Hudson and Rex (2019) s05e16 Episode Script
Due North
1
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
A neighbour walking their dog
gave us a description of
the driver and the car.
- Nice day.
- JESSE: It's my sister, Crystal.
CRYSTAL: I'm in big trouble.
- Can you come meet me?
- Where is she?
JESSE: Northern Ontario, last I checked.
- [GUNSHOT]
- [WOMEN SCREAM]
[SENSORS BEEPING] [ENGINE FAILING]
- JESSE: Everybody hold on!
- [LOUD CRASH]
SARAH: You're going to go get help
and then you're going
to come back to us safe.
Are you lost?
MAN: Don't worry.
Still have that chain in the yard?
SARAH: When we crashed, it
caused some internal trauma
which means you'll need to operate.
I'm going to give you instructions.
You'll just need to remember them all.
[SARAH CRIES OUT]
No, no, no, no! Sarah, come on!
Come on, Sarah!
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
- CRYSTAL: Okay. We're going to snap this.
- JESSE: Okay.
CRYSTAL: There you go. Okay.
JESSE: Sarah.
Sarah. Sarah, come on.
Wake up, wake up. Please!
[UPBEAT THEME MUSIC]
Detective Scott.
You were right.
Crystal Mills was working
for Royal Cleaners.
But they don't contract to Basal Mining.
Well, what other
companies do they service?
Kinney Technical Solutions?
It's an industrial
waste treatment company.
Wayne Kinney's company handles
waste treatment for Basal Mining.
He worked with Daniel.
He told me that he didn't
know Crystal or Nick.
It's not surprising that
the owner of the company
doesn't know the name
of an after hours cleaner.
But does that make Kinney a suspect?
- Or a target?
- I don't know yet.
This must be the connection
between the two cases.
- Single-minded as always.
- Yeah, well,
one of the many things
you love about me.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX BARKS]
[REX WHINES]
[REX GROWLS]
[METAL CLANGING]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
What the ?
[TRUCK ENGINE REVVING]
SIDNEY: Hey! Buddy!
Where did you come from?
[REX BARKS]
Where's your owner? Are you lost?
[REX WHINES, BARKS]
- Easy, easy
- Hey, there.
- How're you doing?
- [REX BARKS]
There he is, the little bugger.
He got loose from my truck.
- This your dog?
- Yeah.
C'mon boy, let's go.
- [REX BARKING]
- Come on.
- Come on.
- I don't think he is yours.
Look, if he's lost,
then I'm entitled to some reward.
- That's all I'm saying.
- Unbelievable.
[REX BARKS]
Sorry, is there some
sort of problem here?
No problem at all.
- Okay.
- [CANISTER FALLS]
- You have a nice day.
- SIDNEY: What is it?
- Yeah.
- Hey.
[REX BARKS]
Okay, buddy. Hey.
What is that? Is that a note?
[REX WHINES]
I think there's been a plane crash.
[REX WHINES]
[SOFT MUSIC]
CHARLIE: Joe.
- [PHONE CHIMING]
- A call is coming through.
Finally.
Hello?
SIDNEY: Detective
Sergeant Sidney Scott, OPS.
- Charlie Hudson?
- Yeah.
SIDNEY: Well, there's someone
here who wants to say hi to you!
- [REX BARKS]
- Rex!
Buddy, I am glad to see you.
[REX BARKS]
And Sarah Truong, and Jesse Mills?
- Are they with you too?
- SIDNEY: When Rex found us,
he was alone but he had a note.
It said there's been a plane crash.
Plane crash? What are you talking about?
SIDNEY: The note said a plane crash.
Flew approximately 15
minutes, southwest
Okay, you know what? It's too long.
I'm going to send you a picture!
CHARLIE: Three survivors. Two had
blunt force trauma to the abdomen.
No immediate signs of pneumothorax.
Third with simple distal fracture.
Please alert Charlie Hudson
at SJPD to send assistance.
It doesn't say anything
about who the survivors are.
That's all the information
that I have. I'm sorry.
We're going to take off now and
we're going to look for them.
Please find them.
- We'll do our best, Detective.
- [REX BARKS]
SIDNEY: Okay, everybody.
Okay, Rex.
Help us find them.
This is Sarah's handwriting.
Yeah, so we know that she
did survive the plane crash.
- Yeah.
- For twenty-four hours. But,
it doesn't say anything about Jesse.
Three survivors. They were all injured.
Doesn't say who was on
the plane to begin with.
What were they doing on
a plane anyway, damn it?
Charlie, Rex has help on the way.
[HELICOPTER ROTOR]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
- What route did you take out, buddy?
- [REX BARKS]
Do you have an estimate
of their location?
RACHEL: A big estimate.
There's no rescue signal.
No flight record.
It'll be like finding
a needle in a haystack.
[FEMALE VOCALIZING]
I mean, listen, if you
would have told me forty-eight hours ago
that I'd crash a plane and
be performing surgery
You would have never
answered my voicemail.
Crystal, I'm glad I came running, okay?
I just wish I didn't have to.
How did you let it get this bad?
You really needed to rob some
guy's house? And for what?
An iPad and a Rolex?
And then it turns into us
getting almost gunned
down and shot to
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Crystal, how much money is in there?
It's a hundred thousand.
You know.
Just enough for all of my
and Nick's problems to just
go away.
SARAH: Jesse.
Jesse.
Hey! Hey hey hey! Hey,
you're going to make it! Okay?
If I don't make it,
you have to find Rex.
- Tell Charlie
- No no. You're going to tell him yourself
when we get home, okay?
That's what you're going to do.
There's no need for
last requests, Sarah.
Rex is going to come back.
[SARAH MOANS SOFTLY]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
[REX BARKS]
SIDNEY: Okay, Rex.
I think he's got something.
I think this is the area.
RACHEL: Copy. I'm
going to spin her around
and put it down in that clearing.
I'll give them the coordinates
of where we dropped you off!
But I recommend you
stay with us, Detective!
I have a sat phone!
[REX BARKING]
RACHEL: We'll start the ground
search in communication with air.
SIDNEY: Well, it's you and me!
[SOFT MUSIC]
Okay.
Okay!
Okay, I hope you know
where you're going.
[REX BARKING]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Okay.
I don't know how Detective
Hudson keeps up with you.
You have got to be kidding me.
[KNOCKING ON DOOR]
Any word?
Yeah, they've got a chopper
in the air but nothing yet.
- I should have gone.
- Why, Charlie?
So, I could have three
officers missing instead of two?
No, thank you.
I think the folks out there know
the terrain better than you do.
They don't know Rex as well.
Listen, Charlie,
if he made his way to
them from the crash site,
I'm sure he can find his way back.
Yeah.
Did you talk to that Boyle
character about your old case?
I did.
And?
He thinks I'm chasing a ghost.
[DONOVAN SIGHS]
SIDNEY: Did I tell you that
I wasn't much of a dog person?
Well, I mean
It's not that I didn't
want to be as a kid.
- I mean honestly, who doesn't want a puppy?
- [REX BARKS]
- Right?
- [REX BARKS]
Okay, right. It's my parents!
My parents were not dog people!
I don't even think they
were children people!
Okay. [PANTING] Okay!
- JESSE: Hey!
- [CRYSTAL GASPS]
- [SARAH WHISPERING]: Hey.
- Here.
- Oh my God!
- Oh, you're feverish.
SARAH: It's probably infection.
Here, get some water. Get some water.
SARAH: Oh, Jesse.
Jesse, you did good!
I'm still here.
Tell the medics to push
IV antibiotics, okay?
Thank you.
You did a damage control laparotomy.
Sarah, what if the medics
don't arrive in time?
[SARAH SIGHS]
Have faith, Jesse.
Rex will make it.
[SARAH GASPS]
- [REX BARKING]
- SIDNEY: Hey!
Rex!
Rex, yes!
SIDNEY: Hey, tell the folks
in St. John's I've found them!
- All three survivors!
- [REX BARKING]
JESSE: Good boy!
Hey!
Oh, I'm so happy to see you!
SIDNEY: Hey, folks.
Detective Sidney Scott, OPS.
- Hi!
- This is quite a dog you've got here!
- [JESSE LAUGHS]
- You must be Jesse
- and Sarah.
- Yeah.
You must be Crystal Mills.
We've been looking for you.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
DONOVAN: Jesse.
Yeah, we're okay.
They told us Sarah's been
taken to the hospital.
Yeah, Sarah's going to be okay. Look,
she had some internal
bleeding after the crash.
She made me operate.
- What?
- What the hell are you talking about?
Look, a shooter was after us, okay?
We couldn't get to the
car. There was a plane.
- So, we took it.
- Let me talk to her.
JESSE: She's in surgery.
Look, I've got to go guys.
I need to check on my sister.
Talk to you soon.
Crystal, let me tell you why
we've placed you under arrest.
Look is this really necessary right now?
I just watched my boyfriend
get shot and killed.
And I thought we were all
gonna die in a plane crash.
It's been a lot.
Around 10 am yesterday,
there was a break-in at a
residence on Lakeshore Drive.
I didn't break in anywhere.
SIDNEY: There was blood at the scene.
And tests are going to
show it belonged to Nick.
And we also have witnesses that
place you at the scene in a car.
But what I actually really want to know
is why did you and Nick
choose this specific house?
Nick picked the house.
SIDNEY: Nick picked the house.
Mmmm.
Did Nick have a problem
with Basal Mining Group?
No.
Did Nick ever mention
the name Daniel Scott?
No.
Did Nick bring the gun to the house
- with a purpose other than robbery, Crystal?
- We didn't have a gun.
SIDNEY: The weapon that he
used to murder Bianca Cooper.
I'm sorry. I'm not
feeling very well. I
Do you mind if if
we just take a minute?
Please?
Yeah, a minute.
[JESSE SIGHS]
JESSE: Crystal. What
is all this about a gun?
I don't know! I don't
know! We didn't have a gun!
Do you know what that means?
If she was shot and didn't
die of a blow to the head,
it means that Nick didn't kill anyone.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah, yeah.
You've got to get that
backpack out of here right now.
No, you need to turn it in
and tell the truth. Everything.
Not until we find out who
actually killed that woman
because if they find that first,
there's no convincing them
that Nick didn't do it.
- Come on, please.
- [JESSE SIGHS]
[CRYSTAL SIGHS]
Detective Scott!
Look, I know you need answers, okay?
She wants to cooperate; she's scared,
but I want you to know that you're
looking for a different killer.
Are you here as a cop?
Or a brother?
I have to be both.
And you need to find
out whoever the hell
was trying to kill us out there.
Okay, well we're headed
to the missile site.
We're going to gather
any evidence we can.
And we're going to try to
identify who attacked you.
You know, Rex was there.
He saw the shooter.
He might be able to help you track him.
Okay. You want to help me out, Rex?
[REX BARKS]
You know, while we're gone,
maybe you can convince your sister
to tell us why she and her
boyfriend went to the Cooper's house.
Come on, Rex.
[REX BARKS]
CHARLIE: Sarah. Good to hear your voice.
Did they catch the shooter yet?
- Not yet.
- When can you come home?
I'll be released later
today. But Charlie,
I have to see things through
with Jesse and his sister.
I get it.
Be safe.
[FINGERS TAPPING]
[CROWS CAWING]
SIDNEY: It's going to be a long ride.
We've got some time to kill.
What made you decide to become a cop?
Was it the benefits?
[REX WHINES]
I know, I know.
You really just want
to help people. I know.
You're a good boy.
How do you feel about Snoop Dog?
- [REX SNIFFING]
- Um, should he be that close to the body?
Yeah, we usually bring in K9 afterwards.
So, if forensics finds dog hair,
just tell them to eliminate it.
He was shot three times in the back.
YOUSEF: That's exactly what
the witness said we'd find.
SIDNEY: Well, someone came
looking for Crystal and Nick.
And they weren't fooling around.
[REX BARKING]
It's a cigarette butt.
You think that belongs to
the victim or the shooter?
- Let's find out.
- KAI: Yeah.
- He shouldn't be touching anything in here.
- SIDNEY: Whoa!
Hey, is that what you want us to find?
- [REX BARKS]
- YOUSEF: All right, just
There's a bag in here.
Good boy, Rex.
That's Cooper's stolen electronics!
[REX BARKS]
What?
[REX BARKS]
- That's a .38.
- Wait, Sid, you don't need to see that No!
SIDNEY: Daniel!
- Daniel!
- YOUSEF: I know.
Your husband was killed with a .38.
Every single one we've found in
the last six weeks, we've checked.
- Can we bag this?
- SIDNEY: Come on, Rex, let's go.
[JESSE SIGHS] Detective Scott
asked you why you chose that house.
- Yeah, because she's frickin' obsessed.
- She's right, Crystal.
Look
You didn't just go in there
for a random smash and grab.
You had to know what
you were looking for.
Oh yeah? And how do you figure that?
Well, it's not normal for people to
have that much money in their house.
You're acting like a narc!
What do you want me to say?
She asked you about a Daniel Scott.
I looked him up. Okay?
He was her husband.
And he was shot and
killed two months ago.
The case is still unsolved.
Jesse.
You don't think that I had
anything to do with that?
No, it doesn't matter
what I think, okay?
If she believes that you or Nick
had anything to do with
her husband's murder,
I can't protect you
from whatever comes next.
JESSE: Yeah, I don't know.
I mean, I believed Crystal
when she told me about the robbery.
But I think she knows
more than she's saying.
Surely, after everything
that's happened,
she must realize that she
needs to tell you the truth.
Yeah, I think she's just scared.
What are you doing?
Crystal told us Nick
believed Bianca Cooper died
from a blow to the head and
Detective Scott says she was shot.
Yeah, right. Well, they
can't both be right.
I want to take a look at that body.
Detective Huang? Hi. It's Sarah Truong.
I'm wondering if you can
help me with something.
SIDNEY: Rex found this
at the missile site.
That's not ours.
I've never seen that before.
All of these items, they were
stolen from the Cooper residence.
You recognize any of them?
Crystal?
No.
A .38. Same calibre of weapon that
was used to kill Bianca Cooper.
Nick didn't have a gun.
I told you that lady fell.
And she hit her head.
- You said that Rex tracked this?
- Mm-hmm.
From a cigarette butt.
We're testing it from Nick's DNA.
Well, I will save you the
trouble. Nick didn't even smoke!
I think the shooter planted this bag.
And you know this
because the dog told you?
He knows what he's doing.
He is pretty smart.
The coroner places Bianca
Cooper's time of death
between 8 am and noon.
Uh, that's right.
Which matches witness accounts
of intruders at the
house just before 10 am.
Why?
What is it you're looking for?
This.
You see it? Right in there.
A contusion under the hairline.
Crystal Mills said that her
boyfriend struggled with the victim.
- And she fell.
- [BIANCA SCREAMING]
- [LOUD CRACK]
- [NICK GASPS]
He thought that that's what killed her.
No, I'm pretty sure it was the gunshot.
Yes, but this bruise on Bianca
Cooper's head is well developed.
So, some time elapsed between
the head injury and the gunshot.
How much time?
Uh, I'd estimate two hours.
Oh, no.
No, no, no!
I assumed it was the intruders!
I've had the wrong
time of death all along.
How are you doing?
[CHARLIE SIGHS]
Stuck.
It's because you're a good cop, Charlie.
And a great detective.
Even if I can't bring her home?
That's the job.
Not everyone gets to come home.
And when that happens, we
need to know where to place it
how to continue to move forward,
how to keep ourselves
safe, so that we can be good
for the next little girl,
for the next family,
for the next person that needs us.
I don't know how to bury a ghost.
We pinned the time of
Bianca Cooper's death
to the time of the break-in.
Well, that was based on the time
that witnesses placed Crystal's
car at the Cooper house.
But if I'm right, she
was shot by someone else.
After Nick and Crystal fled the scene.
Okay, we found the electronics
and gun at Crystal's camp.
They would have been
easy enough to plant.
Right, so say the
shooter planted the gun.
SIDNEY: Can't be Tim Cooper
because he was talking to us
at the time you were attacked.
YOUSEF: Our connection between Crystal
and the Coopers is Wayne Kinney.
I'm going to go talk to him now.
SARAH: Does this clear Crystal Mills
in the matter of Bianca Cooper's death?
Well, there will be
charges for the break-in. So,
make sure she remains available.
Let's go.
KINNEY: I'm not quite sure I understand
what you're suggesting, Detective.
I'm just saying we've found a connection
between you and the suspects
in Bianca Cooper's murder.
What kind of connection?
Well, one of them worked
for the janitorial company
- that cleans your offices.
- Oh.
- It's a small town.
- Oh!
Yeah! But you've been
here your whole life!
Uh, yeah.
Except for a stint in the military.
Afghanistan.
Can you account for your
whereabouts the last couple of days?
As you can imagine, my work
takes me all over the place so
Mmm.
I'm curious.
I was under the impression that you
had a pretty good suspect already.
Well, good isn't airtight.
You know, I think Daniel,
he'd want you to enjoy
the life you have left.
And your beautiful home.
Your reputation in this community.
I think Daniel would want
you to leave this alone.
Hey?
Just take care of yourself, Sid. Hey?
Thank you again for getting me out.
Lucky thing my brother's
got pull with the cops!
Okay, it's not about pull.
Sarah and Rex found evidence.
Ah, my heroes.
- Both of you.
- Look
The evidence clears
you of murder charges
but you need to tell me about the money.
Uh, you know what?
I think I just going to
go home to my own place.
- Ahh!
- Don't!
- You can't keep it.
- Why not?
Because it's stolen.
But what if somebody
else stole it first?
Probably from some big, rich company
that can afford to lose it anyway.
It's not so wrong what I did! God!
Don't look at me like that.
Detective Scott was halfway there.
We did go to Cooper's place
because we knew the
money would be there.
How did you know?
Okay. Yeah, so,
I clean this Kinney guy's office.
Kinney was always having these hilarious
moustache-twirly phone
conversations after hours.
About what?
Okay. So
[REX MOANS]
Kinney has the contract to clean
Basal Mining's waste runoff.
- Like big money.
- Okay, all the fries.
- Yeah I get it.
- Yeah, all the fries buys you
a clean mining operation.
But lets just say you
don't clean very well.
Then it only costs
Basal would figure out pretty quickly
that their runoff wasn't
being cleaned up properly.
Oh yeah! But there's still
plenty of money left over
to keep people's mouths shut.
And Tim Cooper being the
head of local operations,
- he would be in on it too.
- He sure is!
And then he'd have to launder
the money he was stealing.
Kinney helped him out with that, too!
They talked about it.
That's how I knew there
was cash at the house.
You know, you could've just
said money laundering and fraud.
I mean, I explain these
concepts for a living.
- Yeah so you get it.
- Yeah.
Yeah! What is the harm
in keeping money that was
already stolen in the first place?
The money is evidence in
a murder investigation!
Maybe even in another one!
That's the harm, Crystal
I'm going to get out of here.
And you're going to tell them
exactly what I just told you.
- Yeah? And lose my job?
- Yeah.
- That's not how it
- [REX BARKING]
Rex?
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Rex!
- [DRAMATIC MUSIC]
- Rex, come back!
[ENGINE STARTING]
- [ENGINE REVVING]
- [REX BARKING]
Rex!
[TIRES SCREECHING]
Rex!
[REX BARKS]
[TIRES SCREECHING]
- Good boy.
- Hey! Hi!
- Don't scare us like that!
- Oh my God!
- [REX BARKING]
- Okay.
- Crystal, we're going to the cops.
- What?
- We're going to the cops!
- No!
SIDNEY: This is why you
went to the Cooper house?
How did you know there
was this much money there?
- Well, I
- Ah!
Cooper and Kinney were siphoning
off Basal's cleaning fund
and Kinney was laundering the money.
Crystal, you discovered this
while you were cleaning
Mr. Kinney's offices?
I learned that there
were regular pickups.
Pretty much the same day
of the week every time. So,
Nick and I had a good idea of when
the cash would be at the house.
You actually saw Tim Cooper
speaking with Mr. Kinney
- about the money exchange?
- Well, sometimes it was phone calls.
And sometimes Mr. Cooper
came by the office.
But we followed him one time, one time,
we followed him and that's how we
learned where Mr. Cooper's house was.
Do you know this man?
No, I never saw him.
- [REX BARKS]
- One time.
It was one time.
[JESSE SIGHS]
Rex is really disappointed in you.
[DUCKS QUACKING]
Thank you for meeting me.
You called because
you're ready to listen?
What changed?
How did the waste get into
the water at your place?
My place is on the river.
Basal Mining, they process their waste
- and they bury it in a site upstream from us.
- Mm-hmm?
The groundwater from their
burial goes into the river.
And the mine claims
that they clean the waste
- before they bury it?
- Yeah.
And their lawyers swamp me
with reports that prove it.
My husband wrote the reports.
How do you think they
could fake the results?
Well, now you're asking the
right questions, Colombo.
Why would they risk so much,
the entire business, the
liability, harm people?
People do all kinds of
things for money, Detective.
Maybe even your husband.
[BIRDS CHIRPING]
[MELANCHOLY MUSIC]
Let's take a trip.
What do you think?
- Italy?
- We can't afford it!
We just bought a new house!
- We can't afford to go on a trip.
- You forget.
[ECHOING] Your husband's
a wise investor.
Elvis was right all along.
People were getting sick.
The mine has been burying
pollution for years.
You think Daniel found out?
Then one of them killed
him to keep it quiet?
I mean they may have killed
him to keep him quiet.
But he didn't just find out.
Daniel might have been in on it.
I have been going about this all wrong.
I'm telling you, I didn't
even know my own husband.
- Are you ?
- KAI: Hey!
Uh, Tim Cooper was
at the office all day.
- His staff confirm it.
- Um
Are they sure he didn't
step out for part of the day?
Well, I'm looking at cell tower records
to see if I can confirm, but
it's going to take some time.
Okay, Wayne is ex-military.
He's absolutely our shooter.
But there is no way that Tim
Cooper didn't know about this.
I've got to make him talk.
Well, you'll need backup.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
SIDNEY: Hey.
Drink, Detective?
Yeah. Neat.
We found the electronics you
said were stolen from the house.
So, then you have enough
to arrest Bianca's killer.
Yeah, I think so. But it's funny,
we also found the money that you
said was stolen from the house.
You lied, Tim.
You had to know it was
going to come back to you.
That girl's partner broke
into my house, Sidney.
Killed my wife.
- Yeah.
- You really buy her story?
Because a jury won't.
Nick Weller didn't kill Bianca
but I believe that you
know who actually did.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
What's your play here, Sid?
Hmm?
Are you going to arrest me?
Or do you want me to cut you in?
No, what I want is for
you to you to help me catch
who actually killed Bianca and Daniel.
I'm still exposed, Sid.
Will I still go to jail for fraud?
Maybe we can help you get a deal, right?
If you give up Wayne Kinney.
He's not giving you anything.
We've come too far to go down now, Sid.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
How much do the cops know?
- Eh?
- SIDNEY: Nothing. Honestly, no.
Nobody knows. I came here alone.
Well, that was stupid.
You're still trying to
protect Daniel's reputation.
SIDNEY: I'm trying to
figure out how it is
that you actually managed
to talk him into this.
TIM: I didn't need to!
- It was his idea.
- No. No, he wasn't that way.
God, don't be so naive, Sid!
You ever take a look around
at your big, beautiful house?
- Okay, Tim, stop.
- TIM: And wonder where it all came from?
- KINNEY: Tim, stop! Stop talking!
- TIM: No, she wants to know the truth!
It's not going to make a difference!
So, if he was so in on it,
what changed? Why kill him?
Elvis Migwans spooked him, so
TIM: Daniel lost his nerve.
He threatened to go public if

SIDNEY: This is why you

Cooper and Kinney were siphoning
off Basal's cleaning fund
and Kinney was laundering the money.
Crystal, you discovered this

Mr. Kinney's offices?
I learned that there
were regular pickups.
Pretty much the same day

Nick and I had a good idea of when
the cash would be at the house.
You actually saw Tim Cooper
