MacGyver (2016) s03e08 Episode Script

Revenge + Catacombs + Le Fantome

Previously on MacGyver Hey, let me through! That's my CO! - It's The Ghost, man.
- Who the hell is The Ghost? Some psychotic bomb maker Mac tangled with a while back.
Killed Mac's EOD mentor in Afghanistan, tried to blow up Jack and the U.
N.
Did that just click? If there's anything we can use to track down The Ghost, I'll find it.
I know you will, Charlie.
And hey, thanks, man.
How's that arm doing? Detonation bolt on that last device cut it up pretty good, but I will live.
We're pinned down.
Need air support.
We found another device.
Another IED.
Sounds like every unit in the city is finding IEDs.
We defused 17 in the last four hours, Mac.
It's gonna be hard to keep that pace.
Cutter 29, Cutter 31 wants an update on your location.
This is Cutter 2-9 rolling up to the rally point now.
Over.
Glad to see you guys.
We got orders to advance to the Chamkani Highway, but we can't till we clear this alley.
And one of my guys spotted an object 50 meters up on the right.
Cover us, sir? You got it.
Nothing underneath.
Wooden box built with finger joints, no visible fasteners, and a hinge lid.
Requires skill.
Definitely an IED.
Let's see Whoever built this is using antique clocks as a drive mechanism.
This sucker's powerful, too.
Look at that.
That's enough explosive to vaporize this entire block.
I've never seen craftsmanship like this before, Mac.
Whoever this bomb maker is, he's good.
He's one of the best I've ever seen.
I want to talk tonight about what it felt like to be in the bottom of a dark hole and what it took to come out.
I want to talk about the warrior ethos and the moment I decided that the event that broke me would not get the best of me.
Thank you.
Oh, did you want another beer? Wha Um, yeah.
Or no.
I-I'm I don't know.
Sorry, I am in my head over here.
You know you can talk to me about anything.
Me and Nasha are taking time apart.
Sorry to hear that, Mac.
Yeah, well, me, too.
I just don't want her to be in danger because of me anymore.
After Murdoc, I think it's the best thing for her.
Well, maybe what you should be asking is what's best for you? Maybe, in our line of work, we just don't get to have that.
Yeah.
I'm gonna run these to the table.
Whiskey, straight up.
Eileen.
Uh, MacGyver.
Angus.
It's Angus or MacGyver.
You can call me either one.
All right, Angus or MacGyver.
I'm Eileen or Brennan.
Mm, powerful night.
Very.
Let me guess.
Army.
Nailed it.
First try.
You serve? I'm British intelligence.
I was in Afghanistan for a spell.
British intelligence with an American accent? Your drink, ma'am.
Mm.
I moved to England when I was a little girl.
But it is hard to shake off sounding like a Yank.
When were you in Afghanistan? Same as you.
2011.
I know.
You were Army EOD stationed in Gardez.
How did you know all that? Meeting you here isn't an accident, MacGyver.
I came looking for you.
We have something in common.
The Ghost killed people we love.
Ghost? I know where he is, right now.
We have a chance to go get him, but I need your help.
Okay, Ms.
Brennan, I verified your credentials.
Born in Ohio, you moved to London with your parents as a child, became a naturalized British citizen, joined military intelligence, and you have a jacket full of tours, in Afghanistan, Syria and the Congo.
You are who you say you are.
But what you haven't told us is why your outfit isn't acting on this intel.
My bosses feel the evidence they have is too thin to sanction an op.
So I took a leave of absence and came here to find MacGyver and ask for his help.
I've been studying The Ghost for years.
I believe he's freelanced as a bomb maker in Baghdad, London, Belfast, Spain's Basque region and a dozen other hot spots around the world.
That does line up with what we know about him.
Tracking his bomb history is how I learned about the death of your EOD instructor, Alfred Pena, the massive bomb you disarmed at the U.
N.
and the even bigger one The Ghost planted in your home a year ago.
That's when I realized, if The Ghost came all the way to L.
A.
to try and kill you, he knows you're a threat.
And anyone who scares The Ghost is someone I need right now.
Okay, but every intel agency in the world has been tracking The Ghost for years.
No luck.
We don't know anything about him, yet you have his exact location? I believe the Russian military captured him with a group of Chechen rebels.
The Russians stuck The Ghost in a military installation completely unaware that they had one of the best bomb makers in the history of modern warfare in custody.
Okay, Ms.
Brennan, I would love to green-light a capture op right now, but how could you be so sure the Russians have The Ghost? My contact managed to smuggle a recording of an interrogation out of the Russian military installation.
I am no one.
I know nothing! I am no one! I know nothing! Dude sounds like a pissed-off vampire.
Only this isn't just some vampire.
This is Dracula himself.
How can you be sure that's his voice? Because it's the voice I heard right before one of The Ghost's bombs killed my parents.
Well, Jack's gonna be pissed he was sent to Brazil to clean up that smuggling ring; he would've wanted a piece of this guy.
So you do think she found The Ghost? Well, we have no confirmed recording to compare it to, so I can't be sure.
But I can see she's convinced.
I don't know if that's enough to sanction - an official operation - Mac.
If we have the opportunity to take The Ghost off the board, no matter how shaky the intel, we have to take it.
Go.
You've got the full force of the Phoenix behind you.
Yes, ma'am.
Can you imagine? Me with a daughter? You just know it's gonna turn me into a big softy.
Don't tell anyone I said that.
This, uh, pressure plate detonator is disabled.
Is-is that a camera? Come in.
Good to see you, Mac! Yeah, you, too, Charlie.
Thanks for coming so quick.
Oh, and congrats on the new gig, Mr.
Big Time EOD Instructor.
Thank you.
Though, if I'm honest with you, it's not so easy acting like a hard-ass all day.
I never knew how good Pena was at his job - until I had to do it.
- Yeah, no, he was he was the best.
He was.
So, you really think you found The Ghost? Yeah, it's just a hunch, but I think it's a good one.
And given the fact that it's been radio silence from him since L.
A.
last year I'll take anything I can get.
Mac, you're the best damn bomb tech in the world.
Pena knew it.
I know it.
Why do you need me there? I'm afraid that I'm too close to this, Charlie.
I've been trying to catch him for so long.
It's like Pena always said: your emotions are more dangerous than the bomb at your feet.
And I need I need somebody to remind me of that.
You know I'm with you, Mac.
- Thanks, man.
- Yeah.
Okay, Mac, you're just one klick out from the Russian base.
Copy that, Matty.
Riley, I'm forwarding you the forged Russian military documents for the prisoner transfer.
You guys need to get in, ID The Ghost, grab him and get out of there fast.
Russian checkpoint's just around the next turn.
Charlie, you know what to say? Da, comrade.
Something's wrong.
If this is a checkpoint, where are the guys doing the checking? Somebody definitely used a bolt cutter on these chains.
Hey, Mac, I got four dead Russian soldiers over here.
Someone put a lot of holes in them.
Matty, somebody cleared out this checkpoint.
That crackin' sound It's got to be - high explosives.
- Yeah, I think it was an ANFO bomb.
- You could tell by the sound? - Sound, smell, smoke.
A lot of things help identify a bomb.
ANFO bombs are Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil devices.
They're big and powerful.
Used in rock quarries, - coal mines - Or breaking someone out of a secure military installation.
Riley's right.
A massive explosion just took out the north wall of the Russian base.
Now there's two vehicles heading right for you.
Guys, get to cover.
You should have visual in three, two Cover! Eileen! No.
Get down! Mac! I got a bag full of devices back here.
Every type.
These guys came loaded for bear.
We got a survivor in here.
Put him down right there.
Eileen, you said The Ghost was here working with Chechen rebels.
Think that's who broke him out? It wasn't the Chechens.
That's Patrick Quinn, a member of the IRA.
- IRA? - If the IRA came all the way to Chechnya to get The Ghost out It means they're working with him.
Then The Ghost is in the wind.
I'm willing to bet The Ghost will not be in Chechnya for very long.
Which means we need to get you talking fast.
All right, Patrick, tell us where you were taking The Ghost, or I'll hand you over to the Russians.
Yeah, bet they'll be real excited to meet the man who just bombed one of their army installations.
I'm sorry, what was that? Elvish? - It's Irish.
- Well, if he doesn't speak English, it's gonna be hard to get any useful information out of him.
Oh, he speaks English.
Patrick, I need you to cooperate.
We want to do this the right way.
Guys like this don't understand the "right way.
" Eileen, careful I haven't disarmed those yet.
I know.
How long would it take for you to disarm this if it was triggered? Like, 30 seconds.
But what do you plan Patrick, you're gonna tell me where you were taking The Ghost.
Or I'm gonna turn you into puzzle pieces.
All right, all right, I'll talk, I'll talk! Phoenix agents picked up Quinn where you left him.
And I'm glad you were able to disable that device, Mac.
Not exactly standard interrogation practice - for the Phoenix.
- Nope.
- But it was effective.
- Yeah, but all he was able to tell us was they were taking The Ghost to some warehouse outside the city.
Riley, how far out are you? 20 minutes.
I want everyone to know I'm sorry for back there.
I understand your organization doesn't condone that kind of behavior.
It's just I was eight when my parents died.
My dad was an engineer, and his job relocated us to London.
You know, it was tough for me and my mom to adjust, but we were making the best of it.
Then one day, I came home from school and heard my parents arguing.
So I just sat by the door listening.
And that is when a man started yelling in the hall outside of our apartment.
"Get out.
Run.
" And then something exploded.
I woke up in the hospital.
The British police had dragged me out of the rubble, and I survived.
But my parents didn't.
And the man in the hall yelling, "Get out"? It was The Ghost.
British tests confirmed the bomb was his.
Why would The Ghost be targeting someone in your building? I don't think he was.
I think he was using an apartment as his workshop.
Oh, the British conducted raids all over London that day.
They thought The Ghost had been hired to take out a target in the city.
Maybe The Ghost thought the raids were getting too close.
Maybe the bomb going off was an accident.
I know I crossed the line earlier, and I am sorry.
But I have been obsessed with catching The Ghost for so long, and to just watch him slip away just I know you understand obsession.
Your mentor's death.
It wasn't Pena's death that started my obsession with The Ghost.
Two weeks before Pena was killed, one of The Ghost's bombs went off, killing 12 innocent people.
Six children.
I had only been in-country for three months, it was summer.
We were getting calls from all over the city.
There were bombs everywhere.
Later, they called it "The Day of 1,000 IEDs.
" Got a small cylinder on the floor by the window.
Three more on the ceiling.
Need EOD, ASAP.
We've already defused, what, 41? Yeah.
And it's not like these are your basic slap together, look up on the Internet IEDs.
They're far more advanced bombs that anything we've seen here in Afghanistan.
Hey, guys, we got this one.
Must be a mix-up.
I thought we were working this section of Gardez.
Probably our mistake.
Going on 37 hours straight.
Pulled a real nasty one out of the curb earlier.
Well, you want another set of hands? Cutter 29.
We got two more IEDs.
Sector 11.
Need you ASAP.
Troops taking fire.
- Mac, that's us.
- You're right.
Good luck, boys.
A few hours later a bomb went off on that street killing 12 innocent people.
There must have been a second device there, and that EOD team missed it.
Mac and I set a company record that night.
126 devices defused.
The one that went off that's the one we remember.
This is the warehouse Quinn said they were bringing The Ghost to.
Everybody stay back, Charlie and I will go check for What is it, Mac? The building is on fire.
I can feel heat, but I don't see any fire.
It's a methanol fire.
It burns blue.
It's almost invisible in the daylight.
Invisible and nearly smokeless.
No smoke means no one notices and calls the fire department.
The Ghost must be burning whatever he left behind to cover his tracks.
What is he doing? Fire needs oxygen to burn.
The CO2 will force the oxygen out of the room.
He's making a path through the fire.
- That's insane.
- That's MacGyver.
He's burning barrels of industrial chemicals in there.
They could go up at any second.
Get back, I'm gonna get the bombs.
These are shipping documents.
They're sending thousands of gallons of chemicals somewhere.
The address has burned off these pages.
Paris.
The Ghost is going to Paris.
This is it.
The location where The Ghost shipped the chemicals.
A machine shop? Bomb makers like to hide their workshops in places where the sound of metal work and the smell of chemicals won't seem out of place.
Auto body shops, foundries, chemical plants.
But why Paris? What's the target? That's what we need to find out.
If this is where The Ghost sent the chemicals, where are they? Even if they all were brought here, they'd never fit.
This building isn't big enough to house all those barrels.
So, instead of finding The Ghost, we find an abandoned building and a dead end.
You know, for a place that's supposed to be abandoned, this room sure is clean.
Where's all the dust? We're not leaving any footprints.
This floor's been swept.
Recently.
Yeah, somebody's trying to cover their tracks.
Uh, Mac? What are you doing? Listen.
You hear that? What is that? That is where The Ghost took the chemicals.
This building sits over one of the main service tunnels in the Paris catacombs.
Riley, Bozer, call Paris police, tell them what we found here.
Then call Matty and bring her up to speed.
Eileen, Charlie, you're with me.
Mac, Mac, you don't know how long The Ghost has been down there.
He's had time to nest, make traps.
Need to make sure we're prepared for anything.
Okay, no chemical reaction.
No trip wires, no pressure plates.
- Hall is free of traps.
- I know I watched you build that thing, but I don't know what it does.
It's called a comeback can.
It's a simple science experiment taught to kids to explain the concepts of potential and kinetic energy.
And now you're using it to search for bombs from a safe distance.
That's ingenious, Mac.
And badass.
Brought the police up to speed.
They're calling in additional units to start searching the city for possible incendiary devices.
- How's it going down there? - Slow.
They have to be careful looking for traps.
These catacombs are massive.
Spread out under the entire city.
The Ghost could be anywhere.
Oh, got a reaction.
Chemical particles in the air down this hall.
Everybody, move slow.
Keep your eye open for traps.
Wiring's new.
Door is definitely rigged.
After all these years, Mac.
We finally found one of his workshops.
Yeah, but we still haven't found him.
Everybody, fan out.
There may be evidence of The Ghost's target down here somewhere.
Mac, you're gonna want to see this.
All these discs are labeled with names.
These are all bomb techs.
French, British, American.
I recognize the names.
He's been studying them.
Like an athlete studies game film.
Mac, look at this.
Looks like he's your biggest fan.
Charlie, look at the date on that.
That's the Day of a Thousand IEDs.
Hey, guys.
We got this one.
Must be a mix up.
I thought we were working this section of Gardez.
Ah, probably our mistake.
Going on 37 hours straight.
But we got this one.
Pulled a real nasty one out of the curb earlier.
You guys want another set of hands? The second EOD team.
That wasn't an Army unit, it was The Ghost's men.
And they weren't defusing the bomb, they were setting it.
He was right there, Charlie.
- Right there.
- MacGyver? Charlie.
The man that Jack saw outside the U.
N.
two years ago, he was dressed like a cop.
So this must be The Ghost's MO.
He dresses his men up like the local authorities.
That way, they can do whatever they want.
We have to warn Paris police.
Did I just? Go.
Run! Now! Hello, Mr.
MacGyver.
I believe you've been looking for me.
They call me The Ghost.
Where's Mac? I tried to get to him, but the tunnel collapsed.
Good news is: Charlie and Eileen will both be all right.
The bad news is: Charlie took the brunt of the blast.
Medic says he's sidelined.
Matty, I got more bad news.
I can't find Mac.
His cell phone's no longer transmitting.
Some of the tunnel collapsed when the bomb went off, so we can't get down there to search.
Find another way down into those tunnels, Bozer.
What do you got for me? Okay, Riley, we just compiled a list of potential targets in Paris.
I'm sending them to you now.
Owen Douglas.
He's giving a speech at the French National Assembly building.
The guy who's about to become Prime Minister of England? Sounds like the perfect target for a former IRA terrorist.
And check this out: it wouldn't be the first time that Douglas was targeted for an assassination.
20 years ago, Douglas was a young British defense minister when a bomb the MI5 believes was built by The Ghost and intended to take out Douglas at Parliament detonated in an apartment building just four miles away.
The blast killed a young couple and orphaned a little girl.
- Eileen.
- Eileen.
The Ghost must be settling a score.
Finishing a job he didn't complete 20 years ago.
Get British Protection Command on the phone right now.
Three bombs just went off in the city.
None of them were detonated at the National Assembly building.
I thought that was The Ghost's target.
No.
The Ghost wouldn't try to kill Douglas at the National Assembly building.
Security's too tight.
Then what's he doing? Forcing a response.
In the event of an attack, The Ghost knows that Douglas's protection detail would immediately move him to a safe location in the city.
So these bombs weren't detonated to kill Douglas, but to move him to a specific location.
We need to know where the British safe house is, because I think that's where we're gonna find The Ghost.
I'll make a call.
And what about Mac? MacGyver would want us to go after The Ghost.
We have to trust that Mac can handle himself.
Mr.
MacGyver.
So you don't get any ideas.
I really must thank you.
Thank me for what? For making me better.
I've faced off against hundreds of EOD techs from all over the world.
But none better than you.
You forced me to improve, to push myself.
And this is one of me best yet.
I'm sure that brain of yours is whirring away trying to figure out a way to disarm it.
I'll save you the suspense.
You can't.
Ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, aluminum shavings.
This a fuel air bomb.
Enough to level five city blocks.
What? Why? There's thousands of people up there.
I think you and I both know playing to my empathy won't work.
I don't care about the people.
No.
It's all about the money for you.
Saw your video in Afghanistan.
It was you acting like that EOD tech.
All right.
Good luck, boys.
Looking back on it now, I should've just killed you right there.
But I was trying to set a record, you see.
1,000 IEDs.
Instead, you set a record.
You diffused how many? More than 100? An accomplishment.
I decided that day, when I saw how good you were, that I needed to take you out as soon as possible.
So I made me move two weeks later.
I found out which section of the city you were covering, and I hid a device.
It had a pressure plate trigger, easily spotted, easily disarmed.
Only, disarming that device triggered the secondary one in the ceiling.
Everything was perfect, but then the one thing that I couldn't control happened.
Your bomb robot broke.
What's the holdup, Mac? Damn thing's broke again, Al.
All right, finish fixing it.
I can get this one.
And instead of you entering that hut, it was your mentor.
No.
Pena.
He took the blast meant for you.
How is his daughter Annabelle, by the way? You ever get a chance to visit? Touch me, and boom.
So this is what? Another payday? Oh, no.
This one I'm doing for free.
Okay, Matty, we're here, I got multiple tunnels crisscrossing under the safe house.
Well, if we're right, The Ghost hid his bomb in one of those tunnels.
Then we better be right.
Okay, the tunnel's about to split in two directions, north and south.
We'll cover more ground if we split up.
Agree.
I'll take the north.
Guess that means we got south.
You killed a good man.
Oh, I've killed lots of good men.
And women.
And children.
I've seen the bodies.
Six of them were kids.
Honestly, I don't even remember which bomb you're talking about.
Now it's time for me to go.
This is good-bye, Mr.
MacGyver.
You could at least tell me your name.
Why would you care about that? Well, after I disarm this bomb, I want to know the name of the man I'm never gonna stop hunting.
My name is Connor.
And you won't be hunting me after this.
You're going to die down here.
I know you.
There's no way you'll follow me and leave this device to go off.
It's a shame, really.
You see, I've hidden a bomb out there, somewhere in the world.
A bomb I built just for you.
I was hoping you would find it one day, but c'est la vie.
You know, there was a time we might have gotten along.
- No chance.
- No, it's true.
Years ago, I believed in something.
I had a cause, and like you, I was fighting a war.
But I built a bomb that destroyed me own life and took away the one thing I loved more than anything in this world.
What the hell are you talking about? Eileen, get out.
- The bomb could go off at any - Eileen? second.
So what was this, a setup? A way to get me to step into his trap? I should have never trusted MacGyver he's my father.
- You're Irish.
- Aye.
My father built bombs for the IRA.
Against my mother's wishes.
She didn't want him getting involved.
Didn't want the war to consume her family.
But he did it anyway.
He said it was for "the cause".
The IRA relocated my father from Belfast to London to be closer to his targets.
And he brought his family with him.
One day, my mother picked me up early from school.
I had a cold, so she left work to come get me.
When we got home we found Father in the kitchen.
He was building a device.
I sat downstairs and listened as they argued.
And then my father screamed: "Get out! Run, Eileen!" And then the device he was working on it went off, killing me mum.
Killing the dad I knew and loved.
Leaving this monster.
I mixed the chemicals wrong.
It wasn't stable.
The raids were coming, and I was rushed.
You should have never even been building it, but you were obsessed.
Your obsession killed Mum.
Eileen, I'm so sorry.
I forgive you, Dad.
No.
But I can never forgive The Ghost.
It ends here.
Eileen, the trigger! Eileen, the bomb.
I need your help.
I'm sorry, MacGyver.
- I only came for him.
- No, you can't Eileen! Eileen! Mac.
Mac! What are you guys doing here? Get out.
- I'm not even sure I can stop this thing.
- Mac! We're not leaving you.
That's right.
You stay, we stay.
Eileen killed The Ghost.
As it turns out, that was her father.
I didn't know what she was gonna do until she did it.
When he fell, his dead-man switch armed the bomb.
- Can you disarm it? - No, the thing is too heavy.
I can't lift it.
The components are underneath.
He put them there It's too heavy, - so I can't lift it.
No, I can't do it.
- Hey, hey.
- It's actually impossible.
It's impossible! - Hey.
Hey! You always say emotions are more dangerous than the bomb at your feet.
You can do this.
You need to focus.
Okay? Actually, I have an idea.
Of course you do.
You got it? Almost.
- Yep, I got it.
Okay.
- All right.
All right, now it's just mechanical advantage and simple physics.
You guys pull, I'll sneak under and disarm it.
- You ready? - Yup.
Nice.
All right.
All right, Mac.
- Oh, oh - You got it? I got it.
Mac, we're running out of time.
We have 58 seconds, according to the countdown.
Yeah, according to the tarp, we have less.
Oh great.
Oh, I got it, I got it.
All right.
He's gone, Mac.
It's over.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All this time, The Ghost has been out there, and now he's gone.
Couldn't imagine a better group of friends to share this moment with, so - Cheers.
- Cheers.
I keep wondering was Eileen just looking to avenge the death of her mother? Can't imagine what it's like knowing your dad killed your mom.
Then became the most famous serial bomber in history.
It's possible she just couldn't live with the fact her father was a murderer.
Be right back.
Eileen disappeared, Mac.
British authorities staked out her house, but she never showed.
It's possible she never returned to England.
Pena died in my place, Matty.
I-I didn't tell anyone else.
But The Ghost said that the bomb that went off in Afghanistan, that was meant for me.
Mac, nothing that happened in Gardez that day was your fault.
And from everything that you've told me about Pena, he would have given his life to save yours.
And I know that he'd be so proud of the man you are today.
The Ghost told me he left another bomb out there somewhere.
One he built just for me.
One I'm supposed to find someday, and I'm pretty sure it's meant to kill me or someone I care about.
Mac, he said that to get inside your head.
But you can't be obsessed with him anymore.
You see where obsession led Eileen.
The Ghost is gone.
Don't let him haunt you.
Hey, Mac, come here.
Jack's calling from a bar in Brazil, and he's got stories.
Go on.
If anyone can cheer you up, it's Jack.
Where are you? That's 3,000 miles away
