Ice Road Truckers (2007) s04e10 Episode Script

The Ace vs. The Ice

Tonight on Ice Road Truckers A wide trailer on a narrow road Spells disaster for greg.
What in the hell are you Doing? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Steep slopes give Lisa a run for her money.
Oh Whoa, whoa.
Alex loses control.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! And in the wilds Of alaska All righty, you can do it.
Jack heads onto Thin ice.
These are the Truckers who make their Living Yee-Haw! On thin ice.
Fairbanks, 5 p.
M.
Carlile calls in their ace Driver jack jessee for a special Mission.
What's happening? Well, I got a special one Here for you today.
Whoo-Hoo! I like special.
Remember where bettles is? Oh, boy.
You can weave your way in There, right? They're sending Jack off the dalton highway and Onto the bettles trail.
It's a rough ride through the Alaskan wilderness and across a Frozen river.
Okay.
Got some construction Materials they need to get in There before things get real Rough on the road, so Hope I don't drop a tire in It.
I'll call you if I do.
If you do, you call me, if You've got cell service there.
I don't know.
It'll be that emergency button.
Jack's hauling a Load of drainage pipe.
In the ten years he's been Driving in alaska, jack's only Ventured to bettles twice.
I remember the first time I Drove into bettles, about six Years ago.
I've never been back in there Without chains.
I chained everything up.
I chainedput a steering tire Chain on.
I've chained the whole tractor Up.
I even put a drag chain back on The trailer so, you know, it's Gonna be a really rough ride.
Hopefully I won't fall through The ice.
But sitting here, we're kind of Wasting a little time.
We'll get it going again.
He's heading 200 Miles north to the bettles Turnoff.
But, after a late start, he'll Wait for daylight to break the Trail.
Gonna go out to the edge of The road out there, and I think I'm gonna call it a night.
And it's just because this road Is so rough.
You know, it's worth it to take The extra time and make the Right decisions.
At the other end of The dalton, greg boadwine is Southbound, fighting his way Through an arctic blow.
It's howling like a banshee Up here.
It's blowing.
It's definitely a little harder To tell exactly where I am now, With all the snow on the road.
This is right about the spot That I snapped my rear end last Week.
He's on a rescue Mission to recover a load that's Been stranded and return it to Fairbanks.
For greg, it's a welcome Opportunity Pretty much, if they ask me To do something, I'm just gonna Do it.
After he broke his Rear axle and got busted for Going 20 miles an hour over the Speed limit.
You know, the max vehicle Speed's a little high.
You got a 69 on here, which is Not good.
I guess it is kind of another Step in the redemption process.
Just gotta keep our eyes open For it now.
Man, this should be the load.
It's a 15-Ton Man-Lift on an 11-Foot-Wide Trailer.
It's greg's first Oversized load on the dalton.
It's the first time I've ever Hauled one of these trailers.
Getting this Back-Haul is the break greg's Been waiting for, but this Enormous load might be more than He can handle.
It's completely foreign to Me and so, just to be on the Safe side, make sure I get back And make sure this trailer and Man-Lift get back.
At the carlile yard In fairbanks, lisa kelly is up! Before first light, looking for Her shot at redemption.
I've got to weigh this thing, I've got to get it over to the Shop, and I wanted to be out of Here at 6:00, so let's go.
After running into The ditch last week Lisa's in a hurry To put bad luck behind her.
Everything is just frozen.
Everything freezes when you put Water on it.
But after getting Her truck washed last night, Lisa's having problems getting Out of the yard.
Every time we wash it, it Does that.
I just need to get in there in Case I need the tools.
I guess all the water gets in All the locks and all the Cracks, and I think I was in my Sleeper while he was washing it, And I got sprayed with water in My own bed.
Hey, dale, do you have a torch? Gotcha.
Thanks.
Got her fixed.
Thawed out and Ready to go, lisa powers up Before hitting the road.
First take two pieces of Bread, and you put them on a Napkin so you don't make a huge Mess.
Take my really smart peanut Butter, and you need to evenly Spread it on both pieces of Bread.
And if you put it on both sides Of the bread, it protects the Bread from getting soaked with From your jelly.
Nobody likes wet bread.
Very low carb jelly that tastes Very yummy.
I'm putting enough jelly on to, Like, counter all the peanut Butter.
It's pretty much got to bleed Jelly.
And that's how you make a Sandwich.
'Cause it's really hard to make A peanut butter and jelly Sandwich while you're driving.
Too muchtoo much jelly on This thing.
It's bleeding all over me.
Northbound, number two mile.
And today's challenge, as if Enough, today I'm gonna do it While eating a sandwich.
Hmm, this should be interesting.
As lisa heads up The dalton, 170 miles north, Jack's ready to head off the Dalton.
We're gonna go back into the Village of bettles.
It's more like a logger's road Or a jeep trail here.
You know, this hill, I imagine It would be back in the early '60s when they first started Driving up here.
This is probably exactly what They did.
They came through with a blade And just made a trail.
Bettles was founded In 1898, during the alaskan gold Rush.
It was used as an airstrip in World war ii and later became A wilderness area.
Alaska was encouraged to Develop this wonderful Wilderness to develop a tourist Industry.
And we're the transportation hub For gates of the arctic national Park.
The park covers Larger than yellowstone.
This is the original bettles Lodge.
It's in the national register of Historical places.
Each year, 5,000 Tourists flock here, hoping to Catch a glimpse of the caribou, Bears, and wolves.
There's a moose running right Across the road in front of me.
Oh, no, he took the ditch.
Trail, jack approaches the Frozen jim river.
Usually every time I go over The jim river, it's on a Bridge on the dalton highway.
It's been a long time since I've Been out here and actually Crossed the ice.
See, I don't fall through.
This would not be a good way to Start the trip.
Looks like we've got a little Overflow coming up here.
Looks kind of fresh.
I'll bet you it's pretty slick.
An overflow forms When water from below the ice Seeps up through the cracks and Rises above the surface layer.
Oh, man.
Oh, lord.
It's a sure sign That the river ice is melting Fast.
So it's a really big deal, And we've got to be really Careful when these overflows Happen.
Jack scouts for the Safest way to cross the thin Ice.
If I get into this, I'll Break through it with the truck.
Feel like I'm gonna step in it And break through, and that's Just 190 pounds.
Yeah, I don't think that'll hold The truck up.
The road goes to the left and The road goes straight.
I'm not sure which way is the Safer way to go right now.
It's hard to tell, so I'm Gonna walk over here and check This out real quick.
I could easily drop itho, Right here, look at that.
Get a steer tire down Into that, and I may not come Back out.
That's a lot softer right there, And if I get off into that Stuff, I know I'm toast.
I got one heck of a decision to Make right now.
Next Uh-Oh! Alex is sliding Backwards.
Holy mackerel! Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! And greg gets run Off the road.
Hey, move out of the way! So [bleep.]
! In the freight Yards of fairbanks Alex, how are we doing? Alex debogorski Is looking to get the jump on His canadian rival.
Yeah, it seems that hugh Hasn't come in yet to get a Load, so it looks like I'll be Outget out of the gate before He does.
Last trip, hugh Stole a load out from under him.
They were gonna give it to "Alice," but "alice" ain't here.
Well, I just stole your load, Buddy.
Now alex is playing Catch-Up.
Well, since hugh got a Back-Haul out of prudhoe bay Last trip and I didn't, so Hugh's kind of got ahead in our Load count.
But since I got here this Morning before hugh did, And if I can get to prudhoe bay And back first, well, then I'll Regain my lead.
There was a couple loads in the Yard, and I got a load of pipe, But there was a couple other Loads there, and there was one In particular looked pretty Heavy.
Big reels.
So I'm not sure which load Hugh's gonna get.
If he gets that one, that'll Slow him down a little bit too.
I've got a mailbox load Today.
Ooh, cool.
Two big reels.
Max right out.
Let's go look at that one.
Oh, she'll be grossing out at, Now there's a nice load.
Nice and heavy.
This 90,000 pound Load of electrical cable is a New record for hugh.
Heaviest one so far.
I've had 86,000, but You don't want this [bleep.]
Moving around.
She's top-Heavy, so I'm making [Bleep.]
sure this is a good one.
I hope I make it across the Scales.
They might not [bleep.]
let me Go across the scales.
With his heavy Cargo in tow Hugh heads for the weigh Station where, last season, he Had his share of run-Ins.
You're gonna get a citation Today.
Just trying to figure out where All these violations are here.
Here, I'm gonna slip him a Oh, they want to strip-Search me All the time.
The guy's in love with me in There.
Every time I have to go across There, they check my truck out, Check my papers out, check my Ass out.
Everything.
Holy [bleep.]
.
Weigh station's closed.
I'm getting off lucky.
And there's vehicles there.
They must be just getting ready To open it up.
I can't believe I made it.
Chalk one up for The polar bear.
But with this load, beating the Law out of town is the least of Hugh's problems.
The old girl's gonna have a Workout today.
Biggest challenge is spinning Out on the hill.
Spinning out coming up.
Breaking loose going down.
That's the biggest challenge Pulling a heavy load like this.
Northbound on the roller Coaster.
It's all clear, hugh.
It's all clear.
Could be a bad deal here.
I'm feeling every one of them Especially when she just spins a Little bit.
Come on, baby.
Come on, baby.
That was [bleep.]
close.
I love that [bleep.]
hill.
Nice, short, and [bleep.]
steep.
I don't think there's anything Better than getting your [bleep.]
Heart pumping a little bit.
I like it.
That's one major Hill down.
But with alex 60 miles in front Of him and a 45-Ton trailer Behind him, hugh's load count Could be in jeopardy.
No, I got a late start, but I'll catch up.
It takes a long time to catch Up, but I'll catch up.
Further north on The bettles trail, jack is Plotting his trip across the jim River.
So I'm at the fork in the Road.
I got two choices to make.
With a moving Current underneath, river ice is Unpredictable and jack has to Choose his path carefully.
If I make 'em right Put my chains on and I drive Through it, I get my freight Delivered.
Make the wrong choice I fall through the ice.
I'm not gonna second guess Myself.
I'm just gonna do it.
But even then, some of 'em are Some of 'em are just guesses.
I think we're about to have some Fun.
Got to ease on good.
Okay.
Come on.
I better not get stuck.
I don't even think a wrecker Will come out here and get me Out if that's the case.
Come on, baby.
Oh! Jack's 35,000-Pound Rig breaks through the top layer Of ice.
Come on.
Come on.
You can do it.
Come on.
Okay.
Come on.
Finally, jack makes It to the other side.
There's water running out, But I'm gon' have to say that Was a good decision.
I think it was safer putting the Chains on and drive straight Through it.
It all worked out good.
Back on the Dalton Slick roads mean trouble for Lisa kelly.
The sun's shining, the Wind's blowing and those are Some good signs that it's gonna Be slippery.
She's approaching One of the steepest drop-Offs.
The beaver slide.
The beaver slide is, like, a Really steep downhill grade and It's straight and it's long and, You know, if it's slippery on There, it could be a really Long, fast ride down.
Northbound beaver slide.
You got the whole weight of the Load pushing you down this hill.
There's more chances of missing Gears and, you know, going too Fast and getting out of control Down it.
Come on.
Now we're at the bottom.
I think we survived it.
Two hours later Alex continues his charge north, Making good time over his rival.
I got a reasonable lead on Hugh today.
He's behind me.
I like to take advantage of this Time right and if I don't, then I'll regret not getting the Extra load or two.
But the slippery Road is about to put alex to the Test.
He approaches the long, steep Climb of koyukuk.
I don't think this looks Really that good.
There really is nothing here To grab on.
It's pretty well icy.
We're just trying to power our Way up there.
Soon as it spins, we're done.
We're moving very slowly.
We're going around five miles an Hour.
If alex loses any More momentum, he risks sliding Back down the hill.
And in a 44,000-Pound rig, it's A trucker's worst nightmare.
Well, we had to start taking A couple gears here to speed Things up.
Whoa, baby.
Holy mackerel.
Nearing the top of Koyukuk Whoa, baby.
Alex's truck is Stalled and sliding backwards Down the hill.
Uh-Oh.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Nothing a little Like a little bit of excitement.
After a 100-Foot Backslide, he catches a patch of Gravel and gets some traction.
Now on firmer footing Alex gives the hill one more Shot.
We'll just start out in a Little higher gear.
Try that.
We're okay now.
We're up the 20.
We'll make her over the top now.
Just have to worry about the Next time I mess up.
Maybe next year again.
Road, greg boadwine is Southbound hauling the eight-Ton Man lift he rescued in the Night.
It's his first oversized load And a big change from the pipe He usually hauls.
A trailer like this is Completely new to me.
I've never hauled one of these.
That's actually wider than the Truck by a substantial amount.
I'm really paying attention to Everything a lot closer, Especially when it comes to Meeting somebody.
That's the only thing I'm really Concerned about.
And when I say, "really Concerned," I am extremely Concerned.
Pretty close.
Hauling an Extra-Wide trailer through Oncoming traffic takes skill and Precision.
On a narrow stretch of roa The driver is forced dangerously Close to the center.
But if he doesn't allow enough Space, disaster.
That extra foot off each Side, I'm definitely wondering About 'em.
It'll be a foot closer to the Guy And a foot closer to the ditch, So.
I don't know.
Makes the road a lot more Narrow.
Got one, two, three trucks Coming ame.
Right now, I am gonna be in a Nasty little spot.
Son of a [bleep.]
.
My unexpected challenges so far.
Learn as I go, take each mile At a time, and hopefully pick up A little bit knowledge along the Way.
Keep on truckin'.
Jack jessee is closing in on Bettles.
Starting to push some hours Here.
It's starting to get later.
Ugh.
I really don't remember it being That rough.
I'm just hoping I'm gonna get Offloaded and back out here Tonight.
Gate to the arctic national park And preserve.
National wildlife refuge.
That's who's supposed to get This stuff, so I don't know if Anybody's gonna be there now Though.
It's evening time.
The lights are on, but nobody's Home.
Well, this is a dilemma.
Going over to the lodge, I Guess.
Tell me where somebody is.
It's not that big of a town.
It's good if I can find somebody To get my trailer offloaded.
Uh, yeah, we can get her on The phone too.
Dad, where'd those two guys Come? Yeah, these guys just brought A bunch of pipe in from Fairbanks What are these Over the road.
Dad, what are they doing? Oh, just truckin'.
As the ranger takes Off to track down the loader, Jack gets busy dropping his Load.
Can you come here a second? Can you tell me how bad I just Busted my head wide open? In the isolated Town of bettles, jack jesse just Took a shot to the head.
Ah! Jack's hand Slipped, and the 15-Pound iron Winch bar cracked him on the Forehead.
Can you tell me how bad I Just busted my head wide open? You all right? My bar just popped me in the Head.
Okay.
All right.
He banged his head, I'll be Right back.
Stay tight.
They're gonna wanna film this Too.
You can quit now, amos.
Should've had a hard hat on.
I don't wanna drip blood all Over this floor.
Can we step outside? Yeah, let's have a look.
Okay.
You ready? Yeah.
Yeah, you have a hole there.
Nice little hole? The way it was bleeding, I Figured it was a nice little Hole.
But what we ought to do is Really? At least get you sitting Down, get your feet up, get some Snow and some ice.
Back on the haul Road With 90,000-Pounds of cable in Tow, hugh is charging over the Dalton's steep hills.
Another good bingo.
My god, we're knocking 'em off One-By-One.
Determined to catch Alex, hugh hasn't stopped once To chain up.
Been lucky today.
Every shift is a potential And now it's his Turn to climb koyukukthe Incline that sent alex sliding Backwards.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Here we come, girls.
It's a hard approach you got, Uh A curve there, you got a bridge There, and, uh And you gotta get past the Guard rail before you hit any Kind of stuff that you can get Any traction on.
Everything okay there, Northbound? Yeah, I just spun out up here At the top.
You can come on by.
Here I come.
Pushing my [bleep.]
luck here on Some of these hills today.
I was spinning on lots of them.
But I thought, "one more to go, [Bleep.]
it.
I can make her.
" You [bleep.]
.
She tangled up [bleep.]
.
Hugh's back on the Move.
Just a ten-Minute glitch, That's all.
Well, 20-Minuteten to put on, Ten to take off.
But he's lost time And a chance of catching alex on This run.
Over in bettles, jack is Back on the job I've got a ding in my head, Man, be careful.
With a bandaged Head and a bruised ego.
It's nothing.
It's not a big deal, it's Nothing.
Uh-Uh.
Just got in too big of a hurry.
Should've had my hard hat on, And I ended up gettinggetting A little overzealous on it, and My winch bar came and popped me In the side of the head.
Mother[bleep.]
.
Just went right back to work, And got the job done.
I don't wanna take my hat off Now.
Show my big [bleep.]
bandage.
Greg boadwine is also getting The job done.
All I've got left here are a Couple downhills.
Just taking them easy.
On a mission to Rescue an abandoned 15-Ton Manlift, greg is only a few Miles away from hauling his Oversized load into fairbanks.
It's a good way to learn.
I mean, I don't like to learn The easy way.
I'd rather get thrown right in The mix and have to learn.
I will definitely be able to go Home tonight feeling pretty Satisfied, a little reassured.
This is a personal and Professional success for me.
And I'll take what I can get Right now.
Just been a hell of a good day.
Coming up, alex Makes his move.
Just wanna get going, because It'd be nice to pass hughie.
Come on, baby! But the polar bear Has other ideas.
I've got the polish Icebreaker in my sights, and I'm Gonna take him down.
On the shores of The arctic ocean, alex has Completed the first half of his Planbeating hugh to prudhoe Bay.
And now the question is, will There be a backhaul? Okay.
We got Uh, some crated motors and Turbine-Type stuff out there For you.
Oh, great.
Nice to have an actual load Going back for a change.
This one will even The score with hugh.
You see our friend, the brown Bearor polar bear? Not yet.
He must be still hibernating In coldfoot.
I wanna get going because it'd Be nice to pass hughie And wave to him going the Opposite direction.
But as alex hits The road, all he can do is pray Hugh will be too late to get a Backhaul.
But ten minutes later Hey, randy.
How you doing, sir? Good, good.
Good.
It's a dedicated reefer van.
They really wanna get this out.
Ready to roll.
All right, there you go, sir.
Okay.
Thanks, randy.
Holy [bleep.]
! I'm too [bleep.]
fat to get in Here.
I think alex is about ten Minutes ahead of me, so I got my Foot duct taped to the floor.
I figure I'll catch him on the First [bleep.]
hill here.
Back in the prudhoe Yard, lisa will be finished with Her run as soon as she drops The load.
Oh, this ain't gonna work.
But once again, Lisa's struggling with frozen Gear.
This sucks, I can't move it.
I'm never gonna get this down.
It's the hardest part of this Job, is windingFrozen landing Gear.
Hey, randy, it's lisa.
Yeah, how you doing? Good.
I'm over at 100% pad, trying to Drop this pipe, and I cannot get My landing gear to work.
So I was wondering if I could Drop it on blocks of wood, And if you have any blocks of Wood over there? Sure.
The yard crew comes To her rescue.
That close enough? That will work.
Ah.
It's ridiculous.
And lisa chalks up Load number nine.
Unfortunately yeah, it's part Of working up here is this cold Weather, and struggling and Fighting equipment, and just Having a hard time getting it Done.
Come on, baby! The polar bear is In hot pursuit of his rival, Alex.
Whoo-Ha! Here we go.
The lucky backhaul Will put hugh back in the race For first place, with 11 loads, And keep him one-Up on alex.
But hugh isn't satisfied just Staying ahead of alex on the Load board.
He's out to pass him on the road Too.
I'm gonna take him down.
He'll [bleep.]
his pants, I know He will.
He don't even know I'm back Here, I don't think.
Uh-Oh, this doesn't look too Good.
And a loose strap On alex's trailer may be just The break hugh's been waiting For.
I'm gonna hit the top of the Next hill, I'm gonna stop and Make sure the straps haven't Been cut or anything.
I'm a little concerned about it.
Ah, what the heck? This one here looks a little Cockeyed.
Okay.
Alex is right here, he just Pulled out [bleep.]
right in Front of me.
Ah, crap.
How's it going, alex? He won't talk now.
He won't [bleep.]
say a word now.
That's priceless.
He's mad now.
What'd he do? Hide around the corner, peeking Around? Guys like hugh just bring the Worst out in me, you know? And just all I wanna do is beat Him at anything he does.
Every time I pass alex I'm Happy.
Ah, he'll never catch me now.
No [bleep.]
possible way.
Not even in his own mind he Can't catch me.
On the next Ice Road Truckers Tempers flare.
Dirty rotten no-good.
Dragging that strap again.
Lisa and hugh are In a tug-of-war with their Loads.
Tell them to stuff it up Their ass if they try to blame me for it.
