Heartland (CA) s04e15 Episode Script

The River

Previously on "Heartland": $150,000 horse and the big man's daughter you pull this off, you'll look like a genius.
I've never, never had a client that didn't become a better rider in the first day, and the secret is this new bit.
I wanna know what's going on, and most importantly, I wanna know why you didn't tell me? Bedford Oil is about two days away from insolvency; That's personal and professional bankruptcy.
I'm broke.
Well, then you have to go there.
I'm actually getting better! Watch this! Riana don't do the big jumps; We haven't worked on them yet! Pull him up! Stewart: Riana! Your job was to get them ready for competition in two weeks, but instead you managed to injure them both.
I made you into the Miracle girl I can unmake you.
Keep goin'.
You can do it.
You're all right.
You're okay.
Hey! Well, if it isn't the honeymooner! Yeah! Just got back last night.
So Italia.
Well, my friend, if you think you know Italy because you've been to a couple of pizza joints, think again.
So it's not all about the pie then? No.
No, it is not.
Take Rome, for instance.
Three million people; Two million of them are statues.
And most of them don't wear pants.
Is it true you're suing Amy? You can't do that! Riana, I paid $150,000 for a horse that may be ruined.
I can't let that go.
But it was my fault! I was trying to show off for you so you wouldn't be mad.
Amy was just trying to help.
She knew I wasn't good enough to compete on Addison.
Everybody knew except you.
You are the one who wants me to be a Grand Prix jumper.
I just I just wanted you to be proud of me For something, that's all.
Look, once your wrist is healed No, dad, I'm tired of trying.
I don't wanna ride anymore ever.
Caleb: How's things going here? What's with all the new colts? Those aren't just any colts.
Those are Chase Powers' signature colts.
Amy's working with one right now.
Amy's starting colts for Chase? Ty: Yeah, and he's selling them on his website.
She doing all the work and he's getting all the glory.
Well, it sounds like a sweet deal for him, but it doesn't really seem like something Amy would go for.
Yeah, well, welcome home.
So you guys are? No.
I still don't know why a man trying to ruin us gets invited over for tea.
The very fact that Stewart even accepted our invitation shows that he's trying to be reasonable.
You know, he probably wants to avoid this whole court thing as much as we do.
If the man's so reasonable, why did he get his lawyer to write this letter? Because that's how it's done.
Really? Suing us for loss of use, damages, pain and suffering Okay, grandpa, just remember that this is just a negotiation.
It's just about money and we're not going to get emotional.
Well, of course not.
Because nobody ever gets emotional about money.
Come on Will Amy be joining us? Uh, no.
Um, she has a very busy schedule.
I was surprised to see her still working with horses.
What is that supposed to mean? Just that news travels fast.
It seems to me that all of us here are interested in the same thing: A quick resolution.
Yes, well, anything to avoid the cost and unpleasantness of a lengthy court case.
Something we can all agree on.
Stewart: Which is why I'm willing to overlook damages and settle for the cost of the horse.
Write me a cheque for $150,000 and I'll be happy to call it a day.
Well, that is one hell of a day.
Okay.
Uh wait! Let's just talk about this.
We're all adults here.
Let's be reasonable.
Stewart, this is not just about money.
My sister has a gift you've seen it and that lawyer's letter, it paints her as some kind of criminal, and that is so not true.
Amy puts her heart and her soul into every animal that she touches and she would never ever do anything to harm any animal.
And this whole lawsuit is just completely bogus.
It's okay, it's all right.
All right, clearly this is getting us absolutely nowhere.
You got that right, so I'm callin' it a day and showing you the door! No.
No, don't bother.
I'll find my own way out.
Grandpa, I blew it! What is wrong with me? Well It seems pretty obvious, doesn't it? It must've been quite the adjustment for Ashley, going from all that first-class living back to the trailer.
Yeah, well, she's actually still there, in Tuscany, with her mom.
With her mom? Yeah.
It's just for another week or so though.
Amy: Hey! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Amy! Whoa! Whoa! Amy! - Are you okay? - I'm fine.
I said I'm fine.
Look, I got caught up in the lines, all right? It happens.
No big deal, unless one of you wants to sue me for being incompetent.
and at the break of day you sank into your dream you dreamer oh, oh, oh you dreamer you dreamer Wow.
You did this? It's incredible.
You're incredible! I just thought it was good retail to have your stuff in a high-traffic area.
Or, or maybe this just means that you and I can look into the future and see a day when folks won't just be coming to my clinics or seeing my stuff at the local store, but they'll be surfing my website, riding my signature horses, and sitting on Chase Powers' signature saddles.
Embracing the Chase Powers' lifestyle 24/7.
Or just embracing Chase Powers 24/7.
Well, I'm sorry you feel that way.
Yes, I will send you a refund on your deposit.
Oh What was that about? Oh, just another cancellation.
You know, it's like everyone thinks this lawsuit is a done deal.
So I take it the meeting didn't go very well? It might have gone better if you were there.
I told you, I can't stand to be in a room with Stewart Forrest.
Well, it turns out, neither can I.
At least now we know where we stand.
We need a good lawyer.
Can we afford one? What we can't afford is to lose, which reminds me, we need Chase as a witness.
Did you talk to him? I will, okay? Just don't bug me about it.
Okay.
It just seems like lately if I don't bug you But, you know, you could just take a break.
What do you mean? Like stop working? Admit defeat, or worse, guilt? Because, you know, I don't think I've done anything wrong, Lou, but maybe you do? Amy Is that what you're trying to tell me? No.
No.
Of course I'm not saying that.
Chase: It's all Soraya's idea.
Well, except for this handsome devil.
I'll take full ownership of him.
Oh, and check this out: Chase Powers' Signature Horses, trained by a Chase Powers' Signature Trainers; That would be you.
Hey, Soraya.
Hey.
This is pretty cool.
Thanks.
I heard about the legal thing.
I can't believe they're going through with it.
Yeah.
Me neither.
Hey, Amy, speaking of these horses, when do you think you'd have them ready? I've got serious buyers lined up.
I'm sorry.
I didn't know there was a deadline.
Yeah.
Come on, Chase.
I mean, Amy doesn't need any more pressure.
No, no.
No pressure.
I was just asking.
Well, they're coming along and I love working with them.
I really appreciate how you stuck with me even after everything that's happened.
But, Chase, I might need your help with my case.
What does it have to do with me? Well, I was using your "power bit" on Stewart's horse, and the lawyers might make a big deal about that.
Right, but you and I both know that this is just an ordinary bit.
There is no way it had anything to do with the girl's accident.
Well, I know, but I might need you to actually say that if this goes to court.
Sure.
Whatever.
I'll do everything I can.
Okay.
Thanks.
Yeah.
No.
I am aware that the condo market is soft.
But come on, this isn't an offer, this is a joke.
No, I can tell you right now my husband did not get where he is buying high and selling low, so this offer is just a waste of everybody's time.
So he's already accepted the offer? No.
No, no, no.
It's fine.
Yeah.
No problem.
Mm-hm.
Okay.
Talk soon.
Hey, Amy! Riana, hi.
I was just thinking about how I should call you and here you are.
How weird is that? Very.
Um, is your arm any better? Yeah.
It only hurts when I sleep on it funny.
That's good.
So you can start riding again.
No way.
My dad is obviously on my case, but I don't want to anymore.
Why? You love riding.
Used to.
And you were really helping me get somewhere with Addison, but now, with everything that's happened If my dad knew I was even talking to you I mean, the whole thing, it just sucks.
I know it does.
You know, the next time you think about calling me, don't just think about it, okay? See you.
Now, shouldn't you be in bed? After all, you're sleeping for two now.
I was going to call Peter, but I realized that I have no idea what to say to him right now.
You know, I actually thought that he could go back to Dubai and wave a magic wand and save his company.
But obviously that is not going to happen.
I just, I wish that he could just let me know what's going on; Keep me in the loop.
Well, maybe he doesn't want to upset you.
Yeah, it was better to hear it from his real estate agent that he sold the condo for less than he bought it for.
And after the liens are discharged, grandpa, there is nothing left.
Well, that could be a problem if you were dependent on a husband financially, or if you didn't have a dude ranch and a family business to run.
Yeah, that could be ruined by a lawsuit.
It's not gonna happen.
Grandpa, I can't help but feel like this is the worst possible time to have a baby! Oh, honey Lou, stay here! What happened? Bear.
When they're getting ready to hibernate, they will eat anything that isn't locked up.
Well, they sure like Lou's strawberry jam.
Jam! You know, I reminded that newlywed to make sure he locked up.
But He must have other things on his so-called mind.
Well, that was pretty crazy about that bear last night.
I'm off to school, man.
Yeah, you know The whole thing kinda got me thinking.
Just about bears because of the way they work.
They don't mate for life the way people are supposed to.
I mean, when a female bear is in season, it's like la dolce vita for any male that's in the area.
You mean even if she has a papa bear back in the trailer? Geez! You've been on your own way too long, man.
Yeah, well, I'm not going to pretend I'm not a little bit put off.
I just get back om my honeymoon and my wife is M.
I.
A.
Not exactly, man.
There's phones in Italy.
You can call her.
Yeah, I try, but There's this time zone thing, and I don't think her cell works too good in Italy.
Relax, man, she's with her mom.
What do you got to worry about? Yeah, I guess it's only another week or so.
Exactly.
See ya.
See you, man.
Idiot! Thank you again for helping out here.
Yeah.
Chase? Hey.
What's going on? Uh, there's uh A situation.
It's only temporary.
I talked to my lawyer and he advised me that, just to be on the safe side, I should take the horses back to my place.
Listen, I told you they're not ready to go.
I'm still working with them.
That'll do it.
Thanks.
Um, look, I'll pay you for the work you done.
No, they're not ready to go.
It's not about the horses.
It's just a bad time to be in business together.
Look, it's nothing personal.
It's just my reputation is everything.
I can't afford to get mixed up with something that might wreck it.
Or someone who might wreck it? You didn't have to help Chase Powers load his damn horses in the trailer! You want me to do my job or not? Besides, I was happy to see the cowboy leave.
- Face it, Amy - Face what? Well, when it comes to horses, you don't exactly share the same philosophy.
Oh, Caleb Odell talking philosophy? Are you still gonna be philosophical when you lose your job because we lose our business and can't afford to pay you?! Yes, I will, and you should be too.
Since when are you all about the money? I'm not.
But maybe I should be.
Maybe that's my problem.
No.
Amy, that's what makes you different.
You know, I can get all of these products online for half the price, right? Yes, but without the personal service and connection to your local merchants.
Yeah, yeah, I get it.
But I really have to start doing something to cut back on expenses.
Amy told me about the lawsuit and Chase said he would go to bat for her.
Yeah.
He really hit one out of the park.
What do What do you mean? He told me he'd do everything he could to help her out.
Oh, he did? Well, I was I was there.
Well, obviously you weren't there when he came and dragged all of his horses out this morning.
I-I swear, Lou, I didn't know anything about that.
Big surprise a guy not telling his girl what's really going on.
Uh, you beat me to it.
Yeah.
Hey, I couldn't help but noticing, there's a few less horses here than when I left.
Chase took them back.
Oh, that's too bad.
I can see you're all broke up about it.
He really stood by her when she needed help.
Yeah, well, I'm not much of a fan either, but he was sending a lot of business her way.
So, if I were you, I'd wipe that smug grin off your face before I went in the house.
Is something wrong with your chili, grandpa? Oh no Except Well, where's the beef? There is no beef, but there's plenty of quinoa.
It's a seed with a very high protein count.
Lou's gone vegan.
Meatless Mondays.
At least try it.
Fine, but don't you think that working people and pregnant women need something substantial at the evening meal? There is going to be some changes around here, and this is just one of them.
We're gonna start buying everything in bulk or no-name, and bartering for goods and services whenever possible.
Okay? This meal costs less than that beer you're washing it down with.
Oh, I think I might be needing another one of these, Look, I'm sorry, you guys.
This is just how it's going to be, okay? Even if we dodge this lawsuit, the legal bills alone can sink us.
I get it, Lou.
I made a mistake and now you all have to pay for it.
Nobody is blaming you Amy, there's just a lot of stuff happening all at once.
I brought you some chili.
Thank you.
It's actually pretty good.
Are you okay? You know, I don't know how my mom did it.
I took a whole year off school so I could see what I could do, and all I can manage is to screw up.
Come on, Amy.
You don't need those big clinics or the brand name horses.
Your mom never did.
Ty, I am not like her.
If I was, I wouldn't have gotten involved with Stewart Forrest.
I just, I felt all this pressure about the money and making a name for myself and You know, maybe Maybe it's good thing my mom's not here.
She can't see how bad I've screwed up.
Hey It's okay.
It's okay.
Come on, Spartan.
Mornin', Jack.
Lou.
What do you got there? Oh, uh, I signed for it on my way in.
I don't know what it is.
I thought I'd save the courier a trip down the driveway.
It's official.
That creep has gone ahead and sued us.
You know, I had a chance to negotiate my way out of this thing and instead I blew it, grandpa! Well, Stewart Forrest was not gonna settle, no matter what.
Maybe if I hadn't started to cry.
I can't believe I did that! Relax, Lou, everyone knows that pregnant ladies are drama queens.
Oh, is that so? Because I'll have you know that there are pregnant women who are running major corporations.
There are pregnant women in the Olympics.
There are even pregnant women in the army.
You know what? You can bet that they don't start to cry every single time that things get rough! And guess what? Neither will I! Do you ever eat at home with your wife? Oh, it's a long story, Jack.
You're okay, you're okay.
What's wrong? Go on.
We'll go this way.
Let's go.
Hey what's wrong? You're okay Hey, how's it going, babe? If you're so interested, you would have returned my calls.
I've been kind of busy.
With the horses you took back from Amy? Come on, Soraya.
Lou told me Amy is devastated.
All right, look.
I know Amy's your friend and all, but The truth is I did her a favour.
By taking all her business away? I wasn't gonna say anything but The truth is, with this lawsuit and everything, Amy's been totally burnt out.
Working with these horses, it's just been too much for her.
Come on, it's not like I'm gonna give the job to another trainer.
I'm just waitin' until this whole thing blows over and she gets back on her feet.
When do you get off work? Can I help you? Hi.
You're Amy's sister.
Lou, right? Yeah.
I'm actually looking for your dad.
Is he around? Uh, I don't know.
Maybe his office.
I'll check the arena.
Uh, hang on a sec.
Is that Addison in there? It is, isn't it? Oh Amy is gonna be so happy to hear that the horse is better.
Do you mind if I take a picture? Amy would love to see a picture.
Ms.
fleming! Stewart! Great, you're here.
You know, I would have called first this is private property! But I kind of figured you wouldn't take my call.
Get out! Now! Before I call the police! Thanks, Riana.
I know that was Addison in the arena.
Oh, do you know much about horses, Ms.
fleming? He looked like he was jumping and he didn't seem to be hurting.
Oh, so you know what a horse like Addison can do? He's a metre-40 jumper, and now he can barely clear a two-foot fence.
I might not be up to speed on all of the details, but I can tell when someone is using a frivolous lawsuit as some kind of a cash grab.
Look, dear, I don't blame you for being upset; Nobody likes to go to court, and I understand this is a delicate time for you.
You are wrong on so many levels.
I love a good lawsuit, especially when the other side has no case.
So bring it on, because it is going to get ugly and the gloves are coming off.
No more little miss nice guy.
Oh, and by the way, don't you ever, ever call me dear, Stewie.
You know, I used to love to ride, and I was even getting good! But you you and this stupid lawsuit, you've ruined everything! Now, come on, Riana.
Get away from me! I hate you! Easy! You're okay.
It's okay, it's okay, it's okay, boy.
There's nothing there.
You're fine.
Stay! Whoa! Stay! It's okay! Spartan, Spartan, whoa! Whoa! Ungh! Ty: Hey, man, you need a hand? I'm not gonna say no, since Amy has taken a mental health day.
What? She's still out on a ride.
Really? She left pretty early.
Well, I don't know what to tell you.
She's an independent lady.
Got lots on her mind.
So, so what if she wants to stays out a little longer, if that's what she wants to do? Maybe.
I'm gonna take Harley and go look for her.
At your own peril.
What are you talking about? Well, you don't want to be all overprotective.
She'll just get mad and say she needs space.
Trust me on this one.
Is something going on with Ash? Always, but this time, I just I don't know.
Later, man.
We'll grab some beers, I promise.
Girl: Amy, wake up! Wake up! Please, wake up! Hey! Hey! Come on, we have to get out of here.
Take my hand.
We can't be here anymore.
Quick.
Come on, Kindling.
Let's get going.
Did you see that? This is a very dangerous place.
You have to go home.
You don't belong here.
Amy! Amy! Wait! Stop! Did you hear that? No, Amy, we have to keep going.
Amy! Spartan Hey, Spartan, hey.
Come on, come on.
You have to go this way.
Ty: Amy! Amy: Wait! Ty? Yeah! Come on! It is this way! Aren't you coming? It's okay.
I'll be right here watching you.
Cross the river; You'll be okay.
Amy! Hey! Amy! Hey Ty? - You okay? - Ty? You must have had a bad fall.
Where is she? Who? What are you talking about? The little girl.
Jack, I'm gonna need your help.
Amy? Amy, how does your head feel? What is your name? And do you know why I'm asking you these questions? Amy: In here, Lou.
What's going on? Amy's just telling me about a dream she had when that damn bear spooked her horse.
Yeah, but You know, it wasn't like a dream.
There was this little girl and she told me to come with her because the bear was still around.
And she had the cutest name for her pony.
Um Kindling.
What did she look like, this this little girl? Amy: Um, well, she had blonde hair in braids and a red cowboy hat, and she had this jacket with fringes.
And, you know, as long as I was with her, I was safe.
And I could hear Ty calling me, and I wanted to go to him across the river, but the little girl told me that she couldn't come with me.
Grandpa, what are you looking for? I think it's in here.
There's a picture in here I took that picture.
Your mom was ten-years-old and Kindling was her all time favourite pony.
Hey Hey how're you doing? How'd you sleep? Fine, but I can't drive anywhere though.
That's 'cause the doctors said you're supposed to take it easy.
Ty, something happened to me yesterday.
Yeah, you bonked your head pretty hard, Amy.
No, not just that.
You know, I realized what was important.
It's like you said about my mom; That she wasn't about deadlines and money and reputation.
Come on, I need you to drop me off.
There's somewhere I've got to be.
You know, I think Amy must have seen that picture of mom.
Well, that's that's one explanation.
What have you done to my coffee? I bought in bulk; It's much cheaper.
Oh, Lou, now you're messing with my coffee.
Because I've seen that picture, and I mean there's lots more pictures of mom with Kindling.
I mean, come on, grandpa, you don't think that Mom was I mean, there With her pony.
You know, I've lived long enough to learn that we don't go through this life alone.
And well, it comforts me to think that Marion is still part of the lives of the people she loved.
Oh, grandpa.
You know You know, especially now, I think about mom all the time.
Well, so do I.
I don't get it.
The bits have been flying off the shelves.
Yeah.
That's the problem.
My lawyer's told me to pull the bits.
Stewart Forrest's lawyers are gonna be looking at my DVDs, my product line, trying to poke holes in everything I do.
It's too risky.
Okay, well, not that it matters, but it looks a lot worse you leaving Amy out to dry than to take a risk and help your friend.
Look It's nothing personal.
I just can't afford to have my name my name associated with hers right now.
What happened to Chase'n'Amy? 'Cause back then, you couldn't do enough for her.
Why is this coming up now? It's ancient history.
It's still pretty fresh in my mind.
Okay, yes, I had a thing for Amy once, but that was before I got a chance to know you.
You know, I wish I could believe you, but the more I think about it, I just I'm tired of being Chase Powers' second choice.
You're breaking up with me? What about the merchandise? Hey! You're gonna have to pay for that.
Yeah? So sue me! Where're you goin' with that?! Hey! Riana? - Hey.
- Hey.
Guess you're looking for my dad.
I'm sorry he was so rude to your sister.
Lou can take care of herself.
But actually, I came to talk to you.
Okay.
I just want you to know that we can still work together.
- Really? = Yeah.
And it doesn't have to be about show jumping or competition.
Any time you wanna ride, you can just come over and ride with me.
Yeah, I guess If my dad ever backs off.
It's so not fair what he's doing.
I made sure Lou saw Addison.
You can see him too.
You can even ride him if you want.
Riana, he's your horse.
The whole reason we started this was so that you could be the one who would ride him.
Amy: Now, this is something my mom used to do.
You take away the saddle, and you can begin to build an honest relationship with your horse.
It's kind of scary.
Not when you have a bond.
You trust him and he trusts you.
Okay, I want you to pick up a nice, easy canter.
Now, when you're ready, I want you to take the jumps.
I feel like I'm flying.
This is great, Amy.
Ty: So what's going on, man? I talked to Ashley last night.
Suppose to be coming home in a couple of days, but now she wants to stay for another week or so.
Well, I guess there's more to see in Italy.
Well, that's what she said.
So what's the problem? I don't know, maybe nothing.
But if you saw the way Ashley took to those fancy hotels in Rome and hanging out with this Marco guy and his rich family in Tuscany When it came time to come home, and she wanted to stay longer What could I say? Well, what did you say? I said there was only so much Linguini vongole a cowboy could eat.
That's probably true.
Seriously though, have you ever heard of a bride not coming back on her honeymoon with her husband? Well, there was this movie once about a honeymoon killer.
None of his wives ever came back.
It'll be fine, man.
She's with her mom.
It's only for another week, right? I suppose you're right.
It'll be fine.
Stewart, what are you doing here? My daughter told me she would never get on a horse again, and then I saw her working with you.
So you were there? She was relaxed, she was happy, she was making real progress.
And then I realized why I'd hired you in the first place abd that maybe I was the problem all along.
Lou:So what are you going to do to make this right, Stewart? Well, I suppose I could call my lawyers, but Let's make this simple.
So dropped the lawsuit, huh? Guess you can be pretty persuasive after all.
Mm-hm.
Even at this delicate time.
You know, when Lyndy called me to tell me she was pregnant, I was stuck in some crummy motel, living on day money.
I could barely afford the gas to get from one rodeo to the next.
And I tried to be real upbeat on the phone, but Boy, I couldn't help thinking that this could not have happened at a worse time.
I know what you're trying to say, grandpa; There is no good time to have a baby.
No.
No, Lou.
What I'm trying to say is, that for two people in love, like you and Peter, there's no bad time.
'Cause all the small stuff, well It just takes care of itself.
How about some coffee, old man? I'll even splurge on the good stuff.
Ooh! I wouldn't say no to that.
When we're close when we're far Did I ever thank you for rescuing me? Not yet.
Well thank you.
It's not a problem.
You will never be alone I will love you Next Sunday Appreciate the sacrifice you made.
A local hero returns to a new life.
You can totally ride again.
Announcer: Or a new beginning.
As far as I'm concerned, I should have never let you talk me into this.
You know what, I'm gonna give you one more shot.
