Mother, I'm sorry,
but you are out of line, here.
Darla
I heard you.
You didn't like my surprise gift.
And I'm sorry.
But I will not apologize for
wanting the best for my grandson.
Your grandson is my son.
You have no idea what is best for him.
What's best for him
is a world class education
befitting his heightened
intellectual ability.
That's what's best for him.
The sidwell friends school is
one of the best in the nation.
Maybe the world.
It's almost impossible to gain entry.
And not only did I secure
an application,
but then the admission.
And then
A full ride, sweetie.
A full ride.
I mean, how did you even get
all that done so fast?
We're in the middle
of a racial reckoning.
And that school is like
every institution and company,
posting "black live matter"
on their Twitter handle.
I called them on it.
I have two friends on the board,
and I presented them with a gifted boy
who lives in a rural environment,
without a properly rigorous school
anywhere for 50 miles.
They looked at his records,
his testing,
- and some video
- [SIGHS]
I had of him just being himself.
That, along with
his legacy ties to the school
through your father,
and all of the philanthropy that
we have done over the years,
made it a no-brainer.
So, basically,
he's gifted, he's black,
and they need that.
I don't want that life for him.
Darla, don't be dramatic.
What are you even talking about?
The pressure, the tokenism,
the lack of true connection
I know that life, I remember it.
Are you really going to deny Blue
this extraordinary opportunity, Darla?
[SIGHS]
look, I need to think.
I'll call you back later.
Fine.
Goodbye.
[SIGHS]
Well, I assume they could.
I mean [CHUCKLES]
They had enough practice.
Really, the ring is just a formality
when you've known
the person for so long.
I think you're right.
I was talking to him the other day
and asked him how married life was.
And what he said was really beautiful.
What did he say?
That it was everything
he hoped it would be.
Now, ain't that beautiful?
[CHUCKLES] it is.
Them kids
They deserve their happiness.
They've been through it.
It has been hard-fought.
- Indeed.
- And you?
You and your man talking
about getting hitched yet?
You've been booed up there,
together, all these months.
It's been discussed.
Kinda.
Kinda? What that mean?
It means "kinda".
That sounds like you need
to get ready for a proposal.
[SIGHS] no.
I don't think we're there yet.
He's talking about it.
He's ready.
How's Hollywood hanging in?

- hey, Darla.
- Miss Violet.
- What's wrong?

- What's going on, baby?
She went behind my back and
got Blue into a do private school.
His IQ results, his tests scores,
and the fact that he's black
are all things they needed and
wanted right now, and so he got in.
Well, what are you saying?
You saying
you thinking about letting him go?
No, no, no, no, no.
I would never [INHALES]
I would never put him
in a place like that, but I
I'm just so angry. I'm

[SIGHS] I just
I think Ralph Angel
is actually considering this.
[LAUGHS] baby, Ralph Angel loves
that boy to the moon and back.
He is not about to let him go
nowhere out of his sight.
[DARLA OVER PHONE] I know. But I
think he's really thinking about it.
As something that might
be good for Blue.
Well, what's best for Blue is
for Blue to be with his family.
You know that. Ralph Angel knows that.
He's just thinking, that's all.
He always wants to think
things through, that's good.
But this ain't even
in the realm of possibility.
I'll talk to him.
And I'll talk to your mother.
It'll be fine. Okay?
Okay. Thank you, Vi.

[DARLENE OVER PHONE] hello!
What is this nonsense about you
trying to take my Blue from his family?
And hello to you too, Violet.
I'm not trying to take Blue away.
I'm just trying to give him
what he deserves.
Which is a first class education.
Besides, it's a flow of
conversation. We just started talking.
Well, stop talking.
It's an unnecessary conversation
and you're just getting these
kids all riled up for nothing.
Now you have proved your point.
Boy is smart as a whip.
And they need to get some stronger
education options for him here.
Agreed.
But Blue is not moving anywhere.
Especially to DC.
You're his grandmother,
but we are his world.
With all due respect,

Who am I?
I'm the woman who practically
raised him when you didn't.
Or couldn't. Or wouldn't. You pick.
I sent money.
Yes, and thank you for that.
And I gave time.
You can make more money,
you can't make more time.
You did assist in the raising of Blue.
And I'm appreciative.
But you didn't give birth
to him. My daughter did.
And she will be the
ultimate say in this matter.
Your daughter who confided in me?
Asked me for my help, that daughter?
Blue is not going to DC.
Not while I'm living,
and maybe even not when I'm dead.
