Get in.
I think I'm ready to come back.
- Finally.

We're not open yet.
Marcus.
DANTE: Hey, Robyn.
ROBYN: What are you doing in New York?
DANTE: It's Big Ben.
He's taken a turn for the worse.
Dante is in town.
You know how much I like that man.
Maybe Dante is just too much like you.
He cares more about helping other people
than he does himself.
When he's needed,
he will be on the next plane.
So my ex, she said,
"I've been at the beauty salon all day.
Can't you tell?"
I said, "No.
If I sit in the garage,
that doesn't make me a car."

My ex seemed sweet.
But then again,
salt and sugar look the same
until you taste them, you know?
So you know what I told her, right?
[AUDIENCE JOINS IN]: See you, Markesha!
Y'all are the best. Thank you.
All right, I-I have news.
I have news for y'all.
Um, it's been a long road back,
but it's official:
I'm joining
the Without Warning Tour. Hmm?
Uncensored and unrestrained!
[CHEERS AND APPLAUSE]
MAN: Craig! Craig! Craig!
CRAIG: Thank you all so much.
COMEDIAN: Hey, Craig!
MALE COMEDIAN: Good job, man.
FEMALE COMEDIAN:
Hey, congrats on the tour.
Happy for you, Craig.
Good job, man.
Cliff!
- Hey.
- Oh. Oh.
You heard the news, right?
New tour means new material, ASAP.
- All right, baby, let's go.
- My man.
Come here, angel.
You are back. Honey.
Mm. Mmm
- I am back.
- [CHUCKLES]
Thank you.
I know. I need you in the crowd
at all my shows, for real.
[BOTH LAUGH]
- You were amazing.
- You think so?
Look, you know, a lot of that
was just off the dome.
Well, yeah, but you just need
to get in some more sets.
Tweak some material, and you
are gonna kill on this tour.
Damn straight. And I got
to make sure there's green M&Ms
and white kittens in all my hotel rooms.
[BOTH LAUGH]
Don't forget to tell them
about what I want.
Oh, I won't, baby.
I feel like our lives are
about to change, my love.
Craig, look out!
SHAUNA: No!
No! Oh, my God, Craig!
Oh, my goodness, that
could've killed you.
Oh, my goodness, are you okay?
- Yeah. Yeah.
- Are you okay?
I think so.
[YAWNS]
Whew. Morning, Auntie.
Morning, sweetheart. Coffee?
- No, thanks.
- [CHUCKLES]: That yawn
is a silent scream for caffeine.
Oh, no, I'm having,
uh, coffee with Marcus.
Mm. Marcus.
Not Miles?
- Maybe I will have some coffee.
- No.
- Too late for coffee.
- [LAUGHS]
It is tea time.
Come on now. Spill it.
There's nothing really to spill.
I mean, Marcus and I are
good friends.
Okay.
I still have feelings.
Lots of feelings. But
I'm able to compartmentalize that
for the sake of our friendship.
I hear your words, but
[INHALES] Mmm.
That perfume is saying something else.
[LAUGHING]

Oh.
[CHUCKLES]

Something you want to tell me?
No, I do not.
Come on, Auntie. What's-what's going on?
[FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING]
- Morning, sweetie.
- Morning, sweetie.
- Want some eggs?
- No, thanks.
Dee, you okay?
Yeah, I'm fine. Just didn't sleep well.
Hey.
What's going on, baby girl?
When Dad and I were wrapping up
our college tour yesterday,
the admissions rep assured me
I'd be a shoo-in.
But?
They said my GPA
and extracurriculars were great
and, best of all,
that I "checked all of their boxes."
Okay. There you go.
I just can't help but think
they meant DEI boxes.
I mean, do they only want to
accept me because I'm Black?
Oh, sweetheart.
You are an amazing young woman.
The fact that you even have to
ask that question is a crying shame.
ROBYN: And you may never
know what that man meant.
But it's not about how he sees you.
It's about how you see you.
Thanks, Mom.
Let me give you a ride to school.
And if you ever need to talk, I'm here.
Thanks.
For you, too, Auntie.
There you are.
Hey, Marcus.
Careful.
Coffee's a lot hotter
in Brooklyn than in L.A.
Well, a little heat never hurts.
No, it doesn't.
It's good to see you.
You, too.
So, how's everything with Big Ben?
Well, he's headed to rehab soon.
And some long-term decisions
about his care have to be made.
Right now there are
still a lot of unknowns.
What about things in your world?
I hear Mel's coming back.
How's that going?
Fine so far, but
but I'm worried she's
coming back too soon.
If she's not right, if she hesitates
for a second at the wrong time
But still
there's no other person
I'd rather have my back.
I get that. It's hard to find
people you can count on.
[CHUCKLES SOFTLY]
I've missed this.
[PHONE DINGS]
But I don't miss that.
[SIGHS]
Duty calls.
Thanks for the coffee.
Thanks for meeting me.
I don't know where else to turn.
Do you have any idea who's
trying to kill your husband?
None. All I know for sure
is that when Craig was almost run over,
definitely wasn't an accident.
Well, what do the police say?
Craig won't let me go to the police.
Why not?
I don't know.
Well, that seems pretty strange.
I know. I have tried
to talk to him about it,
but he refuses to take it seriously.
Maybe because he's
so caught up with preparing
for this new
Without Warning comedy tour.
Wait. Craig.
Craig Harris is your husband?
As in "See you, Markesha"?
He's a pretty funny guy.
Been out of the spotlight
for a few years.
Yeah, it's been hard on him.
Very hard.
One minute, he's on top of the world.
Then COVID hits.
All his show dates
and movie gigs are canceled.
Yeah, that had to be difficult for you.
Even more so for Craig.
I had never seen him so down.
N-Now, just as things seem
to be turning around,
this happens and
I'm sorry. I just
[SHUDDERS]
I can't seem to
[SIGHS]
He went to the store last night,
and I was terrified
he wouldn't make it home.
Having to worry about your
loved ones all the time
that's tough.
Please, will you help us?
I promise you, I will look into it.
Oh, Mel.
- Hey.
- Hey yourself.
What?
- What's wrong?
- No, it's just,
- you're-you're here.
- Okay.
First, Harry's weird.
Now Did you guys think
I was kidding about,
you know, coming back?
Of course not. I'm glad you're back.
All right.
Yeah. As long as
you're glad you're back.
- Oh, my God. I'm-I'm glad.
- Terrific.
Everybody's glad.
What happened to you?
Wounded in action?
- Hmm, yeah.
- Kinda. I mean, all that typing
took its toll.
Well, that's quite the cast for
carpal tunnel.
HARRY: Well, you know,
bigger the computer, the bigger the
tunnel. I don't know.
Long as you're not in pain.
No, no. All right, enough
about my, uh, compressed nerves
and tendons.
Let's, uh, talk
about Craig Harris, shall we?
Typical underdog story.
Grew up in Dallas, oldest of three kids.
Average high school student.
Voted class clown.
Dropped out of college
to become a comedian.
And, boy, did he.
AUDIENCE: See you, Markesha!
Bam!
Thank y'all so much.
His wife mentioned they've been through
- some tough times recently.
- Yeah, well,
the pandemic
basically killed his career.
And then he made a series
of really bad investments
that couldn't help matters.
None of which points to why
anyone would want to kill him.
Were you able to pull the video
of the incident his wife mentioned?
Yeah. Not that it's really gonna help.
I mean, the-the plates are blacked out.
And it's so dark, you can't see
who's behind the wheel.
Is there any chance Shauna
misinterpreted what happened?
You can judge for yourself.
I mean, either that guy
is in some serious need
- of driving lessons or
- She's right.
- That was deliberate.
- MEL: And brazen.
Whoever did that is not gonna
be satisfied with a near miss.
Shauna said he's usually at
the comedy club most mornings
working on his act,
so I'm gonna talk to him.
- I'll go with you.
- Oh, don't worry, I got this.
You're welcome to come.
I mean, it's just a simple
client interview.
Nah, it's fine. It's fine,
I'm here if you need me.
[EXHALES]
Craig Harris?
That's right. Ha!
I always got time for a picture
with my fans, come on.
Oh, okay, easy, easy, easy, okay, ah!
- Geez.
- I'm not here for a selfie.
Your wife sent me
about that murder attempt
from two nights ago.
Look, I know she's worried
about me, but there was
no murder attempt, all right?
I'm sorry that Shauna's
wasting your time.
I'm surprised you're not more
concerned about your own safety.
Look, Shauna's wrong, okay?
There's nobody trying
to kill me. [LAUGHS]
[ENGINE STARTS]
ROBYN: Brake fluid.
Craig, wait!
- [GROANS]
- ROBYN: Hey.
You okay?
- I-I I think so.
- You good?
Brakes don't randomly go out like that.
Someone definitely wants you dead.
Okay, you're right.
Someone is trying to kill me, but
only because I asked them to.
There you go.
That was definitely not an accident.
Your brake line has a clean cut.
Now, why would you possibly
ask someone to kill you?
Some kind of publicity stunt?
It's hard to explain.
I did it to take care of my family.
I'm gonna need you to elaborate.
Look, you got to understand, all right?
I'd made it finally.
I had the big house, had the fly cars,
private school for my kids.
I was living the dream.
And then your career stalled.
At first, I used savings to stay afloat.
When those ran out,
I had to rob Peter to pay Paul
by borrowing money from my friends.
Why not just downsize your life?
We did.
[SIGHS]
Look.
When I was 16, my little brother
died of sickle cell.
My family couldn't afford
his medical care.
Sorry for your loss.
I was determined that poverty
would never hurt my family again.
So I busted my ass to make
something of myself, and I did.
And then
my son, he falls down
and breaks his arm.
And I couldn't afford his hospital bill.
I felt so worthless.
I couldn't get out of bed
in the morning.
I couldn't look myself in the mirror.
And then it occurred to me, I
was worth more dead than alive.
So I got my friends together
and I asked them to take me out.
So that your friends
and family could collect
the insurance payout.
It felt like the only option.
And then I booked this tour, you know?
And I'm-I'm excited.
And I got so caught up
in working on my act
That you forgot to call off the hit?
You know, to be honest,
I didn't think I had to.
Because my friends seemed so insulted
by this crazy thing
that I asked them to do.
Then, after I almost got run over,
I made sure to let them know
that the deal was off
and that I was gonna update my insurance
when my lawyer got into town on Friday.
Wait, so they know
they could still collect
on your death till tomorrow?
Yeah, but they'd never betray me.
I trust them with my life.
That's why I trusted 'em with my death.
They're my guys.
Well, then your guys won't mind
answering a few questions.
The doctor says Pop will need
rehab once he's released.
I'm happy to cover facility costs,
but we can also do full-time
home care if you prefer.
I can't. I can't. I cannot have
your father come live with me.
I am done putting his needs before mine.
What do you mean?
I mean,
I filed for divorce.
Guess that explains
why your ring is missing.
Can't say I blame you. Only, why now?
After standing by him all this time?
When you were younger,
I hung in there for your sake.
Yeah, but then he got out,
and reality just
smacked me in my face.
As long as you're happy,
that's all that counts.
Thank you. I am.
And you know I'm always
here for you, honey.
[SIGHS]
But it was just time
to let your father go.
I mean, I had dealt with so much drama
most women wouldn't even tolerate.
You knew, didn't you, about?
James. Yeah.
He finally told you, huh?
You knew I had a brother,
and you didn't tell me?
Honey, how could I?
You were angry with him all the time.
- That would have made it worse.
- I still had a right to know.
Looking back, maybe
I should have told you.
But you know what? I had a lot
of hard decisions to make.
I did the best that I could.
I should go.
Mom, wait.
The truth is, we have both
fulfilled our obligations
to your father, and then some.
And you have a choice.
You can deal with him or not.
My decision has already been made.
[EXHALES]
So, these are the guys
Craig asked to kill him?
Yup.
HARRY: First up, Trey Fletcher.
He was Craig's roommate in college,
and he's got a business in Williamsburg
known as PP Palooza.
He should've workshopped a better name.
Home of pizza and pickleball.
Went bankrupt a few years ago.
Seems like it's rebounded, though.
Friend number two is Austin Williams.
They've been tight
since they were both in diapers.
Austin was his assistant
till Craig could no longer
afford to pay him.
He's now working as a plumber.
Well, he probably clears
more as a plumber
than he did as Craig's assistant.
And the third one?
Vester Lee, seasoned comic.
He used to be Craig's mentor
until Craig's success eclipsed
his own a few years ago.
All right, so the student
becomes the teacher.
Yeah, but he's landed on his feet.
He's writing copy for commercials now.
Okay, so none of them have
glaring financial problems,
but we still think one of them
tried to kill Craig for money?
We need to talk to Craig's friends.
So, Trey, your, uh,
pickleball business went
bankrupt a few years ago, right?
That's the price
of being a pioneer, right?
- Look at me now.
- Yeah.
But it went bankrupt
because Craig pulled out
as an investor.
People change their minds.
And refused to do a promotion
- that he promised?
- Well, people get busy
- with other things.
- 'Cause it was a
"dumb idea that only an
idiot would think of,"
he told Howard Stern
ooh and his ten million listeners.
Which is when the rest of
my investors pulled out, yeah.
Hey, do you recognize
this pic you posted?
You getting up close
and personal with Shauna,
Craig's wife?
That was way before Craig knew her.
Shauna and I went out a few times.
How about, uh, this pic?
That's you and Markesha,
Craig's first wife.
#ForeverMyLady. #TrueLove.
#MySoulmate.
Hash Ooh, I can't say that.
- You use a lot of hashtags.
- Okay!
We shared everything as kids.
The son of a bitch took it too far.
It says right here
that you told Craig
I'll save you the time.
Yes, I woke up in the
middle of the night
to my car being towed.
Tow driver said it was being repo'd,
and we ended up getting into it.
Turned out,
Craig set it all up as a stupid prank.
Well, that would make me mad as hell.
Not as mad as when that jackass
asked me to kill him for money.
MEL: Ooh. Those are some angry friends.
Yeah, but their alibis all check out.
Which means someone else
is trying to kill Craig.
Someone he didn't ask.
HARRY: Okay, so, back to square one.
I'll just dig deeper into Craig's life
and try and find some new leads.
Yeah, I want to talk to Craig again.
If he didn't tell us what his
best friends thought of him
Then what's he holding back
about his enemies?
You know what, Rob?
I'm gonna go with you,
because that last simple
interview wasn't so simple.
Okay, guys, can both of you stop acting
like I'm some tag-along kid
you have to worry about?
Either I'm on this team or I'm not.
Yeah. No, okay.
Let's go.
Thanks for picking me up, Aunt Vi,
but I have an essay to write.
I really do not have time
to be meeting someone right now.
You see, that's exactly the problem.
Life is about more than just academics.
So is the college experience.
But Dad has made it very clear
he thinks my experience should
be at one of the top colleges.
You know, ones that dominate
all those lists.
Well, maybe those are the wrong lists.
Spelman ranks among
the top colleges in the country.
South Carolina State is great.
And Howard has an amazing
global leadership program.
- Really?
- Yeah.
Just because the HBCUs fly
under the radar does not mean
that they are not worthy options.
But you didn't go to an HBCU.
I mean, you went to UC Berkeley.
Yeah, I know, because
that was right for me.
You have to find the college
that is perfect for you.
Well, that school yesterday
was definitely not it.
Mm-hmm.
Wouldn't it be nice to go
someplace where you're celebrated
not just tolerated?
[LAUGHTER]
- Oh, my God.
- And then you say,
"How do I know they're not after you?
What kind of stuff are you into?"

- Oh, yeah, man.
- Thanks.
So, what's up? You talk to my people?
Yeah, looks like they're all clear.
See? I told you.
Yeah, but what you didn't tell us was
that they all have grudges against you.
You bankrupted one, you stole
both your wives from another.
Come on. That's all in the past.
The point is, we can't
figure out who wants you dead
unless you tell us these things.
- I didn't think of that.
- MEL: Okay, is there anyone else
- in your family?
- Order for Craig Harris?
- Take care.
- Ah!
It's my usual. [LAUGHS]

Another delivery guy said
he'd just got a big order
in the opposite direction.
Gave me 40 bucks
- to make this drop for him.
- What'd he look like?
I don't know, white, bald,
weird birthmark on his head.
Trey?
It couldn't be him.
Sounds like the joke's on you.
[GRUNTS]

I don't know what you're talking about.
His business is booming, guys.
He wouldn't do this to me, all right?
Tell bro, tell 'em
you didn't do this, all right?
Tell 'em they're wrong.
When you bailed on our deal,
I had to borrow
from some bad people, and
they want their money yesterday.
You-you-you-you tried
to poison me to pay off a debt?
Yeah, so I could stay alive.
You came to me with a solution
to the problem you got me into.
I thought Harry said he had
a solid alibi for the attempts.
Yeah.
I didn't have anything to do with those.
So, what, you heard someone else
was trying to kill him
and figured you'd take advantage
of the opportunity?
So that someone else
would take the fall?
I'm gonna call the cops.

Hey, Rob, so, uh, my research
into who might have it in
for Craig took
a kind of interesting turn.
I started sifting through
his old stand-up routines,
and it seems like his biggest jokes
targeted his ex-wife Markesha.
In fact, I mean,
that was his catchphrase.
"See you, Markesha."
Yeah, I'm familiar with it.
Markesha was a totally
successful relationship guru
until she became better known
as the butt of Craig's jokes.

like she's doing better.
She's got a new book,
it hit the Best Seller list.
