Help! My House Is Haunted (2018) s06e03 Episode Script
Footprints of the Past
You are not welcome.
I want you to go.
Help me, help me, please.
Across the UK
Woah.
What the..?
Did you hear that?
Oh my God!
..terrified homeowners
are being plagued by the paranormal.
I can see you.
I am scared to death.
I need to know, am I safe?
Thankfully,
there are three people
What was that?
I've got goosebumps.
No, I'm not going to get out.
Oh my God, Ian, don't leave me.
..who will stop at nothing
Someone's behind me.
Who's here with us?
Ahh!
What the hell was that?
..to return our homes
Can you just take the emotion
away from Jayne, please?
Two spirit forms.
Barri, you're scaring me.
Right next to you.
..back to the land of the living.
This is like
a horror movie, isn't it?
Guys, I feel quite relaxed,
surprisingly, about today.
Do you?
Mmm.
I always worry
about a false sense of security
when we feel OK going to a place,
'cause you never know, do you?
In this investigation
What the shit's that coming from?
Where's that coming from?
It's coming out of their speaker.
Oh my God.
Where?
..a woman terrified
of her own home
A voice shouted back at me, "Stop!"
..tales of mysterious footprints
We came back that afternoon
and there was a little child's
footprint in there.
Wow!
..and menacing footsteps.
Is anyone there?
Oh my God,
there's nobody on the stairs.
Emotions run high for the team
Ah!
There you go.
Oh no!
There you go.
..as they get a picture of the past.
Oh! Oh my God!
When there's loads of history,
Ian, is that harder for you,
or is it easier
to kind of connect with spirit?
I think it's harder, Barri,
because there's going to be
so many things
coming through at once,
and it kind of,
like, overloads my mind.
Although Barri and Jayne
have seen case notes,
medium Ian relies solely
on his psychic abilities.
I am sensing a man.
I do feel that we'll be greeted
with a gentleman there.
I just see him stood
in this massive room.
Our experts have been called in
to investigate
this 15th century property,
which is home
to Jill and partner Steve.
I just want to know who's here
in this property.
They have got to stop scaring me.
It is getting beyond a joke now.
We have lived here
for almost two years now.
After we moved in,
we spoke to our neighbours
who then informed us
that the property was very haunted.
This really scared me.
After a few months of living here,
we started to hear footsteps
at night,
as we were sleeping in bed,
like they're coming up the stairs,
and you almost expected to see
somebody walk into the room.
And Steve would be, "Oh no,
it's an old house, you know,
"you're gonna get
creaks and groans,"
but Steve would go back to sleep
and I'd lie there
all night awake, petrified.
Our smart speaker decided to play
'Ring a Ring o' Roses'
at two o'clock in the morning.
That absolutely
freaked the life out of me.
It was like something
out of a horror film.
The speaker,
over the next few months,
kept playing 'Ring o' Roses'
and another very strange
folky, sort of mystical song,
again, that we'd never asked
the speaker to play, ever.
One night I got up,
stood at the top of the stairs
and said, "Stop," and a voice
shouted back at me, "Stop!"
I was petrified.
Some nights I literally feel
like I'm going mad,
because I can hear whispering.
I literally was sat
in the front room watching TV
the other night
and something touched me
on the back of my head.
Now I'm starting to think,
"Well, this, whatever it is here,
is actually getting physical now,"
and it's got to the point
where I am actually quite fearful.
I really want the team to clarify
that there is something there,
and prove to Steve that
what I'm saying is believable.
Steve says he won't believe
in any paranormal activity
until he actually
sees a spirit in full,
but I feel like we've had
so much evidence,
how can you not believe
that this house isn't haunted?
Right, this is it.
Oh, that's it.
This?
This is the property here.
While Barri and Jayne head off
to research further into the case,
Ian's going to see what
and who he can psychically pick up.
Hello?
It's really, really funny,
because I am drawn to my left,
and I was aware of a gentleman
on my journey here to this house,
now, he's showing me
this big space,
this open space, so I'm wondering
if the middle part of this house
was potentially a hall
or a bigger area than this.
Maldon dates back
to the 10th century,
and I've come to quite
an unusual location
to find out more from former mayor
and author Stephen Nunn.
Stephen, thank you for meeting me.
Why are we meeting in court,
first of all?
Well, we're here because
this is one of the town's
most important historical buildings,
and it was built in 1420
as a private house,
and then in the 16th century,
this became the town hall.
Well, you know the building
that we're interested in, Stephen,
and you know
a little bit about it, don't you?
What can you tell me?
So it's a Grade II listed building.
Originally, it was part
of a much larger building,
a 15th, 16th century hall.
So in the middle was an open hall,
and then you had
two wings either side,
and the property
that you're looking at
was one of those wings,
and the wing was probably
sleeping accommodation.
In the 19th century,
the building was re-fronted
and it was divided
into three properties,
and we know about
some of the families
that were in those three properties
in the 19th century.
We've got a coach builder,
we've got a grocer,
we've got widows,
all sorts of different characters
that make up the story
of the building.
Where's that clock coming from?
That's really, really strange.
There is a clock
in this little hallway,
but it's, I can't hear it now,
but when I was sat down,
it was really clear.
It's almost as if this man I see
Time must have been
important to him.
And I see him
working with his hands.
So was he a woodworker,
or did he build something?
Hello?
Guys, did you hear that?
Did you hear..?
I could hear a child's voice.
Hello?
There were clearly a child's voice,
but it definitely
came from upstairs.
To get a better understanding
of the problem,
I'm meeting Jill's partner Steve,
who also lives in the property.
So, this might be a silly question,
but do you believe
in spirits, ghosts?
I don't really believe
in ghosts myself,
but since we've been there,
there's some
strange things happening.
Can you tell me
what's been going on?
We went out a little while ago
and, um, I took my keys with me,
came home,
put them on the table.
Couldn't find them anywhere.
We looked in the drawers,
jacket pockets, everywhere.
Went out, got another key cut.
Came back home, they were
sitting on the kitchen floor.
And you'd looked there?
Yeah, looked there.
I mean, you couldn't miss them.
It was just
in the centre of the floor.
I personally think it's a child,
because when we first moved in,
on the second floor,
there's a step up
that goes into the bathroom.
Right.
And I was painting it,
once we moved in,
and we came back
that afternoon,
and there was
a footprint of a child,
a little child's footprint in there.
How big is it?
Oh, just like a three
or four-year-old's.
Wow.
Hello? Who's here?
I think it's a girl,
a little girl.
This child feels really sad.
There's a lot
of emotion coming from her.
Now, there's something weird
about that bathroom to my right.
It feels really cold.
There's a coldness
coming from there,
and I just feel this little girl
would walk into this room
and into that bathroom there.
But I do hear
more than one child here.
It was interesting
to learn from Stephen
about some of the former residents
of the building,
so I've decided to do
some further research.
So I've been looking
into the families
that lived at the property,
and these census records
are intriguing, because roughly,
every 10 years,
there are different families
in that house, until we get to 1891.
Now we see a Lucy Evans
living there at that time.
She's a widow and she lives there
with her sister and two children,
Bessie Evans,
who was 11 at the time,
and Arthur, who was nine.
They lived there for t20 years,
so Lucy actually lived in the house
longer than anyone else
in its history.
Hello? I'm calling out
to the little girl.
I can actually hear
'Ring a Ring o' Roses.'
Now, is it this little girl
just having a bit of fun
with a nursery rhyme?
So I'm slightly confused,
because this little girl,
if it is the same girl,
was quite sad
and emotional downstairs,
but then upstairs,
there's a nursery rhyme,
'Ring a Ring o' Roses,'
so is she happy?
I don't understand.
Ah, OK.
It kind of makes sense
that we're in, actually, what looks
like a little girl's bedroom.
I wonder if this little spirit girl
has got a connection,
or she's drawn because
there's another little girl upstairs.
I'm hearing the name Lucy.
We hear footsteps in the night,
which just sounds so real,
and they're just
coming into our bedroom.
That is a little bit more,
a bit frightening,
but it's Jill
who worries about it more,
and, um, you know, she's the one
who can't sleep at night.
She's awake, you know,
three or four hours a night
worrying what's happening.
And, um, my parents are elderly,
if I ever have to go
and see my parents or anything
and I have the night away,
I know Jill
wouldn't stay there on her own.
She'd be scared to stay there.
So we need to fix this, don't we?
Something needs to be sorted,
yes, yeah, definitely.
I think Steve should join us
for spirit triggers this evening,
so we head back to the house
with Jayne and Jill.
Ian?
Guys.
Ian.
Hello, mate. Hi, how are you?
Yeah, good.
Hi. Hello.
Hello, hi, nice to meet you.
Hello. Hi, lovely to meet you.
Hi. Hello. And you, and you.
Well, you've got a haunted house.
I need to say that.
There's a man in this house,
and he worked with his hands.
Wow.
But also there was a child
running around the property,
and I did see a spirit
of a young girl.
OK.
Well, why don't we make a start,
and call out
and see if this male spirit
will communicate with us?
Yeah.
OK, cool.
I'd like to speak to the male spirit
that's here in this building.
Can you please tell us your name?
Do you have a message for us?
I heard something then.
Thank you. End recording.
I heard a voice.
Let's play this back
and see if we've got any responses.
Do you have a message for us?
"Here." It says "here."
Does it?
"Here", or "I'm here"?
It sounds like a child.
It doesn't sound like a man.
Here. Here.
It says "here."
And do you know what?
That sounds quite electronic,
almost ethereal, doesn't it?
It does.
It's weird.
It does.
Wow.
We've had a lot of activity
through our sound machine.
Speakers, yeah.
A speaker, yeah. Um, so we have
It just turns on
at night, doesn't it?
And we just
We have 'Ring a Ring o' Roses' play.
No way!
Yeah.
On my walkaround,
I could hear 'Ring a Ring o' Roses,'
but this girl was singing it,
and she gave me the name of Lucy.
When your smart speaker
plays by itself,
is it always children's music
and nursery rhymes?
It is generally
'Ring a Ring o' Roses,'
and we do have a bit
like folk music, old folk music.
Has anybody ever reported
the street being haunted?
So
The only reason I'm saying that
is that when we were doing the EVP,
I didn't want to interrupt
and I wasn't going to say anything,
but I saw a horse and carriage
just go past really slow.
Wow.
So we
Do you guys know
anything about that?
We were told that a gentleman
called James Harvey lived here,
and he was
a stagecoach maker.
He was a coach maker, wasn't he?
Yeah, yeah.
Well, actually, I've got
Wow, that's interesting.
..all of the names.
So I've got all of the names
from the census record,
so we do know everyone
who lived here.
Now, the first census,
1861, does have a James Harvey.
He was 30 at the time.
He was a coach builder, yeah,
for a horse, a carriage builder.
Wow.
So, let's call out for James Harvey.
OK.
Let's see if the male spirit is him.
I'm calling out to James.
James Harvey, are you the gentleman
I saw on my walkaround?
That's a whispered breath response.
Let's play this back,
see what we got.
Mmm, let's see.
Are you the gentleman
I saw on my walkaround?
Yeah.
I can hear the "sss."
I could hear "yes."
Yes, yes.
I can, I just feel
there's something near the stairs,
halfway up the stairs.
Jill and Steve often hear
heavy footsteps up the stairs,
and feel like someone
enters their bedroom,
so we head up there
with the spirit box to investigate.
Steve, why don't
you call out on this one?
OK.
Ask the spirits to speak to us,
the male spirit or the little girl.
OK, yeah.
What the fuck?
What?
What?
OK, stop.
What?
What's the matter?
Wait, wait. Just wait.
What?
Wait one second.
What's happened?
Is there any crew upstairs?
No-one's on the top floor?
I thought I saw a little head
come round the corner.
Did you?
No!
Yeah, and that freaked me out.
What, a small head, like a child?
A little white girl.
Brilliant.
Well, do you know what?
Given that there
is only one little girl
on any of the census records,
given that her mother was Lucy
and it's a name that you picked up
on straightaway, Ian,
shall we call out for Bessie?
Bessie.
Bessie Evans is the little girl
Wow.
..on the 1891 census.
Recording.
Steve, do you wanna call out?
OK. Bessie, is that you there?
Are you living
in this house alongside us?
Footsteps.
I just heard the floorboard
as soon as you said her name.
I did, yes.
Thank you.
Wow.
I'll play this recording back.
Was that a..?
What was that?
There's a man that speaks.
Did that say "here, buddy?"
That's not you.
No.
That's not me.
Just play it again.
Just before you speak,
someone else says something.
It's a man, isn't it, a man's voice?
Was that a cough?
"Hear me."
"Here, buddy."
Is that not "here, buddy"?
I thought it said "hear me."
"Hear me."
"Here, mate." It's got an accent.
Yeah, it has got an accent.
Just do it one more time, sorry.
Oh my God, it's "Here, mate."
Oh my gosh, that is so clear!
"Here, mate."
"Hear me, hear me."
Wow.
I can sense the girl in the hallway,
and she's curious.
We came into this room
trying to make contact
with a male spirit, right?
What?
"Find me." She likes you.
Is that what she just said?
"Find me." Go to the bottom
of the stairs, Barry.
Talk to her.
Alright, I'll sit here.
If you like me,
Bessie, is that you?
My name's Barri.
She's playing
hide and seek with you,
'cause she went running
over to the door again.
That's where
that painted footprint is.
Can you explain what happened there?
Yes.
Yes, well, we'd only been moved in
probably two or three weeks,
and, um,
I was painting the stepover,
and we went out, came back,
and there was a child's footprint
in there.
And there was no children
in the house, was there?
And it was a small
It was a small child's
footprint, yeah.
Yeah.
I'm wondering about more
than one child,
because if the footprint is tiny,
this wouldn't be Bessie,
because she was 11
in the census.
Oh, OK.
So it could be one
of the other children.
When James Harvey was here,
interestingly, he had three sons,
a three-year-old, a two-year-old
and a two-month-old baby,
in the census.
Right, OK.
OK.
There could be more than one child.
On my walkaround,
I sensed there was more
than one child,
so we move next door
to where the footprint appeared,
to connect using the spirit box.
Bessie, can you hear me?
Do you like playing games?
Rascal?
Are you a little rascal?
Yes.
Yes!
It was a little kid's voice.
Yeah, yeah.
Whoa!
Did you hear that?
Did you feel that?
Yes!
Yes!
There was a bang on the floor.
That was right here.
Can you sing 'Ring a Ring o' Roses'?
Bessie, where are you?
Upstairs?
Upstairs is where I heard
'Ring a Ring o' Roses'
on my walkaround.
Let's play it,
because it could stimulate her
to come forward, and we might well
get a response from her.
OK.
OK, yeah.
# Ring a ring o' roses
# A pocket full of posies
# A-tissue, a-tissue
# We all fall down. #
Stop that. I can't cope with that.
Honestly,
I've gone all, like, yeah.
I'm gonna freak you out.
I can't,
I'm gonna cry in a minute.
There was a group of children
just stood behind Amy.
Oh my goodness.
You're joking.
It's attracted
loads of children in here.
There's two boys
with little flat caps,
and then I could just see
a queue of children.
God.
I couldn't cope with it.
Oh my goodness.
'Ring a Ring o' Roses'
dates back to the Victorian era,
so it's interesting Ian sees
children in Victorian flat caps.
That nursery rhyme was
very, very popular, wasn't it?
And it has been
for many, many years.
So, potentially
it's attracted other spirits here,
but we do need to identify
Who we're dealing with.
Yeah, who we're dealing with.
How many children are here
Oh gosh. Wow.
..and whether or not the male spirit
that you feel and sense
walking up the stairs
is in fact this James, James Harvey.
Could be, yeah.
Got a lot of work to do.
Darkness descends,
and Steve and Jill
leave us for the night.
To capture any unusual activity
during the investigation,
I've placed cameras
across the entire property,
which will be constantly
monitored here in our nerve centre.
Crew's inside, they're setting up
all the cameras now,
and they're turning
them to infrared.
Mm-hmm.
I mean,
I've got all eight cameras in use
because the property is so vast,
but it's also got
so many different areas.
We wanted to cover
the most important parts,
which are definitely the staircase,
where you've
got the heavy footsteps
that have been reported there;
upstairs, where
the child spirit has been heard;
but also I've got two downstairs,
living room and dining room area.
I'd like to head straight back
into the dining room
and start investigating
to try and find out
who this male spirit is.
Well, let's go find out.
Are all the cameras ready
to go to infrared now?
Yeah, copy that.
Alright, let's go in.
Brilliant, let's go.
While Jayne and Ian
set up in the dining room,
I'm positioning a plasma ball
in Jill's daughter's room,
which will hopefully attract
any curious child spirits.
This is going
to react to audio only,
so if there's any noise
in this room
..the fixed rig camera
is gonna pick that up.
Downstairs we're running EchoVox,
which uses banks of phonetic sounds.
Hello? We'd like to speak
to the gentleman.
Are you able to tell us,
are you James Harvey?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thank you, James.
James, can you see Barri,
who's just entered the room?
Yes.
Yes.
James, did Jill and Steve
hear you walking up the stairs?
Yes!
Yes.
Wow!
Again.
Yes.
That is a clear response.
Yeah.
If this is James Harvey,
can you say your name for us?
Oh my God, I think that just said,
"I'd say Jimmy."
We're asking for James,
and I'm sure that just said,
"I'd say Jimmy."
If this is James Harvey, why does
he keep walking up the stairs
into Jill and Steve's bedroom?
As we make our way up there
to investigate
..we hear from the nerve centre.
Nerve centre to Barri.
Receiving, over.
Plasma ball just went off.
Oh my God!
The plasma ball? Where's that?
Guys? The plasma ball,
which is upstairs in the attic.
Let's go.
Right, OK.
Oh my God.
Right.
Oh. And that was going off?
This is voice activated,
but you have to speak quite loud.
Wow.
We need to capitalise
on this activity
and try to connect
to whoever is here.
So the plasma ball
doesn't react to our voices,
I've switched it to touch mode.
So earlier on,
during spirit triggers,
when we played
'Ring a Ring o' Roses,'
you saw multiple children there
at the door.
Yes.
Shall we play
'Ring a Ring o' Roses' again,
and see if that helps?
# Ring a ring o' roses
# A pocket full of posies
# A-tissue, a-tissue,
we all fall #
I'm seeing loads of children again.
How many children do you see?
I just see rows of children.
It's unnerving.
But I feel like these children
are just residual spirits,
an imprint of the past,
and therefore unable to communicate.
Why don't you pop that right
into that, near the bathroom?
What, and just leave it recording?
Leave it recording. Let's play
'Ring a Ring o' Roses' again.
OK.
Jayne?
Yeah, got it.
There's a girl there already, mate.
There's a child here?
I can see her.
I just see an outline of a dress.
Is this Bessie?
# Ring a ring o' roses #
Stand where I am, Jayne,
and look down there.
Oh Jesus.
What?
Yeah.
Static.
Yeah. Who's here?
Static.
Jayne, have you got the tri-field
meter there, on the bed?
Yeah, yeah, it's here.
Could you do something,
let us know you're here?
Spike, 2.8.
Mm-hmm. Can you walk
towards this light here?
Can you see this ball glowing?
Can you touch it, like this?
There was definitely
an electromagnetic spike out there.
Yeah.
Come on, who are you?
Are you Bessie?
Hang on.
Bessie?
Somebody's touching it.
Touch that pink ball.
Point. You're pointing.
I'm pointing.
Point, so she can see me point.
Yeah.
If Bessie has the ability
to interact,
touch and communicate,
she's an intelligent spirit.
What?
What the shit's that coming from?
Where's that coming from?
It's coming out of their speaker.
Oh my God.
Where? Where's it coming..?
That's coming from our speaker.
Are you joking?
This folk music.
It's folk music.
How, though?
That's crazy.
Spirit has manipulated the tablet
in order to play that song.
So, just explain that to me. How..?
I can't explain it.
I've got 'Ring a Ring o' Roses'
downloaded on my tablet,
but I don't have folk music.
Do you know
what freaks me out though?
Yeah, yeah.
Steve said that out the speaker
sometimes comes
Robin Hood type music.
Mmm.
If this is Bessie,
and she's intrigued
by modern technology,
I've got a new piece of kit
she might like to try
in Jill and Steve's bedroom.
So, this Onvoy device
actually has yes/no mode on it.
It's got a dictionary mode on it.
It's also got ability
to produce emoticons,
so emotional symbols to represent
how the spirit may be feeling.
Oh wow, OK.
OK.
Shall we try that?
I'll place it on the floor here.
It's on yes/no mode at the moment.
Is there a child spirit here?
Oh my God, guys.
Mmm?
Something has physically
tapped onto the machine.
Right, OK.
It says it was touched.
It's going mad.
Yes, no, yes. That's going crazy.
It's going mad, yes.
Is this Bessie, James Harvey,
or one of his little boys?
Are you here, James? Jimmy?
Something tapped it, "yes."
Yes.
It's Jimmy, innit?
Thank you, Jimmy.
Shall we move it,
now that we're talking to Jimmy?
Shall we pop it
sort of higher up, maybe?
High somewhere. There we go.
James? Is there any children here?
That said yes.
Yes.
So James can.
Listen, James Harvey's son
was called James Harvey.
We've been calling out
to James Harvey.
It could be the little boy
Yeah.
..that's responding
to us, not the man.
Oh. Oh look.
That says yes.
Yes.
Right.
I tell you what, that could also
be the little, tiny footprint.
We take the kit and move next door
to try and determine
if James Harvey Jr.
was the one who left the footprint.
Do you know what,
I'm just wondering,
maybe they're too young
to be able to read.
There are little symbols
on there, Barri. Maybe pictures.
Maybe they can communicate better
with the little pictures.
Yeah, there's kind of emoticons
that's on there.
Little James, are you happy?
Do you like it here?
Oh dear.
What?
Angry and scared. It was touched.
Oh.
Oh gosh.
Crikey. OK.
Would you like us to help you?
Would that make you happy?
Yes, it will.
Oh.
That was a happy face.
Good.
And it's been touched.
Brilliant.
So we can help you, I promise.
It's just come up with "scared",
and it's been touched.
OK.
Ah.
Please don't be scared.
Everything's going to be OK,
I promise.
That's a sad face.
OK.
I'm calling out
to the little boy that we think
has been really brave this evening
and has been communicating with us.
Is your name James?
Do you have
the same name as your daddy?
Did you leave your footprint?
Did you stand in the wet paint?
Do you want
to tell us anything?
What?
Ooh!
That's here. Hello?
That came from the corridor.
That was a whispered response,
wasn't it?
Yeah. Shall we play that back?
Do you want to tell us anything?
There.
Was that a breath at the end?
Mmm, well, that was out here.
I heard that just here
on the landing.
What do you guys hear?
That does sound like "James."
It does sound like James,
like a little boy going, "James."
Mmm.
That sounds like a young boy to me.
It's a young voice, that.
If little James is here
communicating with us,
there's every chance
that was his footprint.
But why are father and son
still haunting this property?
What?
What?
I could hear footsteps.
Oh my God.
What? What was that?
Keep walking. This is James Harvey.
Come and walk
through your house, sir.
Come up the stairs.
(GASPS)
What?
Is there anyone there?
Oh my God,
there's nobody on the stairs.
There's nobody on the stairs.
James?
Are you coming to see your son?
This is exactly
what they've been experiencing.
Ooh, if I was lying in bed
and I heard that,
I would be terrified.
That's really heavy.
Can you imagine someone
coming up the stairs
and walking
straight into that bedroom?
I don't think James
means them any harm,
but I think he's looking
for something, someone.
Maybe he's looking for his son.
Maybe his little boy, yeah.
Maybe they're not together.
Yeah, yeah.
So why would he be repeating this
walking up the stairs
and going straight
into the master bedroom?
Maybe he's searching.
Maybe he's trapped in a loop.
Maybe he's doing his old route.
Maybe that front bedroom
was the little boy's room.
Maybe he's going in there
looking for his son.
James Harvey Sr. and Jr.
aren't together in the spirit world
and need reuniting.
But why is Bessie still here?
We move downstairs
to make contact one last time.
Shall we use an ITC application,
Spirit Talker?
Yeah.
OK.
Bessie Evans, if you can hear me,
do you like the song 'Ring a Roses'?
I can see her here,
and she's got little pockets
at the front of her dress.
"Take photo."
"Take photo."
Quickly.
Quick, take a picture.
Are you looking for your mummy?
Are you looking for Lucy,
your mummy?
Can you put that cushion
on the floor here?
Which one, this one?
That.
The cushion?
Yeah.
Yeah, why? She wants to sit down?
Yeah.
Ah!
There you go. There you go. Yeah.
She's coming to tell her story.
She says, "I need to sit down."
That's why I want a cushion.
So she's now saying
she misses her family.
Can you tell us something else?
Thank you.
"We have spoke before."
Wow.
Thank you, Bessie.
She makes noises! Oh my God.
Oh my goodness.
Absolutely incredible.
Thank you.
Does she mean through
the speaker, do you think?
Yeah.
Could that be a reference
to the smart speakers
and making noise
on those devices?
It could be.
"Device," yeah, of course.
Isn't it?
Oh.
Bless her.
Ah. Is that because
you're looking for your mummy?
Alright, sweetie, we can help you.
Thank you, Bessie. Ending session.
Our investigation draws to a close,
and we gather in a circle
to reunite Bessie
and her mum Lucy,
and James Harvey Sr. and Jr.
We ask for the spirit beings
we have communicated with
here this evening to step forward
until you see this light.
Lucy, take your little girl,
take Bessie over into eternal warmth
and eternal love together.
James Harvey, you've been
searching for so long for your son.
Can you see him now?
Please move into the light
and take on your journey together
as a family again.
God bless you all. Amen.
The next morning,
after analysing all our evidence,
Jill and Steve return.
Good morning.
Morning.
Morning.
How did you guys sleep?
Not very well.
Really?
Yes. Yeah.
Just worried about what you were
gonna find, and, er, yeah.
So you left us, and we knew
you had a very, very active house.
So we decided to come in here,
and while Barri set up
some more equipment upstairs,
Ian and I ran an application
called EchoVox,
and we made contact again
with James Harvey,
the coach builder.
Oh, right.
James, do Jill and Steve
hear you walking up the stairs?
Yes!
Wow!
Did you hear that twice?
Amazing, isn't it?
Yeah.
Wow.
During the EchoVox session
down here,
I'd gone upstairs briefly
to place some equipment
in the rooms upstairs.
I actually used a plasma ball.
This was set to voice
or sound response only,
and that plasma ball did go off.
We've got a clip to show you.
Oh gosh, yes.
Oh yes, yes. Yeah.
I think that's amazing evidence.
Yeah.
It proves that there is
a consciously aware
intelligent spirit
trying to communicate with us, OK?
I believe it's childlike.
I believe it may well have
been Bessie.
Right, yeah.
OK.
Well, we had the census
records, of course,
so we knew that James Harvey,
the coach builder, had three sons.
One of those sons
was also called James,
and he was three
on the census in 1861.
So we thought,
OK, maybe, is he here?
So whilst we were in
the white bedroom, as we call it,
you know, where the
painted area of the door was
Yeah.
..we heard a response in the ether,
another example
of direct voice phenomena,
and when we reviewed it,
we heard this.
This is as loud as it's gonna go now
without degrading the file.
That's on loop. It is a name.
What do you hear?
James.
Yeah.
Clear, isn't it?
Yeah.
And it sounds like a very young
child as well, doesn't it?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So we went back one final time
onto the third floor,
and we knew from previous
experiences throughout the evening
that playing 'Ring a Roses'
really seemed to bring
the children forward.
So we did that,
but then something weird happened
that took us all by surprise.
Listen to this.
What's that?
It's folk music.
Folk music, like they said.
What the shit's that coming from?
That's coming out of their speaker.
That's what we hear, isn't it?
That's it.
That blew our minds.
Honestly, it shocked us.
Yeah.
OK, does that sound similar
to the stuff you hear?
Yes, yes.
That is
And when we're asleep
and we wake up
at two or three in the morning
hearing that,
you know, you think, "What is it?"
Where has that music come from?
We have never requested that kind
of music, we've never asked for it.
It's like old folk music, isn't it?
Yeah.
Now, guys, it was coming out
of a speaker
that I'd connected to my tablet.
There's no way I have folk music
of that nature preloaded on there.
It's not on my, er, my playlist.
That is just so bizarre.
I can't believe that.
Yeah, mind-blowing.
So we came downstairs
and we sat in your lounge,
and actually, for us,
this session downstairs
put all of the pieces
of the puzzle together.
"Take photo."
"Take photo."
Quickly.
Quick, take a picture.
Spirits were telling us
to take a photo.
Right.
So this is the first photo.
I normally take two or three
in any one place,
so if anything is on them
you can compare.
So, at the time,
I actually was looking here.
Is there anything there?
Nothing there.
But I needed to look in the mirror.
Just tell me if you see
anything at all in there.
(GASPS)
Oh! Oh my gosh!
What can you see?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
A face.
It is like a
Wow. And that
It looks.
it looks like a young
And that is where I was tapped
on the back of the head.
So you got the tap in that location?
Yeah, yeah.
That's Bessie, I think.
She said, "Take photos."
She was behind me.
Oh my goodness.
That's what I wanted
to see to believe.
Yeah, yeah.
Seeing is believing.
Yeah, believing, yeah.
Is it still sceptical
for you, Steve, or..?
It's making you rethink,
isn't it?
Yes. Yeah, definitely, yeah.
I'm gonna play you
the rest of this file.
Ah!
There you go. There you go.
I feel really sad.
Do you? You feel the emotion from..?
I really do.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Sorry. Oh my God.
It's very emotional, isn't it,
to think that she was here
on her own.
Oh gosh, yeah.
Missing the parents.
Yeah, yeah.
Wow.
So, Ian had sensed
that the little girl here was sad,
so the name Lucy coming to Ian,
as soon as he walked in your house,
maybe that was Bessie trying
to give an impression of Mummy,
of who she needs,
who she's here looking for.
Yeah, yeah. Wants her mum.
And the fact
that Bessie is really sad
makes me feel quite emotional,
you know, and I feel like she needs
help to find her mum and dad.
She's the same age as my daughter,
you know,
and I've got that connection
Being a mother, yeah.
That motherly instinct,
and it just makes
you really emotional.
What we had going on
in your house, guys,
was two stories of parents
and children that weren't together,
that needed bringing together
in order to find their peace.
So I opened the doorway
to the light,
and I handed over Bessie
and Lucy to Jayne.
So I asked them both
to hold hands,
and once they were together,
I asked them both
just to follow the beautiful warm,
golden light, which they did,
and they passed through together.
And as I was watching them
go through,
I knew it was now time
for James Sr.
and James Jr.
to also be reunited.
So I thought
this would be down to Barri.
I spoke to them, and I asked James
to find his son,
to meet together,
to take his hand,
to be with his son,
to walk through those pearly gates.
And that's exactly
where I believe they went.
I'm welling up now. Stop it.
So now they're happy.
They've got what they want.
They're together.
Yeah.
Thank you so much.
You're very welcome.
Honestly, it's been
such an experience.
Yeah.
And one we'll never forget.
No, never.
It's been an incredibly
moving investigation.
That was an emotional story,
wasn't it?
Oh, it got to me.
Always, always when it's children.
But who knows
what the next case will bring?

I want you to go.
Help me, help me, please.
Across the UK
Woah.
What the..?
Did you hear that?
Oh my God!
..terrified homeowners
are being plagued by the paranormal.
I can see you.
I am scared to death.
I need to know, am I safe?
Thankfully,
there are three people
What was that?
I've got goosebumps.
No, I'm not going to get out.
Oh my God, Ian, don't leave me.
..who will stop at nothing
Someone's behind me.
Who's here with us?
Ahh!
What the hell was that?
..to return our homes
Can you just take the emotion
away from Jayne, please?
Two spirit forms.
Barri, you're scaring me.
Right next to you.
..back to the land of the living.
This is like
a horror movie, isn't it?
Guys, I feel quite relaxed,
surprisingly, about today.
Do you?
Mmm.
I always worry
about a false sense of security
when we feel OK going to a place,
'cause you never know, do you?
In this investigation
What the shit's that coming from?
Where's that coming from?
It's coming out of their speaker.
Oh my God.
Where?
..a woman terrified
of her own home
A voice shouted back at me, "Stop!"
..tales of mysterious footprints
We came back that afternoon
and there was a little child's
footprint in there.
Wow!
..and menacing footsteps.
Is anyone there?
Oh my God,
there's nobody on the stairs.
Emotions run high for the team
Ah!
There you go.
Oh no!
There you go.
..as they get a picture of the past.
Oh! Oh my God!
When there's loads of history,
Ian, is that harder for you,
or is it easier
to kind of connect with spirit?
I think it's harder, Barri,
because there's going to be
so many things
coming through at once,
and it kind of,
like, overloads my mind.
Although Barri and Jayne
have seen case notes,
medium Ian relies solely
on his psychic abilities.
I am sensing a man.
I do feel that we'll be greeted
with a gentleman there.
I just see him stood
in this massive room.
Our experts have been called in
to investigate
this 15th century property,
which is home
to Jill and partner Steve.
I just want to know who's here
in this property.
They have got to stop scaring me.
It is getting beyond a joke now.
We have lived here
for almost two years now.
After we moved in,
we spoke to our neighbours
who then informed us
that the property was very haunted.
This really scared me.
After a few months of living here,
we started to hear footsteps
at night,
as we were sleeping in bed,
like they're coming up the stairs,
and you almost expected to see
somebody walk into the room.
And Steve would be, "Oh no,
it's an old house, you know,
"you're gonna get
creaks and groans,"
but Steve would go back to sleep
and I'd lie there
all night awake, petrified.
Our smart speaker decided to play
'Ring a Ring o' Roses'
at two o'clock in the morning.
That absolutely
freaked the life out of me.
It was like something
out of a horror film.
The speaker,
over the next few months,
kept playing 'Ring o' Roses'
and another very strange
folky, sort of mystical song,
again, that we'd never asked
the speaker to play, ever.
One night I got up,
stood at the top of the stairs
and said, "Stop," and a voice
shouted back at me, "Stop!"
I was petrified.
Some nights I literally feel
like I'm going mad,
because I can hear whispering.
I literally was sat
in the front room watching TV
the other night
and something touched me
on the back of my head.
Now I'm starting to think,
"Well, this, whatever it is here,
is actually getting physical now,"
and it's got to the point
where I am actually quite fearful.
I really want the team to clarify
that there is something there,
and prove to Steve that
what I'm saying is believable.
Steve says he won't believe
in any paranormal activity
until he actually
sees a spirit in full,
but I feel like we've had
so much evidence,
how can you not believe
that this house isn't haunted?
Right, this is it.
Oh, that's it.
This?
This is the property here.
While Barri and Jayne head off
to research further into the case,
Ian's going to see what
and who he can psychically pick up.
Hello?
It's really, really funny,
because I am drawn to my left,
and I was aware of a gentleman
on my journey here to this house,
now, he's showing me
this big space,
this open space, so I'm wondering
if the middle part of this house
was potentially a hall
or a bigger area than this.
Maldon dates back
to the 10th century,
and I've come to quite
an unusual location
to find out more from former mayor
and author Stephen Nunn.
Stephen, thank you for meeting me.
Why are we meeting in court,
first of all?
Well, we're here because
this is one of the town's
most important historical buildings,
and it was built in 1420
as a private house,
and then in the 16th century,
this became the town hall.
Well, you know the building
that we're interested in, Stephen,
and you know
a little bit about it, don't you?
What can you tell me?
So it's a Grade II listed building.
Originally, it was part
of a much larger building,
a 15th, 16th century hall.
So in the middle was an open hall,
and then you had
two wings either side,
and the property
that you're looking at
was one of those wings,
and the wing was probably
sleeping accommodation.
In the 19th century,
the building was re-fronted
and it was divided
into three properties,
and we know about
some of the families
that were in those three properties
in the 19th century.
We've got a coach builder,
we've got a grocer,
we've got widows,
all sorts of different characters
that make up the story
of the building.
Where's that clock coming from?
That's really, really strange.
There is a clock
in this little hallway,
but it's, I can't hear it now,
but when I was sat down,
it was really clear.
It's almost as if this man I see
Time must have been
important to him.
And I see him
working with his hands.
So was he a woodworker,
or did he build something?
Hello?
Guys, did you hear that?
Did you hear..?
I could hear a child's voice.
Hello?
There were clearly a child's voice,
but it definitely
came from upstairs.
To get a better understanding
of the problem,
I'm meeting Jill's partner Steve,
who also lives in the property.
So, this might be a silly question,
but do you believe
in spirits, ghosts?
I don't really believe
in ghosts myself,
but since we've been there,
there's some
strange things happening.
Can you tell me
what's been going on?
We went out a little while ago
and, um, I took my keys with me,
came home,
put them on the table.
Couldn't find them anywhere.
We looked in the drawers,
jacket pockets, everywhere.
Went out, got another key cut.
Came back home, they were
sitting on the kitchen floor.
And you'd looked there?
Yeah, looked there.
I mean, you couldn't miss them.
It was just
in the centre of the floor.
I personally think it's a child,
because when we first moved in,
on the second floor,
there's a step up
that goes into the bathroom.
Right.
And I was painting it,
once we moved in,
and we came back
that afternoon,
and there was
a footprint of a child,
a little child's footprint in there.
How big is it?
Oh, just like a three
or four-year-old's.
Wow.
Hello? Who's here?
I think it's a girl,
a little girl.
This child feels really sad.
There's a lot
of emotion coming from her.
Now, there's something weird
about that bathroom to my right.
It feels really cold.
There's a coldness
coming from there,
and I just feel this little girl
would walk into this room
and into that bathroom there.
But I do hear
more than one child here.
It was interesting
to learn from Stephen
about some of the former residents
of the building,
so I've decided to do
some further research.
So I've been looking
into the families
that lived at the property,
and these census records
are intriguing, because roughly,
every 10 years,
there are different families
in that house, until we get to 1891.
Now we see a Lucy Evans
living there at that time.
She's a widow and she lives there
with her sister and two children,
Bessie Evans,
who was 11 at the time,
and Arthur, who was nine.
They lived there for t20 years,
so Lucy actually lived in the house
longer than anyone else
in its history.
Hello? I'm calling out
to the little girl.
I can actually hear
'Ring a Ring o' Roses.'
Now, is it this little girl
just having a bit of fun
with a nursery rhyme?
So I'm slightly confused,
because this little girl,
if it is the same girl,
was quite sad
and emotional downstairs,
but then upstairs,
there's a nursery rhyme,
'Ring a Ring o' Roses,'
so is she happy?
I don't understand.
Ah, OK.
It kind of makes sense
that we're in, actually, what looks
like a little girl's bedroom.
I wonder if this little spirit girl
has got a connection,
or she's drawn because
there's another little girl upstairs.
I'm hearing the name Lucy.
We hear footsteps in the night,
which just sounds so real,
and they're just
coming into our bedroom.
That is a little bit more,
a bit frightening,
but it's Jill
who worries about it more,
and, um, you know, she's the one
who can't sleep at night.
She's awake, you know,
three or four hours a night
worrying what's happening.
And, um, my parents are elderly,
if I ever have to go
and see my parents or anything
and I have the night away,
I know Jill
wouldn't stay there on her own.
She'd be scared to stay there.
So we need to fix this, don't we?
Something needs to be sorted,
yes, yeah, definitely.
I think Steve should join us
for spirit triggers this evening,
so we head back to the house
with Jayne and Jill.
Ian?
Guys.
Ian.
Hello, mate. Hi, how are you?
Yeah, good.
Hi. Hello.
Hello, hi, nice to meet you.
Hello. Hi, lovely to meet you.
Hi. Hello. And you, and you.
Well, you've got a haunted house.
I need to say that.
There's a man in this house,
and he worked with his hands.
Wow.
But also there was a child
running around the property,
and I did see a spirit
of a young girl.
OK.
Well, why don't we make a start,
and call out
and see if this male spirit
will communicate with us?
Yeah.
OK, cool.
I'd like to speak to the male spirit
that's here in this building.
Can you please tell us your name?
Do you have a message for us?
I heard something then.
Thank you. End recording.
I heard a voice.
Let's play this back
and see if we've got any responses.
Do you have a message for us?
"Here." It says "here."
Does it?
"Here", or "I'm here"?
It sounds like a child.
It doesn't sound like a man.
Here. Here.
It says "here."
And do you know what?
That sounds quite electronic,
almost ethereal, doesn't it?
It does.
It's weird.
It does.
Wow.
We've had a lot of activity
through our sound machine.
Speakers, yeah.
A speaker, yeah. Um, so we have
It just turns on
at night, doesn't it?
And we just
We have 'Ring a Ring o' Roses' play.
No way!
Yeah.
On my walkaround,
I could hear 'Ring a Ring o' Roses,'
but this girl was singing it,
and she gave me the name of Lucy.
When your smart speaker
plays by itself,
is it always children's music
and nursery rhymes?
It is generally
'Ring a Ring o' Roses,'
and we do have a bit
like folk music, old folk music.
Has anybody ever reported
the street being haunted?
So
The only reason I'm saying that
is that when we were doing the EVP,
I didn't want to interrupt
and I wasn't going to say anything,
but I saw a horse and carriage
just go past really slow.
Wow.
So we
Do you guys know
anything about that?
We were told that a gentleman
called James Harvey lived here,
and he was
a stagecoach maker.
He was a coach maker, wasn't he?
Yeah, yeah.
Well, actually, I've got
Wow, that's interesting.
..all of the names.
So I've got all of the names
from the census record,
so we do know everyone
who lived here.
Now, the first census,
1861, does have a James Harvey.
He was 30 at the time.
He was a coach builder, yeah,
for a horse, a carriage builder.
Wow.
So, let's call out for James Harvey.
OK.
Let's see if the male spirit is him.
I'm calling out to James.
James Harvey, are you the gentleman
I saw on my walkaround?
That's a whispered breath response.
Let's play this back,
see what we got.
Mmm, let's see.
Are you the gentleman
I saw on my walkaround?
Yeah.
I can hear the "sss."
I could hear "yes."
Yes, yes.
I can, I just feel
there's something near the stairs,
halfway up the stairs.
Jill and Steve often hear
heavy footsteps up the stairs,
and feel like someone
enters their bedroom,
so we head up there
with the spirit box to investigate.
Steve, why don't
you call out on this one?
OK.
Ask the spirits to speak to us,
the male spirit or the little girl.
OK, yeah.
What the fuck?
What?
What?
OK, stop.
What?
What's the matter?
Wait, wait. Just wait.
What?
Wait one second.
What's happened?
Is there any crew upstairs?
No-one's on the top floor?
I thought I saw a little head
come round the corner.
Did you?
No!
Yeah, and that freaked me out.
What, a small head, like a child?
A little white girl.
Brilliant.
Well, do you know what?
Given that there
is only one little girl
on any of the census records,
given that her mother was Lucy
and it's a name that you picked up
on straightaway, Ian,
shall we call out for Bessie?
Bessie.
Bessie Evans is the little girl
Wow.
..on the 1891 census.
Recording.
Steve, do you wanna call out?
OK. Bessie, is that you there?
Are you living
in this house alongside us?
Footsteps.
I just heard the floorboard
as soon as you said her name.
I did, yes.
Thank you.
Wow.
I'll play this recording back.
Was that a..?
What was that?
There's a man that speaks.
Did that say "here, buddy?"
That's not you.
No.
That's not me.
Just play it again.
Just before you speak,
someone else says something.
It's a man, isn't it, a man's voice?
Was that a cough?
"Hear me."
"Here, buddy."
Is that not "here, buddy"?
I thought it said "hear me."
"Hear me."
"Here, mate." It's got an accent.
Yeah, it has got an accent.
Just do it one more time, sorry.
Oh my God, it's "Here, mate."
Oh my gosh, that is so clear!
"Here, mate."
"Hear me, hear me."
Wow.
I can sense the girl in the hallway,
and she's curious.
We came into this room
trying to make contact
with a male spirit, right?
What?
"Find me." She likes you.
Is that what she just said?
"Find me." Go to the bottom
of the stairs, Barry.
Talk to her.
Alright, I'll sit here.
If you like me,
Bessie, is that you?
My name's Barri.
She's playing
hide and seek with you,
'cause she went running
over to the door again.
That's where
that painted footprint is.
Can you explain what happened there?
Yes.
Yes, well, we'd only been moved in
probably two or three weeks,
and, um,
I was painting the stepover,
and we went out, came back,
and there was a child's footprint
in there.
And there was no children
in the house, was there?
And it was a small
It was a small child's
footprint, yeah.
Yeah.
I'm wondering about more
than one child,
because if the footprint is tiny,
this wouldn't be Bessie,
because she was 11
in the census.
Oh, OK.
So it could be one
of the other children.
When James Harvey was here,
interestingly, he had three sons,
a three-year-old, a two-year-old
and a two-month-old baby,
in the census.
Right, OK.
OK.
There could be more than one child.
On my walkaround,
I sensed there was more
than one child,
so we move next door
to where the footprint appeared,
to connect using the spirit box.
Bessie, can you hear me?
Do you like playing games?
Rascal?
Are you a little rascal?
Yes.
Yes!
It was a little kid's voice.
Yeah, yeah.
Whoa!
Did you hear that?
Did you feel that?
Yes!
Yes!
There was a bang on the floor.
That was right here.
Can you sing 'Ring a Ring o' Roses'?
Bessie, where are you?
Upstairs?
Upstairs is where I heard
'Ring a Ring o' Roses'
on my walkaround.
Let's play it,
because it could stimulate her
to come forward, and we might well
get a response from her.
OK.
OK, yeah.
# Ring a ring o' roses
# A pocket full of posies
# A-tissue, a-tissue
# We all fall down. #
Stop that. I can't cope with that.
Honestly,
I've gone all, like, yeah.
I'm gonna freak you out.
I can't,
I'm gonna cry in a minute.
There was a group of children
just stood behind Amy.
Oh my goodness.
You're joking.
It's attracted
loads of children in here.
There's two boys
with little flat caps,
and then I could just see
a queue of children.
God.
I couldn't cope with it.
Oh my goodness.
'Ring a Ring o' Roses'
dates back to the Victorian era,
so it's interesting Ian sees
children in Victorian flat caps.
That nursery rhyme was
very, very popular, wasn't it?
And it has been
for many, many years.
So, potentially
it's attracted other spirits here,
but we do need to identify
Who we're dealing with.
Yeah, who we're dealing with.
How many children are here
Oh gosh. Wow.
..and whether or not the male spirit
that you feel and sense
walking up the stairs
is in fact this James, James Harvey.
Could be, yeah.
Got a lot of work to do.
Darkness descends,
and Steve and Jill
leave us for the night.
To capture any unusual activity
during the investigation,
I've placed cameras
across the entire property,
which will be constantly
monitored here in our nerve centre.
Crew's inside, they're setting up
all the cameras now,
and they're turning
them to infrared.
Mm-hmm.
I mean,
I've got all eight cameras in use
because the property is so vast,
but it's also got
so many different areas.
We wanted to cover
the most important parts,
which are definitely the staircase,
where you've
got the heavy footsteps
that have been reported there;
upstairs, where
the child spirit has been heard;
but also I've got two downstairs,
living room and dining room area.
I'd like to head straight back
into the dining room
and start investigating
to try and find out
who this male spirit is.
Well, let's go find out.
Are all the cameras ready
to go to infrared now?
Yeah, copy that.
Alright, let's go in.
Brilliant, let's go.
While Jayne and Ian
set up in the dining room,
I'm positioning a plasma ball
in Jill's daughter's room,
which will hopefully attract
any curious child spirits.
This is going
to react to audio only,
so if there's any noise
in this room
..the fixed rig camera
is gonna pick that up.
Downstairs we're running EchoVox,
which uses banks of phonetic sounds.
Hello? We'd like to speak
to the gentleman.
Are you able to tell us,
are you James Harvey?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thank you, James.
James, can you see Barri,
who's just entered the room?
Yes.
Yes.
James, did Jill and Steve
hear you walking up the stairs?
Yes!
Yes.
Wow!
Again.
Yes.
That is a clear response.
Yeah.
If this is James Harvey,
can you say your name for us?
Oh my God, I think that just said,
"I'd say Jimmy."
We're asking for James,
and I'm sure that just said,
"I'd say Jimmy."
If this is James Harvey, why does
he keep walking up the stairs
into Jill and Steve's bedroom?
As we make our way up there
to investigate
..we hear from the nerve centre.
Nerve centre to Barri.
Receiving, over.
Plasma ball just went off.
Oh my God!
The plasma ball? Where's that?
Guys? The plasma ball,
which is upstairs in the attic.
Let's go.
Right, OK.
Oh my God.
Right.
Oh. And that was going off?
This is voice activated,
but you have to speak quite loud.
Wow.
We need to capitalise
on this activity
and try to connect
to whoever is here.
So the plasma ball
doesn't react to our voices,
I've switched it to touch mode.
So earlier on,
during spirit triggers,
when we played
'Ring a Ring o' Roses,'
you saw multiple children there
at the door.
Yes.
Shall we play
'Ring a Ring o' Roses' again,
and see if that helps?
# Ring a ring o' roses
# A pocket full of posies
# A-tissue, a-tissue,
we all fall #
I'm seeing loads of children again.
How many children do you see?
I just see rows of children.
It's unnerving.
But I feel like these children
are just residual spirits,
an imprint of the past,
and therefore unable to communicate.
Why don't you pop that right
into that, near the bathroom?
What, and just leave it recording?
Leave it recording. Let's play
'Ring a Ring o' Roses' again.
OK.
Jayne?
Yeah, got it.
There's a girl there already, mate.
There's a child here?
I can see her.
I just see an outline of a dress.
Is this Bessie?
# Ring a ring o' roses #
Stand where I am, Jayne,
and look down there.
Oh Jesus.
What?
Yeah.
Static.
Yeah. Who's here?
Static.
Jayne, have you got the tri-field
meter there, on the bed?
Yeah, yeah, it's here.
Could you do something,
let us know you're here?
Spike, 2.8.
Mm-hmm. Can you walk
towards this light here?
Can you see this ball glowing?
Can you touch it, like this?
There was definitely
an electromagnetic spike out there.
Yeah.
Come on, who are you?
Are you Bessie?
Hang on.
Bessie?
Somebody's touching it.
Touch that pink ball.
Point. You're pointing.
I'm pointing.
Point, so she can see me point.
Yeah.
If Bessie has the ability
to interact,
touch and communicate,
she's an intelligent spirit.
What?
What the shit's that coming from?
Where's that coming from?
It's coming out of their speaker.
Oh my God.
Where? Where's it coming..?
That's coming from our speaker.
Are you joking?
This folk music.
It's folk music.
How, though?
That's crazy.
Spirit has manipulated the tablet
in order to play that song.
So, just explain that to me. How..?
I can't explain it.
I've got 'Ring a Ring o' Roses'
downloaded on my tablet,
but I don't have folk music.
Do you know
what freaks me out though?
Yeah, yeah.
Steve said that out the speaker
sometimes comes
Robin Hood type music.
Mmm.
If this is Bessie,
and she's intrigued
by modern technology,
I've got a new piece of kit
she might like to try
in Jill and Steve's bedroom.
So, this Onvoy device
actually has yes/no mode on it.
It's got a dictionary mode on it.
It's also got ability
to produce emoticons,
so emotional symbols to represent
how the spirit may be feeling.
Oh wow, OK.
OK.
Shall we try that?
I'll place it on the floor here.
It's on yes/no mode at the moment.
Is there a child spirit here?
Oh my God, guys.
Mmm?
Something has physically
tapped onto the machine.
Right, OK.
It says it was touched.
It's going mad.
Yes, no, yes. That's going crazy.
It's going mad, yes.
Is this Bessie, James Harvey,
or one of his little boys?
Are you here, James? Jimmy?
Something tapped it, "yes."
Yes.
It's Jimmy, innit?
Thank you, Jimmy.
Shall we move it,
now that we're talking to Jimmy?
Shall we pop it
sort of higher up, maybe?
High somewhere. There we go.
James? Is there any children here?
That said yes.
Yes.
So James can.
Listen, James Harvey's son
was called James Harvey.
We've been calling out
to James Harvey.
It could be the little boy
Yeah.
..that's responding
to us, not the man.
Oh. Oh look.
That says yes.
Yes.
Right.
I tell you what, that could also
be the little, tiny footprint.
We take the kit and move next door
to try and determine
if James Harvey Jr.
was the one who left the footprint.
Do you know what,
I'm just wondering,
maybe they're too young
to be able to read.
There are little symbols
on there, Barri. Maybe pictures.
Maybe they can communicate better
with the little pictures.
Yeah, there's kind of emoticons
that's on there.
Little James, are you happy?
Do you like it here?
Oh dear.
What?
Angry and scared. It was touched.
Oh.
Oh gosh.
Crikey. OK.
Would you like us to help you?
Would that make you happy?
Yes, it will.
Oh.
That was a happy face.
Good.
And it's been touched.
Brilliant.
So we can help you, I promise.
It's just come up with "scared",
and it's been touched.
OK.
Ah.
Please don't be scared.
Everything's going to be OK,
I promise.
That's a sad face.
OK.
I'm calling out
to the little boy that we think
has been really brave this evening
and has been communicating with us.
Is your name James?
Do you have
the same name as your daddy?
Did you leave your footprint?
Did you stand in the wet paint?
Do you want
to tell us anything?
What?
Ooh!
That's here. Hello?
That came from the corridor.
That was a whispered response,
wasn't it?
Yeah. Shall we play that back?
Do you want to tell us anything?
There.
Was that a breath at the end?
Mmm, well, that was out here.
I heard that just here
on the landing.
What do you guys hear?
That does sound like "James."
It does sound like James,
like a little boy going, "James."
Mmm.
That sounds like a young boy to me.
It's a young voice, that.
If little James is here
communicating with us,
there's every chance
that was his footprint.
But why are father and son
still haunting this property?
What?
What?
I could hear footsteps.
Oh my God.
What? What was that?
Keep walking. This is James Harvey.
Come and walk
through your house, sir.
Come up the stairs.
(GASPS)
What?
Is there anyone there?
Oh my God,
there's nobody on the stairs.
There's nobody on the stairs.
James?
Are you coming to see your son?
This is exactly
what they've been experiencing.
Ooh, if I was lying in bed
and I heard that,
I would be terrified.
That's really heavy.
Can you imagine someone
coming up the stairs
and walking
straight into that bedroom?
I don't think James
means them any harm,
but I think he's looking
for something, someone.
Maybe he's looking for his son.
Maybe his little boy, yeah.
Maybe they're not together.
Yeah, yeah.
So why would he be repeating this
walking up the stairs
and going straight
into the master bedroom?
Maybe he's searching.
Maybe he's trapped in a loop.
Maybe he's doing his old route.
Maybe that front bedroom
was the little boy's room.
Maybe he's going in there
looking for his son.
James Harvey Sr. and Jr.
aren't together in the spirit world
and need reuniting.
But why is Bessie still here?
We move downstairs
to make contact one last time.
Shall we use an ITC application,
Spirit Talker?
Yeah.
OK.
Bessie Evans, if you can hear me,
do you like the song 'Ring a Roses'?
I can see her here,
and she's got little pockets
at the front of her dress.
"Take photo."
"Take photo."
Quickly.
Quick, take a picture.
Are you looking for your mummy?
Are you looking for Lucy,
your mummy?
Can you put that cushion
on the floor here?
Which one, this one?
That.
The cushion?
Yeah.
Yeah, why? She wants to sit down?
Yeah.
Ah!
There you go. There you go. Yeah.
She's coming to tell her story.
She says, "I need to sit down."
That's why I want a cushion.
So she's now saying
she misses her family.
Can you tell us something else?
Thank you.
"We have spoke before."
Wow.
Thank you, Bessie.
She makes noises! Oh my God.
Oh my goodness.
Absolutely incredible.
Thank you.
Does she mean through
the speaker, do you think?
Yeah.
Could that be a reference
to the smart speakers
and making noise
on those devices?
It could be.
"Device," yeah, of course.
Isn't it?
Oh.
Bless her.
Ah. Is that because
you're looking for your mummy?
Alright, sweetie, we can help you.
Thank you, Bessie. Ending session.
Our investigation draws to a close,
and we gather in a circle
to reunite Bessie
and her mum Lucy,
and James Harvey Sr. and Jr.
We ask for the spirit beings
we have communicated with
here this evening to step forward
until you see this light.
Lucy, take your little girl,
take Bessie over into eternal warmth
and eternal love together.
James Harvey, you've been
searching for so long for your son.
Can you see him now?
Please move into the light
and take on your journey together
as a family again.
God bless you all. Amen.
The next morning,
after analysing all our evidence,
Jill and Steve return.
Good morning.
Morning.
Morning.
How did you guys sleep?
Not very well.
Really?
Yes. Yeah.
Just worried about what you were
gonna find, and, er, yeah.
So you left us, and we knew
you had a very, very active house.
So we decided to come in here,
and while Barri set up
some more equipment upstairs,
Ian and I ran an application
called EchoVox,
and we made contact again
with James Harvey,
the coach builder.
Oh, right.
James, do Jill and Steve
hear you walking up the stairs?
Yes!
Wow!
Did you hear that twice?
Amazing, isn't it?
Yeah.
Wow.
During the EchoVox session
down here,
I'd gone upstairs briefly
to place some equipment
in the rooms upstairs.
I actually used a plasma ball.
This was set to voice
or sound response only,
and that plasma ball did go off.
We've got a clip to show you.
Oh gosh, yes.
Oh yes, yes. Yeah.
I think that's amazing evidence.
Yeah.
It proves that there is
a consciously aware
intelligent spirit
trying to communicate with us, OK?
I believe it's childlike.
I believe it may well have
been Bessie.
Right, yeah.
OK.
Well, we had the census
records, of course,
so we knew that James Harvey,
the coach builder, had three sons.
One of those sons
was also called James,
and he was three
on the census in 1861.
So we thought,
OK, maybe, is he here?
So whilst we were in
the white bedroom, as we call it,
you know, where the
painted area of the door was
Yeah.
..we heard a response in the ether,
another example
of direct voice phenomena,
and when we reviewed it,
we heard this.
This is as loud as it's gonna go now
without degrading the file.
That's on loop. It is a name.
What do you hear?
James.
Yeah.
Clear, isn't it?
Yeah.
And it sounds like a very young
child as well, doesn't it?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So we went back one final time
onto the third floor,
and we knew from previous
experiences throughout the evening
that playing 'Ring a Roses'
really seemed to bring
the children forward.
So we did that,
but then something weird happened
that took us all by surprise.
Listen to this.
What's that?
It's folk music.
Folk music, like they said.
What the shit's that coming from?
That's coming out of their speaker.
That's what we hear, isn't it?
That's it.
That blew our minds.
Honestly, it shocked us.
Yeah.
OK, does that sound similar
to the stuff you hear?
Yes, yes.
That is
And when we're asleep
and we wake up
at two or three in the morning
hearing that,
you know, you think, "What is it?"
Where has that music come from?
We have never requested that kind
of music, we've never asked for it.
It's like old folk music, isn't it?
Yeah.
Now, guys, it was coming out
of a speaker
that I'd connected to my tablet.
There's no way I have folk music
of that nature preloaded on there.
It's not on my, er, my playlist.
That is just so bizarre.
I can't believe that.
Yeah, mind-blowing.
So we came downstairs
and we sat in your lounge,
and actually, for us,
this session downstairs
put all of the pieces
of the puzzle together.
"Take photo."
"Take photo."
Quickly.
Quick, take a picture.
Spirits were telling us
to take a photo.
Right.
So this is the first photo.
I normally take two or three
in any one place,
so if anything is on them
you can compare.
So, at the time,
I actually was looking here.
Is there anything there?
Nothing there.
But I needed to look in the mirror.
Just tell me if you see
anything at all in there.
(GASPS)
Oh! Oh my gosh!
What can you see?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
A face.
It is like a
Wow. And that
It looks.
it looks like a young
And that is where I was tapped
on the back of the head.
So you got the tap in that location?
Yeah, yeah.
That's Bessie, I think.
She said, "Take photos."
She was behind me.
Oh my goodness.
That's what I wanted
to see to believe.
Yeah, yeah.
Seeing is believing.
Yeah, believing, yeah.
Is it still sceptical
for you, Steve, or..?
It's making you rethink,
isn't it?
Yes. Yeah, definitely, yeah.
I'm gonna play you
the rest of this file.
Ah!
There you go. There you go.
I feel really sad.
Do you? You feel the emotion from..?
I really do.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Sorry. Oh my God.
It's very emotional, isn't it,
to think that she was here
on her own.
Oh gosh, yeah.
Missing the parents.
Yeah, yeah.
Wow.
So, Ian had sensed
that the little girl here was sad,
so the name Lucy coming to Ian,
as soon as he walked in your house,
maybe that was Bessie trying
to give an impression of Mummy,
of who she needs,
who she's here looking for.
Yeah, yeah. Wants her mum.
And the fact
that Bessie is really sad
makes me feel quite emotional,
you know, and I feel like she needs
help to find her mum and dad.
She's the same age as my daughter,
you know,
and I've got that connection
Being a mother, yeah.
That motherly instinct,
and it just makes
you really emotional.
What we had going on
in your house, guys,
was two stories of parents
and children that weren't together,
that needed bringing together
in order to find their peace.
So I opened the doorway
to the light,
and I handed over Bessie
and Lucy to Jayne.
So I asked them both
to hold hands,
and once they were together,
I asked them both
just to follow the beautiful warm,
golden light, which they did,
and they passed through together.
And as I was watching them
go through,
I knew it was now time
for James Sr.
and James Jr.
to also be reunited.
So I thought
this would be down to Barri.
I spoke to them, and I asked James
to find his son,
to meet together,
to take his hand,
to be with his son,
to walk through those pearly gates.
And that's exactly
where I believe they went.
I'm welling up now. Stop it.
So now they're happy.
They've got what they want.
They're together.
Yeah.
Thank you so much.
You're very welcome.
Honestly, it's been
such an experience.
Yeah.
And one we'll never forget.
No, never.
It's been an incredibly
moving investigation.
That was an emotional story,
wasn't it?
Oh, it got to me.
Always, always when it's children.
But who knows
what the next case will bring?
