When Calls The Heart (2014) s03e06 Episode Script

Heartbreak

1 Previously on When Calls the Heart Do you have an idea for your first story? Rosemary LeVeaux! How would you like to become a movie star? A half-a-dozen of our trees are spiked.
Roy left a while ago.
Roy's the only man I've ever loved.
I'm looking for Becky and Cody Hastings.
I'm their aunt.
I didn't know that Becky and Cody had an aunt.
They don't either.
At least not yet.
My sister, Lydia, and I lost touch.
- Years ago.
- Lydia was their mother? My parents disowned her when she eloped.
I was in Paris when I heard the news from a friend that Liddie and her husband were killed.
An automobile accident.
I got home as fast as I could.
How did you know the children were here? I hired an investigator.
I can't thank you enough for all you've done for the two of them.
I was happy to do it.
I can see the family resemblance.
Becky has your smile.
Well, she'll be smiling a lot from now on.
I'm going to give those children everything they've missed, everything my sister would have wanted them to have.
They're going to love living in Davenport.
You're taking them to live in Davenport? Of course.
I'm their only living relative.
- But you don't even know them.
- They're my sister's children.
That's all I need to know.
My husband and I have an estate on the lake.
There's plenty of room.
You didn't think they would be staying here? I don't know what to think right now.
Well I need to check into my hotel.
- When can I meet the children? - They've left for school.
Then I'll come back tonight? Yes.
That would be fine.
- Mrs.
Connors.
- Oh.
Carolyn.
Maybe I should tell the children that you're here, and taking them to Davenport.
Whatever you think is best.
() - What's going on? - We're conducting a lawful search.
I'm going to have to ask you not to interfere.
I demand to know what you're looking for.
For these.
Tree spikes, used to sabotage Coulter's mill.
I've never seen those before.
You're gonna have to come with me, Mayor.
I'm placing you under arrest.
Keep moving.
() That's a promissory bond.
It means you agree to appear in court.
The two of you so blind that you can't see I'm being framed? We know what we found in your car.
You'll do just about anything to get between me and Nora.
This isn't personal, Henry.
Nora and I are divorced now.
What she does is her own business.
Forgive me if I find that hard to believe, given our current situation.
I will always care for her welfare, but that has nothing to do with what's going on here.
I didn't spike those trees.
Then you'll tell it to the judge, Henry.
(door slams) (Rip whimpers) Don't you want to go outside for recess? I want to work on my project for the competition.
But a little fresh air might do you good.
And you need to at least stretch your legs so you can build up the strength to walk again.
It's just I really want to win.
I never dreamed I'd get a chance at a scholarship.
How about a five-minute break? Then you can come right back inside.
Okay.
Okay.
- You know something? - What? I think your father would be very proud of you.
- I'm worried you're doing too much.
- I'm used to hard work.
Just the same, you have to take care of yourself.
- Where's Oliver? - I left him with a friend, at camp.
Everything okay? I don't want to sound ungrateful.
You've helped a lot of people at camp, including me, but I never asked you to talk to Roy.
After you did, I thought, "Maybe this will do some good.
" But all it did was get my hopes up for nothing.
I think he'll come around.
He just needs some time.
Please.
You really don't need to do anything else.
() (sighs heavily) I think I've messed up.
She just doesn't want to get hurt again.
I know Roy still cares about her, I just don't know what I can say to him to get him to come around.
Well, sometimes, it takes more than words.
Yeah, sometimes it does.
You know, I can't believe how lucky I was to find you.
Well, I can't believe how lucky I was to be found! Rosemary, I really am one of your biggest fans, and you are more beautiful in person than you are on stage.
You don't have to say that.
Um, you should know the reason I came here was to shut down this picture.
- Why? - Our star quit.
(whispers): Mary Medford? Griffith offered her a three-picture deal and doubled her salary.
But instead of shutting down the picture, I would like for you to take over her role.
Excuse me? What Did you just ask me to star - in The Reluctant Bride? - I know it's a gamble, but I've seen you on stage, Rosemary, and I know talent.
With the right opportunity, my dear, you could have quite a career.
(giggling) I talked to Jack about it.
Carolyn Connors is their next of kin.
Legally, there's nothing I can do.
Yeah, I didn't think so.
How am I going to explain it to them? Well, honesty is usually the best policy.
They were just starting to do so well here.
Well, there's no doubt you made a huge difference in those kids' lives.
You took 'em in, you cared for them when they needed you most, but is living with their aunt really so bad? - I didn't say she was a bad person.
- Well, everything you've said, she sounds like a very good person.
Sounds like she can offer a very nice life.
I know, and I'm happy for them.
It's just hard to let go.
Well, the more you fight it, the harder it's going to be Both for you and for the kids.
Are you gonna tell me to "pray for strength"? (chuckles) I figure you already have.
() I can't believe you arrested Henry Gowen.
Evidence says he's guilty, but I'm not so sure.
Ooh.
That's a great twist for my story.
Henry Gowen is in your story? Well, he is the mayor.
Right.
So am I in your story? There is a Mountie named Theodore.
- Tell me about Theodore.
- He's hard to describe.
Perhaps I could read what you've written.
- I haven't quite finished yet.
- Tell you what.
You let me read what you have so far, and I will cook you dinner tonight.
- You drive a hard bargain.
- 07:00 P.
M.
, your place.
And I bet I'm a better cook than Theodore.
(slams door) Jesse? Jesse! - What's wrong? - Yost let me go.
Says he has to cut back since the sawmill's shut down.
- I'm so sorry.
- Sorry doesn't fix anything.
- I just meant - You do something good for these people, they don't care.
- It's happening to everyone.
- It shouldn't happen to me.
But I guess that's what you get around here for being a hero.
Jesse, wait.
() I ordered a new blade for the head saw, but factory says it's gonna be a few weeks before it gets here.
I want you to look into trying to give the crew an advance on their pay.
We need to Find a way to help them through this, if we can.
Your heart's in the right place, Mr.
Coulter, but I'm just not sure you have the cash.
I know.
Just try and figure it out, okay? - I'll see what I can do.
- Thank you.
Oh that's not the face of a happy man.
I know shutting down the sawmill hasn't been easy for you.
Seeing you helps a lot.
How is it that, even when you're not yourself, you still know exactly what to say? Well, I'm not completely without charm, you know.
- I have some amazing news.
- Okay.
The producer of the movie has just asked me to replace Mary Medford in the picture.
Wow! That's, uh that's great.
But you're not happy.
No.
I I am, I'm happy, I'm very happy.
For you.
I'm worried about you.
Well, that's not going to do either of us any good, but I know what will.
What? You've always dreamt about being a star.
Now's your chance.
You go out there and you show everyone how incredibly talented you really are.
() Oh, Abigail.
I can't imagine what you must be feeling right now.
Carolyn can give them a lot of things that I can't.
Not the kind of things you've given them! Just the same.
Having family that can provide for their needs is a real blessing.
Do they know yet? No.
I'll tell them at dinner.
(sighs) (door thuds) - This is a surprise.
- There was nothing to do at the hotel, so I thought I'd come by and meet the children.
Is it true? Are we going to live with her? (sighs) Yes, sweetheart.
It's true.
(tearfully) Why's she taking us away? Oh, no, don't think of it that way.
You and Becky are gonna live in a big house.
But I don't want to live in a big house.
I want to live here.
My friends are here.
You're here.
Yes, but you'll write letters, and you'll come and visit whenever you want.
- Will you visit me, too? - Oh, of course, I will.
You won't give my room away to anyone else? No.
It'll be right here waiting for you, exactly as you left it.
Aunt Carolyn said she'll take us places.
That sounds like fun! - I could bring you back presents.
- And send me postcards.
And send them to my friends, too, so nobody forgets about me.
Oh! How could we ever forget about you? (chuckling) I had no idea this would cause such an upset.
He'll be all right.
It's just a bit of a shock, that's all.
Let's have breakfast tomorrow, then we can get to know each other.
Okay.
And don't you worry.
We'll get you out of that wheelchair in no time.
I'm thinking a trip to Switzerland might do some good.
That sounds exciting, doesn't it? Goodbye, dear.
Edith wouldn't take it.
- Why not? - It's like I told you, - she doesn't want the money.
- And I told you, it didn't work between her and me.
Maybe that's because you didn't try hard enough.
- You weren't there.
- Look.
- I know you're young - You don't know anything! Me and Edith, we should've never got married in the first place.
- I wasn't ready to settle down.
- You can't run away from your problems.
- What was I supposed to do? - Talk to her.
Work it out.
Admit what you did was wrong.
All my father did was yell at my mother.
- It would've been better if he left.
- You're not your father, Roy.
You don't have to make the same mistakes he did.
- It's too late now.
- It's never too late.
- I didn't mean to hurt her.
- Then talk to her.
- Tell her how you feel.
- What's the point? Here's the point.
His name's Oliver.
And he deserves to have a mother and a father.
I don't want to see it.
Being scared doesn't make you a coward.
You don't have to be the perfect husband or the perfect father no one is.
I just - I don't know if I can do it.
- The Man Upstairs thinks you can.
Or He wouldn't have given you the chance.
(footsteps) - May I have a word with you? - Please.
I can't stay.
I just came to tell you that I really didn't appreciate what you did.
What exactly did I do? I asked you to let me tell the children what was happening, and you told them instead.
You had no right.
I had every right.
I'm the children's aunt, their closest living relative, which makes me their legal guardian.
That doesn't mean you know what's best for them.
And you do? I don't think moving with you to Davenport is such a good idea.
I don't remember asking for your opinion.
They're settled here.
This is their home.
Mrs.
Stanton, please.
I don't want to argue with you.
- It isn't civilized.
- I don't care if it's civilized.
- I care about Cody and Becky.
- So do I.
You have till Tuesday to pack their things.
I think that gives everyone plenty of time to say their goodbyes, don't you? That's too soon.
I'm trying to be reasonable, but if this is going to get unpleasant, we can always leave sooner.
I understand you lost your job.
Didn't like it much anyway.
Well, that's unfortunate, though I do have an opportunity for you, if you're interested.
What do you need me to do? So - did you read the pages I gave you? - I did.
I just I felt like there needed to be more.
- More Theodore? - No.
Just more stuff.
- "Stuff"? - Yeah.
Like like a shoot-out.
- I don't write shoot-outs.
- It could be great! Think about it.
Theodore, he takes on the Garrison Gang, or the Tolliver Gang.
It's three against one, a damsel's in distress Or how about this? Theodore comes down with a very bad case of laryngitis and he can't come up with any more great suggestions? Elizabeth you're not mad at me for giving you ideas? No.
Of course not.
It's just Sometimes, I doubt myself.
I doubt that I'll ever be able to write anything good enough to be published.
Listen to me.
There are not enough women who are writing about what life is like on the frontier.
You have something very important to say.
Maybe I just need a little more encouragement.
How's that? - Encouraging.
- (chuckles) Bill? Did you have Henry arrested because you don't like seeing the two of us together? He was arrested because we found evidence in his car.
- He said he was being framed.
- (chuckles dryly) And Henry Gowen always tells the truth.
Sometimes, we only see the side of someone we want to see.
That's right.
And you only see the side of him you want to see.
You've always had a blind spot when it comes to that man.
- I might say the same about you.
- Did it ever occur to you that he's using you to get back at me? Henry would never hurt me.
Well, I wish I could be as sure of that as you are.
I keep hoping it's a dream and that I suddenly wake up.
Whatever happens, you should be proud of what you did with those kids.
I feel like I'm being tested.
God never gives us more than we can handle.
Of course not.
And I know I'm supposed to be strong and do the right thing But if you want to know the truth, I am tired of being tested.
Abigail.
Abigail Cody and Becky aren't going away forever.
You'll see them again.
I don't know why this is happening.
Neither do I.
But I know there's a plan.
And so do you.
(sobs) You're going to love your new home in Davenport.
There's a stream out back where you can catch tadpoles and skip rocks.
- I like playing baseball.
- You can do that, too.
And Becky, darling, as soon as we get settled, we can go shopping for a whole new wardrobe.
I think pink is your color.
Pink's nice.
Sorry to interrupt.
Miss Abigail wanted me to tell you that it's time to get ready for school.
(Elizabeth chuckles) - Guess they weren't very hungry.
- Or they didn't like the company.
Oh, they just need to get to know you.
- And they're probably a little scared.
- Of me? No.
Of the future.
Cody's gotten used to things here, and Becky was just starting to find her passion.
- Which is? - Science and math.
Oh, no.
She won't have time for that, with the social season starting.
Not if she's going to be presented this year.
Well, there's always time for things that you love.
And she is going to love being a debutante.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a few things to pick up at the Mercantile.
It's a pleasure seeing you again, Miss Thatcher.
You need to come to Hollywood when The Reluctant Bride is finished.
- You're just saying that to be kind.
- Don't take this the wrong way, but you are an investment to me.
- An investment? - Yes.
One picture is not going to make you a star, and it won't make me any money, but if you come to Hollywood and work hard, I guarantee you, by our third movie, you will be more famous than Mary Medford.
You can't guarantee that.
Hollywood is the city of dreams, Rosemary, and no one dreams bigger than I do.
I hear you're working for Gowen now.
He's paying me twice as much as I was making at the Mercantile.
I know you're always looking for the big payday.
Just don't do something you're going to regret.
I can take care of myself.
() If people keep making withdrawals, we may have to close down.
The last thing we need is a run on the bank.
There won't be any trouble, I promise, but I'm here if you need me.
I appreciate it.
Uh, Constable? I'm sorry, we can't give you the loan to buy that land, at least not until things get back to normal.
Don't worry about it, Mr.
Jenkins.
Most people aren't as nice as you.
We've only given one loan in the past month, and that was because Mr.
Barrett had half the down payment.
Wait a second.
Mr.
Barrett is buying the house he's renting? - The one next to Miss Thatcher? - He is.
Now, how is it he is so flush when everyone else is hurting? Could be he's on two payrolls.
We always thought there had to be an inside man.
Question is, who's he working for? The tire tracks leading up to the parcel where the trees were spiked You know, Jack, we just assumed those were from Gowen's car.
Because that's what someone wanted us to assume.
Do you like my project? I think it's fantastic.
But you might want to check how to spell "honey.
" Wow! Becky, the judge will be here in two days.
- Don't you want to finish the decking? - Why bother? Becky Aunt Carolyn won't let me go to school even if I win the scholarship.
You can't give up.
And you have to show your aunt what matters to you.
You've come so far, Becky.
You can't quit now.
() What's the latest? Won't be much longer.
Coulter's just about out of business.
Spiking those trees put him right on the edge.
As soon as I buy his operation, I'm gonna promote you to foreman in charge of all my mills.
Hard job to do when you're sitting in a cell.
() (grunts) Afraid you're out of a job.
() You've been cleared of the charges.
I think we should celebrate.
No, there's nothing to celebrate.
Don't you think this feud with Bill has gone on long enough? You're not married to him anymore, Nora.
You needn't defend him.
He made a mistake.
I'm sure he's sorry for it.
Well, that man won't quit until I'm ruined, and I won't let that happen.
I think you're making too much of this.
Well, I didn't ask your opinion.
You have to choose, Nora.
You're either with me or you're against me.
Now that this is over, you must have some free time on your hands.
Well, it sounds like you must have something in mind.
How would you feel if, this time, I made you dinner? Well I just might have to take you up on that.
Hmm! (chuckles) Why does she look so happy? I'll let you figure that out.
() You're seriously considering going to Hollywood? James thinks the theater is dying, and moving pictures are the future.
Well, that may be, but are they your future? Let's be honest.
I'm not getting any younger.
I don't have many chances left.
If I don't take this one, I don't know when I'll get another one, or if I'll get another one.
Well, if it's how you truly feel, then no you can't turn it down.
So you think I should go? Well, I think I think you should do whatever makes you happy.
I would come back between pictures.
It wouldn't be forever You can't You can't promise that.
You're not making this any easier.
Maybe the best I can manage right now is just to not make it any harder.
I never would've guessed that it was Barrett behind the sabotage.
I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I think I owe Henry Gowen an apology.
Well, Lee, you're not the only one.
Can't wait to tell my men we're back in business.
- Then why are you still here? - Good point.
Good point! Thank you.
Miss Thatcher.
Mr.
Coulter.
I just heard the news! Gowen is innocent? Yeah.
This time.
And Wade Barrett seemed so nice, and so helpful.
Should I start to worry about your judgment in men? I've made a good decision or two in the past.
(Cody, loudly): Ahem! Cody What are you doing here? I wanted to give you this before I go.
(paper crinkling) Oh, Cody it's beautiful.
I'm sorry it's not as nice as the one I broke.
I was saving up my allowance for a better one, but since I'm leaving This is every bit as nice.
And very special to me because it's from you.
Thank you so much.
(sighs) Constable Thornton? Can I ask you a favor? - Anything.
- It's not for me.
It's for Miss Abigail.
She said I was the man of the house, and now she's going to be alone, so, when I'm gone, could you look out for her? Yeah.
I promise.
I'll look out for her.
We all will.
Shake on it? () You've hardly touched your breakfast.
I'm not hungry.
I'm not anything right now.
It's okay to cry, Becky.
Maybe I'm being punished.
Maybe that's the reason I'm in this wheelchair.
That's not the reason at all.
Maybe you're so strong, you're being challenged.
Look at me.
- I'm not strong at all.
- Yes, you are.
You're a remarkable girl, with remarkable strength.
- Then why do I feel so scared? - That's part of the challenge.
Sometimes, even the strongest people are so paralyzed by what happened, that they'll do anything to avoid taking the one risk that might change their lives.
But what if nothing ever changes? Oh, but you have to have faith it will.
() - I'll take three of these as well.
- You have great taste, ma'am.
- I will wrap these up for you.
- Thank you.
Those are my favorite.
Oh! Who knew that such fine soaps could be found in such a quaint little town? Oh, we have a lot more to offer here than just fine soap.
Of course you do.
This is a wonderful place.
A little more rugged than I'm used to, but truly very charming.
Mrs.
Connors I know you have plans for Becky's future that don't include college.
Miss Thatcher, I care for my niece very much.
I don't want to see her throw away her life, like her mother did.
I don't understand.
I don't intend any disrespect to the children's father but their mother married a man beneath her means.
I just want something better for Becky, that's all.
But that's not what Becky wants.
She's just a child.
Becky's a brilliant girl.
She's years ahead of anyone her age, with a real gift, a real intellect.
Forgive me for being blunt, but "intellect" doesn't usually attract a husband.
But Becky can accomplish so much in life, if you'll only let her.
But now she's ready to give up.
She doesn't even want to walk again.
Did she say something to you? Why don't you come to the Science Fair? I think it would mean everything to her.
(striking peg) Didn't I ask you to stop doing things for me? Did you? Well, it must be the cold weather.
Sometimes, it affects my hearing.
Faith told me why you borrowed my locket.
You don't give up, do you? Not when it's something I care about.
Edith I am truly sorry if I got your hopes up.
I know your heart was in the right place.
That mean I can get back to work? That's my job.
Roy? I know I did wrong But do you think Can you forgive me? I want us to be a family.
I can't promise I'll be good at it.
You don't have to promise.
Would you like to meet your son? I'd like that very much.
(Oliver coos) (coos) () When I grow up, I'm going to be a bear doctor.
- You mean a veterinarian? - No.
A bear doctor.
There are some very impressive projects here.
Interesting.
How are you supporting the load? Half with suspension wires, half with trusses.
- Roebling's design.
- Her calculations are here.
- And you didn't help her? - No, sir.
(astonished chuckle) This is college-level work.
- And we have a winner! - Oh! (applause) - Is her mother here? - You can talk to me.
- You must be very proud.
- I am.
Even if she doesn't win the scholarship in the next round And, frankly, I don't see why she wouldn't She needs to enroll in a technical university that can help develop her talent.
I'll think about that.
Will the winner join me up front for a photo? Of course! Becky? () I'll go with you, if you're scared.
() () (applause) For a future movie star, you don't look very happy.
I've always believed that people should follow their dreams, except I don't really know what my dreams are anymore.
- Well, dreams can change.
- You think so? Sure! You came to Hope Valley in pursuit of a romance that was more important to you than becoming a star.
That didn't go exactly as I had planned.
Thanks to you, as I recall.
But you stayed anyway.
I guess this dear little town grew on me.
That's because you found a life here, and you never once felt incomplete.
Not until someone said you were missing something, something that you haven't needed for a very long time.
I wish it wasn't so confusing.
It's not.
Your heart called you here, Rosemary.
Listen to it.
Cody's only taking one bag? He's leaving everything else here.
I know this is hard for you, but I really believe this is the right thing for them.
I know you do.
Now First, no mushrooms.
- I'm sorry? - Cody loves gravy on his mashed potatoes, but he hates when mushrooms are in it.
No mushrooms in the gravy.
And don't make his bath water too hot.
He won't get in until it's lukewarm.
And when you tuck him into bed at night, he likes the covers up to his neck, but not too tight.
I'll remember that.
Abigail? Before I take them I'd really like your blessing.
Tell me you love those children as much as I do, and you'll have it.
All right.
I want to start on the window, and then pan over to the door for her entrance.
Well, there she is The "Reluctant Bride" herself, right on cue.
They say timing is everything.
Rosemary, you are breathtaking.
So Are you ready? James, I think we should talk.
() Here.
Take Brownie.
He'll protect you.
Oh (exhales) Becky, you're going to be just fine.
Promise you'll write? Pages and pages.
() I guess it's time to say goodbye.
() Please, don't let go.
I'm afraid I have to.
No.
You don't.
I want what's best for the children.
And you were right about what's best.
Does that mean we don't have to go? I should have seen it sooner.
Cody's happy here.
This is where he belongs.
What about Becky? Becky can stay until the scholarship competition next week.
- I can? - Yes, you can.
And even if you don't win, your uncle and I will pay to send you to the finest school in the country.
Thank you so much.
Are you sure it's what you want to do? I think so.
But I won't go if you don't want me to.
Will you come back when you're not in school? Of course I will! You're my brother.
There's no one in the world I love more than you.
Thank you.
I was trying so hard to do what I thought was right for them that I couldn't see that you're what's right.
- I hope you'll come and visit.
- I would love to.
Well, you're family.
You're welcome any time.
(chuckling) It's said there's a season and a time for everything.
For Cody, it's a time to start a new life with Abigail.
For Becky, a time to reach for the stars.
For Roy and Edith, a time to start over.
And for me? A time to hope.
I had another thought about your story.
Oh, I can't wait to hear it.
I noticed that y you don't have an ending yet.
That's because I keep changing it.
You need to build up to a memorable moment.
- You have anything in mind? - I do.
Mm-hmm? Mountie Theodore could save the day.
Or maybe the leading lady saves the day.
She's very handy with a pistol.
She's an expert horsewoman.
- Anything else? - Mm-hmm.
Her hair never gets messy.
And she's quite talented at whittling.
Whittling? She sounds like the perfect woman.
Pretty close to it.
But she's got to have some kind of weakness.
- She has one.
- Which is? Mountie Theodore.
() Hey.
Where is the, uh, the movie crew? They packed up and left.
(sighs) On the bright side, they let me keep the dress.
