La Piovra (1984) s03e07 Episode Script
Season 3, Episode 7
After the tragic events that permanently scarred his life, Corrado Cattani is alone.
He retires in a monastery where he meets Abbott Lovani.
But the rediscovered serenity is destined not to last.
After returning to Milan to assist an American federal agent, Bert Di Donato, who is on the trail of an international arms dealer called Kemal Yfter, Corrado, with a very courageous act, saves the young Greta from a kidnapping and he meets the Antinari family.
Corrado senses that the old Nicola, founder of the Antinari financial empire, is forming an alliance with the Mafia and with an old acquaintance of Corrado Mr Terrasini.
The Mafia's admission into the deal upsets all prior harmony.
Tano who is a young assistant of the old Nicola eliminates Dino.
Abbott Lovani, who had tried to help Corrado, is slaughtered at the monastery.
The Mafia's violence doesn't even spare in its cruelty, the innocent victim Anna, who is Giulia's mother.
Corrado's attempt to give up on a losing battle and to live only for himself and for Giulia's love is impossible at this point.
Corrado takes back the gun he had handed in to Abbott Lovani and goes to Rome.
The situation comes to a head.
Mr Mattinera, whom Abbott Lovani had turned to, is in reality the mysterious character implicated in the criminal deal with Yfter.
The Mafia was concerned about his psychological fragility and so decides to eliminate him.
While Giulia goes to the bank with Nicola to assume her place, Corrado returns to Sicily and he meets Inspector Di Venanzio.
He asks him to be readmitted into the police force.
He also meets Judge Venturi again.
Soon afterwards Corrado goes to Giulia and he flees from a Mafia trap Thanks only to Nicola's intervention, given his concern for his grand daughter.
In the meantime, Tano is instructed by the Mafia bosses to take over from Mr Terrasini.
The Octopus 3 See, I managed to do it.
- Mr Pastori - Yes? I need a way of getting across the city without anyone seeing me.
Come with me.
I'll take you in the laundromat's van.
- Where are we going? - To the port.
You can leave me there.
Come and get me later.
- Are you "The Fish?" - What do you want? I need to leave by sea as soon as possible.
What do you need? A job or a passage? A passage.
Towards an Arab country.
I've been told that perhaps there's a ship going there.
Perhaps.
Who are you running away from? - From a dead man.
- Dead people don't run.
Mine does.
There's nothing at the moment.
However, you know what these things are like.
They can change from one day to another.
And how many days? It depends.
Do you need a fast boat? I've got one for five large bills.
Go in there and play.
It's loaded.
It fires and it's got three loaded barrels.
The serial number has been removed.
But what are you really after? Because I can give you this gun in two ways.
Like this or like this.
You're an expert, hey? Listen.
I haven't come here to play.
Do you understand? I need to leave in two days time.
If you continue to be an arsehole, I'll shoot a hole through your stomach! Don't joke around like that! I don't like it.
Can't you understand that I'm in danger and that I need to get on board? I have a dead man on my back.
Do you read the newspapers or not? And anyway this gun is crap.
It's not even worth half of what you're asking.
- But it's perfect! It's a jewel! - Here.
This is the money for the gun and the deposit for boarding.
Look, you need five million lire just to get out of territorial waters.
Things have become more difficult.
Which boat are you talking about? Is it fast? The one that concerns you isn't fast but it's secure.
Nobody will touch it.
How's that? A ship that goes to an Arab country doesn't get searched? - Why should I trust you? - It's protected in Heaven.
- When does it leave? - Tomorrow.
Come at two in the morning and you'll leave before daylight.
- What's the ship called? - What do you care? Just come to the loading dock tomorrow night and say that I sent you.
Give me any name whatsoever so you can be identified.
I'll need to tell the captain.
Tell him"The Robin.
" Why are you telling me these things only now? One of the reasons why old people exist is to tell young people about their mistakes so that they are not repeated.
You knew about dad! You knew they would've killed him! Why didn't you do anything? Why? The point to which Carlo had lead things, I couldn't do anything.
It was in the rules.
And it's the rules, Giulia, not people, that kill.
No no, I don't understand you.
I really don't understand you you know.
The death of an important man like your father can't be decided only by one person.
At that level, all deaths are planned by an unchangeable mechanism which is stronger than any desires and any whims.
Someone needed to even things out.
The scales weren't tipped in favour of your father.
The rules demand that the scales are always balanced.
And when my father was killed the scales weren't in favour of Dino, is that how it works? Exactly and we levelled them out again.
So it means that it was you that had Dino killed? Well then, this means it will never end.
So it's nothing but a chain of revenge.
No, no revenge.
Revenge is only an instinct and that's why it's always wrong.
The rules don't allow unnecessary deaths: they are stupid and damaging.
Dino wasn't killed for revenge, but only to put an end to his careless account keeping.
It's a bit like when the board of directors has to deliberate we come to an agreement and then we eliminate pending liabilities.
And this kind of board of directors, like you call it, couldn't meet earlier? Couldn't it have saved my father and my mother's lives? No.
Even if I'd offered my life, I wouldn't have been able to save Carlo's, whom I adored, and Anna's, whom I loved very much.
- My power is great like yours will be soon but - I don't want your power.
I don't want it! It's stained with mud and blood.
All you do is talk.
It disgusts me! Can't you see yourself, grandpa? Can't you?! You're talking of my father's death as though it were a hitch! He was your son! He was your son! Have you forgotten? No! Leave me alone! - Listen, Giulia.
- Let me be! Don't touch me! I don't belong to you! I'm not one of your objects.
I'm not a deal.
I'm not a bank.
I no longer want to see nor hear from you grandpa! Stay away from me! Stay away or else just stay away! Come on, come on! All aboard! Quickly! Ok, Mr Pastori.
Good, morning sir.
There's someone asking for you at the door.
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
Good morning.
Giulia! - Corrado, I need to talk to you.
- Why have you come here? - You shouldn't have! - Let's go somewhere where we can be alone.
- What's happened? - It's important.
Please - Ok.
Open up! Come on! Where are we going? Far away.
- Why have you brought me here? - To talk.
Come.
I want to make love.
Corrado, let's go away.
Listen, tomorrow there's the bank's board meeting and I don't want to be there.
Let's go away.
You come with me.
Let's run away from here.
We'll go far away away from everyone.
- Giulia Giulia I can't leave.
Look look I've bought two tickets for Paris, for tomorrow morning departing from Rome.
go and live together.
We'll have a family we'll get ajob we'll live a normal life like everyone else.
- But I can't run away.
I cannot run away Giulia.
It wouldn't be right.
What are you talking about? For whom isn't it right? For all the people I've loved and who are no longer here.
And for many others.
For people whom I perhaps haven't even met but are dead - for not having to always say yes.
- But you have given so much to these people.
You have sacrificed your life.
That's enough now, Corrado.
- need to think about yourself.
Forget the past, Corrado.
- And how can I? Just do it.
You do it by living again.
It's possible Look, all things considered, everything that's happened was a choice.
Do you understand that I chose to know and not to turn a blind eye.
It's just that when you arrived, for the first time I Enough, please.
Enough about the past.
I thought that I could've renounced everything.
Yes.
And that I could've turned a blind eye to the fact that your family is against everything I've ever fought for.
But it's no longer possible, do you understand? grandfather is a criminal and I will place him in front of a - Keep quiet! I no longer want to listen to you and I no longer want to hear about this war.
- I can't tolerate it any more! - Giulia, I'm on the side of the people you've lost.
- I'm on your mother's side, I'm on your father's side, I - They are dead, Corrado! They are dead and nobody can bring them back to me.
Not even you, not even justice, not even your truth! Nobody! Do you know what the worst thing is? It's that everything could've been so everything could've been so beautiful.
Really.
Giulia I I love you.
That's not enough.
You're like my grandfather.
Even you have your "rules.
" First comes the world, justice and the others, and then comes me.
I would always be alone with you.
Just like in this moment.
So you're leaving me on my own? Good evening, Inspector.
- Aren't you Judge Venturi's shadow? - I'm the shadow of those who feel the heat and the judge told me to cool you down.
- Thank you.
- It's my duty, Inspector.
Here I am grandpa.
I've come back to take my place.
And from tomorrow, in your place.
Is it ok like this? Come here.
Give me a kiss.
- Are you a friend of the "Fish?" - What's your name? - I'm the "Robin.
" - Have you got the money? - On the ship.
- No.
We want it beforehand.
- On the ship.
- We want the money straight away.
- No way.
Well then? - Well then, I said straight away.
Cool it.
- So, which is the ship I need to board? - The "Panamense.
" - What's it carrying? - Nothing cars.
Listen, you turd, that ship is transporting something else.
So, tell me what's on it! I swear, only cars.
There's nothing else on the boat! Why did you attack me? The "Fish" asked but the captain said no.
No passengers.
So we thought we'd steal some money from you.
That's not true.
You need to load something particular.
What is it? Until yesterday we had to load a Mercedes for a rich Arab.
That's a rare machine Which one is the Mercedes? Let me go! It's that one.
Then they said not to load anything else.
- Which one? - The white one.
Well then, the goods are on the wharf and these are the documents.
It's all in order, Mr Leibnits.
I hope you're happy.
Neither happy nor sad.
It's all the same for me.
- I only have to deliver.
- So, can we take the Mercedes? - I've already given orders for the shipment.
- Good.
You tell Mr Antinari to stay calm.
As soon as we're out of the port, a telex will be sent immediately with a credit payment.
And please thank him.
His co-operation has been a very precious thing for me.
I won't forget it.
Uranium.
Radioactive material for nuclear arms.
Three atomic bombs to the value of one thousand billion lire.
So there, that's what it was! Do you want to know something Tano? I really must confess it.
I'm a bit moved at the thought of sitting at the table With the board of directors of the Antinari Bank.
I told you Salvo.
Great business affairs It's the only way of earning respect from friends.
What's wrong? Have you lost your tongue? I'm happy sir.
You really deserved it.
Stop Salvo.
Why? There's an old drunk lying on the ground by the road.
- Perhaps someone might hit him.
- What a kind heart, Tano! Let's go back to the hotel.
This car is dirty.
Have it cleaned.
Send this telex.
Quickly! - They're already heading out to sea! - What do you mean, heading out? On a ship heading for international waters and it's to do with uranium! Uranium? Let's go, hurry! "Dear Giulia, my darling, I can't wait to hug you again.
Here at Semio I feel much better.
Come and join me as soon as possible.
I feel like going on a long trip with you and, I want to keep the promise I made to you when we said good bye.
I'll explain everything that has happened lately.
I ordered at Moncada, do you remember, that Sicilian jeweller a little gift for you.
I feel I have a lot to be forgiven for.
Tomorrow the sailor will come.
He will send the tape to you in Milan Good bye darling.
See you soon.
" We've just gone beyond Linosa Island.
They're heading towards international waters.
Full steam ahead! Fan out.
Spread out more! What shall we do? Attention, please! Stop! Attention please, stop! Stop your engines! Stop or we'll open fire! Stay over them! Ready with the warning shots.
Open fire! Throw the car overboard! Come on, hurry! Quick, quick get a move on, come on, hurry! The brief case with all the documents.
They're throwing it overboard! - Mr Venturi, they are throwing it overboard, look! - What? Slow down.
Let's close in.
Be ready.
Go, go! Down there! All together with your hands up! Move it! Leave me alone! You can't arrest me! I'm a foreign citizen.
Good bye Bert.
Rest in peace.
"Luxemburg Union Bank, please credit to the Antinari Bank's head office in Milan the amount previously agreed on.
Kemal Yfter.
" We should be worried about Nicola Antinari.
We'll have to freeze the payment.
Then I'll organise his arrest.
Do you feel up to going? Headquarters just called.
They have just notified us to get to Macaletta, north of the old dock yard.
I had convened you here today in the hope of being able to tell you about the recovery to take place, from our difficult financial situation.
Unfortunately, some bad news that I've just received, forces me to a change of program.
They only way to save our banks is to remove dead wood and then, restructure the holding.
We will withdraw all our preference stocks and the Hong Kong Bank will fall sharply together with other minor banks linked with our Asian market.
We will need to acquire a new legal bill to repair the mistakes made under the direction of the late Dino Alessi.
And now, with your consent, I would like to discuss the bank which bears my name.
You know that in order to save it, misfortune has come to my family.
We have paid dearly.
Too much.
My son's life and that of his wife.
All this has really tested me.
Therefore, I have decided to hand over my position.
Please welcome the new director, my grand daughter, Giulia to whom I hand over forty per cent of the parcel of shares.
Furthermore, I have decided to hand over eleven per cent to Gaetano Cariddi, who for many years has been my friend and advisor.
Thanks to him, many billions will flow into our coffers every year and it will help us to recover financially.
The documents are already prepared.
All you need to do is sign.
I now please ask you to excuse me.
We will discuss the details another time.
I wish to be alone for a while.
Thank you.
I imagine you must be very proud of your arrests.
I instead don't care.
I had already foreseen this too.
I was expecting you.
I won't ask you to sit down.
I believe you must be in a lot of hurry.
I am, as a matter of fact.
Tell me Mr Cattani, do you really believe you've won? I don't know if there is anyone who has won but I do know that you have lost.
It's something bigger than you or me that has won; MONEY! I am going.
I'm stepping down but Giulia and Tano are the future of my bank.
You, on the other hand, after years of battle, what do you come away with? The body of a lawyer who was no longer worth anything and me the refuse of an old theatre.
Allow me, do you mind? In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
May your soul rest in peace.
Amen.
Hello, Giulia.
- Have you come to arrest me too? - No, I've come here to talk to you.
No, it's late.
I have to leave.
Listen, how many times did you tell me that you wanted to be happy? How many times? Look at what you've got left by your side.
Him! Look at him! Look at him! That's not a man! That's a monster! Let me go! He stayed next to your grandfather and he sucked his blood day after day.
Why have you come here? To watch us cry? Well nobody's crying here.
You see? And you know why? Because my grandfather was like the rest of them and perhaps even worse.
I made a mistake with him like I did with you.
I loved him too much and I don't know whether or not he deserved it.
Don't let them destroy you like they destroyed your father.
I won't be like my father.
I've learnt my lesson.
No, wait.
Don't go away.
Giulia, I beg you.
Stay with me.
- You said you didn't want this life.
- Leave me, Corrado.
- Now, why, why? - Let me go!! Tell me why! I don't want you to go away.
I want to be with you do you understand? I don't want to see you anymore! Let me go!! - Greta! - Stay back! We're going now sweetheart.
We're going home.
Are you happy? Greta! You're always more beautiful! Do you carry it always with you? They have many desires beautiful big only that they never achieve them.
And so Monk Bernard says, "This is Corrado.
The man who seeks.
" Let's go Greta.
Give it to me Corrado.
We need to go.
No.
Listen, don't bring her with you.
Leave her with the country folk at the monastery.
She'll be fine with the other children.
Come Greta, let's go.
Come sweetheart, come, come on.
Corrado Corrado Corrado! - Greta! - Corrado! - But he won.
- No.
He lost.
And by a lot.
Speech! Speech! Speech! Long live the bride and groom! Congratulations! Speech! Speech! Speech! Thank you, but I I don't know how to make a speech.
What can I say? Well, I can start by saying that I'm happy, hey? Yes, I'm happy about this marriage celebrated in here amongst these walls in which we so live, neither well nor badly.
However, we manage to live.
We need to live also for those we've loved and who are no longer with us.
We live trying to speak out at what isn't just and to fight against those who wouldn't want us to speak out.
Instead we do speak out.
There, I believe it is important to speak even when there's nobody there to listen.
Because someone is always there.
Outside of these kind of trenches, there are people.
We don't see them but they do exist, don't they? They're out there.
There are those who say that ordinary people have small desires? It's not true! - They have these desires, big and beautiful, only they don't realise them and so and so that's why we remain silent.
You come home from work and you sit in front of the television only to feel dismayed hearing about enormous corruption and huge scandals, huge powers criminals who often escape justice.
I know what one feels because all this happened to me.
Along the road that lead me here, I came to know of a financial empire built on bloodshed, a politician who undersold our country, arms trafficking, millions of deaths and then the Mafia! This kind of tumour that spreads in the whole country's body and who knows how far it will go.
It binds together crime, money, deceit I know what one feels alone, abandoned, but no! We do exist! And every one of us, like many others, plays their part.
Well, of course, sometimes sometimes we're afraid because we're not heroes.
We are ordinary people like all the others with our fears, our uncertainties, our yearnings, our crosses.
You know that, don't you? I I've lost everything and all that I have left is you.
This big family that lives in here by choice.
And then there are the two of you, Michele and Lucia.
And my heart felt wish for you both is that you can soon leave from that door over there, without fear.
Together stroll down the main street and blend in with the other people go into a café, go down to the beach and cuddle on the sand.
And then of course, I hope you have children.
To see them grow up happily by your side To see them grow up like like it wasn't possible for me.
Perhaps a bit smaller than Michele who needs to have everything tailor made! You know in my opinion, you need courage to live as you do.
A lot of courage to live as all of you do.
The End

The End
