All American: Homecoming (2022) s03e13 Episode Script

Survivor

1
WOMAN: I can't believe
it. She's cheating.
- That's what I thought.
- Oh, I thought
Simone, we should get you out of here.
CAM: Yeah. I was gonna tell
y'all the post went viral, but
We're seeing it happen in real time.
Yo, this is crazy.
Do you all know who
started these rumors?
- Was it Cortina?
- It doesn't matter.
The best way to squash a
rumor is with the truth.
So you're gonna tell the Yard
you're taking cancer meds?
No. This is my life. The
press is not entitled to it.
Either the rumor will blow over
or get serious enough for the NCAA
to make a statement and clear my name.
KEISHA: That's reasonable, but
can we still T.P. Cortina's house?
- Because
- I like that.
No. What we're all gonna do
is continue with our evening, please.
Like you and I having that talk?
[CELL PHONE CHIMES]
[CELL PHONE CHIMES]
Coach Loni wants to see me
- just to make sure I'm good.
- All right.
Then let's talk after.
J.R.: Actually, you got a
baseball meeting tonight.
[CHUCKLES] I got some news for us.
Well, then I guess our
talk will just have to wait.
- Tomorrow?
- Yeah.
- I found a sponsor for our club team.
- Yes!
Look. We'll be renting out
the field from Bringston,
and, uh, I know this isn't the ideal way
we envisioned on
playing together, but
No one cares. We get to play, but how?
Who's sponsoring the team?
Well, a newly signed Detroit Tiger
What?
J.R.: Most importantly,
my little brother.
- Hey!
- Hey!
- Yo, yo, what's up?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- What's up?
All right, brother.
[KNOCKS ON DOOR]
ALL: Surprise!
DAMON: [LAUGHS] Man,
this is dope, y'all.
Wait. When did y'all
have time to do all this?
I just got back last night.
Yard Yack told us,
but I'mma let it slide
'cause I'm glad to see ya.
[CHUCKLES]
CAM: Yeah, bruh. You got
signed, like, two weeks ago.
We've been ready to turn
up for you, man. My boy.
KEISHA: Oh, we knew you were
bound to pull up sooner or later.
- Uh!
- THEA: And, luckily,
I got back to town just in
time to watch everybody set up.
NATE: Girl
Welcome back.
It's really good to see you.
J.R.: Hey, y'all can
talk later. We got to eat.
KEISHA: Oh? You get a little more.
NATE: Hey, girl, I'm
talking about them piggies.
[PLATES RATTLE]
- All right.
- Wait, wait. Hold on.
What was it like to finally
sign with an MLB team?
I mean, honestly, better
than I could've ever imagined.
[CHUCKLES] I mean, the type of
faith that they were putting in me
had my mom clutching her
pearls with that signing bonus.
[LAUGHTER]
Part of which you used
to fund the club team.
NATE: Well, I'm calling on all
y'all to help clear this table,
so chop chop.
Hey, um
appreciate you putting
all this together.
Consider it a
"I'm sorry I left you in the
dark about my cancer" breakfast.
Yeah. That bothered me,
but, I mean, I get it.
You didn't want to distract
me from kicking ass in D.R.
And you did.
I mean, the Detroit Tigers? What?
- I'm proud of you.
- Well, be proud of you, too.
I am. I mean,
you freakin' beat cancer, Simone,
and you took your team
to the number-one spot
in the conference and
the CSSN documentary.
That time apart,
we made it count.
Yeah,
guess we did.
Hey, aren't you supposed to be in D.C.?
Aren't you supposed to be
at Damon's family breakfast?
Preparing for Noah's visit today.
Board meeting to discuss my
initiatives for Bringston.
Being part of the White
House HBCU Committee worked.
It's given me the clout I
need to make real change.
So how does prepping for Noah
translate to playing with your homework?
I'm actually finishing paperwork
for his mental evaluation tomorrow.
Mental evaluation?
You think Noah could be bipolar?
Maybe. It's hereditary.
This is why I was afraid to have kids.
You won't know until you know,
but whatever happens,
you and Crystal will handle it together.
- Thanks for that.
- Mm.
Go. Get your president on,
and, for what it's worth,
I'm glad you and I were at
at least able to do this part again.
Me, too.
Hey
I didn't get the chance to tell you,
but your set was dope.
Appreciate you
for the shine and the push last night.
That was one hell of
a speech in my room.
I heard about the tour
with Luam and Alina Vega.
- What?
- Yeah. Yeah.
Well, speaking of Luam,
I asked her to invite Big
Hank to your show last night.
Did he show up?
Nah. I didn't see him.
[CELL PHONE CHIMES]
You should probably get that.
SIMONE: Hey, I'm about
to head to my interview.
Is everything good?
The tour was just moved up.
It's during finals week.
If you skip finals, you
won't be able to graduate.
You can't be in two places at once.
The team switched conferences,
ranked number one
heading into the finals,
breaking a 20-year-plus drought,
and now you're having a
documentary made about you.
The Bringston female tennis
team has had quite a year.
- How does it feel?
- It feels amazing.
I can't believe you're
actually doing a story on us.
How do you feel about Cortina Westgate
calling for the NCAA to
investigate you over doping rumors?
Well, I think Cortina
is just in her feelings.
I haven't taken anything that's
considered performance-enhancing.
But you have before freshman year,
unintentionally and if you're
found to have done so again,
you'll be disqualified.
Your last match will no longer count,
and your team will pay the price.
Is there anything you want to say
or get ahead of, Simone?
So on top of comments on Yard Yack,
you got this little CSSN
reporter running her mouth.
Don't let me see her.
Auntie, it is fine.
The NCAA released a
statement clearing me
of taking any
performance-enhancing drugs,
so I can just put it all behind me.
And what about the situation
still in front of you?
I don't know what you're talking about.
Little girl, don't play with me.
- Fine.
- [CHUCKLES]
I love Lando,
and nothing's gonna change
just because Damon's
here for a few days.
Sometimes when you see
an ex after a long time,
feelings can resurface, and
they can be hard to manage.
I just don't want you caught off guard
- before you commit to Lando.
- I understand, but
that's definitely not gonna happen.
All right. See you later.
- OK. Love you.
- Love you, too.
Bye.
CRYSTAL: For the record,
I will never forgive you for this.
Crystal, listen. I know you
still feel a way about Noah
- undergoing evaluation, but listen.
- Of course I do.
You have our son so scared
thinking something's wrong with him
that I had to agree
just to ease his mind.
Look. I hope I'm wrong,
- but if I'm not, I mean
- Our son is fine,
and when that little
doctor tells you that,
what I want from you is an apology.
Oh, my gosh, I don't know
why I feel so nervous.
'Cause you're about to tell the man
that you love that you love him.
Nerves are part of this moment,
but it will be iconic.
Little Mielle gel will
get these edges right.
THEA: Your dress is beautiful.
Your hair is stunning.
Lando's gonna be eating out
of the palm of your hand.
- [KNOCKS ON DOOR]
- [DOOR OPENS]
- Oh, hey.
- Hey.
- Hi, babe.
- THEA: Look,
one more person to hopefully
talk some sense into Nate.
- Oh
- I have news. It's not great.
THEA: Well, so does
she, not sure what kind.
Uh, it says, "Bringston Law."
Didn't they already waitlist you?
Exactly, which means this could
Could be the letter telling
you the wait is over.
That's what we said.
Or that I officially didn't get in.
You won't know until you open it.
SIMONE: That's what we've
been trying to get her to do,
but she insisted on doing my hair.
Babe, come on, moment of truth.
Yeah.
Fine.
Hmm.
- I got in.
- Oh, my God.
- Ohh
- Hey.
- Oh
- I knew it,
- told you.
- You knew nothing.
Congrats, babe, my lawyer.
[LAUGHS]
Oh.
What was your not-so-great news?
I don't want to ruin the mood,
but Ezra's attackers are
getting a plea deal
probation and community service.
Wait. Is your cousin
still representing them?
- Mm-hmm.
- Val was able to sell the judge
on them not being a danger to society
since this was their first offense.
I can't imagine how
Ezra must be feeling.
This is not how the legal
system is supposed to work.
I know you're not planning
on letting this go,
so if anyone can get new
information, it's you.
Congratulations for finally
bringing baseball back to Bringston.
Well, you were a big part of that,
but I hear you, um
you're dropping out of this tour?
Yeah.
Missing finals isn't an option, so
Then join the tour late.
I asked. It's also not an option.
OK. Well, if you can't
join the tour late,
then how about you take the finals early
or at least ask your professor in a way
where you're not
taking no for an answer.
- You are so right.
- [CHUCKLES]
Thank you. I'll see you later.
DAMON: So it's Keisha.
We started as just friends and then, um,
got into something a little different,
well, for me, at least.
- I'm not sure how she feels.
- OK. Look.
If Keisha's the one,
you go for it,
but, bro, have you thought about Cam?
Yes, man.
Look. He was my brother,
and I've tried to make things right.
He's made it very clear
where I stand with him.
Huh. Look.
I don't know if y'all
can come back from this,
but I do know that
if you go after Keisha and you
don't let Cam know out of respect
that's a wrap for y'all for sure.
Look at you, getting all
wise out there in the D.R.
Man, I wouldn't say all that
[CHUCKLES]
but I have thought a lot about my life
and who I want in it.
And that's Simone.
Man, we sacrificed our
relationship to live out our dreams,
and, bruh, we did that.
I mean, is it crazy to,
like, want back what we lost?
No. It's not crazy,
but, just so you know, her and Lando
have gotten closer this past year.
I don't know what the dynamic
is outside of that, so
[DOOR OPENS]
I covered for you at family breakfast.
- You're welcome.
- Appreciate you.
I just couldn't take
another front-row seat
to the "Simone and Damon Show."
Bruh, it wasn't even like that.
Look. I know Simone. It's you all day.
[CHUCKLES]
She texted,
said to meet her at the Lion's Den,
and she said to come "GQ,"
so I think she got a thing planned.
See?
I bet she's gonna say the thing.
Then you can say the thing
and give her this damn book
so these half-naked pictures
of my sister are out of my room.
[LAUGHS]
Oh, I don't know, bro. I just can't
ignore the fact that
Damon's back in town.
Like, there's no way
he's not here for her.
Yeah, but that doesn't mean
he's gonna get her back.
Look. All year,
you've been the dude
Simone's been rocking with.
Yeah. Yeah. You're right. You're right.
I should trust that and stop obsessing.
Facts.
What about you?
Did you thank Keisha for Big Hank?
I actually told her that he didn't show.
What? Why?
Bro, thanks to her, you're
an official recording artist.
I don't know why I lied,
but that's got to mean something, right?
I mean, if I can't tell her
about something this big,
maybe we really are done.
- All right.
- Appreciate it.
DAMON: Whoa.
Excuse me, miss,
but you might hurt
somebody in this dress.
Well, I woke up this way,
so I can't be responsible
for any casualties.
[CHUCKLES]
I'm glad I ran into
you. You got a minute?
Actually, can we talk tomorrow?
Yeah, for sure, but
since they're, like, making
statements about you now,
- should I call the NCAA or
- OK. Whatever. Ha!
Uh, but seriously, um,
I'm glad that the
doping rumors are done,
just sorry I won't be able to
see you kick ass in your finals.
OK. Well, excuse me, Mr. MLB.
I didn't really want you there, anyway.
[BOTH LAUGH]
Um, I really got to get to this thing.
- Oh, yeah. Um, I'll catch you later.
- Cool.
Uh, thank you.
You went all out.
Well, I wanted tonight to be special.
It's long overdue.
Listen, Simone.
I appreciate you keeping
this on the books for tonight,
but Damon's back, so let's not pretend.
What are you talking about?
I saw the two of you just now.
Lando, I don't know
what you think you saw,
but Damon and I are just friends.
Well, you only broke up
because he moved countries
to play ball, and now he's back.
So that automatically means
I'm getting back with him?
What did you feel
when you saw him again?
All right. Maybe what we
have as friends is enough.
- Maybe
- No, Lando.
I prepared a whole speech, but, um
I'll just get to the end.
I say this with my full heart.
I want you.
I want us.
I love you.
[CHUCKLES]
You don't know how long I've
wanted to hear those words
but I can't trust them.
I'm sorry.
Huh.
Baby.
Damn, Ryan moves fast.
- Are those for moi?
- Yes.
You are about to be the baddest bitch
at Bringston Law this fall.
Mm, you already know.
Thank you, my love.
Of course. I love you.
So how did it go with your professors?
Are you able to take your finals early?
Yeah. They all agreed.
It was my dance professor
that was the hard sell.
She's making me choreograph
a routine in two days.
I actually already got a location.
Um, I'm using the photo studio,
and one of my classmates agreed
to be my partner, so
I think I'm all good.
Color me inspired.
Is a certain J.R. responsible
for said inspiration?
- Nate, please do not do this.
- Too late. Come on.
With everything y'all have
shared, it would be understandable
for y'all to develop
feelings for each other.
J.R. and I are just friends, OK?
Plus, I have been thinking
about my relationships recently
and how I'm always in one.
I think, now that I'm out
of my self-sabotage era,
I'm gonna step into this next one solo.
Hmm.
Oh, no, ma'am.
You funny thinking you're not
gonna tell us what happened.
I told that boy I loved him,
and do you know what he said?
"I don't believe you."
He thinks because Damon's
back in the country
we'll eventually get back together.
I'm sorry. This is the part where
you say Lando's acting crazy.
It's just,
all of the reasons that you and
Damon couldn't be together are gone.
Are you sure you haven't thought
about getting back what you lost?
Damon and I are just friends.
Just like Keisha and J.R.
Um, I'm gonna grab my flowers,
- and I'm gonna go to bed.
- Good night.
Whatever. I'm over today.
Well, you man really is the business.
Miss. "Assault Perpetrators,
"Ezra Hayes Not Their First
Victim. Article drops soon."
The plea deal Ezra's
attackers were getting
is contingent upon it being
their first offense, right?
Well, looks like Ryan
found another victim.
Interesting.
OK, not too much on Ryan.
I know an angry text when I hear one.
Well, I'm trying to figure out
why I'm hearing about this on Yard Yack.
[BOOP BOOP]
- What is it?
- "Just talked to them.
Another disabled person in
Decatur they attacked last year."
Oh. "I promised them anonymity
for their own safety."
OK.
Uh, OK, enough with the angry texting.
Well, we can't stop the plea
deal and get justice for Ezra
without the name of the other victim.
Well, I mean, Nate, if
Ryan promised them anonymity, then,
I mean, good luck getting that name.
I mean, you know how much his
journalistic integrity means to him.
Right.
OK.
[DING]
Come on.
[WHISTLE BLOWS]
[WHISTLE BLOWS]
[SIGHS] Tootie,
the conference finals is in two days.
We can't win if they show up like this.
We're dragging because we're literally
being dragged on Yard Yack
about the doping rumors.
Well, the NCAA cleared me.
Yeah, of taking PEDs,
but they didn't deny
that you took something.
Now everyone's wondering what you took
and if the rest of us did, too.
Who can focus on the finals, Simone?
- You need to fix this.
- Well, what do you expect me to do?
Tell the truth.
You clearly took something.
I did,
but that doesn't mean my
business needs to be on the street
just because people
need to touch some grass.
OK, but we are your teammates.
People are lying on our names.
Don't we deserve to know the truth?
Tootie, can you please just trust me?
Trust, huh?
You mean the way you trusted
us this entire season?
Something's been up
with you this whole time.
I could tell, and I was hoping
that with time, you'd trust me,
but clearly I was wrong.
[WHISTLE BLOWS]
[RACQUET HITS BALL]
I just heard from Luam.
Turns out, Big Hank
did come to your show.
Yeah. I was gonna tell you.
He offered me a record deal.
Why didn't you?
Cam, I know that we're
not together anymore, but
we used to talk about this,
talk about how you were
going to achieve this dream,
planned on how you were gonna do it.
Why is it so hard for you to
tell me that you finally did it?
Mhh
[CELL PHONE CHIMES]
Great.
You didn't tell me that
you achieved your goals,
and mine is slipping away.
Why? What's up?
Cam, we don't do this anymore,
- so I'm gonna go.
- Look. I know I messed up, a'ight,
but that don't mean I don't care.
What's going on?
My dance partner sprained his ankle.
He can't come tomorrow.
I saw the group chat.
You got to take your final
early so you can graduate, right?
- Yeah.
- Can't you just reschedule it?
No. Tomorrow's my only shot,
so if you'll excuse
me, I have to go rework
my choreography for one person.
[EXHALES]
All right.
[DOOR CLOSES]
Penny for your thoughts.
Huh?
It's how old people ask,
"What are you thinking?"
Scared.
It's normal, son.
Dad, what does it mean to be bipolar?
Will I still be me?
For a person with bipolar disorder,
emotions are like waves during a storm
with higher highs and lower lows
and also periods of calm.
Does that make sense?
Yeah.
How did you handle it?
I mean, you always seem OK to me.
Yeah.
I work at it, but I
definitely have my moments,
and the people that really
love me always stood by me
just like we all will with you, son, OK?
Well, "all" is pretty much just you.
Hey, how'd you know we'd be here?
Uh, didn't take much digging.
I asked around at the Wellness Center.
- Hey, Noah.
- Hey.
You guys are really all here for me?
CAM: Bro, what are you talking
about? Of course we are.
J.R.: Coach Marcus is family,
so that mean you are, too.
And if there's one thing
we do well, it's family.
Yeah, so anything you need,
anything you want, we'll
be right here for you.
- [LAUGHS]
- What's up, Coach?
What's up? Yo, man.
Man. Pphhh ha!
Remember what you said to
me that night on the field?
Remember when I asked,
like, what you gonna do
without me as the son around
giving you all them gray hairs?
Looks like God always has a plan, right?
Yeah.
Hey, Damon.
What's up, little bro?
What's up?
I mean, I heard about you.
My dad talks about you a lot.
Yeah, you, too.
- Good to finally meet you.
- Same here.
All right, son. It's time.
[DOOR CLOSES]
Simone, you can't avoid me forever.
With everything going on, I
just want to know if you're OK.
Dumb question. Copy that.
Look. I'll give you your space,
but just know that, as
complicated as things are,
I'll never stop caring about you.
[EXHALES]
I'm too tired to fight with you, too.
There's already enough of
that happening with the team.
I wish I could just not care.
Maybe a year ago, I could've.
But you're not that
Simone Hicks anymore.
This Simone would use her platform
to talk about an important issue
while shutting down the haters.
I just hate the fact that my opponents
and everyone else will look at me
as if I'm damaged or weak.
Is that how you see yourself?
No.
Then screw everybody else.
Don't let fear guide you.
I'm not the only one that's
ruled by fear right now.
You think you know how the story will go
if you speak your truth,
but what's the story if you don't?
Because I know when it comes to us,
Lando, you feel how I feel.
Crystal, you changed your mind.
Yeah.
Your ex-girlfriend's a
pain in the ass. [CHUCKLES]
She low-key stalked me,
but when she reminded
me that Black women
stand up for the kids in our lives,
she made me take a
hard look in the mirror.
And?
I mean,
I fear that he'll be stigmatized
by his friends, by teachers,
doctors who drop the ball.
I mean, what if I'm not strong
enough to advocate for him?
What if he feels different and alone?
I just want him to have a great life.
MARCUS: Now, Crystal,
you're a force of nature,
OK, and I know I've lived
things you fear for Noah,
but together, we'll
guide him through it,
OK, and he's not alone, all right?
Just look around at the support he has.
And that's support he wouldn't have had
if I had my way and he'd never met you.
Marcus, I'm so sorry that
I kept you from our son,
but I'm so glad that you
are in his life right now.
Look. I am, too,
and since that means being
in your life, as well,
just know that you
have me if you need me
because what we share trumps
fears, lies, and secrets.
[DOOR OPENS]
CRYSTAL: Oh
baby are you OK?
OK, son. Well done. Ahh.
[KNOCKS ON DOOR]
Cam, um, sorry. Whatever
it is, I don't have time.
It'll be worth it, I promise.
[DOOR CLOSES]
I used to love talking
about our dreams together
and how to make them happen,
but for me, those were never just talks
about our individual futures.
They were talks about
our futures together.
Then our dreams started happening.
You got this dope tour,
I got my record deal,
and I know if we start
talking about it
It would be like talking
about my future and
your future, but not
our futures together,
and that's just a reminder
that we're moving on without each other.
In terms of reasons
of keeping a secret
- That's a pretty good one, wasn't it?
- Yeah. It is.
Thank you for telling me,
but I really do have to go.
My dance partner quit on me, so
I remember,
and that's why I'm here.
Let me be your dance partner.
My final's tomorrow. I'd have to
teach you all the choreo tonight.
How many times have you and I
danced to your choreography?
Come on. It's you and me.
We got this.
You helped me reach my dream.
Now let me help you reach yours.
OK.
- Thank you.
- Of course.
Hey, y'all, you got a second?
What's up? We need to warm up.
So I'm speaking with Lillie Arnold
from CSSN about the doping rumors,
but I wanted y'all to hear
what I had to say first.
You know, I didn't ask
for breast cancer, but
I think that there's a greater
purpose for me having it,
so if my story can
encourage even one woman
to listen to her body,
one doctor to listen to a Black woman
when she says that she's in pain,
or educate someone that breast cancer
isn't just some old person's disease
and young women need mammograms, too,
then this journey was worth it to me.
Thank you for sharing your story.
Anything else you'd like to add?
Yeah.
I'm blessed to be one of the lucky ones.
I caught my cancer early.
My prognosis was good,
and I had access to
resources, but the truth is,
that's not always the case,
but it should be.
My cancer story should be
every woman's cancer story,
and I'm not gonna rest until it is.
Playback.
[AVANT'S "MY FIRST LOVE" PLAYING]
[CAMERA BEEPING AND CLICKING]
[MUSIC STOPS]
PROFESSOR VILLEN: Ms.
McCalla, that was well done.
I'll go over my notes and
will let you know tomorrow.
Thank you, Professor Villen.
Thank you.
It means a lot that you stepped up.
Of course. It's my pleasure.
Well, I'll see y'all later.
- Bye.
- All right.
Bro, did you seriously just
let her walk out of here?
Man, whatever. It was just a dance.
Bro, what I just saw
was y'all's love story
expressed through that dance,
and from what I can see,
it is not over, not even close.
Look. I know you're scared,
all right, but you can't
let fear keep you from
the best thing in your life.
Um, all right. Uh, I've
actually got to bounce.
I'll see you soon, all right?
Hey, you.
Breaking news
Ezra's attackers are being charged
with the assault of the original victim.
Eyewitness came forward
and agreed to testify.
You found and spoke to the
first victim, didn't you?
I couldn't stand by and do nothing.
I get it. I know who I'm dating.
Case in point, you could've found
the first victim's
name in a lot of ways.
You're very resourceful.
Just tell me that resource wasn't me.
You went through my private notes?
I did what I had to do
to get justice for Ezra.
And my trust is that expendable?
- Oh, Ryan, it's just one name.
