60 Minutes

1 I think you should go.
We're here to see one of my students play.
We're not going anywhere.
You're still teaching? Previously on "A Million Little Things" What would you say about stepping in to teach my elective arts class? I didn't know how to manage my bipolar disorder, not like I do now.
And it created a lot of chaos and drama in my life.
I was in for three years.
I promised Vali I'd be out for her 13th birthday.
And when I finally did get out, she didn't want me in her life anymore.
Why were you at the doctor? - Uh, the truth is - We're trying to have a baby.
I need to talk to you about Peter Benoit.
Okay, what lies is that guy telling now? None.
He's dead.
Anna? Eddie, hey.
I'm sorry.
I was just trying to get ahold of you all day.
I didn't know where you were.
- Maggie Bloom? - That's us! Cheat towards the camera.
Will you stop filming? You're gonna jinx it.
What, and not capture for all posterity the magical moment where the doctor tells us that you're - Ah-ah-ah.
- Healthy.
I was going to say "healthy," because you are.
So much so that if I had to guess, I'd say you're definitely going to have - Gary! - An amazing time that - needs to be on camera.
- Thanks, Dwayne.
I can do this all day long.
Uh, let's not.
Hey, guys.
Sorry, crazy morning.
But I'm ready for my close-up.
Yeah, you are! Get in here! Good thing I got to the makeup chair.
And I'm sitting.
You okay there? What happened? Oh, uh, we were doing our homework, and he tweaked his back trying a move that we haven't done in while.
- Oh.
- Alright, Doc, come on.
Give us the good news.
We're ready.
Unfortunately, you guys aren't pregnant.
I'm sorry.
I know it's disappointing, but I am not worried, and you shouldn't be either.
These things take time.
And at least we know you guys can do it, because you got pregnant last year.
Oh, uh, technically, w-we didn't get pregnant last year.
There's, um There's a very fertile guy across the pond who's responsible for that while we were broken up.
Gives a whole new meaning to the term "British invasion.
" Sorry.
No, I'm I'm sorry.
That That was my mistake.
In that case, Gary, we should have you checked.
Sure.
But what does that entail, exactly? Well, you produce a semen sample so we can check your sperm count and motility.
And you have two options.
You can provide that sample here in the office, or Option B.
Whatever Option B is, I'll take it.
Alright.
Yes, of course.
I will.
You take care, too, Carol, okay? Alright, bye.
You okay? Who was that? My mother-in-law.
Ex-mother-in-law.
Peter's death hit her pretty hard.
You have the right to grieve, too, you know.
I grieved the man that I thought he was a long time ago.
Now, I want to focus on moving forward.
I like that.
You can move on to get the life that you deserve, you know? Like dating an incredibly handsome ex-rock star with a disability.
But since the drummer from Def Leppard is taken, you're gonna have to settle for me.
You're sweet.
Sticky sweet? From your head to your feet.
Love that song.
Well Since you are ready to move forward, I was thinking maybe now's a good time to meet Theo? Really? I would love that.
But what about Katherine? I kind of get the impression that she's not my biggest fan.
Let me worry about Katherine.
You worry about what you want for dinner tonight.
I hope it's meatloaf and lava cake.
Theo talked me into getting an air fryer.
Apparently, you can cook them both in the same compartment.
Well, then, I think it's clear what we're having for dinner.
Takeout, because you are definitely blowing up that air fryer.
Oh, boy.
Whoo! Looking good, Mr.
Howard! First day of school.
Gotta make an impression, you know? Yeah.
So, what's a girl gotta do to get home-schooled? Uh, well, you know, she's got to register with the school district with a note from her parents.
Mnh.
I'm not good at roleplaying.
No, you are not.
Mwah! You okay? Yeah, yeah.
I'm I'm just I'm just I'm You know, it's just hitting me.
What made me think this was gonna be a good idea? I spent 30 years trying to get away from Sussex Prep.
Why did I agree to go back every single day? Because you want to shape young minds and set a better example for them than Dennings did for you.
Baby, those kids are gonna love you.
Word to the wise as someone that knows teenagers, first class, find the biggest, baddest dude, take him out.
Thank you for the prison rules.
High school is designed to prepare you for prison.
Speaking of which, don't you have school? It's my work-study day.
I'm helping Gina on the food truck.
Get some class credit, get cash, and buy some fresh kicks.
Or college textbooks.
Y-Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That, too.
So, where'd you and Val decide to park today? We found a great spot on Camden and 4th - near Lasalle High School.
- Ahh.
Good call, 'cause public school cafeterias are the worst.
We're gonna rake it in.
Might buy myself two pairs of fresh shoe - Textbooks.
- Mm-hmm.
Two pairs of textbooks.
Hey, hey, hey ♪ So, what happened with you and that drummer guy after the show last night? Mm.
Nothing.
I just gave him my number.
Oh, so that's what you were writing in his mouth with your tongue.
You saw that? I didn't see anything.
Who's that? Uh, my old music teacher.
Oh, he died? That's so sad.
Were you guys close? No.
Dad! Hey, buddy! Oh! You're just in time for breakfast.
We're having pancakes.
Oh, well, maybe I should grab my spatula.
We both know my pancakes are way better than Mom's.
Yeah, but Greta's are fluffy and amazing.
You hungry? I got a short stack right here with your name all over it.
I'm good, thanks.
Greta's breakfast is one of the bennies of her living with us.
Another is I'm teaching him cool words like "bennies.
" Greta, shower's free.
Great, I'll head up right now.
Hey! This is a surprise.
Sure is.
- How's your back? - Oh, I'll live.
How you holding up? Mm.
I just really thought today was gonna be the day.
It'll happen, okay? 'Cause I'm gonna do everything I can to make sure you get very pregnant very soon.
You are taking this so seriously.
It's like you're planning a sperm heist.
That's right.
I call it "Ocean's 11 Million.
" You heard the doc.
As soon as all my little Gares are in that cup, I have 60 minutes to get it to the lab.
I don't know why you couldn't have just provided your sample at the clinic.
He said they had a fine array of DVDs.
Yeah, that like a thousand other dudes have touched.
No, thank you.
I require a home field advantage, which brings me to the business at hand.
You know, we could make this a team effort.
- Mm-hmm.
- Okay.
But y-you should know that it clearly states, if I receive assistance, the other person must be "fully nude.
" Well, if the instructions say so, then who am I to argue? Oh, uh, I do I have to be at work in 20 minutes.
You think you can handle that? Are you kidding me? I've been practicing for this moment since I was 13 years old.
Start the clock! could you have possibly She's right upstairs.
She's gonna hear you.
I'm sorry, but how could you possibly think it was okay to have Greta move in with you and not even tell me? She didn't move in.
She's just staying here a while.
Well, how long is "a while"? Until she finds a place.
You know, things, they're in flux.
But honestly, this is my house.
I should be able to say who stays here.
You say that like it's a friend crashing on the couch for the weekend.
This is much more complicated than that.
You don't think I know that? I asked Theo first.
I made sure he was okay with it.
He likes Greta, and I thought you did, too.
Me liking Greta and me being comfortable with her living with my son are two very different things.
And here I was, thinking I had some obligation to come make sure you were okay with me even introducing Theo to Anna.
I'm sorry.
You're right.
Look, this really is supposed to be temporary, but still.
I, uh I should have talked to you about it.
If Anna was moving in with me, you'd do a whole background check on her.
Whole background check? Come on.
I'd contact the FBI.
So Greta.
What do you want to know? Well, here we are.
Just in time for lunch period.
Do you think this will work? Only one way to find out.
47 minutes, 5 seconds.
Okay.
Alright.
Oh, no.
No, no, no.
Not this! Hey, Gare! Uh, is Maggie here? Uh Maggie, no.
You just You just missed her.
Oh.
Everything okay? Yeah, no.
I'm just gonna head home.
I'll catch her later.
Hey, uh, if you're heading in that general direction, you think you could, uh, float me a ride? Yeah, sure.
Hop in.
- Sorry about the mess.
- No problem.
Ah.
Okay, where are we going? - Ahh! - Please say a chiropractor.
Yes, actually.
It's in the Longwood Medical Center.
They have a They have an opening in, uh, 46 minutes exactly.
Okay, let's go.
Buckle up.
Ohh.
Try not to hit any potholes.
My name is Mr.
Howard.
Welcome to Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking.
Over the course of this semester, we are going to be watching some amazing movies, and we're gonna work on our big class project of making our own documentary together.
Can Shanice Williamson be in it? Okay, first rule.
Phones are only used for filmmaking in my class.
If you are not documenting this, please, put it away.
She's just excited because we haven't had an actual celebrity as a teacher before.
I'm not a celebrity.
I'm just a guy who made a movie.
And to answer your question, no, Shanice Williamson cannot be in it.
Why not? That would probably get us into Sundance.
Forget Sundance.
I'm thinking Venice.
My grandfather has a villa there where we can all crash.
Okay, listen.
We're not going to Venice or Sundance or anywhere else, because we don't even have a film yet, okay? You gotta walk before you can fly.
Thanks.
Whoa, wait.
Three research papers? Plus two oral presentations? Mr.
Howard, this is an elective.
- So? - So, electives are supposed to be fun.
They're not supposed to mess with our GPAs or our chances of getting into college.
I'm not here to waste your time or my time with some cake class.
I'm here to teach you how to make a documentary, and we have a lot of work to get done, so how about we just get started? Seriously? I was just texting my friend.
Yeah.
You know, back in my day, you'd have to read that aloud.
In fact, why don't you.
Mr.
Howard, I don't really think What do you got? Alright, fine.
"This guy is the worst.
I knew I should have taken Chorus instead.
" Damn.
I'm telling you, these are so good.
But go to class, come back.
We'll see you again, bro.
Hey.
- Yeah, bro.
- Peace, man.
What you got there? Uh, just some pure magic that's gonna make your taste buds explode.
Here's a sample.
You want one, too? Oh.
No, I'm good, thanks.
Okay.
That's so good.
And it's plant-based, so it's good for the environment.
We'll take two.
Coming right up.
I need two orders of tacos with truffle fries, please.
Yes.
Vali.
I changed my mind.
Vali! Wait! What was that? That's Val's daughter.
Vali, please.
I-I just want to talk.
What is this? Are you, like, stalking me now? What do you expect me to do? I talked to your grandmother.
I know you're getting my calls and texts.
Good.
Then you know I don't want to talk to you.
You can't just ambush me like this.
I get it.
Y-You don't want your friends to know your mom was in prison.
I don't want my friends to know you at all.
That's why I told them you were dead.
You're awfully quiet.
What's on your mind? Oh, let me guess.
Identity theft? I'm fine.
Well, you say that now, but wait till you apply for a credit card.
That's when you'll really start to worry.
- Can I ask you a question? - Sure, anything.
What does "bipolar" mean? Uh "Harlan County, USA" changed the trajectory of the labor movement forever.
Can anyone give me an example of another movie that changed the world? - Kevin? - Huh? Uh, how about a documentary that inspired you? Do I have to? You know what? I-I'm calling a do-over.
Okay, everyone just move your desks.
Push them to the side.
I'm sorry.
I want you to form a circle in the center of the classroom.
Circle around.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Alright.
My name is Rome Howard.
Welcome to Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking.
Okay.
I'm gonna be really honest with you.
I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
It's been awhile since I've been in a classroom, you know? I used to go to this school.
We know.
Okay, look.
What you don't know is that back when I came here, there were only two other Black kids in my grade, and it was horrible.
I felt unwanted.
I felt ostracized and really alone.
Things got really dark for me, and I honestly believe those experiences are part of what contributed to the depression I experience today.
But this this is not a sad story, because I eventually found my voice through filmmaking.
That movie that I screened here a few weeks ago, it gave me the opportunity to channel my pain into something that helped people.
That's really why I'm here, to help you have the same experience.
But the question is, do you believe that you have a story to tell? Okay.
Let's try this again.
What is a documentary that moved you? "Super Size Me.
" Okay.
I, uh I watched that film, and I was done with fast food, like, forever.
So you don't eat no French fries? - Mnh-mnh.
- Not even a cheat day? Nada.
I want to talk to you about that later, okay? Okay.
Alright.
Anyone else? "Free Solo.
" That film scared me to death.
Amazing film.
"The Social Dilemma.
" I see why.
I'm so sorry.
When I suggested setting up here, I really thought her seeing you run a successful business would somehow make her realize how far you've come.
I did, too.
But, clearly, nothing I do can change the way she sees me.
Can I go try to talk to her? I don't know, maybe if she hears from someone else? There's nothing you can say that will bring me back from the dead.
So, how'd you hurt your back? Uh, I was moving something from the bed to the floor.
Well, it must have been heavy.
I didn't say heavy.
You said heavy.
You think you could go any faster? - Are you okay? - Not really, no.
I mean, I'm in a lot of pain.
I need to see my chiropractor.
Okay, well, see if they can readjust your attitude while you're there.
I mean, you do realize I'm doing you a favor? Yes, I do.
I'm sorry.
No more backseat driving from this guy.
Thank you.
Uh, y-y What? Soph, how long has the fuel light been on? Mm.
Greta? I thought you were going to work.
You told Eddie I'm bipolar? Uh, how did you? Oh, Theo must have heard.
Yeah, he did.
Well, that was not intentional, but I did tell Eddie.
I also told him you have it completely under control.
You know the things that you know about me because we're in a relationship.
I'm not in a relationship with Eddie.
I told him because he's Theo's father and he has a right to know who's in the house with him and if they have any issues.
But it's not like he's worried about it, at all.
Oh, good.
As long as Eddie's not worried.
Are you? What do you mean? Well, you just said "issues," but I'm assuming you didn't tell him about, like, my TMJ or the bunion on my pinky toe.
Does my being bipolar scare you? Yes.
I lost a friend to suicide, and the statistics for people with bipolar are pretty scary.
So if you're asking me honestly, do I worry about it more than your TMJ, I do.
So you don't trust me when I tell you I'm okay? No, I-I do trust you.
- I just - You know, um I think staying here was a mistake, so I'm gonna go to work, and then figure out another place to live.
Greta, wait.
Greta! I'm sorry about that.
Yeah, you know, I usually keep about a quarter tank in there.
That is not enough, but it's, uh, okay.
We still have 17 minutes.
We're good.
There was a bag right here.
What What What happened to the bag? Oh, I cleaned out all the trash while you were inside paying for gas.
It was getting gross in here, and I wasn't expecting guests.
No, no, no, Soph.
That wasn't trash.
I need that bag.
We gotta turn around right now.
B-But then you're definitely gonna be late.
I mean, what What is the big deal? The big deal is that I-I'm not actually going to see the chiropractor.
I need to deliver a sample.
The sample is in that bag.
I need the bag immediately.
A sample of what? Maggie and I are trying to make a baby.
- What?! - Yeah! What?! Oh, my Gary, that's amazing! Wait, but why do you need a Ohh.
- Oh, my God.
- Mm-hmm.
- Oh, my God! - Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
Great first class, team.
I gotta give you your first assignment.
Interview someone in your family.
I want you to introduce them to me through your lens.
I want to know why they're important to you.
I want to know how they impact you.
And you've got to know your audience.
I gotta watch eight of these.
Make sure they're not boring.
Hey, Mr.
Howard.
Um, can I talk to you for a sec? Sure.
Madison, right? Yeah.
Um, I just wanted to thank you for opening up to us like that.
I'm also not sure who to interview.
I don't have any siblings, and my parents work late, so Can it be anyone close to me? Sure.
Just do not be afraid to ask tough questions, okay? 'Cause tough questions are the most important element to good documentary filmmaking.
The second most important would be snacks, so don't forget those.
Got it.
Thanks, Mr.
Howard.
Of course.
Crushed it! Are you absolutely certain it was this trash can? Yes! Oh, wait! That's my old Invisalign! Ew.
Now who's grossed out? Wait.
Smile.
I see you, Invisalign.
Uh, sir? Oh, no.
No, no.
I'm just, um I'm just looking for my bag of Never mind.
It's alright.
Okay, it's Thank you.
- God bless you.
- That's very kind.
Oh! Ah! There you are.
Oh, yeah.
You think we can still get there in time? Yeah, well, the sooner that bag is out of my car, the better.
Ugh! - I'll see you tomorrow? - Yeah.
Looks like food truck boy's crushing on you.
What do you want? Oh, my God.
Is my mom here? No, no, no.
It's just me, okay? You ran off before your order was up, and I wanted to make sure you were okay.
Okay, I-I know what you're doing.
It's sweet, but stuff with my mom is really complicated, and I just don't want to talk to her, okay? I get it.
Stuff with my mom's complicated, too.
Actually, it's what we have in common.
We both lost our moms to the system.
Mine was undocumented.
She got deported.
That sucks.
Yeah.
Thing is, my mom broke the law, but she's not a bad person.
You may not see that right now, but it's the same with your mom.
She may have made a mistake, but she's a good person.
I've seen it firsthand.
It's not the same thing.
You are right about that.
It's not.
'Cause my mom can never come back here again.
So I don't get a second chance with her, at least not in this country.
I'd give anything for that.
Sorry.
I'm, uh, looking for Eddie Seville? Yeah, you got him.
Oh.
Well, I am Detective Saunders.
Brookline PD.
I'm wrapping up the investigation into the, uh, death of Peter Benoit.
What can I do for you? Well, it appears his death was an accident, but in cases like this, we always want to talk to the ex and anyone else connected to them.
Well, I only met Peter once, briefly.
Um I think you and I both know I didn't push the guy down the stairs from the second floor.
Fair enough.
Uh, and you were with Anna Benoit at a music convention the day it happened, is that right? Anna? Eddie, hey, hi.
You're home.
I'm sorry.
I was just trying to get ahold of you all day.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's right.
Okay, great.
That's, uh, pretty much all I need.
Thank you for your time.
This is taking forever.
So, Gary Mendez is gonna be a dad? Well, not if this semi has anything to say about it.
It's pretty crazy, huh? Eh, you know, if Maggie's the mom, you'll be in great shape.
Hey, you can commit felonies on their behalf, and Maggie can give them free therapy for it.
No, but really, this kid will be so lucky to have you as a dad.
You really think so? Yes.
The whole time when I was icing you out, I knew if I ever really needed you, you'd be there for me.
You know, when Danny told me that your cancer might be back, I was just imagining you not being there, not being in my life anymore, and I couldn't live with that.
I came over to see Maggie earlier to talk about Peter.
You know, they're having a memorial for him.
Wait.
What are you doing? Traffic is about to move.
We're about a block away.
We can still make it.
It doesn't matter.
This is more important.
- Here you go.
Thank you.
- Great.
Thanks.
Where is Tyrell? I mean, how long does it take to run down to the corner market and get a couple bottles of Sriracha? Val.
I'll give you five minutes.
Okay.
Well I could tell you about why I made such a stupid mistake in the first place that landed me in prison, or how I got more time added to my sentence for illegally getting a cellphone so I could try to reach you.
Or how, with the help of some good people, I've gotten my life back on track.
But if only have five minutes, what I really want to say is nothing.
I just want to listen.
I want to hear about my little girl.
Because what kills me more than anything about our time apart is that I haven't been there to do that for you.
How'd you hear about the memorial? I got a notification 'cause I'm a former student.
Getting that must have been so hard.
I can't even imagine.
Are you okay? I mean, honestly, it just kind of rocked me.
Just seeing all these people posting nice comments about him.
They don't even know who he was or the things that he did to people.
It just And now they never will.
Well, they would've if you hadn't had to take down your podcast.
No, Gary, that is not what this is about.
I mean, my question is, what do I do now? He's dead.
So, what, do I-I make a big stink about what happened when he can't hurt anyone anymore, or do I just let the truth of it all just die with him? I don't think there is a wrong decision here, Soph.
If you want to shout this from the mountaintops, go do it.
You want to put this thing behind you and never talk about it again with anybody, you do that.
Whatever you decide, that's that's the right choice.
You just gotta trust your instincts.
Either way, I got your back.
- Whoa.
What are you doing? - I'm trusting my instincts.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, Soph! This feels eeh, inappropriate.
Gary, please don't make it weird, okay? This is about you becoming a dad.
- Uh - Hey, Dixons don't quit! Run, Forrest, run! - How'd we do? - Not bad.
That lunch rush earned you just enough to buy your first math textbook at Yale.
Okay.
Plus $50 more in tips to go towards your new kicks.
- Now we talking.
Okay.
- Yeah.
It's real.
So, will you be out here again tomorrow? Will the cafeteria be serving soggy pizza tomorrow? Maybe I'll see you.
Thank you.
Both of you.
Why are you thanking her? I did all the work.
You know, you can say it.
You're proud of me.
Of course I am.
For 35 years of my life, I was so sure I didn't want to have kids, and now I don't know what my life would be without you.
And the crazy part is, in a couple months, you're going off to college and I'm gonna lose you.
Please! I may be going to college, but you're never gonna lose me, okay? Okay.
I think that's it for today.
You can head out.
I'll lock up, Meetra.
I'll, uh, see you tomorrow.
You were quiet and dark for a blonde ♪ Hi.
- Hey.
- Hey.
What are you doing here? I came to say I'm sorry.
Not for telling Eddie, but for for not talking to you before I did.
You really need to work on your apologies.
So let me show you how it's done.
I'm sorry.
Theo is Eddie's son, and he has a right to know what's going on with anyone staying in your house with him.
I'm just gonna need to get used to my girlfriend putting a man ahead of me, even if that man is only 12.
You know, you and I have never really talked about me being bipolar, and that is my mistake.
You know, when you first told me about it, I-I was in the phase of our relationship, I wanted to seem really chill about everything.
- And that phase is over? - Totally over.
Well, um, I didn't want to ask you how you felt about it, because I was worried it might be a deal-breaker.
It's not at all, you know, but with the You know, the unpredictability of my marriage and and losing Jon, it would help to know how I can support you.
Well, you might not realize it, but you already are.
You're right, we should talk about this, though.
And I think there's someone else we should include in the conversation.
Huh.
Does he have my smile? And my love of pancakes.
Hi, Mr.
Howard.
Uh, you said that I could interview anybody I'm close to, so I decided to introduce you to me.
Um, I want to go by Maddox, and this is who I really am.
I am not a girl.
Um To be honest, I'm terrified right now.
Um I wasn't really sure how I was gonna do this today, uh, but But I got my snacks, so, um, okay.
Uh You said to ask tough questions, so, um Have I ever told anybody who I really am? Not until today.
How will my family take it? I-I Honestly, I have no clue.
Do I think that I'll ever be ready to come out to everybody? Honestly, I don't know.
Until today, I-I really doubted it.
But hearing what you said in class today about your journey and And seeing how your film helped you, I can finally imagine a day where I might be able to accept this piece of myself and and show it to everybody else.
It's a condition where feelings get really intense, you know? Like sometimes I feel really happy, almost too happy, and then other times, I feel really, really sad.
I feel those things pretty much every day.
Right, yeah.
Take those feelings and then magnify them by 50.
It's not fun to experience, and it's not that fun to be around either.
You know, uh, that sounds really scary.
It can be, but exercise helps, and so does good sleep.
And then there's my medication, which really just helps to smooth out the good and bad feelings so I don't feel like I'm too happy or too sad for the situation that I'm in.
That sounds good.
But then again, my dad said he had his alcoholism under control, too, and that didn't work out so great.
Oh.
Psych.
I'm just messing with you.
Oh, kid, you are gonna get it.
Are you serious? I mean, it was a great joke, but come on! Big trouble! Oh, you guys want to start a pillow fight? Here.
Oh, Sophie told me everything you went through to get that sample delivered today.
Thank you.
I don't know what you're talking about.
And who is this, uh Sophie you speak of? You know, it's too bad your back still hurts, 'cause you kind of owe me from earlier.
I don't know about that.
I mean, it wasn't really for pleasure.
It was more for research purposes.
It's funny you mention that, because I have something that I would love for you to research in depth.
