[STATIC.]
MORGAN: Well, it was different.
I, uh, was on the run, Al.
AL: From what? - What were you on the run - People.
It was people.
See, somebody helped me.
That's what this is all about.
[WALKER GROWLING.]
And the thing I did was cleanup.
Cleanup? You know, like, killing them.
It was what I decided I could do.
That was my job, what I was good at.
I took a step back.
And figured out what I needed to keep going, to keep helping.
DANIEL: You were there, Al.
You saw me.
That's the place where I was gonna spend the rest of my days, alone, with that cat.
This is better, much better.
It's like, every morning, I just count up my regrets and hang them over the shoulders and start the day.
What do you do with the time that you have left? That's the question.
STRAND: The universe has tested us in no uncertain terms.
There's a utility to that.
One becomes formed into something else.
A survivor.
There's power in that.
DORIE: Money.
It doesn't mean anything now.
[SCOFFS.]
I think about those people sitting on piles of it I don't know.
Eating caviar out of ladles, something.
They could've done something for the world.
But they missed their chance.
Us? This group? We're lousy with skills.
That's what being rich today is.
And we sure as hell gonna spread the wealth.
I had some caviar once.
I didn't I thought it tasted like bait.
I get that people don't trust us.
I didn't trust her when she reached out.
Now I'm reaching out.
Things change.
And if we can make that spread [EXHALES DEEPLY.]
that's everything.
[SIGHS.]
I got a chance here to do exactly what I need to do, so I'm taking it.
Every time we saw each other as people and helped each other, things got better.
We're good at this.
It's like everything else was training for this.
MORGAN: When we got that plane back in the air, when we landed it, when we did the impossible some people noticed.
At least a few.
But that's all we needed.
MALE SURVIVOR: Was that your plane? ELDERLY SURVIVOR: I heard your message.
Found one of those boxes.
FEMALE SURVIVOR: Can you really help me? We haven't stopped since.
AL: So you're helping people.
What about the other thing? The other thing? What's the What's the other thing? You said it was time we all started living.
Yeah.
Well, that that is, uh, something we're still working on.
Why is that? Because, um I guess sometimes it's easier to see what other people need help with.
[WALKER GROWLING.]
- Got it? - Mm-hmm.
[KNIFE PLUNGES.]
You okay? Yeah, I'm good.
Let's get back to it.
Fear the Walking Dead 5x09 Channel 4 After what happened, I wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one doing this, so [LAUGHING.]
Sorry.
I'm I'm not used to being on this side of the camera.
It's been a while a long while.
Like back when there was a bar to go to at the end of the day.
[CHUCKLES.]
Um [CLEARS THROAT.]
We raided a Big Stop, we took every camera battery and tape we could find.
I know how important this story is.
And I couldn't be everywhere at once.
MORGAN: After we made contact with a few people, we knew that there were more out there.
So we picked up more trucks so we could cover more ground.
This is C&L One.
Anything going on out there this morning? STRAND: All quiet on the southwestern front.
SARAH: We're en route to tank town, Mo-Mo.
Hit you if we get any pings.
Got it.
[LIQUID SPLASHES.]
This here is how we keep the convoy humming.
Polar Bear's dudes hooked us up with it when we got to the oil fields.
We go fill her up every couple weeks or so.
Logan was right about one thing.
Gas is starting to go kaput.
It was hard enough trying to get places.
DANIEL: We drive the MRAP behind the tanker to keep it safe.
Right, Skidmark? There's still people out there who want to get it.
And we'd like to think our presence discourages them.
See Logan thought we were stupid.
He thought we'd fall for that good Samaritan schtick a second time, but he just wanted the gas for himself.
And the dick squad.
But we got him good.
Hey! Hey! What are you doing?! Where you going?! Stop! Karma's a bitch, Logie.
[CHUCKLES.]
I mean, technically, what we did to him is not different than what we did to Clayton, but this felt good.
[CHUCKLES.]
It did.
DWIGHT: I got lucky.
Fell in with the, uh, right folks this time.
Now I'm basically doing the polar opposite of what I used to do, and if I keep doing that for the rest of my life, well, uh it won't make up for everything that I did, but I'll know I did some good.
And being on the road, you know, I can find her.
Maybe.
He won't let me give him a haircut.
Doesn't matter what I look like.
SARAH: It does.
Daniel.
Look at me, man.
It wouldn't take much to make you look very presentable.
Let's move on out.
ALICIA: I'm in the Sprinter with Strand and Luciana, which means we're the lead vehicle when we go out.
It used to be because I was, like, the first line of defense, but now I'm helping map out which roads are still clear.
I think the change is good.
It's what I needed.
[WALKERS GROWLING.]
AL: Tell me about Alicia.
STRAND: She's my friend.
I wasn't with her when she needed me, but I'm with her now, and I'm doing what she can't.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
JUNE: Grace and I, you could say we're in charge of the caravan.
We left the river mill 'cause everyone we found who's needed our help was so far apart, it just didn't make sense to operate out of one place.
We try to keep everyone comfortable when we're taking them back and forth between the outposts we set up along the road.
Rice noodles.
Oil.
Garlic powder.
We're running low on powdered eggs.
KID: Growlers! [PEOPLE SHOUT.]
[WALKERS GROWLING.]
Everyone in the truck! [WALKERS GROWLING.]
We'll find a place to call home.
Eventually.
But it's got to be the right place.
AL: When's the wedding? [CHUCKLES.]
[LAUGHS.]
I think we've got more important things to do.
As far as I'm concerned, we're already married.
She has my word, and she has my heart.
That's all that matters in this world.
AL: Sorry.
What was that you were doing? Earlier, you had your fingers around your neck like you were [SIGHS.]
Like you were checking your lymph nodes.
I wake up every morning, wondering if today will be the day I start to feel sick.
Used to stop me from doing a lot of things.
But now I'm trying to do as much as I can while I can.
What are you listening to? Oh, um It's an audiobook.
I listen to it at double speed when we're on the road.
It's good.
[ENGINE REVS.]
MORGAN: Back when we were on that plane, I never pictured this.
Us coming this far.
But I do feel good.
About what we're doing.
Seeing what it's doing for everybody.
AL: What about you? What do you think it's done for you? Now, if you'd asked me that before we met Tess, I might not have had an answer for you.
But you do now? LUCIANA: Morgan, do you copy? We could use some help.
Luciana? Yeah, we copy.
Just tell us where we're going.
She was trying to reach her husband on the walkie.
What's her name? It's Tess.
TESS: He hasn't come back.
I-I don't know why it's taking so long.
Why don't you come out and talk to us? I can't.
I just I don't know where they are.
Ben rigged the field.
"They"? You don't know where what are? [WALKER GROWLING.]
[EXPLOSION.]
Landmines.
It was landmines.
DORIE: Look out.
[ROCKS, DIRT CLATTER.]
How many more mines you got buried out there? I don't know.
He wanted to make sure no one could get close.
That's gonna bring a lot more.
We got to fix that fence.
But they's a roadblock up on the cloverleaf And them bears was wall-to-wall Yeah, them smokies is thick as bugs on a bumper They even had a bear in the air I says, "Callin' all trucks, this here's the Duck We's about to go a-huntin' bear" Come on and join our convoy - Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way - Unh-unh.
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy 'Cross the U-S-A Ooh, convoy Yeah! Sarah and Wendell really like their trucker music.
It's, um It's all they listen to.
This is not music.
Oh, that ain't just music.
That's our anthem.
That's how we stay in touch when I'm out on the road and Wendell's back watching the kids at tank town.
Chuckles, tank town is a "need to know" kinda spot, and nobody else needs to know, you know? Cut the cam.
They should've shut Logan's mouth as soon as he opened it.
No more words.
He'd proven the worth of his words.
TESS: Can you keep them from coming? Yeah, we're trying.
If they get too close to the house, there are Ben, he he put them everywhere.
Gotta keep them away from that fence.
Yeah.
Tess? Tess, talk to me.
TESS: I I don't know what to say.
Where did your husband go? He went to the drug store to find an inhaler.
My son, he has asthma.
But he's all right? His breathing, it's okay? Yes.
No.
Yes, yes.
All right.
Look, we're gonna send some people to look for him.
In the meantime, why don't you come out? Come out and see what we look like.
TESS: Are those cameras? Yeah, maybe we should turn them off for now.
No, it's important.
Yes.
We are, uh We're recording so that we can show people what we're about.
Not a lot of people saw what we did.
With the plane.
Figure this is the best way to get the message out.
Still figuring out a way to actually get people to watch it.
So they know we're not full of crap.
TESS: No, I can't leave.
All right.
June, Alicia, we need your help - with a run for our new friend here - MORGAN: Tess? and a ammo re-up for me, pronto.
Come on, Tess.
Tell me why you can't leave.
TESS: I I haven't left the house since everything went bad.
We have supplies, a septic system, and we even have a garden inside.
Would've been helpful if he'd made a map of where those things are.
You know, it took me a long time to leave the first place I was holed up in.
AL: Why is that? Just did.
TESS: You all don't need to put yourselves out.
Ben will be back soon.
MORGAN: I'm sure he will.
But we're gonna stay here all the same.
Make sure your boy gets what he needs.
[WALKER GROWLING.]
[GUNSHOT.]
DORIE: Told you we were gonna draw a crowd.
AL: You think they're gonna find him? Uh We got on a plane, crashed it, rebuilt it.
Somehow, finding someone's husband out here seems like it's harder.
- [GUNSHOT.]
- You found June.
Maybe we ought to save the questions till we're free and clear.
I guess this day hit us all pretty close to home, each in our own particular way.
There's no inhaler, Morgan.
He must've already been here.
He walked here to get it.
Which means he walked home.
Tess needed to leave that house, and she couldn't.
That's what can happen when you settle in one place too long.
Things go bad.
We decided to split up.
Thought we could cover more ground that way.
JUNE: Nothing this way.
You guys seeing anything? STRAND: Nada.
Alicia? My mom used to look for the little bit of good every time she went out into the world.
She would've liked this.
[WALKER GROWLING.]
I haven't killed since after the plane.
Just seeing that tree, I I just I didn't want to go back there.
- [WALKER GROWLING.]
- [GUNSHOT.]
John.
DORIE: All right.
I'll cover you.
Okay.
[GUN COCKS.]
[WALKERS GROWLING.]
I knew this was loaded for Morgan.
That woman and her son, and what he lost? AL: Does he talk about it? No.
When I was a cop, you'd go whole shifts without saying more to your partner than, "Good morning" and "Who's driving?" Still, you knew what made 'em tick.
He got my back, I got his.
You couldn't ask for a better partner on a run.
You're not gonna show this to June, are you? John's not a big talker.
At least not always.
Neither am I.
At least not always.
[BOARDS CLATTERING.]
- [WALKERS GROWLING.]
- You want to put that down for a minute? AL: I've rolled during worse.
[WALKERS GROWLING.]
- [CRASHING.]
- Back up, back up! [EXPLOSION.]
[ROCKS CLATTERING.]
Tell me about the minefield.
Well I've called a lot of things ugly mustard, but this was by far the ugliest mustard I've ever seen.
- [LAUGHS.]
- What? Where did that phrase come from? Uh, it's something my grandpa used to say.
He worked in a delicatessen.
If you hesitate, you don't get the story.
It was intense.
Yeah.
[WALKERS GROWLING.]
We got to hit 'em before they [EXPLOSION.]
[GRUNTING.]
[EXPLOSION.]
[ROCKS CLATTERING.]
- [WALKER GROWLING.]
- You okay? [EXPLOSION.]
Trust me, words cannot describe it.
AL: [GRUNTS.]
[CAR DOOR SHUTS.]
[WALKER GROWLING.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
[WALKER GROWLING.]
[EXPLOSION.]
You two all right in there? TESS: Yeah.
Yeah.
Guys, where are we with the inhaler? The tree wasn't the only remarkable thing we found out in those woods.
That walker that came at Alicia wasn't just any walker.
It was him.
It was Tess's husband.
[GUN COCKS.]
[GUNSHOT.]
- LUCIANA: That's all we have.
- Right.
Morgan [EXPLOSION.]
BOY: Mommy? Mommy! We don't know how close those mines are to the house.
It could hurt the people inside, the boy.
AL: Morgan.
Morgan! It was loaded for me.
I knew it from the moment I first talked to her.
AL: Because of what happened to your wife and son? Yes.
AL: Morgan, stay in the craters! [EXPLOSION.]
[WALKER GROWLING.]
Don't move! - We're clear! - Don't move! Your left foot.
Shit.
DORIE: Morgan?! MORGAN: John.
Don't come any closer.
Yeah, we're not gonna listen to you on that one.
I don't want anybody else to get hurt.
DORIE: Well, neither do we.
Looks like this could take a while, though.
Might as well have some company.
- [CHUCKLES.]
- DORIE: Huh? [BRAKES SQUEALING.]
AL: Whoa, whoa, whoa! DORIE: Easy.
Easy.
We have the inhaler.
Just take it easy.
We don't know how many more of these things there are around.
TESS: What's going on out there? Tess, we found the inhaler.
But we're gonna need you to come out here and get it.
TESS: No.
No, Ben he'll be back.
He can get it.
He can help you, too.
I didn't want to tell you like this.
Ben's not coming back, Tess.
No.
No, he will.
We found him.
He had the medicine that your boy needed.
He got what you needed.
Can you come out here? [VOICE BREAKING.]
No.
Whoever you found, it wasn't him.
He's coming back.
She just couldn't bring herself to say goodbye.
I get it.
It's hard.
AL: Morgan [SNIFFLES, SIGHS.]
Morgan, I MORGAN: She's not coming out, so we're doing this now.
Got to get that inhaler inside.
AL: I'm putting the camera down.
No.
They need to see this.
So, you dealt with one of these before, Al.
Did an imbed in an EOD unit overseas.
That you're not already a goner might mean it's a dud.
Or it's a pressure-release device.
- We can't know.
- Okay.
You should get back.
No.
We can do this.
I'll talk you through it.
First, you just need to dig out around it - so we can see what we're up against.
- Dig out? Yeah, gently.
DORIE: Morgan.
A smaller blade that'd be more precise.
Thank you.
- Could you ? - Yeah.
Got it.
Thank you.
AL: Okay.
Here.
Which one? - AL: Uh, this one.
- Here? Should access the fuse, yeah.
Wait.
Wait.
That That could trigger the firing pin.
Uh, yeah.
It's It's this one.
How sure are you about this? Fifty-fifty.
Fift Okay.
Okay.
I had something planned for tonight.
Something I think we all need.
DORIE: No, don't go making any final pronouncements.
I'm not, John, I'm not.
I'm just saying we're still gonna do it, all right? Okay.
So, on three.
One two TESS: Wait.
What are you doing? Pulling the firing pin.
That won't work.
I saw Ben do this a hundred times before.
[DOOR OPENS.]
No, stay back.
TESS: I can help.
I want to help.
I know he's not coming back.
He used these.
Thank you.
Right, as soon as the holes line up, you're gonna slide the pin in.
Just lift your foot very, very slowly to release the pressure.
Okay.
I think that's in.
- Think it'll hold? - I don't know.
Think you should back up.
Think everybody should back up.
DORIE: Careful.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
Come on.
Oh.
Move.
Let's go.
She hadn't stepped outside the house in two years.
But she did today.
To help Morgan.
All because we were there to help her.
- Oh, my God.
- Morgan.
AL: How do you feel? How do I feel - [EXPLOSION.]
- Whoa! [DOOR OPENS.]
I didn't think she would come out.
AL: Why not? [SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY.]
MORGAN: You can hear that somebody's gone.
You can see it for yourself.
And even then, you still can't believe it.
Sometimes it Sometimes you just can't say goodbye.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
MORGAN: We've been wanting to do it for a while.
Finally, we could.
AL: Psst.
Grace.
Tell me about the Pad Thai.
[CHUCKLES.]
I had this recipe on my fridge for years, and this is what it took for me to finally make it.
[LAUGHS.]
I managed to find all the ingredients in some form or another.
Worcestershire as fish sauce, and ketchup packets are damn versatile.
It's just missing the peanuts.
TESS: He didn't think that everyone was bad.
He just thought that we should stay put.
Try to survive where we were.
That help would come someday.
He was right.
Thank you.
There's a proud tradition of eating noodles around a campfire with this group.
Come on.
You want to get some practice in tomorrow? It's been a while.
Actually, I'm kind of working on something of my own.
Okay.
Hey.
I want to know who's painting those trees.
I want to find them.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
[TRUCK APPROACHING.]
[AIR BRAKES HISSING.]
[LAUGHTER, INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
Missing spice or you want spice? WOMAN: [LAUGHS.]
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
[LAUGHS.]
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
[LAUGHTER.]
MORGAN: You never know where help is gonna come from.
But we all need it at one time or another.
AL: Talking about Tess? Talking about you? You said you didn't think you could answer my question before you met Tess.
What did you mean by that? I knew I needed help with something.
And I didn't know what it was.
And now you do? It's been a long time since I lost them.
I still haven't said goodbye.
I think I need to, Al.
But I just don't know how.
I don't.
I need help.
Help finding my own way to make things better.
I need to figure out how to make this world a little more like the one we used to have.
[SIGHS.]
I need to find a place for all of us that won't be like the other places I've been.
AL: So, what now? I've got a lot more things I want to do.
Making the most of my second chance.
Being the man that my daughter would've been proud to call her dad.
Ending each day knowing I've tried to make someone else's life better.
Doing right by the people who took a chance on me.
Keepin' that rig chugging for the poet of the pavement.
LUCIANA: What about you, Al? What do you need help with? Making sure these stories aren't just interviews on tape.
[LAUGHTER.]
AL: I started filming our stories so we would have it.
It became about so much more.
We are out here helping, but this is bigger than any of us.
And we can't do it on our own.
That's why we made this tape.
That's why you're watching it now.
We need you.
However you can with whomever you can.
Because that's how this lasts.
When everyone starts helping that's how we start helping everyone.
So if you're watching this, um, pick up a walkie, leave somebody some food, do something, do anything.
Help yourself.
Help them.
Help us.
Help everyone.
[BUTTON CLICKS.]
[STATIC.]
[CLICKS, WALKIE-TALKIE BEEPS.]
[DOORKNOB RATTLES.]
[MOTOR WHIRRING.]
[DOOR BELL JINGLES.]
[CARS APPROACHING.]
[SCOFFS.]
Shit.
WES: Look, I don't want any trouble.
LOGAN: Yeah.
Neither did I.
There's something you need to see.
That's what happens to your shoes when you walk 200 miles.
Imagine what happens to your feet.
The dead walk.
We weren't meant to.
Least I'm not.
Spent a lot of time clearing these roads with Clayton.
So did my crew.
And now we can't even make use of our own handiwork 'cause you took our gas.
Doris.
Hey.
Hey! I wouldn't do that if I were you! [SIGHS.]
Why don't you just tell us where the oil fields are, and [SIGHS.]
we can forget all this horseshit? I don't know what kind of horseshit you're talking about.
I'm ignorant of said horseshit.
You're not with them? With who? The people on that tape? No.
I'm not "with them".
More horseshit.
Different kind.
You steal that from them? I like you.
Make sure he can't follow us.
[GUN COCKS.]
Whoa.
- [GUNSHOT.]
- [AIR HISSING.]
Aww.
- [GUNSHOT.]
- [AIR HISSING.]
You got the front tire.
It's not like [GUNS COCK.]
[GUNFIRE.]
Come on.
God.
[GROANS.]
Unless you want to join the marching band over there [WALKERS GROWLING.]
you might want to get out of here.
[WALKERS GROWLING.]
How? Call them.
And when they pick you up tell them they're making more enemies than friends out here.
And we got more bullets than we know what to do with.
[GUNSHOT.]
[CHUCKLES.]
[WALKERS GROWLING.]
[ENGINES START.]
[STATIC.]
MORGAN: Well, it was different.
I, uh, was on the run, Al.
