The Incredible Hulk (1978) s04e13 Episode Script

The First (2)

But you better not do anything against me.
'Cause you know when I get mad what I can do.
(ROARS) It's over, Mr.
Frye.
McGEE: You're the man who becomes the creature.
ELIZABETH: You need the cure, too, don't you? And that's your only chance, isn't it? (ROARS) NARRATOR: Dr.
David Banner, physician, scientist.
Searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have.
Then, an accidental overdose of gamma radiation alters his body chemistry.
And now, when David Banner grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs.
(ROARS) The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter.
Mr.
McGee, don't make me angry.
You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
The creature is wanted for a murder he didn't commit.
David Banner is believed to be dead.
And he must let the world think that he is dead until he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him.
(ROARS) (THUNDER CRASHING) DAVID: Here are some scenes from the last episode of The Incredible Hulk.
LINDA: I'm not going in the Clive house.
People have been killed in there.
(SCREAMING) Oh, God ELIZABETH: Jeffrey told me that his work had led to something terrible.
But he assured me that he'd been able to cure it.
Cure it? Those were Dr.
Clive's words? DELL: With this arthritis, the work comes harder every year.
Forgetting comes easier.
See, there's been something bad been happening here.
It killed my brother.
(SCREAMS) Now what's going on? (DAVID GROANS) Come, I want to help you.
Why don't you stay here? Cure yourself.
I'll help you.
The creature's been seen, and I'd be absolutely helpless without those missing notes.
Those notes aren't missing.
It wasn't Clive who was the thing.
It was me.
That glow.
People saw that back then.
I want the strength again! And you want to live always afraid of being hunted, hurting other people? Like who? That bully Townsend? Yes! He had it coming! Or that kid? WILLIE: Now the sheriff will do something.
Well, if he doesn't, we will.
All these years I kept everything working.
All these years I've waited for this.
For you! You've got to help me.
No.
(GLASS SMASHING) Leave it alone! (SCREAMING) (SNARLING) (YELLING) DAVID: And now for the conclusion of "The First" on The Incredible Hulk.
(GROWLING) (CREATURE ROARS) (GROWLING) (ROARS) (GROWLING) (ROARS) (SQUAWKING) (DELL LAUGHING) (DELL PANTING) You see, the arthritis, it's gone.
It worked.
Yes.
You can't stay like this.
You know that.
Oh, I'm fine.
I have enough of this substance to make serum for both of us, to cure both of us.
Thirty years I've waited for this.
To feel strong! You cure yourself.
I'm not going back.
Mr.
Frye, you could be very dangerous to yourself and to other people.
Thirty years of feeling sick and weak and hurting.
I'm not going back, Doctor.
You're worried about what I did before, huh? Townsend and the kid.
Well, I just want to live my life.
I'm not looking for trouble.
You might not have to.
I'll take the risk.
But you better not do anything against me.
'Cause you know when I get mad what I can do.
BRAD: I don't care what Decker says.
If Case and Willie say they saw that thing, I believe 'em.
They got no reason to make up stories.
That's right.
Why should they? Now, Earl, you saw that thing back then, didn't you? I sure did.
I'll never forget it.
Me, too.
I can't blame Case and Willie for trying to do something.
Decker had no business running those boys in.
They're good boys.
You know, I think this town has waited too long to do something.
We should've burned that Clive house down Run his friends out of town.
Elizabeth Collins and what was his name? The The cripple.
You know, the one with the twisted hands.
(CHUCKLING) BRAD: Say there, you think I'm right? Well, what do you think? I think you better leave me alone, Brad.
Well, now.
Now, now.
Now, what's this? You heard me.
Yeah, I surely did.
I just don't believe it.
You know, Dell, I've been thinking.
Now, you've had a thing for Elizabeth for a long time.
Why don't you get married? Make an honest woman of her.
Then you two could go on a honeymoon, and just stay there.
Oh, and then, I'd be willing to give you a few pointers.
You know, on how to make a woman happy.
(LAUGHING) I don't imagine you've had much experience with things like that.
(BOTH LAUGHING) I bet Elizabeth knows what's what.
Nice-looking woman like her.
Crippled or not, you shouldn't have done that.
You just keep smiling.
Hold it! That's enough.
Let him go.
(SCOFFS) You're making a mistake, Sheriff.
You just keep coming down on the wrong people.
I'm only gonna serve the law, Brad.
That's all.
No mob.
Not while I'm sheriff.
That might not be much longer.
You give me any trouble, and I'll bust you just like I did Case and Willie.
(SNICKERING) Give me a beer, Earl.
Give me a towel.
DAVID: If I could have thought of anything else, I wouldn't have come here.
Dr.
Clive told you that he had done something terrible.
ELIZABETH: Yes.
Well, it was because of his experiments.
Dell Frye was able to metamorphosize into a creature of incredible strength.
And that same creature killed Frank Townsend.
I don't know anything about this.
Jeffrey never gave me any details.
If it's true, Jeffrey cured this thing.
I know he did.
He told me.
Yes.
Yes, he did cure it.
But, because of my help, Dell was able to repeat the process.
I tried to stop him, but it was too late.
I don't understand.
What does this mean? He's very dangerous.
The creature that Dell becomes is guided by his personality.
And Dell Frye is a murderer.
That young boy that was killed a year ago.
Shouldn't you go to the police? I have no proof.
And it could be dangerous.
I mean, if Dell were to metamorphose again, somebody could be killed.
Now, he must be cured.
Now, I have the chemicals to make the serum that Dr.
Clive developed for Dell, but I have to have time, and a safe place to work.
Miss Collins, I know that I'm responsible, like Dr.
Clive was responsible.
I didn't want to get you involved in this.
But he must be cured very soon.
I have no one else to turn to.
Look, I don't know anything about this creature.
If you're looking for a story, you better go someplace else.
Oh, come on, Sheriff.
It's been in your local papers, the two guys who saw the Hulk are in your jail.
Don't tell me there isn't a story here.
The Hulk, huh? Well, is that like Bigfoot? Or Sasquatch? Mr.
McGee, whatever's going on here, it certainly doesn't need any more publicity.
Especially from The Register.
Now, I've got enough trouble on my hands as it is.
Look, Sheriff, this is not just a local story.
This creature has been spotted all across this country.
But I don't care about the rest of the country.
Look, there was some kind of a creature here.
Thirty years ago.
It tied in with Dr.
Clive.
It killed a man, then disappeared.
Some people think that it's come back.
But I don't.
But I do have to make sure that no one else gets hurt.
Let's go.
Leave this alone, Mr.
McGee.
Thirty years! DELL: It's for you.
I bought it for you.
(CHUCKLING) A long time ago.
I guess I forgot to give it to you.
ELIZABETH: That's beautiful.
Please, take it.
All right.
Thank you.
Your arthritis, it's so much better.
(STAMMERING) Yeah, I had treatment.
Good treatment.
But, Elizabeth, that's not all.
I'm different.
And things are gonna be different around here for me, too.
You know how it's been for me, Elizabeth.
I've taken a lot from people in this town.
Well, no more.
(SCOFFS) People They are gonna start respecting me.
Also, I want to tell you that I never could before.
I care for you.
You know, a lot.
Dell, I'm very flattered, but I never stopped caring for Jeffrey, even after all these years.
I'm much stronger now in every way.
I can take care of you.
Please, give me a chance to You'll see.
It has nothing to do with you, Dell.
You must understand that.
You're just trying to be nice.
You don't see.
You're just like everybody else in this damn town! Dell, I'm not like everyone else.
You know that.
I'm sorry if I hurt you.
I'm right.
You'll see.
You'll change your mind.
ELIZABETH: Dell worried me the way he talked, but I couldn't help feeling sorry for him.
How much longer is this going to take? (SIGHS) Well, I think I could have the serum ready by tomorrow.
It won't hurt him, will it? No.
I just can't understand how this could have happened.
Well, Dr.
Clive's work, I thought it could be very important for me for my research.
Dell offered to help.
I'm afraid I didn't see past my own concerns.
I have a medical problem.
(DOORBELL RINGING) Just a minute.
(DOORBELL RINGING) Who is it? McGEE: Miss Collins? Yes? I'm Jack McGee.
I'm a reporter for The National Register.
Do you mind if I come in? I understand that you knew Jeffrey Clive.
He was your fiancé.
What do you want? Well, a lot of people around here seem to think that he was involved in creating some sort of a monster about 30 years ago.
Now, it happens that I've been following something very like that for a long time now.
I'd like to ask you some questions.
Mr.
McGee? Mmm-hmm.
I loved Jeffrey Clive.
I will not help you exploit him.
And most certainly not for The National Register.
Miss Collins, I'm not interested in exploiting Dr.
Clive.
I was having my tea.
I would like to finish.
Tea for two, company coming? My habits are none of your business.
Now, if you don't mind.
Believe me, Miss Collins, I would be the last person to want to harm this creature, or the man who becomes it.
ELIZABETH: I do hope you won't force me to call the police.
No.
This kind of stuff is happening all over.
Honest people, they're the ones that gotta be afraid.
That's right.
People have to protect themselves.
The law sure won't.
Yeah.
(DOOR CHIMES RINGING) (SIGHING) DELL: Give me a beer.
Forget it, Dell.
I'm all out.
DELL: Give me a soda, then.
I'm all out of soda, too.
(LAUGHING) Okay, I'll settle for the company.
Sure is quiet in here.
Even old Brad.
(SCOFFS) Can't understand it.
My coming in usually sparks a few words.
Must've been really something to shut old Brad's big mouth.
(CHUCKLING) You're talking pretty tough, Dell.
What have you got, the sheriff outside? I don't need the sheriff to fight my battles.
Too bad Earl's out of beer.
I'm thirsty.
You don't mind, do you, Brad? Put that down.
Sure.
All these years I thought you were tough.
I hope that wasn't your best shot.
It wasn't.
(DELL GRUNTING) (GROANING) (SCOFFS) So many years I took it.
The last time, Brad.
The last time.
(LAUGHING) (SNARLING) Brad? He had it coming.
You saw what he did.
(GROWLING) (GRUNTS) Any one of you would have done the same.
He's probably not even hurt.
(CREATURE ROARS) (ROARS) (ROARS) (ROARS) (BRAD YELLING) (GROWLING) (ROARS) (WHIMPERING) (ROARS) Okay, Ralph, check the outside door to the basement.
See if there's any evidence of injury.
Why are you still holding me? You let everyone else go.
Well, I just want to hear your story again, Dell.
I told you.
I don't know anything.
Brad hit me.
That's all I remember.
I reckon that That thing was in the storeroom.
And you don't find that coincidental? What do you mean? Well, that, that creature just happens to be in Earl's storeroom when you're here.
And it just happens to kill the man that you're fighting with? I have no real reason to arrest you, Dell.
There's no proof that you're mixed up in this thing.
But I know it.
And so do you.
So, I figure, if you're gone, my problems are gone, too.
So I want you gone, Dell.
You can't just order me out of town.
But I can make your life pretty ugly here.
And I can turn my back when the others do.
So why don't you just make it easy on both of us.
(SIGHS) All right.
I'll go.
But not because of your threats.
You can have this damn town.
I got nothing here.
(DOOR CHIMES RINGING) (DOOR CLOSING) I told you to stay away from this.
I know a lot about this creature.
Maybe I can help.
You mean the circulation of your paper.
Go on, get out of here! Sheriff, I think you must know a little something about the laws in your county.
The press has some rights.
Mr.
McGee, if you're not gone in five seconds, I'm gonna arrest you for interfering with this investigation.
One, two, three, four! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Excuse me, but I saw what he just did in there.
The sheriff's been messing up all along.
And now Brad Wheeler's dead.
Brad was my friend.
Oh, yeah? Yeah, I'll help if I can.
Well, good.
What went on in there? Brad and Dell Frye were fighting.
Brad hit Dell and knocked him into the storeroom.
A few seconds later, that That thing came out.
Was anybody else in the storeroom? No.
You're sure? I'd just been in there.
Okay, this Dell Frye, do you know where I can find him? Oh, I sure do.
You're preparing two syringes.
I didn't understand your involvement until now.
You need the cure, too, don't you? And that's your only chance, isn't it? Why do you wait? Why don't you treat yourself first? According to Clive's notes, the cure incapacitates the patient for 48 hours.
I cannot risk Dell staying the way he is for another two days, especially after what happened at the store.
We'll have to sedate him in order to get him to the lab.
Why don't you give him the serum here? The serum must be administered in conjunction with the x-ray.
I want you to call Dell, tell him you've changed your mind and ask him to meet you here.
You mean, trap him? Yes.
I don't like doing that, David.
Elizabeth, I understand and I'm sorry.
But there's no other way.
All right.
(SIGHS) (KNOCKING AT DOOR) Yeah? I'm looking for Dell Frye.
That's me.
What do you want? I was expecting a younger man.
Dark brown hair What is this? It's over, Mr.
Frye.
Give it up.
Who are you? What do you want? I'm Jack McGee.
You know that.
You know why I'm here.
You're John Doe.
You're the man who becomes the creature.
I do know who you are, Mr.
McGee.
I've read your articles.
I'm sure you have.
You've made a mistake, but I can help you.
I'm not this Hulk thing, but I know the man who is.
I worked with him.
He's left town, but I can help you track him.
It's all right, John.
I know all about it.
I know about your struggle, about the creature's sudden appearances For once, at least, I arrive before you get a chance to leave town.
Now, give it up.
(PHONE RINGING) Hello.
Elizabeth? You have? Yes, of course.
I'll be right there.
I've got to go.
I can't let you do that.
Now, your creature has committed murder.
That's twice that I know of.
I can't just let that pass.
Mr.
McGee, this This thing, it's very strong, isn't it? Unpredictable.
Dangerous.
Aren't you afraid? I don't want to use this.
Now, believe me, it's over.
All right.
This has It has gone on too long.
I'll tell you everything.
Just let me make a call and finish packing.
DELL: Better pack, we've got to go.
ELIZABETH: In a minute.
I wasn't surprised, you know.
Remember, I told you, you'd change your mind.
Well, you made the right choice, Elizabeth.
I am a powerful man.
A very powerful man.
We can get even now.
They can't hurt me now.
You and me, we can have anything we want.
(GRUNTS) I'm sorry.
I'm so sorry.
DELL: It won't work! (BOTH GRUNTING) DELL: You can't stop me! Nobody can stop me! ELIZABETH: No.
Please, Dell, stop! Stop! David! Please stop! (DELL GRUNTING) He's all right.
He's just unconscious.
I didn't have much sedative.
I don't know how long he's going to stay out.
We'd better hurry.
I'll get the car.
Here.
Believe me, Sheriff, this creature is a man who goes through some kind of a transformation.
Now, I have seen that happen.
That man is Dell Frye.
Mr.
McGee, have you any idea what you're asking me to believe? Well, do you think you can afford not to believe it? You've got a murder on your hands here.
Well, what you're saying, it crossed my mind.
But let's just say it's true.
How are you gonna prove it in a court of law? I don't know.
All I know is that this man should be picked up.
He's dangerous.
I've got proof of that.
It is just a matter of time before he kills somebody else.
Supposing that I swear out an assault warrant against him.
Well, okay.
Then I could pick him up.
All right, you've got it.
Well, do you know where he was headed? The phone call came from somebody named Elizabeth.
He said he'd be right over.
Let's go inside.
DECKER: Hey, McGee.
Yeah.
DECKER: Blood.
Tell me more about that phone conversation.
It was just a few seconds.
That's Frye's bag.
Maybe he's coming back here.
Well, I wanna know where he's gone.
There's a bunch of lab equipment in the next room.
Why do you suppose she'd have that? Well, that was in the old house.
Yeah, but this stuff looks like somebody's been using it recently.
Everything seems to point back to the Clive house.
Or to the lab.
This thing is so important, he'd do anything to keep it.
What about the x-ray? We have to wait a few seconds till the serum starts working.
No, no! No! No! Dell, please.
Please let this happen.
No! No, please help me.
I'm trying to.
Elizabeth, turn on the x-ray machine.
No! No, Elizabeth, no! Please! No! Turn it on.
No! No! No! Please! DELL: Elizabeth, no.
Elizabeth! DELL: No, please! No.
No.
Elizabeth! No! No! (HIGH-PITCHED SOUND) No! Please! No! No! No! (GROWLING) (ROARS) (CREATURE SNARLING) (SNARLING) DAVID: Elizabeth, come over to me.
Slowly, slowly.
(ROARS) No! No! No! (SOBBING) No! DAVID: No! No! No! (ROARS) (CREATURE ROARS) (ROARS) (HULK ROARS) (ROARS) (BOTH GROWLING) (GROWLING) ELIZABETH: Don't shoot him! DECKER: Move aside, Elizabeth.
No! He hasn't hurt anybody.
The murder at the house last year, it was Dell.
He He admitted it to the other man.
And it was Dell's creature that murdered Brad Wheeler.
The other man was with me at the time.
Is there anything else? Just that I'd like Dell to be buried in a nice grave.
I'll pay for it.
Miss Collins, why are you so interested in protecting this other man? He's a very kind, very gentle man.
This creature that he becomes saved my life.
Miss Collins, this man is very dangerous, and he needs help.
He wants to do it himself.
You should leave him alone, Mr.
McGee.
(SIGHING) I can't, Miss Collins.
No matter what you think, no matter how gentle this man may have seemed to you, the Hulk is a very real danger.
And I will not leave him alone.
