RALPH ANGEL: Darla Sutton,
would you give me the privilege
of becoming your husband?

filled with joy and love.
No one really knows
your relationship but you.
Step out on faith.
I need to know if that selfless
man who was there for me,
if that's the real you.
I'm here for you, Charley.
We have to get out in the streets.
- No peace!
- It's the only way, Mom, period.
This is my gut.
Growing up, it's tough
but I'm dealing with it.
You think I'll forget the cops'

with the ideals of Marcus Garvey.
So in this case, Marley's words

It's a riff on Garvey's
"Emancipated from Mental Slavery,"
which argues that bondage
comes in several forms.
Now, the act of physical emancipation,
not even half measure.
It's a mental enslavement.
That's the real fight.
Very good, Mister, um West.
Micah West.
I'm a sophomore at Xavier University.
You're here as a part of
the intercultural course
share program, right?
Yep, that's right,
and I'm grateful to be
- at Frankford this semester.
- Of course.
Frankford is pleased to be
a part of the share.
But I do want to challenge you further
on Garvey's philosophies,
and not so much
on the mental enslavement,
but his views on the the true
freedom for the diaspora?
Well, Garvey
Garvey believed in Black
nationalism and and
And Black self-determination
by any means necessary.
So he was Malcolm X before Malcolm X?
He wasn't No, not exactly, but
It's something worth thinking about.
The history of Black
intellectuals and activists
is a rich and vital one.
Well, this is what I call
an excellent start to our discussion.
Let's leave it there
and pick it up next time.
Have a good day.

In the meantime, I get to have some fun
and listen to Maxine Waters'

And there are Saint Jo

What do you want to do?
We just have to tell the truth.
Let the chips fall where they may.
Hello.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Nova Bordelon. Thank you for coming.
But our vaccine supply

If you cannot provide proof

We'll let you know

What the hell?
Oh, man.
I heard a bunch of them jumped the line.
Folks ain't even got appointments.
Don't even live here.
I'm not leaving until they have
the last dose given.
I made an appointment weeks ago, so

And just in case, for crowd control.

Because this lady isn't from here

and there are others
who did who need these doses.
Here's the thing.
It's important that

You don't have to push yourself
too hard today, Mr. Prosper.
Anytime you want to take
a break from checking
IDs or handing out sn snack bags
Where did all these people come from?
More than I was told to expect.
Not that many folks in Saint Jo.
You got enough vaccines for these folks?
[KNOCK ON DOOR]
Hey, there. What's good, family?
Let me get a shot of y'all right quick.
Oh.
Uncle Rah, Black folks is
getting vaccinated today, man.
- That's a good reason to smile.
- Alright, alright, you right.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, I guess so.
- Ready? One, two.
- You got it.
- Three.
- Yeah.
[LAUGHTER]
Nova said you would be
looking for these.
- Appreciate that.
- What do you got there?
I'm gonna go talk up
that Farmer's lawsuit
while people wait for vaccines.
- Pretty smart.
- We'll see.
And Shemar Moore's baby brother,
you want to help us out?
We got a lot of people
waiting in cars out there.
Man, I'm happy to.
I'm just taking some photos
for a project I'm doing.
It's called "Black
Determination in a Pandemic."
- Oh, really?
- Yeah.
I'd like to see that.
Yeah? That's y'all right there.
Oh! That's nice. I like that.
Oh, what y'all say?
- That's Gucci.
- That's Gucci.
You know what?
- It's Gucci.
- Look here, man.
I'm opening up The Real Spot next week.
You know, online was cool and all,
but going live is going
to be even better.
I got a little wall space.
If you wanna put up
a picture show or something.
I mean, whenever you're ready.
You know, have your own gallery.
That would be amazing.
And yes. Yeah, let's do it.
- Let's do it.
- Shoot.
Yeah. That's great.
Let me get one more shot
of y'all right quick.
Uh, say Say "For the People."
For the People!
Bam.
Here you go.
- Have a great day, man.
- Thank you so much.
Okay, next up.
Hey, is it cool if I take your picture?
Yeah, totally.
Yo, alright, I see you there.
What's going on, brother?
I heard it ain't even a real lawsuit.
It's an administrative remedy.
It's like a lawsuit but it's quicker.
It's about getting paid, really.
- Get paid?
- Yes, sir.
From the government? Right.
I don't know, Ralph Angel.
Deadline's coming up.
I don't want you to miss out.
I don't want to waste my time
on all that paperwork
and get my hopes up either.
Just come to the Collective meeting.
They gonna have a-a-a representative
from the government there
to give out all the details.
Alright? Please?
Come on. I'll see you there.
[CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS]
Slick.
Thank you for coming.
Doctors get any word yet
on getting more vaccines
from the state health department?
They haven't heard back yet.
This isn't on you, Nova.
You're doing a good thing.
You have to know that.
Maybe, but I took the lead
in organizing this
as an example of the Black
community helping itself.
Let's get everybody together,
see what we can do.
Okay.
So far, the doctors and nurses
have given over 300 doses.
We have only 50 doses left.
And there are over
100 more cars in line.
And there are some people
from Saint Jo's Parish
with reservations
in the back of the line.
And I'm being told that the line
is backed up all the way
from Saint Joe to Saint Thomas Parish.
That's them damn vaccine chasers.
Who are all these people anyway?
My guess Saint Thomas Parish.
Problem is this drive
was targeted for Saint Jo.
For our farmers, food workers,
the elderly, those who've been
most vulnerable to the virus.
So then send those
Saint Thomas jokers home.
I mean, tell 'em straight up.
White folks who don't live here
can't just come in
and steal our vaccine.
Problem is Saint Jo is about 70% Black.
Can't look like we're turning
people away
because they're white.
Well, they better be
from Saint Jo's then.
- Yeah.
- And be able to prove it.
That's the requirement
for the shot, right?
Yes, it's just
My advisers tell me
we're on a thin line here.
After a year of pandemic life,
people are on edge.
I don't want to turn anyone away,
but we need to start holding back doses.
So what you want us to do?
Aunt Vi, maybe some more snacks
to keep them fed and calm wouldn't hurt?
I'm on it.
And everyone else, you're just
head volunteers
checking people with IDs in
and confirming reservations.
If they're not on the list,
stay calm, cool.
Say you'll need to check
with the officials first.
Any questions that get uncomfortable,
send them to the information
table up front.
We'll take it from there, okay?
- Okay.
- Alright.
Let's do it.
Just when you think the world
can't get crazier, it does.
How can the ones who have been affected
the most over this virus
be the ones to make sure
it don't even look like
we're taking care of ourselves?
Now you said a word.
How're you and Rah doing?
Y'all talked today?
Lord.
Ernest should've left me
an instruction manual
to his kids.
But he's just one of the problems.
After Ralph Angel, there's Charley.
- Well.
- Trying to get back with Davis.
Well, maybe this COVID got people
changing their outlook on things.
Whatever. And Nova.
- Oh, my God.
- Oh, God, what she do now?
Oh, what ain't she doing?
Did you read the article that she wrote
about defunding the police?
I read and I thought it was good.
Good?
Defunding the police sounds
silly as hell to me.
I think that the young people
are just saying something
that maybe we should think about.
Nova out here trying
to create heaven on Earth
when a lot of folks just trying
to survive hell
in their own house.
I know. I was battered.
Now, the police don't always
make it better.
But who is a woman in a bad situation
supposed to call when she in danger?
A social worker? Please.
Grab that.
Let's get back here
before these folks go crazy.
[HORN HONKS]
Good afternoon. Name on the reservation?
Lawrence Hoven. This is my wife, Laurel.
And how's your day been thus far?
It'll be a lot better
when I'm out of this line.
- It's been a while.
- I understand.
We're doing our best to get
everyone who is eligible
- for a shot in and out.
- Eligible?
- What's that mean?
- So, I work in healthcare.
My husband and son
have an underlying condition.
- Ain't that enough for a shot?
- We have limited supply today,
and I'm not seeing your name
on the reservation list.
We're just trying to protect
our older population.
You do understand, right?
Would you mind if I could
see your work ID?
You know what?
I was in such a rush to get here,
I must've left it in my work
locker at the clinic.
Silly me.
Are we ready to go here?
Uh, I'm sorry, but she isn't
allowed to vaccinate you
without proof of residency.
This is a joke.
[ENGINE STARTS]
Are you finding what I'm finding?
It looks like half the people in front
aren't even Saint Jo residents.
And there are Saint Jo
folks in the back.
What do you want to do?
We just have to tell the truth.
Let the chips fall where they may.
Hello.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Nova Bordelon. Thank you for coming.
But our vaccine supply
cannot accommodate everyone.
If you cannot provide proof
of residence in Saint Jo,
please exit the line.
We'll let you know
when we can do another drive,
hopefully in the near future.
Is she serious?
What the hell?
Oh, man.
I heard a bunch of them jumped the line.
Folks ain't even got appointments.
Don't even live here.
I'm not leaving until they have
the last dose given.
I made an appointment weeks ago, so
Really? Where you from?
I ain't seen you 'round these parts.
I haven't seen you either.
This is ridiculous.
Send a text to the family.
Wherever they are in the lot,
tell them to start heading
back up this way.
Okay.
He cut the line.
This is a lot.
- You okay?
- Yes. Thank you.
WOMAN: You can't take those.
- Hey, hey!
- Oh, my God.
- No, stop! Stop!
- Hey!
Get back here! I will get you!
- Who are you calling?
- The police.
The police? You're sure?
No, but we only have
a few dozen doses left.
And just in case, for crowd control.
I don't want this to unravel
without doing everything
I can to stop it from happening.
Hi, yes.
Can I get a sheriff down
to my vaccine drive?
Thank you for coming today.
If you didn't have an appointment,
I promise you we'll do this
again very soon.
- Alright.
- Stay safe.
- You, too.
- Thank you.
Miss Parthena?
Nova, I know y'all running
out of vaccine.
I got a last-minute reservation
and I rushed out
and left my license.
But I'm over 65, I'm a farmer,
I got conditions.
And I'm scared.
I been here since 7:00 a.m.
If there's anything you can do,
I would appreciate it.
Of course. Say no more.
This is Parthena Gilmore.
She's a resident and she's also
on the reservation list.
- Could you?
- No problem.
Excuse me.
Yes, ma'am? May I help you?
My aunt and I have been waiting
in this line since 6:00 a.m.
I just saw you skip this woman
to the head of the line.
- I was here first.
- I'm sorry.
Are you a resident of Saint Jo?
Don't change the subject.
Answer my question, please.
Well, if you must know, this
woman's also been here all day,
and she meets all the criteria
to be given priority status.
You didn't check her ID. I saw.
She's lived in Saint Josephine
all her life.
Or maybe you decided that only
Black people can get vaccinated today.
That's absurd.
I see what's going on here
and I won't stand for it.
It's reverse racism.
You must be out of your mind.
We can all vouch that Parthena has been
a longtime resident of Saint Jo
and has a right to the vaccine.
- Like I'll just take your word for it.
- You can.
Sheriff Guidry, thank you
so much for coming.
- We just were trying to res
- Alright, alright.
Everybody just calm down.
She didn't have to show me
proof of residency.
She's lived here her whole life.
And you know that, Harold.
I tell you what.
It sounds like Miss Katherine
here was here before you were, Parthena.
So why can't y'all just
give them both a shot?
Because this lady isn't from here
and didn't make a reservation,
and there are others
who did who need these doses.
Here's the thing.
It's important that
everything looks fair.
Without bias. Don't you think?
Parthena, why don't you run home
and get your identification
and then you can come back later
and get your shot.
Sounds fair?
Give me your keys. Here, Hollywood.
I'm going to take you home
to get your license
and I'll meet you back at the house.
You ought to be ashamed
of yourself, Sheriff.
You ought to stop trying
to ruining cops' lives
- before you ruin your own.
- What's that supposed to mean?
It means you got a big mouth.
Defund the police?
Over my dead body.
I called you here to keep the peace.
That's what I'm doing.
You're lucky I don't cite you
for all these
extra cars around here.
It exceeds your use permit.
You got it?
Thank you, Vi.
I don't know what I would've
done without you today.
I've never felt so disrespected.
All they want to do is take
our guns, destroy this country.
I know. We can't worry about that.
We just got to keep lifting
each other up.
No matter what happens.
If we do that, I promise
we can't lose in the end.
We'll get you this together.
I saw you try to move this woman
to the front of the line,
and they are running out of vaccine.
I won't have it.
Look, I just got out of line
to go to the bathroom.
I was here before.
That's what I was trying to tell her,
but she swears we are up to something.
I have been watching you all day.
Skipping over us, looking at us
like we don't belong here.
- Well, do you?
- Do you belong here?
This is a small town, and I
don't remember seeing you here.
I have as much right to be here
as anybody else in this line.
So what you say is that
she doesn't have a right to
Sir. You need to lower your voice.
What? Excuse me, young officer,
but I'm trying to explain
something to this lady.
Now, maybe maybe you should
find out what happened first
before you start to assume
to tell me to lower my voice.
- Right.
- Hey, he's just doing his job.
- He's just doing his job.
- Man, just back off!
- Back off me, man.
- Step over here.
Look, I'm sick and tired of this crap,
so don't put your hands on me,
you understand?
- You need to relax.
- Don't tell me to relax.
- That's it. That's it.
- Hey!
Mr. Prosper!
What did you do? What did you do?
This is what you call keeping the peace?
Somebody call Somebody call somebody!
Somebody call an ambulance!
- He's dead.
- Get help, please!
- Prosper, stay with us,
- Need medical units to a vaccine drive.
Stay with us. Call for help!
WOMAN: Go, Ree Ree.
