Nashville s05e11 Episode Script
Fire and Rain
1 Previously on Nashville I want us to write our story.
They're gonna film us while we're writing? I promise I won't get in the way.
- (phone ringing) - Hello? Where are you? I've been texting and calling! What happened? (crying) No! You're her daughter, who better to sing a tribute to her than you? Let me be your sanctuary Okay.
Fork to mouth just one time for me, please? Plug your nose and try, Daph.
Look If I do, can I stay home again? Well, you got to go back to school sometime, but it doesn't have to be today.
This damn toaster won't work.
Here.
Have some eggs.
I don't want the eggs.
I just (cell phone rings) want a piece of toast.
Hello? Sorry, I can't talk right now.
Who was that? Some person from a TV show in New York.
It's like the 10th person that's called.
Don't even know how they got my number in the first place.
The nerve of some people.
If you don't recognize the number, don't pick it up.
That's my policy, all right? (cell phone rings) - Hey.
- Hey.
I was just calling to check in.
Let you know that I'm here if you need me for anything.
Even if it's just to sit next to you.
Thank you.
I mean it.
I know work is the last thing anyone wants to talk about right now.
But, um, here's where we are.
We have found a great tour for you guys.
The headliner is Margo Price.
She's a big fan on account of your video.
- Yeah, love Margaret Price.
- How soon does it start? Uh, two weeks from today in Memphis.
I don't know if I can leave that soon.
- Do you have a conflict? - No.
I just What? - What? - Nothing, nothing.
I'm good.
Okay.
The last thing I think we need to start talking about is how we're gonna release Rayna's final album to the public.
It's not finished.
Okay.
When will it be ready? Never? Deacon, I understand this is incredibly raw.
But, you know, a lot of important albums from the Basement Tapes to the Smile Sessions, - they were released unfinished.
- Yeah, those are good.
- Yes, they are.
- Rayna would not have wanted that.
Okay.
Well, I can't speak for that.
But I do know that Rayna was proud of this album.
And I know that there are millions of people out there who are desperate to hear the final things that she had to say.
I don't know.
Don't you think we maybe owe it to her fans? The only person I owe anything to is Rayna.
(knocking on door) - Oh, my goodness.
- Hi.
Just dropping a few things off.
Seeing how everyone's holding up.
- Oh, thank you.
- Hi, Bo.
Where would you like all this? Anywhere it will fit.
We're kind of overstocked and I can't get anybody to eat, so Hey.
I am so sorry to put you on the spot like that.
But you sounded so damn beautiful - singing your mama's song.
- Thank you.
Who is this? All right, well, this is her cousin.
And there's a recently bereaved 17-year-old that you've been harassing and we'd all really appreciate it if you could stop.
- Thank you.
- Who was that? I don't know.
Early morning, late night show.
One of the Jimmy's.
Don't ask me which one.
Are you telling me she's getting offers to appear on national television and you're hanging up on them? Constantly.
Tell me there's at least a manager that's quarterbacking.
What? The girl's having a moment.
Whether it's good timing or bad.
These shows are gonna give you an opportunity to play your music on a bigger stage.
Isn't that what you've always wanted? It's just a lot at once.
It's not like the train is leaving the station and she's gonna miss it.
She's amazing.
I just feel like it's all hands on deck at the moment.
(sighs) I could take her to New York.
I'm not kidding.
Avery can look after Cadence.
I am a different person that whatever that look that you just gave me implied.
I'm not implying nothing.
I just feel like family should be together right now.
- What about you, Maddie? - Hmm? What are you feeling? I feel like the only reason people really want to talk to me is 'cause I just cried on television in front of the whole world.
- No.
- What? That's not why, all right? It's 'cause you got up on a big stage in the hardest situation imaginable.
And you were magical.
You were beautiful.
And the world saw that.
You wanna go? I will take care of her like she is my own.
You know that.
You should have seen him.
He was just a wreck.
And when I brought up Rayna's album Yeah, well, I'm sure he's grieving.
We all grieve differently.
And just because I channel it into work - doesn't mean I'm a monster.
- Yeah, well, no one's saying that.
I feel like he can't see that I'm doing this for Rayna.
I'm doing this for her company, for her legacy.
Maybe with time Well, that's the thing.
There is no time.
Now is the moment.
The whole world's watching.
That won't last.
I don't know.
Maybe he'd listen to you.
- Me? - Yeah.
I mean, I'm not from here.
I'm not a fellow artist.
Me and Deacon don't know each other that particularly well, to be honest.
Okay, but you are made from the same clay.
Would you try it? Please? Okay.
- Oh! - Let me take you.
Yes.
- Let's go, girl! - One second.
- Okay, you promise this is okay, Dad? - Of course, it is, yes.
Even though I'm leaving you and Daph? Honey, look, if your mom was here, no doubt she'd be nervous for you.
But she would be so excited too.
So you go.
Okay.
- Love you.
- Love you.
This city just makes you feel alive, doesn't it? You know, I don't really have the best memories of it, but Well, now you're with me.
So we're just gonna make a bunch of new ones.
- Okay? - Okay.
Zach cares.
He really does.
His way of showing it is by trying to keep Rayna's company doing well.
But without this album, he's just not optimistic about its chances.
Yeah, well, technically, he's right.
I mean, our acquisition of Wheelin' has us in the red for the near future.
We thought our deal with Zach didn't have a down side because either of us could pull out at any moment.
But that was before we took on a boatload of debt.
So now if he decides to yank his money out we're dead.
Hang on.
Nobody's said anything about Zach threatening to leave.
Zach is not the enemy here.
He just wants to be met halfway.
- Deacon? - Yeah.
I'll think about it, Will.
(fanfare on TV) From Comedy Central's World News headquarters Ooh, Juliette, I'm freaking out! - I don't think I can do this.
- You can do this.
I can't go on and talk about my mom.
I'm gonna lose it.
The only thing you have to do out there is be yourself.
The adrenalin's gonna get you through, I promise.
Our next guest won our hearts at the CMTs, and now she's ready to take the music world by storm.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Maddie Jaymes! (cheering) - They love you.
- Awesome.
They love you.
- Welcome to the show.
- Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for being here.
All of us are great fans.
And let me start, if I may, by conveying my deepest condolences.
All of America is really brokenhearted over what happened.
Thank you.
Now I was so moved by your performance of your mother's song the other night.
What was going through your mind when you walked out on the stage? Uh, I was trying not to throw up.
(chuckles) - That's fair.
- Yeah.
It's completely fair.
I mean, I can't imagine what it's been like for you.
Are you holding up okay? Yeah.
I've just spent a lot of time at home with my family.
Um I'm sorry.
I don't know if I can talk more about this right now.
That's fine.
We can talk about something else.
Let's talk about your music.
I've heard that in addition to your beautiful voice, you write all your own music as well? Yeah.
My sister and I, we've been writing since we could hold a guitar.
And recently I've been putting together a bunch of songs in hopes to make my first album.
- That is so exciting.
- So exciting.
You guys are excited, right? Yeah, you know what? In fact, I'm going to buy an advanced copy right now.
- No.
- That's what I'm gonna do.
- Yeah, no, I've got the money.
- Please, no.
There we go.
You just tell me when it's done, you'll send it to me? You will get it for free only 'cause you've been so nice.
It's my only $10.
- (chuckles) - I'm really excited for this.
- Thank you.
- I hope you deliver.
- Well, thank you so much.
Well, thank you very much for coming to the show.
- Thank you for having me.
- I'm excited to hear the album.
- Everyone else is as well.
- Thank you.
Ladies and gentlemen, Maddie Jaymes! - Thanks, guys.
- (cheering) It's after your bedtime.
Go get ready.
You okay? What you wrestling with in that big brain of yours? Every time I think of mom, I feel like I'm gonna be sick.
So I tell my brain not to think of her, and somehow that makes me think of her way more.
I did exactly the same thing when I lost my mama.
I tried so hard not to think about her.
And eventually I realized that sometimes the best medicine is to go ahead and think about her all you want.
Reflect on her and all the good and you realize that all of that good is still right there inside of you.
She's right there in your heart.
Why did they want Maddie and not both of us? We both sing.
Well, that is because the world is shallow.
And people are obsessed with beautiful young women.
Which is actually good for you since you are fast becoming one.
You want to sing one of your mama's songs maybe? I don't want to.
I'm sorry.
Goodnight.
'Night.
I just wanted to say your singing, - it really touched me and - Thank you so much.
Yeah.
I hope you know that you have something special.
So, you know, don't ever stop.
You know, I actually have a confession.
I might be the only person in America who missed your storied performance the other night.
- That's okay.
- Wait.
Are you being serious right now? Yeah, unfortunately.
Well, I mean, you know what needs to happen then, right? - What? - You have to sing it.
- Right now? - Yeah.
Would you? Maybe just catch it on YouTube? I'm trying everything to get you to sing it here.
Please? For both of us? Please? It's like you've been the only one for all my life Like I never looked into another's eyes Turn the light off, go to bed Tell me all about the day you had Lay beside me.
It's time to rest You can close your eyes You've done your best Let me be your sanctuary Let me be your safe place to fall I will share the weight you carry Let me be your sanctuary Wow.
Yeah, girl! (laughs) One, two One, two, three, four (playing country music) (laughs) Okay, okay, let's do this one more time from the top.
Sorry, guys.
One, two.
One, two, three, four (playing country music) RAYNA: "I feel like I'm standing on the edge of a hurricane and it's lifting my feet off the ground, like my whole body is vibrating and some higher force is moving my arms and my legs and it is scaring the living daylights out of me.
Like I'm on a high precipice and there are only two options: I'm either gonna run far away or dive straight in.
" - Rayna! - Open the door, lovebirds.
Woo! (audience cheering) So, Maddie, you know that you're everywhere this week, right? - I don't know about that.
- I'm serious.
All over social media.
I asked my daughters if they saw it.
And they were like, yeah, of course, we did.
Everybody saw it.
- (applause) - Oh, my gosh.
You know, I had the pleasure of meeting your mom and I was a really big fan of hers.
And I have to tell you.
I'm looking at you right now and you are the spitting image of her.
- It's incredible.
- Well, thank you.
"Blue Light, Red Light" is like my sister's favorite album.
But not your favorite? Just your sister's No, it's one of mine, too.
(laughs) One of mine, too.
So, obviously, the circumstances, your loss, this has to be a confusing time for you, a very difficult time for you.
Are you able to kind of enjoy any of it? I'm trying to be open to the idea that, you know, the world works in mysterious ways and bad things can come from good intentions and good things can come from tragedy.
Obviously, I'm not all like, thanks, Mom, for all the attention I'm getting.
(chuckles) That's a good way to look at it.
- You're wise beyond your years, Maddie.
- Thanks.
We'll have more with Maddie Jaymes when we come back.
Daph, maybe she didn't - mean it like that.
- Just leave me alone, please! Gunnar, I'm so sorry.
I can't do this to her.
Wait, wait.
What are you talking about? They need me too much.
I can't All right, Scarlett, listen.
You've done a great job helping them, okay? You really have, but you're not their caretaker.
Deacon is.
Seriously, I mean, you keep telling the girls to put one foot in front of the other.
But what about you? You can't put your life on hold forever.
Just What? What is it? I can't leave them.
(sighs) We have a problem here, people.
And that's why I have called this meeting so that we can put our heads together and try and figure this out.
So help me fix this.
Help me figure this out.
Deacon, that album, whatever state it is in, is an asset, something that this company has precious little of at the moment.
- It's an asset.
- Yes, and, sure, down the road, Juliette will have a new record.
And we need to get Maddie into the studio as soon as possible.
But right now, Deacon, it's all we have.
It isn't finished, Zach.
I told you.
Okay, well, then help me understand.
What isn't finished about it? - They're duets, okay? - And? They're duets, Rayna's part, that's just a scratch track.
And I haven't done mine yet.
I haven't done my side of the duet.
Okay.
I'm sorry.
I'm not the artist.
But it does sound like you can finish them.
If we use her scratch vocals, you add your vocals in Do you know what these songs are about? - I get it, I get it - They're about love! They're about undying love! Deacon, I'm trying to help here.
I'm trying to hear all sides.
I'm trying to hear all options Let's just quit going around this thing! Go right to it, all right? You want something from me that I'm not gonna give to you! That is clear! What is unclear is are you threatening Highway - What are you talking about? - You heard me! It sounds like you're threatening to Deacon, the world is threatening us constantly! There's outstanding payments to Wheelin' Dealin'.
There's a tax due on Rayna's estate at the end of the year.
Do you want to hear about these things? Because at the end of the day, I need to know that.
It's not a charity.
It's a business, Deacon.
- Here we are.
- And I should add that's a good thing seeing as it supports your two girls! Come on, Zach.
- Don't you dare.
- I'm sorry, Bucky.
Deacon, listen.
Listen just one second.
Nobody knows better than you what Rayna would have wanted creatively, nobody.
What Zach is asking and what I'm asking, I need you just to take a step back if you can for a second and think about what she would have wanted for this company.
She put so much of her heart and soul into this company.
Do what you want with the company, all right? I'm just I'm done listening to you trying to profit off our grief.
Bucky, you gotta help here.
We're drowning.
And I don't know what else to do.
Just tell me what you need, Zach, to feel confident in your investment.
I need those audio files by the end of the week.
I'm trying to be open to the idea that, you know, the world works in mysterious ways.
And bad things can come from good intentions.
And good things can come from tragedy.
Obviously, I'm not all like, thanks, Mom, for all the attention I'm getting.
(chuckles) (cell phone rings) Maddie? How you doing, baby? - (crying) - Honestly, I'm not good.
What's happening, baby? Everyone is saying that I don't care that my mom died.
And I'm so sick and Juliette's saying I have to do the show.
Maddie? Listen to me.
You don't have to do anything you don't want to do.
I already told her I would.
I'm sure Juliette means well.
But it doesn't necessarily mean she knows what's best for you at the moment.
I mean, look at her life.
Look at some of the choices she has made.
You come home whenever you want to come home.
In fact, you should come home.
Deacon needs you.
Wait.
What? What do you mean? Nothing.
I just sorry.
I just feel like we should all be there for him right now.
Mads, are you ready? We needed to be there 15 minutes ago! (crying) What's going on? I thought you were getting dressed.
I can't do it.
I can't, I'm sorry.
What am I supposed to tell the producers? I don't know, Juliette.
I'm sorry.
I just can't I can't.
Okay.
I'll cancel it.
Okay.
Thank you.
I just I want her to stay this size forever, you know? I do.
Yeah, it goes really fast.
RAYNA: "When I look in my baby's eyes, all I see is him staring back.
His eyes, his soul, his and mine together in this beautiful being we've created.
Oh, God, if Teddy knew I felt this way, it would just kill him.
But I hate that I can't share this with Deacon.
I just don't see any other path.
Not one that isn't paved with more pain, more loss.
Can't stand it, though.
It's eating away at me.
It wears me down.
Each day, I pick up the phone to call him.
Each day, I lose my nerve.
" Happy Birthday, dear Maddie Happy Birthday to you Gonna blow it out? Aw, baby.
(knocking on door) Not now, Scarlett, please.
I'm all right.
It's Avery.
Hold on, Avery, hold on.
- Hey.
- Hey.
I was just in the neighborhood.
Thought I'd stop by and say hi.
Oh, thank you.
Wanna grab some lunch? Yeah, um, I don't think so.
Not now.
I appreciate it, though.
I'm just doing some stuff.
You know, if there's anything that you want to talk about or need to talk about I just want you to know that I'm here.
I appreciate that.
I'll tell you what.
Right now, the main thing that's bugging me is that Zach is pressuring me to do the album like yesterday.
And I'm being stubborn and I'm not (sighs) doing it.
So I'm probably letting down Highway 65 and the girls.
And every other thing.
But, uh I can't even listen to it let alone Yeah, well, um, is there anything you need? Is there anything I can do? If you need anything I appreciate it.
Thank you.
I mean it.
Yeah.
All right, thanks.
Whiskey Foxtrot Decade.
- Roger that.
Good target.
- Incoming! Incoming! You try so hard to do the right thing and everyone turns you into a villain.
Well, couldn't it just be that not everyone sees it as the right thing? Are you turning against me too? No.
No, no, I'm not I'm not doing anything like that.
It's so easy to hate the guy with money.
Everybody wants something from me.
Acquaintances, second cousins with stupid schemes who then turn on a dime.
and they spew hatred at you if you don't shower them with money.
As if I don't bruise like everybody else.
Hey.
It's okay.
Daph! Oh, my God, I missed you so much.
I'm so glad you're back.
I should have never gone.
(sighs) You didn't do anything wrong, babe.
You did nothing wrong at all.
Except be a horrible person! - No, no.
- Are you kidding? It's just confusing to have good things happen to you at a time like this.
- That's all it is.
- Just like I'll go upstairs.
I just forgot how sad I was for one moment.
And now I feel like the worst daughter.
Hey, hey.
You are so far from that.
If your mother was here right now, she would be feeling one thing and one thing only: proud of you.
Are you okay? I'm getting there.
I'm worried about you.
That's one thing you don't got to do, all right? (cell phone rings) Get that.
Hey, I'm sorry I didn't call you earlier (knocking on door) - Hi.
- Hey, is Maddie here? No, she's not.
- Hi! - Hey.
I wanted to tell you that I am disappointed in your lack of professionalism in New York.
That being said, I patched things up with the Today Show and they're willing to give you another opportunity next week.
You think you could just wait one second? Um, no.
How about you wait? And you listen? One of the most amazing things in this world is when you get your shot, and it doesn't come when you want it to and it never comes again! Okay? If you don't seize this, you will regret it for the rest of your life.
Oh, my goodness! How can you say something like that to her when clearly the timing was not right? Because it's the truth! The world doesn't wait until you're ready! I don't believe that.
And even if it were true, there are more important things than chasing after fame! How would you know? Just because you're afraid of success - doesn't mean you get to make those - Just stop! - Both of you just stop.
- Maddie, sweetheart, please wait.
Stop! RAYNA: "Are we being crazy? Giving this another shot? Starting over again? What if after all this waiting, we just disappoint each other? I know Deacon's the love of my life.
But, you know, we haven't done the dishes and filed taxes.
and all the boring stuff that married couples do.
" (buzzer sounds) Who is it? Hey, it's Gunnar and Bucky and Will.
Oh, what y'all want? Hey, Scarlett, Zach really needs a response on the album.
Is Deacon home? Yeah.
Come on up.
RAYNA: "I think we are crazy on some level.
But damn it, it's the kind of crazy that just, that gives me hope.
Makes me feel human.
It's just the most beautiful kind of crazy.
And it scares the hell out of me.
There's one thing I've learned.
I just got to jump right into the heart of that fear.
Especially with this man.
Right now, I have this electric feeling deep inside me.
And I swear after all these years, it feels like I'm 19 again and we just locked eyes for the first time.
How about that?" (sighs) (knocking on door) Deacon, would you mind coming downstairs? There's something important we need to go over with you.
I'm doing something important right now, Scarlett.
Oh, well I know he needs space, Scarlett.
I know, and I'm trying to be respectful of his space.
But the fact is, it's not just about Deacon right now.
- You need to leave him alone! - It is about him! This is a unique situation, Scarlett.
There's so many people that depend on this decision, right? It's not just me.
It's not just Deacon.
This affects everybody.
Am I right? It's our careers.
It's Bucky's job.
It's the girls' inheritance.
You can't come in here and make all of that that man's problem.
It's not his fault! - No! - Nobody's angry at Deacon.
We're worried about him.
We just need him to act! What the hell are you guys talking about? Look, we all write about heartbreak for a living and now that it's staring us in the face, it's like we're afraid of it.
We judge it like it's strange or weird.
This man just lost the love of his life! How's he supposed to act? We need to be there for him, not ask things of him.
How are we supposed to do that? I'm sorry you saw us fighting like that.
You know, it's just that Scarlett is very protective of you 'cause you're blood.
And I feel like I have a very special connection with you too because of my relationship with your mom.
But I don't want you to feel like you have to help me.
No, no, no.
Not at all.
What I mean is that every time I've stumbled in my career, your mom was there to pick me up even when I didn't deserve it.
And I never got the chance to properly thank her.
Maybe now I can.
I just see so much potential in you.
And I think the only thing you need is somebody who has some serious experience in this industry.
Someone who's had everything and the kitchen sink thrown at them and still come out on top.
I think I know just the person.
(scoffs) What are you saying? Saying I think Glenn or somebody else can handle the boring stuff.
When it comes to guidance, I want to manage your career.
I want to take you all the way to the top.
Look, you don't need to respond right now, okay? Just think about it.
Okay.
Hey.
You okay? Not really.
What's wrong? You remember when Mom used to just give us advice about everything? We'd get so annoyed.
Literally wanted to rip my hair out.
I could really use her right now.
It's okay.
She's still here inside us.
You wanna sing one of her songs? Yeah.
I had that dream late last night I was yours and you were mine I watched you fade into the morning light Again And I don't mean to change your mind We've had this talk a hundred times It's raining like a river down my eyes And I don't want to talk about How our hearts are doing now God knows the both of us have tried We were so in love, just a couple kids It's a long way back again A few left turns And honey, we got lost But I still kept my fingers crossed Wish I could take a train Back to us again How would you describe your artistic process? Well, let's see.
That's changed a lot over the years.
If you'd asked me that 15 years ago, I would have a very, very serious answer for you.
And then life happens.
And, you know, now I have these two girls that I'm trying to raise up and I have this wonderful husband who I am working with and writing with.
And, you know, I'm a very hands-on mom.
So I got the carpool and we got dinner every night.
So my process becomes whatever hour I can grab in-between.
It's all about life that goes into the process.
I guess I could describe it as organized chaos.
(chuckles) I don't mean to change your mind We've had this talk a hundred times It's raining like a river down my eyes And I don't want to talk about How our hearts are doing now (sobbing) God knows the both of us have tried We were so in love, just a couple kids It's a long way back again (sobbing) Oh, great.
You know where to go.
I just wanted to help.
Of course.
Come on back.
What does it mean to be making this album with Deacon about your life together? It means everything.
I could bore you with all the details of what brought us to this moment.
But let me just tell you that this album and being able to be married to him and have him be the father of my children finally after all these years, we've got a lot of water under the bridge.
And a lot of history and I've seen Deacon go through all of it and he always comes up stronger than he was before.
He's just incredible that way.
He never gives up.
And now to be able to feel that strength in my life every day? And to see him being that way with our children? And to know that he's the best father that they could ever ask for? And the best part about it is that I know he's never gonna give up on me or on my girls.
Or on our record or in any other damn thing I drag him into.
(both laugh) He's gonna be there.
Pretty lucky.
Wait, Daph do you hear that? (music playing) Come here, come here.
Go get your daddy, okay? Girls? Maddie? Daphne? Where are you? - Dad! - Come here.
You have to see this, come here.
Come here, come here.
- I love you so much.
- I love you, too.
- Did you know that I love you? - I love you.
You know you have to know, all right? - We know.
Come on.
- Listen.
I got to talk to you guys, all right? - No, after.
- Let's sit down and - Come on, come on! - No, no, you have to see this.
Where we going? Until we think we won't see the sky again We thought we could finish it in the way she would have loved.
But if you don't want to, we can I know these storms will pass No.
Keep going.
- And the sun will shine - Keep going.
And through the good times and the bad times You're mine I promise you Right here, right now Won't ever let you go, this I vow And through the good times and the bad times You're mine Yeah, the good times and the bad times You're mine You're mine You're mine You're mine You're mine When the years have passed And we're old and gray I'll be standing here where I am today Through the good times and the bad times Good times and the bad times You're mine There's, uh, still one piece left.
I don't know if I can.
You can.
We can all get outta here if you like.
No.
Y'all stay.
There's never been a day When I walked this world alone And never was a night That I didn't feel at home You been a part of me forever On this road I've traveled on For so long It's like you've been the only one For all my life Like I never looked into another's eyes The only hand I've ever held onto Oh, I can't remember never loving you Every morning I wake up And I thank my lucky stars Another day with you My love is where you are It's simple and it's beautiful I guess some things never change Never change It's like you've been the only one for all my life Like I never looked into another's eyes The only hand I've ever held onto No, I can't remember never loving you See you.
Bye.
I'll do the tour.
- You will? - Yeah.
Yes.
Just one thing you need to know.
What's that? I'm pregnant.
And I'm Honestly, I don't know.
The only hand I've ever held onto No, I can't remember never loving you
They're gonna film us while we're writing?
