It's the biggest talent search in the world.
To find the greatest new act in America, we went to more cities And saw more talent Than ever before.
Tonight the competition reaches a whole new phase in the entertainment capital of the world--las Vegas.
Who will make it through to the live studio shows in Hollywood? Holy crap.
And whose dream will end right here? Kind of crumbled under the pressure.
It was really intense.
There's over 100 acts.
But only 48 will be finalists.
The judges are on a mission.
America needs to see something like this.
I do not agree on him.
Don't be ridiculous.
And only the best will survive.
Could be disqualified.
Could have had a really big accident.
Let the competition begin.
This was one of our toughest decisions.
It breaks my heart to have to do this.
Oh, God.
Welcome to America's got talent at the palms casino resort.
This is Vegas week.
Over 100 acts from across the nation have arrived.
Everyone's here to compete for one of the 48 spots in the live studio show, and ultimately $1 million and a headline show right here in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas.
I just want that one chance in front of America.
While some acts settle in Others experience what Vegas has to offer.
To do a show here in Las Vegas, And I'm gonna bounce off the wall pretty soon.
This is what we love to do, so we got to fight for it.
Being here, just It feels like one step closer to something coming true.
I feel the energy of the city.
It's fantastic, and I love it.
I want this.
I want this really bad.
Before the judges arrive, all the acts have the opportunity to look at the city they could one day be headlining in.
We're in Vegas, baby! I love Las Vegas because it's a city of lights and dreams and passions.
Look at this gigantic volcano.
This is gonna be like my career in a year.
It's gonna explode and it's gonna be hot magma.
I saw my very first magician here in Las Vegas.
And now I'm here.
It's still completely surreal.
I'm just imagining us headlining, and our names and our pictures on the buildings.
All the acts desperately want to make it to Hollywood, but heading to Vegas are the three people that stand in their way- the judges.
We put through over 100 acts.
There are 48 spots.
Today is about sorting out the acts that we really want to see again.
It's a really, really hard day.
Prioritize.
Here we go.
Just the kind of dance that we're after.
You see, I don't think it's different.
How can you say that's different? All those steps you've seen before.
See, I think this guy had a great personality.
I couldn't disagree more.
I die for these two.
Talented.
Adorable.
My only question with him is, is he old enough to be a star? I thought she was amazing.
I think she should go straight through.
- No, I don't.

I think it's entertaining.

And the great thing about Vegas is they get found out if they are a one-trick pony.

on day one, and all the acts have been summoned to the performance theater.
Everyone, you can just start walking over now.
Now in the past, acts have been eliminated right away, so the mood is definitely intense.
Welcome to Las Vegas.
Every one of you deserves to be here.
But we have looked at your original audition tapes, and we have to begin to be ruthless.
We have to choose the people that are worthy of going on to Hollywood and becoming our top 48.
We have separated you into three separate groups-- a, b, and c.
We chose these groups based on who we felt had a better chance to move on to Hollywood for our live shows and be part of that top 48.
So let me start with group a right here in the center.
Every one of you is going to perform today because we believe that group a has the best chance of moving on to Hollywood.
You are the judges' favorites.
Congratulations.
Group b.
I'm sorry, but I really don't have good news for you.
After reviewing all the tapes, we felt that your acts weren't as good as group a's.
Therefore, after we review all the acts in group a, if there are places left, you can perform then.
There may be two places left.
There may be ten places left.
It depends on how well or how badly group a performs.
Until then, I'm sorry.
All you can do is wait.
Group c, you were in many ways the most difficult category.
We looked at every audition incredibly closely.
And, as a result, we decided Welcome back to America's got talent at the palms casino resort.
Earlier, the judges divided the acts into three groups.
The judges' favorites will perform for a place in the top 48 today, and the standbys will perform tomorrow for any places leftover.
Now it's decision time for our final group.
Afraid your journey here ends today.
We decided, in your case, that you were so good, you're going straight to Hollywood.

The ten acts going straight through to the live shows are From the Chicago auditions, the belly-dancing duo We're going to Hollywood! Polina, and strikers all stars.

So ten talented acts get a free pass to Hollywood.
But for the remaining acts, this is where the competition really begins.
For the standbys, it's a day of watching and waiting.
But for the judges' favorites, it's a chance to compete for the 38 remaining spots in the live studio shows.
Time to take the gloves off, come out swinging.

Every act has been put into a category, so that judges can compare like with like.
These acts will rehearse together, be called to the stage together, and from the wings watch each other perform.
Well, it's just very intimidating, you know, to look at a board and see all those names and people you're gonna be up against.
Yeah, it's very scary.
So the judges are ready, and now it's time for the performances to begin.
First up are the magicians, and already they're sizing up the competition.
I think I can definitely beat the other magicians in a heartbeat.
But with a lot of work.
And I think my biggest competition here is Michael grasso.
I'm nervous.
I've seen my competition in the magic category.
I know they're doing big illusions, but what I'm doing is I'm bringing magic back to its purest form- sleight of hand.
These guys are serious here, man.
The guy with those hands, are you kidding me or what? I couldn't do that.
It's not funny, though.
I've met all my competition.
They're absolutely amazing.
And just to be included, you know, in that pool of people, is a tremendous honor.
And, you know, I'm definitely gonna have to step it up to try and maintain in the competition.
The judges first met army pilot William Scott Anderson in Portland.
You were, like, this warrior, you know? I think he has skill.
I think-- I think it's very good.
But, um, I think, um, I think I have a bit of an edge, personally.
- How'd it go? - Pretty good.
Feel good about it? I feel really good about it.
He deserves a shot.
No.
Maybe.
Let's see how many spots we have left.
Backstage and getting ready to perform is 36-year-old Michael grasso.
I don't think there's anyone in this competition that wants it as bad as me.
In new York, his big illusion shocked everybody.
- That was amazing.
- Wow.
Well, in new York, I did a big grand illusion.
This time in Las Vegas I'm gonna give the judges an opportunity to see the sleight of hand skill.
That's really what makes up a great magician.
- How are you? - I'm good.
Do you believe this is the biggest moment of your career, potentially? Oh, this is definitely the biggest moment of my career.
Without a doubt.
- Nervous? - A little bit.
Okay, well, look, best of luck.
You have to remember when you do an act like that with cards and that, can the person in the 40th row in a Las Vegas theater see it? Thank you very much.

What he did in the audition was "wow.
" This was good.
Not "wow.
" Yes, it's not big scale, but it was very slick.
Instead of going with the big illusions, I went with something that takes a lifetime of practice to achieve what I just did.
And, uh, if this was the last show of my life, you know, I think the card manipulations would probably be what I would choose to do.
Now Michael can only hope that his gamble to go small instead of big pays off.

I'm a perfectionist, you know, but I'm nervous.
I'm not gonna lie.
I've been performing all my life, and every performance is nerve-racking.
But there's nothing more nerve-racking than today.

So how I did that, I had it in my hand.

Paper trick took me 4 1/2 years to learn to do this right.
I had to practice in front of a video camera.
First you rip it.
Then you put it in an envelope.
Put some DNA on it.
Look at it, show everybody.

Here's the trick.
That one, I already had in the envelope.

- The judges first met at the Portland auditions.
And in the same category as Pierre is 56-year-old jia-yi he, who auditioned in new York.

Play! That's enough! Count it, four harmonicas.
I play five.
He may have, you know, a lot of harmonicas, but I have the gold one.
I am sure I'm better than him.
I'm ready to be selected for Hollywood.
Today will be world premiere.
You don't need five harmonica to play good music.

You think you were better than Pierre? - Sure.
- Yeah? He is not better than I.
So you're better than I, huh? Yeah.
Which would you rather watch? Pierre or - I like them both.

If you had to choose one.
Do you think that this show needs a harmonica player? Maybe not.
Next are the acrobats, and their time to be called to the stage is just moments away.
It's a diverse and highly competitive group.
The category I'm in, it's tough, but, uh, I got confident, I got heart, and I got gut, and I'm not afraid.
I think we're all feeling the pressure in this group, just watching each other warming up, and not knowing what to expect, really, so it's really having to bring it to the table.
You know, there's a lot of competition, of course, but, uh, but, you know, I think we have what it takes.
Not really sure what to expect from them.
What can rock climbers really do on a stage? I don't know.
Are you happy with that? - I am.
- Yeah.
- Thank you very much.

We've seen them twice now.
Mm-hmm.
- Right.
I mean, how long could you watch that for? If they had the money, can you imagine what they could build? The routine, I don't find it complicated.
It's very easy.
But they were nice and together.
That may be the act to beat.

When it works, it looks beautiful and graceful, but when it works.

What could have just happened on stage, we could have had a really big accident.
While Michael and Ashley have to come to terms with the fact that their performance didn't go to plan, is hoping he can repeat the success of his first audition.
In new York, he amazed the judges with his waterfall of death.
Tonight, I'm gonna have to step it up a notch.
So for the performance, I have something different to give.

Next up is the danger category, and the competition is heating up.
We're bringing fire that nobody's ever seen before.
We're doing things that nobody's ever done before.
The other acts in my group are very, very different.
Nobody else here can do what I'm doing.

I say the stronger they are, the harder they fall.
I might be blonde.
I might be old.
But I'm gonna beat 'em.
I'm ready to compete and do our thing, and blow the judges away.

Every aspect in my act today is gonna have a high level of danger.
I'm gonna have to take you guys outside.
My stuff's a little bit extreme.
If I do it in here and either I or the equipment fails, somebody could get badly hurt.

We're gonna start out today with how strong men pick up girls.
Wow.
Must have been over 900 pounds.
We got bigger stuff.

Whatever the strongman can do, the Paul bunyan lumberjack show can do better.
Go! There are some very good acts, and I honestly hope we all go, but something tells me that's probably not gonna happen.
Back inside the theater, it's time for 39-year-old Antonio restivo, to prove he's more worthy of a place in Hollywood than his fellow competitors.
We're competing with some of the best acts in the world, but we're bringing the best game, and we are gonna win this.
The judges first saw Antonio in our new York auditions.

I've worked my entire life doing what I do, and I feel like I'm bringing something that nobody else is doing.

As the competition continues, there's an additional challenge for the next category up.
All day long, the dry, Vegas air has been bothering the classical singers.
You have to keep the voice warmed up once it's started, and you have to keep it wet.
The stage here is very difficult, because it's very dry.
But for prince poppycock, it's causing more than just a dry throat.
For the last couple of days, I started losing my voice.
I'm about 75% now.
- 32-year-old store clerk John quail first met the judges in new York.
You are magnificent.
Despite impressing the judges in new York, John is now struggling in Vegas.
I have some kind of virus or something.
So I just want to do the best that I can while I'm here.
May not be able to hit it out of the park.
You know, I have to hit a c-sharp, which is hard for me anyways.
I heard a little rumor that you weren't feeling well.
It's true.

But the show must go on, and I'm here to entertain.

And the judges decided to put similar acts together so they could see how they compare to their direct competition.
And next up is the dance category, starting with the tappers.
The hot shots are a family group who've been dancing together their whole lives before the judges saw them at the Portland auditions.

Backstage, the last two dance groups are warming up for their chance to impress the judges.
It's a head-on clash between street performers reckless from fort lauderdale, Florida, and style pros crew from Los Angeles.
They're stiff competition, so it's just like, "okay, we got to make sure we're on top of our game.
" Style pros crew, they're bringing it, but we're different.
We bring theatrics.
We bring more than just a dance routine.
Well, I've been seeing reckless rehearse, you know.
They're a real good crew.
They're real tight.
I just think that we have something that's unique.
That is what's gonna put us over.

Our performance, we did everything to the best of our ability, so that's what we have to depend on now.

I sense a certain kind of innocence and vulnerability, which I find really appealing.

I'm kind of doing this, like, totally on my own.
I ran away from home when I was 17 years old, and I haven't had any contact with any of my family, and so if I fail, I don't have anyone to fall back on.

The competitive environment is tough, but there's one category that's all about having fun.

People say that I'm younger and I might not want it as much as the older guys, but no way.

Connor was diagnosed with epilepsy at age four, but at his Portland audition, he showed extraordinary control and grace.
It was one of the most beautiful, unique things I've seen live.
It's wonderful.
A couple years ago, there was a point in my life when I felt like I couldn't do anything.
I just felt worthless.
What's going through your mind right now? Oh, I just hope I do good.
Now I know that I have something to be proud of.
Probably more than any of my friends do.
What advice did you have for him? Have fun.

This is the worst crowd I've ever performed for! In the worst possible scenario, he turned it around.
As a bearded American, I face a lot of discrimination.
I'm frequently mistaken for a hasidic Jew, a Muslim, or occasionally an amish businessman.
I find that insulting.
Not because I have a problem with any of those religions, but because the unspoken assumption is the only reason to have a beard like that is because God is forcing you to.
How do you think that went? It felt pretty good.

I got to, like, uh, tell my jokes.
That could be the problem, because I thought you were better when 3,000 people were baying for your blood.
When you have an audience that's great, like, you definitely do feed off their energy.

And getting ready to hit the stage are the male singers.
This year, the standard is higher than ever before, with more singer-songwriters making it through to this Vegas round than we've ever seen.
They've got to be better than the audition.
That has to be the bar.
Because there's so much competition that actually we can afford to be that ruthless.
Well, now that I've seen my competition in the male category, I am-- I am very nervous.
There's a lot of talent, and I do hope that I stand out.
With group b watching and wishing for their chance, the first of the male singers take the stage.
I said Georgia Ooh Georgia She laid her heart and soul out in her hands This show's called America's got talent.
He is the epitome of America.
But for some acts, the pressure of the competition is more than they can handle.

And backstage, watches and waits.
My heart's been, like, pounding ever since I've been here.
The waiting, anticipating, the nerves.
Just, it's really just crazy.
I don't know how to explain it.
Taylor wowed the judges with his performance in Dallas.

And both he and his dad were a nervous wreck.

Last audition, I was really nervous.
My dad's here with me today, and we've been practicing in the room constantly.

This has just been absolutely incredible.

So the judges are ready, and now it's time for the performances to begin.
First up are the magicians, and already they're sizing up the competition.
I think I can definitely beat the other magicians in a heartbeat.
But with a lot of work.
And I think my biggest competition here is Michael grasso.
I'm nervous.
I've seen my competition in the magic category.
I know they're doing big illusions, but what I'm doing is I'm bringing magic back to its purest form- sleight of hand.
These guys are serious here, man.
The guy with those hands, are you kidding me or what? I couldn't do that.
It's not funny, though.
I've met all my competition.
They're absolutely amazing.
And just to be included, you know, in that pool of people, is a tremendous honor.
And, you know, I'm definitely gonna have to step it up to try and maintain in the competition.
The judges first met army pilot William Scott Anderson in Portland.
You were, like, this warrior, you know? I think he has skill.
I think-- I think it's very good.
But, um, I think, um, I think I have a bit of an edge, personally.

I don't think there's anyone in this competition that wants it as bad as me.

That's really what makes up a great magician.

" This was good.

" Yes, it's not big scale, but it was very slick.
Instead of going with the big illusions, I went with something that takes a lifetime of practice to achieve what I just did.
And, uh, if this was the last show of my life, you know, I think the card manipulations would probably be what I would choose to do.
Now Michael can only hope that his gamble to go small instead of big pays off.

We bring theatrics.
We bring more than just a dance routine.
Well, I've been seeing reckless rehearse, you know.
They're a real good crew.
They're real tight.
I just think that we have something that's unique.
That is what's gonna put us over.
