Top Gear (US) s04e06 Episode Script

Can Cars Float?

1 Now on "Top Gear" It's falling apart! We convert everyday cars into amphibious vehicles I'm okay.
And take our lives in our hands as we attempt to cross Lake Ontario.
What happened?! The Great Lakes The largest group of freshwater lakes on the planet.
These would be the proving grounds for the most ambitious challenge we have ever done.
"Top Gear" had sent us to Buffalo, New York, to create amphibious vehicles that could function just as well on land as they could on water.
What car does one pick for an amphibious car? Well, you're gonna need something tough.
That's why I chose an '87 Jeep Wrangler.
The tag line for the jeep in the '70s was, "if a jeep can't take you there, maybe you ought to think twice about going.
" Well, I'm thinking about it.
And I'm still going.
In trying to make an amphibious car, I certainly don't want to be stuck in there if the thing sinks.
So I chose a 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio.
It's beautiful, beautiful new and shiny the least-manly convertible ever made, next to the Miata.
But to my defense, the most successful amphibious car ever sold to the public The amphibi-car was a convertible.
So this is a natural choice.
While Rutledge may have been enjoying his Cabrio, I preferred something a bit more manly A 1986 Plymouth Conquest.
This was a little bit of a dream car when I was a child.
Yes, commercials of it bursting out of a smoky cage.
Faster 0-to-60 time than a 944 Porsche.
But how is it gonna be on water? Well, it's gonna be fast, it's gonna be fun, and it will make an amazing amphibious car.
And, of course, Jackie chan made it famous in "Cannonball run II" Submarining it through a lake.
With our cars chosen, it as time to transform them.
We worked through the night perfecting our masterpieces.
The next morning, we met up at the water's edge in Buffalo, and I'd nailed it.
Amazing.
Now, that is how you build an amphibious car.
I'd seamlessly blended America's most popular pleasure boat The sea ray to my already bulletproof VW.
Two engines, two steering wheels, and a ton of paint and glue.
50% car, 50% boat, 100% awesome.
A little bit of blowby there, it looks like.
She's running a little rich.
Is that a Starion or a Conquest? This is technically a Conquest.
But, as you know, identical to the famous Mitsubishi Starion.
Wow.
You know we're supposed to turn these into boats.
That's just still a Conquest.
And that was its brilliance.
Tucked away in the back was the most powerful jet ski engine I could find.
Add to that a rudder, a discreet rear wing, 20 gallons of sealant to keep it afloat, and you had yourself the lightning-fast Plymouth Turboat.
What have you done, by the way? I like the bumpers.
I think that in a Volkswagen.
That was a big surprise.
I wouldn't have called that.
You're missing that this is perfect.
I can sit up here and drive, having a great time "Oh, I'm on the highway.
" Boom, there's a lake.
I'll just hop in the back, steer my boat.
If you want, you can jet ski off the back.
Can I see you get from the front seat to the back seat? Hard to Get in there! Okay! Oh, no! Watch out for the other boats! I've got it.
Big boat's about to crash into you.
Look how easy that was.
Really nice, seamless integration of the two crappy machines, though.
Like, if you would have picked one that was good, at least it would have had some sort of merit.
But you picked two that were not good, and you've, like two wrongs doesn't make a right.
Oh, my lord! What in the hell is that? This is a recipe for disaster.
Look at him.
Look at him.
Oh, my gosh.
What in the hell? Does that thing actually work? Let's see.
Hey, hoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! It's pretty cool, huh? Okay, I'll give you it's a pretty good boat.
Yeah.
But it's got to be good on land, also.
It's fine here.
Put on the emergency brake.
I'll do it.
That seems safe.
I had combined a v6-powered airboat with my already-indestructible Jeep and replaced its heavy motor with a lightweight motorcycle engine, which did mean I'd have to use a hand clutch, but it would be fine.
This is just an airboat with a little bit of Jeep packed on the top.
This is a landing craft, for God's sake.
Are you kidding me? You didn't just see me land? I just came from the water and landed right here.
A land-ing craft is different than a land craft.
You know what I mean? Like, there's really no car left in this.
It's just an airboat.
There's no Jeep left.
That's for sure.
I mean, there's a grill.
Yeah, there's a grill and some headlights and some flags.
And a tub of a once-cool YJ.
It's a hull.
It's not a tub.
It's a hull.
I feel like you guys have lost the essence of life here.
It's about fun, right? It's about driving fast.
We're car guys.
That's what we do we drive fast.
Boom! Turbo! It's got it written on the side! The nice thing about this is it's red, so when it sinks, the coast guard will be able to find it.
Before we tested our creations on the water Let's roll.
I'm gonna Jackie Chan this thing.
I'm okay.
We had to prove that our vehicles could still do everything a regular car could do.
So we headed off to our first challenge a few miles away.
All right, yes.
We all are on the road getting from "a" to "b," but we're not all going through the same experience.
I can guarantee you that.
I've got a car that's darty.
It's fun.
Rutledge is bouncing all over the place.
Adam can barely remember what his name was because it's taking so much concentration for him to clutch with his right hand.
That doesn't sound good.
What's up? I think I dumped my chain.
What? Your chain drive? You lost the chain? I think I yeah, I think I I think I broke the chain.
Come on.
It proves kind of the bad decisions that you've made.
How did you break such a big chain? Are you that bad at driving it? You actually broke it.
I don't know if you noticed I happen to have another motor.
That's an That's an airboat motor.
It still works.
Well, I know we are not riding behind you, so enjoy the view.
Fire it up.
Let's roll.
With Adam down to one engine , we eventually made it to our first challenge on the Buffalo skyway.
Towering 110 feet over the city, this is no place for mistakes.
Here we'd test to see if our modified cars could still get up to speed fast enough to be practical in everyday traffic.
Rut was up first.
He'd have to hit 50 miles per hour, pass us at the bridge's midway point, turn around, and come back.
Fastest time would win.
How hard can this be? I mean, sure, I only have front brakes now.
There's basically no rear-suspension flex at all.
This top could rip off at 50.
And it could catch on fire at any minute.
Other than that Are you ready?! Let's do this! Oh, man! That hurt! All right, weigh anchor, all ahead full! Oh, my God! It's so loud! I have no idea how fast I'm going! I've got 30.
You're doing 30.
I can't hear anything! Oh! He lost his life preserver.
It's falling apart! 48.
50! 50! Did I hit it? Okay.
Okay.
Oh, my gosh! The suspension is terrible.
Does he have brakes, or does he throw out an anchor? There's the three-point turn.
Oh, set sail! And stop the clock.
Guys, I think my ear is bleeding! Holy cow! That is a loud whatever it is.
This is the coolest Cabrio of all time.
Whatever.
36:50.
You're next.
No problem.
This is mine to win right now.
This is the most fun car.
It's the fastest car.
It's got the best brakes.
It turns the best.
If I could do a 180 with the hand brake, I'd have it locked.
Am I willing to risk that with a 100-foot drop on both sides? We'll see.
Okay, you ready? Three Two, one Go! And we're off! Wow, he's already at 30.
50! Come up.
We're not You're not at us yet.
Okay, that's good.
That's good.
You just stopped the clock right then? Well, yeah, you weren't all the way here.
What?! What was my time? 27:04.
Yes! Why don't you park that piece of crap? Yes! Speaking of pieces of crap, where's yours? Good news and bad news.
Bad news is the bike motor's shot.
The good news is I have another motor that's never been tested on land.
Other than that, I'm fine.
All right.
Let's do this.
All right, fellas.
Fire it up.
Okay, hit it in three Two One Go! Coming up Rut shows off the build quality of his VW Cabrio boat.
Okay.
And later, the battle is on as we set out to cross one of the Great Lakes.
Turn it off! Turn it off! Turn it off! We were in Buffalo, New York, testing the road-worthiness of our homemade amphibious cars in a high-speed challenge.
Tanner had beat me.
Yes! But now it was Adam's turn.
Okay, hit it in three Two One Go! And there's an airplane taking off on the bridge.
That's 25.
Might let him know that.
You're not going very fast.
That's 30.
That blows a lot of crap around.
Did it hit 50 yet? No, he's slowing down.
We're gonna be here all day.
He's never gonna hit 50.
He can't get faster than that.
Ready and go.
Faster.
That's 20.
Ohh! You got up to 30 miles an hour.
Whoa! Oh, here he comes.
No, still 28 miles an hour.
And stop the clock.
Well, that's a record.
How'd we do? Really? 19 minutes.
It's a minute quicker than I thought it would do.
But did you actually hit 50? Yeah, down there I did.
Down where? In imagination town? Down in make-believe alley? Okay, listen, it wasn't built for speed.
It does go on land.
And so far, I'm the only vehicle that's been on land and on water.
I have yet to see you two go in the water.
What's next? My Turboat is gonna be just fine in the water.
I can't hear you! Trust me! I can't hear you! It's gonna be awesome! What?! My Plymouth Turboat had easily taken the speed challenge.
Next up was a test of build quality.
We each had to race a slalom course over a rough cobble street.
Fastest time and the least damage would win.
What kind of suspension do you got left on that Jeep? I don't.
That's perfect for the Starion.
- Yeah.
- Go right ahead.
Hey, what, did you elect a pope? Okay, so it's a little bit choppy.
I still have nearly stock ground clearance, and I would like to point out that with the engine in the back, I actually have better launch off the line 'cause I grip on the back.
It's almost too easy.
Whatever.
Candy from a baby is still candy.
Let's do this.
You ready? Ring the bell, you pansies.
Okay, here we go in three, two, one! Ohh! It's actually very smooth! Ohh.
Oh, he's gonna have to back up.
It's not near as cool when you have to back up.
All right, get ready to stop.
Get ready to stop.
Whoo-hoo! You both have reverse, don't you? Well, yeah, it's a car.
Don't you think you should have reverse? It's all right.
It's not mandatory.
- How was that? - That was pretty good.
Good lord! - Is that fast? - Could be.
Who's up next? This is gonna be a bumpy ride.
And it doesn't handle that well, either.
So You know, this is fastest time and least amount of damage.
Yeah.
Fire in the hole! All right, count it off, fellas! Here we go in three, two, one Why did I even count? He just went when he wanted to.
Oh, my God! Okay.
Okay.
There it is.
Now we got to turn around.
Turn around! Eject! Oh, and he didn't turn the wheel, so he's just heading right back to where he was.
Oh, God.
Okay.
This might be the safest driving he's ever done.
That looks pretty bumpy.
It does! I'm back! What an idiot.
You realize he didn't actually slalom at all coming back.
You broke your mirror.
How's that? So 1:08 was your time.
Plus there's a penalty for the mirror.
It didn't fall off.
It's fine.
Stop! Don't! Ohh! All right, so 1:08, 10 seconds a cone.
That's 1:38.
What do you want to penalize for the mirror? 20 seconds.
Not 20 seconds! You knocked it down! 1:58.
My turn.
With Adam failing to beat Tanner's 22 seconds, it was going to be down to me.
But I did have a small issue.
Because I used half of a Cabrio and half of a boat, when I put it together, I had to fiberglass the whole bottom.
So, it's also really low.
There's not a lot of clearance.
So if I go over one of these cobblestones that's a little high and then I punch a hole in the bottom of my boat, this thing will surely sink when it hits water, which is not good.
Okay, let's do it.
Let's do it.
- Ready? - Ready! I can't hear anything you're saying.
Okay, go! Here we go.
Oh, that is Oh, I lost and my top is falling.
Coming up, will it be sink or swim when we finally get all our vehicles into the water? We were in Buffalo, New York, competing over who created the best amphibious car.
My Plymouth Turboat had dominated the 0-to-50 test and had been faster than Adam driving on cobblestones in the build-quality test.
Now it was Rut's turn.
Okay, let's do it.
Let's do it.
Ready? Ready! I can't hear anything you're saying.
Okay, go! Here we go.
Oh, that is oh, I lost And my top is falling.
Oh, my God, he's bouncing all over the place.
There he goes.
One cone down.
Okay.
That's a little uncomfortable there! Oh! Okay! Ow! Okay.
Ow! That's not good.
All right, okay.
This is awful.
Nice work.
I'm a prisoner in my own car-boat.
What happened? It seemed like a good idea to use the bimini top from the boat.
You want the good news? Yeah.
The good news is you can take your top down while you're moving.
Want the bad news? The bad news was that with the broken mirror, a damaged top, and a slower time, he'd lost.
And it was a second victory for my Turboat.
The last test of our vehicle's road-worthiness would be an endurance challenge.
They'd have to survive the 30-mile journey from Buffalo to Lake Ontario, which we'd be attempting to cross.
With Adam violating every rule of the road, apart from speeding, of course Oh, this isn't gonna be good.
We merged on to the freeway.
Adam is going to die.
That was a semitruck.
This is dangerous.
Big truck.
Wow.
You know why Tanner's car has been so good at all the car stuff? Because it's not a boat! All he has is a car! Tanner is gonna fail so miserably the moment we hit water.
Adam didn't get the contest.
It needs to be good on the street and in water.
All he has is a boat with wheels underneath it.
It's funny-looking, but it's a terrible idea.
These guys are gonna be laughing at me now, but wait till we get to the water.
That's what this was made for.
Uh-oh.
Go forward or go back? Never surrender.
I'm gonna go forward.
After 20 minutes, Rutledge and I successfully completed the challenge and settled in for what was sure to be a long wait for Adam.
I mean, we did highway speed the whole way here.
Who knows how long it's gonna take him? I don't know where he is.
I mean, maybe he found a puddle somewhere and he just, like, started driving around in a puddle.
I hadn't found a puddle, but the Jeep was up and running, and I was on my way.
Have you seen this How water gets deep? That stuff is deep.
Yeah, it's a Lake.
That's why I built an actual amphibious vehicle.
You just have a car that says the word "boat" on the side.
"Turboat.
" Oh, excuse me.
Turboat.
Well, speak of the devil.
Oh, that thing is so sketchy.
Wow, he's still in one piece.
How are you, fellas? Unbelievable.
Yeah.
I'm not real certain this wheel is even making contact with the ground.
It's all right.
I made it.
Really? Yeah.
When he pulled in just then, it was it's not! This isn't even making contact with the ground.
It doesn't matter.
I'm still here, okay? It does sometimes.
It's all right.
- What took you so long? - I ran out of gas.
I don't have an odometer or a fuel gage.
And I had to clean up a picnic.
Since we had each successfully completed the road-endurance challenge, our attention turned toward the magnitude of our water crossing.
Look at that.
Look how far that is.
How far is it? It would be a terrifying 35-mile crossing of Lake Ontario to reach our goal in Toronto, Canada.
A normal boat could do it in just over an hour.
But we weren't sure if our unproven cars would had even make it.
It feels like we should start tomorrow, right? Yeah, we're gonna run out of daylight.
Yeah.
I mean, we could totally do it.
It just feels like if we tried tomorrow, we'd have a little more time to enjoy it, you know, take our time.
Okay, let's get a beer and come back tomorrow.
Good plan.
Yeah.
Early the next morning, the Lake was still 35 miles across, but we'd woken up with a renewed confidence.
Gentlemen, today's the day ordinary men will be called upon to do extraordinary things.
It looks nice out there.
Yeah.
I think I'm gonna go get on the water.
Yeah? Yeah, I'm gonna go first.
Go get them, tiger.
See you in Canada.
Once we had all launched our vehicles, our plan was to meet up at the mouth of the bay to start our assault on Canada.
I'd already proven my creation on land, so all I needed to do was reach Toronto and get my car on to dry land first to seal overall victory.
Okay.
Here it goes.
So, what I have to do is start the jet ski motor, full throttle, get that puppy revving, drive in hard, and then climb out of the sun roof in order to steer with the rudder All in the matter of about one second.
You think he's a good swimmer? I hope so.
Okay, gentlemen, let's do this.
All right, you ready? Go! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! Oh, his boat motor's Oh, look at that! Come on! Yes! We'll see you in Canada! The prop is barely in the water.
That's all right.
Don't tell him.
He's so happy.
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! That's what I'm talking about! But captain race boy's celebrations were short-lived.
Oh, no! Oh, no! I lost steering control.
It's filling up with water.
He's in trouble.
Oh, no! Oh, no! Abandon ship! No! Come on! We were on the shores of Lake Ontario starting the final challenge for our homemade amphibious cars A 35-mile crossing to Toronto.
I was the first into the water, and things weren't going very well.
No! Come on! As much as he annoys me, I couldn't let the little fella drown.
Admiral.
Don't worry, race boy.
Jeep is coming to the rescue.
I may have lost all the land challenges, but my Jeep was finally in its element.
And I knew just what to do to help.
You just hit my exhaust pipe.
What? You just crashed into my boat.
Yeah, you're right.
It was doing fine up till now.
It was doing great.
I was just getting the engine up to temperature.
La Oh, this is fantastic.
Turn it off! Turn it off! Turn it off! With the naval battle drifting out towards Canada, it was time to ease the VW ever so gently into the Lake.
All right, this is it.
Here I go.
Nice and easy.
Nice and easy.
Feeling it float.
Feeling it float.
Okay, okay, okay.
It's floating.
It is floating.
Here we go.
Okay.
Hey! She's running! Oh, it's working! It's working! Ahoy! Oh, yeah.
Hello, Canada! Where are those guys? I'm slumped over! Oh, no! Oh, no, no, no! Seriously? What?! I didn't that's was Oh, no! Ohh! Adam's concern for me was undeniable.
But then, proof that there is a God.
Oh Oh What happened? Oh, no! Come here! Throw me the raft! Adam! What the hell do we do now? I'll come get you! I'm coming to get you! Come on back.
What happened? He blew me over.
Where'd the Jeep go? It's done.
It's gone.
It's down there.
Down! Come on, Rut.
I'm coming.
You guys are gonna have to sit on the back, okay? Okay.
Here it comes.
Here it comes.
That was good.
You guys It doesn't look like we're gonna make it to Canada.
Climb back here.
I need you in the back.
I need some weight.
I don't want y'all to sink mine just 'cause your ideas are terrible.
Here I come, Adam.
Oh, my goodness gracious.
There you go.
Come on.
Come on.
Come on.
There it is.
Man down.
I need you to sit here.
Adam, I need you to sit here, or else we're also gonna sink this one.
You guys do realize what this means.
This means I've won.
No, it doesn't.
You have to get us to Canada if this means you won.
Get to Canada, it means you won.
You guys have no vehicles left.
They're gone.
They've sunk.
Just go to Canada, all right? Don't tell me what to do.
I don't know if you realize this, but now that you two are aboard, I'm the captain.
- Seriously? - Yeah.
Great.
Shall we? You guys ready to go to Canada? Let's go.
We may have been down two boats and only 200 feet offshore, but we were determined to make it to Canada.
Can we go any faster? I don't even think we're keeping up with the current.
We're losing ground.
You know what? I'm gonna change this thing into a time machine, and I'm gonna go back, and I'm gonna wave as I pass you guys stuck in the water.
Ungrateful.
Let's see what she'll do here.
Yeah, open her up.
Oh, now we're moving.
No, no, let's scoot back.
You're fine.
Yeah, just move back a little bit.
You're fine.
He's not married.
Go, baby.
You got to admit this is pretty nice, right? This is gonna be the longest trip ever.
With the extra weight of two stowaways, we were lying low in the water as we left the shelter of the bay.
Oh, brace yourself! It's getting a little choppy.
It's getting a little choppy.
Brace yourself.
I'm jumping.
- Don't jump.
Don't jump.
- You'll be fine.
Uh-oh.
I should warn you guys I've never owned a boat because I'm terrified of water.
That's great.
After a couple of hours, we were still afloat.
And if we continued at a steady 5 knots, barring any catastrophic failure in my design, we'd reach Toronto well before sunset.
By midday, we had lost sight of U.
S.
soil and were making steady progress.
But having no landmarks in sight had raised a small problem.
Do you even know which way you're going? I feel like since we can't see anything I can't.
And there's clouds, so there's no sun, I feel like we really should be going that way.
Do you have a compass on this thing? What makes you think we're going the wrong direction? I can't see land anywhere.
What makes you think we're going the right direction? We need to be going north, and yet the sun is behind us, instead of that way.
We're not even we're lost.
Just when we thought there was no hope, we heard a familiar sound.
Do I stop, or what do I do? Hands up.
I don't think you have to put your hands up.
I've never been pulled over by a boat.
It was the Canadian coast guard.
Now at least we knew where we were.
To get to Canada.
We're Yeah.
Yeah.
Yes, sir.
Um Yeah.
It's just a little bit back there.
We'll have some explaining to do, for sure.
How far is it from here? 23 miles.
It was already 2:00 P.
M.
, and with only 1/3 of our journey complete, we'd have to increase our speed and risk putting extra pressure on the engine to have any chance of reaching Toronto before nightfall.
Over the next two hours, we managed to cover 14 miles.
We actually began to believe we couldn't make it.
Keep going.
Ohh! Um That didn't sound good.
Oh What do we do now? We were halfway into our final challenge, a 35-mile crossing of Lake Ontario, to determine who had made the best amphibious car.
Adam and I had already sunk our cars.
Ohh! And now in the middle of the Lake, Rut's Cabrio wasn't looking so good, either.
Oh We were stuck.
But with a few texts and the help of my phone's GPS, I had figured a way out of this jam.
Do you hear something? Yes, I do.
What is that? Bam! Needing help.
Yeah.
And a beer, if that's cool.
We'll see you guys later.
"We'll see you guys later"? I'm gonna get on the back.
So good to see you.
Hey, buddy! It looks like a full You were right.
It is a full house, isn't it? See you, buddy.
Let's get Are we all going? Come on.
Let's go.
See you.
High five.
- Are you? - Sorry, guys.
You're just gonna leave us? That's it.
You're just gonna take off and leave us.
I'll see you back on U.
S.
soil.
Well, that sucked.
Oh, gosh.
Oh, oh, oh! Oh So this is how it ends.
Then they make a wake and dump us.
Well, you got a flare gun? No.
Why would I have a flare gun? Our only hope was that after a little breather, somehow the engine would come back to life.
I'm gonna try and get it started.
Co on.
Come on.
Don't fail me now.
Come on, baby.
Come on, baby.
Come on.
All right, she's alive.
Okay.
Let's go.
We'd been pushing this little motor hard all day.
Luckily, it had cooled down and was back up and running, but for how long? Here goes nothing, huh? It's not very encouraging.
You know what? I'm glad he's gone.
We're making better time.
Now we're gonna make it just to spite him.
It was late into the afternoon, and with 10 nautical miles to go and only two hours of daylight left, it was a race against time.
Finally, after 12 hours, two sunken cars, and one deserter, the clouds cleared, and victory was in sight.
Right there.
See that? That's Toronto.
Land! Land! All right! I don't think you're supposed to say it.
I have the captain's hat.
I'm sorry.
Land! Good job.
I see land! Good job! See that right there? That tower head towards that.
We were so close, we could smell the Canadian bacon, and with just one final push, my VW would make history.
I think this is our last charge.
I think we might be able to get her to plane now.
All right, let's go.
Hit it.
That's it.
I hit it.
Uh-oh.
What? Your pillage pump has stopped pumping.
Look.
Oh, that's a lot of water in there.
We got to get this thing to shore, man, or we're gonna go down.
Well, don't stand up.
That's not helping.
Well, that's not hurting.
All right.
You got to be careful when you come into the harbor with all these other boats.
They'll make way.
There's a right of way here.
Who's got the right of way? I have no idea.
That's not gonna help us.
Look at this, man.
We're almost there.
Keep going, Rut.
Come on.
We're almost home.
All right, you've got to watch for sailboats and these other Oh, gosh.
Oh, there's a boat going right behind us.
What? There's a boat going right behind us.
There's a lot of traffic here.
This is it! What did I tell you?! Okay, now you t to get it up out of the water.
