Mission Impossible (1966) s05e13 Episode Script

The Hostage

Walter A.
Phelan, American hotel magnate, leaves the country today after three weeks of discussion with construction companies and architects.
Plans have been finalized for a chain of motels and hotels, the cost of which, according to Phelan, will be upwards of $30 million American dollars.
Thanks, Fred.
You did a magnificent job, Paris.
Walter Phelan, hotel magnate.
Perfect cover.
Well, the mission was successful because of your cooperation.
Say good-bye to Jim and the others for me.
I will.
Thanks again.
Eagle Control to police headquarters.
Eagle Control to police headquarters.
We hear you go ahead, Eagle.
This is Robert Siomney, speaking on behalf of Jorge Cabal, leader of the Popular Revolutionary Front.
We have just abducted Walter A.
Phelan, the American magnate.
PRF demands that the following men, now being held in the government prison at Cortina Barracks, be immediately released.
Carlos Marchesi, Rodolfo Torres and Luis Cabal.
Lf, within 24 hours, these men are not freed, Walter A.
Phelan will be executed.
Any trouble? He didn't want to accompany us, that's all.
Phelan is our guest.
Treat him as such.
Make yourself comfortable, Señor Phelan.
Yes.
Yes, all right, thanks very much.
I'll be in touch.
Fred Sanders, the Americal Consul.
He says witnesses saw Paris take a taxi in front of the Consulate, and then he was transferred to a truck unconscious a few blocks away, as though he'd been drugged.
Jim, are you sure there's no connection between Paris's abduction and the mission which brought us here in the first place? Well, Paris's cover as Walter Phelan was perfect, Dana.
It's just lucky that Siomney took him when he did, after we'd finished our mission.
Does Sanders have any idea where Paris is right now? No, but I think we have to assume they took him directly to Cabal's headquarters.
That doesn't give us a whole lot to go on.
That's supposed to be a real stronghold, and no one knows where it's located.
So we've got nothing.
A a big zero.
No, not at all, Dana.
Siomney and Cabal made a mistake, and a very big one.
They kidnapped Paris, not Walter A.
Phelan.
Right.
So let's wait and see what his move will be.
The kidnapping of American hotel magnate, Walter A.
Phelan, is acknowledged to have been planned and executed by Robert Siomney, the onetime medical student, now the self-proclaimed "Apostle of Revolución," whose tactics, ranging from senseless destruction to outright murder, have terrorized a dozen different nations.
The government is determined not to submit, especially since Jorge Cabal's personal record of murder and terror is equaled only by that of Robert Siomney's.
But today's crime does bear one unusual aspect: One of the three prisoners whose release is demanded is Luis Cabal, Jorge's only son.
The American I think he's dying.
That's how I found him.
He'll feel better in a few minutes.
You do feel better.
I'm laughing at you, Siomney.
The joke is on you.
I've got Hodgkin's disease.
Hodgkin's disease.
Lymphomatosis.
What is he talking about? A blood disease.
Destroys the lymph glands.
You're lying! I wish I were.
Robert, I don't understand.
What do you take for maintenance? Vinblastine sulfate.
What do you know about it? I once studied medicine how much? One and a half milligrams a week.
Until a few minutes ago, you showed no symptoms whatsoever.
I'll be very happy to discuss my symptoms with you, Doctor.
Some other time.
What does all this mean, Robert? It means, Señor Cabal, that sometime during the next 72 hours, unless I get some medication, you're going to have a very dead hostage on your hands.
And so, a dramatic new turn of events in the Walter A.
Phelan kidnap case.
The rebels have announced they must have medication for their prisoner, or he will soon be dead of Hodgkin's disease.
How did Paris ever manage to simulate Hodgkin's? I don't know, he must have found something, Dana.
Some drug.
Maybe something growing wild that would give him a chill and a fever.
Then he told Siomney it was Hodgkin's.
But Siomney was a brilliant medical student.
Well, still, he'd need a fully equipped lab and two or three days of complicated tests to find out whether Paris is lying.
Well, Paris and I talked about Hodgkin's only a few weeks ago.
He probably figured the only way we could find out where he's being held was by delivering the medication.
Hi.
Well, the government absolutely and categorically refuses to release any of the three prisoners.
They're willing to cooperate with our plan, but only in return for one thing.
We have to deliver Robert Siomney.
Medicine ready, Doug? This is supposed to be vinblastine sulfate, Jim.
It's really plain old vitamin B, but it's the same color and texture.
Paris would need 15 milligrams of it if he actually had Hodgkin's and missed the maintenance dosage.
Mm-hmm.
The transmitter's in the cap.
It'll put out a 50 watt continuous wave signal up to 500 miles maximum.
Line of sight.
All right, contact Robert Siomney.
Meet them at Montalvo Bridge.
They guarantee our courier safe return.
Idiots! You radio them back that I have no intention of meeting them anywhere.
Tell them to pack the medicine in a parachute canister and place it aboard an aircraft.
It's to contact you when airborne for further instructions.
Radio contact must be made with the aircraft in exactly one hour and 20 minutes.
All right.
You actually enjoy this, don't you? You should be over a body of water any moment.
When you reach it, turn to a heading of 220 degrees and begin descending to 1,000 feet.
Continue on that heading and altitude until contacted again.
Eagle Control to helicopter.
Eagle Control to helicopter.
Come in, Eagle.
There's an open field ahead of you on the same heading.
You'll see an orange marker.
Dispose of the canister over that marker.
When you have done so immediately, I repeat immediately, turn 180 degrees to a heading of zero four zero and climb to an altitude of 5,000 feet.
Proceed on that heading and at that altitude for 15 minutes before returning home.
Roger, Eagle.
We'll wait till it's far enough away, and too high to see us.
The signal is holding, Jim.
Movement has terminated at map coordinates E-15.
Watchdog calling High Flyer This is High Flyer, Watchdog.
Where is our quarry? The quarry is located in the Ysidro Hills, village of San Estoban.
Map coordinates E-15.
Roger, Watchdog.
You'll have your snapshot as soon as I land.
Over.
U-2 will photograph the village from 70,000 feet.
Be completely invisible and inaudible from the ground.
You should have stuck to medicine, Siomney.
I can only wish you the best of luck in this undertaking.
You don't think much of our chances, do you, Comandante? There's no question your plan has imagination, but the people you are dealing with are ruthless.
They have nothing to lose.
What can one do with such people? Well, you are in charge now.
For the next 24 hours.
Bring them into the holding room, please.
Uh, due to the sensitiveness of the present situation between the government and Jorge Cabal's rebel faction, involving as it does, a citizen of the United States, the government has assigned Colonel Leon Tiba of the Inspector General's office, Department of Courts and Prisons, as Special Prosecutor.
Colonel Tiba will remain at Cortina Barracks for the duration of this crisis.
Colonel Tiba.
I have been authorized to issue the following statement: The ransom demand, that is the release of the three prisoners, Carlos Marchese, Rodolfo Torres and Luis Cabal, is hereby categorically rejected.
Now, therefore, I, Leon Tiba, using the powers vested in me, do charge the three above named prisoners with the crime of intended murder, as accomplices, inform them they have been found guilty of such crime and are sentenced to summary execution.
The executions will commence tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.
m.
Carlos Marchese will face the firing squad.
At 9:00 Rodolfo Torres.
At 12:00 noon, Luis Cabal.
Any or all of these sentences may be commuted at any time prior to 6:00 a.
m.
Until 12:00 noon, with the release, unharmed and in good health, of Walter A.
Phelan.
Jorge, that man is not worth the life of your son.
I've already told you, Luis is in no danger.
And who is this Colonel Tiba, anyway? A minor department functionary.
The government is obviously bluffing.
Señor Phelan, the government has apparently decided that your life is expendable.
They've issued us an ultimatum: Unless we release you the three prisoners including Cabal's son will be executed.
I'm offering you the chance to send a message to your government.
Remind them you're an American citizen.
They won't submit to your blackmail.
You will tell them that you are in good health and are being treated well.
This is Walter A.
Phelan.
I'm in good health and have been well treated.
I've received medication for my illness.
So that's under control.
I'd like to take this opportunity to convey a personal message to my family.
All right.
Especially to my son, Ricky whose 12th birthday is tomorrow.
Be a good boy, son.
I love you.
And, uh, to Helen, my wife, I send my dearest love.
Church cell in between.
Mean anything to you, Barney? This is a drawing from the U-2 photograph.
Here's the church.
This building here, with the jeeps and the trucks in front of it must be Cabal's headquarters.
Now this is 30 yards from the church.
This is the building where Paris is.
Now, Dana, the newspapers have been notified.
They know that Anita Lugano is on her way to Cortina Barracks.
Good luck.
Here she is, she's arrived! Anita Lugano has just arrived Señorita Lugano, will you give us a statement? Please.
All I want is to see Luis.
Then it is true, Señorita Lugano.
You're here to plead for Luis Cabal's life? Yes, I want to save him.
Señorita Lugano, this way please.
It is doubtful in this reporter's mind Anita Lugano Lugano.
Do you know her? Luis had many girls.
I didn't know he was serious about one of them.
Why should this particular one plead to Tiba for his life.
I don't know and I don't care! Being there, perhaps she can help him.
She loves him, that's all that's important.
From here on you'll probably run into PRF roadblocks.
Then I'll have no trouble finding my way into the village.
None.
Your transportation will be a car that Luis Cabal was driving when he was arrested.
Dana be careful.
Jorge Cabal is an old revolutionary, he has some scruples but all Siomney wants is a confrontation.
He'll kill Paris and he'll kill you if it serves his purpose.
I'll be careful.
Good luck.
Three minutes to go.
And here in the Colonnade section of Cortina Prison there's an air of hushed expectancy.
Here he comes! Carlos Marchese has appeared, señors y señoritas.
His arms are manacled behind him.
There is a guard on either side of him.
His expression can only be described as grim, as that of a man who knows he's facing certain death.
It is warm here in Cortina Prison, promising a very hot day, one that this man will never see unless, at this last minute the government of rebel Chieftain Jorge Cabal relents and releases the American, Walter Phelan.
Carlos Marchese, you have been found guilty of the crime charged, that of being an accomplice to the crime of intended murder.
You have been sentenced to death by the firing squad, and that sentence is hereby ordered to be carried out.
May God have mercy on your soul.
Please why do you do this? I- I beg you! Please, please, Colonel Tiba, oh, please spare me, I beg you.
I don't want to die! Please! Carlos Marchese was the godfather of my son.
Be brave, Carlos, be brave.
Please! Please! Please.
Marchesi's been moved from the Colonnade section into the ancient prison courtyard.
He appears to have collapsed, so the guards are forced to carry him to the stake, the site of executions since the time of King Alfonzo.
First, the ropes.
And then, the traditional black hood.
Ready.
Aim.
Fire! Ready.
Aim.
Fire! And so, just seconds ago, Rodolfo Torres met his death, like Marchesi before him.
Where are you going, señorita? San Estoban.
What is your business in San Estoban? Sergeant! This is Luis Cabal's car.
I helped him build this compartment.
It is to hide guns.
Sergeant, I am in a desperate hurry.
Where did you get this car? Sergeant, I told you I am in a hurry.
Now, either you let me go through or personally explain to Jorge Cabal that you refused admittance to his son's future wife.
I will have my man drive you in.
Juan! Well, look at Torres.
Well, he had Uh, Comandante, has there been any word from Cabal or Siomney? Uh, gentlemen, this is Mr.
Douglas Lang, personal representative of the United States government.
Sir, do you carry a message from the White House to our government? No, the only message I carry from the Chief Executive is that he deplores the brutality and savagery of men who barter with human lives.
What is your exact mission, Señor Lang? To try and negotiate the release of an American citizen, Mr.
Walter A.
Phelan.
Señor Lang, have you contacted Robert Siomney yet? I can't answer that, I'm sorry.
Have you spoken with the government regarding That's all for now, gentlemen.
Mr.
Lang and I have a great deal to discuss and very little time in which to do it.
Excuse us.
Señorita Lugano.
Yes, I-I I want to see Jorge Cabal.
On what business? I will tell that to him personally.
No, you will tell it to me.
Who are you? Robert Siomney.
The man who is murdering Luis.
I saw you on television.
You're a very brave young lady.
Also a very foolish one to think that I would take your word.
Put her away.
No, let go of me! I want to see Jorge Cabal.
Let go of me! Please! I want to see Jorge Cabal.
Please, I just want to see Jorge Cabal.
Oh, please please, what are you doing? I just want to see Jorge Cabal.
Oh, please.
Hello.
Are you all right? Yeah, so far.
How about you? Depends on Cabal.
Siomney doesn't trust me.
But she comes from Luis! How do you know? None of this makes any sense.
How is it that you yourself didn't know that Luis had a fiancée? The car is his.
Exactly the car is his.
Have you asked yourself how she acquired it? She has his car.
She knew where you were.
Luis told her.
Exactly Luis told her.
Otherwise, how could she know? You see how simple it is? Too simple.
I know your son better than you do.
Luis is far too clever to tell her where you are.
That's enough.
She came from him.
That's what matters to me! Luis said if anything ever happened to him, I was to go to his father.
He said his father would know what to do.
Please, señor, surrender the American.
Save Luis's life.
Luis is a soldier.
Luis is your son! We're fighting a war.
The Americans are sending a special representative.
Any minute now, we'll hear of Luis's release.
Don't listen to him! What does he care if Luis dies? He'll kill the American as he promised, and he and he'll tell you he's proved his point.
Viva la revolution! But your son is dead! My son is a soldier.
I pity you, señor.
Radio message coming in.
One prisoner is enough.
Free her.
- Jorge - Free her! The personal representative of the United States government wishes to speak to Robert Siomney.
How do you do, Mr.
Lang? It is now 10:45.
In one hour and 15 minutes, Luis Cabal will be executed.
Only you can save him.
No, Mr.
Lang, only you can.
The government has just informed me that their decision is irrevocable.
Luis Cabal will not be released.
Then Walter Phelan will die.
We have nothing further to say.
He may just break at any minute.
When the girl's alone, kill her.
Luis, are you willing to die? No one is ever willing to die Colonel.
There's still time to save your life.
If you made a personal plea to your father.
The whimpering of a coward.
You have less than 20 minutes.
Take him to Father Sanchez for his final confession.
Jorge Cabal I make a final appeal to you.
You have seen with your own eyes what happened to Carlos Marchesi, Rodolfo Torres.
Do not let it happen to your own son.
You, Jorge Cabal, and millions of your countrymen have seen your brave son in his final minutes.
Save his life.
There is still time the radio channel remains open.
- Jorge - No.
You must love Luis very much.
Because I pray for him? I pray for us all.
For you, for me, for us all.
When I was very young, younger than Luis, sometimes I would pray.
I also love Luis very much.
But you allow him to die a senseless death.
Our cause, our struggle, is more important, far more important than any one person.
Even my son.
I cannot forgive you, señor.
Perhaps He can.
He'll be out till tomorrow.
- You all right? - Yeah.
This dries instantly.
How much time? Three minutes.
All right, go get the car, park it outside.
You'll have to stay out of Siomney's way until we leave.
Okay.
Luis Pedro Cabal, you have been found guilty of the crime charged that of being an accomplice to the crime of intended murder.
You have been sentenced to death by the firing squad.
That sentence is hereby ordered to be carried out.
May God have mercy on your soul.
Leave it on.
Jorge, there's no need to watch this.
Leave it on! Kill the American.
It's all right, Paris.
It's me.
Curare compound.
Take it right now, you'll be dead for about 15 minutes.
No, not that.
I'm not afraid to see death come for me.
Ready? Aim.
Comandante! Hold your fire! Order! Arms! I'm Douglas Lang, representative of the government of the United States.
At the White House's special request, Comandante Tiba has been ordered to grant Luis Cabal a 15-minute reprieve.
We ask Jorge Cabal and the PRF to reconsider.
Release your hostage, and Luis Cabal's death sentence will be commuted.
We await your decision.
What was that? Siomney! The American.
What have you done, you? What do I say to them? That their man is dead? Say anything, Jorge, but beg them to spare Luis.
Huh.
This is Jorge Cabal.
I regret to inform you that Walter Phelan was killed attempting to escape.
Do you hear me? Your man is dead! He was trying to escape.
The government will accept a substitute for Mr.
Phelan.
If Robert Siomney, and his executioner the man known as Frederico are delivered to our representatives before midnight, Luis Cabal's death sentence will be commuted.
Jorge, call off these fools.
There's very little time.
We must have your decision immediately.
Will you release my son? He will serve out his original sentence, but he will live.
Robert Siomney and the other man will be delivered to you.
You'll die for this, Jorge.
Very well.
Bring them to the border of Ysidro province on route nine.
Also, Phelan's body so that it can be returned home.
Our representatives will be waiting.
No, Robert.
You will die.
Don't be too hard on Frederico.
He didn't have too much to say about it.
