Formula 1: Drive to Survive (2019) s05e02 Episode Script

Bounce Back

1
Hi. Hi, Toto.
My name's Yasmeen.
I don't know if you remember,
last time you came on campus,
I asked you
if I could name my dog after you,
and you said you would be proud.
- So
- This is Toto Wolff.
This is
- And everyone says it suits him, the name.
- Yeah.
He's a good-looking, intelligent dog.
Well, thank you, everyone.
We are here with a very special guest.
With the Mercedes team,
he won the Drivers' Championship
seven times in a row
and the Constructors' Championship
an unprecedented eight times.
Please join me in welcoming Toto Wolff.
My name's Toto Wolff.
I'm the team principal and CEO
of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas
Formula 1 team.
Thank you so much for being here.
How has it been over the last one year,
especially after Abu Dhabi?
What happened in Abu Dhabi
is just beyond what we can imagine.
Verstappen takes the lead of the race!
Come on!
The stopwatch never lies.
No, Michael! No, no!
The stopwatch lied this day.
Verstappen stays ahead.
This is getting manipulated, man.
That's in the history books,
but now the mindset is set
for the new season.
2022 is this massive change of regulations
with a completely new car.
Valtteri leaves Mercedes
to join Alfa Romeo.
It was clear
that George needs to be in that seat.
Yeah, lovely.
Yeah, lovely stuff.
Having this
hungry young kid coming up
and Lewis Hamilton,
the best driver of all time,
driving this year's car
puts us in a position to win.
Our ambition is
to be right back in the front.
- Morning, morning.
- How are you?
Good. You?
Ciao.
How are you?
Have you seen that the walk of shame
is shorter this year, yeah?
So we're improving.
- How was your winter?
- Very nice.
You were eating and getting drunk, right?
- Hey, Yuki.
- How's it going?
How's it going, mate?
Good morning. How are youse?
- Good, good.
- Good morning.
- Hello.
- Hi, Carlos.
Let's go. We start.
- Yes.
- Zero-zero.
Great to be back.
Exciting to see new cars and regulations.
So everything that we learned last year
is out the window.
This morning, we took pictures
of the cars
for the beginning of the season.
The surprising thing
is that they are all completely different.
Interesting.
2022 represents a new start for Formula 1.
The cars are visibly different this year
than they have ever been
in Formula 1 history.
Everything has changed beyond recognition.
Design philosophies
aren't a decision made in the moment.
They're made
months before we even see the car.
The team principal
has to have faith in their design,
that they've made the right choices
and they've taken the right path.
I have a microphone
hanging over me now.
Okay. Bye. Thank you.
Testing, at the beginning of the season,
is the chess part of Formula 1.
It is clear the spotlight is gonna be
on the engineers and the team principals
to put a car on track that allows
the drivers to fight for race wins.
If we can deliver,
then I believe we have all ingredients
that put us in a position to win.
How we doing?
We've had pretty exciting
driver pairings in Mercedes since 2010
with Nico and Lewis, Valtteri and Lewis,
and now it's George.
I'm George Russell,
24 years old,
and Formula 1 driver
for Mercedes-AMG Petronas.
Does it feel good saying that?
Yeah, I guess so.
George was very competitive
at Williams.
He's proven that he deserves
a seat in the top team
where he can win races.
Good morning. How we doing?
He had to do his time.
- All fully prepped service.
- Yes.
I think you have everything.
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
Just no friends!
Your friends?
Thanks for waiting. Sorry I'm late.
I'm Lewis Hamilton,
and I race for Mercedes-Benz.
Oh shit, what is it called?
- Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team.
- Oh yeah.
- You'd think I'd know that by now.
- I know. Every year's the same!
After having a difficult year,
this year has to be the comeback.
Morning.
I'm trying to take back
the championship that was taken from me.
You readjust,
you realign,
you accept the reality
which you're faced with,
and you get on with the job.
What do you reckon, Seb?
- Oh yes. It looks good.
- Huh?
It looks good.
So much potential there.
Well, obviously, we're starting
testing with a radically new car.
Because of how the regulations
were designed,
we developed the car
for a very low ride height,
basically on the floor.
I think we've taken
some courageous development route,
and I'm positive that whatever we've done
points in the right direction.
We will see soon
whether it's competitive or not.
And we are getting ready
for the first test session
here at Bahrain International Circuit.
So track is clear.
We have cars out on circuit.
After months of development,
now is the time that the teams will see
what machine they've really built.
I think I've got an issue.
It already felt weird.
Yeah, I'm not feeling this lap.
Just, like, ride's terrible.
Shockingly bad.
Oh shit.
How's the car?
Something doesn't feel right
out here, man.
Here we are at testing,
and all the teams are struggling.
There's an incredible amount of bouncing.
Okay. Roger.
The drivers are getting
bounced around inside the car,
it's really physical.
See how much it's bouncing
at the end of these straights.
There we go. You can You can hear it.
This is something
the teams surely need to get on top of.
They can't run like this
at the start of a Grand Prix.
In order to get their car to go fast,
they have to run it low to the ground.
The lower they run it to the ground,
the more it porpoises.
Bouncing around.
When you raise the ride height,
they go slower.
And so they're
Looks like they're listening to AC/DC.
Massive bouncing,
exit turn four.
I used to watch Pimp My Ride,
and they used to have these wacky cars,
where the suspension
would sort of jump up and down,
and it looked pretty cool
and pretty relaxed.
This is along the same lines,
but it's not cool, it's not relaxed.
It's pretty severe.
You see the porpoising
that we have?
It's crazy, yes?
Porpoising.
The car on the rear
starts to go up and down,
but that's really intense for the driver.
That one was bouncing.
I saw you doing the same.
- We were bouncing quite a bit.
- Yeah. Same.
I just I don't know.
It felt horrendous.
I think you just need to look into it.
It's a struggle.
And it's always very difficult to know
how easy or hard it is to fix an issue
'cause it's more
in the philosophy of the car,
and it's how the thing's designed.
I think it's important to acknowledge
that one didn't go to plan.
It's down to us now to strike back.
Have we got any idea at all?
Everybody had a certain degree
of bouncing,
and that's not sustainable.
It is fundamental
if you want to fight for a championship
that we fix those issues.
There were a lot
of discussions about bouncing, porpoising.
A problem for the driver, therefore.
We will quickly fix what it was.
It's an aerodynamic issue,
so we need to get fixes in place quickly
and focus on the setup of the car.
We have cars back out on the circuit.
Not the preseason
that the teams would've wanted,
but hopefully they'll be back on track
later on this afternoon.
The car's going really fast out there.
Good job.
Ferrari look superb.
Now it feels decent.
Got any immediate issues?
No. All seems to be all right.
Let's see this Mercedes now, then.
Big bouncing into turn nine.
Overall it does not feel
like there's an improvement in ride.
Everybody had bouncing,
but they were able
to fix that problem on the track.
And we just can't fix the car.
It's impossible.
Is the car in one piece?
Mercedes is, like,
doing a lot of that on the rear
down the straight.
Interesting.
I don't know if it's me,
but, jeez,
I'm struggling so much out there.
Um
It's tough for me.
What they saying next door?
- What, that side?
- No, that side.
They're still struggling.
They're struggling.
Each team, you could see,
is making progress,
but Mercedes looked in a bit of a mess.
It's a very different landscape for Toto,
something that he's not been used to
since he's come into Formula 1,
where suddenly he's on the
he's on the back foot.
Let's not forget,
Mercedes have annihilated the opposition
for seven years.
Seven years, they have destroyed,
you know, everybody,
and finally you start to see problems.
Um, so
So
Yeah. Everybody's quite enjoying this.
In the past, we have created a machine
that performs seamlessly.
But this year, our car isn't good enough,
and you need the best car in order to win.
And if that's missing,
you're not gonna win a championship.
Now with Lewis Hamilton.
Having a little look at Pierre Gasly.
We're so slow on the straights.
But the Mercedes,
with its porpoising,
just can't make the move yet.
The issue is the car, comparatively,
is far worse than Mercedes is used to.
That's what they've got to work with
and what they've got to fight against.
How many positions have I lost now?
So we're now P14.
This is painful for Lewis Hamilton.
Just when you think it can't get worse,
Max Verstappen laps him.
This car is something else, man.
That is gonna hurt.
Yeah. A weekend to forget,
that's for sure.
Lewis. Look at this.
He's a sitting duck down the straight.
Carlos Sainz is all over him.
I would save this engine, guys,
if I was you.
Sorry.
Lewis, we still think
we can achieve points here today.
Hamilton thinks,
"What's the point in trundling around?"
I didn't enjoy hearing that radio message.
Didn't enjoy that at all.
I think Red Bull
is our only competitor today.
I don't think that Mercedes
will be back in the fight.
It's so bouncy out here, man.
I'm frickin' losing my mind.
And a frustrated Lewis Hamilton in eighth.
Fuck's sake, man.
This is a huge challenge for Toto,
probably the biggest that he's faced
in his time in Formula 1.
They're in huge trouble.
And you can't understate
how much trouble they're in.
Welcome to the shores of the Caspian Sea
and Baku
for the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
- Lando!
- Morning, guys.
Coming into Baku, Mercedes are
third in the Constructors' Championship.
And it's their worst start to a season
in as long as any of us can remember.
Morning. How you doing?
And that's something new for Toto
for Lewis,
for the whole team, really,
to have to come to terms with.
Come on, then. Let's go.
Please welcome
George Russell of Mercedes!
How we doing?
Where are we going?
Mercedes.
Hey, guys.
Where's Lewis?
Where's Lewis Hamilton?
No. I don't take it personally.
Don't worry.
They're waiting for Lewis.
The problem we've faced this season
is that this porpoising issue,
it has made it really difficult
for us, as drivers, to win.
Everybody expects Mercedes
to go out there and win.
I've signed with Mercedes because
they're the championship-winning team,
and we're not winning.
You've got Lewis Hamilton, World Champion,
not winning.
Obviously, everybody's feeling it.
Please welcome seven-time World Champion,
- of Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton.
- Whoo!
Give a warm welcome to Lewis Hamilton.
Man, it sucks.
It sucks.
Lewis!
First you're feeling
like you're not doing well,
and then secondly
you're letting down the fans.
That's, uh That's never a good feeling.
You keep your fingers crossed, okay?
Never give up, man. Never give up.
This car has just been
the worst car to drive.
For a driver,
you're kind of taken out of your element
because it's not doing
what you want it to do, basically.
Problems are out of your control.
Thank you.
A warm welcome to Lewis Hamilton
who joins teammate George
I think probably all
the engineers feel heavily responsible.
And only they can come up
with a solution for this.
Morning.
1 I think key messages
when performance isn't super strong
is about resilience.
You know, Toto said this week
there's no silver bullet.
It's about entrusting our people
and the processes
and then maximizing what we can get.
Fifth is great.
Let's see what else we can get.
"Great" is pushing it,
but yeah, absolutely.
Well, it's par.
That's what we all wanna say.
- The whole schedule sucks.
- What do you mean?!
We've spent ten years
with you saying it should be shorter
- But don't make it worse.
- and less media.
Don't make it worse.
It's supposed to go to a three-day.
It's now a longer four-day.
It's longer.
Both drivers are upset
when you're not performing
like you expect to perform.
But when you start to see failure,
it is important to continue to trust.
I think fixing the car
is most important, um, for all of us,
and I'm fundamentally responsible
for any failure in performance.
We are going to provide the drivers
with a car that they can win, uh,
and race for championships.
We're going to do better.
I need basically one there and one there,
but you need that to move
It's quite a challenging task
to fix the bouncing.
But I think
if we are able to tweak the setup
into the sweet spot of the car,
we can fight for a race win.
That looks great from there.
Looks like a stable platform.
I'm pretty certain
there's a bit more to come this afternoon.
Well, I hope so.
Give me some Give me some encouragement.
Now we need to prove
that the team can recover
continue to live up to our standards,
to be right back in the front.
Radio check.
Radio check from the garage.
Radio check.
Radio's loud and clear.
Now the race is on.
George Russell started fifth,
and is right on the rear wing
of Sergio Pérez.
If he had DRS at that particular moment,
George Russell, I daresay,
would've been past the Red Bull.
Lewis Hamilton in sixth place.
Battling with Yuki Tsunoda in fifth.
This pace is good, Lewis.
Go on!
Come on.
The car's bumping a dangerous amount.
It's bouncing more than before.
I'm bouncing all over the place.
My back is killing me.
Okay, copy.
And Hamilton's through,
up into fifth place,
ahead of Tsunoda.
And you can see why
his back would be really hurting here.
It's just ridiculous.
Max Verstappen wins
the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
His teammate Sergio Pérez
takes second place.
Third goes to George Russell.
Nicely done, team. Well done.
With Lewis Hamilton
coming home to take that fourth place.
Lewis, we'll know that this is
a bit of a shitbox to drive at the moment.
And sorry for the back also.
Yeah. We will
We will sort ourselves out.
In Baku,
I nearly I nearly just pulled in.
The car is like you're driving
a wild horse, you know?
You're feeling all this G
coming through your neck
and through your spine and your core.
Hey, Lewis. Um
How do you feel?
It looked like you had to work hard.
It was the worst race ever.
One of the most painful,
probably the most painful race
that I've experienced,
and the toughest battle with the car
I've ever experienced as well.
Just physically just the most painful.
It was nerve racking. It was worrying.
You're fearful you're gonna get injured,
you know? It's dangerous.
The fact that Lewis is in pain
getting out of the car,
there is a legitimate concern there,
and he's massively important to the team.
Fucking hell.
Toto, he knows
the situation the team's in.
Lewis is gonna be having
a crisis of confidence over this.
The bouncing's really horrible.
It's really bad.
It's definitely not good enough.
We've got to improve.
Thank you, Lewis.
You're always going to get
questions when someone's struggling.
Ever since Abu Dhabi '21,
there have been rumors
that Lewis would walk away.
With this season
not coming up to expectations,
those swirling doubts creep back in.
I think in the end, though,
it's gonna end badly.
- It is, isn't it?
- Yes.
It's gonna explode at some stage.
He's wondering the right moment to go.
You know, who on earth would they take?
Yeah.
That would drop them in the shit
if he decides to retire.
Yeah. They would be a bit screwed.
What are Toto's options
if, you know, Lewis were to retire?
It leaves them pretty exposed.
All right.
Let's go.
Can we sit?
All right, who is missing?
Half the grid.
Christian is there.
Toto is here, so we can start.
All right, guys,
just wanted to catch up, as always.
To take
Guenther, excuse me.
- Sorry, teacher.
- Ah!
So just a couple of points to catch up
because we didn't have the time
to spend some time together
in the last Grand Prix.
I hear lots of chitchat,
talking about porpoising.
The Chinese whispers through the press.
Little emails being sent.
This is new ground for Toto.
You can see the frustration, desperation.
Walls might be crumbling a bit.
You can see it.
I can tell you that all of you
are playing a dangerous game.
If a car ends in the wall
because it's too stiff
or it's bottoming out,
you're in the shit,
and I'm gonna come after you.
- Because we are removing
- Toto.
Wait a second. Wait a second. I'm talking.
Hang on. Are we Are we playing
to the cameras here or
I think
this is probably better off camera.
No. I don't care.
If you think this is a little game
on performance, I'll tell you
- No, Toto.
- You are very wrong.
Safety's a matter of team responsibility.
Braking system.
- Absolutely. Each of you
- Suspension.
Each of you has done something
to limit the problem.
- Toto
- Congratulations.
Change your car!
You've got a problem,
change your fucking car.
Then you change your car because Checo
has been saying the car is fucked.
No, he hasn't! Speak to my drivers.
- Checo has been on the record.
- Let's go and get him.
- Yeah.
- Anyway
I have it. I have it printed out.
- Very good.
- Guys. Sorry.
Sorry.
We will make sure that, with FIA,
we will discuss that in the proper way.
Time to go on the track.
Thank you.
Time to go porpoising.
I don't know if there was some element
of showmanship going on there or not,
but, uh, obviously we were all accused
that we want to hurt people,
which we don't want, by the way, you know.
We are not all killers here.
Yeah, fucking joke.
Oh yeah. Fuck
It was great sitting back,
watching the drama.
I think, for me, it was very entertaining.
Toto is extremely competitive,
and he can't stand stand losing,
so, for sure, he is not very happy.
Unbelievable.
I saw Toto reacting
in a very emotional way.
Maybe he was under pressure
for their performance at the time?
Maybe he was under pressure
because he promised something to someone?
I don't know.
But I believe that, as team principals,
we always have to stay rational.
Surprising. I didn't expect it from him.
You know, he got himself pretty wound up.
It's a horrible feeling, you know,
that suddenly you're just
part of the scenery, you're not
you know, you're not competing.
And that takes an adjustment,
and that can cause self-doubt,
and it can create a whole bunch
of emotions that haven't been there,
that haven't been prevalent previously.
You start to see, you know, cracks.
We are not able
to provide the tools to both drivers
to fight for a championship.
But I hope that in Silverstone,
we will be again.
We move this. That's gone as well.
This is a way we think we can improve.
Then I like it, yeah.
Very strong.
- I think it's doable.
- Okay.
I think we are able to fix
that bouncing and hitting the ground.
Um, I think we could be back in the hunt.
So we've got a range
of hydraulic components,
a fair amount of suspension
starting to go through as well.
So it's fully up and running?
Yeah, yeah, 100%.
Yeah, 100% up and running.
So it's a good one.
Bring a big upgrade package
to Silverstone,
there's no hiding for them.
Both drivers have got a car
that can win races,
then the expectation mounts,
and then it ramps up.
It has to work.
It's a beautiful
summer's day at Silverstone,
and on this famous, historic circuit,
it's time for the British Grand Prix
Any of you guys watch Netflix?
- Yeah.
- Yeah? You're on it.
Really?
Morning, Lewis.
- This jacket's huge.
- It's the best jacket ever!
Oh no. It came open.
Don't ask what these are.
Lewis said, "I got you a present."
He got a pair
for everyone in the team.
Not too sure
I'll be wearing them anytime soon.
Thank you for not letting me
get that tattoo.
You're not getting a Toto tattoo
on your chest.
Don't let him tattoo that.
- We won't.
- Why not?!
It's Danny Ricciardo.
Dan! George!
I don't know what he's writing here.
- Have you just drawn a dick on there?
- It's a love heart.
- George!
- George!
Going into Silverstone,
there's a lot of expectation
upon myself as a driver, us as a team.
You always want to do well
at your home race.
It's the place you get the most support.
There's 400,000 people across the weekend.
How we all doing today?
But for us not to have any victories
that's gonna be difficult.
Being under the microscope of everyone.
Everybody is demanding so much.
I think we're all feeling the pressure.
Lewis! Lewis! Lewis!
Every single one of us
feels the pain and all the ups and downs
together, as a team.
Everyone's so heavily invested,
and there is so much riding on us all
coming together and having success.
Don't wanna give you too much hope,
but I think we've got a fast race car, so
We're gonna go out there
and give it our all.
God save the Queen
It is race day here at Silverstone.
Zhou Guanyu starts ninth on the grid,
his highest grid position
in Formula 1 so far.
He's just behind George Russell,
who will line up eighth for Mercedes,
with his teammate Lewis Hamilton in fifth.
Mercedes need a hell of a start here
if they've got a chance
of winning this race.
- Thanks for being here, man.
- Very grateful, man. Wouldn't miss it.
Not winning a race would be a first,
uh, since I've joined the team.
Good luck today, George.
This time around, we have
two British drivers and a home race.
We have basically, um, two chances.
We know that the odds are against us,
but we'll give it everything.
We are very determined to fight.
Here is better for you maybe, then.
You can hear us?
I can hear you.
Here we go, then.
This is what we've all come
to Silverstone for.
And we're racing at Silverstone.
Brilliant start for Lewis Hamilton.
Already past Pérez and Leclerc.
He's up to third.
Third. Brilliant.
Russell's had a slow getaway.
He's got three cars
trying to get past him.
Oh my God.
George has a crash.
Crash, George.
- Fuck.
- You okay?
Is he okay? Yeah, I'm okay. I'm okay.
I'm out.
Who was that upside down,
I think, in the Alfa?
It looked bad. It looked bad.
What the hell?
What the hell happened?
So looks like a collision
between Zhou, Russell
Albon is also involved.
- You all good, Alex?
- Yeah, I'm fine.
Is the car okay?
Can you keep going?
Yeah, I think I have damage.
Everyone all right?
Just checking now.
Someone's upside down.
The car was upside down
that went through the gravel. Marks on
I think it's Zhou Guanyu
who's also involved with this.
George Russell
running over to see if he can help.
I just see this car
just barrel-rolling towards the barriers
well over 100 miles an hour.
I was just thinking about Zhou.
Ordinarily you're so focused on yourself.
You've just lost this race.
But I was thinking,
"Shit. That's a huge crash."
You watch a million videos,
but that was
quite a shocking three seconds
that just all happened
in front of my eyes.
- He went over the barrier, didn't he?
- Yeah, massive.
I know how claustrophobic it is
inside a race car,
and seeing him being trapped in that car,
that's kind of like a driver's worst fear.
Uh.
Is he okay, the guy that's upside down?
If you didn't take
the opportunity to help
and the worst was to have happened,
you probably would never forgive yourself.
I can give you some news.
Feeling all right?
- All good.
- Welcome.
Zhou Guanyu is okay.
That was very scary.
When I was rolled upside down,
I kind of just closed my eyes
just waiting to stop.
When I noticed
that the car was not slowing down,
I could be going for a big hit.
You know you're in real danger.
Luckily, I was walking off
after, I think,
one of the biggest incidents in Formula 1.
I was very grateful to have George there
calling the marshal over
and making sure I was okay.
It really means a lot.
George Russell, his run
of top-five finishes ending
at the first corner here today.
Uh! Sorry.
No, don't be sorry.
It's shit, isn't it?
Don't be sorry.
Lewis Hamilton
had got past Charles Leclerc.
Because they hadn't gone
through any of the sectors, really,
the only order that the FIA can use
to restart this race
is that original grid order.
That's crazy if they do that.
What's happened to the grid?
They are saying it's the last time
they could establish the order.
Why would they do that?
They should keep it the same.
There's cars that are out, so
Um, Ron, can you go back to race control
and say, "Well, they had an order."
"There was a race order?"
Ron says what they're doing is correct
because there weren't all cars over SE2
off SE1 line.
What position did I start?
Five? I go back to five?
Yeah.
I go back to five.
He's upset for a minute.
Then he walks off and deals with it.
He'll just
have to pass them again.
- Exactly.
- Yes.
You can always push the buttons.
If you have an urgent need to comment.
It's always very odd for me
to have one of the drivers next to me
watching the race.
I'd rather him being in a race car.
I was meant to be in that race.
I was meant to be fighting.
Instead, I'm twiddling my thumbs.
That is not a position
I ever wanna be in again.
Although, at the moment,
it looks like Lewis's car is good.
I think he can win here.
What's gonna happen second time around?
Lewis Hamilton,
unlucky he got put back
into his original grid slot.
We need to introduce
a little bit of pace.
You have DRS enabled.
Lewis Hamilton has now got DRS.
You can see Hamilton
gaining on the McLaren,
gaining on Lando Norris.
You can hear the cheers
as one British driver overtakes another,
and Hamilton's up to fourth.
That was a good lap, Lewis.
You're fastest man on track.
He's getting quicker, no?
The tires are not lovely.
I think I have a puncture or something.
Puncture.
Verstappen, it's crazy how slow he is.
Verstappen's in trouble.
He's gone off the track,
or he's got a problem with the car.
Carlos Sainz is now gonna take the lead,
and the crowd absolutely loving that.
There's something.
Why don't you fucking check?
We don't see a puncture, Max.
Mate, I need to box.
Verstappen pits,
and you can see a massive lockup there
as he comes into the pit lane.
The cheers of the crowd
for the two Ferraris.
So Verstappen, puncture.
Verstappen, puncture.
This is good, Lewis.
Got every chance here.
Don't forget Lewis Hamilton in this.
He's got the gap down to 4.8
to Charles Leclerc now.
Hamilton has very much
got them in his sight.
I know we can win this race.
We're gonna break everything, guys.
Ocon's slowing.
Esteban Ocon's got a problem.
Okay, stop the car, please.
He's gonna stop there.
- That's a safety car.
- That's got to be a safety car.
So you are
in your safety-car window, so box, box.
The tires are good, man.
The tires are good.
There'll be no position loss.
Keep tight on the delta.
Box, box.
In comes Lewis Hamilton.
So it's soft tires that are going on
for Hamilton in this one.
Uh, guys, are you sure
this is the right tire?
Hamilton obviously nervous
about the grip of these soft tires.
As we get racing again,
Hamilton's gonna be under pressure
as Leclerc leads Sainz
leads Hamilton leads Pérez.
Hamilton struggled
for grip on the last corner.
That's put Pérez onto him.
Hamilton and Pérez
going wheel to wheel.
Pérez is ahead of Hamilton.
And Lewis Hamilton back down in fourth.
What a restart this has been!
Lewis just didn't seem to have any grip.
It's hard to catch these guys right now.
Copy, Lewis.
As soon as these tires come in,
we will be flat out to the end.
I think Lewis will win.
Hamilton has now found
more temperature in those tires.
He's gaining on the Red Bull.
Pérez on the inside.
Charles Leclerc gives him
just enough space.
Can Pérez squeeze past?
They're going wheel to wheel.
Pérez goes off the track,
cuts the chicane.
Off goes Leclerc.
Through goes Hamilton!
Unbelievable stuff!
Hamilton says, "Thank you very much."
Another thing opens up for him.
Pérez comes up the inside.
He's taking the place back.
Hamilton hangs out around the outside.
He's run out of road.
Leclerc's still in the hunt as well.
Leclerc trying to get that place back.
He has. Hamilton was forced off the track.
He's gonna have to go
round the outside at Stowe.
Forces Charles Leclerc wide.
And now through Luffield,
he's just inching ahead.
Urged on by the crowd,
willing Hamilton back onto the podium,
and he does move up into third place.
Through goes the Ferrari
to win the British Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton's on the podium
for a record-breaking 13th time
here at Silverstone.
What a British Grand Prix that was.
Nice work, Lewis.
That's P3, mate, and fastest lap.
Well done. Hell of a battle there, mate.
Really impressive drive.
That was a tough one, guys.
But great effort.
But, uh, thanks so much for the hard work.
Good points.
Yeah, copy, Lewis.
Yeah, well done, mate. Really great drive.
The important one is
we had a good race car.
- Pace was there to win.
- Pace was there to win.
It's clear that this weekend
was a massive step forward.
I mean, the fight,
we've not had that all season
It's all part
of the learning curve.
Cool. See you later.
We had a car that was in the fight again.
Exciting.
- And why can you only do one good start?
- Yeah, only one.
Let's go. They are applauding him.
This is my tenth year
with the team,
but this year more than ever,
we've had to dig so deep
in a different way.
A third place, like, "Wow!"
It felt so good.
But it's definitely been tough
for everybody.
I'm always trying to improve myself,
and, yeah, I'm grateful
for the journey that we've been on.
Sheesh!
I'm a bit nervous about this.
Formula 1 has changed my life.
You know, it's given me a a purpose.
It's given me this opportunity.
As a kid, my dream was to be here,
was to be right here in front of you all.
I love what I do.
I'm not stopping. I'm gonna keep fighting.
And yeah
Thank you so much. I love you guys.
Thank you so much. Sir Lewis Hamilton!
I plan on being around for a while,
so it's game on.
It's quite interesting
how the human mind works, no?
How you're changing
How you're changing your expectations.
You know, you're third-quickest car,
you're over the moon with a third place,
you are right in the fight.
And within one race weekend, you switch
expectations to "We have to win this."
Whether it is for us to fight for
Constructor and Driver World Championship
or for Lewis,
it is it is a new mountain to climb,
and he embraces the situation
as much as we do,
and there is no question
about him leaving the team.
Nearly today. Nearly.
Nearly. Well, it's good
we are back in the fight.
Yeah, definitely. He looks fast.
I think it's clear
that we aim to be back in the front
and hopefully win another championship.
This is clearly the aim.
Ferrari is meant to be fighting for wins.
No words. But we cannot do that.
Oh no!
I'm the one
that cannot put a foot wrong.
Mattia chooses what's right.
They fucked up Leclerc's strategy.
We just have to deal with it.
Has to be heroes and antiheroes.
Unbelievable.
I'm on the dark side.
It's going to be extremely close.
We're gonna give it all we've got.
- Let's fucking go.
- Jesus Christ.
Yeah, we gotta make sure
that we win that battle.
