Being Mary Jane (2013) s04e12 Episode Script
Feeling Conflicted
1 I broke up with Lee.
We had sex.
We both agreed it was a mistake.
Will you stop trying to produce the show from your living room.
They fired you.
I think she'll understand if you didn't tune in.
That director you had on the show, he was asking about you.
I'm not sure I wanna date a director to improve my Q rating.
I think it'll humanize you.
I tried it my way.
It didn't work.
I can't stand the thought of you with someone else.
Common wisdom says that this is a huge mistake.
- Let's not be common.
- Justin.
[cell phone buzzing.]
MARY JANE: [sighing.]
You're a snoozer.
I never snooze.
You're not a cuddler, either, are you? I made you some coffee.
Why are you so awake already? I love this time of the morning.
You mean night.
Sheesh.
JUSTIN: Okay - you see? - Hmm This is when the city is at its quietest.
You can see it come alive.
- And when the sun comes up - [kisses.]
you can see the light, and everything the light touches can be yours.
Did you just quote "The Lion King"? - [quiet laugh.]
- [laughs.]
- Okay, that's a great film.
- [kissing.]
[laughing.]
Okay, Mufasa, um - should we talk about - Hey, can you multitask? Yeah, 'cause your driver's gonna be here in 20 minutes.
So, are we riding in together or No.
No.
We should arrive at the studio separately.
Oh, so this is how we start in secrecy.
For now, but it's not how it stays.
And what is "this," exactly? JUSTIN: [sighing.]
It's all kind of fresh right now.
I don't know if I can answer that yet.
JUSTIN: We need ground rules.
I'll call you from the car.
[door opens, closes.]
JUSTIN: Rule one: work comes first.
Agreed.
Rule two: no more distractions, no more mistakes.
Definitely.
Rule three: we should be a united front on all decisions moving forward.
I think that'll make us stronger.
But we're gonna keep this a secret from everyone.
For now.
I take it that includes Kara.
We're kind of on shaking ground at work, so, not a good time to shake things up, right? Right.
So, we wait.
Are you gonna be okay with that? I guess I kinda have to be, right? All right.
- Well, Mary Jane - Yeah? um to answer your question about what this is This is you and me, you and me, only.
Go all night and work our asses off during the day, dominating this news thing until you're the top news anchor in morning television and and I'm your senior producer.
You're already a senior producer.
True, but I'll be "the" senior producer for "the" Mary Jane Paul whose name and face are on every billboard from Times Square to Los Angeles because I'm in your ear, and I'll see those same billboards from my corner office 'cause 'cause you have my back.
Until everything the light touches is ours.
JUSTIN: [laughs.]
All I'm saying is we have each other's back in all things.
That's what this is.
Okay.
I still think we need a label.
You really want me to say it? You know you want to.
You're my girl.
Are you happy? Oh, you want me to update my my Facebook page now.
You have Facebook? Yeah, you didn't get my friend request? EMMA: Did you hear about the changes to the internet Insta-Star segment? No, what's going on? Aaron's got Marnie the Dog today, I'm doing CutiePie, and you're taking Dani Hollins on Thursday.
Oh.
Wait, Mary Jane is interviewing Dani? She's got the most subscribers of them all.
You should be excited.
[drill whirring.]
- Garrett? - GARRETT: Hm? Why are they taking down Natalie's poster? Uh, I've been meaning to tell you guys about that.
She's out.
I thought she was on assignment in Topeka.
Well, she was, but the network decided to ax her.
- She wasn't testing well.
- Oh.
Have they found a replacement yet? Not yet.
You got anybody in mind? - Yeah, I do.
- Yeah.
Yeah, we do.
Uh, the back-up correspondent that we talked about - that would replace me - Yeah.
- if Emma fell through.
- Yeah.
Yeah, I remember.
Well, I'd be happy to take suggestions.
We need opinions from all, uh, demographics.
So, uh, who's your pick? - Denise Gagne.
- Brendon Bragg.
I need one pick you both like, and I need it in five minutes, or you don't get a say.
- Done.
- GARRETT: [clears throat.]
Brendon Bragg, really? I thought we talked about this.
Hold up.
Look, rule number one: we have to stay on the same page, so, let's just work this out.
Okay.
All right, we've got Denise.
She is my first choice.
Robert a little bit more experience.
Now, Cameron, he's got a fresh edge, which I actually think his youth is gonna be an asset.
JUSTIN: Mm-hmmm MARY JANE: What are you doing? Do you see what's going on here? They just fired Natalie.
Diversity isn't in and "GDU" is not gonna hire another Black correspondent.
They've already filled that quota.
Us two.
Look, they tried the diversity thing with you and Ronda and it didn't work.
But I can show them that it could be different this time.
It's bigger than you, Mary Jane.
It's no longer Obama's America.
The news is whitewashed.
Look what happened to your friend Tamron Hall.
She was leading in the ratings.
Right.
Yeah.
We've gotta play our cards right.
God, he's like the Grim Reaper now.
JUSTIN: Tell me about it.
But why now? I finally get here and now I've gotta deal with this bullshit.
I wanna be better than Ronda.
I wanna actually mentor Black talent.
Yeah, I'm sure she said the same thing when she started out.
Look, it's the system, all right, it's not you.
All right.
Well then let's go - with Lindsay Finkel.
- Why her? She's woke that's how my girl described her, and she's got charisma in spades.
Okay.
Brendon Bragg.
Right? Look, he's a buddy of mine out of J school, and absolutely killing it in the west coast market.
He's a fill-in reporter in a fifth-tier market.
With a lot of potential.
Yeah, the potential to be the perfect president of the Justin fan club.
No.
Look, what is good for me is good for both of us.
We need qualified journalists, Justin, not kiss-asses.
- Ken Botnam.
- Why's it gotta be a man? Why does it have to be a woman? Ken's coverage of the Women's March was amazing.
He's the type that will get guys to be interested in your stories.
Okay, please tell me you've made a decision.
- Lindsay Finkel.
- Ken Botnam.
GARRETT: [sighing.]
Okay, listen, um I'll interview them both and make a decision at the end of the week.
[clears throat.]
Thanks.
Well may the best White person win.
MARY JANE: OMG.
Did you see? Nene might be returning to "Real Housewives.
" Okay, if gossip from your favorite reality show cannot get you outta this funk, baby, I don't know what else I can do.
What's going on? [voice cracking.]
Darnell and I broke up.
What? When? I thought you guys were having a baby.
[voice cracking.]
So did I.
We had a surrogate and everything lined up.
So so, what happened? [sniffling.]
He got cold feet.
I knew something was up when he didn't show up to the lawyer's office to sign the surrogacy contract.
I get home and he's all moved out.
He left me some pathetic note, talking about "I'm sorry," and "I'll send for the rest of my stuff.
" He's a coward.
He served me with divorce papers.
Oh, baby I know it's not much of a consolation, but I was a wreck when I broke up with Lee, and then I remembered there are so many fish in the sea Better fish.
And, by better fish, do you mean the square-jawed, light-eyed, morning show producing species Justinious Talbotillus? You can't hide anything from an astute gay.
Obviously.
Okay, well, look, with Garrett second-guessing everything, I - I can't really - It's okay.
Your tea is safe with me.
Thank you.
And just know that, baby, I'm here for you, if you need me, okay? I really appreciate that.
So, Garrett told me that he's interviewing a reporter that you recommended for the correspondent spot.
Yeah, I think she's a shoo-in.
So, who are you thinking? Ah, Lindsay.
She's fantastic.
Great skills.
A natural talent.
You have my vote, for sure.
Good morning, I'm Aaron Felty.
And I'm Mary Jane Paul, and this is "Great Day USA.
" ORLANDO: Oh, man KARA: I'm not watching.
What time'd you get in last night, huh? - I know.
Gimme gimme - ORLANDO: Oh.
Child-proof locks can be kinda hard sometimes, can't they? Is your boy Marco this bad off? Oh that knucklehead always belts his back.
Well I need you to be clear and focused tonight, okay? I told Marco you were going with Mary Jane - for a girls' night.
- No, it's not a girls' night.
I'm inviting Lee over and you're all gonna help me prep for the second part of this arbitration.
- [groans.]
No - Yes.
I thought maybe we can role play.
Role play, huh? It's a double date, Orlando.
It's not an orgy.
I was gonna say homework, but okay.
This is my last chance to pull my case out of the fire, Papi.
Are you sure it's not an elaborate ploy to keep me from my boys? You should be thanking me.
I'm sparing you another night of destroying your liver, okay? - Gracias, Mami.
- Mm-hm.
- [kisses.]
- [laughs.]
FEMALE FLOOR DIRECTOR: And we're out.
I saw what you did there Trying to get Aaron to back your candidate.
It's not gonna work.
Look, I forgot that I have girls' night with Kara and now she wants me to bring Lee.
What am I gonna do? Come on.
[door lock clicks.]
I've gotta tell her.
She's my best friend.
I can't lie to her.
- And I suck at it.
- Then don't lie, okay? Just "delay" the truth.
No, stay silent.
People that lie tend to over explain.
Let her jump to her own conclusions.
That just flew right on out.
I mean, were you, like, a politician in a previous life or You just need some practice.
Act like I'm Kara.
Kara, the reason Lee isn't here is because Okay, we're not that kind of friends.
If you can keep a straight face while I do this [laughs.]
you're gonna be just fine.
Someone could come in.
Unh-unh, I locked the door.
You leave me careless JUSTIN: You were saying.
Kara, Lee and I broke up.
There.
So, um Is that all you got? Caught up in the bursting flame There's comfort in dyin' There's comfort in burning Maybe we should burn MARY JANE: [gasps.]
Maybe we should burn JUSTIN: Tell me about work.
MARY JANE: [gasps.]
There's this, uh, asshole, who's always trying to rattle me.
[gasps.]
JUSTIN: [kisses.]
What's his problem? [kissing.]
He only cares about ratings.
[laughing.]
And everybody keeps saying that Ronda's the new Oprah.
Oh, my [knock at door.]
- Hi, hon - Where's Lee? Lee's not coming.
Honey, what's wrong? We broke up.
KARA & ORLANDO: What?! - Yeah.
- ORLANDO: Are you serious? Oh, mmmmm I'm gonna get you two some wine.
Yeah.
Oh, honey, how did it happen? I mean, did you have an argument or something? - It was just a lot.
- Oh, baby.
Oh, gosh, aye, ai, ai.
Tell me what happened.
- There you go.
- Thank you, babe.
Thank you.
ORLANDO: Yeah.
KARA: Mm-hm? MARY JANE: Mmm.
Mm-hm.
Yeah, I was just I came home and he was gone, and, like, he all his stuff was gone.
He got cold feet.
I I I sensed something was off when he didn't show up to the fertility clinic to sign the contract.
You didn't mention that.
I came home and he left this pathetic note talking about, like, "I'm sorry" and "I'll send for my stuff.
" But he was just, like, a coward.
- Wait.
- You know? Yeah.
I just I Are we talking about Lee, Lee? Like, Lee Truitt, Lee? Mr.
Over-communicator, supersensitive Lee? Really? Really? - All of a sudden.
- What? Just it was just done.
Oh, honey, I'm so sorry.
It's gonna be okay, Mama.
[pats hand.]
Yeah, so my cousin, you know, he pretty much - has me runnin' the place.
- NIECY: Okay.
Yeah, so I can get you a mad discount.
All right, so, maybe I'll stop by.
So, this is what you meant by buying me a drink? [scoffs.]
Unbelievable.
So, what I can do is, I can just pay you back when we get to my place.
Back up.
Thank you.
This is ridiculous.
Niecy.
Where are you goin'? That brother was fine.
I'm not about to waste my time on guys like Dante anymore.
Come on, we paid way too much for a babysitter.
We're about to have some fun.
- You have fun.
- I'm tired of it.
Bye, Amika.
- Remember, lots of carbs.
- Right.
Thank you so much.
That's the best thing to get over a break-up.
- Right.
- You're tellin' me.
Yeah.
If this arbitration doesn't end soon, I'm gonna be 300 pounds the next time you see me.
Okay, then I'll call you "Big Papi Orlando.
" ORLANDO: [laughs.]
Sorry, you guys, about, you know, high jacking the arbitration prep with my problems.
Oh, honey, no, of course not.
Please, don't even worry about me.
Besides, I think I know what I've gotta do.
- Really? - Mm-hm.
- Really.
I'm gonna be fine - [cell phone buzzing.]
and you have so much on your mind.
- Yeah.
Okay.
- Yeah.
- [cell phone buzzing.]
- Are you gonna answer that? - What? - Your phone.
- Oh - That could be Lee.
- It could be work.
- Let me see.
Okay, well, look, if it's work, it could be, like, a violation of the arbi - Look and see.
- It could be Lee.
- Who is it? - Girl, it is Angelina Jolie.
What? Yeah, she's coming to do "GDU" tomorrow and she's got a ton of questions.
Angelina Jolie's gonna be on the show? - MARY JANE: Yes.
- ORLANDO: Wow.
- MARY JANE: With all the kids.
- What? - Yeah, I've got so much stuff.
- Let me go and deal with her.
All right, all right.
- It's not Lee.
- Love you.
[kisses.]
Yeah, well She's lying.
MARY JANE: I mean, are you worried that we're starting off on the wrong foot? I mean, how many lies do we have to tell before we [kisses.]
You're gonna have to trust me, okay? It's gonna be fine.
[kisses.]
- I do trust you.
- Do you? [kisses.]
I do.
It's just she's my best friend and I can't keep lying to her.
Can you focus on me Baby, can you focus on me, baby We will be discussing weight loss tips to help you get that summer bikini body you've always dreamed about.
She looks so happy.
My daughter has a thing for scandal, apparently.
Grandma, she's on morning television.
Her job is to be happy.
Call her and find out what's goin' on.
- Are you serious? - Yes, I'm serious.
If she stepped out on that nice British boy, it's got to be for a good reason.
when we return, on "Great Day USA.
" MALE FLOOR DIRECTOR: And we're clear.
[laughing.]
MAN: If we're all in attendance, shall we begin? - KARA: Nope.
- Excuse me? Ms.
Lynch is asking that you recuse yourself from these proceedings.
On what grounds? You've made several remarks that have no bearings on this case and show bias.
Like you commented on my presence at a private suite at a New York baseball game, you mentioned my boyfriend's occupation, and you made it a point to say something about my wearing a designer suit, so It's for these reasons we feel you're unfit to oversee this arbitration.
Goodbye.
- You killed it.
- Killed it.
No, no, no.
Okay, what's rule number one? This is your producer talking.
Okay, well, what if I wanted you to talk to me, like, you know Well then I'd probably say it like, uh Hey, MJ! MARY JANE: Hey! Wow! You look positive.
How'd it go? - I think I destroyed them.
- I mean, it's not over yet, but I think I have a fighting shot.
- Nice.
- Why don't we go to lunch and I'll fill you in on all the dirt? - I've got plans with Emma.
- Oh.
Well, cancel them.
I can't.
We're working on this whole internet Insta-Star story and we have to watch hours of videos before we interview them this afternoon.
This afternoon? I thought you were working on a morning show.
Yes, the Insta-Star segments are all web-exclusive livecasts, the wave of the future.
Oh, I think that's just an excuse for them to get you to do more work.
- You ain't never lied.
- Mm-hm.
Call me later.
- All right? - I will.
Cabrón.
Affirmative Action is a disease and it's affected this great country's - higher education - She say anything? [sighing.]
No, she's focused on arbitration, but I I can't take this much longer.
Whoa, what is this? Research.
If minorities aren't smart enough, or qualified enough to get into school or get themselves a job on their own, well then, guess what? Work someplace else.
I warned you that this was gonna incite you.
[laughing.]
I only looked to see how many views it got.
That was that was it.
I think her rant about Beyoncé was the most popular.
Me, personally, I didn't find it that incendiary.
Wha she said Beyoncé couldn't be a sex symbol and make political statements, yet this bitch wears black negligees and and dyes her hair daddy- doesn't-love-me platinum blond, all the while playing Sean Hannity at her parents' freakin' house, but expects us to listen to her politics.
You've gotta be freakin' kidding me.
Okay, the hypocrisy alone is uh, point taken.
- I got it.
I got it.
- JUSTIN: [laughs.]
Hey, check it out.
My pick for correspondent.
They've been in there talking for a while.
It can only be a good sign.
MARY JANE: Yeah, if stiff shoulders and curt head nods is an indicator of great conversation, yeah, no, totally.
Garrett's just playing hardball.
Mm-hm, did he look like that when he interviewed you? You know, if you had just backed him from the beginning, this would be going a different way.
So, now it's my fault that your candidate has a weak handshake.
Got it.
[knocks on window.]
Justin.
My office.
Yeah.
Okay.
I just got an earful from the brass upstairs about Kara's arbitration.
I heard it was going well.
It was, until Kara's lawyer had the arbitrator removed.
This is a business, okay? If we lose and have to pay her out, it affects the show's budget, and that affects the quality of what we do here.
Look, Kara didn't do her job.
It ain't pretty, but it's the truth.
Good.
That's exactly what I want you to say in your testimony tomorrow at Kara's arbitration.
- My testimony? - Mm-hm.
Garrett, I I don't think that's a Justin, you made this mess.
It's yours to clean up.
Do whatever it takes to make sure that Kara Lynch loses.
So, Dani, does the number 55 million ring any bells? I have a very strong fan base.
I mean, if your subscribers were a country, they'd be the 25th largest in the world.
I love each and every one of them.
Even JewHaterKKK69? JUSTIN: She walked right into that one.
Don't let her sweat for too long.
Well, obviously, I don't know all of them, but I do believe that everyone is entitled to their free speech.
Oh, right.
Well, it's funny that you say "free," because have you ever noticed that people with screen names like that, they usually prefer to be anonymous.
There's never any profile pictures, or it's a Confederate flag, or a bald eagle holding a machine gun.
But do you think they're too ashamed of their opinions to put their faces out there? Possibly.
Not everybody's as brave as me to speak their minds.
That's true, but not everyone - is as pretty as you are, either.
- Oh, thank you.
But, I digress.
I'd really hate to give any of those hate-mongers a platform they don't deserve, right? Well, so, tell me, how does a young woman from Plunkett City, Oklahoma build an empire like this? I speak to the regular people, the hard-working backbone of America We all know she's not talking about Black people, so the disenfranchised, the people who built this great country.
Now who would that be? I'm talking about the farm families, the preachers, the teachers, and the teamsters.
Really, anyone from the heartland, the working class.
Let's talk method.
You make it look so easy, Dani.
Those videos that that have made you a viral sensation, they're shot in your bedroom.
Tell me more? Those three-minute videos that you see are a product of working 15 hours a day, seven days a week, spent researching, fact-checking, writing and editing.
How much fact-checking goes into an opinion piece? Because that's what the videos are, after all, right? Your opinion.
A lot more than you would think.
I like to know as much as I can about a subject before I address it.
That can't leave you much time for anything else, can it? Are you kidding? I don't have a social life at all.
I can't even remember the last time I went on a date.
Well, that makes you a news widow.
Welcome to the club, Dani.
We'll be right back with more from "Great Day USA.
" Woo, holding back on her was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life.
I wouldn't say you held back, but by the end, you know, I think the audience felt that you could, at least, be civil.
Are you saying I made you believe that I actually like that woman? Then I win.
It doesn't mean that I lose.
No, it absolutely does mean that you lost.
That that look, that look that says, defeat, that look that says, Mary Jane is right, and she's just too damn smart for me.
That look is quite the turn-on.
Hmmm.
Don't get used to it.
Oh? Maybe I should get used to it.
It looks like my little White girl is killing it.
Unh-unh.
The look on that smug bastard's face when the attorney told him he was being sexist was priceless.
- ORLANDO: Mm.
Mm.
- What? There is something so sexy about you - when you get shit done.
- Yeah? You don't like housewife Kara? - Oh, you're always sexy.
- KARA: [laughing.]
You've missed that fire that you had when you were at "GDU".
You were strong, felt empowered.
- KARA: Mm-hm.
- Kickin' ass.
KARA: [laughing.]
That's the real you, not some kept housewife.
Mmm - [kisses.]
- Thank you.
- Yeah? - [cell phone chirping.]
- Oh.
Oh.
Wait a minute.
- That's my phone.
Hold on.
Look at these tweets.
Come on, look at this.
Are those the tweets of a guy who just dumped his girlfriend? Absolutely not.
Look at these jokes.
These jokes are, like, self-deprecating.
They're heart-broken even.
You're reading Lee's tweets now? I'm reading Lee's tweets because I know Mary Jane is lying.
So, why don't you talk to her about it already? Nope.
Know what? I've decided that I am gonna have some fun with her.
You know, I like to have fun.
Well, you like the Kara that gets shit done.
Well, this is her.
[kisses.]
See ya later.
I didn't mean right this second.
MARY JANE: Lay down.
MARY JANE: [laughs.]
Do we have to have ground rules about this as well? Yeah.
Sorry.
Rule one [kisses.]
when I'm in control, I want complete surrender.
- No safe words.
- Deal.
[grunts.]
- Rule two.
- Yeah? When I'm in control - I have every part of you.
- Deal.
- Oh! - [gasps.]
Okay, rule number three.
When we start, we don't stop, no matter what.
[cell phone music.]
Oh, geez, it's it's my niece.
Okay, well, don't you're breakin' the rules already.
[grunts.]
- Hey, Niecy.
- Hey, Auntie, what's up? Is everything okay? I was just seeing how you were doing, you know? What's goin' on.
You there? MARY JANE: Can I call you back? Great.
All right.
Bye.
Guess I'll try some other time.
[cell phone buzzing.]
[groans.]
Just mute it.
[kissing.]
Oh, no, it's Kara.
I've gotta take it.
Thank you.
- Hey, Kara.
- KARA: Hey.
What's up? - KARA: Get dressed.
- I'm coming over.
We need to drown your sorrows with a proper girls' night out tonight.
- Tonight? - Oh, no, no.
Um Girl, I am in that stage of grieving where I'm just in sweatpants and eating ice cream, so, I I can't.
KARA: Yeah? Well, too bad, okay? I'm almost there anyway.
Wait.
What? Wait.
Wait.
Where are you? KARA: Downstairs.
My cab just pulled up.
You're downstairs? Okay, um you know, just just stay right there.
Don't move.
Don't come up here.
MARY JANE: So, where are we gonna go? KARA: So, Lee has a show tonight and we're gonna make an appearance.
Why would I wanna do that? To heckle the bastard and get back at him for breaking your heart.
Oh, no, no, we can't do that.
That that's way too mean, Kara, and crazy.
Girl, you've done a lot worse to guys who've done much less, okay? But, yeah, Lee's not that bad.
Seriously? He left you when you were trying to have his baby.
That sounds pretty bad to me.
Kara, we're not going to Lee's show.
Why not? Because I broke up with him.
I knew it.
- I didn't wanna lie to you.
- But you've been lying to me.
Because you knew that you were blowin' up a relationship that was going perfectly.
It wasn't going perfectly.
Tell me what was wrong with it.
What's your excuse this time? Kara, no relationship is perfect.
Exactly, Mary Jane.
That's why you work on it.
That's what relationships are all about.
- You really wanna know? - Yeah.
I broke up with Lee be because I - I'm out of his league.
- What? Look, I'm sorry if that sounds too harsh.
I'm lead anchor and I want someone who matches my hustle.
I want a man who's gonna ride to the top with me.
Mary Jane, you have been waiting for this man for ten years.
- Maybe even more.
- So what? I have faith that my perfect man is out there.
Girl, you are 40 years old and he hasn't shown up yet.
And what? So, now, suddenly he's just right around the corner? Really? Maybe.
Mm-hm.
Yeah.
Excuse me, sir? Do you know what? Can you turn around and take us back to her apartment, please, because girls' night is now over.
[heavy sigh.]
Kara Lynch is one of the best producers at "Great Day USA," uh, probably one of the best producers I've ever worked with.
Every segment of hers was thoroughly researched, more so than I've ever seen.
That's why I found it so perplexing that she just simply did not do the same level of research on the Liz Turnow internet bullying story.
KARA: But it wasn't my story.
The fact-check supposedly was done before it even reached my desk.
Ms.
Lynch, please let Mr.
Talbot finish his statement.
[clears throat.]
What about the North Carolina sex scandal story that you produced for Aaron? What about it? You took that over from Jamie, right? It wasn't your story, but you went above and beyond, and started the research from square one.
- Is that true? - Yeah, that's true.
But that doesn't mean that Your entire career, you've done your due diligence, and this time, you simply did not, and that's a fireable offense.
Kara, wait.
- Let me guess.
- "It's nothing personal.
" I was just doing my job.
Your job is to produce the news, asshole, not drag my name through the mud and embarrass me.
Kara, it's the facts, all right? They asked me for my testimony and I gave it.
Bullshit! You enjoyed the hell outta yourself in there.
And you know what? Why am I surprised, really? Because all you care about is climbing up the ladder, and you knock anybody down who's in your way.
First, Ronda, now me.
Who's next, hm? Mary Jane, maybe? You know what? I bet you've never won a damn thing fairly your entire life.
If you spent less time playing the victim, maybe you'd be in a better position right now! TREYVION: I want that one right there.
NIECY: Triflin'.
Triflin'.
Triflin'.
Girl, you swipe to the left like that's your job.
Triflin'.
Triflin'.
Sexy.
But triflin'.
How you know he's triflin'? Because he's from Atlanta.
AMIKA: I hear that.
What are you doin'? NIECY: I'm changing my search to New York.
Now that is what I call a man.
[clicks tongue.]
Havin' a long-distance relationship with some New York Negro ain't gonna feed your kids.
KARA: [sighs.]
Hey.
- I started without you.
- Oh.
Look, I don't want anything to come between us - and there's - KARA: [sobbing.]
there's really nothing that is more important to me KARA: [sobbing.]
- Jesus, what happened? - What's wrong? Kara, tell me what's wrong? What happened? That devil, he tried to destroy me in my arbitration today.
What? Who who who did what? Justin! He tried to make me look completely negligent.
Oh, you've gotta be kidding me.
Why are you surprised, Mary Jane? I told you That man is evil.
It's gonna be okay.
No, it's not gonna be okay.
If I lose that arbitration, my reputation's gonna be killed.
Nobody will ever hire me as a producer.
We're gonna figure it out.
I'm sorry, Mama, you needed to talk to me.
Why did you need to talk to me about? Girl, it's not even important now.
- Are you sure? - I'm positive.
My hands were tied.
Garrett wanted me to bury her.
You somehow can manoeuver your way onto big stories, you masterminded Ronda getting axed, but when it comes to Kara's hearing, damn, you are just amazingly fresh out of ideas.
Garrett gave me no choice.
Really? Why is it that you want to keep our secret from Kara so bad? I I don't.
- I'm stupid.
- Is that what it is? I'm stupid.
I must be stupid.
Justin, my man.
I got a call from upstairs.
They said things were looking good.
I wouldn't be too sure.
But, the, uh, CTS lawyers were optimistic.
Yeah, well, maybe they know more about this kinda thing than I do.
Okay, what what are you saying? Look, Kara has the female card going in her favor, right? Today went well, but I don't think it was enough.
GARRETT: [heavy sigh.]
What do you suggest? Look, all I know is that there's only one way to make sure that we don't have to pay Kara a dime of that settlement money.
I don't know about you, but I tend to prefer a sure thing.
How many times does it take to make you sing The others around you, they don't count with me You'd better watch your mouth and watch your face God, it's so great to have you back! I'm still in shock.
Listen, not only do I have my job back, but Garrett bumped me to senior producer.
Oh, my God, that's incredible.
[squealing.]
I know! I can't believe it.
I don't know what you did, girl, - but oh, my God.
- Oh, no, no, I didn't - I didn't - Just shhh! Just accept my thanks, already, please, okay? - Okay.
- [laughing.]
I am so happy.
I'm so happy.
And it's with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to America's furry sweetheart, Ling-Ling the panda.
NIECY: You know what, Grandma? You're right.
She does seem to be smilin' a lot more lately.
- Mm-hm.
I told ya.
- at the Beijing Zoo.
Something is up.
Sorry I haven't been able to get more out of her.
You know, if she were here, we could talk in person, and I can get to the bottom of what's goin' on.
You're right.
We need to get her to come visit.
Or you could go visit her.
Oh, no, I can't go to New York right now.
Oh, but you could, Niecy.
Grandma, I don't know.
The kids Well, I can do the kids for a minute.
I think we can find an inexpensive ticket.
Well, you know, if you think that'll help, I'll do whatever you need me to do.
My sweet little grandbaby [kisses.]
- I'll get right on it.
- Okay.
HELEN: Paul? - - [sighs.]
He's so fine.
Mm! Mm-mm-mm.
DANI [on tape.]
: Everyone's entitled to their free speech.
Hey.
I just wanted to say thank you.
I know it couldn't have been easy getting the brass to agree to Kara coming back.
It took a little maneuvering, but I also got them to sign off on the new correspondent.
She's stopping by today, in fact.
- She? - Mm-hm.
So, you went with Lindsay.
Oh, uh, her.
Nah.
Um, Aaron told me he had been intimate - with Lindsay in the past.
- Oh.
So, uh, these office romances, they are not good for business.
So, who did you end up going with? Those three-minute videos that you Your interview with Dani was the spark, yeah.
She has got exactly what we need in a new correspondent.
I mean, she doesn't have traditional news experience, but, uh, she has already a built-in audience, the work ethic, the skills.
The execs love the idea.
I mean, I had to salary her to compete with the internet ad money that she's making, but she's gonna be the first blogger-turned-morning- show-correspondent ever.
Yeah, we're making history here at "GDU," Mary Jane.
- It's all thanks to you.
- From "Great Day USA.
" JUSTIN: An alt-right pandering internet star.
Really? What the hell was he thinking? This would have never happened, if we had both backed the same person.
You're right.
We need to be a united front now more than ever.
I'm sorry I doubted you.
What you did for Kara, that, was It wasn't a big deal.
How did you get her back, anyway? JUSTIN: [laughs.]
She was asking for parity.
I got them to give her a title bump to senior producer.
It didn't cost them a dime.
You're willing to share your title with her.
I thought that meant so much to you.
JUSTIN: [sighing.]
