Homicide: Life on the Street s03e14 Episode Script

End Game

Manuel, Manuel, Manuel.
If I were you, I'd start talking.
I don't know where he is.
I swear to God.
Glen Holton shot three homicide detectives.
We know he was in your janitor's room at Penn Station last night.
- I don't know where he went.
- You've been around.
You're on parole.
We got a situation here.
Yeah, you gave him shelter.
You know what that makes you? An accessory.
Harbouring a fugitive is a serious crime.
We don't even have to talk to you.
- We could just arrest you.
- Come on.
You wanna go back to Jessup, huh? - I can't go back there.
- Oh? I got a family.
Let's help each other out.
How about that? We know that you're not a bad guy, Manuel.
We know that Holton was into some pretty kinky stuff, but we know that you are clean now, right? He just needed a place to crash.
I didn't even know what he'd done.
Holton is no friend of yours.
If he were, he wouldn't have come to you.
He wouldn't have gotten you in all this trouble.
Are you gonna sacrifice your family, your whole life for him? He wouldn't do that for you.
He'd turn you in in a heartbeat.
I think you know that.
If I tell you where he is, you'll let me go? If you help us bring down a cop shooter, you'll be a hero, man.
The mayor will probably want to thank you himself.
- We don't lock up heroes, do we, Frank? - No, we don't.
We don't lock up heroes.
Manuel said Holton would be at the North Avenue Motel.
Maybe we should take Albert.
Maybe we should call the hospital.
Check in again? I'm not going to call.
Well, maybe something's changed.
Well, if it's taken a turn for the worse, they'll let us know.
You mean if they die? It's not gonna happen.
How can you be so sure? Huh? Stan could die.
Kay could die.
For that matter, so could Beau.
A bullet wound, infection sets in.
He could be dead in 24 hours.
If you wanna think that way, go ahead.
I prefer to think positively.
Nobody is gonna die.
I can't do anything about it anyway, so I'm not gonna call.
I'm gonna do the only thing I can do, which is bring down the shooter.
OK, if you see him, give me a call.
Detective Tim Bayliss.
OK? Take care of yourself.
Holton checked out about an hour ago, but the clerk's so stoned.
He doesn't know how he left! He could've flown away on the wings of Icarus! What difference does it make? He's gone.
- Where do we find this pig? - He knows the police are after him.
And he's smart enough not to get caught.
But he can't control his impulses.
He'll cruise for another victim.
Fixated paedophiles have an attachment to their pornography collection.
They never destroy pictures, magazines, videos.
They'll trade them among themselves, leave them in their wills, but their collection is the most important thing they own.
We only found a couple of magazines, a few photos.
He has to have a more extensive collection somewhere else.
He's been doing this for 15 years.
Find out where it is and we find Holton.
Higby called from Holton's apartment.
They found a set of keys.
Get down there.
I don't want a screw-up.
- You got it.
- Drummond, go with him.
- What? - Drummond's going with you.
We all feel blessed to have Mitch, but I can handle this.
I know you can, but take him anyway.
These keys may lead to Holton.
- We need this break.
Come on, Munch.
- All right.
Walker Have you heard how Stan and the others are doing? Stan's got a fractured skull.
Beau was shot through the thigh and neck, but no nerve or artery damage.
Kay is still critical.
She was shot through the heart.
Is it worth questioning Holton's mother? I talked to her twice.
I don't think she knows anything.
- Let's try a third time.
- Looking for a hat trick! - You want some back-up? - Yeah, sure.
If you don't mind my driving.
Er, John, I don't want you to think I'm pushy or anything, but I've always been the driver.
Of course.
How could I have forgotten? You're the best wheel man in the department.
Stan says so.
- Well, Stan exaggerates.
- Stan is a master of understatement.
Hey, do you ever go on vacation with him? We can never work out our schedules.
The best time me and him ever had was three days in Mexico.
We just went down there because we dared each other.
We know the wives are gonna have a conniption, but there we are anchored off Acapulco on a 65-foot charter.
And then Stanley, he hooks on to this unbelievable marlin.
I mean, the size of a house! - That was a yellowtail.
- What? No.
I was there.
It was a marlin.
Stan showed me the pictures.
It was a yellowtail.
It took me us all day to haul it out of the water.
It must've been a world record.
Cosmic! We broke our asses getting it on deck.
The biggest yellowtail tops off at a buck fifty.
- This one was 500 lbs.
- So Stan didn't show me the pictures? Why would I remember Stan catching a marlin? It was a yellowtail, OK? We had a crappy time, anyway.
Yeah, we argued the whole time.
He snored.
He was rude to the waitresses.
You know, Stan can be a monumental jerk.
'He's definitely our guy.
'Police, freeze! ' - 'Ls the building locked up? - Glen Holton is at apartment 201.
' '1013! 1013! ' Here, hold this up to that hole, will you? Is this like "pin the tail" on a crime scene? I'm gonna reconstruct what happened.
When we find Holton, which we will do, we'll have enough evidence to put him away.
What are you talking about? I was here.
I know what happened.
You're an unreliable witness.
You're hysterical, biased.
- Stan was standing right there.
- That's right.
How do you know that? He took a shot to the left temporal lobe.
The bullet fractured his skull.
Head wounds, they bleed like crazy.
You see above and below on the wall, it's clean.
Blood often reacts in a given way, depending on the weapon.
Bullets spray blood faster and farther than a baseball bat.
This is where Felton went down.
How come there isn't more blood? Because his wounds had muscle and fat.
- They closed up fast.
- He's not exactly Mr Macrobiotic! Maybe him being a little tubby saved his life.
Howard, she lost the most blood.
She went down here.
And this is where Felton probably grabbed the banister.
He was probably trying to stand up to give back a little of what he got.
- That's Stanley's blood.
- Blood is blood.
Don't get emotional.
I had my gun out.
I aimed.
I didn't get a damn round off! It happens.
Don't beat yourself up.
Higby! Hey, we found Holton's keys.
This one opens up his apartment.
- Where did you find them? - Next to the dumpster.
- He jumped from his roof to this roof? - The keys fell out of his pocket.
What are the other keys on this ring? This little one is a subway locker.
We traced the number down to the Calvert Street subway.
Radio Frank Pembleton.
Tell him to meet us at the subway station now.
That's Holton's mother.
- What's she given us so far? - Nothing.
According to her, she's up for Mother of the Year! Her son's only problem is he's "misunderstood.
" Mrs Holton, we need to ask you a few more questions.
- Who's he? - Detective Lewis.
Homicide.
Huh! A good-looking police officer! You never brought nobody good-looking before! Good-looking? You need glasses, Mrs Holton! Have you heard from Glen today? I'm on my knees.
I got a scrub brush in my hand.
This is the hold I got on life.
It sucks! You suck! Glen sucks! Leave me alone unless you want to dip your elbows in muriatic acid and help me.
It's my foot, not my shoulder.
Your shoulder's all right? - It's my foot.
I can't move it.
- Any pain? - My whole leg is on fire.
- Good sign.
Pain is a good sign? You get paid a lot to tell people things like this? The tests show there's no damage to the major arteries or bone structure.
- Then why can't I move it? - Psychological pain.
Doc, this is my head.
This is my leg.
My head is all right.
Were you on vacation during anatomy classes? No, I just flunked 'em! That's why I'm your doc instead of someone else.
I'm scheduling you for therapy on your neck and shoulders starting tomorrow.
Hey! It sounds like you're gonna be dancing soon.
Any day now.
Where's Beth? She can't stand to see me, strong or weak.
I've been lying here thinking.
Not exactly one of my strong points, as you know.
But you have a tendency to see things more clearly when you think your life is gonna end.
What I know is Beth and I don't love each other any more.
We shouldn't be together.
I don't know if you're in any condition to be making major decisions.
I don't want my kids to ever hear me yelling at their mother again.
I don't want them to lay in their beds, listening to their father crying.
I pray she doesn't use custody as a weapon against me.
Russert, Stan's ex-wife's plane gets into BWI in 20 minutes.
I'll be there.
OK, I'll handle things here.
- If you want me, I'll be at the hospital.
- OK.
We might have a break in the Holton case.
Where's Gee? You just missed him.
What's up? - Keys were found at the crime scene.
- Holton's? Yeah.
One is a locker at Calvert Street subway station.
They're heading there.
I'll get hold of Walker and Lewis, and have them meet you at the Calvert subway.
- You weren't kidding! - I'm not making you nervous? No, you're not making me nervous at all.
Uh-uh.
Sex crimes.
That must really get to you most of the time, don't it? My boyfriend hates it when I bring work home, but you gotta talk about it.
No matter how depraved, you gotta get it out of your system.
Boyfriend, huh? - Well, fiancé really.
- Oh.
- What, is he a race car driver? - He's a paramedic.
When are you two jumpin' the broom? - What do you mean? - When are you getting married? We haven't set a date yet.
- How long have you been engaged? - Er What? Eight years.
- Eight years? - Yeah, eight years.
- Mitch, you got the keys? - Yeah.
Number 13.
Locker right here.
The damn thing's stuck.
Come on.
- Oh, jeez, look at that! - Holton's pornography collection.
You said it's important enough for him to come back for? - It's a good bet.
- Lock up every entrance.
I want every ticket taker, janitor and passenger to be one of our people.
Marge, I can run your suitcases by the hotel first.
- No.
I want to see Stanley.
- OK.
You got it.
- I could have gotten that door for you.
- Stan never did.
Why should you? The only time Stan opened the door for me was when he won some Church League bowling tournament, and made me hold his trophy on the ride home.
I'll give you two guesses which Stan reached for first and a big hint, it wasn't me! Once we got inside, he forgot all about the trophy.
Stan was a real athlete.
Never could get enough.
- Stan? - Oh, jeez, what am I saying? I I never talk about my You know, sex life with Stan.
In marriage counselling, I blushed every time the psychotherapist brought it up.
Oh, I forgot how cold it gets in Baltimore! I should have known to bring a warmer coat.
Silly of me to forget! I think they got some hot coffee inside.
I haven't seen Stan since the day I walked out on him.
- Do they have hot tea here? - I'm sure they do.
What's wrong? Maybe I should check in to the hotel first.
They'll have hot tea there, right? I need to know what happened.
- You wanted to see me? - Come in, Megan.
- Please.
- Thank you.
You're not gonna like this, but we want you to review Giardello.
I'm sorry, I don't follow.
Three police officers were shot during a routine lock-up.
Was Giardello negligent? Was anything omitted that should have been taken care of? You want me to investigate Giardello? You're of equal rank.
We wouldn't ask you to investigate.
We just want you to look into what happened.
Felton, Howard and Bolander went to the wrong apartment based on a clerical error.
It was not Giardello's fault.
The shootings occurred on his shift.
That makes him responsible, fault or no fault.
I'm not the right person for the job.
Lieutenant Russert, we need a full report as soon as possible.
I prefer this be assigned to someone else.
This is not a request, Megan.
Are you refusing to follow a department order? No sir.
Thank you.
Hey! Beau! - How are you doin', Bob? - I brought some people to see you.
- Daddy! - Daddy! - Be careful.
- It's OK.
Here she is.
- Beth asked me to bring the kids down.
- Thanks, Bob.
Dad, when are you gonna come home? I wanna show you how good I can throw now.
- You've been practising, huh? - Yeah.
That's great, kiddo.
My partner, Kay Howard.
Have you heard? They won't tell me anything.
Zach, why don't you take your sister to the snack machine down the hall? Get me a candy bar too.
The food in this joint is lousy.
Here we go.
Kay is She's out of surgery, but she's still in critical condition.
What does that mean? She had a bullet through her heart.
They had her in surgery for six hours.
They don't know if she will make it.
You mean she might die? Yeah.
She might die.
Hey, Meldrick, tell me about the clerical error.
They went to the wrong joint.
The numbers were transposed from the original file to the arrest warrant memo? Maybe Gee initialled the memo, but you got bits of paper coming by your desk too.
Wait, wait.
Giardello initialled the memo? Yeah, Giardello initials every memo.
What of it? He signed off on an arrest warrant with the wrong address? It sounds to me like you're trying to nail Gee's butt to the wall for this.
I was ordered by Barnfather and Granger.
There you go.
Ain't this a bitch! The big bosses hire you to do their dirty work and you take it out on Gee! - How could you do this to him? - I'm not trying to do anything to him! Meldrick, if he made a mistake, he made a mistake.
We all make mistakes.
And we always gotta find a fall guy somewhere, don't we, Lieutenant? Ever see anything so depressing as a subway station? A lot of people take the subway.
Yeah, yeah, I know, but still Still what? The subway is an efficient way of getting to work.
In New York City, I used to take the subway every day.
Airports, they're kind of exciting.
Train stations, they have a certain kind of glamour.
Bus stations have this ambience but subway stations are just dull.
- Are you too good to take the subway? - No, I'm not saying that.
What I'm saying is that if I had my choice, I'd take the bus or I'd buy a car.
Not everyone who takes the subway has no choice.
Some people enjoy it.
I look around here and the one thing I do not see is anyone enjoying anything.
- You're a snob.
- I'm not a snob.
You're the worst kind of snob because you refuse to admit you are one.
You believe you're one with the common man, but really - What? - You'd rather walk than take the subway.
- Really? - Yeah.
Well, maybe.
- What do you think of that? - Is that him? Well, maybe wearing a disguise.
You never know these days.
- She's got a key.
Where did she get it? - Holton made a copy.
- OK, let's go! - Hold it! Drop the bag! Down on your knees! Hands behind your head! - Who are you? - Alice Nance.
- How do you know Glen Holton? - I love him.
He's my boyfriend.
OK.
Get that.
Holton loves you, huh? Glen.
His name is Glen.
Yeah, he loves me.
Alice Is it all right if we call you Alice? Sure.
- Alice, do you know where Glen is? - No.
How long have you been Glen's girlfriend? We met at the Hollywood Diner where I work.
He came in all the time.
He talked to me.
He's very intelligent.
He knows about cosmology, the stars.
- Have you talked to him recently? - Yesterday.
- What did he tell you? - He said the cops were gonna kill him.
You think he shot three cops and he's dead meat.
- No one wants to kill him.
- We want to protect him.
But we can't do that unless we know where he is.
Everybody thinks he shot those cops, but he told me he didn't.
I believe him.
That's why he came to me instead of his stupid, ugly mother.
- He knows I love him more than anyone.
- You dated Glen for how long? We never actually went out or anything.
- How do you know he loves you? - I can tell.
He never said anything, but I can tell.
He needs me.
If you tell us where he is, he'll be safe.
You're gonna put him in jail.
If you love him, Alice, you'll tell us where he is.
You'll protect him.
You'll help us to take care of him.
Glen had a terrible childhood, you know.
His stepfather abused him.
His father was a carpenter.
His real father, I mean.
He died when Glen was five.
He used to take Glen down to the shipyard where they work on boats.
Glen says his favourite smells in the whole world are coffee and sawdust and cigarettes.
Cos they remind him of his dad.
What shipyard, Alice? Over by Procter and Gamble.
This is the only ship where Holton could be hiding.
It's called "The Sanctuary.
" I want a police boat down the shore here.
- Just have a brass band playin' on deck! - Excuse me? Holton shot three officers.
He must feel like he has a target on his back.
If he catches one whiff of a stakeout, he's gone again.
I want three police cars behind the main warehouse here.
Why don't you just give this to my people to avoid making the same mistake twice? QRT trains and retrains constantly.
We critique incidents like the one that led to the three detectives getting ambushed.
- It's not his area of expertise.
- Who let Holton get away? Us? - You got in the way.
- Stay out of MY way, OK? Hey, we all want to get Holton into custody without anyone getting shot.
- That's what you'll get with his plan.
- I'm not working with this guy! You don't have a choice, Frank.
And we don't have much time, so let's get to work, OK? Just do your job.
- Any sign of him yet? - No.
I sent two guys down into the ship.
They found a sleeping bag and empty soda bottles.
Are you sure he'll be back? Yeah, he's got a picture of his mother there.
You can go back down town.
- I'll call you when he shows.
- We're not going anywhere.
- Hey, Al.
- Hello, Megan.
I just got back from the hospital.
Stanley's better.
He's unconscious.
The good news is the swelling has gone down on his brain.
That is good news.
Al, we need to talk.
Barnfather and Granger have have asked me to write up a report.
They want to know why three detectives were ambushed.
You're gonna grade me on my homework? They didn't give me a choice.
You are a good soldier.
You do what you're told to do.
So far this year, I've had three officers shot down, a suicide.
This place is going to hell.
I'm doing everything I can to keep it together.
Tell me what you want to know! Did you initial the arrest warrant? Yes.
You didn't notice that the secretary had transposed the numbers on the address? No.
Al, I'm gonna need all your case folders.
The paperwork requesting the warrant for Glen Holton's arrest.
Anything that you've got.
I'll see that Naomi gets you everything you need.
Yeah.
- Hey, Beau.
How's it hangin'? - Good.
Good.
That's good.
- Meldrick! - What? - Come in.
What I have, you can't catch.
- Hey, OK.
Oh, I got you, I got you It's a giraffe.
I can see that.
Thanks for coming.
I know you're busting your ass trying to find Holton.
Yeah.
We're gonna get him too.
Soon.
- Listen, man, I gotta ask you a question.
- Shoot.
I mean, you know Anyway When Crosetti died how did you get over it? Hey, Beau, don't go there, man.
Kay ain't gonna die.
Meldrick, Kay may die.
I'm not gonna pretend that nothing bad's gonna happen cos it already has.
I gotta ask you.
What are you supposed to do if your partner dies on you? Well, you just You You just gotta keep going on, is all.
You get up and you do your job, you know.
You go to work.
You get through each day, one day at a time and then You hope that one day you'll get up and it'll hurt a little less.
You gotta You gotta just get through it.
You just gotta go on.
It's that simple.
- That's it? Keep going? - Just keep going on, man.
Meldrick, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my whole life! Now You're just spittin' on my advice? I open up my heart, and you go and spit on my advice? - Basically, yeah.
- Give me back the giraffe.
You don't want my advice, so give me my giraffe! OK, he's just come home.
Right there, going up the gangplank.
That's Glen Holton.
The suspect is on the ship.
All units mobilise.
We found his nest.
He's in the engine room.
Mitch, below you! Freeze! Freeze! I found him! He's heading towards the stern! Hold it! Get down! Get down! Glen Holton, I'm arresting you for the murder of William Borkin, and attempted murder of three police officers.
This is it? Your full report? Yes, sir.
It's all there.
Al was extremely forthcoming.
And? This was a routine arrest of a suspect who never demonstrated any proclivity for use of firearms.
Our people had adequate back-up.
They were wearing vests.
The assistant who typed the warrant transposed the apartment number.
Why didn't Al catch the transposition? Well, Al is a busy man and sometimes Megan, did Al initial the orders to arrest? - No.
- No? - No.
- Excuse me, Captain Barnfather.
If you want me to answer any questions, ask them directly.
It's all right, Al.
We're just about done.
I review and initial all warrants.
I initialled the warrant for Glen Holton.
That's not what Megan told me.
Do you want to explain? If you had allocated funds for a new computer system, it might have slowed down the paperwork we have to deal with.
As a result of those piles, we sometimes have detectives out making arrests before we can initial the warrant.
It was Granger's idea to save money by not buying the new computer system.
I'll remind him of that.
Al Megan.
Captain.
I should have caught that mistake.
Bull! No.
You shouldn't have lied, but thanks.
Lying to those guys? They're only getting what they give! Hey, Gee! We got the shooter.
Are you gonna bash me around some more? Where's my lawyer? Do you need a lawyer? What are you guilty of? I don't have to be guilty of anything.
I know the routine.
Are you gonna stand behind me? My partner makes you nervous? Why are you nervous? You didn't do anything.
You think I did! What I think and why you're nervous are two separate items.
- I heard about the kid who was killed.
- That makes you nervous? - I had nothing to do with it.
- Who says you did? Then why am I here? You're here because you shot three police officers.
I didn't shoot anybody.
I don't even have a gun.
I don't like guns.
- I don't like people standing behind me! - Why? It, er reminds you? I don't like it.
All right? Anyone who's been up at Jessup, they know about people standing behind them.
It's a special instinct they develop, huh? I didn't do anything to that kid and I didn't shoot any cops.
Well, you're going down for one or the other.
Take your pick.
You see, the cops, they're still alive.
But the kid The kid, he's dead.
- So it's your choice.
- I didn't do anything.
If you're innocent, then why did you run? - I was scared.
- About the cops, right? Because you knew that if you got caught, you'd have your ass kicked in here! Well, you're here now.
Huh? You're here.
With me and Frank.
Nothing wrong is happening in here.
You know, if it were me, I'd cop to shooting the three detectives.
Up in Jessup I might be given more space, more respect.
- And if I killed the kid - Right I'd demand to be put in isolation.
I'd want to have protection.
Who would you trust? Who would be in protective isolation with you? I'd have special guards with me.
They'd be the last guys that I'd trust.
Yeah, because they've got family.
Anyone with kids, I don't want them guarding me.
I see your point because mistakes happen all the time.
Yeah, someone looks away for a second.
A guard leaves a security door unlocked.
- Real wrong things just happen.
- Yeah.
How about you two don't think out loud any more? Detective Felton? He just had some tests.
He's a little groggy.
I'm Kay Howard's father.
Oh, hi.
I'm sorry about Kay.
How's she doing? She's stable.
She's maintained a steady body temperature for the last eight hours, but she hasn't woken up yet.
I'm sorry.
For what happened to Kay.
- You didn't pull the trigger.
- I know.
I opened the door for her.
I put her in first.
Chivalry.
- It got her shot.
- Have you seen her? No.
I can't.
I tried a couple of times.
I I just can't.
It's my fault she's in there.
If you hadn't opened that door for Kay, she would have opened it herself.
We got him on the killing of the Borkin kid.
Let's just charge him.
- We send him up on murder? - Exactly.
- We convict, he goes up for life.
- Let's do it.
- On your feet! - Hold it.
Hold it.
What? - You didn't mean to shoot those cops.
- No, you were just scared.
- Yeah, I was scared.
- Tell us what happened.
I come out of my apartment, one cop calls for me to stop.
- Which cop? - I don't know.
The first one? I run up to the roof and they come after me.
I heard about the kid and I knew they'd be pissed.
- What happened? - I get to the roof, I'm cornered.
- They had their guns out.
- On the roof? - You're not on the roof.
- I'm on the roof.
No, no, you're still in the hallway, Glen.
I'll show you right where I was, right beside the drainpipe.
They had their guns.
They had this look in their eyes.
You pulled out a gun? What kind of gun? - A gun you get on the street.
- One gun? - Yeah, one gun.
- You shoot the three detectives.
Bang, bang, bang! Is that what you did? It happened so fast, I don't know.
Then I head back downstairs.
- I shot these cops.
- You're lying! You killed the Borkin kid! We found his belt in your closet.
You're going to jail! - I did.
- You didn't shoot anybody.
- I killed the Borkin kid.
- End of story.
- He's not the one.
- What? Holton didn't shoot Bolander, Howard and Felton.
If he didn't do it, then who did? I want to know! I don't know, Gee.
How can you sleep? How can you sleep through this? Hi, Felton.
What are your thoughts As you turn to dream? I wouldn't know I never look These things are hard These things can hurt All of the secrets Nobody needs to know How does it feel Falling asleep so hard? How could I ask? How could I say The things I need to? You'd go away How are you doing, Kay?
