Motive (2013) s03e08 Episode Script
Reversal of Fortune
They released their numbers after the bell.
And you're confident in their management team? I think the stock is undervalued.
Stock price isn't the only consideration.
Ginelle Half my portfolio is exposed.
I need to know my position before the market opens.
All right, then.
Let's take a look.
Turn over three cards.
You're in a unique position to leverage the forces around you.
The upright "chariot" card, that's about maintaining your focus and your confidence.
Your money is safe where it is, Martin.
So, this layout allows us to add four more brew tanks a little bit further down the road.
- Joe - which hold on.
Which means we're gonna need a larger building, but I'll tell you, it's never too early to start planning for expansion - Joe.
- Right? I'm out.
- What do you mean? - Look, it's nothing personal.
No, it is personal.
We've been planning this for two years.
I told you from the beginning that I did not feel comfortable making your sister a partner.
I'm sorry, Joe.
You're sorry? And that's supposed to make this all better, because you're "sorry"? Guys, this isn't asbestos! [Police radios crackling in the background.]
Whoa.
It never ceases to amaze me where people find bodies.
.
Yeah, they were preparing the warehouse for asbestos removal.
Otherwise, we never would've found her.
She was placed there post-mortem.
How do you know that? - No scratches on the boards.
- Ugh.
Yeah You board me up behind a wall? I'm gonna claw my way out.
Looks like she's been in there for years.
You know, it only takes for mummification.
Especially behind these furnaces.
S03E08 Reversal of Fortune Ginelle Mercier.
No, no.
"Mercier.
" With an "m.
" Yeah.
Yeah, when was she reported missing? Okay.
Thank you.
Okay, so, a Ginelle Mercier disappeared about a year ago.
Oh, well, I'll be able to confirm her identity with dental records.
Hey, thought if it was okay with you, that maybe I would observe the autopsy? Not at all.
It's fine.
Thanks.
So I got Lucas talking to the realtor right now.
You want to head down to missing persons, - pick up the Mercier file? - Yeah, I'll pick up.
Okay.
Got an appointment this afternoon.
- Can you cover for me? - For you? Anything.
Thank you.
Betty? And make sure to get a gravity reading on the e.
S.
B.
In tank three.
[Joe.]
: And don't forget to release the head pressure on that ale, okay? Thanks.
So how we doing? Can't believe that we open Friday.
Listen, sis.
Thank you for your help.
- You've been amazing.
- Of course.
No, I'm I'm serious.
You it's been a tough year, and you've just been so strong, and I'm proud of you.
It's going to be different this time.
I know.
How are you doing? Can I give you some more hot water? Um, no, just the bill, please.
Beautiful cards.
Looks like he's having a hard time.
Like he's trying to hold it together through the ups and downs.
Have you studied the tarot? No, but I've always been kind of curious.
And what about this one? What do you see? Um an old man on a mountain.
But he's alone.
Like he might be Like he might be soul-searching.
You have a gift.
[Laughs.]
Who has access to the building? Me and the owner.
He lives overseas.
So you're the only one who's been out here for the past two years? Uh, I put a lock box on the door.
At least a dozen realtors have access to the code.
Not to mention all the contractors.
How many contractors? Five or six? We were compiling bids for a renovation.
That's when we found the asbestos.
And when was that? February, last year.
'Kay, I'm gonna need the names of all the realtors and anyone that you've shown the property to, as well as all the contractors.
First, asbestos, now a corpse.
I won't be able to give this building away.
I should tell my client to torch it for the insurance money.
No.
You shouldn't.
Ah! Here we go.
Ginelle Mercier.
Reported missing February 16th.
I remember her.
It says you didn't file a report till February 19th.
Why'd you wait? Her mom filed a report.
Said Ginelle phoned every Sunday, and she'd missed the last two Sundays in a row.
So you waited because? Because she's a flake.
Can you be more specific? She was a tarot card reader.
You get anything from her apartment? No sign of foul play.
Phone records? Just a land-line.
She didn't have a cell.
Feared the radiation would interfere with her psychic abilities.
She wouldn't even take an aspirin.
Credit cards? Philosophically opposed.
See what I mean? Flake.
We interviewed the people from her phone records, her neighbor, clients, family.
Nothing? Ahh, she's all yours.
[Betty.]
: Dental records confirmed it.
This is Ginelle Mercier.
And it was definitely no accident.
Defensive wounds from a knife.
[Inhales sharply.]
Uh, you can go to lunch any time.
Oh, I'm good.
Oh, so she tried to fight off her attacker? Uh, yes, and there are petecchial hemorrhages on her heart, and a broken hyoid in her neck.
Okay, so strangulation.
She was attacked from the front and the back.
Either one hell of a fight, or we're looking for two people.
Mm, I also found a fungal infection in her respiratory tract.
Never a dull day around here.
Well, it's a little crowded sometimes.
[Keyboard clacking.]
According to the missing persons' report, Ginelle had several voice messages from a "Martin Porterman," a client.
First one came in on February 2nd, when she missed an appointment.
And the contractors found the asbestos - on the 10th.
- Right.
[Thumps pen.]
Well, let's assume that the body was hidden sometime before the 10th, 'cause you're not gonna hide a body in a building you know is going to be torn up, right? - No.
- "Asbestos.
" So she was boarded up some time in the eight days before the building was sealed.
And Duncan everson checks out, but he can't provide a list of who the property's been shown to, because it's been on the market for a couple years.
What about the purse? Anything of interest in there? Various personal items, and a tarot deck, that was missing the "10 of cups" card.
I looked it up, and, ironically It represents happiness.
Mm.
Well, yeah, the cards have more than one meaning.
- That's true.
- Of course you'd know that.
Wait! You've never had a reading? - You buy into this? - Yeah! Well, people find meaning from different sources.
[Angie.]
: Plus, it's fun.
"Martin Porterman," that's a new name.
Yeah, he was a client.
All right.
You guys mind checking him out? - Yeah, sure.
We're on it.
- Thank you.
[Door opens and shuts.]
[Ginelle.]
: So, did you have a specific question in mind? Yeah.
Is my mom okay? "10 of cups.
" Mm.
Your mother is in a safe place.
Um, I'm sensing someone else, though.
A fatherly figure.
I'm-I'm getting the letter "J.
" [Chuckles.]
: Joe.
He's my older brother.
He was 15 when I was born.
I never even met my dad.
This this card this is the ace of cups, it's about fulfillment.
It's upside-down.
It's gonna be difficult for Joe, isn't it? Yes.
But We can do some energy work.
Okay.
I had a standing appointment with Ginelle twice a week.
In five years, she never missed it once.
Mm-hmm.
And what'd that set you back? No wonder she never missed it.
Worth every penny.
I owe a lot of my success to Ginelle.
Hmm.
Did you know any of her other clients? Ginelle was very discreet.
Part of the service.
So how'd you hear about her? A friend recommended her.
I was skeptical initially, but Couldn't argue with the results.
Yeah.
How's business been without her advice? I've taken a hit.
I tried working with Sylvia Lake for a while.
Another psychic? Not nearly as intuitive.
So how did you find Sylvia Lake? She called me.
And you didn't find that to be a little odd? No.
Well, that's how you want a good psychic to work, right? Precisely.
Uh, the symptoms you've described aren't the side effects I'd normally associate with this medication.
Is it a drug allergy? I mean, do you want me you want me to try something else? It could be an allergy, or it could be an adverse reaction to the medication.
Could it be a misdiagnosis? We can only rely on the tests for so many things.
There's always gonna be a certain amount of patients who fall outside of that normal range.
I'm going to send you for a radio-iodine scan.
Fine.
Uh, how about the meds? You want me to keep taking them? Let's hold off for now.
I'd encourage you to get some rest and try not to worry, okay? Okay.
[They clasp hands.]
Thank you, sir.
- See you, Oscar.
- Have a good day.
You too.
[Sighs heavily.]
[Knocks on door.]
- Hey.
- Hi.
So, I, uh I need to ask a favor.
Name it.
I need to step down as primary on this case.
The doctor needs to run more tests, so.
- Oscar, I - That's why I think, uh, it's in the best interest of the investigation, if someone else spearheads it, sir.
Okay.
I'll get Angie to take point.
Thank you, sir.
Betty has an update.
[Angie.]
: Okay.
Yeah, I got it.
Uh-huh.
That was weird.
Cross just called and asked me to take over the investigation at Vega's request.
- Did he say why? - No.
Maybe Sylvia Lake will have the answers.
[Bell dings.]
[Camera shutter snaps.]
We're investigating the disappearance of Ginelle Mercier.
We understand she was a friend of yours.
I wouldn't say Ginelle was a friend, but she was definitely an esteemed colleague.
You also worked with one of her former clients, Martin Porterman.
I've been doing this awhile.
Sooner or later, everyone comes to me.
Mm.
Careful, I just cleansed that one of negative energies.
Oh.
Oh.
Uh, can you tell us where you got Martin's contact info? Satisfied customers offer referrals.
Others are walk-ins.
He says you called him.
It was a long time ago.
I can't remember.
Can you point us in the direction of any of Ginelle's other clients? I have to respect their privacy.
I'm no psychic, but when we do come back with a warrant, you may find yourself being a person of interest.
[Scoffs lightly.]
Okay.
Look.
The last time I saw Ginelle was about a year ago.
She came into the store to buy a new tarot deck.
She left her client book behind.
I'm guessing you didn't tell her.
Well? What do you think? - This place is huge! - You like it? It's amazing! [Laughs.]
Good! I'm glad you approve.
Hello? Joe, this is Ginelle.
Hey! Joe.
Hi.
Very nice to meet you.
Hi.
Wow! [Hushed.]
: I told you about Ginelle.
We met at the restaurant.
Really? I think I would've remembered that.
Anyway, Duncan needs the deposit, so if you'll sign off on this place That's why I brought Ginelle.
She's a psychic.
She specializes in corporate readings.
Really? Are we gonna do this right now? Shh.
Quiet, please.
[Claps folder shut.]
There's a dark energy here.
Come here.
Close your eyes.
The light plays tricks.
[Elizabeth.]
: I feel it.
It's cold.
It's actually kind of perfect.
So, if you sign these documents, I'll get the bank to issue me a deposit check.
Didn't you hear what Ginelle said? We need to keep looking.
[Grumbling sigh.]
Liz, I'm headed to the brewery.
Hey! You're not my sister.
I'm Pam.
Liz's friend.
I'm Joe.
Liz's brother.
- The brewmaster.
- Yes.
So how do you know my sister? From yoga.
She told me about your new business.
- Ah.
- Sounds exciting.
"Exhausting" is more like it.
At least you can have a beer after a long day.
This is true.
[Both chuckling.]
Oh, you met Pam.
Yes.
I sure did.
Pam and I are going on a yoga retreat tomorrow, to Harrison.
Whoa! Tomorrow? I'll be back before the opening.
I have to go to work.
It was nice to meet you.
You too.
- I'll pick you up at 7:00? - That sounds great.
So who's Pam? I told you.
We met at yoga.
And you're just going off on a retreat together? - It's not a big deal.
- No, it is a big deal.
We open in three days and I need you at work.
- Okay? - Okay.
All right.
[Betty.]
: The lab identified the plaque found in Ginelle's respiratory tract as yeast.
She must have breathed in the spores.
And what are we talking about? Baker's yeast? Precisely.
Okay, so she was around yeast when she died? Yes.
Thank you, doctor.
Hey.
Yeah? - How'd it go at the doctor's? - Oh, it's fine.
Did he adjust your prescription? He did.
So, uh Something personal came up.
Okay.
I'm still going through the client list.
So far, that's all we got.
No insight from the family? Mm-mm.
They thought she was a flake.
I don't know if I'd call it flaky to pursue a calling.
In a lot of ways, it's like profiling.
Chocolate mints.
She had a sweet tooth.
Glasses.
Vintage.
Mm-hmm.
Maybe she yearned for another time.
She's a quiet romantic.
According to her driver's license, she has 20/20 vision.
Oh.
So I called the optometrist's number on the case.
Glasses belong to a "Frances Samuelson.
" Unfortunately, franny passed away six months ago, so unless you got a ouija board, I think we have to go talk to her son.
Let's bring him in, see what he says.
Or we could go out.
Let's have him picked up.
Yeah.
I don't like the rain either.
Want to order in? - Sure.
- 'Kay.
Hey.
That's Internal Investigations.
What do they want? [Knocking.]
Come on in.
That has to be about Neville Montgomery.
[Sighing.]
All right.
I'll look into it.
Well, it makes sense, you know? Internal Investigations answers to the deputy chief, deputy chief and Neville are cronies.
.
All right.
Let's not jump to conclusions.
Yeah, but I'm so good at it.
Damn it.
[knocks on window.]
Detective Flynn.
I'm Sergeant Saunders, but you can call me Gavin.
What's this about, sergeant? Look, I get it.
I do.
People get that envelope from us and it's "shields up," but I assure you, there is nothing to stress over.
I know you're busy, and the last place you want to be is in here.
Well, I see you requested a posting to recruiting, and then transferred back to homicide after six months? Mm-hmm.
What's your point? No point, I was just making conversation.
Oh.
Oh.
[Laughs.]
[Chuckles.]
Well, let's jump right in, shall we? Uh, I just have a couple of questions regarding your arrest of Janet Wong.
You arrested her for robbery? Second-degree murder, actually.
She admitted to the robbery during the interview.
Got it.
Well, you have a very impressive solve rate, detective.
[Turns page.]
So, one prisoner kills another, but you don't believe his confession? What led you to Janet Wong? Specifically.
Due diligence.
Janet Wong was on duty that night.
She placed Derek Caster in the cell with Mason Garvey.
Suddenly, she had a new car.
Right, and then Wong told you Henry Guenther paid her $50,000 to arrange the murder? She did, yes.
And that's why you brought Guenther in for questioning? Exactly.
Well Thank you so much for your time, detective.
We're done? I'm sorry, one more thing.
What made you so sure Janet Wong was involved in the first place? I told you.
Due diligence.
Right.
Right.
Got it.
[Maria.]
: Angie Flynn? That detective? I saw her at London's funeral.
Then we bumped into each other at a hamburger stand.
Detective Flynn believes Neville and I conspired to murder London's killer.
Have you seen her since? Henry, if I'm being cross-examined, I'd like to know what I'm being accused of.
Just answer the question.
Have you seen her since? Yes.
And what did you discuss? She mentioned a friend of Neville's named Janet Wong, asked if I knew her.
And? I've never heard that name before.
Thank you, Maria.
Having a grand opening! We'd love to see you there.
- Thank you.
- Come join us.
Thank you.
Hey! Hi.
Is Elizabeth still here? She just left.
Ahh.
I wanted to give her a ride home.
And hand out some invites? Guilty as charged.
I hope to see you there.
After you rained on our yoga retreat? How about I make it up to you? Come on by, I'll give you a tour, I can show you around the place.
Oh, you don't have to do that.
No, it would be my pleasure.
I'll open up some taps, give you a little taste of the pilsner, which is our flagship.
That's a very tempting offer.
Here.
Let me give you my cell.
Just call me whenever you want to come by.
I will.
Here, I'll help you with that.
Thank you.
Sorry if I smell like beer.
I just got back from work.
Where's Liz? Actually, she had a previous engagement.
Oh.
Um, maybe we should do this another time, then.
No.
No, no, no, no.
Look, I'm I'm sorry about the warehouse.
Yeah, I mean, oh, God, I was overworked, I was tired, and I shouldn't have been rude, I apologize.
It's okay.
Look, Elizabeth bought this reading for me, and I want to keep an open mind toward it, and-and she speaks so highly of you, so There you go.
Joe, I work a lot in the corporate sector, and sometimes what I have to say can be hard to hear.
Okay, well, I mean, don't sugar-coat it.
[Flicks a card.]
Your business venture will be a failure.
These glasses aren't the only thing Ginelle stole from my mother.
She took her for thousands.
You know that for a fact, do you? Yeah.
She paid that woman $500 every month to hear how happy my father was in heaven.
Did it bring her peace? I don't know.
I guess.
Well, then money well-spent, don't you think? Did you ever voice your concerns to Ginelle? She screened my calls.
That must've been very frustrating.
Yeah, so maybe you tracked her down and you took matters into your own hands? No! I mean, I had it out with her at the restaurant, but that's the last time - I saw her.
- When was this? Last yeah, around new year's.
Where was this? Trattoria.
I didn't want mom picking up the tab again, so I went down there.
Turns out Ginelle has a sidekick.
The two of them were feeding her a load of crap.
[Thumps table.]
Know what? I think you're full of crap.
[Door bangs.]
Like How did Ginelle react when you showed up at the restaurant? She flipped out.
So did my mom.
They had the manager kick me out.
Was she with this woman? Sylvia Lake? No.
She was younger.
Kinda hot.
Got a name? [Sighing.]
Liz.
Didn't realize you were gonna go in that hard.
Well, all that guy cares about is his mother's money.
Why don't you take the rest of the day? I can write up the interview for Angie.
Okay.
That's a good idea.
Thank you.
Where's Oscar? He's taking some personal time.
We got a lead.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
Gary said that Ginelle had an assistant, "Liz," and I found an Elizabeth "h" in Ginelle's client book.
Is that her phone number? That's what I thought at first.
It's numerology.
Oh, yeah! Look at that! There's her birthday, and there's her number value.
Someone's really opening their mind.
Ahh, somebody looked it up on the Wikipedia page.
Let's see if she's in the database.
[Phone buzzing.]
When was the last time you spoke with Ginelle? About a year ago, before she left town.
- She told you she was leaving? - No, she sent me a card.
A few weeks after she left.
- You still have it? - Of course.
Thank you.
What's going on? Well, we just have some questions about Ginelle and her work.
How did you two meet? Uh At the tea shop that I used to work at.
Ginelle was a customer.
We struck up a conversation over her tarot cards.
Ginelle said that I had a gift.
Mm.
She kind of mentored me.
What did she charge you for that? Nothing.
We need to take this with us.
Is Ginelle okay? [Sighs.]
Liz, I have some bad news.
Ginelle is dead.
No.
No.
You have to go.
I know it's a lot to absorb.
You have to go.
Just leave.
Well, we'd like to call victim services for you, okay? No.
I'll just call my brother.
It's not necessary.
We'll wait with you until he gets here.
Fine.
Whatever.
Excuse me.
[Quietly.]
: Some reaction.
Yeah.
Guilt or grief? Don't let her out of your sight.
Elizabeth? Joe! Hey.
Oh, I got here as soon as I could.
Are you okay? She's dead.
I'm so sorry.
Thank you.
Thank you for staying with her.
I can take it from here.
Well, we have some more questions for Elizabeth when she's feeling up to it.
Yeah.
Yeah, sure.
Okay.
So we'll be in touch.
What'd you tell them? They wanted to know if we had worked together, how we met.
I gave them the card that she sent.
Why would you give them that? Well, I was trying to help! She was my best friend! You knew her for three months! We had a connection! [Sighing.]
Okay, so forensics compared the writing on the card to the writing in Ginelle's client book.
No match.
Not only that [laughs.]
The writing on the envelope doesn't even match the writing on the card.
So the sender didn't bother trying to forge it on the envelope? - Mm-hmm.
- Sloppy.
Detective Flynn? If I could have a word? It'll just take a sec.
Um, Lucas so that means that our killer specifically wanted Elizabeth Hillis to believe that our victim was still alive.
I'm just I'm a little bit busy right now, Sergeant Saunders.
No offense, but so am I.
Okay, well, as soon as I can track down my union rep, then I will give you a call.
I appreciate that.
It's not hard to mail something from a foreign place.
Elizabeth could've sent it herself to alibi herself.
What does internal want? I have no idea.
Apparently, to waste my time.
They're investigating the Janet Wong arrest.
Why would they need to do that? I don't know.
Just bring in Elizabeth.
See what she has to say about the card.
I gotta find my union rep.
Can't stop thinking about that pilsner you promised me.
Hey! Hi.
Hey.
Um, sorry, we're just a little bit crazy around here.
We're opening tomorrow.
Where's Elizabeth? She, uh, had a previous engagement.
Mm.
Well, then I get you all to myself.
[Chuckling.]
Detective.
Mm-hmm.
I'm hoping you can shed light on something for me.
Yeah, if I can.
Janet Wong told you about a cash payment of $50,000 from Henry Guenther.
She did.
That's why I brought Guenther in for questioning.
So why did Detective Vega run her license plate? Aw yeah.
Uh, Detective Vega and I were working on a robbery/homicide, and I got my notes about Janet Wong mixed up with some eye-witness reports about the getaway car.
So it was an accident? It was.
It was late, we were tired.
[Chuckles.]
Detective Flynn, you know, if you lie to me, you're violating the police act.
I'm well aware of my responsibilities as a police officer, sergeant.
Are we done? For now.
So that is our mash tun.
We mix the malt and the heated water in there.
And is that where you boil all the hops? Yes.
You know a lot about beer.
Well, I may have done some research to impress you.
[Joe chuckles.]
So, um How has my sister been acting? You worry about her a lot.
That's sweet.
Yeah.
We've been through a lot of stuff together.
I mean, there's nothing I wouldn't do for her.
Liz can take care of herself.
I'd rather talk about you.
[Phone rings.]
I'm so sorry.
I got to take this.
[Sighing.]
Elizabeth? No.
Just slow down.
Slow down.
Where are you? Joe said that I shouldn't say anything.
Okay.
Well, here's the thing.
The card you showed us isn't from Ginelle.
It's a forgery.
What? Who would do that? I'm hoping you can help me figure that out.
That's cruel.
I thought it was from her.
You said that you and Ginelle were good friends, and that she was your mentor, right? Yes.
So why wouldn't she tell you she was leaving town? I figured she had her reasons.
I think you know more than you're letting on, Elizabeth.
[Chokes up.]
: I don't.
She was my friend.
Did you have a fight with Ginelle? Did she ask you for too much money? [Sobs.]
I knew she was gonna die.
I dreamt that she was dead.
[Sniffles.]
And now she is.
And in your dream, how did she die? - Detective - Just a second.
This interview is over.
Miss Hillis, your brother's here.
Hey, why did you shut the interview down? She was talking! Because, legally, she can't agree to the interview.
Her brother has guardianship over her.
What'd she do to lose control of her life? Good morning.
Do me a favor and keep it together, okay? Why did you invite Pam for a tour? We already went through this.
What difference does it make? I told you before to stay away from my friends.
I was being nice.
That's what you said about Ginelle, too.
I don't have time for this right now.
Okay? Just try to keep it together.
Elizabeth Hillis hospitalized six years ago, after the death of her mother.
Tried to commit suicide while in care.
Readmitted 12 months ago.
The around the same time Ginelle died.
- Mm-hmm.
- They say why? "Schizoaffective disorder.
" And her brother assumed guardianship three months later, which, by the way, allows him to make all the decisions.
- Including financial? - Mm-hmm.
Oh.
Well, that comes in very handy when you're opening a brewery, doesn't it? Mm-hmm.
[Thumps the glass.]
Well, this is a nice place.
Aw, hey.
This makes me want to call it a day and knock back a cold one, you know that? Well, we are not officially open yet, and that would put me in breach of license.
Well, I don't want that.
Well, the grand opening's tonight, if you want to come back.
Oh, maybe.
What is the secret of that one? Uh that is a secret.
So I can't tell you.
But I can say this it's got the complexity of an ale and the rich, creamy thick head of a pilsner.
Ah, well, I would come back for that.
- Can I take a picture of this? - Yeah, help yourself.
So I was just wondering about, um Ginelle and Liz's relationship.
[Snap.]
Were they close? Did they spend a lot of time together? You'd have to ask Elizabeth.
Yeah.
I didn't get a chance because you stopped the interview, which gave me the impression you didn't want her talking to us.
My sister has an illness.
Mm-hmm.
People tend to take advantage of that.
Right.
Yeah.
Must've been hard, then, watching how much influence Ginelle had in her life.
I'm sorry.
Did I make you anxious? No? Maybe I'm just imagining it.
Uh, listen, you let us know if you or Liz decide to leave town.
Okay? We just want to know.
And I'm gonna come back for that one, on the bottom.
Hey! Where you been? Oh, yeah.
So what do we got? Well I just went and talked to that real estate agent Duncan Everson again.
Now he does remember showing the warehouse to Joe Hillis, when he was looking for a location for his brewery.
All right, so Duncan's sure that he remembers showing him? He is sure.
He remembers the deal falling through in the 11th hour.
All right, that connects Joe to the warehouse.
Mm-hmm, and now handwriting analysis connects Joe to the card that was sent to Elizabeth.
Right.
So Joe tries to hide Ginelle's murder from his sister.
Or he tries to alibi his sister.
Yeah, so, out of all the cards to send, he sends this one.
This one, upright, it means family, well-being.
It means happiness.
Mm-hmm.
But reversed It means a blocked emotional connection.
Mm.
Blocked emotional connection.
[Chuckles.]
Okay.
Realizing your dreams doesn't happen overnight.
In fact, uh, it can be a very difficult path.
You plant a seed and, with a little bit of luck, something special happens.
Something rare.
Something amazing! Which we bear witness to here tonight.
[Crowd cheering.]
Uh, my sister, over there the amazing Elizabeth I owe you a very special thank you, and I couldn't have done any of this without her.
So let's give it up! Come on! Elizabeth! I love you! And on that note bottoms up And enjoy your beers! [Crowd cheering.]
Excuse me, Elizabeth? I'm Detective Vega.
I need you to come with me, please.
Thank you for coming.
Thank you.
Joe, can you come with me, please? I'll be right back.
Right now, please.
Enjoy your beer, everybody! I'll be right back.
[Buzzing chatter.]
Where's Elizabeth? She's in the next room.
Look, just Let her go.
Please.
I mean, she doesn't know anything.
Well, we know that you forged the farewell card from Ginelle to your sister.
And that you knew about the warehouse - where Ginelle's body was found.
- [Oscar.]
: We also know that Elizabeth stopped taking her medication two months before Ginelle was killed.
She was institutionalized immediately afterward.
Look, medical records are confidential! Insurance records are not.
You can't protect your sister anymore, Joe.
You don't believe in my business? Fine.
But let's get something straight.
My sister needs to take her medication.
You know, there's alternatives to taking antipsychotics.
Did she tell you what happened the last time she went off her meds? Your sister has a gift! These drugs are clouding her mind, her potential.
- My sister has an illness! - That you exaggerate.
- You're not a doctor! - Neither are you! No, but I know what my sister needs, okay? So stop interfering with stuff you know nothing about! She needed her medication.
She understood that, but She just she didn't like the way it made her feel.
And Ginelle believed in clean-living.
No pharmaceuticals.
Not even aspirin.
[Angie.]
: Ginelle convinced your sister to go off her medication, didn't she? She told Elizabeth that the medication was numbing her "gift.
" That must've sent her into a downward spiral.
Hey.
Hey, hey, hey, hey.
There's a demon in there, Joe! Just give me the knife.
- I think I killed it.
- Give me the Whoa.
What have you done? Just give me the knife.
Give me give it to me.
Give me the knife.
- No.
- Give it, okay? Come here, come here.
I got you, okay? I'm gonna protect you, like I always do.
Okay? Okay.
Like I always do.
The last time Elizabeth had an episode this extreme, I had to hospitalize her.
She was so depressed, she almost killed herself.
You weren't gonna take that risk again.
She's the only thing I have.
And that's why you hid Ginelle's body.
And you sent Elizabeth that card so she would think that her friend was alive.
So she wouldn't know she'd killed her friend.
[Sighs.]
Ginelle? Look.
It's safe to come out now.
Where is she? [Sobs.]
She she's in her room.
Um, I gave her something to help her sleep.
[Lock clicks.]
Did you call the police? Look, it's okay, I took the knife away from her.
[Sniffs.]
[Forcefully.]
: Did you call the police? Look, let me let me see your wounds, okay? Let me let me see your hands.
That's not that bad.
I mean, we can we can go to the hospital - No.
- and they'll stitch you up.
[Shrieks.]
: No! No! - Okay - she should be arrested! - Just keep it down! - No! - Keep it down! - You should call the police! - I can't! - I will have her arrested I can't do that For attempted murder! I can't do that! Okay I can't let you do that.
Look at what she did to me! You did that yourself! Okay? I warned you that that would happen! But you wouldn't listen to me! You're as crazy as she is.
- No! - Stop! - Ahh! Ahh! - I said, stop! No! No! - Ahh! Ahh! - Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! [Muffled protesting.]
Shut up! [Ginelle falls silent mid-scream.]
[Joe gasps wearily.]
[Sighs.]
Elizabeth didn't kill Ginelle.
I did.
You have no reason to charge her with anything.
Just let her go, please? We're gonna do what we can for her, Joe.
[Oscar thumps glass.]
She has a a friend named Pam Hexton.
Can you can you call her, please? I don't want her to be alone right now.
Of course.
Thank you.
Hey.
Uh, this isn't easy for me.
A month ago, I got diagnosed with Grave's disease, and I've been taking medication.
It's not working.
And, uh they think it's a misdiagnosis.
What do they think it is? They don't They don't know.
Why didn't you tell me sooner? Like, last month or last week? I wanted it, uh I wanted it to be private.
So we're keeping secrets from each other? [Awkward chuckle.]
Oh, um Remember when you asked me why I come along with you in situations that blow up in your face? I remember you not answering that question.
I just I needed time.
But what I felt I heard you say was that You didn't want to be responsible for me, right? - And that's - No.
- That's fair, I guess.
- This is different.
It's not different, no.
You left, and I respected that, I gave you your space, and what I'm asking for here is the is the same consideration.
