Make It or Break It (2009) s03e07 Episode Script

Truth Be Told

Red Tanner desperately needs your help.
This is uncharted territory.
An athlete's heart is very different from a normal heart.
I'm so lucky I found someone like you.
I feel just as lucky.
So her heart is broken? More like her heart is unique.
Just like me.
The average heart beats somewhere between sixty to 90 times per minute.
Occasionally, in Lauren's case, it beats much faster, resulting in less time for the heart muscle to relax between contractions, ultimately causing her black outs.
And you don't need to cut her open to fix this? The procedure is done intravenously.
We'll insert a catheter through her veins and transmit radio waves directly to her heart, changing its electrical rhythm.
Most of my patients have had positive results with this procedure, and they're able to return to their lives within a matter of days.
Have I answered all your questions? - Thank you, doctor.
- You're welcome.
I'll check in with you later.
Yes.
The meals here taste like cardboard slop.
Now, chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, that's some serious eating.
Well, if that cardboard slop can help me land a full twist dismount on vault, I would eat it breakfast, lunch and dinner.
You'll get it.
We can work on it in practice.
Wait, are you actually offering to help me? - I can be nice! - Really? Besides, if I have to be stuck with you in London you'd better be burning that vault.
Is that Kaylie Cruz and Jordan Randall? Oh, my God, look at you two, you're all grown up.
Coach Ray? Is that really you?! - Last time I checked.
- Oh, my God! Uh, how's the Florida camp? Do you still have that crazy petting zoo? Welcome to the USA Training Center, Coach Keegan.
Coach McIntire.
I'm a huge fan of yours.
Likewise.
We're lucky to have you.
Wait, are you working with us? - For how long? - Ah, ah, ah! You'll just have to wait until tomorrow for the announcement.
Until tomorrow, ladies.
Bye.
That was a blast from the past.
Did you know he was coming? I had no idea.
It almost blows my mind Nice jammies.
If you're big game hunting, I surrender.
Are you seriously making fun of me the night before I have heart surgery? Get over yourself, Tanner.
I plan on making your life miserable all the way to London.
You should be so lucky.
Hey, I've got Otis, remember? I don't need any more luck than that.
- Hi.
- Uh, thank God! I've been trying to get rid of him for an hour.
I think I've hit her last nerve.
My job here is done.
You two take care of my favorite Barbie, OK? What's with the cute guy glued to your bedside? Please, he just came by to rub Otis in my face.
- Sure, that's exactly why he was here for an entire hour.
- Oh, yeah.
That meathead is not Lauren Tanner approved.
And besides, Payson's the one we should be grilling for deets.
What's up with lover boy? What happened? We made love in a tent in his dorm room.
It was pretty romantic.
You traded in your V-card? - How was it? - Amazing.
See, don't you wish you came into the fold sooner? No.
Not at all.
I wasn't ready before this.
I grew up a lot this year, I'm a different person now.
It happened because I waited and being with Rigo made it special.
That's That's great, Pay.
I'm sorry, Kaylie.
We don't need to talk about this right now - if you don't want to.
- Hello? Yeah, we do.
It's fine.
Just because Austin and I broke up doesn't mean I don't want to know what's going on with you.
Payson Keeler isn't a virgin anymore.
I always thought you'd be next, Kaylie, like, really, who would've thought that Payson would've beat you to the cherry pop? Lauren! Dr.
Walker.
Hi.
Did I tell you I'm going to dedicate my gold medal to you when I kill it in London? Modest, isn't she? We'll see you tomorrow, Lo.
Dr.
Walker, we just wanted to thank you again for doing Lauren's surgery.
- Oh - Yeah, you really have no idea what it means to all of us to have her back on the team.
Bye.
That kind of positive energy is gonna be a big help during your recovery.
They'll be an even bigger help in getting me back in shape at the gym.
Lauren, I want to be clear, this surgery is not a miracle cure.
There's a reason I didn't originally consider you as a candidate.
But I'm a candidate now, so We have no idea how your heart's going to react until after the procedure's done.
But I'll be recovered in time to compete for Trials, right? I mean, you said most of your patients are back to normal within days.
You're not most patients.
You're an entirely new test subject, and I'm afraid I can't make you any promises.
In fact, Lauren, there's a very real chance you won't be ready in time.
Good morning, Wendy.
You know, you could have left your drug screening sample in the bathroom, like the rest of the girls do.
Actually, I was hoping you can go over the banned substances with me.
I think I'm getting a cold, but I'd hate to take something that I'm not supposed to.
You know, now that we're close to Trials I assume Coach wants us randomly screened more often, don't ya think? Better to be safe than sorry.
You should always read the ingredients on the box before taking anything, but make sure not to take any of these flu meds.
One of the main active ingredients is pseudoephedrine.
And that would be bad, right? If you get caught with that in your system, it would be automatic elimination.
Hm.
So, take in lots of fluids and get lots of extra rest.
Thanks Mrs.
M! - Is that Coach Ray? - Mm-hm.
I remember you telling me about how much fun you used to have at his rhythmic camp when you were a kid.
Coach Ray is the reason why I fell in love with gymnastics.
Obviously he is a great coach.
Didn't he help you create your famous "layout Jordan?" Listen up, ladies.
Olympic Trials are right around the corner.
To help punch up your floor routines, the NGO has been kind enough to send us expert choreographer, Coach Ray Keegan.
Thanks Coach, um First off, I want to say it's an honor to be here.
I'm here to help you in any way I can, even if it's just to be a fresh pair of eyes on a routine.
I'm staying on campus all week.
I'm available to you 24/7.
My door is always open.
OK, ladies, let's get to it.
Oh my, what is your name? Wendy Capshaw! Wendy Capshaw.
Show me what you got.
- What's up? - Austin broke up with Kaylie.
- No way - Hey.
I guess word travels fast when the golden couple shatters.
So, how are you doing since boy wonder bounced? He didn't just bounce, he basically said I destroyed his life.
Well, that gives you credit.
According to him, the only reason anybody was interested in him was because of me.
And he has no interest in being "Mr.
Cruz.
" You know, it's kind of funny how we spend all this time trying to be perfect and win, and then when we get there, it just alienates people.
OK, look, sorry, I'm not really used to this girlfriend thing.
You're really lucky to have Payson and Lauren.
Yeah, well, I'm not about to pull Payson off of her cloud nine and Lauren she's got bigger problems than I do.
I'm fine.
I'll totally get over it.
Yeah, you will, but that doesn't mean you have to put up with these snots.
Yo, beat it unless you want one.
- Thank you.
- No problem.
Look, you should really put some of that hurt you're feeling in your routines.
Let it drive you.
That's what I do.
Whoopsie! Your leg was bent on that one.
It's OK, I got a fix for that.
All right, now, show me your grand battement to the front.
All right, arabesque back.
- Now Feel that? - Mm-hm.
You need to feel that when you leap.
- Got it? - Mm-hm.
OK.
You're good, Wendy, but you need to be flawless with this kind of competition.
Speaking of the C word, of all the girls here, if you had to guess, who would you say would be my biggest competition? That's really not my place to say.
I'm sorry, I don't mean to put you in a pickle.
I just kind of want a hint so I can use it as a learning tool, you know? Someone to look up to.
Well, if I had to guess, I'd say Kaylie Cruz.
She's your top gun here.
Even when she was a kid, I could tell that she was destined for the Olympics.
It'll be our little secret.
Jordan, your turn to work with Coach Keegan.
Sorry Coach.
Not enough time.
I took longer than I thought with Wendy.
And I, uh, I have an appointment with the physical therapist.
I overdid it on bars.
My shoulder's been acting up.
Hey, I want you stretching more each morning.
- You got it? - Mm-hm.
OK.
I've been working on her attitude but, man, it has been a challenge.
One minute she seems engaged and part of the team and the next Well, you know how competitive she is.
Yeah, it's an amazing asset.
The problem with Jordan is that not only is she competitive with herself, like most gymnasts are, but she's competitive with the other girls.
She has a jealous streak that can make sportsmanship a challenge for her.
Have you noticed that? Hmm.
I never thought of it as jealousy.
Just watch her reaction when you start to invest in the other girls.
Now, it's understandable because, the poor girl, she's had so little in her life.
I've been trying to get her to do the layout Jordan and she absolutely refuses to every time.
I created that move with her.
Let me try to get her to do it.
That would be a huge help.
I'm glad you're here, Ray.
Glad to be here.
And don't you worry for one minute, honey, you're gonna be just fine, it'll all be over before you know it.
- I know, Daddy.
- Everything will be, you know, fine.
- Wait! Hold on! - You're here.
Of course.
We're in this together.
- We love you, Lo.
- I love you guys too.
OK.
Time for us to let Dr.
Walker work his magic on our girl.
- Bye.
OK.
- It's gonna be all right.
Everything went smoothly.
She's resting now, but she'll be able to leave the hospital - as soon as she wakes up.
- That's such great news.
We gave her an echocardiogram after her surgery.
It showed us that currently, her heart is still exhibiting random abnormalities in its rhythm.
I want her to come in for a daily cardiac stress test for the next 72 hours to see if that rhythm is her new heartbeat.
Well, does that mean she's still sick? There's no need for concern yet, I've seen this before in non-athletic patients post-surgery.
And they turned out better than ever, right? They're leading healthy, perfectly normal lives.
What if What if normal isn't good enough? Your Swan Lake gets more and more beautiful each time you perform.
- Really? - Mm-hm.
'Cause I'm worried it's starting to get a little stale.
I was thinking if I came out of the two and a half - with a leap - Don't worry about the flash, Payson, your strength is the dance, not the tumbling.
But my routine would be stronger.
Stick with this routine.
It's consistent.
That's what Coach McIntire and the NGO want from their leadoff position.
I've never been a leadoff position.
Ever.
I was always the person sent out last, to take home the win.
I'm only going off the intel I was given by your coach.
Is there a problem, Payson? Yeah, is it true? Do you consider me a leadoff position? Coach, give us a minute, OK? Sure thing.
If you were to make it to London, then yes, I see you as our girl to start the competition ball rolling.
Coach, I'm better than the gymnast that just goes out there and sets the bar for everyone else to surpass.
I have what it takes to be an anchor.
Look Ever since your back surgery, you've been performing consistent routines that bring in good scores, but they're not anchor-level scores.
Now, you may have been able to anchor in Boulder, but if you make it to London, what you've been bringing won't cut it.
Then train me harder.
Please.
Just let me do a stronger floor routine.
Payson, I'm not telling you this to discourage you.
I think you have an excellent shot at making the US Team.
That's why I've been grooming you to be our leadoff.
It's the best spot for our consistently safe performer.
You think I'm safe? Everyone going to London will be there as part of a team.
The only important thing then is for you to have the best performance of your life and help your country win gold.
Not only does he not see me as the star of the team, he doesn't even think I'm good enough to raise the bar - in the middle of the competition.
- Maybe he'll change his mind.
To him, I'm just a sacrificial lamb.
I am the gymnast you send out to the judges for slaughter! OK, let's put this down.
Look, Pay, I know that that was hard for you to hear but did you consider what else he said? I mean, Coach McIntire practically said that you have a spot on the 2012 Team.
Of course, to go to London at all would be amazing, but But gymnastics isn't just about team medaling.
I get it.
We both know that the leadoff position never wins an individual medal.
And I have sacrificed so much.
I want a gold medal.
No one here wants it more! I'm sorry.
I'm so sorry, Kaylie.
I'm all worked up here.
Yeah.
You know what feels weird to me? For the last ten years, all we've talked about is getting there together.
"We'll make it to Nationals together, to Worlds together, to the Olympics together.
" But we all can't stand on top of that platform together.
There's only one gold medal.
- Hi, girls.
- Hi! You're back! I thought you were still recovering.
I wasn't spending one more day staring at that tacky wallpaper in my dad's hotel room.
Besides, I can practically hear the beam calling my name.
Tanner, my office.
Get ready to get your butts kicked.
The Queen of the Beam is back.
She's been out of the gym a long time.
Yeah.
She'll just have to train that much harder to fight her way back.
I can always tell it's Rigo by the look on your face.
Kaylie, if you ever want to talk about Austin - I'm fine.
- I know you are.
And you'll find true love too, I know it.
Thanks, Pay.
You can't kick me out, my surgery worked! Dr.
Walker told me himself, he does not want you doing any strenuous exercise until he's positive your heart can handle it.
OK, fine, then give me a day.
When can I be back? Tomorrow? When your doctor gives me the OK.
Until then, I can't have you here.
This is crazy! If I can't work out, how am I gonna be ready in time for Olympic Trials? You won't be.
Look, I know it's not fair, but the truth is, injuries and illnesses keep other gymnasts out of the game all the time.
But I am not any other gymnast.
- I'm sorry, Lauren.
- You can't do this to me! We can't take the risk, honey.
You have to leave.
Sunset I've waited for you all day I've waited for you You know, I used to make fun of googley-eyed couples like us all of the time.
And now I'm a part of one.
Well, I can put on some shades, so you don't have to look into my eyes.
Don't you dare, I love your eyes.
I just want to make sure that you're OK.
You know, since we took that whole "big step" in the tent? - Doofus.
- What?! You said you weren't gonna have sex until after you won gold at the Olympics.
And last time I checked, the Colorado Rockies aren't in London.
So, I just wanted to make sure that you know, you don't regret anything.
There is absolutely nothing that I regret about our relationship.
It may sound corny, but being with you has really helped me find myself.
Which is why it is so, so frustrating that my coach can't see that.
Well, he can't ignore the real Payson Keeler for long.
She's a pretty impressive person and that's kind of hard to miss.
Oh, now who's being corny? Blue moon It's shining there for us now It's following us around The room Just you, just you, just you, just you Just you, just you, just you, just you Sunset I've waited for you all day I've waited for you all day My love Kaylie.
I was actually making this for you.
It's my mom's favorite smoothie.
I heard you crying in your room and thought you could use a little TLC.
That's sweet, Wendy.
Are you OK? No.
But I will be.
Too bad there's not a surgery for your kind of broken heart.
Look, I know you haven't had the easiest time here with some of the other girls.
It's just hard always being the youngest.
I look up to all of you.
Well, it doesn't have to be hard.
Just be yourself.
People will like you.
That means so much coming from you.
Drink up.
Smoothies are best when they're fresh.
Mm.
That's exactly what I needed.
Thank you.
My pleasure.
Can you please tell me what we're doing here? - I feel ridiculous.
- Shh.
Calm heart.
That is what I need to pass those stress tests and that's what I need to get back in the gym.
He is like seriously good at this.
Apparently, a man of many talents.
What? I'm just saying.
There is nothing going on between us.
Trust me.
Jake said this was how the wrestlers would find their centers before matches, so I figured it was worth a try.
Just be patient, Lo.
You'll get there.
I know it.
I have no time to be patient.
If Dr.
Walker doesn't give me a clean bill of health, then Coach McIntire won't let me train and I won't be ready for Trials.
Well then, that's not an option.
If calm is what you need, then calm is what you get.
Yeah, we got your back, Lo.
Every step of the way.
Ladies, please! Less talking more Zen.
We're all warrior athletes here.
- OK, Lauren, you can stop now.
- Oh.
That was nothing, I feel great, I can keep going if you want me to.
You're still experiencing some abnormal spikes, we don't want to push things.
Oh, but I'm fine, I swear.
I actually didn't get any symptoms at all.
That's because I stopped you before you had too many consecutive spikes.
You keep saying that.
I know.
Your heart needs longer to heal.
Trust me, you're getting stronger every day.
Far faster than any other patient I've ever had.
But not fast enough.
If Lauren weren't a professional athlete, - would you say she's fine? - Yes, technically, if she was just going to be working a desk job or going grocery shopping, then there wouldn't be any need for this concern.
But I'm running out of time.
I might be able to get through a whole routine without my heart freaking out.
You don't know because you won't let me try.
Dr.
Walker, if Lauren were performing and you were able to stop her before she had too many spikes, like you did just now, would she still be OK? Yes.
But I can't attach all this monitoring equipment to her while she's flipping on a four inch beam.
That's the only way we know if she's gonna be OK.
Right, but nowadays there are all kinds of things that work without wires.
That's true.
My phone, a remote, there's tons of wireless devices.
What if you could monitor me that way without me being tied to all this stuff? Could she perform then? Pay.
You are not a workhorse, or a sacrificial lamb, and you're definitely not the safe girl.
Look up there.
My girl is light.
And the way I see it you're the brightest light of them all.
How is it possible that you always know exactly what to say to make me feel better? Well, that's because I love you.
I love you, too.
Ooh! Ah Payson? What? Oh, my God, was my dancing stupid? I'm so sorry, I just got into it.
Payson, Payson, you look amazing! That right there, the way you were moving, that's what you should do in your floor routine.
They think your safe? Go prove them wrong.
This is a wireless ringing device.
OK, Lauren, go ahead and do a few jumping jacks for me.
As long as Lauren's heart stays within this range, she's fine.
OK, Lauren, you can stop now.
What What was that? What just happened? That's the abnormal spike we've been monitoring all week.
Right, but is she OK? Daddy, please, I'm fine.
One spike won't harm her, two, three, four.
But five in a row gets her into risky territory.
What kind of risky territory? Five consecutive spikes will cause her to start experiencing symptoms and possibly be in danger of fainting.
No, no, no, no.
Look, I I didn't realize that there was still that kind of risk.
Lauren, I can't allow this.
That's the point of the wireless device.
It will enable us to minimize the danger.
Dad, I'm at risk every time I get up on that beam whether I have a heart condition or not.
This is my one and only chance.
Coach? She deserves this chance, Steve.
You gotta let her try.
OK.
I don't like this, but OK.
All right then, all we have to do now is decide who will be monitoring Lauren.
I won't be here and I realize it's a tremendous responsibility I'll do it.
Uh I've worked with these types of machines and I'm used to monitoring these girls for all types of reasons.
I'd be honored to do it.
Then let's get started.
Lauren, you ready to give this a try? - It's now or never, so, yeah, I'm ready.
- OK.
- Should we stop her? - She's still fine.
Stop.
Uh, I got caught up in what I was doing, I'm sorry.
Don't be sorry, you did great.
In fact, you worked your heart much more today than you did yesterday.
Based on what just happened, when is it safe for her to come back and train? Another two days should do the trick.
I can't say for certain.
We'll reassess then the possibility of you competing.
Thanks.
It's just another two days.
That's 48 hours, - you can do this.
- It's not that.
When Dr.
Walker told me to stop, it was the first time ever in my entire gymnastics life that I felt afraid.
Just, that beam, it's been a part of me, it's been like another arm or another leg, and today, it felt outside of me.
I know what you're going through.
You just you have to make it a part of you again.
I can't train.
How am I supposed to overcome this? With your mind.
So much of our success out there has to do with how we perform mentally.
You have to use your mind to train, go over your whole routine, piece by piece, exactly like if you were performing it.
That's what I did when I broke my back.
Did it work? I'm here, aren't I? Just trust that your physical muscle memory, it'll know what to do and it'll just do it.
Hey, Lauren.
You are Queen of the Beam.
You are irreplaceable, the best I have ever seen and you cannot forget that.
Hey guys! How'd your test-thingy go, Lauren? Fine.
Well, if you need any help getting back up to speed, just let me know.
Coach Ray said I was Princess of the Beam.
- Isn't that great? - Yeah, just peachy.
Looks like Queen of the Beam just got overthrown.
You missed our training session again.
- Your shoulder OK? - It's fine.
- You should move this bag - I said it's fine.
Jordan, I know what's going on.
I understand, I do.
You're mad at me.
You see me working with the other girls and you're hurt by it.
You're jealous because you think that I've given up on you.
- Whatever.
- No.
Jordan, it's not "whatever.
" Look, you and I had a very special bond, but I just couldn't be your private coach anymore.
It wasn't fair.
You know that.
We had to move on.
I did everything I could to help you be the best.
And by the looks of things, I did a pretty good job.
I never abandoned you.
And I never, ever stopped believing in you.
Deep breath into your nose hold it and now exhale through your mouth.
OK, now I want you to repeat after me.
- I, Lauren - I, Lauren am going to embrace the power of my mind Just say it.
Am going to embrace the power of my mind.
Now, I want you to visualize what I'm saying, but not the big picture, the things that make what you do unique.
The elements of your routine that are one hundred percent Lauren Tanner.
OK? You approach the beam.
You start your routine with a killer mount.
Next, you move into a flashy aerial series.
Now you slither to some really hot salsa moves.
Now some pivot turns into a leap series.
Now, go stick that double full dismount.
Deep breath.
Push past the fear, Tanner.
Because behind it, you'll find your courage.
I promise.
I did it! I know you did.
Now keep that belief in yourself and you'll be unstoppable.
How did you know my entire routine? You're always making fun of me and calling them flippity-flips.
Come on, Tanner.
When you admire someone, you want to know everything they do.
I'm sorry, am I interrupting something? I was just getting some training in.
You two have fun doing your little flippity-flips.
Training? I took your advice, use my mind.
How'd it feel? Perfect.
Are you ready? You all set? Yeah, you know, maybe we could just scrap this whole thing, I really appreciate you being so willing to help me, but I can't hear you.
Mm-mm.
OK, I'm terrified.
Push past that fear, Payson.
Because behind it, you'll find your courage.
Now come on, let's get some sizzle up in here! - Woo! - God.
All right, let's see what you're made of.
Hey, you want some tea? Are you OK? All right.
Look, I know something's up with you and I don't want to cross any lines, but if you want to talk, I'm here.
Hi, roomies! Hope you weren't waiting up for me.
It's late.
Where were you? Coach Ray offered to help me some more.
He is just so terrific! We got a bite to eat and watched some Olympic training videos back at his place.
He thinks I'm the next Shawn Johnson.
What do you think you're doing? Gosh, Jordan, calm down.
I'm sorry you're so jealous that Coach Ray is helping me now.
He told me you might be mad.
What room is Ray Keegan in? - What is this in regards to? - Jordan, let's just leave.
What room is he in? It's against our policy to give out room numbers.
Besides, Coach Keegan is in a meeting, you can leave a message if you'd like.
I'm sorry.
Jordan, stop.
Stop! - What is going on? - Get away from me! Go back to the dorm, Kaylie! No.
I am not gonna leave you like this.
I can't watch you throw away your entire career over some stupid jealousy about Wendy.
That's what you think this is? You think I'm jealous? I'm sorry, I just you've always been a little possessive.
Forget it, leave me alone.
Jordan, what What are you doing? Jordan, what are you doing? Jordan, no! No, that's Coach Ray's car! Stop! Why are you $oing this? Please, Jordan, don't do this! Stop it! Jordan! Don't, Jordan, stop! Stop, please! No, I can't, I can't! I can't! I can't, I can't! Hey.
Hey, it's OK.
Hey, I'm right here.
- I'm right here.
- No.
No, I can't.
I can't let him touch Wendy the way he touched me.
What? What? What are you saying? What do you mean? Ray He molested me.
For years, he molested me.
Oh, God, Jordan.
Jordan He convinced me that it was me who wanted it, that it was me who asked for it.
All those times back at camp that I didn't include you was to protect you.
I couldn't let him hurt you.
I'm so sorry, I didn't know.
I swear I didn't know.
He He said I wouldn't be any good without him.
He said He said that if I told anyone that he would find a way to ban me from gymnastics.
And that's all I had.
That's all I had! Without gymnastics, I would be nothing, I wouldn't even exist.
So I just let it happen.
No.
Hey.
No, you didn't.
OK? You can not blame yourself.
God, you were just a kid and he abused you.
But you are a survivor.
Listen to me, that is what you are.
And we can tell somebody now, we can get help.
It'll be his word against mine.
No one will believe me.
I believe you.
And I will stand by you.
I promise.
No.
Come on, we gotta get out of here.
Let's go, come on.
