Night Shift
[OPENING THEME PLAYING.]
[DISTANT WOLVES HOWLING.]
[STATIC CRACKLING.]
NATE: This is Dave, our props guy.
Say hi, Dave.
All right.
And this is our awesome cameraman, Chris.
- What's going on, Chris? - milk the climax.
NATE: Here are the stars of our show.
I get it, but it's not just your decision.
And that was the part that I wrote.
So it would be nice if you could just How's this looking? Looking good, Camille.
[INDISTINCT BACKGROUND CHATTER.]
You know, we could have talked about this just between us.
Everybody didn't need to hear that.
Hey, is this working? - NATE: Yeah.
- Yes? Ooh.
Let's take that and shoot some of those segments outdoors.
Great zombie intro.
- Yes, yes, yes.
- Yes.
Yes.
Nice.
Hang on to that, Jerry.
ROBERT: odd.
NINA: So how old are you here? I mean, this is, uh, 1974, so 25.
How did you get this footage? Where did you find Oh, a ton of this stuff is up on YouTube now.
So these were the early days of "Night Shift," right? Yes.
Yes, Robert and I were just out of community college, and the station had these new portable cameras, and we set our minds Sorry.
Uh, wait.
Sorry.
Sorry, sorry.
OK.
You can keep going.
Um, aren't you writing an article in addition to the radio interview? Yeah.
I'll do a short written piece to go along with the podcast.
Oh! Um Would you mind? I'm such a huge fan of yours.
My dad grew up on you.
We watched as many of your episodes as we could find.
You guys were the greatest.
And I wasn't even expecting you to be in character.
Why are you finally talking to me now? You can only keep things buried so long before they rise up.
You know, I honestly thought that you'd look, like, way older.
So, uh, "Night Shift" was born in 1972, and it ran for a few years, and Excuse me one moment.
Sorry.
Please.
Yeah, sure.
- [DOOR OPENS.]
- Oh.
[CHUCKLES SOFTLY.]
Thanks.
[CABINET OPENS.]
[SIGHS.]
This is for you.
The wine is strong.
You'll have to forgive my tastes.
Do you mind if we start from the beginning? Yes, yes.
Uh How did this all happen? Well, it was Robert and I since we were kids, and, um we grew up in the middle of nowhere with nothing but our imaginations, keep us from insane, and we put on little plays in my bedroom and record radio shows in middle school - Wow.
- And in high school, we performed plays for our friends in garages, in the graveyards, in the forests after dark, and Then, when we went to community college, we started working at the TV station, and we were the only ones with enough spare time to, uh, learn the new equipment, and there was so much dead air after midnight that they eventually offered us what they referred to as - the night shift.
- [CHUCKLE.]
And that's really when Robert and I truly became each other's everything.
I mean, we cracked each other up, we terrified each other, we put on little comedy skits about horror movies and vice versa.
They blended together perfectly.
Horror, monsters, demon jokes, terror, slapstick, all of it.
By the time school ended, we'd kind of gotten a bit of a following, so we were still hanging around the TV station, and the late night crew we had was hilarious.
And so we dreamt up our own night shift and started showing movies with our own short films after midnight.
It was it was that was our dream, and we just it just, uh Yeah.
We, um Why did it stop? You know, we were we were kids, and boys will be boys.
What does that mean, boys will be boys? I don't have to tell you anything.
[KNOCK ON DOOR.]
[WIND HOWLING.]
Robert.
Hello, Darkness.
My old friend.
[SOFT CHUCKLE.]
Oh, hello.
It's lovely to see you again.
NINA: It's good to see you, too.
Nina reached out to me last year.
She wants to tell our story to everyone who loved the show, and she asked me to come here and to see you again.
We didn't tell you because, well, I knew you'd never agree to see me otherwise.
Stop! I have crossed oceans to reunite with you, my old friend.
I have always known that destiny would bring us back together, and tonight seems to be the night.
As you yourself once said "Should she come knocking at my door" " who am I to deny a date with Destiny?" OK.
So, as far as I understand, the show officially started in 1972, but by 1975, it just stopped.
So what happened? Seems you already know our story.
His side at least.
OK, I know some of it, not all of it.
But I haven't heard anything from you.
With your permission? You certainly don't need my permission.
[SCOFFS.]
Jesus.
There was a time when I couldn't even address the crew without consulting Robert or he'd lose it! NINA: Wow.
That must've been difficult.
I'd say it was beyond difficult.
Um, I see, but you did describe this as a perfect match.
Yeah, we were.
We were for a time.
Until 1975.
Until Until Camille.
I'm allowed to say her name.
I loved her, too.
Love? Love?! I think you and I have very different notions of what love is.
Love does not end because 14,558 days have passed.
Not when you drive an ocean between people.
It only makes it stronger.
Fortified by time, distance.
Even death cannot destroy love.
[SIGHS.]
40 years, and now you want to share a drink with me? Why don't you pour me one? I don't think you can handle the wine I drink, old friend.
- Really? - Yes, really.
[EACH SCOFFS.]
Not bad, not bad, not bad at all.
[TED CHUCKLES.]
- Ugh.
Pardon me.
- [TED CHUCKLES.]
That's not supposed to be funny.
I know, but it was.
I'd appreciate it if you stopped laughing.
[CHUCKLES.]
Hey, fuck you.
Excuse me.
I'm-I'm sorry.
I'm just Let me tell you something, my old friend.
I've not come here bearing a festering hatred.
I know not what you've done with yourself these many years but I can only hope that they have not been inhabited by a mere portion of the regret and pain that have filled mine.
[SIGHS.]
And if so, I offer you my deepest sympathies It's not that simple.
Yes, it is.
I'm old.
I don't have much time.
I'm choosing to take a chance.
You can't just turn back time.
Oh, come on.
- My God, you are so stubborn.
- No, I'm not.
As stubborn as you've ever been.
You're like a lonely old man.
You've got nothing, you got nobody.
Who's fault is that? Well, it's not mine, and don't put that all on me.
- Oh? - I accept my part.
- But you - Me?! I acted out of love and dedication, and if I am a lonely old man with nothing and no one, then it's because you I was just a boy, a scared boy! I didn't understand! You were a man! You were a man! You were everything I wanted to be! You had it all! And you took the one thing that I had that you didn't! I didn't take anything! She was a grown woman! ROBERT: She made a choice! Camille I gave up my life as I know it! - Whoa, whoa, whoa! - TED: You stepped right in! Whoa.
OK, just settle down.
I get it.
She came between you and ended the show, and I'm guessing your friendship.
But I've been through break-ups, and eventually you just you move on.
I just can't believe after 40 years this is still so charged.
[SIGHS.]
So what really happened? Well, when Camille joined the show, she instantly fell in love with Ted, our fearless leader.
I can't say I blame her, even as I held a flame for her myself.
But I realized, since Ted had Camille, that he really didn't need me anymore.
And I was terrified.
I was angry whenever you disagreed with me.
I felt that everything was changing, and that I was falling apart.
And then, one night, Camille came to see me to tell me the secret that she alone had harbored.
That she had been bitten.
Bitten? This secret that she held was driving a wedge between her and Ted.
And I encouraged her to tell him.
And I built up her confidence in spite of her changes.
And in doing so, we You two fell in love.
It was an accident.
We couldn't help the way we felt.
[SCOFFS.]
You could've stepped aside instead of driving me insane, making me so terrified of losing her that I would do anything not to.
[SIGHS.]
She would never agree to this.
So, one day, as she slept I put my bare neck on her teeth, and I startled her in her sleep.
I felt her teeth clench into my neck locking our souls together for eternity.
But, uh, it was too late.
She'd already fallen in love with you.
My best friend.
You stole her from me, and you didn't even have the courage to take the bite and commit to her.
I couldn't be the man she wanted me to be.
You stole her to get to me! And then you left her, and then you abandoned us! I had a shot at true happiness, and all of it's gone.
Gone because of you.
All I can say is I'm sorry.
And I miss you.
And I wanna be your friend again.
For as long as I have left.
[SCREAMING.]
Open it! Now! [HISSING.]
Go! I can't control myself! [GRUNTS.]
[GROWLING.]
[GROANS.]
[GRUNTS.]
[BREATHING HEAVILY.]
You dumbass! [GRUNTS.]
[CHOKING.]
Oh, my God.
No! Oh, God.
No.

- Go! - [NINA SCREAMS.]

Say the words with me, then.
"Hello, Darkness.

[WIND HOWLING.]
[DISTANT COYOTE HOWLING.]

for the thrilling conclusion of "So You Think You Can Scream.
" [LAUGHING CONTINUES.]
- ROBERT: Not bad.
- TED: Yeah.
Pretty good.
[TED AND ROBERT LAUGH.]
Oh, man.
This is pretty awful, though.
Yeah, you have to get used to it, otherwise you're gonna have to, um [KNOCK ON DOOR.]
WOMAN: Housekeeping! [CHAINSAW REVS, MAN SCREAMS ON TELEVISION.]
[TV TURNS OFF.]
