Quantum Leap s04e13 Episode Script
Temptation Eyes - February 1, 1985
Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Dr.
Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished.
He awoke to find himself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not his own and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better.
His only guide on this journey is Al, an observer from his own time, who appears in the form of a hologram that only Sam can see and hear.
And so, Dr.
Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.
Dylan, come on.
Over here.
Come on.
Come over here.
The background's better.
Take the mike.
Here.
Huh? The mike.
Now we'll be switching live to Action Eye's Dylan Powell, who's at the scene of another brutal strangulation murder in Chinatown.
You're on in five, four, three, two- Oh, boy.
You're on.
I'm on? Yeah.
Live? Yeah.
Reporting live is Action Eye's Dylan Powell, who's once again first on the scene of another murder in Chinatown.
Dylan, can you hear me? Uh-huh.
Dylan, can you tell us what's happening on the scene? Okay.
Yeah, well- I'm uh- I'm in this building.
And, uh, there's a cop at the end of the hallway here.
- I'm in San Francisco.
- Have the police released any information on the victim? Well, actually, I just leaped in he- arrived here, and- We just got out here, and I- No, there isn't any information.
Even though you received an anonymous phone tip from the apparent killer, there's no official confirmation from the police that she's the sixth victim in the Chinatown Strangler case? That is-That's right.
But when we hear, though, we're gonna let you know, soon as we know.
So this is Dylan P-Poole, and, uh, I'm at Channel 12 here.
We'll see ya.
There go our ratings.
What the hell kind of report was that? Well, I froze up a little bit.
I'm- I'm really, uh- Three networks are watching us tonight.
I- What do you want, to blow our big shot getting signed by an affiliate? No.
Look, I'm sorry.
I just- I got a little- Here comes Collins.
Woodward and Bernstein.
So how about tellin' us somethin' about the girl? Why don't you ask your partner here? He's the one who's playing phone tag with whoever strangled her.
Hey, Collins, Dylan was the - He called you first thing after he got the tip.
So what's goin' on in there? Read about it in the paper.
He can't keep us out of there.
Yeah, but he can.
I'm gonna look around.
Maybe there's another way in.
Excuse me.
Oh, I didn't mean to startle you.
Oh, no.
That's okay.
I was ju- I- Some-Sometimes- When you're gonna be on camera, you gotta make sure- I know who you are.
You do? You're the guy on the news- Dylan Powell.
Right? Yeah, right.
I'm Tamlyn Matsuda.
Funny.
You seem so much younger in person.
Thanks, I think.
Oh, hey.
Um, they're not lettin' anybody go in there.
Detective Collins is expecting me.
You work with the police? He asked me to help out on the case.
What do you do? You some kind of a psychic or something? Yes.
You must be one too.
Oh.
It was nice talking to you.
I'm sure we'll do it again.
Yeah? I've got a feeling about it.
Who's that? She's working with the police.
Doing what? I don't know.
I guess she's helping out with the murder or something.
She said, uh, she's a psychic.
Collins must be getting desperate- calling a tea-leaf reader in on the case? Come on, buddy.
Follow me.
We can't go in there, remember? They- I know, so I found another way.
I feel many things.
The energy in here is very strong.
I'm seeing a name.
Janine.
What else do you see? She's come from the club.
She feels dirty from all the smoke and lust in the air.
So she takes a warm bath to wash off the shame.
There's a sound coming from the other room.
I see a man enter.
He's on her.
He's hurting her.
Why is he hurting her? To get rid of his rage.
He's screaming and clawing at her.
He wants to maim and rip her apart, to erase her from his mind.
He wraps a cord around her throat.
Tighter and tighter.
Choking the life out of her.
She's dead.
He holds her and cries.
He keeps saying he's- He's sorry.
He wants her to forgive him.
Is he the one who killed the other girls? I don't know.
He could be.
I don't know.
Watch yourselves, please.
Ma'am, please step back.
What are we waitin'around for? I wanna talk to her.
Oh, come on.
Thank you very much.
If that E.
S.
P.
junk really worked, Homicide would have crystal ball shiners instead of cops.
I'm callin' it a night.
Okay.
You wanna grab a brew or not? Uh, tomorrow night.
Good night.
Good night.
Hi.
Hello.
Guess you were right.
About us running into each other again.
Somehow I've got a feeling you've been waiting for me.
I just wanted to say good night.
Can I walk you home? What? It's dangerous.
I'd feel better if I walked you home.
I don't know you, but it seems like I do.
Probably from the TV.
No, no.
Someplace else.
Okay.
You sure I'm all right? I've got a feeling about it.
Okay.
So you didn't foresee the other murders.
I was teaching a parapsychology course in England the last few months.
When I got home this week, I had a dream of a girl murdered under a Chinese lantern.
You don't believe me.
No, I do.
Well- I think I'm like a lot of people.
I mean, I want to believe in E.
S.
P.
and everything, but- But haven't you ever known when something was going to happen in the future, and then it did? Of course he has.
It happens all the time.
Oops.
Pick me up.
Thanks to me and Ziggy.
Yeah.
That's just psychic ability.
It's perfectly natural.
As natural as Ouija boards and mood rings.
Most people are psychic to some degree.
They just don't believe it.
We gotta talk, Sam.
Ask her to make some more tea or something.
How about some more tea? That'd be great.
Okay.
I'll be right back.
Okay.
That was a coincidence.
That was a coincidence.
- Sam.
- Hmm? Forget it.
You're too old for her.
Come on.
No, I'm not.
I'm- I'm- I'm kind of just right.
Well, you may be, but the guy you leaped into - Dylan Powell.
Dylan Powell's 59 years old.
Uh-huh? He's a month away from retirement.
Retirement? Yeah.
He's been covering San Francisco for 25 years.
His career's been going downhill until his recent coverage of a bizarre serial murderer in Chinatown.
And- Oh, this is- This is weird.
Hmm? Well, it seems that the killer has been calling you and tipping off- Uh, calling Dylan and tipping him to the killings.
That's weird.
And they're all strippers and hookers.
At least until now.
This has gotta be one of the worst things that's ever happened in this city.
So, I must be here to stop the murders, right? Well, never mind the murders.
Hers.
No.
She's the seventh victim.
Well- How soon does it happen? Two weeks.
Two weeks? She must have gotten close to catching the killer, and he came after her.
Come on.
You don't believe in this psychic mumbo jumbo, do you? Excuse me.
Do you like orange spice, Sam? - Sam? - Oh, I'm sorry.
Dylan.
- Why would I call you Sam? - Good question.
Strange.
- Sorry.
- It's okay.
Orange spice is fine.
Okay, good.
Another coincidence? It's gotta be.
Why? Because you don't believe she's psychic? Do you? Well, do you? I'm beginning to.
Well, if she's psychic, how come she doesn't know that she's gonna die? I don't know.
I remember reading somewhere that- that psychics can foresee other people's deaths, but not their own.
Oh, they- Oh, that's convenient.
It- But it still happens on February 14, 1985.
Valentine's Day.
Yes.
Two weeks from now.
It's the night of a full moon.
Why doesn't that surprise me? Al, what are we gonna-Wait a second.
I'll just take her away from here.
Well, you'll save her, but there's four more women that get murdered after her.
You gotta stay here and stop this creep.
Here we go.
Thanks.
Shouldn't be too tough.
Do you feel that? Hmm? What? I don't know, but there's a strange energy in the room.
Strange energy? Yeah, I- I feel that.
Yeah, I, um- Uh- I'm outta here.
I'm gonna go back and - and get Ziggy to dig up some more evidence on this killer.
Sorry.
I must be feeling a little edgy after seeing what that poor girl went through.
I just want to block it out of my mind.
You saw what she went through? When I held her pillow.
Sometimes, by touching a person's things, it triggers certain feelings and visions.
And then the images come- like pieces of a movie in my mind.
And you really think that you can help the police catch this killer? Well, I don't know, but I'll certainly do what I can.
Aren't you afraid, though, that he's gonna, you know, come after you or something? Why? Because he knows that you're helping the police try and catch him and- Oh.
That's if he thinks I'm really psychic.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I get the feeling that you're not completely convinced.
Well, uh- It's been kind of a lot to absorb.
We know so little about the power of our minds.
Yet we dream, we have vivid memories and the ability to imagine and create.
Our psychic powers already exist.
And one day, people will accept them as natural.
If you can sense what's gonna happen in the future, can you see if he's gonna kill again? I think he will, yes.
Do you have any idea who it might be? Mm, I don't know.
It's blank.
I haven't seen it yet.
What is it? Uh, nothing.
I- - What are you doing tomorrow? - Detective Collins asked me to look over some mug shots.
- Can I come with you? - Sure.
- I don't know what he'll say.
- Hmm.
- What the hell are you doing here? - I brought him here with me.
Why? I thought that she might be an interesting angle on the story.
I'll bet.
Look, Detective, we're all after the same thing on this case.
Oh, I think you're after a little more.
Excuse me.
But I can't help you if I don't get some peace here.
Fine.
You can stay.
You leak one little thing, you never do another live report.
You got that? - What is it? - I don't know.
But I'm getting a strong feeling from this one.
- Is that him? - It seems like him, but somehow it isn't.
Maybe it just looks like him.
Stay out of this, Dylan.
I'm getting a strong impression like he's hiding behind this guy.
- Could they be partners? - No.
The guy who killed the girl last night was alone.
It almost seems like a mask he's hiding behind.
Maybe it is.
Dylan.
Turn the page.
This is the guy who killed all those girls? I don't know, but I think he killed the girl last night.
"Tony Beche.
" Put out an A.
P.
B.
I want every officer from Sacramento to Santa Cruz to have his photo.
A 19-year-old girl named Janine Travis was murdered in her apartment yesterday.
The girl had recently moved from Tempe, Arizona, to San Francisco where she had found work as a stripper in a local club.
Police have a prime suspect in the case but are refusing to release any information on his identity at this time.
Stay tuned to this station for further- Dylan, what do you think? Should we use this shot again on the 10:00 news? You okay? You all right? I don't know.
What is it? I guess just seeing that girl last night is giving me a weird feeling about the killer.
You want me to call a doctor or something? Oh, no.
It's okay.
I just need some water.
There's a fountain down the hall on your left.
I'll get you a glass.
No, it's okay.
I just need to step out for a bit.
I'll be right back.
Thanks.
So, uh, I guess you two talked last night, huh? Yeah.
How long? I don't know.
Uh, we talked a couple hours, I guess.
So, are you saying, you, uh- I'm saying that we just talked.
Then something's definitely wrong with you lately, Dylan.
- Uh, ready? - Yeah.
Yeah.
See you tomorrow.
Okay.
It was nice meeting you.
- It was nice meeting you too, Ross.
- Take care of my buddy there.
Okay.
You thinking about the killer? He's out there somewhere.
They'll find him.
You sure? I have- You have a feeling? You read my mind.
When did you first know that you were psychic? Oh.
I always knew certain things without being told.
How old were you when you first found out? - I was seven.
- Seven.
What happened? My mother died.
She left town on a Friday afternoon to visit her sister in Santa Cruz.
That night, I remember being asleep when I heard someone come into my room.
I woke up scared, but then I saw my mother standing there.
I thought she had come home early from her trip.
She told me not to be afraid and that everything was going to be all right because she'd always be there with me.
She kissed me good night, and I remember going back to sleep.
The next morning, I came downstairs and found my father crying.
I'll never forget it because it was the first time I had ever seen him cry.
He hugged me and told me my mother was dead.
Her car had been hit by a drunk driver Friday afternoon.
There was no way she could've been in my bedroom.
- You're sure it wasn't a dream? - No.
She was there.
But the dreams started after that.
I dream all the time now, and some of them come true.
Excuse me.
I didn't mean to upset you.
I'm sorry.
It's all right.
Oh, my God.
What? Who are you? Who are you? I'm Dy-Dylan.
No, you're not.
You're somebody else.
You can, uh- You can see me? Yes, and I've seen you in my dream.
Your dream? I'm floating on a lake looking up at a full moon, and a whirlpool suddenly swirls around me.
I try to swim, but then it pulls me down deeper, into eternal night.
I see a man reach out for me, and he's come from a place far away.
It's you.
Who are you? No, Sam.
No, uh-uh.
You can't tell her.
I'm, uh, tired of pretending.
Then tell me.
If you do, you may not leap.
Well, maybe I don't want to.
Why not? What are you saying, Sam? You're Sam.
No.
Yes.
- Sam, you know the rules.
- I called you by your name last night.
You can still get out of this.
How? Lie.
I just knew.
Works for me.
I'm Sam.
- Sam Beckett.
- Oh! Damn it.
- I can't believe this.
- Neither can I.
How-Why are you here? If you tell her, Sam- If you tell her, I'm history.
I'm here for you.
Sam, I'm not gonna stick around here and watch you two do whatever you're gonna do.
You'd better sit down.
Oh, boy.
Uh- Tamlyn.
- You're gonna be next.
- To die? Yeah.
In- In two weeks.
How do you know? Well, uh- This is, uh, gonna sound a little weird, I think, but, um- I'm from the future.
And you leaped here.
Yeah.
Project Quantum Leap.
It's a time-travel experiment.
See, I'm really from 199- How soon before you leap out? I don't have any control over that.
After I die? No.
You're not gonna die.
Then my future's not predetermined? No, no.
We can change it.
We will change it.
The dark water meant death in my dream.
But I didn't see it.
All I saw was you.
And that's why you didn't know that you were gonna die? My vision gets blurred if I'm not centered and calm.
An intense emotion like fear or love would throw me off.
Love? Yes.
I know the feeling.
Well, golly, Sam, I was gonna ask you how it's going.
But- it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that you're very comfortable here, and- Boxer shorts.
You're wearing boxer shorts in bed? No, I'm- Oh, with-with hearts on.
And little bearsies.
Isn't that cute? They were a gift, okay? Well, happy Valentine's Day.
You had to remind me.
I'm sorry.
Hey, sorry.
But you can't stay here, Sam.
Did you find the killer? No.
Ziggy's got nothin' on this weasel, Tony Beche.
Hey.
Ooh.
You feel a chill in here? Uh.
All right, Sam.
Go on, have your fun.
But you can't stay here.
Yes, I can.
Well, we can fix that.
No, you can't.
Have you thought about the guy you leaped into- that Dylan? Huh? Would you leave him in the waiting room forever? Would you? Wou- Maybe you would.
Maybe I would too.
Tamlyn.
I don't know how much longer I'm gonna be here.
I don't either.
I could leap at any time.
I know, so let's just think of this as a little vacation.
Huh? A little- Now, what are you doing now? Where are you going with her? A little vacation? What's she doin' gettin' onto the bed? Hey.
Now, look- I'm history.
Sam! What is it? Sam, Ziggy found the guy.
Tony Beche? Yeah.
The one who killed the girl? Now get up and get dressed.
Come on.
Let's go.
Yeah.
I gotta go.
Sam? Why? I, uh- I know where he is.
He's hiding in a little motel called The Foghorn.
The Foghorn.
Yeah.
On California? It's 15 blocks from here.
Call the police and tell them where I'm going.
You might get hurt.
No, I'll be okay.
Look, you just stay here, wait for me and lock the door.
No! I'll be okay.
Sam! Go! Good Lord.
Hey! Wait, wait, wait! How much further? He split.
What? He escaped out the back window soon as the police arrived.
Oh, my God.
Hey.
Wait, wait.
You gotta catch him.
He went down the alley to the right.
Right there.
Okay.
Go.
Yeah.
Go! Shh, shh, shh.
Where is he? You went right by him.
What? He's right over there.
Behind those boxes on your left.
Careful.
Tony, come on.
I know you're in there.
Now,just come on out.
It's all over.
All right, Sam.
Good.
Just hold him there.
Let go, man! The cops are gonna be here in one minute.
Hey, man! It's over.
Yeah, it sure is.
It isn't.
Sam, I don't know how to explain this, but Tamlyn still dies.
Let me go, man! What? Let me go! I don't understand it.
Tamlyn's still the seventh victim.
I'm not gonna let you kill her.
Who? Like you killed the others! I didn't kill nobody! You killed six women! Sam, take it easy.
Didn't you? No! Sam! Didn't you? Just-JustJanine! And the others! No, man!Just her! Sam, take it easy.
Okay, buddy, we got him.
His name's Tony Beche.
Put your hands back there.
Be careful with him.
He's crazy, man! Okay, let's go.
Come on.
Let's go.
Cooperate.
Come on.
What the hell's goin' on? I don't know.
He's arrested, and she still gets killed.
That's impossible.
How about if he's not the only killer? Wait a second.
Tamlyn said that she wasn't sure if he killed the others.
He could be a copycat killer.
Yeah, a copycat.
But then the real killer could still be after her.
Oh, my God.
I thought you- Everything's all right.
Shh.
Oh, shh.
Real nice of you to show up, Dylan.
- Where were you last night, buddy? - I was at Tamlyn's.
Did I miss something? Yeah.
My birthday.
- Boy, you must have some spell over him.
- I'm sorry.
I- I didn't know.
I forgot.
I- First time in 25 years.
Look, Ross.
I'm- I'm really sorry.
Hey.
Hey, it's okay.
I stayed up, and I partied with my old friend Jack.
Daniel's.
Hey, you two.
Happy Valentine's Day.
Did I say somethin'? No.
Thank you.
Editing.
- It's him.
- Him? Yeah.
He wants to talk to you.
He-Hello? We're gonna change our little game.
Now listen to me.
I want you to- I always tell you after I silence one of my little darlings.
Now you know before.
Her name is Tamlyn, and she's such a sweet little thing.
You don't have to- Happy Valentine's Day.
Tamlyn.
Tamlyn.
Tamlyn.
Tamlyn, listen to me.
You can't go outside.
I won't.
I just need to wash my face.
I'll be okay.
You okay? What's goin' on? The killer just called and said that Tamlyn's gonna be next.
Al? Where is she killed? She's killed in Chinatown, just like all the other ones.
Why? Because no matter where we go or where we hide, history still says that she's gonna die today, right? Okay.
Yeah.
Then we shouldn't try to run away from her destiny.
We should confront it.
How? Well, maybe- Maybe she can sense where he is.
Uh, no, no, no.
That's a bad idea.
You gotta stay out of Chinatown.
No, Al.
I think you're wrong about that.
I think we've gotta go there.
It's her only chance.
Is he close by? I feel him.
He's everywhere around here.
Look, you don't have to do this, you know? I'm not gonna wait for him to come after me.
Okay, okay.
You just stay close to me, all right? And you'll be okay.
You'll be okay.
What's that? I'm gonna get this bastard on tape.
I'm not sure that's such a good idea.
What, are you kidding? This is our Emmy.
- Oh, all- all right.
- This way.
Tamlyn? He's closer.
He's here.
He's right here.
I'll be right back.
You just stay right here, okay? No.
No, you stay with her.
Stay with her.
But, Dylan- Come here! Don't- Don't hurt me.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Don't worry, honey.
He'll be all right.
What? What's wrong? You love him, don't you? Come on, don't deny it.
I see that look in your eyes.
Yes.
You see? I knew it.
You know, in 25 years, I have never seen him act like this.
Never.
But, I guess, uh, if our partnership is gonna break up, you're a good-enough reason.
I'm not trying to break you guys up.
Really? Kinda seems like that's what's been happening.
I'm sorry.
I need to find Sam- Dylan.
No, no.
He said you'd better stay here.
I think he needs me.
What's the matter? Don't you feel safe with me? Of course.
It's just that- Everything's all right, Tamlyn.
Sam.
Where's-Where's Tamlyn? I don't know.
I left her right here.
A- Alone? No, no.
She was with Ross.
Maybe they went looking for you.
I told them to stay right here.
Run a check on Ross Tyler.
Ross Tyler.
Let's see.
He was divorced 20 years ago.
Spent four years in the army as a e- electronics expert.
Would he know how to hook up a tape machine to a phone? Oh, yeah.
Sure.
Piece of cake.
When he handed me the phone when the killer was on it, I tried to talk to him, but I couldn't because he kept talkin' over me.
You know, like- like- Like a prerecorded message.
Yes, yes! And every time she was around him, she felt sick.
Uh-oh.
Maybe she could sense that he was the killer.
I left her here with him.
You gotta find her, Al.
Quick.
All right.
Gooshie, center me on Tamlyn.
Not her, God.
Please.
Come on.
! Get up here.
! No! Get in here! Oh, okay.
You're alive.
Thank God.
Can you hear me? Can you hear me? Listen.
Don't worry.
Sam will be here any second.
I promise.
Sam.
Turn around, go back the other way.
There's an alley there on your right.
Go right, and there's a factory.
She's up on the roof.
Hurry up.
Go stay with her.
Okay.
You don't have to do this.
Shut up! Hang in there, Tamlyn.
He's comin'.
He's comin'.
He's- Sam! Good girl! Sam! Up here! Help! Oh! Help! Get up, I said! Please! No! Shut up! I told you to shut up! Ross! Don't! Get outta here, Dylan! No, no, no, no! Get outta here! It's over, Ross.
No, not after 25 years.
Why? They fired us.
I got our jobs back.
What are you talking about? They laid us off! I got drunk, and- and I hit that first girl.
Her - Her head smacked the table, and there was so much blood I just couldn't do anything.
You pretended you were someone else, and you called me? Yeah.
Yeah.
We were the first ones to report it.
I got our jobs back, all that attention.
And for that, you killed all those girls.
They were all just hookers.
They were littering the streets, ruining what used to be a great city.
Besides, we're just givin' the public what they want- sex and murder! Ratings, man! Ratings! If people are sick enough to watch it, hell, let's give it to 'em.
Let her go.
No.
She'll tell 'em.
It's too late.
I already told them.
What? What? It was our only chance.
We were on top again.
Let her go, Ross.
It's over.
You're right, buddy.
- It's over.
- Sam! Sam! Let me go! No.
- Then I'm takin' you with me.
- No.
! - Sam! Look out! - Sam! Please! Please! I'm not gonna let you die.
I'm already dead! Geez, Sam, I think it's- Time to go, huh? Uh- I'll never forget you.
You never know.
I- I could come back.
No, you won't.
You're gonna be okay now.
Yes? You sure? I got a feeling about it.
You killed my three brothers, Tyler.
That just leaves you and me.
And this town ain't big enough for the two of us.
Oh, boy.

Oh, boy.
