Did you get a present?
We had a little problem.
- Daddy wouldn't spend any money.
- You know that's not true.
minutes.
- She refused to get a present!
Great, that was supposed
I can put your names on my gift.
I asked you to do one thing--
Are you kidding? You asked me--
You asked me to do ten things.
And pay for all of it.
And for something
that I don't even agree with!
Why not?
Fine. You're right.
Thank you very much.
What else do you want me to do?
Here I am! You want me to vacuum?
You want me to serve drinks?
What? Tell me!
Demonstrate the breast pump
for the ladies? I know how!
What I don't know, Lily,
what I have no freaking idea about,
is what you all want from me!
OK? None!
Yes! What!
Are you staying for the shower?
No, I'm not staying for the shower!
Fine.
- You guys need a hand?
- Hey, Jake.
- How's it going?
- Good. What do you think?
It's good. You guys are
going to shoot some hoops?
We were gonna, if I could get him
to stop working for one minute.
They've got that baby shower
going on at the house
- So you're hiding out?
- Pretty much.
They must be doing something
with doilies.
- Expressing their feelings.
- Bonding.
They only need us for sperm anyhow.
You wanna come with?
No, I can't
Come on, we'll sprain something.
It'll be fun.
Maybe next time.
Alright. Later for you.
God, Tiff, your boobs are huge!
- Real milkers.
- I know.
Hey, Grace, have you met Brandi?
- Oh, hi, you're her
- Evil half-sister.
Nice to meet you.
We were just talking
about Tiffany's breasts.
Oh, cool.
You're funny, Grace.
- I am?
- Totally.
Grace, who's this guy?
That's my step-father.
He's a hottie!
That is not a conversation
that I can have.
Who's this guy?
Oh, my God.
Hey, Tiff
May I come in?
Why not.
This office was a good idea.
Yeah, Judy's full of good ideas.
Shouldn't you be at the shower?
Jake, I need to say something.
I'm sure you do.
I think I've been insensitive,
and I want to apologize for that.
I know you're not a bad person,
and I know that I
tend to treat you like one.
That's nice of you,
to come and say that.
But I just blew up
in front of my girls
and I can only imagine
what they think of that.
Jake, they love you.
You have to know that.
Sometimes I wonder if everybody
wouldn't be better off if I just
went somewhere.
Why, because everyone
wants something from you?
Why do you think that is, Jake?
Do you realize how they see you?
- As a screw-up?
- No.
They see you as this powerful
figure in their lives,
who knows things,
and can do things and can
give them protection and love and
and fun.
Why do you think
my father loved you so much?
Because he knew you would
take care of us no matter what.
He knew you were
that kind of person.
You didn't think
I was that kind of person.
There were a lot of things wrong
with our marriage,
but none of them had to do
with who you are as a father.
I gotta get back.
- Are there any more of those noodles?
- Right here.
I can't seem to stop eating.
I know that feeling.
And I'm not even pregnant.
This is a great party.
I'm having the best time.
That's good.
- Can I ask you a question?
- Sure.
How does that feel,
to know you have
this life inside you?
It's the strangest thing.
What do you mean?
I have to be honest,
sometimes it feels like indigestion.
But other times,
when I'm so completely aware
that there's this little person
inside me who will
have an opinion and a hairstyle
and a certain laugh,
it's just so amazing to me
that this is even possible.
I don't know,
I'm not very good at describing things.
I think you are.
It's a mobile!
Thank you so much!
Laney, I needed one.
Look what I got!
- Those are great. Who gave you that?
- Laney.
Thank you, little miss.
That's from me. You wear it
during labor, it has soothing powers.
Brandi, I love this.
Does that also tell the sex of
Yeah, you can use it to
find out the sex of the baby.
If it swings, it's a boy.
If it spins, it's a girl.
I thought it was if it spins,
it's a boy.
No, if it swings, it's a boy.
Definitely.
- Now, I think it's swinging!
- It's a boy!
- This is from Zoe and me.
- Thank you.
God, you guys
This is the most precious thing
I've ever seen in my life!
I'm really really touched. Thank you.
Thank you, Zoe.
- You're welcome.
- Thank you, Grace.
You have to get that in gray.
What happened?
Thanks. So, Mom, Brandi
It's the daddy!
Come in!
Brandi, Tiffany's sister.
Oh, yeah, how you doing?
Dad, we're gonna do cake now.
You want some?
That's OK.
Oh, I want cake.
What's happened over there, Judy?
Next gift
OK if I come in?
Don't you want some cake?
My stomach hurts a little.
- You want me to get some ginger ale?
- No.
You want me to leave you alone?
Are you gonna marry Tiffany?
Probably not.
Why not?
Cause I don't think
we're ready to live together.
What about the baby?
Is he gonna live with you sometimes
like we do?
We haven't figured that out, yet.
Do you want him to live with you?
I think that
while he's still a baby, it's probably
best for him to stay with Tiffany.
- Will you ever visit him?
- Of course I will.
Sweetie, listen to me.
You understand that being your dad
and being Grace's dad,
it's been the most
important thing in my life?
And frankly
it's the only thing that's given me
any sense of accomplishment or meaning.
Now, I could never
know that there was a child out there
who was mine,
that I didn't take care of
and love.
Do you understand that?
Maybe.
It's OK if you're mad at me.
I can be pretty stupid sometimes.
Thanks for getting that present.
Oh, sweetness Sweetness baby.
You were right about it.
It really is special.
I'm glad we got it.
OK, so, this is one
of the Earth Mother rituals,
and it's called "Goddess circle".
Now, what you do is,
you take the arm
and you tie it on to
the wrist of the person next to you.
And we go all around the circle
until we're all joined together.
- Is it alright?
- Yes.
There you go. Zoe.
- Dad, you should be in this too.
- No, it's OK.
If I have to do this, so do you.
Come on! Get up here!
Alright.
Give me your hand.
- Do I tie it up?
- Yep.
And now we separate
by burning the yarn with a candle.
And we leave these bracelets on
to protect the baby until it's born.
- We can't take them off until then?
- No.
Until after the umbilical
cord is cut, right?
That's beautiful.
