Falling Skies s04e11 Episode Script

Space Oddity

The Espheni power core, was never on Earth in the first place.
Previously on Falling Skies We're gonna have to figure out a way to get up there, blow that son of a bitch up.
The Beamer will lock onto the Espheni homing beacon and fly to the Moon base.
That Beamer's on a one-way ticket.
I should've known When they announced the draw, you'd find a way to go.
We don't know what we don't know.
Maybe Lexi will come back.
Maybe she's not too far gone.
You won't be able to control her for much longer.
Something's coming.
Beamers! Hello, father.
Lexi? What the hell are you doing here? I came back to talk to you.
There is so much I need to explain.
Everybody, get back to cover! Dad.
For all we know, the Espheni could be right behind her.
Roger that.
Positions, everybody! What the hell you doing, Mason? Take it easy, Pope.
I'll handle this situation.
Y-you'll handle it? Two weeks ago, we were 200 strong.
We're now down to about 20.
And she's the one responsible.
We back off Until he's had a chance to gauge if she's a threat.
If?! You gonna talk to her? How about put her down Before she takes us all out? Make sure that he doesn't do anything stupid.
Mission impossible.
Be careful, the both of you.
Yeah, yeah.
It's so good to see you both.
I I came to apologize, to tell you you were right.
Trusting the Espheni was a terrible mistake.
That's quite an understatement.
Your eyes -- they're different.
They're the way they were before the cocoon.
And I can see clearly now.
For the first time, I know what I need to do.
The Espheni are monsters.
I want to help you destroy them.
Yeah, well, it's not that simple.
You left us to join them, you said they were your family, you killed Lourdes -- And there isn't a moment that I'm not sick over what I did.
Look, when I first came out of the cocoon, I was so confused.
I thought I was helping Lourdes, freeing her from the pain she'd suffer when the attack came.
This isn't just about her.
Look around you.
We were devastated by that attack! Those of us who survived hold you responsible.
I am, so, please, please, let me make it up to you.
What do you think you're doing? What Mason doesn't have the guts to do himself.
You're gonna put that rifle down, or I'm gonna take it from you.
Look, in case you hadn't noticed, that is the enemy over there.
The Espheni plan to use me as their weapon.
Let me be your weapon and end this war.
How, Lexi? How can we let you back into our lives? We can't.
We can't.
Damn it, Colonel, those soldiers in the 2nd Mass -- we may not have started out as the best of friends, but I fought alongside those people.
I suffered with them in that godforsaken ghetto, and for what? So that crazy, psycho alien bitch could wipe them out? Unh-unh.
When you came out of that thing, I made a promise that I would stop you if you tried to hurt anybody, and I didn't do it.
I'm not making that mistake again.
You're not thinking clearly.
This is complicated.
What's complicated about the graves I dug, Colonel -- the women and children I put in the ground? I understand that.
Let's just take it easy.
Come for a walk with me.
Come on.
I'm sorry, Cap.
Son of a Hey, Pope! Don't do it! Pope, don't do it! Give me that damn gun! Get down here.
They have no reason to be afraid.
No, but they got plenty of reasons to hate you.
Case in point.
There's no place for you here -- not anymore.
I'm sorry.
Dr.
Kadar had no definitive proof she wasn't being controlled by the Espheni.
How do you know this isn't some kind of Espheni ploy? Okay, but why would she destroy the Beamers? I don't know.
Doesn't really matter.
There's no guarantee somebody else isn't gonna try to kill her.
You up for that circus? Okay, I know what you're feeling.
We're in uncharted territory, but let me suss this out.
Let me if there's something left of our daughter over there.
I will keep her away from the others.
Keep her away from me.
Will you go keep an eye on Anne and Lexi for me? Got it.
Watch yourself.
Figured you'd show up sooner or later.
What you just did -- Too far, huh? Crossed the line? Somebody needed to do something! Too many people have died.
I-I can't stand the thought of -- of any more -- What is that? An excuse? That doesn't give you the right.
Oh, I think it does.
I can't stop seeing faces, Mason.
All the dead and buried -- I can't stop seeing their faces.
Well, there's a price you pay for caring about somebody other than yourself.
That's funny.
Sara used to tell me that I actually cared about your people.
Your people -- not just my people.
Yours as much as anybody else's.
I guess you are -- were -- my people.
Know what your problem is, Mason? You can't see the forest through the trees, man -- not when it comes to family.
We both know that your mouth masks a lot of damage.
But what you did today, that was leaping over the line.
I'm not gonna let that happen again.
My family.
My problem.
You stay the hell out of it.
What's she doing here, Dad? She's had a change of heart.
You believe her? I don't know.
But you're gonna let her come back after what she did? For the time being.
But what if she's all messed up like Mira was? Then we'll deal with her the way that we would deal with any threat.
Look The launch got scrapped when she showed up.
Back on now.
We leave in an hour.
There are too many unknown variables on this mission.
Yeah, well, that's why I stayed up late and reread "Space Flight for Dummies" last night.
Look, Cochise, it's -- it's a long shot.
We knew that going in.
But this is where the Espheni's advanced technology works in our favor.
I mean, this ship is light-years ahead of anything that we've got, with the automated life support and the homing signal.
All I really need to do is fly straight up.
Right? So, why do you seem so agitated? I would be more comfortable if I were accompanying you.
Well, so would I.
But this ship is allergic to Volm technology.
If the Espheni hadn't built their Beamers to literally reject you, you'd be warming up the copilot seat as we speak.
There is another option.
What? I have been trying to send messages to my father on our subspace communicator.
Yeah.
As yet, he has not answered, but please hold the launch long enough for him to do so.
If the greater Volm are within range, they could offer immeasurable support.
No, we can't afford to hold the launch.
We have no way of knowing if the power core is guarded or not.
If my father receives these messages, and if he chooses to respond, he could run interference.
What do you mean, if he chooses to respond? Why wouldn't he choose to respond? Excuse me.
Is there something you're not telling me? My father and I did not part well, Tom Mason.
He insisted that I leave with him, that Earth was a lost cause.
I-I refused.
I told him I would find the power core and I would destroy it on my own.
Are you telling that you and your team and Shaq -- you guys are all we've got? Well, I'm sorry, but unless you can give us some proof that your dad's gonna help us, I think we need to proceed as planned.
You're worried about the variables? Help me strap down the bombs.
Lexi, take a seat on the bed.
I need a couple minutes alone with her.
Pope took a cheap shot at her, there's a lot of people with grudges, and I'm not gonna let anything happen to either one of you.
Okay.
Thank you so much, Mom.
I -- Stop playing games.
I'm not in the mood.
Games? I-I don't understand.
Appealing to my maternal instinct doesn't change the fact that I can't trust you.
You could be under Espheni control.
They can't control me.
That's why they're afraid of me.
When you killed Lourdes, your friend, they weren't controlling you then? I was confused.
I -- I thought it was sparing her from a painful death.
Now I understand how twisted that logic was, but in that moment, I I'm sorry.
No, I wasn't under their control.
It was my own decision.
Lexi.
I made a choice between my human family and my Espheni family.
Don't call those monsters family.
I wanted peace so badly that I believed their lies.
And I believed yours! I searched for you, Lexi.
When I lost you, I would've gone to the ends of the earth to find you, to find a way for us to be together -- a family.
But you -- you betrayed all of that! Now I know that's never gonna happen -- not now, not after what you did.
I know how badly I violated your trust.
So please, please, let me make it up to you.
I'm your best chance if you want to make it to the power core and destroy it.
How do you know about that? When I was with the Espheni, I-I learned how to control my abilities.
I -- I -- it's hard to explain.
You better try.
It's like I can see energy, manipulate it, all of it -- gravity, radio waves, electrical charges.
And if I'm close enough, I can access the Beamer systems.
I can control them.
No, we can't afford to hold the launch.
We have no way of knowing if the power core is guarded or not.
I can hear the conversation on the ship -- the Volm and dad.
They're preparing a bomb you've built.
Stop that! Don't do that! Is that why you're here? No.
Did the Espheni send you to spy on us? No.
No, no! I promise.
Please.
I'm telling the truth.
I rejected my Espheni father.
I want to help.
The bomb you built may be powerful enough to make it to the power core and destroy it, but you'd have to get it there first.
You may have managed to get that Beamer airborne, but to fly it to the moon and back? If you attempt this without my help, you'll die trying.
Anne, if she knows about the Beamer, then we don't -- Dan, please! Please.
I knew I had to come back.
This is the reason.
I can fly the Beamer, defend it if it's attacked.
I should be the one going on this mission.
Please, please, don't sacrifice any more than you already have.
No.
No, Lexi.
You have made your choices, and there's no coming back from them.
And I'm your mother, and I will always love you, and I pray every day that you find your place in this world.
But it isn't here -- not with us, not now.
Tom was right.
You need to leave.
Anne, we need to talk now.
Dan, this isn't the time.
Now is the time.
I think you and Tom are making a huge mistake.
About what? About your daughter.
Tom.
Where's Lexi? Anthony's keeping an eye on her so she can stay alive long enough for us to talk about the situation.
What's the situation? Just hear him out.
Lexi has made an offer that I think it'd be shortsighted not to consider.
What's the offer? To go on the mission with you instead of Ben.
Huh.
You're on board with that? I think it's something we should consider, yeah.
She just took down those Beamers, Tom.
She just heard you and Cochise talking inside of ours.
She's not Jeanne, okay? Your daughter held on to her humanity with every fiber.
Ours didn't.
Okay, you're right.
She was a willing participant.
She admitted it.
But does that change the fact that she is our best chance -- maybe our only chance? I understand that emotions are raw.
I understand that.
But this is war.
We can't think with our hearts.
We got to think with our heads.
Remember when the allies had to team up with Stalin in order to defeat Hitler? They knew that joining forces, even with you joining forces with a monster, would be -- Yeah, to win the war, but we don't need her.
We've already done our homework.
Unless the power core is heavily guarded or we encounter something else unexpected.
I mean, having someone that can operate the machinery just might make the difference.
Yes.
I mean, we can't argue the fact that Lexi's abilities give her an edge that none of us have.
Are you not even willing to entertain that idea? Ben and I have been over every step of this mission.
I've seen him in pressure situations before.
I know how he'll respond.
Okay, so you're afraid of her? I'm afraid of myself around her.
I'm afraid that I'm not gonna make the right call.
I-I don't know her.
And none of it matters.
This is our hail Mary.
Throw all that out.
It's simple.
It's just a choice, Tom.
Listen, maybe you're right.
Maybe I'm Letting my emotions cloud my judgment.
I should make this decision on a purely tactical, logical basis.
I-I don't know.
Yeah, when you weigh it all out, she's the best person for it.
All right, Lexi goes.
Ben stays.
Hope to God we're right.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
It's more out of necessity than choice.
Hey, what's that? It's bad luck not to christen a ship on its maiden voyage.
I think we may be a little past luck, but thank you.
Hey, listen, I don't care how powerful they say you are -- if you hurt my dad, I'll find a way to make you pay.
This isn't fair.
We had a lottery.
I know.
If it was fair, I'd be teaching second-period American history right now.
This is the way it has to be.
Ben, I -- There's nothing to say, Lexi.
I can think of a few choice words.
Yeah, I want to thank you for being the first and last I ever let tell me who I'm supposed to be.
You know, it's a real shame that Lourdes was the only one among us who might have been able to find a place in her heart to forgive you.
I'll hold you to your word.
I want you both to come back in one piece.
I'll try my best.
No trying, kid.
Get it done.
Come here a second.
I, uh got this serum from the Volm.
They carry it on them in case they get captured by the Espheni.
It's a fast-acting poison.
Now, if that's strong enough to take down a Volm before it can regenerate, might be able to kill a hybrid.
Just think of it as an insurance policy.
Let's hope I won't need it.
Mm.
Oh, godspeed.
I can't breathe! We should clear the atmosphere in a few moments.
I've adjusted the linear-acceleration burn.
We should mimic the earth's gravity.
If we're out of the atmosphere, we should be able to detect the homing beacon.
I've found the signal and engaged autopilot.
Nothing more to do now but wait.
You still don't trust me, do you? Why don't you ask me that question when we're on the way home? How long until we get there? One moment.
This map will allow us to view the ship's course in relation to the nearest celestial bodies.
Is something wrong? No.
That thing you're doing with your hair -- your mother does that sometimes.
Um, let's go over the checklist again.
The homing beacon is engaged.
When we reach our destination, I'll switch it off and let the core's landing protocol draw us in.
And then we drop the bomb, blow up the power core, and you fly this ship home manually.
Yeah.
And it's important that we conserve power because the return trip's on a battery charge? Half charge on the battery should be enough to get us home.
Are we forgetting anything? It's nothing -- I mean, nothing to do with the ship, anyway.
It's just This is the longest conversation we've ever had.
It's not really the time or the place to get to know each other.
We're on a mission.
I think we should stick to it.
Right.
It's getting colder in here.
Why is that? Let me check life support.
The outer hull -- there appears to be a hairline fracture.
Uh, we did some minor repairs.
Takeoff may have worsened the tear.
Life support is making up for the leak, but causing us to drain energy at a much faster rate than we should.
Can we fix it? From outside of the ship, with the right tools, but here, now -- no.
No, I mean, we could return home No.
No, come on.
Make repairs, and try again.
Come on! There's got to be some other way around this! If we can't get outside and repair the damage, then there's got to be another way to take the strain off of the life support.
Unless we lower it to a minimum, this will be a one-way trip to the moon.
And even if we turn the ship around, there's no guarantee that we could repair the breach in the hull.
There's got to be another way.
There is one other option, a way to insulate us from the cold, um, organically.
Well, good.
That sounds good.
Wait, you mean like the thing in Chinatown? A cocoon, yes.
No, no.
This will be different than before.
Cocoons are used by the Espheni for stasis, protection against the elements during long journeys.
You mean like a cocoon to protect us from the cold? And lack of oxygen.
I'll be able to hear the automated landing protocol from inside of the cocoon as we approach our destination.
At that point on, I'll restart life support and let landing protocol take over.
It's our only chance of survival.
The cold -- it -- it doesn't bother you? I can regulate my body temperature, but only to a point.
I'll have to cocoon myself, too -- and soon.
What is that? Protein.
Amino acids.
Honestly, it would take too long to explain.
Hold still.
No, wait, wait.
How am I gonna breathe? The substance I'm secreting is oxygen-rich.
It'll enter your lungs and nourish you.
But you have to let it in.
It'll be like no time at all has passed.
When we wake up, we'll simply be there.
Okay.
Now, just breathe deeply.
That's what you said to Lourdes right before Did I? How strange.
Wait.
Sweet dreams, father.
Tom! Can you hear me?! Tom! We're gonna get you out of there! Hey, Dad! Dad! Stay with us! You okay? Yeah.
Hang in there.
Stay with us.
You all right? Here.
Oh.
Oh, oh.
There you go.
Take it easy.
Yeah.
Oh, god.
Are you okay? Where am I? What happened? You made it back.
You're back.
What do you mean, back? What -- what -- what happened to your arm? I'm fine.
So is Lexi.
W-where's Lexi? What happened? She wanted to be here when you woke up, but she's been through so much.
Hey, what -- are you repairing the breach to the hull? How much time did we lose?! It's over! Lexi did it.
Did what?! I don't understand! Hey, hey, hey, hey, whoa.
The mission.
All right? It's over.
Yeah.
It's over.
All right? Come here.
We'll show you.
Just take it easy.
A day after you left, there was a massive explosion on the Moon.
Power core? That crater is where it used to be.
Lexi detonated the bomb.
And just in the nick of time.
That scorched Overlord sent in a whole group of troops.
There was a whole wave of skitters trying to soften us up.
We were about out of ammo, had nowhere to run to.
And a skitter took me down, but Hal fought it off, stopped the bleeding.
The right place at the right time.
Well, if Lexi hadn't blown up the power core when she did, none of us would be here.
Once he saw that the power supply had been cut, that Espheni turned tail and ran.
So Lexi never got me out of the cocoon at all? No, she did it on her own.
She docked the Beamer, she set the bomb, and flew you back before the battery charge ran down.
She did it, Tom.
I know, right? Where's Lexi now? I want to talk to her.
Come on.
Let's go.
What happened to her? I'll let her tell you.
Lexi.
Wake up.
I wanted to be there when you woke up.
Last thing I remember, you were putting me in a cocoon.
The life-support strain on the batteries was worse than I thought.
I couldn't risk waking you, or we'd never have made it back.
When the bomb exploded, the power core melted down, and, well, we were caught in the radiation blast wave.
You look so different now -- your hair.
Yeah, it's like radiation therapy attacking cancer cells.
Her Espheni DNA seems to have been flushed out of her system.
I-I can't hear them in my mind anymore.
For the first time since I was a little girl, I I feel normal.
Dad! Hello.
Ben.
You brought him back in one piece.
It's not enough.
It won't ever be enough.
I'll spend the rest of my life making up for what I did to Lourdes, deserting the 2nd Mass.
No, that doesn't matter.
You're one of us.
You're family.
Where's everybody else? Where's Weaver? Where's Maggie? Well, the colonel's got everybody mobilized to take advantage of the Espheni's loss of power.
Don't worry.
He's gonna want to talk to you.
In a minute.
In a minute.
Got a shortwave up and running.
Been hearing from resistance groups all up and down the East Coast.
Without power from the core, all the ghetto walls have fallen.
The Espheni plans for us have come to a halt.
What about our old friend, that scorched Overlord? He's pulling back to his stronghold.
For the first time, a fair fight.
Well, how do we know that he's not just pulling back, regrouping, and about to launch a major counteroffensive? How do we know that the tide hasn't turned and that this just may be a winnable war? I'm just saying we should be cautious.
Let's scope it out, and if everything is as it seems We press our advantage.
You're quiet.
I can't believe I'm actually looking at the light at the end of the tunnel.
I've dreamt about this day a thousand times over.
After everything we've been through, we deserve a little joy in our life.
Lexi, can I talk to you alone? Yeah, I just think we need to clear the air.
I know you're angry at me, Maggie, and you have every right to be.
Maybe I do, but at least I'm alive and angry and not a pissed-off corpse.
And I have you to thank for that, so I guess that's what I'm saying.
Thanks for that.
Where's Pope? It's not like him to miss a party.
Um, he left right after the launch of the Beamer.
No one has seen him since.
He left? Mm-hmm.
For real? What's going on over there? We just got word.
Dingaan and Hal's attack on the scorched Overlord's stronghold was a success -- a few fighters wounded, but no casualties.
What do you mean, attack? I never authorized an attack.
This was just in the planning stages this afternoon.
Weaver must have given it the go-ahead.
That doesn't sound like him.
Why would he do that? Well, you can ask him yourself.
Time to bring out the good stuff -- what's left of it, anyway.
What is this about an attack? We never pulled the trigger on that.
Hal made the call.
He knew that if you knew it was on, you'd insist on going.
He wasn't wrong, was he? Wipe that look off your face, Mason.
You've got so used to losing, you don't know what it's like to win anymore.
Listen.
I need your undivided attention.
Yeah? And just don't say a word.
Just come with me.
Mm.
Hey, don't you think that was weird the way that Weaver just blew me off? Well, he was excited.
We all are.
Is it so wrong to want to celebrate? No.
It's not.
Mm.
That stronghold that Hal attacked today, that was 30 miles away, right? Mm-hmm.
So How did they get there so quickly? Um, the militia troops that Dingaan connected with had transport.
Oh.
That's convenient.
It's perfect.
It's too perfect.
It's too perfect.
It's too perfect, it's too perfect, it's perf-- What? Doesn't add up.
The war is coming to an end.
For the first time in I don't know how long, there is no mission to be planned, no lives that need to be saved, no command decisions to be made.
Lexi did it.
Her dream of peace is finally coming true.
She did it, Tom.
Yeah.
And then I heard your voice When you pulled me out.
Mm-hmm.
If you pulled me out.
What is that supposed to mean? This doesn't feel real.
What? Okay, I'm not real? I don't feel like I'm -- I mean, I know the feeling.
I feel like I'm here, but I don't think -- I-I don't feel like I'm here.
I know I'm here, but I don't feel like it.
Okay, all right, all right.
Why don't you sit down? Feelings of disassociation this strong could be a sign of severe PTSD.
No, no, no, no.
Okay.
Hey! I-I just want to talk to Lexi.
I want to -- All right, I'll bring her.
Just -- Tom, just relax.
Okay, sit down, okay? Okay.
I will bring her.
I'll go see if I can find Kadar, huh? Kadar? Yeah.
He's far more knowledgeable about stress disorders.
Kadar is dead, Anne.
You know that.
Lexi doesn't know that.
This is all Lexi.
She's doing this.
Why is she doing this? What does she want from me?! I'm gonna -- I'm gonna go get help.
What does she want from me, Anne?! Anne! Lexi! Lexi! Lexi! Lexi, wait! Dan.
Dan, wait! Where is she? She won't talk to you.
You're not real.
None of this is real.
This is all part of a dream.
Lexi, why are you doing this?! Bigger question is, why are you? It's not like you to give up on family, Tom.
I want to talk to Lexi, Dan.
She don't want to talk to you.
She's too scared.
What's she afraid of? What'll happen when you wake up.
What? That the mission will fail? No.
That it won't.
Why would she be afraid to succeed? I don't get that.
You don't get it 'cause you're seeing red.
If anybody understands what you're going through, Tom, it's me -- to have your daughter twisted by the Espheni.
But I didn't give up on mine.
I never gave up on her.
And you can't give up on yours.
You got to make things right with her.
Accept her for who she is.
I-I won't accept this.
Wait, wait, wait! Aah! You got to get us out of here, Lexi, now! Do you ever get tired of barking orders? Come on.
What is this? What's with all the games? Do you really need to ask that question, Dad? Lexi wants what all your children want when we've made a mistake.
What's that? An escape from reality or escape from responsibility? You're overthinking it.
How is it that the Espheni know Lexi better than her own father? That's hardly fair, Ben.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Take it easy on him, Ben.
All right? Cut him a little slack.
Why? He didn't cut Lexi any.
They messed with her just like they messed with us -- me with my spikes, you with those eye bugs, Matt at the school.
You saved me, dad.
You saved all of us.
But you couldn't save Lexi.
I was trapped in a prison camp.
She's your own flesh and blood.
She's just like us.
Is she not as important to you? Of course she is.
I took responsibility for what you did! Now you're trying to blame me for it?! You weren't there for her, Dad.
Where were you when she needed you? I tried my best to protect her.
Where were you, Dad?! You can't keep us here, Lexi! People are counting on us! Hello, Tom.
I'm sorry I never got a chance to say a proper goodbye.
Stop hiding behind all these faces, Lexi! Just come out and show yourself! She can't.
She's terrified, like I was when she took away my last breath.
Lourdes, you know Lexi better than anyone.
What does she have to be afraid of? She doesn't think you'll ever forgive her for killing me.
She lost you.
She lost Anne.
You'll never forgive her, never love her, no matter what she does.
She's lost her whole family.
She's all alone.
There's no coming back.
I understand, Lexi.
I understand what you want.
This isn't about the mission.
This is about me And Anne and your family.
And these faces -- Weaver and your brothers and now Lourdes -- you're hiding behind them because you're terrified that, no matter what you do, we'll never forgive you for what you've done.
Lexi will never be forgiven because my blood is on her hands.
How can I ask you to forgive me when I can't even forgive myself? I understand that this isn't a trick, that this is just a scared little girl who's afraid to wake up and face the cold light of day.
But whatever fears you have, we need to leave this place right now.
I don't know how to reverse this.
I didn't do it on purpose.
I put myself into stasis with you in the cocoon.
With me? You're in the cocoon with me? So we're dreaming together? Oh, I should've seen that from the beginning.
Successful mission, winning the war -- those are all things that I've desperately wanted, things that I've dreamt about.
What does it mean? All these people have made mistakes.
They all have regret.
And yet they can sit together.
They can break bread together.
There are so many things I wish I could go back and undo, and so many of them have to do with you.
I'm sorry that I let you down.
No, my biggest regret isn't that I trusted you.
It's that I couldn't forgive you.

You're one of us.
You're not one of them.
It's also proof that I need to try to find a way to forgive you.

Are you ready to do that? Yes.

I can show you.
Oh, my god.
We made it.
I'm the 25th human to visit the moon.
Which makes me the 26th.

That could just be the first.
First of what? Conversations between father and daughter.
It's time I got to know mine.
We're gonna make it, Dad.
I can feel it.
