[Charmaine] Are you gonna
say anything or just
How could you be so selfish?
All I can do, Jack,
is apologize over and over.
- Well, that's not good enough.
- I know.
So, go ahead. Yell at me.
Tell me what a terrible person I am.
[pensive music playing]
That's not why I'm here.
I'm just trying to understand,
after everything I did for you
And Mel too.
I mean, you drag her into this.
I don't get you, Jack.
I thought you'd be relieved
that you and Mel
didn't have to deal with me anymore.
I'm not relieved.
I thought I was gonna be
a father to twin boys,
and you made me believe that.
You made everybody believe that.
For months, I break my back for you,
making sure that you had everything
that you could possibly need.
I would have done anything for those boys.
And you just took it away.
You humiliated me.
And you broke my heart.
Well, now you know how it feels.
Don't you dare put this on me. No.
[desperately] Jack, you don't understand.
The way things ended between us?
Watching you pull away and fall in love
with Mel right under my nose?
That was torture.
And then I found out I was pregnant,
and I was afraid.
And I was alone.
And the worst part about it
was the thought
that I was gonna lose you forever.
So I lied.
What do you expect me to say?
I don't know, Jack.
I just hope you can forgive me.
Have you even told the real father?
Oh, no. [scoffs]
No, that was just a one-time thing.
He's not cut out to be a father.
And how do you know that?
Because he's not like you.
I lied to give the twins a future.
Someone to provide for us.
Isn't there a small part of you
that can sympathize with that?
[pensive music continues]
You have my sympathy, yeah.
Not my forgiveness.
[door opens]
[door closes]
[Brie] This is exactly why I moved.
So that coward couldn't try
to intimidate me out of testifying.
Yeah, well, I don't think
we should just assume it was Don.
Really?
Maybe some drunk teenagers
screwing around or something.
Do you know how many violent criminals
I have prosecuted in my career?
I know a threat when I see one.
Well, how can you be so sure?
Because it felt like one, Brady.
Yeah. Okay.
I hear you.
Come here.
Hey.
I won't let anything happen to you.
Okay?
I promise.

Oh, it was good!
Slow.

It was just so beautiful out there,
I kept getting distracted.

I always knew
there was a chance it could recur, but
it's back.
- That's it.
- [sighs] I'm so sorry.
So the pain you had last night,
that was an endometrioma?
Yeah, luckily it didn't rupture.
But the tissue's
definitely spreading again.
Yay for me.
So, what's your plan, treatment-wise?
I mean, I could always get
another procedure,
try to remove the tissue, but I've lived
with the pain for so long that
Dr. Kane thinks that I should
consider a hysterectomy.
Oh.
How do you feel about that?
I don't know.
Maybe I'll just do it.
I think, you know, that's a
It's a really big decision.
You should think about it. I mean,
were you planning to have kids someday?
You know what? Why don't
we just talk about something else?
Or, uh,
maybe we should just get the check.
Yeah.
"Which is why if you don't reconsider
this ludicrous power grab,
the legitimacy of the office
will forever be tainted. Thank you."
What do you think?
It's really more of a rant than a speech.
Well, I think it's perfect.
Wouldn't change a word.
The ending could use some work
at the very least.
I don't recall asking
the peanut gallery, but go on.
[Denny] Okay.
A great speech lays out
a detailed, action-oriented plan,
and the conclusion
reminds everyone what you plan to do.
I disagree. Think about
the best movie speeches of all time.
Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, The Notebook.
They're all, like, super emotional.
- Are those your favorite movies?
- Don't pretend you don't love them.
Okay, you two, back to business.
I don't mean to brag, but I know
a thing or two about speechwriting.
- Oh, do you?
- Yeah. That's right.
I ran for class president
senior year of high school.
You were class president?
Well, no, I didn't win,
but it had nothing to do with the speech.
The other guy gave out Blow Pops.
What's a Blow Pop?
- Do we need Blow Pops?
- It's not the worst idea.
Don't listen to Denny.
He lost an election to the Lollipop Guild.
[Denny] Oh, and remind me,
did you run for class president?
- [Lizzie] Irrelevant.
- Seems pretty relevant to me.
- Where are you going?
- Headache.
Wait, I'll get your medicine.
Did you see who walked in?
Who?
[woman] Double trouble.
Charmaine, why don't you wait in my office
till the exam room's open.
- Dr. Mullins.
- Cameron.
Oh! Yeah, I meant to ask.
How are you and Doc doing without Mel?
Fine.
[laughs]
That bad, huh?
- We're working out the kinks.
- Well, Doc can be, um
A pain in the neck.
Mercurial, but, yeah, he can be that.
[clears throat]
I know you're not asking for my advice.
No, I'm begging.
Doc can handle a little backbone.
He's married to Hope, for crying out loud.
So if you do have a problem with him,
stand your ground, and he'll respect that.
Thank you for the tip.
I'll give it a shot.
But, first, I need to figure out
how to file these insurance papers.
Oh yeah, he said,
"Figure it out or get out of the way."
Why don't I file those claims for you?
I used to be a dental biller in between
acting gigs when I was living in New York.
- You were an actress?
- [both chuckle]
Well, as Angela Lansbury said,
"Once an actress, always an actress."
Oh my gosh.
- [Doc laughing]
- They're so fast!
- [Doc] Yeah. There you go.
- Oh, thank you.
They're doing great.
And you can talk to Dr. Singer about,
uh, pregnancy-safe SSRIs.
And if you need anything else,
you know where to find me.
Thanks, Doc.
Yeah, and if you can help it,
don't worry about the gossip mill, okay?
I mean, they're gonna
move on to the next story soon enough.
You are a resilient woman, Charmaine.
You get that from your mother.
[scoffs] Yeah, that's not
the only thing I got from her.
Oh? What do you mean?
[sighs] Well, I feel like
my life is just a series of bad choices,
just like Mom.
People gossiped about her, too,
in bars and restaurants.
Though, I think a doctor's office
is probably a first.
And here I am.
All alone and mad at the world,
just like her.
Is that how you remember her?
Because I remember a lovely, brave,
whip-smart young woman, just like you.
Rachel was fiercely independent.
All I'm saying is
is once you let yourself
see how wonderful you are,
the right person will see it too.
Thanks, Doc.
Yeah. Never too late
to start believing in yourself.
- I'll try.
- [laughs] Yeah.
[Jack] Brie, I'm, um
I'm so sorry that happened.
I want you to know
I think you're a superhero.
You're just realizing that now?
[hoarsely] I mean it.
And you better believe that I'm gonna be
right by your side the day of the trial.
Actually, that's part of what
I wanted to talk to you about.
- I don't think that's a good idea.
- Of course I'm gonna be there.
I want to see
the look in that son of a bitch's eyes
- when you put him behind bars.
- And if I don't win?
What, you're gonna
kick Don's ass in the courtroom?
- Yeah, and I'll take that rock
- This is what I was worried about.
This isn't your fight.
It's gonna be hard enough to tell
a room full of strangers what happened.
And the last thing I need
is to worry about your reaction.
You really don't want me there?
What I need right now is your support.
Not your protection.
Okay.
You're right. I'm sorry.
I just can't stomach
the idea of you being there alone.
Well, I'm not.
Brady's coming.
He has been there every step of the way.
If you really want to support me
you'll give him another chance.
What do you have in mind?
Dinner, my new place, tonight.
- You, me, Mel, and Brady.
- Oh, cute.
[chuckling] I don't have silverware yet,
but I do feel like hosting.
And you have a restaurant,
so I think we'll make do.
[Jack] Uh
It's really important to me.
Yeah, I'll text Mel
as soon as we get reception.
[exhales]
Are you sure
there's nothing else I can do?
- You were the victim of a horrible crime.
- I'm not a victim, Jack.
I'm a survivor.

- Well, what are you looking for?
- I want what my folks have.
A soul mate.
I don't know.
I guess I'm just old-fashioned.
How did they meet?
My father, he was in the Coast Guard,
stationed down in Charleston.
One day, he's on the beach,
and he sees
a woman get caught in a riptide.
Swam out, saved her life.
They have been inseparable ever since.
- Wow.
- [Preacher laughs]
Preach, the timer went off.
What do you want me to do with this?
Do you want to try
my mom's famous mac and cheese?
Oh, yeah.
I'm gonna go with yes on that. Yeah.
Thank you.
What?
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
[exclaims]
- Voilà.
- Thanks.
- I had really good timing today.
- [laughs]
- Oh my God.
- [Preacher chuckling]
Oh my God. Is that lobster?
No, that is blue crab.
Now, that part is my addition,
but it is my mom's recipe.
Been thinking about adding
a few of her dishes to the menu.
Kind of an "elevated comfort food"
sort of thing.
[Mel] Mmm-hmm.
I've been feeling lost all day,
so I just wanted to cook something
that made me feel good.
When I was in Iraq, it was lonely.
So I would scrounge up whatever I could.
Make one of her recipes.
Felt like my mom
was there with me, like home.
Still does.
Excuse me, and I will be right back.
Okay. Sure.
[pensive music playing]
[knock on door]
- [Lizzie] How's the head?
- [sighs] A little better. Thanks.
What's that?
Oh.
"In honor of Hope McCrea,
the first mayor of Virgin River."
I didn't know you were the first mayor.
[Hope] First and only.
When I moved here,
Virgin River was what's called
"an unincorporated community."
But when more and more people
started turning up, our needs changed.
We needed a post office, a general store.
So I wrote up a charter
and suddenly, we needed a mayor.
I didn't even run. I was nominated.
Elected unanimously.
And I've been doing it ever since.
[Lizzie] Whoa.
Being mayor of this town
it's not what I do, it's
who I am.
The accident took so much from me,
but my job
was the one part of my identity
the TBI couldn't touch.
Maybe that's
why I care so much about it,
why I won't go down without a fight.
[somber music playing]
[clears throat]
Why are you looking at me like that?
Well, that's your speech.
Lizzie's right.
You should just speak from the heart.
That's not exactly my specialty.
Well, it sounded pretty good just now.
Want to try it one more time?
- [indistinct chatter]
- [country music playing on radio]
[Mel] Hey!
- [Jack] Hey, you.
- Hey.
Hi.
Mmm.
What was that for?
For being there for my sister.
I don't know, maybe if I hadn't of
[sighs]
been so caught up with Charmaine,
and the twins, and
Maybe I would've had more time for her.
Maybe she would've told me sooner.
No, Brie decided to tell you
when the time was right for her.
Yeah, I know. I just
I don't feel like I've really
been there for her lately, you know?
Or anyone.
- Why, you think because of Charmaine?
- Yeah, it kills me.
It just
[sighs] Like, when is this gonna end?
Probably not until you forgive her.
Oh, you think I should forgive her?
Until you get some real closure,
she's never gonna be
out of your life. Or ours.
- I mean, even if she's not around.
- How do you forgive the unforgivable?
You start by taking responsibility
for your part.
Well, hold on. Whose side are you on here?
- Yours! Come on.
- It doesn't sound like it!
- Always, honey. Always.
- But?
But
For, you know, two years,
Charmaine was convinced
that you had a future together.
Oh, come on. I never once said that
I was interested in something long-term.
No, I I know you didn't. I know.
Just hear me out, okay? You
I think because
you don't like letting people down,
that a part of you let her believe that.
[Jack grunts]
I mean, maybe forgiveness
is gonna help you both move on.
You think she deserves it?
Maybe, maybe not.
But I know that you do.
- Okay.
- Oh, hey, Preacher made something.
I mean, it's amazing.
Do you mind grabbing some
so we can bring it to Brie's?
Sure. I mean, wow, what is it?
- It's your newest signature dish.
- Ooh, intriguing.
Yes.
Yeah, all right. Thanks.
I'll see you later.
[upbeat music playing]
[knock on door]
- [Doc] Yep.
- [door opens]
We need to talk.
Okay, talk.
I understand you're
getting used to life without Mel, and
I own the part
that I played in her resignation.
I am sorry, I truly am.
But you hired me to be a doctor.
I know you've known me
since I was a boy, but
I'm a doctor now.
And I'm a damn good one.
I was right about Bert, and I'm gonna help
a whole lot of people in this town.
When we're at work, I would appreciate it
if you drop the patronizing tone
and talk to me like a man.
Is that it?
That's it.
I apologize, Dr. Hayek.
And I appreciate your honesty.
You are absolutely right.
Thank you.
But the fact is, Mel is irreplaceable.
So we are gonna have to figure out
some way to pick up the slack
- Yeah.
- [woman humming indistinctly]
- [dishes plinking faintly]
- What the hell?
[humming continues]

When I moved here,
Virgin River was what's called
"an unincorporated community."
But when more and more people
started turning up, our needs changed.
We needed a post office, a general store.
So I wrote up a charter
and suddenly, we needed a mayor.
I didn't even run. I was nominated.
Elected unanimously.
And I've been doing it ever since.
[Lizzie] Whoa.
Being mayor of this town
it's not what I do, it's
who I am.
The accident took so much from me,

why I won't go down without a fight.
