Project Runway: All Stars (2012) s04e12 Episode Script

Some Like It Hot Dog

Previously on Project Runway: All Stars Welcome to Marchesa.
We're working with a client who's here for a final fitting for her wedding dress.
Your challenge is to design a bridesmaid's dress.
Why did I pick this bitch organza? You never construct with this fabric.
He just set himself for the disaster.
[Crying.]
It's really hard to challenge yourself every single week.
And sometimes, it gets to you.
Who is next? You don't know.
Anybody can be next, I guess.
Now the pressure's on because there's only five designs to look at tomorrow.
The end is near.
[Upbeat music.]
this was my favorite dress.
I love the fact that you can alter the drapery.
It's really flattering.
You want your bridesmaids to feel as gorgeous as possible.
I commend you for being so tasteful.
And the winning designer is Helen.
Yes, Georgina! Michelle, why isn't that dress, like, 5 inches shorter? Have you worked with satin-faced organza before? I have.
It's so bitchy.
Then you should know better, fabio.
The designer eliminated tonight is Fabio.
This is Project Runway: All Stars.
Beautiful.
Good morning, designers.
All: Good morning.
Just four of you remain.
You are so close to the final challenge.
How does it feel? Weird.
Surreal.
Weird? Strange.
There is nothing else I want more at this point than win this competition.
I think about my season and how I totally blew it right before finale I am a little worried that this print dress feels very tortured.
Can she move her arms in it? So I'm really hoping that, this time, I make it to the end.
We have come to a critical stage in the competition.
This is the week that decides who makes it to the project runway: All Stars finale.
There is a 25% chance right now that I'm gonna win this thing.
It's definitely exciting.
So our challenge is suitably dramatic.
Take a look at this.
Hi, Project Runway All Stars, my name is Kelli garner, and I am playing Marilyn Monroe in lifetime's upcoming miniseries, the secret life of Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn was one of Hollywood's first and most glamorous screen icons.
Helen, sonjia, dmitry, and Michelle, your challenge is to design an outfit that looks like a million dollars But, unfortunately, your budget will be a little bit less.
To tell you more, it's back to you, Alyssa.
Bye.
So Marilyn Monroe has inspired this week's challenge.
To prove you're worthy of a place in the finale, we want you to create a dazzling red-carpet gown suitable for the oscars that, just like Marilyn, will be remembered for years to come.
It's red carpet.
It's what I do.
I have to win this challenge! This is my challenge.
I'm very, very nervous.
I've never designed anything red carpet for any kind of special event.
We want a timeless look that sparkles and shines like the brightest Hollywood star.
And as this week is so important, we're giving you your biggest budget of the season.
$500 each.
[Whistles.]
But you have just one day in the workroom to create your gowns.
In one day, you cannot do something crazy.
You have to make sure you can make it happen.
And one more thing.
There's a job up for grabs for this week's winner.
Lifetime is offering you the chance to design wardrobe for a leading character in an original lifetime movie event.
Ooh.
Wow.
That's incredible.
To be a costume designer? Like, that could open a lot of doors.
So I will see you back here on the runway tomorrow for your dazzling red-carpet gowns.
Good luck.
All: Thank you.
Ooh.
Well, they rolled out the red carpet for us.
A red carpet.
I wonder if they're gonna stick one on the runway.
A red-carpet gown has to be dramatic, and it has to sparkle and have this movement.
So I'm using a lot of fringe to design a beautiful 1920s-inspired flapper dress but kind of a modern version of it.
The judges know that I've made red-carpet dresses before, so their expectations are probably really high.
For this challenge, my silhouette is a high collar, a long cap sleeve, and since Marilyn Monroe is the inspiration, I keep thinking, like, "oh, that's a babe dress.
" She's gonna be a babe.
I really am going to put my all into this look.
I know I want a straight, pencil-y skirt with a bow that's in your face.
I'm so glamorous.
Don't look at me, but look at me.
Can you see me? Only a little bit.
I'm sketching a long sleeve, body-conscious gown, super old Hollywood.
But how I'm making it modern is the really plunging, low backline.
And I think that's where it's going from kind of the old glamour to new glamour.
Like, what your dress ends up looking like really depends on what fabric you get.
Do you have any ideas for your fabric? I do, but I don't want to tell you, 'cause I don't want you guys stealing my idea.
I'm keeping mum about it.
So I want to get to mood and get them before anybody else finds them.
Let's go to mood and get some sparkles! Go, go, go, go, go, go, go! 30 minutes, 30 minutes.
I want to have this moody romance happening, so I get a burnout velvet that has lurex, that sparkly kind of tinsel.
Ooh, 80 a yard? This fabric is ridiculously expensive, and to top that off, it's only about 40 inches wide.
So I spent all of my budget on this fabric, but I think it's just gonna be really special.
This is the last challenge of the season, and at this point, it's fair game for anybody.
I don't want to just limit myself.
I'm just gonna get as many fabrics as I can get.
3 yards of this? 5 yards of each.
I'll take everything on that.
This is really nice.
But I definitely feel like gold is a perfect color for, like, the oscars.
So let's do 3 yards of this and 3 yards of this? Yeah.
I find a beaded chantilly lace in this beautiful, like, mint julep.
I don't know what that is.
I just like the way it sounds together.
The biggest risk that I'm taking with this design is that the color--it could go really, really old or really, really modern.
You know, I think I might actually be, like, totally in love with this.
If the judges want timeless, then they're gonna want a color that always works.
I'm buying this beautiful off-white, golden lace 4 yards of this.
And I'm buying fringe.
I want to do something ivory.
But I can't really find what I'm looking for.
Oh, my God.
It's so white.
So I have to tea-dye the fringe to match the fabric.
It's gonna be a pain in the ass, but Guys, we got five minutes! Okay, we should probably start cutting, I feel like.
12 yards of this.
Thank you.
Expensive.
Thank you so much.
Red carpet, here we come.
[Laughs.]
All: Thank you, mood! Ooh.
I'm gonna tea-dye my fringe.
Are you? Yeah, because it's so white.
Is it gonna dry in time? Oh, boy.
I need to match this to this.
I just hope the dyeing will work.
Otherwise-- well, I don't know why you're sitting here talking to me, chatty Cathy.
You should probably get to dyeing.
Yeah.
I'm using tea bags to dye my fringe.
It gives this ivory, almost antique look to it, just makes it very expensive-looking.
Hello, everybody.
It's me.
I have arrived.
I know there's a high chance of me making it to finale.
I just have to show the judges why I deserve to go.
Decisions, decisions.
This look has to be something that stands out to them.
Ooh, that's regal.
Yeah.
Where you going, girl? Mm-hmm.
Looking all fancy, girl.
She's looking real fancy.
Helen, do you think your lace is sparkly enough? Are you kidding? No.
It's pretty damn sparkly.
The whole dress will be lace.
I know, it's just not sparkling to me.
I bought chantilly beaded lace.
You're gonna tell me, the girl that has made a grammy performance gown that was covered in glass beads and would not stop shining for the life of itself, that my fabric's not sparkly? It's not sparkling to me.
From here, at least.
From here.
I mean, it might be different in the lights.
Yeah, there's no way it's not gonna sparkle.
I don't know what Helen's doing.
I guess grandma is going to a wedding because the sea foam color is reading really bland, and I don't see sparkle in her beaded fabric at all.
Look at the difference.
Oh, there's a huge difference.
Pin the tea-dyed stuff up against your fabric.
Yeah.
Oh, that matches perfectly.
It's a very time-consuming process.
It's gonna take forever to dry, but I'm gonna blow dry it.
Ooh.
I have to do what I have to do.
I'm having a lot of problems with my pattern layout.
Because this velvet has a nap, it's really important that the pattern pieces are all cut in the same direction.
And I don't have very much fabric, and it's very, very narrow.
It's not gonna have as much flare at the bottom as I want, but I still think it's gonna be pretty elegant.
I definitely picked the right fabric for this.
I love the sheerness of it.
I kinda know where I wanna go with the skirt, so I'm just deciding how to construct the top of it, just kinda working through my thoughts.
My top is to be continued.
Oh, boy.
Hi, designers.
What, huh? Come talk to me.
Uh, what, we get to come up to you? Just a little surprise.
What's he doing over on these side of the tracks? How are y'all? Good.
You look so different up close.
I do? Do I look cuter? Yes! You are very handsome.
Are you that desperate to win this competition? [Laughter.]
So I know that this is a really big week for you all, so I have a little something to break the tension.
What is he doing here? Please don't let there be a twist.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
Now, Marilyn Monroe was such a big Hollywood icon.
Well, I have another icon.
She's been saving the day in Hollywood for 75 years.
Okay, who is she? My God, she's old.
Betty white? Who's been alive for 70 years that's been an icon? You ready to meet her? All: Yes.
Oh, my goodness.
Come on out.
Now, Marilyn Monroe was such a big Hollywood icon.
Well, I have another icon.
She's been saving the day in Hollywood for 75 years.
You ready to meet her? All: Yes.
Come on out.
[All gasp.]
Lassie? Lassie, come up here.
Wow, she's so pretty.
Yeah.
Gorgeous.
This is Michael Francis from dreamworks Hi.
And of course, the one and only Lassie.
Wow.
You don't know Lassie? Oh, my God, it's Lassie.
Like, who? Lassie's thrilled to be here today.
She is one of Hollywood's most enduring stars.
Really celebrating the hero in every dog.
I'm sure to you this looks like a little bit of fun, but I designed a collection of clothes and toys, et cetera, for dogs.
So I thought, let's have some time out from your actual challenge and have a mini challenge.
Oh, no.
You're all gonna need to design a piece of canine couture.
Yeah! And you're all gonna get a different dog to work with.
Oh.
How sweet.
So sweet.
Lassie is the ambassador for best friends animal society.
So best friends has brought along today four rescue dogs.
They'll get a chance to bond with each of you as you complete this challenge.
So each of you is gonna get a special doggie bag.
Inside, there's gonna be fabric, toys, treats, and most importantly, a movie genre.
We're gonna ask you to design a movie-inspired garment for your dog.
So let's find out who's getting which dog and which genre.
Lassie? All: Aw.
Helen, you get scrappy.
Thank you.
What'd you get? Sci-Fi.
Oh.
Michelle, you get taz.
Tasmanian devil it is.
[With accent.]
I got Western.
That's fun.
Good girl.
Cha-cha.
Cha-cha.
So fitting.
Both: Musical comedy.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Dmitry, this is obviously for you.
Dollar.
Oh, dolla.
Dolla.
Gangster.
Gangsta.
I like that.
All right, designers.
You have till Lassie returns to the workroom to make your outfit.
And Lassie has a prize.
That's right, the winning designer for today's challenge will be the guest designer for Lassie's couture canine collection, which will be debuting next year.
Awesome.
This is a huge market.
People dress their dogs all the time.
I'm excited to win any challenge, but this is kind of a big deal.
Each of you will walk the red carpet with your dog.
Oh, my gosh.
And Lassie, Michael, and I will judge.
Okay.
Your clients are ready to meet you.
[All gasp.]
Hey.
Aww.
Oh, my goodness.
Hi, dollar.
You're the cutest.
Hi, baby.
Look at your beard-y.
You're so cute.
I like your eyes.
They go in different directions.
Can we just hang out? I know, really.
Unfortunately, I am allergic to dogs, but I am more allergic to losing.
Cha-cha, you like feathers? 18.
Oh, my dog's really not into this.
He's got the goods.
[Dog barks.]
Oh, my goodness.
Taz, what do you think about assless chaps? Oh, cha-cha just peed on the carpet! [Dog barks.]
Excuse me, baby.
Excuse me.
Thank you.
[Chuckles.]
Oh, my gosh.
Already you're looking Western.
Boom.
Rocket ship.
I hate it too.
I'm sorry.
Cha-cha looks amazing.
Cha-cha's like, "I don't know.
" [Dog barks.]
Time's up! Time to go to the runway.
Come on, scrappy.
This is scrappy.
He's a rocket ship.
The best-looking rocket ship in town.
Dollar, please, let's go.
This is dollar.
He has his gangster robe.
The construction is very complicated.
He has a beautiful collar.
Come on, taz.
Oh, I know, that's pee.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Don't do anything on top of it! Okay.
[With accent.]
this is taz.
He's an oil tycoon.
He's got his dungarees on and a dollar bill in his pocket.
Oh, that's funny.
Sonjia is walking.
She's living, living.
This is cha-cha.
She performs every Thursday and Friday in the boom boom room.
And go, let's go.
Designers, that was a great runway.
So fun.
And I think we're gonna let Lassie make the actual decision about who wins.
Come on, Lassie.
I haven't won anything yet.
I know you can probably smell the desperation coming off of me.
Lassie will help pick the winner with two barks for "yes" and one bark for "no.
" Is dmitry the winner? [Lassie barks once.]
Is sonjia the winner? [Lassie barks once.]
Is Helen the winner? [Lassie barks once.]
And is Michelle the winner of the challenge? [Lassie barks twice.]
Yes! Congratulations.
Michelle, you're Lassie's new creative director.
Wow, that's amazing.
That's really exciting.
I'm definitely a dog girl, so this is a pretty charming challenge to win.
Oh, we might have--I'm gonna just Oh, boy.
Oh, wow.
My model pooped on the runway.
That's a Sci-Fi moment.
Oh, come on.
[Bleep.]
Happens, okay? Thank you, Lassie.
Thank you, Michael.
Designers, you did an amazing job, and I'll see you tomorrow on the runway.
Okay.
All: Thank you.
Actually, it was really good.
I'm glad I did that thing.
The dog? I was really annoyed at first 'cause I was like, what the hell is this [Bleep.]
? Ain't nobody got time for this.
But then I met cha-cha, and she stole my heart, andWe made love in the boom boom room.
[Chuckles.]
Okay.
It's hammer time.
[Hammering.]
Helen's, like, banging in my ear, like, I'm like, oh, my God.
Be done with this already.
Helen's using this beautiful beaded chantilly lace, and you can't run that through a sewing machine.
As soon as a needle hits one of those beads, you break your needle.
Hey, Helen, you building a house? If all else fails, I'll be a construction worker.
So it's really important that you either trim those beads out of the seam allowance, or you hammer them out.
Oh, my God.
This couture nonsense.
Couture! Couture! Couture.
Zanna's on her way, and we need to have stuff to show her.
So it gets serious real quick.
Where are you putting your sparkle? I don't know yet.
Okay.
I'm just being sparkle police.
Wow.
That is fantastic.
Hi, designers.
Hi.
Hello.
I am so happy to see the four of you in here.
We all know there's only three places left in the final, though.
So I'm here today to really help you make the best iconic, timeless, red-carpet Oscar gown we have ever seen on the runway.
Michelle, I'm gonna start with you.
Hi.
I'm walking the red carpet up to you here.
Oh, you look like you should be, in that dress.
Aww.
Flattery will get you everywhere, love.
Tell me, how are you doing? What are we doing? I'm doing pretty well.
I've got a pretty glitzy, sparkly, burnt-out velvet with lurex as well as some added drama with a very low, sexy, revealing back detail.
And this chain at the back.
Mm-hmm? It's a little bit cheap-looking, and this gown is definitely not cheap-looking.
No.
I think you've made the money go a long way, so don't bring the whole thing down by just having something that's so simplistic and kind of commonplace.
I wanted to treat it somehow.
I mean, even if I were to take a little bit of the fashion fabric and maybe even weave it through there--it just needs something more.
Just make this look more expensive, in tune with the rest of it.
Agreed, agreed.
This lace Mm-hmm.
And fringe was so white, so I dyed it this morning in tea.
So clever! Gives kind of an antique look.
Yeah, it gives it an antique feel, yeah.
Yeah.
It looked like a dirty mop.
Like, oh, the janitor just came by and mopped up some vomit in the hallway.
Like, oops, that's my fringe.
And then I have some crystals.
Very, very sparkly.
These can make a look, but you have to be able to apply these properly.
When I look at it close, it clashes to me, a little bit.
But from, like, 10 feet away, looks great.
They are 10 foot away.
Yeah.
And with all the lights and on the runway, it's gonna elevate it so much.
I really wanted to do this knot thing.
I thought it would give it a lot of drama and make the woman stand out on the red carpet.
I do like this a lot.
Yeah? I think it's modern Mm-hmm.
But something that would also stand the test of time, and That's what I--yeah.
That's what this is about.
Think about your construction with it.
It's gonna have to be finessed perfectly.
Perfectly.
Yeah.
Quite honestly, it's gonna be a really tough call to get rid of any of you at this point.
I want to see all four of you go into the final, and that's not gonna happen.
I know.
Someone is gonna go.
I want to see somebody go.
"I want someone out.
I want someone out.
" Long as it's not me.
Who's your biggest competition right now? Dmitry.
He's never been in the bottom.
Everyone in this room could win this thing Oh, absolutely.
So it's gonna have to be one of the most iconic dresses of all time.
Okay.
You design red-carpet gowns.
Yes.
This is your wheelhouse.
What's more timeless than a beaded lace gown? I feel like I could look back 50 years, and I always, always, always see style icon in a dress that's in this type of fabric.
But it still has to stand out.
Timeless doesn't necessarily mean you can pop it in any decade.
In this instance, it means something that is gonna be projected into our memory for the rest of time.
This to me feels more victorian than it does modern, and this whole piece feels a bit old-fashioned.
I think it's beautiful, but I could see it in a museum.
I didn't for a second think, like, oh, this could go really old, and, like, it belongs in a museum.
Now there are, like, three hours left in the day, so I'm in a bit of a panic.
[Whistle blows.]
This needs work.
Yeah.
This is fine, it's beautiful, it's simple, it's easy.
This needs to be knockout, pow, oh, my God, I'm never gonna forget this dress, ever.
Right.
Helen has an aesthetic.
She has an age about her.
But in this dress, i wouldn't look twice at it.
It justBlah.
Imagine Cate blanchett wearing Armani privé on the red carpet at the oscars.
Right.
Iconic--you can do it.
You need something of that standard.
Four left, three are gonna get through to the final.
You have to be one of them.
Kill it.
Pound.
Go, girl.
Thank you, Zanna.
Good luck.
Okay, designers.
I can see these dresses going to the oscars, but they are supposed to be timeless and iconic.
I need to remember these dresses in years to come.
These are maybe somewhat forgettable.
I know.
I'm being tough, but this is for the final.
There's four of you left, and only three of you are going through.
Good luck.
All: Thank you.
Every critique that Zanna gives me, I take to heart.
I gotta think up a whole new bodice.
What did Zanna say about the one that you have? It looked victorian, which it did.
Time to figure out something that's more youthful and sexy.
I decide that I'm going to scrap my entire bodice and just make a really sweet and sexy--just, like, camisole top with spaghetti straps and a really sexy neckline, and boom.
It's super modern-looking.
We need, like, ten more hours.
It's insane.
The chain does make it a little cheap and a little mtv movie awards, not the oscars.
And so I'm spending a lot of time putting things on and taking them off, putting them on and taking them off because I think it's important for these decisions.
Hi! All: Hi.
How are you? How are you? This week's challenge is iconic, timeless red carpet.
This is for you.
Yeah.
I'm really sorry if you get pinched.
We're gonna put a lot of crystal in it, if I have time.
Gonna be kind of pretty when it's finished.
If I don't, you're just gonna work the fringe and sparkle with your eyes.
How about that? [Indistinct chatter.]
Not freaking out.
Got a lot of work to do.
But it's gonna beAwesome.
I think Helen's in trouble.
She's completely scrapping the top of her look and changing it to something completely different.
And her fabric doesn't look like anything that I know anyone would think to wear on a red carpet.
Boring.
When I think sparkle, like, glass beads, they just-- there is no stop--there is, like, no stopping it.
Bye, we'll see you tomorrow.
We're gonna do great.
We have an hour.
Ugh.
Dmitry? What's up? [With accent.]
Look into your crystal balls.
[Laughter.]
And tell me who's in trouble tomorrow.
Would you? Helen.
Yeah.
It doesn't read.
You have to, like, stay next to it to kind of see it.
If I were to look into your crystal balls, I'd see the same thing.
Yeah.
I've been so behind.
You're behind? When the [Bleep.]
I'm gonna put sparkles? [Normal voice.]
If you don't put sparkles, you could be going home.
I'll do whatever I can.
[With accent.]
My crystal balls tell me you be in trouble without sparkles.
Michelle.
[Normal voice.]
What? [Speaks indistinctly.]
We're getting really close to the finale, so I just want to push myself to no limits, so the judges are like, oh, we see how much you want this and how dedicated you are.
But who knows? I'm just gonna keep working really hard.
Ten minutes.
Ooh, lord, lord, lord.
My zipper just broke on me.
Again? Yerp.
Why do your zippers break on you? I don't know.
I feel like I've been nothing but a good friend to the invisible zipper.
But I don't know what happened in our relationship, but apparently, it's not feeling me.
Because at the end of the day, it completely just broke on me.
Time's up, guys.
Let's go.
It's just annoying because it now takes another 10, 15 minutes out of tomorrow morning that I already don't have enough time to finish for.
Aw, [Bleep.]
, I got so much stuff to do! Morning of the runway, I have a long list of things to do.
I have to put the zipper in again, finish the skirt, hem it, attach it to the top.
Should have had that ready too.
I have to make sure that everything's ironed, pressed.
As long as I really stay focused, I should be in a good place.
She gonna shine.
There is not much time left, and I need to hand sew all the crystals on.
I would love to embellish the whole dress, but I'll do my best, and I'll make it work.
Hi.
How are you? It is.
Morning.
I just want to make sure it won't be too small.
I just want to do, like, some reinforcement by hand.
I'm a little worried because i just draped the bodice and never fit it on her.
It's attached, so here's to hoping it fits on her body.
Let's put this on and make sure it fits you in the tush.
All right.
Marilyn Monroe just oozed sexuality, and I think that that's what I'm putting into this dress.
I'm gonna show quite a bit of skin.
It might be a risk, but I actually think it's gonna be pretty dazzling.
All right.
I'm gonna unzip you and get you out.
Get it finished.
Welcome to the chi hair care salon.
So red carpet, timeless.
All back? Yes.
And then we'll use the hot rollers, and we'll roll them back.
Easy wave.
Sexy.
I was thinking to go effortless.
Everything kinda back.
A little bit of a pompadour.
Just make it shiny, right? Yes, just a little bit.
Okay.
I tell the Mary Kay color design studio that I want a really dark eye.
The midnight jewel collection in sapphire noir.
And just a nice, dark, dark brow, so you really just zoom right into her eyes.
We gotta do a red lip.
My new favorite is Ruby night.
All the men want her, and all the women want to be her.
Exactly.
You have a bunch of diamonds here to play with.
From the QVC accessory wall, i grabbed diamond studs and a diamond ring.
That one's kind of prettier.
What's more red carpet than diamonds? Sparkle! There's something about this that's really sexy to me.
I want to accent this dress a little bit and kind of show off her waist.
And so I put just one chain.
I kinda like that.
I wish I had one with some diamonds on it, but I'm going with what I have.
You look gorgeous.
This way.
Only three of us will move forward after the challenge, and I have consistently come through in every single challenge thus far.
So I feel really good about making it to the end.
30 minutes! Watch out, watch out, watch out.
I put the dress on my model, and she looks amazing.
And this dress looks exactly the way I imagined it.
So, great job, dmitry.
Five minutes, guys.
Five minutes to runway.
Looking around the room, I'm feeling really, really confident about my work because i see black, I see dirty mop, and I see cheap gold.
And I'm like, aw, there's no way.
Time's up.
Let's hit the runway, guys.
Oh! Hi.
All: Hi.
Hey, all-stars! Hey.
This week, we took Marilyn Monroe as inspiration for a dazzling red-carpet gown suitable for the oscars.
And Isaac also introduced you to another Hollywood icon in the form of Lassie for a mini challenge in the workroom.
How did that go? Anybody go home with a dog? I wish.
Who won that challenge? Congratulations.
Thank you.
So let's meet tonight's judges.
First, co-founder and designer of luxury brand Marchesa Georgina Chapman.
Hi, designers.
Next, one of the most iconic names in American fashion, Isaac Mizrahi.
Hi, kids.
Our guest judge turned selling old clothes on ebay into one of America's fastest growing online retailers.
She's the best-selling author of girl bosand founder and ceo of the fashion brand nastygal.
Com.
Please welcome Sophia amoruso.
Whoo! Hi.
The judges and I are looking for a red-carpet gown that can be seen as a timeless classic and will be remembered for years to come.
And this week's winner will receive their debut as a fashion designer for a lifetime miniseries event.
This is gonna be a good one.
Have a great show.
All: Thank you.
[Techno music.]
I'm so excited about my look.
Seeing the way the light hits it--it's gold and silver at the same time.
I love the bottom of the dress.
You look awesome.
I could really see someone wanting to wear this on the red carpet.
She just sparkles.
I think she looks amazing.
She looks sexy and confident and like a starlet.
I couldn't be more pleased, and this is by far the gowniest gown I've ever made.
I'm really happy with how it turned out.
It is romantical, and it is sweet and pretty.
That sparkle and dazzle factor is something I've got on lock.
I want this one so bad.
The dress looks beautiful.
The vinyl straps use this kind of sexy, modern twist.
Yesterday, I thought it was gonna be a dirty mop.
Nobody would ever believe that that dress was made in 12 hours.
Designers, it was a dazzling runway.
Three of you will make it to the All Stars finale.
But for one of you, the journey ends tonight.
Designers, this week, all of your looks will be critiqued, so let's bring out your models.
Sonjia, we're gonna start with you.
Please tell us about your look.
I kind of chose this fabric.
It kind of reads both gold and silver.
And this is just, like, an embroidered fabric that I chose to put over it.
A look that you would remember on the red carpet, I think, of this--always has to be some kind of drama.
And so I thought that the bow would give it a really nice, dramaful look.
Isaac, let's start with you.
Hey, all-stars.
This was the best this week.
You make it very difficult.
This was one of the best runways ever, I mean--I think we did our job picking the final four.
'Cause look at these dresses, they're unbelievable, amazing.
Amazing.
That said, sonjia, I love your dress.
Of all the dresses, it feels dramatic, and you're right, it feels memorable.
I like the idea that it's midriff.
I mean, everyone's just mad about midriff today.
Not me.
Well, I love the lamé textile on the top of the dress.
Can you turn around, please? I wanted to connect the fabric, to bring it down, more of a gown, as opposed to top and a skirt.
That's what makes it inventive, is that it's one piece in the back.
It's a--a really great design.
This is a fabulous dress.
And it's so impactful, it's so memorable.
But the problem is because you've got this embroidery here, you've got the different length in the skirt, there's so many places for the eye to go that we're not appreciating this statement bow.
Okay.
Which is really what is great about this dress.
Yeah.
So it's just a few too many ideas.
Okay.
When you think of classic Hollywood, timeless dresses, I would not even fathom this.
And yet, I'm trying to imagine a picture of it 20 years from now and I think it would still be relevant.
Mm-hmm.
I love the top so much.
I love that it could probably be photographed from many different angles.
Mm-hmm.
With the bare shoulder facing a camera, or otherwise.
And you almost have, like, a little bit of, like, a collar to hide behind.
You did a wonderful job.
Thank you.
Thank you, sonjia.
Hi, Michelle.
Hi.
Tell us about your red-carpet look.
So for my liquid hot magma lady, I used a silk burnout velvet with lurex in it to really catch the light and sparkle.
And for added pizzazz, I have these little thumb hooks that are in there so she can pose kind of cool and show off her jewelry.
Um, in an interesting fashion.
I think the textile is actually the star of this dress because the silhouette is so simple and--and classic.
I don't love the chain.
And I do feel maybe it needs like a little shoulder pad.
Something, right? Just a little shoulder pad to give her more of a--a tinier waist, which I can't even believe this pregnant person is saying that.
To you.
But the silhouette is really beautiful.
I think this dress is really, really pretty.
I love the way it fits her.
I love the back.
It's definitely timeless.
I--if I had one criticism, it would be that it is a little sheer, but I think you did a really excellent job.
Thank you.
This is the best you've done.
You've done a great job here today.
I like the sheer because it's mysterious where it's lined.
I can't really tell exactly where you've lined and where you've left sheer.
The back is enchanting.
Really, it's such a nice back.
I love that idea of this emphasis at her actual waist.
I also like, I think, the idea of the loops.
I like--it's taking me a second.
Like, either I really like it or I really don't like it.
But somebody would like it.
My one thing about the dress that I am on the fence about-- does the textile look extremely expensive? Mm.
.
But you've done a great job.
This is a really beautiful dress.
Very pretty.
Thank you.
Very impactful when she came down.
However, I'm gonna agree with Isaac.
This dress is about fabric because it's a very simple shape.
I think you have to be so careful with your pattern.
It's the patterning in it that doesn't feel the most expensive.
And when you're coming to the leg area, it feels very found.
In reality, you would make it in something probably a lot more expensive.
This is really expensive textile, actually.
Just 'cause a textile is expensive doesn't make it look expensive.
Oh, totally, totally.
We know that.
I totally agree--yeah, yeah.
Let's move on to Helen.
So I wanted to do something that wasn't, like, sparkle, bam, down your throat, but, a subtle, really delicate, expensive approach.
So with that, I took this chantilly beaded lace.
And I draped it from the waist to the floor so that I could have both scallops.
And I had a little issue with, um, with the neckline, so I toned it down to give it something more playful and flirty.
And I used the mid portion of the lace on the bodice to create something that was, like, really modern.
And that's my gown.
I think your dress is really pretty.
The beading is really gorgeous, but I don't think it's extremely memorable.
I think the color would be challenging on a range of skin tones.
And just personally from having, you know, sold clothing, that's something that I'm always kind of thinking about.
I would have loved if there was just a little bit more drama somewhere.
Right.
But I think you made a really, really beautiful dress.
Thank you.
And you should be really proud of yourself.
I think it's beautiful.
And it is a very classic silhouette.
And there's not a lot you can rip apart about it, which-- to a celebrity walking a red carpet, we like.
Thank you.
We kind of play it safe 'cause we're all afraid to make it on that worst dressed list.
Yeah.
I think this is very safe and pretty, but I think perhaps it's too safe.
I want to see a little bit more of you in this dress and a little touch more originality.
I think maybe your strap feels an after thought here.
It almost looks like it's elastic or something that doesn't marry.
Yeah, it's actually just georgette but right after my critique, I just had to totally scrap the bodice.
I see.
Right.
I love this dress.
Yes! I have to say, I just love it.
Okay.
Good.
I love the color of the dress.
She's enchanting when she stands there.
My only criticism is it didn't move beautifully.
Such a modern idea, has to move.
She's very pretty, but she's too long.
Pull the--can you just--I just want to see what it would look like if it was slightly more empire.
Scallop under the bust.
Yeah, there you go.
Then it would be a Marchesa gown.
Come on now! Thank you, Helen.
Dmitry, last, but not least.
I took my inspiration from the ultimate glamour of 1920s.
And I bought this golden lace and I pieced it together to create this pattern.
And I bought fringe and I actually died it in tea.
This dress blew me away.
Might be my favorite thing that I've ever seen on the all starunway, ever.
I loved this challenge and I--I loved what--I mean, I was going crazy over it, but I--I was loving it.
It's really [Bleep.]
beautiful.
All: Oh.
It's really great.
So unseemly when pregnant ladies use that kind of language.
Sorry, guys.
I love all of the elements that you've combined.
I think it definitely dazzles.
I actually love the clear straps and I've never said that in my entire life before.
Somehow you've made it seem like a really special thing.
It's beautiful on her.
I think you did a really excellent job.
Most of the dresses, I--I get the idea of what would happen in real life if the dress was to be translated.
But this is one of the few times where that could be the dress.
It really looks like this is thousands of dollars.
I love the ease of the top.
I love the way it hangs away from the back.
It really feels effortless.
It feels very 20s, it feels very, I don't know, Josephine Baker-esque.
And your length is really great there.
I agree with Georgina.
I think this dress is like right there.
This is so major.
It's a beautiful, beautiful dress.
On the right girl, it would be irreverent and fabulous.
But I might not wear this to the oscars.
The fringe has a kind of raffia feel to it, which brings the context a little bit less dressy, like it's maybe not exactly Oscar dress.
Yeah.
Thank you, dmitry.
Thank you, guys.
Okay, designers.
The judges and I now have one of the hardest decisions to make of this season so far.
We've got a lot to discuss, so please wait in the backstage lounge and we will call you back.
Thank you.
It went pretty well.
For everyone, pretty much.
Which makes me a little concerned.
I mean, you clearly had a practically flawless critique.
I just went for this.
I loved it.
So what about you, Michelle? It felt good.
Yeah, I thought it was flawless.
I thought it did what it was supposed to do.
I love my dress.
I feel really confident in it.
There's nothing I would change.
Nothing.
My goal was to make something that I felt like would really stand out and be remembered.
But I--I don't have no idea whether or not, like, I'll be one of the three people who will be moving on.
Even though, like, I'm disappointed I didn't make it to finale my season, I know that I've grown so much as a designer.
I know I deserve it now even more than I felt like I deserved it then.
All four looks are so different.
Yeah, definitely.
It could go any way.
This is like when it gets real.
The winner of Project Runway: All Stars will be given the chance to create their own capsule collection with QVC, and will appear on QVC's spring fashion week, a fashion spread in Marie Claire, and a position at the magazine as contributing editor for one year.
Chi hair care will send the winner to stay in a luxury spa resort as a special guest at their international conference in Cancun, Mexico.
Plus product and staff for an entire year of runway shows.
From Mary Kay, an entire year's worth of beauty products for their fashion shows, and professional makeup artist services for their debut show.
And from Brother Sewing and embroidery, a complete sewing and crafting studio to launch their line, and $150,000 in cash.
That was a really spectacular runway.
Isaac was right when he said I'm so glad it's these four that have made it this far.
Having said that, it also makes our decision a lot harder because all of those dresses were so beautiful.
Let's talk about sonjia's dress.
She really did design the hell out of that.
She was the only one, actually, to take a risk and do something gestural and make an impact.
She was the only one that had bravery in her design.
What the other designers did with the word timeless, was make very classic looks.
What stuck out in her mind was something that was going to be remembered.
She created a top that has volume without overwhelming.
I can see it on different body types.
And she did such a good job.
I do think that there were too many ideas in this dress.
This idea of a mini skirt under the skirt-- that's what it is--yeah.
That makes it at least one too many thoughts.
Let's move on to dmitry's dress.
Wow.
Dmitry somehow is able to make 12 hours into, like, 36 hours.
Dmitry's dress just stood out to me.
I totally fell in love with that dress.
It is one of the prettiest dresses we've ever seen, but is it the most timeless Oscar idea? You know what, on the right girl, I think it would work.
On Carey mulligan, it would be fabulous, right? Yeah.
Like, flawless.
Helen? Very pretty.
Very pretty.
Very safe.
I know what you mean by safe, but there's an elegance to this.
But is it memorable? There's really nothing that's special about it.
Actors look for dresses that they can wear that aren't gonna wear them.
That's what I'm talking about.
Yes.
It just needed a little push.
If she had pushed that waistline up to under the bust-- yes, you are so right about that.
It would have been beautiful.
And maybe just finished the strap in some way, like beaded it, it would have shown some kind of, like, all star quality about it.
Michelle's dress? Well that dress made a gorgeous impact.
And it's a great shape that a million actresses would feel good in.
Mm-hmm.
But, again, very safe to me.
The biggest flaw here, i think, was the fabric.
I understand why she picked it, because it certainly captured the light.
There's something to do with the black burnout, the sparkle, the chain in the back.
The chain part of it went a little skanky.
No.
Yeah.
Anything resembling a belly chain is just not okay.
Skanky--there's a word for you, skanky.
No, totally, and it made the fabric look inexpensive too.
It did.
That's what took me, my whole mind to that place.
That--that might have been it, actually.
I don't think it's Oscar-worthy.
This is it, this is our biggest decision yet.
One of these people is not gonna go to the runway, you know? Okay, let's bring them back out.
Designers, this week's winner will receive their debut as a costume designer for an original lifetime miniseries.
And that designer is Dmitry.
Thank you, guys.
That was the challenge to win for me.
I love it.
And you have a guaranteed place in the finale.
Beautiful.
Congratulations.
Thank you, guys.
Good luck.
Congratulations.
Congratulations.
So I'm very happy to be in the finale.
Yes! ButI'm not done yet.
I need to win this.
There are only two places left in the finale.
Sonjia? Your work has earned you that second place in the finale.
Oh, my gosh.
Congratulations.
Oh, my God.
Thank you guys so much.
Good luck.
Oh, my God! Thank you so much! Son-j-IA! Oh, my God.
Oh, congratulations.
I was so worried.
I'm so excited, I'm pumped.
This means a lot to me to be able to make it to finale.
Season 10! Right? I know, right? You know, for dmitry, I think it's awesome.
Like, he's a great designer.
He won our season but for me, i feel like I'm the underdog.
We all grew, but-- yeah.
You justShoo! Thank you.
Michelle and Helen.
You have both come so far, but there's only one place left in the finale.
I have to tell you, we haven't made our decision yet.
Ugh.
What the [Bleep.]
? Michelle and Helen, you have both come so far, but there's only one place left in the finale.
I have to tell you, we haven't made our decision yet.
Michelle, we want to hear why you think you deserve that last place over Helen.
I deserve that last place because my aesthetic is not up here and isn't shown every day.
And, um, I think that I have a killer, killer direction and it needs to be seen.
I think I would nail it.
Helen, why do you think you deserve that last place in the finale over Michelle? There are so many looks that I've put on this runway that I never thought I was capable of.
And looking back on only a few months ago when I was here for season 12, I'm like, wait, i did that? I--I churned out these looks in, like, one day this season? And I just feel like--as a young designer, I finally know what I'm capable of.
I really do know who I am.
And I'm ready to show that.
We're gonna take everything you said into consideration, and we will call you back out.
Come on, girl.
Thank you.
You guys can cuddle and spoon.
Totally permissible.
Both of you guys are in? No.
We had to give a speech right there on the thing--like, what are--why do you deserve to be here? And we were both like, uh Oh, yeah? Oh, my goodness.
Uh--I--I'm not prepared for this.
Right.
I'm gonna vomit out of my mouth--vomit out of my mouth.
I should have been prepared for this.
I know it's a question that's always asked.
What did you say? I have no idea.
Hers sounded pretty good.
What did you say? Hers sounded good.
Well during my season finale, i got kicked off right before, and it was kind of the same circumstances.
It was likeWhy do you deserve to go to finale? And-- so what'd you say? I don't--I can't even talk right now 'cause it's so--now it's like reminiscence, making me think, like, great, I was almost there last time.
Season 12, I blew it.
But there's so much work that I've done while I've been here that I didn't think I was capable of.
I should be going to top three.
I should be going to finale because I can redeem myself.
We have two dresses that just didn't quite nail it.
I don't know if it's clear.
I mean, is it clear? Yeah--no, I don't think we can make a decision.
I can't decide.
I can't.
Not--not for this part of the competition.
Okay, let's bring them back out.
OhGreat.
There are all of the sad dresses and garments from our previous designers that have been kicked out.
I can smell Helen's fear, and I've got the same fear too.
Designers.
We have one more challenge.
And it will take place live on the runway tonight.
To stop you from being sent home, we want you to reinvent the failed looks that sent your fellow all-stars home into a totally new design that will win you the last place in the finale.
This just feels like a razor blade and it's super hard when you're so exhausted to now snap out of it and go at it again.
You must choose at least three looks from six failed designs, and reinvent them into a successful look.
And you will only have-- one hour.
One hour to complete this challenge.
Now my heart's racing.
Great.
What you're about to do will either send you to the finale, or send you home.
In one hour's time, Georgina, Isaac, and I will return to review your new look.
And then, we will make our final decision.
Good luck.
I want this, I taste it.
There's blood in my mouth 'cause i just want to tear this competition apart.
You make it or break it.
It's either you win or you go home.
[Buzzer sounds.]
I really love Justin's avant-garde pencil skirt.
And I'm thinking about redefining it with a shorter hemline.
I like Jay's pleather pants from the QVC challenge.
So I start hacking at those.
This is bull [Bleep.]
.
I'm using Patricia's uptown girl lining, which was a black shift.
From fabio's bridesmaid dress, I'm cutting the skirt off of his.
Like, cutting up somebody's work, that's [Bleep.]
up.
When it comes down to someone who--who's passionate and create something beautiful and then you have to butcher it? [Sighs.]
That's just cruel and unusual.
It's really [Bleep.]
up.
It's, like, not making me feel really good.
I'm really banking on winning, but it's all up to me and whether or not I can control my emotions.
You see, like, somebody work really hard on something and then I can't--I can't cut up somebody's work.
Like, this is so [Bleep.]
up.
I can't--I can't cut up somebody's work.
Like, this is so [Bleep.]
up.
I can't.
Like, somebody worked really hard on this and now I have to cut it up? Well, why don't you just cut up the really ugly stuff? Helen is crying because, you know, we've been designing challenge after challenge after challenge and now we have to cut up somebody else's challenge work.
It's not easy.
Just go--just go work.
I don't want Ah, well, think of it as it's--you're giving it a new life.
You can do it, Helen.
I look at the clock and I am like, time to get over it.
Because I don't want to go home.
I'm putting my all into this last slope.
I don't need a mental, nervous breakdown right now.
I need to make a garment.
At the end of the day, I have me and my passion and if the judge's see how much of myself i put into my work, I'm really banking on winning.
Sixty seconds, Helen.
[Buzzer sounds.]
That's it.
Time's up.
Good job.
I'm going through what I've just used and I have only used two looks.
It was not intentional.
I've put three items into it, but not three looks.
[Bleep.]
I'm in trouble.
This is nerve-wracking for me.
I can only imagine how much it is for them.
Designers, I know this late night challenge was probably really harsh, but the prize is worth fighting for.
Helen? Let's start with you.
Please reveal your reinvented look.
Helen, tell us about your reinvented look, please.
So I used four looks.
Patricia's uptown girl look.
This is actually the lining of it.
Also from fabio's bridesmaid look, I took the satin-faced organza.
For Chris' wicked couture look, he used silver trim.
I just did little inserts here because it kind of gives, like, that cool schoolgirl vibe.
And I took the beads from Kate's party dress.
Michelle, please reveal your reinvented look.
[Claps.]
[Laughs.]
Michelle, please tell us about your reinvented look.
So I made a pant-Cho where I took a pair of pants and remade them into a new, cooler poncho with Jay's pair of pants that he had for his QVC challenge.
I also reinvented the tank, and it goes from high to low, just how the pant-Cho goes, and then using the skirt portion of Justin's look to balance out this fabulous pant-Cho.
I'm seeing Jay's pants and Jay's Tank and-- tank from the same look, right? Apparently, yes.
The skirt is Justin's-- Justin's couture.
So you used two outfits.
Apparently, that happened.
The challenge was taking three pieces--at least three.
Apparently, I got a little confused.
I'm gonna speak to Helen first.
There's something so fresh about that dress.
I love the ease of it.
I love the length of it.
I love this little fang, kind of cat ear, schoolgirl take you did on the neckline.
You always put your entire self into a dress Yeah.
And I'm getting this mood from you.
There's an austerity to it.
There's a sadness to that dress, which I appreciate.
I think you did a great job.
Thank you.
Michelle, I really love what you did too.
That's such a creative, wonderful take.
I love this new length of that skirt because it didn't work at the length he had it.
And it's so amazing that you gave us all these lines and all these planes and all this, like, kind of cubism in one hour.
Helen, I mean, what-- what can I say? It's beautiful.
You are at your best--and I'm sorry--but you are at your best when you're a wreck.
[Chuckles.]
Oh, boy.
You rise to the challenge.
And, Michelle, I love your pant-Cho.
[Laughs.]
It's so innovative, and I definitely feel your personality in this.
[Chuckles.]
Georgina? Wow.
On one hand, we have a dress that's so considered, tailored.
I love the wink of the fang or cat ear.
It's so nothing, and it's so everything.
Mm-hmm.
That just--that is the dress.
And then we have you, Michelle, which is--it's amazing.
You threw things together that no one else would think to throw together.
I love the lines.
I love the angles.
I think the intellect behind it is really smart, really witty, and clever.
Both of you have done that in such different ways.
Both of you, amazing, amazing work.
Thank you.
Thank you, models.
You can leave the runway.
Isaac, Georgina, and I are gonna write down the name of the designer we believe deserves the third place in the finale.
Oh, God, that's brutal.
[Suspenseful music.]
[sighs.]
Designers, you've done some incredible work, but we can only choose one of you to go into the finale.
And that designer is Helen.
Good job, girl.
Which means, I'm sorry to say, Michelle, you are out.
Helen, thank you.
You can join the others.
Thank you.
I feel really awful for having butchered my friends' work, but I ended up winning the challenge, so I'm okay with that 'cause I'm still here! Thanks, guys.
Thank you so much, Michelle.
I'm gonna come give you a hug.
Good-bye, baby.
Take care.
Bye.
Thanks, guys.
Bye, darling.
Thanks.
Lovely meeting you.
Thank you.
Oh, you got a kiss.
Get the other one.
Mwah.
I'm totally surprised I'm not in the final, but when I had my look walk today, it was like, even if I go home, I'm so happy because what I did was [bleep.]
Amazing.
What happened? She's in.
What do you think? Are you serious? And Both: You're out? Yeah.
I don't know why I'm sad now because I'm really kind of exhausted and sort of glad to not have to make seven looks or whatever See you soon.
Even though I knew what they were gonna be, and they were gonna be rad.
Next on Project Runway: All Stars This is your final challenge.
You'll design an eight-piece collection.
You will get just four days.
Oh, my God.
Getting your fringe on again? Are you doing lace again? I was just asking.
Claws are out.
It's the end of the journey, and it's a final push.
[Groans.]
This means everything to me.
Need more hands.
Let's win this [Bleep.]
.
Welcome to the Project Runway: All Stars season finale.
