All I'm seeing is, like,
late model everywhere.
We just got here. Relax.
I think this trade
could be huge for the shop.
My buddy Mark owns this salvage yard,
and we've been talking about swapping
about 50 grand worth of trade value
for our '57 Chevy Wagon.
I'm seein' lots of stuff,
but nothing worth what's on the trailer.
This guy has got a ton of stuff.
Don't worry about it.
But ever since we got here,
Old Mr. Worry Pants
has been acting all funny.
-Shawn, how you doing, buddy?
-Hey, Mark. Hey!
-What's going on? This is Mark.
-Glad you're here.
I don't know about you,
but every salvage yard I've pulled up to
always has gems in the front.
You know what I see?
A bunch of late-model turds.
[Shawn] That's it. You got it.
We went way overboard on this.
Check out this, Mark.

All right, can we take it
one step at a time?
Let's just get Mark
to fall in love with the '57 first.
Then we worry what's behind the fence.

[Shawn] He even keeps the good stuff
behind the gate. I like that.
[Mark] Well, let's show us the good stuff.
It's pretty obvious my buddy Mark
is in love with this '57 Wagon.
Let's go this way.
I see Detroit iron over here.
Oh, yeah.
Now it's time to see if this Mark
likes the cars he's got to trade.
[upbeat music playing]
That's a Smokey and the Bandit car.

Now, this is pretty cool.
That's a Studebaker truck, dude.
I'm not gonna lie, man,
when we first pulled up,
I was really seriously doubting Mark,
but, you know, I'm man enough to admit
when I'm wrong, and I was wrong.
Wait a minute. Wait a minute.

You realize there's two cameras
standing right there
that just recorded all of this.
-Oh, yeah. Good point. Good point.

A '69 Camaro.
That's easily worth 15 grand of value.

[Mark] Looks like somebody
took the interior and left the rest.
That's really nice.
[Shawn off-screen] A '62 Caddy?
That thing is pristine.

[Shawn] I had a hunch

-That's a Bonneville Salt Flat car.
-[Shawn] Uh

It was built in '96.
It's been ran on El Mirage,
has a land speed record.
-Wow.
-[Shawn] Oh, no.

-[Mark] Yeah.
[Shawn] Ah, it never fails.
We're in the candy store, treats aplenty,
and you got to gravitate
towards the box of Goobers.
-[Mark] What's it got for a power plant?
-Has a Aurora V8 in it. Indy motor.
-[Shawn] What are we gonna do with it?
-Are you kidding?
This thing is certified, dude.
It's got the sticker on it and everything.
It's got an Aurora Indy car motor in it.
Only the factory
gave those to IndyCar racers.
I don't even know how he got
his hands on it to put it in this car,
but I'm telling you,
that's 25 grand
sitting there all by itself.
Goobers.
Half my customers can't fit in here.
-You realize that?
-Get new customers.

This car already goes 250 miles an hour.
My imagination

wanted to finish building it.

We got a lot of labor
and parts in that wagon.

what I was really expecting.
[Shawn] Wait a minute,
you weren't expecting this?
[Mark] It's a 200 mile an hour car
with an Aurora 3 liter,
over 500 horsepower, Indy car motor.
-[Caveman] I ain't questioning. It's cool.
-Why don't you jump right in?
Hell, yeah.
-[Tony] So we got this and that?
-[Mark] Yep.
-[Shawn] And cash.
-[Tony] And cash?
-[Constance] Okay.
-Fourteen-five in cash.
[Tony chuckles] No way.
Let's get the Cadillac
down off the tow truck, in a parking spot.
Get this thing inside,
and then I'll tell you all about it.
[Caveman] It's like a closet
with the doorknob inside.
[Caveman laughs]
[rattling]
-[door thudding]

-[Mark] Good night.

[Caveman grunts]
-Is it a little claustrophobic?

[all chuckling]
This deal was kind of a risk,
but I feel like
it kinda worked out, right?
We got this giant pencil
that's kind of cool-looking.
I don't get it at all. I feel like
you guys are really excited about it,
and I'm not a boy, and I don't get it.
It kind of looks like a Wienermobile.
[blues music playing]
[Caveman sighs softly]
To the moon!
[Mark] All right, so
[Shawn] So, you wouldn't tell me
in the truck on the way over here.
What's your plans for this thing?
What I wanna do
is take this land speed car
and turn it into a rocket car.
Oh, yeah.
We're gonna make this
the coolest cartoon car we've ever done.
-Oh, hell yeah.
-What?
Dude, it's simple,
we put a rocket on this thing,
we're gonna get 50,
60 grand for it, no problem.
[Mark off-screen] I understand
why Shawn is shocked.
Every time we come up with crazy ideas
around here, Shawn is shocked.
That's just Shawn.
Who's gonna buy something like this?
A guy who's got so much money
he doesn't know what to do with it,
so that's why he'll buy it.
-[Mark] Caveman gets it.
-That's 'cause Caveman watches cartoons.
[all chuckling]
I remember growing up
watching cartoons of a rocket car
[tires squeal]
and that image,
it's branded in my memory.
We've been building
cartoon cars here for years.
That's how Gotham Garage got its start,
by making a true-to-life version
of the Speed Racer Mach 5.
So finding a collector that wants
a cartoon rocket car built by this shop?
I don't see what the problem is.
-Didn't you ever want a rocket car?
-Well, I mean, sure, as a kid.
If you had the money,
wouldn't you buy one?
I guess when you put it like that
[chuckles]
[exciting techno music playing]
[Mark] First thing's first,
we need to build a rocket.
So Tony's gonna fab up
a massive aluminum tube
that we can strap
to the top of the land speed car.
We'll hook up a propane tank
and run the fuel lines through the rocket,
add an igniter
to set it off while we're driving,
and, boom, liftoff.
To finish it up, we'll wrap it in vinyl.
We'll slap on some brand-new racing tires
and complete the makeover
with a bunch of Gotham Garage touches.
Caveman, you and Constance
grab that Cadillac.
I'll meet you over at Gotham Garage
and line you out on that,
and you are gonna go
find a buyer for my rocket car.
Are you sure we can't just, uh,
strap Caveman to the back of this
and give him a burrito?
[all laughing]
[Mark] Nah.
[exciting rock music playing]
-[clanks]
-[Caveman grunts] Boat!
[Mark chuckles] That's good enough.
[Caveman] What are we doin'
with this grandma's car?
I mean, I don't think
we're putting a jet engine on it.
-[Caveman] How do you know?
-She gets to be correct on that one.
[laughs]
This, my friends,
is the old-school Gotham Garage,
-do what we do best, flip car.
-[Caveman grunts]
We're just gonna Gotham Garage it out,
and sell it and make some money.
-Love it.
-[Mark] Even Shawn can do that.
It's gonna be
the easiest thing he's ever sold.
I get it. The idea of a rocket car
kind of freaks some people out,
but that was the point
of also getting this '62 Cadillac.
This is the type of car
that we can knock out quickly
and double our money on,
which will absorb
just that little bit of risk
that comes with doing a rocket car.
To turn a big profit on this car,
we're gonna do
four very strategic modifications.
First, we'll give it the Caveman special:
cut the roof off, now the car is topless.
Next, we'll lower the car
and give it some badass wheels and tires.
Third, we'll give it
a fully custom interior,
complete with a super-kitschy fuzzy dash.
And last, I'm gonna give it
a cheetah print-infused flame paint job
that screams "Gotham Garage."
That's how you take
a Cadillac worth 12 grand
and make it worth 25 grand.
You're gonna cut this straight,
right on the line.
-Oh, we're cuttin' the roof? I like that.
-All right, control the excitement.
No, "Whoo!"
I like, "Whoo!"
We're not doing, "Whoo!"
-We're doing this straight.
-Straight?
[Mark] Straight.
A '62 Cadillac as is,
you're only gonna get
about 10 to 15 grand for it.
But if you modify it
like we're about to do,
it makes it more appealing
to a younger, hipper hot rod enthusiast.
Oh, and I want everything
that leaves this car
to stay in mint condition.
No jumping on the roof.
No throwing the glass across the room.
Everything on this car
is too good to let it go to waste.
Are you sure
you don't wanna write these down?
Uh, well, that's what you're for.
You're supposed to remember these rules.
-You're young. You remember.
-[Mark] I will see you kids later.
I'm gonna go help Tony with a rocket car.
-[Caveman whistles, laughs]
-He didn't even leave pizza money.
[slow dramatic rock music playing]
-[Caveman] All right. Now the fun part.
-On the line.
[whirring]
[Constance] This Cadillac
looks pretty cool,
but the '62, that's not
the most desirable for Cadillacs.
It's more like '50s or even like '70s.
With these '60s Cadillacs,
they had all these elements
with fins and headlights and grills
that kind of were these mismatched pieces
that didn't quite go together yet,
and it just wasn't
refined enough to be desirable.
They're still really cool,
but what we're gonna do,
is gonna make it really, really desirable.
-So we're gonna make it sexy?
-Yeah.
-[Caveman yells]
-You okay? Whoo!
Don't jump on it!
-That's why you were left here.
-Yep.
Cut it, strip it, paint it, get paid.
I like the last part.
Look at that, Caveman.
Now you can cruise,
and your hair will blow in the wind.
Step two, we need to lower this thing.
So let's clean up this mess and get ready
to drop this car to the ground.
Yeah. Let's go.
Top's off.
-[slow dramatic music playing]
-[wind whistling]
-[Mark] Rocket it up, Goose.
-[Tony chuckles]
There you go.
That's what a rocket car looks like.
-Let's talk about what the idea is here.
-Something that looks like ridonculous.
And we wanna shoot as much fire
out the back of this thing as we can.
Yeah. Think propane.
Flame. Barbecue the neighborhood.
[Mark chuckles]
[off-screen] To build a rocket car,
there's one very important thing you need.
And that's a big-ass rocket.
So we'll come up with a design,
and we'll build that rocket from scratch.
Look at you with all the rockets.
You got different kinds.
Red, white, and blue rockets.
Bottle rockets. Pocket rockets.
[chuckles] Yeah, every kind of rocket.
[hisses]
But the big thing is,
we wanna be able to trigger the flame
from inside the car while we're driving.
[Tony] Some rocket car stuff right here.
[Mark] We're gonna need
a lot of fire extinguishers.
This is not your typical
custom car kind of deal.
There's a lot of physics
and there's a whole lot
of engineering going on
to make this whole rocket engine
work on top of this car.
People are gonna freak out
when they see it roll up on a trailer.
We're definitely gonna turn some heads.
Some guy'll go, "I gotta have that."
[Tony] I mean, what's more fun
than throwing fire as far as you can?
[both chuckling]
[Mark] So a true rocket car
is basically a jet car,
powered by a turbine jet engine
out of an airplane.
Those are millions of dollars
just to build them.
One of them just broke the sound barrier.
[Tony] Now that should blast
for a couple of minutes.
-Just enough to make it look cool.
-Trying to go to Mars, not the Moon.
[chuckles]
[crackling]
[Mark] What we're doing here
is giving a land speed car
the same look and feel
as driving in a jet car.
But that price tag
is only gonna be 60 grand.
Between the cost of labor
to build a rocket,
plus the cost of material and parts,
that's a hell of a deal if you ask me.
[upbeat techno music playing]
[music fades]
That's a tight fit.
All right. There you go.
-I like it.
-That's our rocket.
Next up, we mount it to the car,
we run all the gas lines,
and then bada-bing bada-boom,
we're off to the moon.
[both chuckling]
[Shawn] Brian, hear me out.
What if I could put you in a certified
record-holding land speed car
that could go over 250 miles an hour.
You're kidding me.
I wouldn't kid you
about something like that.
Okay, picture that car with a rocket
strapped to the top of it, huh?
-[laughs] Yeah.
-Exactly. Yeah.
I think it'd be
a perfect car for your collection.
Absolutely. Here's the problem,
you're hitting me at the wrong time.
I just took a serious hit
on some investments.
I cannot afford
to roll the dice on a car like that.
Whenever you go over the top like this,
you need to find the perfect buyer.
Literally, I just bought three cars,
and I have no more room in my garage.
[Shawn off-screen] You need to find
the right guy at the right time
that's willing to pay the right price.
Fifty, 60 grand, you make that
before breakfast. Am I right?
I think 50, 60 grand's a lot for a toy.
[off-screen] I'm definitely getting
just a little worried here.
Especially since I have
two other very unique vehicles
that I'm responsible for selling.
The more time I spend on this,
the less time I can dedicate
to the concept vehicles.
How the heck am I gonna find
somebody to buy this thing?
[mellow rock music playing]
[music fades]
-I feel like a real rocket scientist.
-[Mark] Do you?
-I do, yeah.
-So you're like a fake rocket scientist?
A cartoon rocket scientist.
[both chuckle]
We've done cars
with flame elements in the past
[Caveman laughing] Yeah!
but nothing on this scale.
If we could do this
-We could do anything.

[Mark laughs]
Now the challenge
is to get this giant rocket tube
to shoot out a massive flame.
[crackling]
So we need to create a system
where we can control our gas lines
and our igniter
from switches inside the cockpit.
We have to run that
through the car to the rocket,
so when we turn it all on,
we're shooting fire
out of the back of this thing.
Hey, Mark, it's a rocket strap.
It's gonna look like
the rocket is just strapped onto the car.
And in order to impress a buyer,
we need a giant, massive flame.
[Mark] Wanna grab one end?
[Tony] So this could take
a little bit of trial and error.
[Mark] Nice job.
[Tony] And hopefully,
it's more trial and less error
because when you're dealing
with a 5-foot flame,
you really don't want an error.
-All right, you ready to do this?
-Yeah.
-We're in.
-Crack that thing.
[suspenseful music playing]
-Valve's open.
-All right.
[gas hissing]
-[music slows, distorts]
-[Mark] Uh
[gas hissing softly]
That's cute.
Yeah, the flame should actually
go straight out and not up.
The whole idea
of a rocket car is a giant flame.
Without that, obviously,
it's not a rocket car.
And there's no way
we're gonna get 60 grand for it.
So, this is gonna
take a minute to figure out.
[Tony] Oh, yeah.
[Mark] You start thinking of solutions,
and I'll help Constance
and Caveman with that Cadillac.
All right. I'll see what I can do.
[Mark] We will
get that thing to blast off,
that I promise you.

I got wheels and tires coming.
So right now, we're just gonna drop it.
We're gonna do it the old school way,
we'll just heat the coils.
If you start at the bottom
where the coil touches the A-arm,
you heat up around in a circle,
and it'll go down.
When you pull the torch, it'll stop.
[Caveman] All right.
The coil springs on any car
give it a preset ride height.
So the simplest way to increase the value
of any vehicle is just to lower it.
So we're starting at 26 and a half.
The lower the car, the better it looks.
The better it looks, the more it's worth.
-Hey. Fire marshal bad.
-Oh, goodness.
[Mark] There's a million different ways
to lower a car.
You can put airbags on it.
You can put coil-overs on it.
You can change your entire suspension out
from underneath your car.
But all of those ways are very expensive
and very time-consuming.
All right. You wanna give it a bounce?
So if you wanna get down and dirty
and save yourself a ton of money,
all you have to do is heat
the front coil springs from the bottom up.
Hey, do we have
any marshmallows in the kitchen?
[Mark] No, no s'mores.
[all chuckle]
Heating the coil
actually relaxes the metal
so that it can compress on itself
until the car settles
at a certain ride height.
What's it measuring now, Caveman?
Um, well, this thing is not moving. No.
[Mark] Wanna bounce it again?
[mellow music playing]
-There it goes.
-[Caveman] Whoo.
Once you do that, you got a car
that rides low to the ground,
and you haven't even spent a dime.
I'm digging the way it looks.
That's about the perfect height
for a Cadillac.
We are now ready for bodywork and paint.
You guys get started with that.
I gotta meet with Shawn real quick.
Then I'm gonna paint this car,
and we can finish it off.
[dramatic techno music playing]

because I wanna talk about the rocket.
Fantastic. You got a buyer, and I'm out.

I've been working the phones,
let me tell ya.
But the general sense
I'm getting right now is,
I think a lot of people
are just apprehensive
about going out and buying
something like a rocket car.
-They just bought something
-You need one guy.
-One guy.
-I know that.
I'm looking for the right guy.
I'm just telling you
what kind of feedback I'm getting.
[Mark] I know there is a buyer out there
for this rocket car.
It's just gonna take
a little hunting to find that person.
I'm finding guys that want the car,
but they're just not willing
to pay the hefty price.
And believe it or not,
I'm running into the same exact thing
trying to sell the concept vehicles.
[Mark] That being said,
Shawn does have
a lot on his plate right now.
And the last thing I want
is for this car to take away
from the bigger goal of finding
a buyer for those concept vehicles.
I can tell this is a tough one for you.
And I get that.
This was my crazy idea
to make a rocket car.
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna talk
to Tony and the rest of the crew,
and we'll all get on our phones,
and we're all just gonna start
reaching out to everybody we know
and see if we can
help you out with a buyer.
And we'll just funnel it all back to you,
and you take it from there.
Honestly, I appreciate that
because I gotta get back
on selling these concept vehicles.
It's what we do around here.
We're family. We bail each other out.
So I have a Cadillac
that I have to go paint.
I hope you don't have
a problem selling the Cadillac.
Just don't put anything goofy on it.
[Mark] While Tony works on solving
our flame issue with the rocket car,
I wanna move on to the final two stages
of the Cadillac build.
Stage three, I'm gonna give it
a crazy wild hot rod paint job.
[hissing]
And we're gonna have some of
the most badass cheetah print flames
on a purple Cadillac you've ever seen.
[heavy rock music playing]
Is it hot in here,
or is it just the Cadillac?
-[all chuckling]
-I think it's badass. Looks cool.
-Let's get it done and get it out.

[Mark] The final stage is to give it
a crazy tricked-out interior.
The icing on the cake for me
is that badass fuzzy dash and all
the crazy stuff we did to the interior.
[Constance] Caveman, I told you
not to inhale while we do this.
[Caveman] I'm not inhaling it.
I'm breathing.
[Mark] This '62 Cadillac is the perfect
old-school Gotham Garage project.
We took a clean car that had a cap value,
put our thumbprint on it,
and now it looks like
it's ready to go to the car show.
It's got a one-of-a-kind paint job
and the perfect stance
that drops it low to the ground.
Between that and all of the other
strategic changes we did to the car,
this car should for sure double our money.
[Shawn sighs]
Oh, wow. [chuckles]
-This thing looks good.
-You like that, huh?
Jenny's gonna love this.
She's quite savvy as far as cars go.
Her father's a mechanic.
She's got a few classic cars herself.
I think this car fits her very well.
I was able to track down
the perfect buyer for this Cadillac.
It's a girl named Jenny,
and she says she's a die-hard car girl,
but she's also a girly girl.
So all the cheetah print
and the fuzzy stuff
is gonna totally fit her style.
-That's her now. She drives
-She drives a drop-top too.
-Yes.
-So it's a year older than this car.
You must be Jenny.
-Hey, what's up?
-Hey, how's it going?
-It's going great. How are you?
-This is Mark.
Hi, Jenny. Nice to meet you.
We valued this car at about 12 grand
when we picked it up at the salvage yard.
And we've only put
about three grand into this Cadillac.
So if we can turn 15 grand
into a $25,000 flip,
we're golden.

So this is a '62 Cadillac.
-It's been modified, just a little bit.
-[Jenny laughs] Yeah.
[Mark] Custom paint job.
It's got 20-inch wheels on it.
We lowered the suspension.
Cut the roof off. It's still a four-door.
But now it's a roadster
instead of a hardtop.
-Is that Is that cheetah print?
-That is cheetah print, yes.
It's beautiful. And it's in here too?
Oh, my And you've got the fur dash too.
-I love that. That's sick.
-[Mark] So it's all tied together.
What do you think?
-How much you asking for it?
-I'm figuring 30 grand is totally fair.
[inhales sharply]
-I'm thinking more like 18.
-[Shawn] Eighteen?
Oh, man. That would be giving it away.
I tell you what. I'm gonna come down
to 27.5 right off the top.
That's fair. You got to admit.
[Jenny exhales] It's a beautiful car.
But at the end of the day,
it's a four-door Cadillac sedan. Um
But to get this level of craftsmanship,
it is very labor-intensive.
I I under I understand
everything about labor-intensive.
I mean, the car out there, I was working
on it with my dad when I was nine,
so I appreciate all the work
that's been put into it.
How about 20?
Twenty? Man.
You're beating us up.
You've been wanting a Gotham Garage car.
Obviously, you know your stuff.
Twenty-four-five, and that's it.
That's all we can do.
Um [clicks tongue, inhales deeply]
It's definitely top of my budget.
[exhales]

that hasn't panned out like we thought.
I mean, don't get me wrong. It's cool.

a showpiece novelty.

a very complicated car to sell
because, I mean,
there's a lot going on here.
I mean, yes, it's a cool idea,
but that hasn't exactly translated
into a buyer that's willing
to throw down 60 grand.
So, right now, I'm down to my last lead.
I'm talking to a collector
that's interested,
but we are really far apart on the price.
I'm gonna try
and talk him up as high as possible.
But if this ends up being all I've got,
I just have to present it to the crew
and see what they wanna do.

rocket thrust was simple.

is that this land-speed car
doesn't have a ton of room
to add a huge propane tank.

So I did a little research
and a few minor calculations,
and I figured out
that if we string a bunch
of these smaller propane tanks together
and add a little bit of oxygen
as an accelerant
-[hisses]

we can get a much bigger flame.
If we do that, and it works,
I think we're gonna be ready for liftoff.
-[Mark] Is this where we'll do it?
-[Tony] Yeah. I'm ready to go.

We don't know
where Shawn landed on a buyer yet,

this car is definitely worth

I actually have found someone,
but what they're willing to pay
is nowhere near
what the value is of this, so

I know. And at $30,000,
that's a loss for us.
Remember, it took us 25 grand
in trade value just to acquire this car,
and we put about 20 grand into it.

to all the people you guys gave me.
You know, they love the car,
but nobody's willing
to throw down cash right now.
If we had more time,
I could probably find that buyer.
But based on the market right now,
people are just reluctant
to take a gamble on a specialty car.
I'm running into the same thing
with the concept vehicles.
I say wait on it.
Wait on the money. Wait for a buyer.
That's what I'd say too if we weren't
sitting on the concept vehicles.
I think the best course is to sell.
If I thought we had a chance
of finding a buyer next week
or even next month,
I wouldn't even
be bringing this up with the crew.
But from the responses I'm getting,
if we hold out for 60 grand,
this could be the type of car
that we sit on for quite a while.
You're pretty much saying we can either
sell it right now, today, for a loss,
or you need another five or six months
to get to our right number.

some of the expenses from this build.

We've been building
cartoon cars here for years.
That's how Gotham Garage got its start,
by making a true-to-life version
of the Speed Racer Mach 5.
So finding a collector that wants
a cartoon rocket car built by this shop?
I don't see what the problem is.
-Didn't you ever want a rocket car?
-Well, I mean, sure, as a kid.
If you had the money,
wouldn't you buy one?
I guess when you put it like that

we need to build a rocket.

a massive aluminum tube
that we can strap
to the top of the land speed car.

To finish it up, we'll wrap it in vinyl.

and complete the makeover

I get it. The idea of a rocket car
kind of freaks some people out,
but that was the point
of also getting this '62 Cadillac.
This is the type of car
that we can knock out quickly
and double our money on,
which will absorb
just that little bit of risk
that comes with doing a rocket car.
To turn a big profit on this car,
we're gonna do
four very strategic modifications.
First, we'll give it the Caveman special:
cut the roof off, now the car is topless.
Next, we'll lower the car
and give it some badass wheels and tires.
Third, we'll give it
a fully custom interior,
complete with a super-kitschy fuzzy dash.
And last, I'm gonna give it
a cheetah print-infused flame paint job
that screams "Gotham Garage."
That's how you take
a Cadillac worth 12 grand
and make it worth 25 grand.

they had all these elements
with fins and headlights and grills
that kind of were these mismatched pieces
that didn't quite go together yet,
and it just wasn't
refined enough to be desirable.
They're still really cool,
but what we're gonna do,
is gonna make it really, really desirable.
-So we're gonna make it sexy?
-Yeah.
-[Caveman yells]

there's one very important thing you need.
And that's a big-ass rocket.
So we'll come up with a design,
and we'll build that rocket from scratch.

[chuckles] Yeah, every kind of rocket.

But the big thing is,
we wanna be able to trigger the flame
from inside the car while we're driving.

[Mark] We're gonna need
a lot of fire extinguishers.
This is not your typical
custom car kind of deal.
There's a lot of physics
and there's a whole lot
of engineering going on
to make this whole rocket engine
work on top of this car.
People are gonna freak out
when they see it roll up on a trailer.
We're definitely gonna turn some heads.
Some guy'll go, "I gotta have that."
[Tony] I mean, what's more fun
than throwing fire as far as you can?
[both chuckling]
[Mark] So a true rocket car
is basically a jet car,
powered by a turbine jet engine
out of an airplane.
Those are millions of dollars
just to build them.
One of them just broke the sound barrier.
[Tony] Now that should blast
for a couple of minutes.
-Just enough to make it look cool.
-Trying to go to Mars, not the Moon.
[chuckles]

[Mark] What we're doing here
is giving a land speed car
the same look and feel
as driving in a jet car.
But that price tag
is only gonna be 60 grand.
Between the cost of labor
to build a rocket,
plus the cost of material and parts,
that's a hell of a deal if you ask me.

you need to find the perfect buyer.
Literally, I just bought three cars,
and I have no more room in my garage.

the right guy at the right time
that's willing to pay the right price.

is to get this giant rocket tube
to shoot out a massive flame.

So we need to create a system
where we can control our gas lines

through the car to the rocket,
so when we turn it all on,
we're shooting fire
out of the back of this thing.
Hey, Mark, it's a rocket strap.
It's gonna look like
the rocket is just strapped onto the car.
And in order to impress a buyer,
we need a giant, massive flame.

[Tony] So this could take
a little bit of trial and error.

it's more trial and less error
because when you're dealing
with a 5-foot flame,
you really don't want an error.

give it a preset ride height.
So the simplest way to increase the value
of any vehicle is just to lower it.
So we're starting at 26 and a half.
The lower the car, the better it looks.
The better it looks, the more it's worth.

But the general sense
I'm getting right now is,
I think a lot of people
are just apprehensive
about going out and buying
something like a rocket car.

-You need one guy.

-I know that.
I'm looking for the right guy.
I'm just telling you
what kind of feedback I'm getting.
[Mark] I know there is a buyer out there
for this rocket car.
It's just gonna take
a little hunting to find that person.
I'm finding guys that want the car,
but they're just not willing
to pay the hefty price.
And believe it or not,
I'm running into the same exact thing
trying to sell the concept vehicles.
[Mark] That being said,
Shawn does have
a lot on his plate right now.
And the last thing I want
is for this car to take away
from the bigger goal of finding
a buyer for those concept vehicles.
I can tell this is a tough one for you.
And I get that.
This was my crazy idea
to make a rocket car.
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna talk
to Tony and the rest of the crew,
and we'll all get on our phones,
and we're all just gonna start
reaching out to everybody we know
and see if we can
help you out with a buyer.
And we'll just funnel it all back to you,
and you take it from there.
Honestly, I appreciate that
because I gotta get back
on selling these concept vehicles.
It's what we do around here.

So I have a Cadillac
that I have to go paint.

our flame issue with the rocket car,
I wanna move on to the final two stages
of the Cadillac build.
Stage three, I'm gonna give it
a crazy wild hot rod paint job.

the most badass cheetah print flames
on a purple Cadillac you've ever seen.

[Mark] The final stage is to give it
a crazy tricked-out interior.
The icing on the cake for me
is that badass fuzzy dash and all
the crazy stuff we did to the interior.
[Constance] Caveman, I told you
not to inhale while we do this.

I'm breathing.
[Mark] This '62 Cadillac is the perfect
old-school Gotham Garage project.
We took a clean car that had a cap value,
put our thumbprint on it,
and now it looks like
it's ready to go to the car show.
It's got a one-of-a-kind paint job
and the perfect stance
that drops it low to the ground.
Between that and all of the other
strategic changes we did to the car,
this car should for sure double our money.
[Shawn sighs]
Oh, wow. [chuckles]
-This thing looks good.
-You like that, huh?
Jenny's gonna love this.
She's quite savvy as far as cars go.
Her father's a mechanic.
She's got a few classic cars herself.
I think this car fits her very well.
I was able to track down
the perfect buyer for this Cadillac.
It's a girl named Jenny,
and she says she's a die-hard car girl,
but she's also a girly girl.
So all the cheetah print
and the fuzzy stuff
is gonna totally fit her style.
-That's her now. She drives
-She drives a drop-top too.
-Yes.
-So it's a year older than this car.

We valued this car at about 12 grand
when we picked it up at the salvage yard.
And we've only put
about three grand into this Cadillac.
So if we can turn 15 grand
into a $25,000 flip,
we're golden.

So this is a '62 Cadillac.
-It's been modified, just a little bit.
-[Jenny laughs] Yeah.
[Mark] Custom paint job.
It's got 20-inch wheels on it.
We lowered the suspension.
Cut the roof off. It's still a four-door.
But now it's a roadster
instead of a hardtop.
-Is that Is that cheetah print?
-That is cheetah print, yes.
It's beautiful. And it's in here too?
Oh, my And you've got the fur dash too.
-I love that. That's sick.
-[Mark] So it's all tied together.

-How much you asking for it?
-I'm figuring 30 grand is totally fair.
[inhales sharply]
-I'm thinking more like 18.

Oh, man. That would be giving it away.
I tell you what. I'm gonna come down

That's fair. You got to admit.
[Jenny exhales] It's a beautiful car.
But at the end of the day,
it's a four-door Cadillac sedan. Um
But to get this level of craftsmanship,
it is very labor-intensive.
I I under I understand
everything about labor-intensive.
I mean, the car out there, I was working
on it with my dad when I was nine,
so I appreciate all the work
that's been put into it.
How about 20?
Twenty? Man.

It's definitely top of my budget.

Mark's come up with some
pretty crazy ideas over the years,
but I think
this might be his craziest yet.
Be that as it may, I still have
to find a buyer for this vehicle.
The crew reached out
to a bunch of their own contacts
and passed them along to me.
But so far,
that hasn't panned out like we thought.
I mean, don't get me wrong. It's cool.
But you're also making
a showpiece novelty.
[Shawn] This has been
a very complicated car to sell
because, I mean,
there's a lot going on here.
I mean, yes, it's a cool idea,
but that hasn't exactly translated
into a buyer that's willing
to throw down 60 grand.
So, right now, I'm down to my last lead.
I'm talking to a collector
that's interested,
but we are really far apart on the price.
I'm gonna try
and talk him up as high as possible.
But if this ends up being all I've got,
I just have to present it to the crew
and see what they wanna do.

We're gonna need to give it a little bit
of oxygen to give it an extra kick.

[Tony] We're not certified for it.

The problem with our original
rocket thrust was simple.
It just wasn't big enough.
We were aiming for Apollo 13,
and instead we got this weenie roaster.
That's cute.
All right, let's get this together
and make some more fire.
-Fire time.
-Let's make a bigger fire.
[Tony] But the issue
is that this land-speed car
doesn't have a ton of room
to add a huge propane tank.
I got hoses.
-One, two, and a whole box of fittings.
-[Constance] Mm!
So I did a little research
and a few minor calculations,
and I figured out
that if we string a bunch
of these smaller propane tanks together
and add a little bit of oxygen
as an accelerant
-[hisses]
-Whoo! That's cold!
[chuckles]
we can get a much bigger flame.
If we do that, and it works,
I think we're gonna be ready for liftoff.
-[Mark] Is this where we'll do it?
-[Tony] Yeah. I'm ready to go.
I wanna see this thing burn.
-Come on.

Okay, now that this thing is dialed in,

get it wrapped, touched up,
and let's get it loaded
and out to the desert
so we can test it out.

ignition on our rocket,

an old-school red vinyl wrap
just like you would see
on a Saturday morning cartoon.
Well, now that SOA is done wrapping it,

[Mark] When this car came in,
it looked fast.
But now, it looks even faster.
It's gonna be a bona fide
250 mile an hour missile
flying through the desert.

every kid wanted to be an astronaut,
and that was the whole point
of building this rocket car.

With this car, I wanted to put you
in front of that TV on a Saturday morning,
where all you were dreaming about
was blasting off into outer space.
-[gas hisses]
-[whooshing]
[inspirational music playing]
[all cheering]
[car whistles]
[Mark] When you get into this rocket car,
it immediately transports you
back to being a kid again.
[whooshes]
[all] Yeah!
[all cheering]

-How did it feel to go that fast?
-Can't explain it.
You'd have to sit in it and go
to understand what it feels
-Then let's go! That sounds like an offer!

[Mark] This rocket car
is the most fun joyride
a car lover can have.
We don't know
where Shawn landed on a buyer yet,
but in my mind,
this car is definitely worth
the price of admission.
Watch out. Here he comes.

I think we need to talk a little bit
about selling this car.
[Tony] So I take it, Shawn,
you haven't found anybody yet?
I actually have found someone,
but what they're willing to pay
is nowhere near
what the value is of this, so
I mean, how close are we on that number?
He's talking 30 grand.
[Tony] Thirty grand? That's it?
I know. And at $30,000,
that's a loss for us.
Remember, it took us 25 grand
in trade value just to acquire this car,
and we put about 20 grand into it.
So technically,
we're into this car for $45,000.
You found one guy out of all
the rich guys who wants a rocket car?
[Shawn] Look, I called around
to all the people you guys gave me.
You know, they love the car,
but nobody's willing
to throw down cash right now.
If we had more time,
I could probably find that buyer.
But based on the market right now,
people are just reluctant
to take a gamble on a specialty car.
I'm running into the same thing
with the concept vehicles.
I say wait on it.
Wait on the money. Wait for a buyer.
That's what I'd say too if we weren't
sitting on the concept vehicles.
I think the best course is to sell.
If I thought we had a chance
of finding a buyer next week
or even next month,
I wouldn't even
be bringing this up with the crew.
But from the responses I'm getting,
if we hold out for 60 grand,
this could be the type of car
that we sit on for quite a while.
You're pretty much saying we can either
sell it right now, today, for a loss,
or you need another five or six months
to get to our right number.
It could be five or six months,
it could be a month, it could be never.
If we could sell it for 30 grand,
it would at least cover
some of the expenses from this build.
Then we can move on to the next project
and try to recoup the loss.
Um, I mean, I hate to see it go
for less than what we want.
But, I mean, we already have money
sitting in storage right now
with the concept car and bike.
And I feel like those are more worth
waiting on than something like this.
[Tony] Yeah. You know,
I hate losing money, guys,
but maybe we should
just take the hit, sell it, and cash out.
