Mission Impossible (1966) s03e18 Episode Script

Live Bait

Good morning, Mr.
Phelps.
The man you're looking at is Orin Selby.
One of our agents who has managed to become a high-ranking member of the enemy's intelligence service.
But this man, Helmut Kellerman, the enemy's chief of Internal Security has begun to suspect Selby.
Then recently, Kellerman captured a courier, code-named Marceau, who knows that Selby is an American agent.
Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to protect Selby and put an end to the threat posed by Kellerman.
As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.
This tape will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
Our latest report from Selby says that Marceau hasn't cracked yet.
But he's under interrogation around the clock.
It won't be long.
Is Selby positive that Marceau can expose him? Yes.
You see, Marceau was the American agent who arranged for Selby's escape from America.
Now, although they were using code names, if Kellerman can crack Marceau, he can piece it all together.
Jim, since we don't know where Kellerman is keeping Marceau, wouldn't it be better to take Selby safely out of the country? Now, it may come to that, Cinnamon.
But I still think there's a chance that we can rescue Marceau and preserve Selby's cover if we can strike Kellerman's one weak link.
Brocke.
Brocke.
Well, he's the young military aide Kellerman's planted in Selby's apparatus, huh? - Right.
- Jim, is Selby expecting me? Yes.
Yes, he is.
- You got the lighter, Barney? - Right here, Jim.
All you do is push this to activate the gas.
It will knock them out for about 15 minutes, Rollin.
These capsules will give us immunity to the gas.
This will revive Brocke when we're ready for him.
Now, let's see the pictures, Barney.
The split-screen was no problem.
You see Kellerman and Rollin.
I've never even met the man.
Good.
That's fine, Barney.
And I've got the liquid nitrogen ready.
Just in case.
And then, Brocke? Well, I told Colonel Kellerman that you wanted the American agent Marceau.
That he was out of his jurisdiction.
But he refused to hand him over to you.
I see.
Yes? Yes, send him up.
Well, I'm afraid he's left me no alternative, Brocke.
What do you mean? I mean, I've called OGU Central in on the matter.
They have sent an investigator.
Yes, well, I suppose that was the only thing left to do.
If you will excuse me.
I have more important matters to attend to.
Of course, Brocke.
- He has called in OGU Central.
- I know, I heard.
- But an investigation - Be calm, Brocke.
He's only trying to regain initiative in a game he's already lost.
It's a rather clever idea, but he's finished.
You know, in a way, you can't help but admire him.
Come in.
Eric Komi.
Intelligence officer, OGU Central.
Please sit down.
Thank you.
Let us get right to the point, shall we? I read the report to OGU in which you claim that Colonel Kellerman has, without authorization, taken an American prisoner from your custody, correct? Yes.
But it's not just a claim.
- He's done it.
- How? By placing one of his men in my apparatus.
- Who? - Lieutenant Brocke.
My military aide.
- He knows.
- Of course, he's known all along.
How? And why do you think he has done all of this? Because he's a double agent.
A traitor.
I believe it's time for my entrance before they go too far.
Colonel Kellerman is afraid that I will expose him if I interrogate and break the American agent.
I see.
And you have proof for all of this? Well, no, but I think his actions confirm my suspicions.
Come in.
Good morning, Selby.
Kellerman, somehow I knew you'd be coming in about now.
Really? You must be a mind reader.
And this is? - You don't know? - No, I don't.
Eric Komi.
OGU Central.
Intelligence.
- Social visit? - No, business.
Yes.
Selby here has made a rather serious charge.
He has accused you of having taken an American agent away from him without authorization.
- That is correct.
- And you had no right.
Interrogating foreign agents is not your department.
It's mine.
You are concerned only with Internal Security.
And that is precisely the reason I took the American agent away.
- Because of Internal Security.
- Explain.
I'll be happy to.
But not here.
If you would come to my office? There's been far too much underhandedness going on.
Let's have it out in the open.
Right now.
I would suggest privacy.
Yes, yes.
But not in your office.
In my hotel room at the Hotel Wilhelm in exactly one hour.
I demand that Agent Marceau be handed over to me.
Not until there is a thorough investigation.
I shall be in contact.
Good day.
Put through an immediate voice scramble on OGU Central.
Department D.
Hello? Yes.
This is B.
I.
D.
Nine-o-nine calling.
I want a check on Eric Komi.
I requested an interagency investigation.
I believe Selby is doing it for us.
Yes, I would like to know if Eric Komi is the authorized agent that you sent in answer to my request.
He is? No, nothing more.
All right, let's start from the beginning.
What is your code name? Oh, come on, come on, we've been through this before.
You've already told me.
You remember telling me, don't you? Good.
You remember.
Tell me.
What is your code name? Marceau.
That's right.
And your job, Marceau.
What was your job? Coordinating escape plans.
Yes, that's right.
You did that job very well.
You arranged many of them, didn't you? Well, I am interested in one in particular.
About five years ago, a man escaped from America.
He boarded a freighter.
You remember? Do you remember the code name of that operation? - Eagle.
- Eagle.
That's right.
Eagle.
But do you remember the real name of the agent who escaped? Yes, you do.
Tell me.
Tell me his name.
Come on.
You remember, don't you? Well, tell me his name.
That's it, tell me! Tell me his name.
Come on, tell me! OGU has investigated Selby's escape and we have found nothing that would warrant suspicion.
I believe Marceau planned it.
Look at his dossier.
He must be the one.
Well You understand, of course, colonel, that Selby has a number of friends on the Central Committee.
You could be putting yourself in a very untenable position.
He is a double agent.
I know it.
I can prove it once I break Marceau.
- How long will that be? - Soon.
- Twenty-four hours? - Well I might need longer than that.
And I don't think I can stall Selby's request for Marceau beyond 24 hours.
But what if I can't break the man in that time? Then you will have to hand Marceau back to Selby.
But he will kill him.
Or allow the Americans to come and get him.
If what you say about Selby is true, then the Americans may be on their way now and will take him from you.
No, no, no.
They could never get into Where I'm holding Marceau unless - Unless - Unless what? Unless we allowed them to get in by setting a trap.
Yes, but there's no way of guaranteeing that the Americans can be manipulated.
I know.
We could feed them information, false information as to where Marceau is hidden.
They are not stupid.
- It would have to look legitimate.
- But of course.
But they would have to force one of our people to tell them.
Somebody Somebody vulnerable.
Brocke.
The agent you placed in Selby's apparatus? Yes, yes, yes.
If I were the Americans, I would strike directly at Brocke.
- He's vulnerable.
- Why? He's in love, a young woman named Stephanie.
An actress.
If the Americans have her, they have Brocke.
Then we feed Brocke what we want them to know.
Wouldn't it be better to tell him what we plan to do? No.
If he knew that, he would never play the game.
What if he finds out what we're doing? If it came to that, we would have to take him out.
He's, after all, an expendable pawn.
Now, all you have to do is tell Selby that Brocke knows where I am hiding Marceau.
He'll bring the Americans in.
We might catch a big one, huh? Very well, colonel.
But, for our sakes, you had better be right.
I am.
Don't move, Rollin.
Did you get it? Yes.
It's gonna make kind of a nice little feature.
I'll edit the film, then I'll give you your dialogue, Jim.
Now, the screen is split by this cord.
I'll mark your position on the couch and I'll mark the position of the chair.
- Did I stay on my side of the cord? - Perfect, Rollin.
- Colonel Kellerman.
- Albert.
How did it go with Eric Komi? He believes me, Albert.
He believes Selby is a double agent.
Very good.
Those are the plans for the Security Building.
They indicate the entrances and the only access to Marceau's cell.
I want you to have them.
- Well, take them.
- Why? I want you to plant them in Selby's office just before we move in on him.
That could be very dangerous.
I don't see why we have to go that far.
It will help our case.
Albert, there are no ethics in our business.
Especially when you're dealing with a double agent.
I will tell you when to plant them.
This is where you stand, Jim.
After all, he is an expendable pawn.
All right.
If you don't get Selby this time, you're finished.
I thought I heard something.
You better go.
I'll check on the girl.
That's it, Jim.
- Yes? - Brocke just arrived.
I'll be there in five minutes.
Any of Kellerman's people following him? Yes.
All right, you know what to do.
No, Albert.
I'm not going away.
I've got an audition tomorrow and it's important.
Please, please, Stephanie, just for a few days until this matter with Selby is settled.
I promise you when it is over, everything will be better.
You keep saying that.
I think you're just using me, Albert.
No, no, no, this time it will be better.
It will be different.
Kellerman has promised me I will be rewarded.
That will mean a promotion.
He also said that he could arrange for that appointment you wanted with the minister of communications.
Did he? When? When you get back, of course.
Albert, forgive me for being so angry with you.
But it's just that I can't bear to be away from you for even a few days.
I know.
I have to pack if you want me to leave this afternoon.
Yes, of course.
- What do you want? - OGU, you're wanted for interrogation.
There must be some mistake.
I'm a friend of Albert Brocke's.
We know that.
Please get your coat and come with me.
I'm terribly sorry.
Oh, my leg.
Is it broken? I don't know.
Let me try to walk on it.
We'll get you to a doctor.
It was no accident.
It was a meeting.
You see? How can you be sure? Bicycle identification tag.
It was purchased this morning.
Here is a duplicate copy of the receipt.
It was bought by a Miss Helga Majek.
We checked.
There is no such person.
Also, shortly before the accident, Stephanie went off with this man.
It would seem that Selby has contacted the Americans and that they have taken the bait.
Yes.
The plan is working perfectly.
They will be putting the squeeze on Brocke next.
- How's Stephanie? - Sleeping.
- How long will it take? - Two hours.
You can bring her around then.
Yes, sir.
She's leaving a parcel.
Yes, sir.
We found nothing.
Nothing.
- Did you check the decoration? - No, sir.
It is magnetic tape.
Have a reproduction made immediately.
Then put the box back together.
I want a man put on whoever picks this up.
Yes, sir.
- No arrest until I order it.
- Yes, sir.
We have found that the man in the photograph is Dirk Moss.
Supposedly, a Canadian businessman.
But I believe he's the big one we're after.
What makes you think so? This decoration on the parcel he picked up? Magnetic tape.
I've had a reproduction made.
Listen.
Acting upon your instructions, we have picked up the girl and Brocke.
At first, Brocke was reluctant to cooperate, but finally agreed to.
He has gotten us the blueprints of the State Security Building showing the location of Marceau's cell and access to it.
We will await further instructions.
Just as you predicted.
The blueprints are inaccurate, of course.
When they follow them, they walk right into a trap.
All we have to do is wait.
The drug's wearing off.
I would strike directly at Brocke.
He is vulnerable.
Yes, now that we have the girl, we can force him to do anything.
But we still have to be careful.
If Brocke ever suspected anything, he could still warn Selby.
If it came to that, we could take him out.
He is, after all, an expendable pawn.
All right.
But if you don't get Selby this time, you're finished.
I thought I heard something.
You better go, I'll check on the girl.
And how is the interrogation coming along? Very well.
I think Marceau will crack completely at the next session.
That is why I called.
I want you to plant the blueprints in Selby's office this afternoon.
Very good.
- Lieutenant Brocke speaking.
- Albert, it's me, Stephanie.
I'm very busy now.
I will have to call you back later.
Oh, don't hang up.
Oh, Albert, I'm so frightened.
Now, listen to me.
I just escaped, I was kidnapped.
I see.
Did you know any of them, Mr.
Vogel? - Is there someone there with you? - Yes.
- Kellerman? - Correct.
Well, he was one of them.
What? I didn't know the others but Kellerman was there.
I saw him.
He was talking to a tall man.
An American.
- Are you positive, Mr.
Vogel? - Yes.
What was said? I only caught a little of it.
Something about your warning Selby.
And then Kellerman said that you were only a pawn.
That you were vulnerable and expendable.
I see.
He said that now that they had me, they could get you to do whatever they wanted.
What's going on, Albert? What does it mean? Nothing.
I will meet you in an hour.
The usual place.
All right? All right.
I'll be waiting.
What was that all about? - Anything the matter? - No, no, nothing important.
Good.
Don't forget what I told you about the blueprints.
No, no, I won't.
And now Kellerman won't be able to hear? Listen to me, Selby, I have something very important to tell you.
Go ahead.
I have found out that Kellerman is the real double agent.
He intends to destroy us both to protect his cover.
How'd you find all this out? From Stephanie.
What are we going to do? Do? Nothing.
- But I don't understand.
- I don't trust you, Brocke.
First, you sell me out, now supposedly you're selling Kellerman out.
How do I know this isn't another one of Kellerman's traps? But it's the truth.
Stephanie will swear to it.
She will testify.
- Would she? - Yes, yes, of course she would.
You must believe me.
I'm telling the truth.
Oh, you've lied so much.
You're like the little boy who cried wolf.
I could never run the risk of believing you.
Listen, he gave me these blueprints of the State Security Building.
They include the precise location of Marceau's cell.
I was supposed to plant them here in your office.
Along with everything else you planted.
You must listen.
He's going to destroy you.
I'm sure he will, with your help.
Can't you see? I'm in this as deep as you are now.
He's going to have to kill me so there won't be any leaks.
Then my advice is for you to take your little Stephanie and try to outrun his bullets.
Now, get out.
The blueprints Brocke gave the Americans show that Marceau is being held down there.
That is where I will spring the trap.
Actually, Marceau is a bit harder to find.
He is in a special security section I designed myself.
Doctor.
- I have been using sodium dianocil.
- I prefer thiopental.
Marceau should have gotten the drug by now.
Jim, how long do we have until it wears off? Well, it will continue to fight Kellerman's drug for about an hour.
We should have gotten him out of the building by that time.
Again.
Have you ever heard of an agent by the name of Dirk Moss? It's useless.
Tell me, why do you have him chained like that? An added precaution.
The chain completes an electrical circuit to a detonator.
If by any chance the Americans got in and tried to free Marceau, they would find him a human booby trap.
Any attempt to saw, burn or tamper with the chain automatically sets off an antipersonnel mine.
Marceau goes and anybody else in the cell with him goes.
- Hotel Wilhelm.
- Yes, this is Eric Komi.
I had called earlier, I'd given orders that I would be dining in my room tonight.
Yes, we have that order, sir.
Well, I would like to change it.
Instead of the salmon, I would like chateaubriand with bordelaise sauce for two.
Yes, sir.
Certainly.
They're holding Marceau in the basement area and Kellerman's got him booby-trapped.
- You were right, Jim.
- Get the liquid nitrogen ready, Barney.
- Well, did Marceau break? - No.
Strange, he's more resistant than ever.
Stranger than that is a report I've just received.
Brocke is running for the border.
The girl is with him.
- He must have found out somehow.
- Maybe, we'll know soon enough.
I've given orders to have them picked up.
They will be here shortly.
- Colonel Kellerman, yes? - They are leaving.
Very good.
They are coming.
Put the building on stage two alert.
But why? Why did you do it, Brocke, why did you run? Quite simple.
I didn't want to get killed.
- By who? - By him! - But you are in no danger.
- You set me up.
You couldn't afford to let me live.
He is a double agent and a traitor.
I would not call other people traitors, Brocke.
You are in serious trouble.
Lying will not help you now.
I am not lying.
He is a double agent.
But he very cleverly led everyone to believe it was Selby.
He used us all as pawns in order to help try and destroy Selby.
I do not know what you hope to accomplish by all these lies.
I can prove it is the truth.
Tell them what you saw, what you heard.
Just a moment, before you implicate this young lady, perhaps she can tell us why she had a forged passport and this currency sewed into the lining of her coat.
I did not put them there.
They must have been planted.
I didn't do it.
- I didn't, I swear.
- Perhaps.
But I'm sure many innocent people have been executed because they let their emotions run away with their reason.
- Tell him, don't let him frighten you.
- I'm not frightening her.
If you tell me the truth, you have nothing to fear.
If you are lying, you have a great deal to fear.
All right, Stephanie, don't be frightened.
Tell us.
- I, I - Please, Stephanie, tell them.
Go on.
Tell us.
Albert is the traitor.
He wanted me to lie if we got caught.
And he forced you to flee with him? Yes, yes.
Thank you, Stephanie.
You have done your duty.
I know how difficult it must have been for you, being so fond of Albert.
May I go now? Yes, yes, but first you must sign a confession.
Which I will draw up.
Come.
Take her to detention room, please.
Hold him here.
I will continue the interrogation when I return.
I made a mistake with you, Albert.
Well Mistakes can be erased.
He should be coming around in a minute.
How long? Lt'll need three minutes to freeze down to minus 209 degrees.
That will give us five minutes until the guards wake up.
Let's get Kellerman.
Hold still.
Don't move.
- Who are you? - Friends.
Any tampering with that bomb and it will detonate.
Don't worry.
This is liquid nitrogen.
Close to absolute zero.
The moving parts in the triggering mechanism will freeze solid.
This is for Brocke.
Get ready.
Now, the detonator.
Let's go.
All right, give us about 30 seconds before you start to bring Brocke around.
What happened? - Nerve gas, someone - Where's Kellerman? I saw him leaving just before I blacked out.
Where's Marceau? The Americans have got Marceau.
And he arranged it.
Yes, I was wrong.
I should have known.
Now we must accept the consequences.
No, no, no.
There is an alternative.
- What? - Kellerman is, after all, a traitor.
You settle the score with Kellerman.
I will go and reinstate you with Selby.
- Selby will never take me back now.
- Yes, he will.
And I can assure you he will never mention it.
You, in turn, must never mention this affair.
- Correct, Albert? - Of course, Eric.
Brocke.
Marceau has escaped.
Wait.
