Queen Sugar (2016) s03e13 Episode Script

From On the Pulse of Morning

1 Previously on Queen Sugar.
DARLA: Maybe we should just split the time.
50-50? I sold Queen Sugar to the Landrys.
You're doing business with the devil, Charley.
I did it so we could all live to fight another day.
But this prison, if they build it, that day will never come.
I remember you said "always fight for what you believe, no matter who it scares.
" I'm seeing Remy.
When did that ever start? I thought it was something real, otherwise I never would have done it.
First it's the story about your daddy, now it's this.
[SIREN BUZZES.]
Dreams never die Take flight As the world turns Dreams never die Take flight As the world turns Keep the colors In the lines Take flight Dreams never die Keep the colors In the lines Keep the colors In the lines, take flight Regardless of what I did regardless of the time being spent in here I had to get straight.
For my little man.
For myself.
When I first got out, it wasn't easy on the outside.
I ain't lying.
Most mornings I just stand there in the shower crying.
Still felt institutionalized.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
Isolated.
Felt like nobody could see me.
My family kept me straight.
And I know a lot of y'all ain't got that.
That's why we got each other.
And it's our job to make sure we all straight all the time.
Feel me? I mean, that's why I'm here.
You know one thing my daddy gave me when he died? Purpose.
Left me his land.
Boy, I tell you my hands milling that soil, harvesting them stalks man, that gave me worth.
Real work gave me life.
I can sit back at night and just I can say I did that.
That's mine.
Man, a year and a half later, back in here with y'all.
[LAUGHS.]
But I ain't all my old ways, though.
Running my own farm.
Hiring guys like yourself.
Teach them the land.
Hoping they see a future for themselves.
Bigger than all this.
It's life, you know what I'm saying? Freedom.
It's precious, man.
Here one day, gone tomorrow.
You're worth something.
You're worth something.
You're worth something.
You're worth something.
You're worth something.
You're worth something.
Now look at y'all.
[CHUCKLES.]
I see new beginnings.
Choices.
I see hope.
Want to y'all get out of here go live your life.
When you find something good and you wrap your heart around it.
Don't let it go.
It's all we got.
I appreciate y'all hearing me out.
I appreciate your time.
[KEVIN.]
What you said was real inspiring.
Hmm! And they seemed to take it to heart.
Felt good trying to reach them.
[SIGHS.]
Man, I'd love to talk about what you're already doing out there, with Emmanuel and Benny.
Look, I got a friend, woman runs a re-entry program just right outside Baton Rouge.
I'd love for you to just sit down.
The two of you.
Some type of collaboration.
I don't know, Kev.
- Just got a lot going on now.
- [CELL PHONE RINGS.]
Just barely hanging on as it is, man.
Hold on, I've been waiting on this phone call.
Don't leave, all right? Hello? [SIGHS.]
[SIGHS.]
Been waiting on this call.
Well, I got some good news.
That was a rep from headquarters.
Your early request just got approved.
[LAUGHS.]
Don't lie to me, Kev.
You're going to be a free man in a month.
[CLAPS HANDS.]
[LAUGHS.]
- I don't even - You earned it, brother.
I don't even know what to say right now.
You earned it.
I'll see you.
Appreciate it, Kev.
You did it.
Emails have gone out, fliers are up around town.
Your mama's been the queen of PR.
We should talk about your lineup of speakers.
So Council Member Isabel Barrera.
You okay? Hmm? Sorry.
Um Isabel Barrera.
- Yeah.
- What's going on? Umm None of my friends showed.
We haven't really been talking since everything went down, but I thought at least they'd show up to this.
It's good to have your friends in your corner, but sometimes being a leader means walking alone.
Look at all this.
This is you.
You did this.
- Hey.
- Hey.
Ready to take the lead? Want to run the schedule down with everyone? - Sure.
- Okay.
Go get them.
Um excuse me, everybody.
- Micah! - Hey, Blue.
Um can everybody hear me? [SHUSHING.]
Yeah, okay.
Okay, well, thank you all for coming out today.
I just want to go over the schedule a little bit.
Okay, we're going to meet at St.
Jo Park at 8:00 a.
m.
And then we're going to march to the courthouse.
It's actually a couple blocks away from where the rally'll take place.
Uh we'll have signs up Son, you got to speak up.
- We can't hear you.
- I'm sorry.
I was just saying that we're going to meet up at the St.
Jo Park, and then we're going to march to the courthouse.
- And then - [SHUSHING.]
um, sorry.
[OTIS.]
Charley, what is he saying? Uh, yeah, he's saying we'll meet at the St.
Jo Park at 8:00 a.
m.
, and then we'll move to the courthouse from there.
Y'all want to explain these fliers you're handing out? Yes.
Thank you, Mr.
Prosper.
So it's actually really critical that everyone stays on message.
And the fliers that Prosper has, they're actually talking points for social media, with reference to community members and council members, you know, contrary to the continued lies that MPTE keeps regurgitating.
We all know this jail will ruin this community.
All of this reminds me of the old days.
Us out there in our anti-Bush T-shirts and signs.
Standing on the steps of the Union with a bullhorn about the lead poisoning in the Mississippi.
Mm.
Those were the days.
I talked to some colleagues at the firm, and they're willing to volunteer legal services if it comes down to it.
I appreciate that.
Okay, so just hit me.
I can take it.
It's stirring, provocative, heartbreaking, and it's going to mean so much to so many people.
I mean Nova, it's it's your best work.
No question.
But with that said, this lays everything bare.
I mean, does your family know? Did they give you permission for all of this? It's from their interviews.
Interviews they gave willingly.
But, no they haven't read it.
[SIGHS.]
Girl Everyone's telling me, write your own story, speak your truth, raw, unflinching.
This is what I want to say.
These words are who I am, even as painful as some were to write.
Well, this is a whole lot of truth.
And it's a very fine line claiming other people's stories.
Just based off what you told me about Vi's reaction so far, if you decide to publish this as is People need to be having these conversations.
The black community needs to be having these conversations.
True, but this is a lot, Nova.
This could be explosive.
You're playing with fire.
That was James Beard-worthy.
I have a few more up my sleeve.
Oh, yeah? Yeah.
Thank you.
Everyone at the clinic's been talking about the rally.
Good.
Good.
Yeah, we could use a really solid turnout.
I volunteered for Councilwoman Barrera's campaign when I first moved out here.
Yeah? She's been a true force for immigration issues.
Hmm.
A major advocate for this community.
[SIGHS.]
You know, when I lived in L.
A "community" wasn't a word I fully understood.
How so? My ex was a basketball player, and I managed him professionally.
My former life.
Our whole world sort of revolved around his career.
Branding and networking and deals and money.
I don't know.
I guess that's those are the things that we valued.
So, what changed? Losing my father, for one.
[SIGHS.]
My mother would always say love grows from humble hearts.
And then she'd talk your ear off about her little Romero and make you sit through stacks and stacks of baby photos.
[BOTH LAUGH.]
So, what would she tell me about baby Romero? Oh, baby Romero.
That I was her cerebrito.
I wore these big glasses.
Had braces.
A lisp.
And I was always teacher's pet.
[LAUGHS.]
- Seriously? - Oh, yeah.
And kids at school were very cruel.
Third grade, specifically.
Well, what happened in third grade? We had to do this dance for the parents and students.
What's the expression? Two left feet, or something like that? Yeah.
That was me.
I probably had, like, four left feet.
[BOTH LAUGH.]
So all summer, the neighborhood kids picked on me.
- Wow.
- Yeah.
What was this dance? I I tried to block it out forever.
Come on, you got to show me the dance.
- Oh, wow.
- You got to show me the dance.
- Are you serious? - Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
[LAUGHS.]
Okay.
Really? Oh, I want to see the dance of trauma.
- [BOTH LAUGH.]
- And scars.
Okay, okay, okay.
[LAUGHS.]
Let's see okay, but you have to do it with me.
Yeah? Deal.
It's a deal.
- Okay.
- Okay.
All right.
And you're very serious about this? Oh, I want to see this dance of infamy.
[CHUCKLES.]
Okay.
[HUMS.]
[LAUGHS.]
- [BOTH CLAP.]
- That's so good.
It was it was two left feet.
No, that was not at all.
Okay, your turn.
- Your turn.
- Why did I make this deal? You're going to be fine.
You're going to be fine.
Okay.
Okay, are you ready? Yeah, and it's all in the knees, so you have to make sure that you bend.
Oh, keep them loose.
- Yes.
- Okay.
- You got to do the music.
- I will.
Okay, because I need that.
Five, six, seven [BOTH LAUGH.]
And then you have to I feel like I'm stepping on [LAUGHING.]
- Oh, right.
- Yes.
And the girls go like this, with their dress.
What are they, fanning? - Are they fanning the? - Yes.
Oh, the dresses.
They're spinning with their dresses.
I would I would go like this.
- [LAUGHS.]
- No eye contact.
Right, okay.
I'm just going to spin.
Wow.
It's been a while, clearly.
[LAUGHS.]
Clearly.
Oh! What? I don't know.
I just I love your joy.
Thank you.
You really showed those neighborhood kids.
You are now a phenomenal dancer.
[LAUGHS.]
You you help people all the time.
You just are a really good human.
And I would say the same about you.
The flowers still Are blooming Then leaves will turn again But time will be Frozen for us Ah, ah Ah, ah Time will be frozen for us Ah, ah Ah, ah Time will be frozen for us Whether they're ready for us, we're ready for them.
We will do whatever it takes to keep our families and community together.
We will not yield to MPTE and their lies.
READ OUR LIPS: no new prisons! [CROWD.]
No new prisons! [APPLAUSE.]
We may have lost the vote, but until that first shovel breaks ground, until that first prisoner walks through its doors, this fight is not over.
- That's right! - [WOMAN.]
Speak that truth.
[ISABEL.]
We stand against this, because it's wrong.
It's wrong now, and it's wrong for our future.
And I think it's time we heard from that future.
Please welcome an upstanding young man.
Micah West.
[APPLAUSE.]
Hello.
Thank you.
Thank you, Councilwoman Barrera.
It's an honor to speak to all of you today.
I believe there are several reasons we need to stop this prison from being built.
Number one, research shows the benefits MPTE promises will come to our community are just that: empty and expensive promises.
Number two um - [APPLAUSE.]
- [LAUGHS.]
[HOLLYWOOD.]
You got it, you got it.
- You got it.
- Come on, baby.
I came here today because I wanted the folks out there to hear us.
But what we really need is for them to feel us.
To feel me.
See, right now, standing here I'm bleeding.
You can't see it, but I've been hurt.
Violated.
And deep down, a part of me knows that I'll always have to live with that.
I know that now.
Last year, I was driving and a cop here pulled me over.
But instead of giving me a ticket and letting me go, he put a gun in my mouth.
Huh? VIOLET: I didn't know that.
It was empty, but I didn't know that until he pulled the trigger and just laughed.
You know, since then I've been wondering, like, why this officer felt that he could abuse me and just walk away.
And the only answer I can think of is, this cop felt his dignity, his life, was worth more than mine.
But I won't allow my fear, my silence to protect this man anymore.
My abuser's name is Officer Randall Orson.
[CROWD GASPS.]
See, the real problem if we build this prison is it tells cops like Randall Orson that it's okay to do what he did.
The real problem is if they build that jail, the prison, they're going to fill it.
The real cost of the prison isn't in dollars and cents.
Okay? Prisons aren't made of bricks and mortar.
They're made of bodies.
And blood.
If we allow this, St.
Jo becomes another place that puts hope in cages and continues to systematically destroys the lives of black and brown people.
But we can stop that.
[CROWD MURMURS.]
I truly believe that we we are the ones we've been waiting for.
[APPLAUSE.]
You see, I'm one of the lucky ones.
All right? I survived.
I'm here.
I got a mom and a dad that can help me.
But what if I didn't have that? Right? What happens to me then? If they build this prison, St.
Jo becomes another example of what's wrong with America, instead of what's right.
[APPLAUSE.]
[CROWD CHEERS.]
[CROWD, CHANTING.]
No new prisons! No new prisons! No new prisons! No new prisons! No new prisons! No new prisons! Okay, this one is over in Lutcher.
It's got a nice little covered patio.
It's a good location.
Looks nice.
I know I'm bombarding you with all these places, but, you know, we can take our time and get it right.
Well, it's it's it's great.
It's really, really great.
I just am trying to, you know, take it all in.
I understand.
I know the hospital was a bit of a scare.
And I appreciate you telling me.
And all this, it's it's a lot of change.
So I didn't expect it to go so fast.
[JARRETT.]
Sure.
Which is why there's one more spot.
And this one, I don't know, it it might make things a little easier.
Maybe feel a little more like home.
What? Where's the listing? You're sitting in it.
What? Clive is retiring.
Just put this place on the market.
Are you serious? Just a few days ago.
Wow.
I remember day I was hired here, almost 20 years ago.
Here I was, this 40-something-year-old woman applying for a waitressing job.
But I was grateful for that job.
This place became my second home.
They helped me carve out a little piece of my independence.
And before long, I was making double everybody else's tips.
[LAUGHS.]
I can believe that.
Took another 18 years before Clive made me manager, and I had to fight tooth and nail for that.
Well, this can all be yours.
Hmm.
If St.
Jo allows this to happen, it becomes another place that puts hope in cages and continues to systematically destroys the lives of black and brown people.
I feel like they're still going to build that jail.
Maybe.
But we started an important conversation.
Look at this.
Over 300,000 views in just a few hours.
Babe, this is momentum.
This creates change.
You did that.
[SIGHS.]
All I did was tell the truth.
Well, if standing up and telling the truth was easy, everyone would do it.
This kind of traction, this can't be ignored.
Trust me.
[NEWS REPORTER, ON TV.]
accusations against Officer Randall Orson continue to pour in.
More victims are stepping forward.
As details of the alleged assault More victims? I can't - It just doesn't stop.
- Celebrities around the country are starting to express their support of Micah West and his cause.
Many are vowing to support the fight against the MPTE's further expansion into Louisiana.
But despite the opposition, there are no plans to delay building the state's new correctional facility in St.
Jo.
[TURNS TV OFF.]
No matter what, I couldn't be more proud of you.
You fought.
Glad you came to the rally.
Doing a little celebration by the house tomorrow.
Asked us to dress up and come by.
Please tell Micah that I say congratulations.
It was a very brave thing that he did.
You you bought him this? Yeah, I did.
Apparently it's something, a very big deal, that all of his friends have.
But we have to build it.
Uh, well, he asked if we could all build it together.
But if it feels weird for you, I completely understand Nah, that's that's fine.
I'd love to.
It'll be fun.
[CLEARS THROAT, SIGHS.]
I want to be okay.
You and me.
I want us to be okay.
Good.
He said she's really nice.
Trinh, right? Yeah.
Trinh.
He said that she's been teaching him about different kinds of fish.
And apparently she knows a lot about fish.
I mean, she works at the plant.
She real cool.
Got to see whole different side of the world with her.
It's way bigger than I thought.
You know, me and her not together no more.
I told her I just had a lot to deal with, so I'm going to see her at work.
I mean, we're just going to be friends.
Blue's my only focus right now.
I want you to be happy, Ralph Angel.
Please know that.
I want Blue to see us both happy and respectful.
However we find that.
I just want you to be okay.
I'm more than okay.
I'm I'm healthy.
I'm sober.
I I mean, I have my struggles, but I think of Blue.
I think of his joy.
And I walk through it.
I'm proud of you.
I respect how you stay straight for our little man.
Thank you for that.
What are you guys doing? Just talking.
Talking about you.
Did you tell Pop about building the ocean together? - Yes, I did.
- Oh, yeah, she did.
He's very excited about us building it together.
- Are you both excited? - I'm super excited.
I don't know how we gonna build an ocean.
I already read the instructions.
I'll be the leader.
[RALPH ANGEL.]
All right.
I'll teach you.
- Okay.
- Dad? [RALPH ANGEL.]
All right.
[BLUE.]
I'll do the bottom.
- You take another one.
- Okay.
Maybe I should find out what I'm going to do with it.
- You take this one.
- All right.
And you take this one.
Is that the ocean? These are like little fish You clearly have MPTE on the ropes.
But what I want is an outright Knockout punch.
[LAUGHS.]
I'm listening.
We kill two birds with one stone.
Defeat the prison plan, and take out your brother at the same time.
I like where this is going.
What can I do? Give me the books.
The real ones.
If another set of books existed, they would damage Sam and the entire company.
I'd be hurting the very business we want to control.
Perhaps.
But once MPTE sees that Sam is even dirtier and in more debt than they thought, they'll back away from doing business with him.
And so will the prison backers in the state legislature.
The whole thing will fall like a row of dominoes.
And then you can sweep in and be the hero.
Clean up the good old boy's club and save your family name.
I'll need to protect myself.
Ensure I have complete control.
I'll need some of your shares.
That's a major ask.
We're businesswomen.
It's all a major ask.
What about my seat at the table? You'll always have a seat at my table, Charley, but you've been out front on this prison thing.
If you're involved with leaking Sam's books, it'll look more like an agenda being served instead of the truth.
Which makes what the real books reveals more dismissible.
One percent.
But I want a few things in return.
Shoot.
First, I want all of the farmers who were leasing with you to move back into their homes.
At favorable rates.
It's not just good business.
It's great PR which is good business for you, as the new head of the company.
Also, I want my mill back.
Queen Sugar belongs in the Bordelon family.
It'll cost you.
I want more of your shares.
More than 1%, dear.
Much more.
Well, then you're going to have to give up a whole hell of a lot more than just the mill.
You ready, Mr.
Prosper? Yup.
I can take this last one outside.
Thank you.
[CHARLEY.]
Got everything? Yes, ma'am.
Oh, you got the address to Billie's hotel? Got it.
Yeah, she said we'll settle up my affairs in a few days, and then head back to Chicago.
Get to spend more time with the kids.
Sure am going to miss having you here with us.
I really appreciate what you two have done.
I can't thank you enough for taking real good care of me.
[LAUGHS.]
Prosper, you're family.
We take care of family.
- Micah.
- What's up? [CHUCKLES.]
I want you to have this.
Gil Scott-Heron.
The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.
I think you'll like this one.
Sweet.
Thanks, Mr.
P.
You're a born leader.
Appreciate that.
Thank you.
So, why are we stoping? Oh, we what are we doing? Are we picking something up? What's this? Read it.
It's the deed to the house.
And the land.
It's yours.
How did you do this? Prosper, your place is here in St.
Jo, with us.
You belong with this land.
Your land.
Now, Charley, I can't It's done.
I already talked to Billie.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
[LAUGHS.]
I think I'll walk around a bit.
Enjoy feeling my land under my feet.
[MICAH, ON COMPUTER.]
The real cost of the prison isn't in dollars and cents.
Okay? Prisons aren't made of bricks and mortars.
They're made of bodies.
And blood.
Can't stop bringing on The only thing I care To keep this dream of mine How will I get there? Always kept it down Like a handful of sin Want to make it right Just like I can Ask myself Am I worth it? Do I think I'm worth it I lost the gain I numb the pain I feel like I'm at peace Within I feel like I'm at peace within I lost the gain I numb the pain I feel like I'm at peace Within Oh, oh When I let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in I know, I know Time is the only thing That matters I know I've learned [CLEARS THROAT.]
Hey, Deborah.
It's Nova.
It's ready.
I'm sending it right over.
Okay.
Thanks.
Thanks.
[PHONE BEEPS OFF.]
The high and the lows No, no, it's all bigger [UNCLEAR.]
I don't do it For the fame, no It's my heart that triggers I lost the gain I numb the pain I feel like I'm at peace Within I feel like I'm at peace within I lost the gain I numb the pain I feel like I'm at peace Within - When I - Oh, oh When I let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in Changes from the inside Changes from The inside - Never try to hide - Never try to hide - Your beauty lies within - Your beauty lies within - Your beauty lacks without - Your beauty lacks without Change that is from inside Change that is From inside - Never try to hide - Never try to hide - Your beauty lies within - Your beauty lies within Your beauty lacks When you don't Let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in Let the light in Light in Light in Light in Light in [RALPH ANGEL SCOFFS.]
[RALPH ANGEL.]
There they go.
What do they want now? [POLICE RADIO SQUAWKING.]
What's all this about? I got my kid in the car.
Y'all mind turning them lights down? Can I help you? Ralph Angel Bordelon.
Mind coming down to the station and answering a few questions? You mind telling me what this about? We just want to talk to you.
Now, I'm asking you nicely.
Got a warrant? Now, I heard you still got some time left on your parole.
I could put you back in for dropping a piece of gum on the ground.
Now, I wouldn't say no if I were you.
Look, I got cameras everywhere.
They seen when you came, and they seeing what's happening right now, so.
[ENGINE STARTS.]
[SIGHS.]
They let me in.
Made myself comfortable.
Hope you don't mind.
Got a call to meet with the executive board of MPTE.
Is that so? Mm-hmm.
Seems someone's stirring up trouble.
Putting my private affairs out in the open.
Hmm.
Suddenly having trouble getting your calls returned from your friends in the state legislature? Your time is up.
At Landry Enterprises and beyond.
It's time people saw you for exactly what you are.
Corrupt.
Nefarious.
Not worth the very land we walk on.
Well enjoy my little temporary setback.
You made a deal with a woman who would stab her own brother in the back and watch him bleed out.
In God's name, what do you think she's going to do to you? Hmm? The devil you know, Miss Bordelon.
The devil you know.
I appreciate the concern, Sam.
But I'm not afraid of you or your sister.
I have been a black woman for a hell of a long time.
So the devil I know, the devil I don't.
It doesn't matter.
I'll conquer them all.
Take care, Sam.
And I really mean that.
Be careful.
[VIOLET.]
Can I open them? [HOLLYWOOD.]
Just one second.
This is a surprise.
Well, it better be a good one, all this foolishness you taking me through.
We got a lot to do today.
[HOLLYWOOD.]
Just remember, everything you see when you open your eyes belongs to you.
Okay.
[HOLLYWOOD.]
Okay.
Now, open them.
I don't understand.
I thought you said you had a gift for me.
[LAUGHS.]
You did not.
Yes.
Yes, I did.
[LAUGHING.]
But how did you even know? Oh, don't worry about all that.
I heard about it and I know.
You wanted this.
And now it's all yours.
Only this time, you ain't got to share with nobody.
Not Jarrett.
Not me.
The only name on the deed to this building is yours.
All's you got to do is say yes.
Oh Hollywood, this is a lot to give somebody.
Oh, first off, my love you ain't "somebody".
And today, honey, every day in the world I deserve to give you whatever I want.
[INHALES DEEPLY.]
You went all out.
[NOVA.]
I don't think this is a celebration for the rally.
[CHARLEY.]
I don't think so either.
[HIP-HOP MUSIC PLAYING.]
[NOVA.]
I thought everyone was coming over.
Did y'all know about this? Ain't all this for the rally.
[NOVA.]
It doesn't look like Everybody's here.
Please, have a seat.
- Yeah.
- Look! I can't believe, you look beautiful, Vi.
- [LAUGHS.]
- Yeah, all right.
Amazing.
I see you clean up nice.
[SIGHS.]
We didn't want to wait that much longer.
Don't wait, we ready! Figured we'd do something small and simple, just with all y'all out here.
It's time, it's your time.
[PRIEST.]
We're here on this blessed day to celebrate these two special souls as they become one.
There's nothing that I can say that these two can't say better.
Please.
Hollingsworth Desonier I love you from a well so deep that I could dig a dozen years and not get to the mystery of you.
Our love just feels good.
But it's also a love that defies every bit of the common sense that I have spent a lifetime learning.
But here is where I want to be.
You are good kind safe and so perfectly flawed that even your jagged parts fit mine just right.
On your worst day, your spirit flies so high that it makes everything around you better.
So I commit to you.
To us.
And I have learned the difference between a love that liberates and a love that feels like it's always been free.
I choose freedom.
I choose love.
I choose you.
Hollywood? [CLEARS THROAT.]
Violet Bordelon.
You know, I ain't never tell you this, but the day I met you I was feeling real low.
