Sea Patrol (2007) s05e07 Episode Script

Black Flights

CHARGE: Do you see anyone on board, Dutchy? DUTCHY: She hasn't responded to our hail, sir.
She's just drifting.
Could be abandoned.
OK.
X, take a look.
Yes, sir.
Hang on a minute, Ryan.
You OK? Yeah.
I'm fine.
XO: Right, Dutchy, White, check portside.
You two, wheelhouse.
Aye, ma'am.
Hey! Hey, what the hell? Australian Navy! Am I glad to see you guys! Lightning strike yesterday fried all my electrics.
Been adrift ever since trying to get her going.
X, the circuit-breakers on the switch panel are melted.
CHARGE: Engine needs rewiring.
She's not going anywhere under her own steam.
XO: OK.
Where's home port for you? Winston.
It's a little fishing town.
That way.
Alright.
Well, we'll see what we can do, eh? Thanks.
Must have been one hell of a lightning strike.
Blew me off my feet.
What's your name? Leigh.
I'm Ryan, mate.
MIKE: There's a serious sandbank at the entrance to Winston Harbour.
We should be able to just get in there at high tide.
Means we'll have to overnight.
XO: I'm sure the crew won't mind unscheduled R and R, sir.
I'm sure they won't.
So, there's a poker game happening out of town.
I'm gonna give them a little bit of a lesson.
You really think that's a good idea? Mate, it's a top idea.
Don't wait up.
(LAUGHS) He'll never learn, will he? Nope.
Want another? Yeah, yeah, cheers.
Beer for you, Bundy and Coke for you, and a squash for me.
Are you, uh, staying sober to hustle us? I'm not legal yet.
Only 17.
You don't look it.
Uh-uh.
So are you guys, you know on together? Oh, no.
No, no, no.
No, no, no.
That could, um, never happen.
Could it, Bird? No, could never happen.
Not in this man's navy, my friend.
Bird and I are just good mates.
(TYRES SCREECH) (GROANS) Oh, guys, don't Don't be like that! It's only money! (PHONE BEEPS) (PHONE TRILLS) Oh Where the hell? (INSECT BUZZES) Oh! Ah! (GROANS) What? What the? (GROANS) (YELLS) (SPITS) Uh, heart attack on a plate as usual, Charge? Ha-ha.
Just beans on toast, thanks, Bird.
We'll get underway as soon as the tide allows.
Sir.
Just in.
Or maybe not.
Fleet met officer has just issued a cyclone warning for waters to our north.
Looks like we'll be staying put for another 24 hours.
That'll give us an opportunity to catch up on some non-essential maintenance work.
You mean fishing and footy, yeah? Mmm.
Hey, has anyone seen 2Dads? (PHONE RINGS) Um Hello.
CHARGE: I told you, buddy.
Can't do the time, don't do the crime.
CHARGE: Stand by to recover the sea boat.
What happened to you? Um not really sure, ma'am.
Oh, you're not sure.
Well, you smell like a brewery.
Yes, ma'am.
Some locals Some locals didn't take too well to losing, and I had to walk some of the way.
Last thing I remember was a bright light in the sky.
Hmm.
A bright light? Yes, ma'am.
What sort of a bright light? It was like something out of this world, ma'am.
Are you having a lend of me, leader? No, ma'am.
If we hadn't changed our plans to sail this morning, you would be in very serious trouble.
Yes, ma'am.
I'm really sorry, ma'am.
It won't happen again, ma'am.
Yeah, until next time.
Yes, ma'am.
I mean, no, ma'am.
I mean Get yourself cleaned up before the CO sees you.
Yes, ma'am.
Thank you, ma'am.
Very much.
Alright, so take two of these and try and get some rest.
Thanks.
(SIGHS) Is there anything else you need to ask me? Not that I can think of.
No unusual marks or anything like that on your body? I got mozzie bites on my leg, but that's about it.
Better take a look.
See? Oh, my God.
Bird.
What? These aren't mozzie bites, mate.
They're not? What are they? They're probe marks.
What?! Does it hurt to sit down? Did they go in the rectal route? You know, if my head wasn't about to explode, I'd tell you where to stick yours.
From who? E.
T.
He wants you to phone home.
(SWAIN LAUGHS) Boom.
There'll be payback and I will have the last laugh.
Word is you saw a UFO, a bright light in the sky.
I didn't see anything, Charge.
I got drunk and passed out.
No, you didn't.
Yeah, I did.
Take a seat and tell me what happened.
Charge Hey.
I believe you.
RYAN: Hanging out, doing whatever you like.
Doesn't seem like such a bad life to me.
Yeah, me either.
Hey, my boat's being fixed.
What's your excuse? Tropical Cyclone Hugo.
Yeah, normally we'd be hard at work.
Me too.
Fishing? Yeah.
What does your mum do? She died when I was a kid.
Sorry.
That's OK.
Dad's the one who's had it hard, being Dad and Mum.
I had it the other way round, growing up just with Mum.
You understand, then.
Tap's for girls.
Tackle.
BIRD: Guys.
If you guys think I'm playing tackle, you're nuts.
(RYAN LAUGHS) Gotcha.
CHARGE: An open mind, man, that's the key.
I mean, northern Australia's notorious for sightings.
for big drinkers.
CHARGE: OK.
We can do a U-turn if you want.
I reckon the guys will be sick of telling jokes in couple of weeks.
But then it'll all kick back in again once we get back to base.
But if we could just find something to make them eat their words, eh? OK, OK.
Keep going.
CHARGE: Good choice.
Yeah, that fallen log.
Yeah? Yeah.
That's where I hit the beach.
OK.
Let's head inland from there, eh? (2DADS TAPS TORCH) CHARGE: Will you stop doing that? Well, you're the electrics specialist.
Fix it.
I'm gonna do that with all the tools that I brought, yeah? You're a tool.
There.
It's off.
I reckon over the next rise and we'll be there.
Then what? Well, then we look for I don't know.
Recent signs of landings.
Why would guys with big-arse brains make their way all the way to here, middle of nowhere? The fishing? (LAUGHS) I don't know.
I'm just here to investigate.
Char Come on! (DISTANT WHIRRING) Oh, is that a Shh, shh, shh.
Come on.
We got to get closer.
Keep down.
MAN: Let's get a move on.
Haven't got all night.
are in the boxes? CHARGE: Whatever it is, it's not legal.
MAN: Make sure everything's secure.
Turn it off.
I can't.
CHARGE: Turn it off! Turn it off.
Turn it off! There's someone over there.
Go get 'em! I want them dead! Go! Go, go, go, go! MAN: Go get 'em! Hurry up! Move! Move! Move! Turn it off, for God's sake! I can't.
I can't! Just keep running! Run! Duck into the bushes! (GUNFIRE) That was close.
Yeah.
Arggh! Charge! What's wrong? I'm OK.
Are you sure? Yeah.
Got me scared.
What's going on? It's just a stitch.
Just a stitch?! Yes! (ENGINE DRONES) Any sign of the ute? Nah, they've gone.
You gotta get Swain to take a look at that, mate.
Fine! Charge! Hey, stop it! We've got to get out of here.
I lost my bearings.
Which way? Not sure.
I got out of here once before.
I can do it again.
Right.
Right.
This way.
No, this way.
Come on.
Charge.
You sure this is the way to the beach? Yeah, positive.
Then what are we doing on a road? (MAN COCKS GUN) You boys stand real still, now.
CHARGE: We're Australian Navy.
If you kill us, you'll have them to answer to.
MAN: Well, who said anything about killing anybody? And what the hell are two navy boys doing out here in the middle of nowhere? So an orienteering exercise? Yeah.
You're a bit of a ways from the ocean.
That's our problem.
We're not much good on dry land.
Got lost.
What about you, Sarge? What are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere? Well, I was having a comfort stop, I saw you two come out of the bush.
You made me splash my boots.
No, I'm just doing my rounds.
I got a precinct out here the size of Victoria.
Right.
So are you pretty familiar with these parts? Oh, no, no.
I just took up the posting.
But I am looking forward to some fresh barra and a cold beer.
So, what's this about a black flight? Well, they were definitely smuggling something, sir.
What were you doing out there in the first place? The truth, Charge.
We were looking for 2Dads's UFO.
Well, not actually really my UFO, sir.
It was Charge's idea.
You two swear you haven't been drinking? Sir! Alright, did you tell the police officer who drove you back? About the UFO or the flight? The flight.
No, sir.
Why not? We didn't trust him.
So he's part of the conspiracy too? I don't know, sir.
He says he's new around here, but He say where he was from? No.
Why? Do you know him? No, he just looks familiar.
Did you get the registration number of the aircraft? Uh Uh Did you see what the cargo was? Well, we just saw styrofoam boxes.
Styrofoam boxes, sir.
That could have been anything.
That's when they started shooting at us.
Yes.
Righto.
Write up a report.
But without more information, I don't think there's much NAVCOM can do.
Charge.
Charge! You gonna tell Swain? About what? About your stitch.
No.
Charge, I'm worried about you.
Well, your concern's touching, but I'm fine, so Write up the report.
I'm going to bed.
Hey.
Why am I writing the report? 'Cause you started it.
I start How did You started it! Oh, right.
God.
Oh, look at that.
The thing with the thing and the thing.
Goodnight.
(SIGHS) That's just Hey! Sorry.
So do you reckon there's stingers out there? Trust me.
Totally safe.
Local knowledge.
(PHONE BEEPS) Uh, Ryan, we've got notice to sail.
Cyclone must have been downgraded.
How long? Guys? Sorry.
We said this might just be a quickie.
Didn't think it'd be this quick.
Ryan, we really should move it.
Yeah, I'm coming.
You'll keep in touch, right? Yeah, of course.
Sometimes I get up to Cairns, and maybe we can hook up.
Absolutely.
That'd be great.
You mean that? Yeah, of course.
Oh! Hey, do you want a hand? What the hell are you doing? I'm sorry.
I thought No.
I'm sorry.
Nope.
Just back off.
Whatever you're thinking is wrong.
I'm so sorry.
I'm sorry.
Ma'am, we have a radar contact, bearing 1-0-8.
Possible FFV.
Alright, steer 1-0-8.
Steering 1-0-8.
Sir, I've got a visual up.
MIKE: That's young Leigh's boat.
RO, hail him on VHF 16.
XO: What is it this time, you think? RO: Are you receiving? Over.
Lightning doesn't strike twice.
That's a fallacy, Charge.
Because it does strike twice quite often.
An acquaintance of mine, Russell, twice.
Thank you, Robert.
Alright, 2Dads in charge.
Grab whatever tools you need.
Aye, ma'am.
Ryan, you can go too.
What? He's your mate.
Lend a hand.
I've got stuff to do here, sir.
Whatever it is, it can wait.
Move it.
Aye, sir.
Leigh! Hey, Leigh! Swain at the rush! Swain! Looks like he's OD'd.
Alright, let's get him back on 'Hammersley'.
Quick.
XO: OK.
Captain, X.
Watch out for that needle.
How's he doing, Swain? Look, he keeps dropping in and out of consciousness.
We really need to get him to a proper medical facility.
Well, the closest one would be the bush hospital back in Winston.
We'd just make it in on the tide.
It'd mean laying over another night.
I don't think we've got much choice.
OK.
Has he said anything at all? Only one thing.
Begged us not to tell his dad.
Alright.
Well, let me know if there's any change.
Sir.
I reckon there's a good chance that it was heroin in those boxes the other night.
Possibly.
Let's question the kid.
He's in no fit state.
But, sir Charge, this is a police matter now.
We leave it to them.
Yes, sir.
Sir.
Bird.
You OK? It just doesn't make sense.
I mean, he didn't even drink.
Why would he do something like this? I don't know.
SWAIN: Recovered better than I thought he would have.
They're just gonna continue to hydrate him and keep him under observation for the next few days.
That's good news.
Where's his father? Uh, hospital's trying to contact him.
Apparently, he's been out fishing.
SWAIN: Yeah, I, uh I worked out where I remember Sergeant Wild from.
He was a copper in Brisbane.
Did you work with him? No.
No, but I heard on the grapevine he got himself into a bit of strife.
He was allegedly involved with some organised crime figures down there.
Allegedly? Well Got hauled in front of the Integrity Commission.
Nothing could be proved, so he couldn't be sacked.
The feeling was he was in it up to his eyeballs.
So this posting to the boonies? Punishment posting.
Imagine the powers that be would be hoping he'd get jack of the isolation and just quit.
Unless, of course, you saw the chance to feather your nest with a chunk of drug money.
BIRD: I didn't get a chance to talk to him.
After I finish up here, I might go see him in hospital.
Do you want to come? No.
Got work to do.
So are you guys on together? Oh, no.
No, no, no.
No, no, no.
That could never happen.
Bird are I are just good mates.
What the hell are you doing? I'm sorry.
I thought you No, just back off.
Whatever you thought was No, wrong.
I'm so sorry.
Ryan.
Hey.
I thought you weren't coming.
Yeah, I got my stuff done.
Have you seen him? No, the police sergeant's still in there.
(DOOR OPENS) He's all yours.
Hey.
Are you OK? BIRD: You know, you don't have to face this on your own.
There are people you can talk to.
Not in Winston, there aren't.
RYAN: Yeah, you don't have to stay here.
Who says he doesn't? Dad.
It's awfully quiet in there.
Stay away from my son.
You hear me? Ryan.
Ryan! Get out.
Mate, let us help.
I don't want your help.
Get out! Leigh Why'd you have to find me? I'd be dead.
I'd be out of here.
Mate, you don't mean that.
I do! It's the only way I'm going to get away.
From your dad? Don't pretend you care! Just piss off! Get on your bike and piss off, all of you! Come on.
CHARGE: Maybe we could just ask a couple of questions.
Charge.
that chased us? Could be.
I think it is.
Just don't have another stitch on me, OK? Very funny.
There.
That's him.
CHARGE: It's one of the blokes from the estuary the other night loading the plane.
You sure? Positive.
(SPEAKS INAUDIBLY) Oh.
That proves it.
CHARGE: It means Wild's bent.
Swain told us about this guy's past.
So we follow the copper, yeah? Yeah.
(SPEAKS INAUDIBLY) I reckon I can ID a couple of those blokes from the other night too.
could be involved, Charge.
CHARGE: Yeah.
What chance does Leigh have in a place like this? (ENGINE STARTS) Not much we can do now.
Don't know about that, Charge.
What are you doing? (KEYS JINGLE) What does it look like? (STARTS ENGINE) (SIGHS) Stealing a car.
Continuing the pursuit of a suspected drug dealer, Charge.
Stop here.
What? But he went that way.
I saw.
go and check it out.
Nope.
We don't know what we're walking into.
He's armed.
We're not.
What if he's not alone? Yeah, I don't like those odds either.
So, what do we do? You followed him? Yes, sir.
On whose authority? Ah! In a It was a judgment call, sir.
For which you are notorious, You're sure these men were involved in the black flight? Without a doubt, sir.
Sir, we have no real authority or jurisdiction here.
Ordinary citizens can act when they know a crime is being committed, can't they, Swain? Theoretically.
Right now, we don't even know if a crime is being committed.
We know a substantial number of the people in this town are involved in a drug distribution network, including the police officer.
Charge, this is your theory.
We have no hard and fast proof.
X, with respect, we all saw what drugs did to that kid.
That wasn't a theory.
That was pretty hard and fast.
Alright.
Charge, calm down.
CHARGE: Sorry, sir.
But as a parent, I can't.
Every minute we waste gives them time to get away, if they haven't already.
I agree something suspicious is going on.
How do we get to this processing plant? MIKE: Isn't exactly a hive of activity for a thriving fishing town.
CHARGE: He's the ringleader for sure.
(ENGINE REVS) Let's take a closer look.
(MAN GROANS) Swain! Hey.
Hey! SWAIN: Hey, take it easy.
WILD: What the hell? Someone jumped me.
Probably your druggie mate.
What? Mal Scarpia? He's no mate of mine.
You want to tell us what you're doing here? Sorry.
Police business.
Cods it is! Scarpia decked you.
What happened? You have a little falling-out? Is that what you think? I reckon that's what happened.
I just told you, Scarpia isn't my mate.
Yeah, you can say what you like, mate.
I saw you talking to him in town.
Charge.
I was investigating his son's OD and questioning the locals.
I told you, I'm new in town.
Did you hear anything to contradict that, Charge? (SCOFFS) MIKE: 2Dads? Um No, sir.
We weren't close enough to hear anything.
WILD: Hey, look, it doesn't matter anyway.
For what it's worth, I reckon you're right about the drugs.
Where's Scarpia now? He left.
What's your plan? Get in my car and piss off out of here.
You can't just let him get away with it! Hey, I'll put in a report, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
You're gonna just get in your car and drive away? I've learnt not to pick fights I can't win.
Give us my gun, Lurch.
I'm out of here.
Well, what do we do now? We sail with the tide.
What? But, sir, he's Charge, it's a police matter now.
End of story.
Uh, sir, we have a radar contact, bearing at 0-2-9, range eight miles, crossing our waters.
RO? According to the transponder signal, she's an Australian trawler, the 'Milly Rose'.
MIKE: Wish them fair seas, RO.
Sir, 'Milly Rose' is registered to a one Malcolm Scarpia.
Out of Winston.
Hands to boarding stations, hands to boarding stations, hands to boarding stations.
XO: Stop your engines.
Australian Navy.
We intend to board you in accordance with the Australian Customs Act.
Repeat, stop your engines.
We intend to board you.
What's the problem? We're just fishermen.
Are you the master of this vessel, sir? Yes, I am.
Mal Scarpia.
Hey! Stay back.
Take a look around.
Like I said, we're just fishermen.
Pig's arse! All you'll find is fish and ice.
Dutchy.
I know you.
Yeah, I'm a friend of your son's.
X.
We've found something.
X.
MAL: Hey.
Hey, hey.
You got no right to do this.
Take a look.
Ho! You're busted.
X.
NAVCOM have instructed us to steam 'Milly Rose' back to Winston asap and lock it down.
With the drugs on board? Yes.
The Feds are on their way, should be here in a few hours.
This low tide prevents us from following, so we'll keep the crew in Austere, hand them over when we get back home.
Charge! You can lead the steaming party.
Sir.
Select someone to go with you.
Once you've made the handover, radio us, we'll send a RHIB to pick you up.
Aye, sir.
RYAN: Charge! Can we come with you on the steaming party? Why? Does there have to be a reason? Yes! Leigh's in a pretty fragile emotional state right now.
When he finds his dad's been busted, we think he might need some friends.
OK.
Mal Scarpia says he wants a word, boss.
You have no idea the people you're dealing with.
Is that right? Not us.
We're just fishermen trying to make a living.
You're drug runners, Mr Scarpia.
Out of necessity.
Fish stock collapsed.
We needed to find an alternative source of income to keep the town alive.
You ever heard of tourism? They came to us! All we had to do was to rendezvous with a boat in international waters and bring the shipment ashore.
I never realised that The junkies in Sydney and Melbourne, who gives a rat's? Now is You think differently? After Leigh's overdose? Yeah.
I told Buckland that Who? Carl Buckland.
He's the boss.
I told him this would be the last shipment.
How'd he take that? Let's just say he didn't accept my resignations.
If we don't make this delivery, they're going to think we stiffed them.
They'll come looking for us.
There'll be blood on the streets.
The Federal Police will meet them.
Then they'd better hurry.
Buckland thinks you've left, so he's making a daylight pick-up.
They're on their way.
There's been a complication.
The Feds' plane's been weathered in.
Looks unlikely they'll be here in time to intercept Buckland.
Do we know anything about this guy? Career crim.
He's done time for drugs and assault.
Suspected of a lot more than they've been able to pin on him.
Model citizen, huh? The Feds have officially asked for Defence aid to the civil community.
Which means We get to kick arse.
We'll be waiting to intercept the plane.
When it lands, we'll take custody of the occupants, hopefully without firing a shot.
So where'd this plane last land? Right here, Dutchy.
The prawn farm.
They've got a strip right there.
Plane landed that way, sir.
Sir.
Hey.
We got company.
Hey.
Hey.
What are you guys doing on my dad's boat? We caught him with the drugs, Leigh.
Is he here? RYAN: No, he's under arrest on 'Hammersley' with his crew.
Federal Police are gonna be here in a few hours.
I'm sorry, mate.
BIRD: Leigh, you're a victim in this.
You've done nothing wrong.
Could I come aboard and talk? Sure.
You go.
They're late.
I hate an unpunctual crook.
She said, "He's on this boat.
" How is he? A mess.
CHARGE: Well, you gave it your best shot.
Who are those guys? I don't think we're gonna hang around and find out.
Prepare to cast off.
'Hammersley', this is the 'Milly Rose'.
Look, we've got some visitors who don't seem too friendly.
So we're gonna go for a little harbour cruise, stay out of their way.
Request backup.
Over.
Put that down and step away from the wheel! RO: Roger that, 'Milly Rose'.
We'll inform the CO.
Over.
Son, what the I said step away! Leigh, don't be stupid.
Keep back or I'll shoot! I mean it! (COCKS GUN) Buckland! It's over.
Now, you boys put your guns on the ground, hands in the air.
Whatever you say, Officer.
(GUNFIRE) Leave him.
He's dead.
Forget about Smithy.
Don't! Keep back or I will shoot! I mean it! Mr Buckland.
I'm Leigh Scarpia.
I'm the one who called you.
Why don't you give me that, son? Where's my merchandise? Below.
What the hell are you doing? Getting out of here.
Don't be an idiot.
(COUGHS) You're the idiot, not me.
(WHEEZES) We don't have much time.
Navy are at the airstrip.
I know.
That's why we landed around the headland.
Nice idea, kid.
All there? Well, let's go.
You drive.
Roger that, X.
They're at the wharf.
Let's move.
Righto, at the double.
Sir, Charge and Ryan? We've lost contact.
We have to assume that Buckland has the boat.
BUCKLAND: If he moves, shoot him.
Can't this thing go any bloody faster? It's a fishing trawler.
It's not built for speed.
Dammit! They'll be on top of us in a minute! Sir, they've got Charge at gunpoint, portside upper deck.
LEE: What are we gonna do? We need hostages.
And we need a diversion to slow them down! Put a bullet in him and throw him overboard.
(FIRES REPEATEDLY) DUTCHY: No, nothing.
(COUGHS) Sir, Charge is in the water! 'Thunder', you pick up Charge.
We'll maintain pursuit.
Over.
MAN ON RADIO: Roger that.
Sir! What the hell? Tear gas now! Roger! Tear gas firing! BUCKLAND: Move! Get out! Get out! Move! Righto.
Let's go.
Take us in.
(COUGHING) (SPITS) Sir, armed hostile, starboard side.
(FIRES REPEATEDLY) MIKE: 2Dads, return fire.
(MACHINE-GUN FIRE) MIKE: 'Thunder'.
Armed hostile portside.
(GUNFIRE) (GROANS) MIKE: Dutchy, upper deck.
Swain, take the lower.
(COUGHS) (COCKS GUN) Clear! (COUGHING) BIRD: Ah! Help! BUCKLAND: Come on! Keep moving! Sir, portside wheelhouse.
MIKE: Copy that.
Help! (COUGHS) Drop the weapon! Drop the weapon! Drop it or I swear I will! Knees - now! Hands behind your back.
(COUGHS) Swain! It's OK.
Charge, it's Swain, I need your help! He's having a heart attack! MIKE: Ryan.
You OK? Sir? You never really know anyone, do you? Not really.
Don't be too hard on yourself.
You only met him a few days ago.
Still, I thought we were friends.
And he ends up spitting in my face.
Oh, what do they say? Apple never falls far from the tree.
Yeah.
And with a dad like that, it's no wonder he's screwed.
I'd better get back to work.
Sir.
Sir, prisoners are in custody with the Feds.
Thanks, Dutchy.
Any news? Oh, Swain's talking with his doctor now.
But haven't heard anything.
He's on his way up.
Good.
He's dead, isn't he? No.
No, no, he's not dead.
And, in fact, they don't think he had a heart attack.
What, you mean he was faking? Carry on, Swain.
OK, they did an ECG and ran some cardiac enzymes.
There's no evidence of a heart attack.
But an X-ray has shown some inflammation around the heart which is consistent with a viral infection.
Now, did anyone notice any symptoms? No.
Um He did have some chest pain for a few days.
Oh, 2Dads.
I told him to see Swain, sir, but he wouldn't.
He he he he was scared he'd have to leave the boat.
SWAIN: They're gonna run some more tests, but if it is an infection, which it looks like it is, it's treatable, so he should make a full recovery.
MIKE: Excellent.
SWAIN: Don't worry, 2Dads.
He'll be fine.
