A New Song
[MUSIC PLAYING.]
MALE DJ: Hey, welcome back, and thanks for joining us.
I'm here with Nina Brokaw.
If you're anything like me, you know her as the maker of atmospheric, wildly emotional, dreamy music.
Her last album "Tethered" was certainly a hit around our parts.
Nina, thanks for joining us.
NINA: Thanks for having me.
DJ: So, are you out on tour still supporting "Tethered"? NINA: This is just like a little mini-tour.
I'm opening for some friends of mine.
You know, "Tethered" came out about three years ago, so DJ: Well, yeah, you said it, I didn't say it, but now that you brought it up, the fans are curious and wondering is there something percolating in there? I know your records are often very personal, but can we get a little teaser, anything? NINA: Well, I'm still kind of dreaming it up at this point, so so, yeah, I don't know.
DJ: Cool, cool.
So you're taking your time.
But I know that you actually wrote and recorded "Tethered" in, like, 48 hours, so NINA: Yeah, but it doesn't always happen that way.
DJ: Oh, of course.
Totally.
NINA: I mean, yeah, sometimes it comes and it's simple and it just spills out, and sometimes it comes and it's not easy, it's hard, and it's it's just fucking hard, so can you just [TEXT ALERT.]

DJ: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to keep asking about NINA: No, I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to be defensive.
It's just for me, it's almost like There's, like, a shadow or something that's following me around and pulling me towards it.
And I've been resisting it for a long time, but you just can't live with a shadow, you know, so I think I just have to dive in.
But I don't know, it's terrifying.
I'm scared I'm not gonna get it right.
I'm scared of what's in there.
It's just Yeah, I don't know.

What are you doing here? I wanna talk to you.
I don't wanna talk to you.
I know.
I've been texting and calling you for three months.
I know you have.
I really don't wanna talk.
Please? No.
I don't want to do this.
Please.
[TAKES DEEP BREATH.]
Go ahead.
When I met you three years ago I just knew that I had met the love of my life.
And I'm pretty sure you felt the same way.
We were so in love.
We talked about getting married and having kids.
But you just destroyed it.
When I became successful you just You became jealous, petty, resentful, angry and you destroyed what we had.
I felt like you stopped loving me.
You made me feel terrible about myself.
And you took away the most important thing to me Us.
Well, it's difficult when the person you're with is more successful than you and more talented than you just generally a better person than you.
It changed me.
I didn't recognize myself.
I was jealous.
And I'm sorry.
But I need to get over you.
I see these images.
They're everywhere.
Like, I'll be taking a walk and I'll see the image of us.
Or even if I'm at a coffee shop, I'll turn around and it'll be playing on the wall.
I can't get away from it.
It's like you're haunting me.
And I understand why you don't want to talk to me.
But you can't just shut me out.
I still carry you with me.
I don't know what to do.
So is there any chance for us, or? It's ruined.
[SIGHS.]
And it's okay.
I forgive you.
