Nashville s06e02 Episode Script

Second Chances

1 Previously on "Nashville" Juliette Barnes went after concertgoers Nobody likes you! Excuse me.
You know we're trying to put on a show here.
What is going on? I struggle with depression.
And I'm putting my tour on hold.
What do you want from me? I want to help you change your life.
How am I supposed to do this by myself? Just imagine I'm up there with you.
How's La-La-Land? I almost did something real stupid.
- Say, you getting a tattoo? - No, worse.
You take good care of yourself, Deacon.
You too, Jess.
Oh, thank you very much.
Appreciate it.
- Oh, we should get some of - Nope.
What time is your show tonight? - You coming? - You kidding me? It's a small show and really rough set.
Oh, come on, please.
Hey, as your uncle, your head of your label, your biggest fan, yes, I'm going to your show tonight.
You're sweet.
Thank you.
Ugh.
What are we doing? - Oh, was that Gunnar? - Yep.
- You just gonna stare at that zucchini? - Stare at this zucchini.
I'd appreciate it if you did too, there you go.
That rough, huh? Yeah, well, we tried talking.
That didn't work.
So now we're not talking.
And I don't know what the etiquette is for public run-ins.
And here we are.
Well, he's gone.
Can we stop doing this? Yes.
Oh! - Hey! - Hi! Hi.
We keep bumping into people here.
It's been forever.
Yes, totally.
Hi.
Nice to see you.
You, too.
I didn't expect it to be so long since we saw each other.
Yeah.
Well, you know, time flies when you're raising kids, right? - It does, right? Yeah.
- Yeah.
Well, speaking of kids, I gotta go pick up mine from soccer practice, so Oh, all right.
Tell 'em good luck.
I, well, it's practice, but - Oh, no, well - I will.
[LAUGHS.]
- Okay.
Thank you.
- Good seeing you.
- All right.
- All right.
- Bye, Scarlett.
- Take care.
Bye.
You've got to call her.
What are you talking about? Don't hide your feelings.
This from a woman that's hiding behind an eggplant! - Zucchini.
- Whatever.
- That's completely different.
- How's that different? Because Gunnar and I ran our course and y'all chickened out at the starting gate.
- I didn't chicken out.
- You did.
No.
Oh.
Hey, buddy, what's up? Oh, I saw Scarlett at the market and she avoided me.
Or I guess it's remotely possible she never saw me in the first place.
Anyway, I should probably not get so worked up about it.
What do you think? I think you're right.
What, that she saw me or she didn't? That you're obsessing.
Look, you two are on different paths now, okay? And part of that is getting used to the idea that you can't be worried about what the other person is thinking and feeling at all times.
Yeah.
You're right.
Hey, you still got that gig on Thursday? Yeah.
What about it? I was just wondering if you wanted me to play with you again.
Oh.
Well, look, man.
I really appreciate you bailing me out the other night.
I mean, I really do, but I'm okay.
And I got to learn to do it by myself at some point, right? Well, yeah, sure.
For the record, I wasn't offering because I was worried about you.
- Yeah, you were.
- No, I wasn't.
Well, then why? Because it was fun.
Fun? Yeah, it was fun! You heard of it? I haven't felt that free on stage in a long time.
So what could be more fun than playing with your best friend? Avery? No.
I was talking No, I'm kidding man, yeah.
It was pretty fun.
- [LAUGHS.]
- It was.
- Thank you.
- Mm-hmm.
Mmm.
What's up? Nothing.
Why are staring at me while I eat? I'm not.
I just, I got a name for someone today, someone that I thought maybe you could talk to.
Like a shrink? Yeah, and I know your opinion of that profession.
So before you get mad at me, - I'm just worried about you.
- I'm not mad.
I'm not.
I know I need help.
And it just so happens I have a plan for that.
- Really? - Mm-hmm.
I'm gonna go see Darius Enright tomorrow and see what his whole thing's about.
Oh.
What? Nothing, nothing.
I guess I just thought you were talking about seeing a doctor.
He is a doctor.
I mean, a medical one.
Thank you.
Darius has written four bestselling books that have been translated into over 60 different languages.
How many books has your doctor written? I don't know.
See? Look, I understand you're asking me to get help.
And I'm telling you calmly that's exactly what I'm doing.
Just in my own way.
What more do you want from me? [SIGHS.]
[CELL PHONE RINGS.]
- Twice in one day, huh? - [LAUGHS.]
Guilty as charged.
And to what do I owe this honor? Well, um, I just, you know, when I ran into you today, I just thought it's been a while, you know.
- Uh-huh.
- And, uh even though it's been a long time, I just I don't know.
I thought maybe, you know, it was a sign.
Or you know, maybe I was wrong.
Maybe you and I You know, or not.
I mean No, no.
I'm just surprised, I guess.
Uh, if it's not No, no.
Um That that, uh, sounds lovely.
It's just, um Are you sure? Yeah, uh, yeah.
Why? Oh, gosh, this is tough.
I can take it.
I don't know.
It just seems like not that long ago when you weren't ready, so Well, if I recall, you weren't exactly ready to rush into anything either.
Yeah, that's that's true.
So I guess I thought, you know, that was then.
This is now, so Okay, yeah.
What Yeah? Yes.
Let's, uh Yeah.
Okay.
Looking for the woman in this girl Ain't no normal in this world Always hard to find the path your feet should follow It's enough to leave you emptied out and hollow And they tell you here's the truth you need to swallow Then they put you on a tilt-a-whirl There ain't no normal in this world Oh, you can pray for the waves to die Or just decide to ride the curl There ain't no normal in this world [APPLAUSE.]
[HEAVY BREATHING.]
Wow.
Gym again? Oh, you think this work of art maintains itself? I don't know, man.
Just seems like every time I turn around these days, you're either on your way there or on your way back.
That's the thing about exercise.
You're kind of supposed to do it every day.
Really? I don't know how you do it.
I gotta take my shirt off for a photoshoot next week.
That's motivation enough.
Woo! Can I come? You can shave my back.
I'm good.
So happy to have you back, Ms.
Barnes.
Oh, well, I'm so happy to be sitting here waiting.
- Hmm.
- So, is Darius available? I don't have that much more time.
Unfortunately, Darius has an extremely demanding schedule that has him on the road most days.
Yep.
But he asked that I give you a personalized introduction to what we do here.
Will that be okay? Sure.
Intentional communities like ours now exist in 29 cities around the world.
Intentional? It's just like-minded people who've decided that the workshops, transformative though they are, weren't enough.
So here, we're able to support each other year-round as we strive to be our best selves.
How exactly do you do that? Well, most days it's like living anywhere else.
We go to our jobs or schools during the day.
But in the evening, we do things together.
Like meditate, cook, and we give more of ourselves, much more than we ever realized possible, to other people.
How much more? 30% of our income.
And at least one day per week of good work.
So today, a group of us are going to be lending our hand to an affordable housing project just outside the city.
Would you like to join us? I I thought I was gonna come here to talk to Darius.
I am not dressed for it and I've got an appointment in the city.
These are all really lame excuses, aren't they? Maddie-boo.
So hungry.
There better still be leftovers.
- There are.
- Thank God.
What's up with you? I'm just trying to find a place to eat.
You know, good food, nothing fancy.
A place where you can talk without a whole lot of noise.
Like a date spot? No, not a date spot.
Just dinner spot.
Who's the lucky lady? Tell you what.
If it turns out to be halfway anything, I'll let you know then, okay? Well, if you throw in $40 bucks, I will forget to tell Daphne maybe.
- You're terrible.
- [CELL PHONE RINGS.]
Well, that looks like that must be from that Jonah what's-his-name.
What? I can't read you back? It's just so confusing.
What's confusing? Yesterday we had this awesome time together, - like really awesome.
- Mm-hmm.
And now he's taking like hours to respond to my text.
Can I see it? You're not maybe making too much of it if it's just hours? No.
Look.
I texted him at 11 last night.
He doesn't even reply till noon today.
He doesn't even ask questions.
He's not even trying to like engage in a conversation.
These are all signals that you look for when you're texting someone.
- They are? - Yes.
[MADDIE SIGHS.]
Hi, family! - Hey.
- Hello.
Hey, you know a good restaurant somewhere in town? Like downtown maybe? Germantown or something? You took my advice.
I'm so proud of you.
I'm not taking advice, all right? Please, I'm just trying to find a place - to eat some dinner, that's all.
- [CHUCKLES.]
- Okay, grouchy.
- I'm not - I'll talk to you in a bit.
- I love you, baby.
I love you.
Hey, what was going on with you last night? Seemed like something was off after the show.
Oh, I don't know, I just I felt his absence.
Look, I'm sure it must be weird up there by yourself.
But, believe me, it'll get better with time.
Yeah.
It's not that I'm not okay without Gunnar.
Because I actually am.
It's just without him up there, I'm kind of starting to wonder why I'm doing it, you know? No, actually, I don't follow.
The performance, the lights, crowds, tension, all that.
It was his dream.
It was never mine.
And now it's just me up there.
I kind of don't really know if it's what I want.
Listen to me.
All that stuff, Gunnar might have coaxed it outta you.
But that is you.
That is your talent.
That is all you, okay? Thank you.
- I don't know.
- Yeah, well, I do know.
Your songs, they say something.
And that'd just I'm sorry.
I think it'd be a shame if, you know, they didn't have an audience.
Thanks.
Speaking of which, somebody just asked me if you would like to take part in a guitar pull.
Maybe it'd be a good way for you to sort of, you know, remember the fun of it.
I'll think about it? You think about it.
I'll think about it while you're on your date.
So what kind of experience do you have on a worksite? [CHUCKLES.]
None.
All right, then we will start you out with something simple.
All right.
All these walls have to be insulated before we can seal them up.
All right? That's where you come in.
Yeah, that's right.
Oh, no.
This, I'm pretty sure, is a hazard.
You leave this in my hands, somebody's gonna get hurt.
It's perfectly safe, all right? Just watch out you don't touch the fiberglass with your bare skin, all right? Leaves a nasty rash.
- You know I can't really do this, right? - Why not? Well, I got into an accident a year ago.
- I shouldn't - And you made a remarkable recovery.
You're pretty strong when you put your mind to it.
Thank you.
I am.
But this thing's the size of my head and this really isn't my kind of task.
You know, I actually think this is the exact kind of task you need.
I'll come check in on you later.
Here you go.
I've watched you watch me dance And tip-toe all around it Love makes one cautious When you think you finally found it Wore out both my sleeves Till my heart showed completely You've got me right where you want me There's no use even Finishing this conversation Kiss me till I can't breathe There's no negotiation This deal is done, you won You got your hands full, honey You've got me right where you want me You've got me right where you want me [CHEERING.]
I love you! - Thank you! - I love you! Thank you.
- I love you! I love you.
- Oh, hey.
Which one of us you think she's talking to? I'm pretty sure she's talking to you, man.
Hey, which one of us you talking to? You! [LAUGHS.]
Honey, you are beautiful.
But you know you're not my type, right? Now this guy, however - No, no, no.
- Yes.
One of the saddest human beings I've ever known.
He is so lonely and available! - Please take him! - I'll take him! - [CHEERING.]
- All right.
- Thank you, thank you.
- Sold to the highest bidder! - To you guys, cheers.
- Cheers, man.
Honestly, though, what did you think? Honestly, I think you guys were having a little too much fun.
- Yeah.
- Wait, what does that mean? It means I'm jealous.
You guys are having a blast up there.
Well, so join us next time, man.
Come play with us.
Aw, I wish, but I can't.
Why not? Well, first of all, haven't we already been down that road? And, besides, man, I got my own band to worry about now.
Well, no one's telling you to give up your own thing.
It could be like a like a side project.
Raconteurs.
- Or the Highwaymen.
- Yeah.
Look, I would, but Juliette's in a weird place right now.
So I'm double duty with Cadence.
And it's just it's not a good time.
Well, seems like all that stress is exactly why you need to come play with us.
Well, maybe when you have a kid and an ex-wife wife - Baby mama? - Yeah, whatever.
Maybe then you'll understand.
All right.
End of discussion.
For now.
[POUNDING.]
Ow! Oh! Everything okay? Does it look like it? There's ice in the cooler.
Oh! Can you get me some? It's in the van.
Excuse me? Juliette, nobody's making you stay here.
But so long as you're here, you'll be treated like everybody else.
I got news for you.
I'm not like everyone else.
I'm leaving.
When people hand us things, we grow weak.
When they refuse us, we rise to the challenge.
Darius says that a lot.
These things we do, this good work, is not really just about giving back.
It's also about moving away from victimhood and realizing your own power.
Stay or go.
It's your choice.
[SCHOOL BELL RINGS.]
Hey, did you understand anything in algebra? Not a single word.
Okay, I'm definitely calling you about it later then.
There's Jake.
He is so weird.
What is he even doing? I don't know.
Whatever.
- You came! - Hey! - I said I would, didn't I? [LAUGHS.]
- I know.
It's just, um it's really hard for me to understand how you're like this famous person.
But you're also like my friend.
Come on.
- Is this one yours? - Yep.
Oh, my goodness.
I'm so proud of you.
It's great.
Don't be.
It's just a student show.
They pick one of each of our paintings so no one's feelings get hurt.
Come on, baby, it's a masterpiece.
I love it.
- Hi.
- Mom, this is Scarlett.
Scarlett, this is my mom, Jennifer.
So nice to meet you.
Well, Nadi here never shuts up about you.
You meant a lot to me.
I mean, even when I thought I was alone I never really was 'cause I had your music.
It helped me through a really tough time.
I feel a lot better now.
- I'm so glad.
- Thank you.
Thank you.
[CELL PHONE RINGS.]
Hold on just a second, okay? I'll be right back.
- Okay.
- Hey.
We don't got to eat there.
We can go anywhere you want.
No, no, no.
That's not it.
It's just, um You can't make me! My son is having a bit of a meltdown right now.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Everything okay? Yeah, yeah.
It's just, you know, one of those "I'm gonna die if you make me go to one more day of eighth grade" kind of deal.
I been there.
Yeah.
Well, par for the course, but You just don't think you should go out to dinner tonight.
Yeah, I just kind of feel like with everything going on maybe I don't know.
No, I understand, listen.
Hey, kids come first.
Yeah, even when you want to strangle them.
[CHUCKLES.]
Anyway, um I'm really sorry.
No, no, no, no.
No, please, we'll just do it another time.
- Maybe when they turn 18.
- [LAUGHS.]
Hopefully, a little before then, but yeah.
- Okay.
Take care.
- All right.
Bye.
Nice work, especially with such a crummy task.
I knew you were hazing me! - Yeah.
I was betting against you.
- Bad idea.
Watch out, now.
She can use a staple gun too.
Woo! We're all getting dinner back at the center.
You should join us.
I'd love to.
"He was tired of playing by himself - and he wanted to play with" - [PHONE RINGS.]
Oh.
[GASPS.]
Who's that? Mom.
Yeah, it's Mom.
Hey, baby.
We're just doing our bedtime stories.
Oh, hi, baby girl.
I miss you.
I love you.
Love you.
We love you, too.
What time you getting home? Well, you know, it just got so late here, I ended up just sending Bo home.
Juliette, where are you gonna stay? Don't worry about it, they've got a million rooms here.
Okay.
I had a great day, okay? That is it.
They are good people.
And I felt better than I have felt in, I don't even know how long.
So please don't ruin this.
Okay.
- All right, bye.
- Bye.
All right.
Got your lunch and your backpack? - 10-4, boss.
- Okay.
[CELL PHONE RINGS.]
I gotta take this.
You be ready to go in five minutes, okay? I'll be ready.
Will you be ready? Very funny.
[CELL PHONE RINGS.]
- Hey.
- Hey.
So, um I, uh just wanted to call and apologize for yesterday.
What do you have to be sorry for? Well, there was a lot of stuff going on.
I didn't make any of that up.
But, um, well, I kind of feel like there's always a lot going on.
And the truth is, I was just nervous.
Nervous, huh? Yeah.
I don't know.
It just feels like everything's super heightened right now and we're like walking on some kind of a minefield.
You know, it could just may be like it's just dinner, you know.
Just two people sharing a meal? Hmm, yeah.
I think I've heard of that before.
[CHUCKLES.]
Yeah, totally.
It could just be dinner.
It's dinner.
Okay, okay.
Well, let's Let's do that then.
Okay, all right.
I feel like I should pretend I got a whole bunch of plans this week.
[CHUCKLES.]
Yeah, me too.
I could potentially look in my calendar and see if I maybe have like an hour next Thursday or So tonight? Yeah, tonight sounds great.
All right, tonight.
What is this stuff? Salad? I miss when cafeterias were allowed to be unhealthy.
I'll be right back.
- Hey.
- Hey.
You can come sit at our table if you want.
Do I look like some Make-a-Wish kid? Yeah, no, you do.
Just a little funnier-looking.
Wouldn't it have been super awkward if our parents had actually dated? Yes.
Like those two getting it on? Ew! That is disgusting! Yeah, I know.
- Oh, hey.
- Hey.
Hey.
Don't you look all nice and smart and stuff.
Well, that's funny 'cause I feel stupid.
You don't look stupid.
I'm just saying I think she'll appreciate it.
Please, dear God, tell me you're not here to give me a pep talk.
- I'm not here to give you a pep talk.
- Good.
You give any more thought about that guitar pull? Yeah, lots.
I don't know if my head's any clearer, but What are you thinking? I'm thinking that music has given me this platform that I can use to help people.
So it would be selfish for me to be worried so much about whether I enjoy myself all the time or not.
Look, there's no job that everybody loves all the time.
But it's not selfish to want to love what you do.
Thanks.
Look, they said this thing tonight, it's super informal.
Swing by if you can.
If you don't want to go, don't go.
- Just figure it out as you go.
- Okay.
- Is this jacket too much? - Little bit.
Yeah.
[CHUCKLES.]
Here you go, girl.
[DOORBELL RINGS.]
Are you expecting company, hmm? Hey, guys.
What what What are you doing here? Avery, listen to me.
This is very important.
- What? What is it? - It's an intervention.
An intervention? What are you guys talking about? Who needs help? Wait, me? Yep.
You're way too mopey.
And we're gonna do something about it.
I'm not mopey.
You're mopey.
What are you doing, man? Thought you said you're good at that.
I am good at this.
I just just give me a second.
All right, we're gonna be late.
Just Just get him.
Get him? I'm not going anywhere.
- What No, I'm not.
- Yes, you are, and no excuses! - You're coming with us! - I'm not going anywhere.
We even got a babysitter for this little munchkin.
- Really? - Thought of everything.
Woo-hoo-hoo! Look at this line to park! Okay, this is this is the last time I'm gonna ask.
What are we doing here? It's a surprise.
That's not an answer.
See, Ave, the nature of a surprise is that you ruin it if you tell the person.
- I'm gonna kill you guys.
- Right.
Would you just quit being an adult? I am an adult.
You're an adult.
We're all adults here, supposedly.
Hey.
Oh, hi.
Appreciate you meeting me up here.
Work got a little crazy.
Oh, no, don't worry about it.
I ended up taking an Uber.
- So - Cool.
- Shall we? - Oh, sure, okay.
Thank you.
- Hi.
We're here.
- Hey.
Great.
So right now, I have something at the bar.
Or you can wait like 30 minutes for a table.
Uh, you want to wait? What do you want to do? I don't know.
What are you thinking? I'm fine either way.
Are you hungry? Yeah, I could eat or I could wait.
I mean - So Bar? - Yeah.
- Let's sit at the bar.
- Bar.
Great.
Right this way.
Okay.
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen of the Basement East.
Thank you all for making it out tonight.
You said you were gonna show up.
- You did show up - Ms.
O'Connor.
- Hi.
- We're so happy you could make it.
We're gonna call the musicians onstage one by one.
And this is The Amazing Ryan.
You'll be right after him.
Thanks.
We've got Ashley McBride.
[CHEERING.]
A gig? Seriously? - Our gig.
- [CADENCE LAUGHS.]
Wait.
What? It's like you guys didn't even listen when we talked about this.
No, we heard you, we just chose to ignore - whatever you had to say.
- [AVERY SIGHS.]
Avery, this is Beth.
She's a fantastic babysitter.
- Hi.
- Hi.
Hi, Cadence.
Hey, hey, it's cool.
She got great reviews on Yelp.
[SIGHS.]
So eventually I just said to myself, "Jessie, you're 36.
Your career's not taking off and that's not likely to change.
And it also doesn't really mesh well with being a parent.
So maybe it's just time to try something new.
" - Wow.
- Yeah.
So I've been taking some psychology classes online and I actually think that I'm gonna go back to school for it.
And giving up the music? Yeah.
That's what I'm saying.
No, yeah, I know, I know.
I'm just It's That's exciting.
That's, you know Yeah.
So how are you? Are you writing and playing? You know, not a lot.
Not as much as I'd like.
It's hard to find the time sometimes.
Well, you got to make the time.
- It's too important not to.
- Yeah, you're right.
I do.
- Yeah.
- I should.
[LAUGHS.]
What? Is everything okay with you? Yeah.
- Why? - I don't know.
What? Everything all right with you? - Are you okay? - Yeah, I'm fine.
I just feel like you're not really here or something.
[LAUGHS.]
- I'm here.
- No.
I mean, I'm feeling a little self-conscious, - now that you say that, but - Oh.
Oh, I'm sorry.
It's my fault.
No, it's not your fault.
I'm just saying maybe you're feeling a little weird or something.
So you're thinking that I am.
Oh, oh, okay.
So I'm projecting.
Not the word I'd use.
- Oh, no? - No.
No.
I'm not taking the psychology class, so maybe that's - I'm just joking.
It's a joke.
- No, I know, I know.
I knew this would happen.
What would happen? That it would just ruin our friendship.
This isn't ruining our friendship, Jessie.
Our friendship is fine, okay? - No, our friendship is far from fine.
- Oh, come on now.
If our friendship was fine, you would have given me all kinds of crap for quitting singing.
And then you would tell me a story about how your girls give you a million distractions from music but you love them to pieces anyway.
And we would just be, you know, talking instead of just sitting here - trying.
- I'm sorry, okay? I've been I've been looking forward to this a lot, okay? And I don't know.
Now that I'm here and you're right there, I don't Maybe I'm a little overwhelmed.
You know? Well, I'm really overwhelmed.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
- Well - But you were the one that said that this could just be dinner, so Yeah.
I mean, I did.
I was wrong, I guess.
I mean sometimes I guess dinner isn't just dinner.
- I'm sorry.
- Okay.
Yeah.
Thank you.
So you just want to just go back to being friends? - Yeah, okay, sure, yeah.
- Okay.
Okay, quick question.
What are we playing? - That is a good question.
- Yeah.
You guys know "Something More Than Free"? No.
What about "Whiskey and You"? Yeah, I know that one.
- Yeah? - Shoot, I don't know that.
Uh I got it.
Ladies and gents! They have informed me they don't have a name.
But you may recognize them individually.
So give it up for Gunnar Scott, Will Lexington and Avery Barkley.
- Come on! - [APPLAUSE.]
Hey, that's lame! Come on! Come on! - [CHEERING.]
- Yeah! Yeah! You know, we're still all getting our, uh, our feet wet together here.
So we're just gonna play y'all the hits.

- Did you see? - Okay, okay.
Woo! Yeah? All right? Woo! [TRAIN WHISTLE BLOWS.]
Well, that was a Fun, failed experiment.
[CHUCKLES.]
Yeah.
Guess to know it doesn't work, you gotta give it a try, right? Yeah, good point.
Yeah.
- All right.
Goodnight.
- Goodnight.
Coffee's on the counter.
[WILL GRUNTS.]
Hey, buddy, you want in on some of these pancakes? Oh, pancakes, yeah.
We are not in our early 20s anymore.
Yeah, I can manage exactly one night like that a year.
I was thinking more like once a week.
What do you mean? Just admit it, Ave.
You had fun.
Come on, you did.
Okay, maybe I had a little fun.
Well, then we should do this.
Yeah.
You saw how that audience reacted.
We got to.
You're talking about like a super group? We're just making music and having fun.
That's what we do.
Hey.
We're a band.
We share everything.
[SIGHS.]
[CADENCE LAUGHS.]
- [KNOCKING ON DOOR.]
- Yes? Come in.
Come in.
Just wanted to say hi briefly before I go.
I'm sorry we didn't get to spend much time together during your stay.
But I thought it might be instructive.
Instructive how? Unlearning traps of instant gratification, dealing with disappointment.
I don't like mind games.
I understand that.
Do you feel like maybe you, I don't know, learned something? Did you feel present? In control? I did, yeah.
Can I just ask then what are you returning to? My family, for one.
My career.
People so close to you, they're invested in you staying exactly the way you are.
What does that mean? It means there's a dynamic.
You feel compelled to dominate every interaction and the people around you are more than happy to genuflect and submit.
I don't have to act that way.
No, you don't.
But it's hard to break old habits in old environments.
One needs distance, structure.
So you're saying that I shouldn't leave.
I'm saying be mindful.
Am I falling back into my old ways? Am I truly happy here and now? That's all.
- Hey.
- Hi.
You know, if you don't want to talk, - I can keep shopping or - That's okay.
It's been too long.
Feels weird.
Yeah.
I can't remember the last time I didn't know what was going on in your life.
I know.
Well, you first.
What's new? Well, I been playing out with the guys a bit, Will and Avery.
Oh, really? I mean, I don't know if it's gonna be a real thing, but I think it's great.
You do? Yeah.
I'm happy you found something that's right for you.
Well, what about you? You been playing? A little bit.
Thinking about taking a break from it all just for a minute.
Oh.
What? Oh, nothing.
It's just You got the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.
And I'd hate to think you're not singing.
Thanks.
It just, it's started to feel like an obligation.
Like something I had to do to help people like Nadine.
- You remember that girl? - Yeah.
Yeah, I had this moment where I realized it wasn't just my music that helped people.
It was me and stuff that I decided to do.
And it made me think that, for every person who says a song changed their life, there's like a thousand more people who just change the radio station.
So I wanted to do something more direct.
Get some dirt under my fingernails.
It's just where my heart is at right now.
Well, then I'm really happy for you too, honestly.
Thank you.
It's good to see you.
You, too.
All right, kiddo.
Ace that test.
Don't jinx it.
[CHUCKLES.]
Sorry.
Fail it.
- Much better.
Thank you.
- Love you, too.
- Morning.
- Hi.
Hey, guys.
- Hey.
- Hey.
Long time, no see.
Yeah, totally.
[CHUCKLES.]
- Hey, Daphne.
- Hi.
How you feeling about algebra? - Fine, thank you.
- Mmm.
Good.
We should catch up sometime.
- [CAR HORN HONKS.]
- Yeah, totally.
Oh, well, that's my cue to go, I guess.
Please, miss, you're blocking the traffic.
[LAUGH.]
All right, I'll see you later.
Break a leg, honey.
Yeah.
Whatever.
[CELL PHONE CHIMES.]
[CAR HORN HONKS.]
Oh, sorry! [TV ANNOUNCER.]
He shoots, he scores! You're back.
Yeah.
So how'd it go?
